SLA contributes to storm water project Volunteer hours count toward town’s match

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE Ñ The Schroon Lake Association volunteers will play a major role in a storm water run off project to be completed this fall.

The $230,000 state grant that will fund the project requires a match from the local community. To help the town of Schroon reach that match, SLA volunteers

have completed 1,100 hours of work. Ò Our board members held educational programs, trained and supervised lake stewards, scouted for milfoil and did scores of other things over the past nine months,Ó said Paul Conolly of the SLA steering committee. Ò These hours, which will be valued at $25 an hour, act as matching monies to be used to keep storm water from polluting our lake.Ó The Warren County Soil & Water Conservation District will lead the project. The town of Schroon will provide in-kind services such as manpower, equipment and supplies to help meet its required match, Supervisor Mike Marnell said.

Scout project helps beautify downtown Ti.

By Fred Herbst TICONDEROGA Ñ Trail Mix is growing in popularity among Ticonderoga area hikers.

No, not the snack mixture of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and chocolate. Trail Mix is a group of local people who join to make regular treks into the Adirondacks. Ò Trail Mix has evolved to be a group of people who enjoy the solitude of weekly hikes on trails that are less traveled by,Ó Marsha Jewett-LaPointe said. Ò Just as the name implies, a variety of hikes are offered to accommodate the interests and abilities of the participants.Ó Trail Mix began in 2012 when JewettLaPointe lost her regular hiking partner to injury. She placed an announcement in the Times of Ti seeking people interested in joining her on excursions.

She was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of fellow hikers. Ò All hikers who have ever hiked alone have stories to tell of bad falls, being surrounded by coyotes, running out of water, falling through the ice or getting lost,Ó Jewett-LaPointe said. Ò So itÕ s not really a great idea. Ò But just as important as safety in numbers is the camaraderie that develops on the trail,Ó she said. Ò Strong friendships have grown between people who were once strangers. There is something about huffing and puffing,

Praise Band joins church musicians First United Methodist Church in Ti has several groups

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ Joyful music can be heard echoing in the halls at the First United Methodist Church in Ticonderoga.

ThatÕ s because the newly-formed Praise Band has joined the churchÕ s youth an adult hand bell choirs and youth and adult choruses to provide a variety of music for services and events. Ò We are always looking for new people to join in, to Ô make a joyful noise unto the LordÕ ,Ó Betty Rettig of the church said.

The Praise Band features performers of all ages, Ò Whether experienced or not, people are welcome and encouraged to join,Ó Rettig said. Ò The church has purchased a variety of instruments that are easy to learn, but those who have their own instruments are also being sought. Musicians do not have to belong to the church to participate. Drums, an electric violin, acoustical guitar, a base and keyboard are some of the instruments that are available. Ò Singers are also welcome to come join the excitement in praising God,Ó she said.

The First United Methodist Church youth groups meet most Sundays. Students in grades 3-5 meet 4 to 5 p.m. and grades 6-12 6-7 p.m. Pizza is provided at 5 p.m. with the Praise Band

rehearsing until 6 p.m. Ò All students in grades 3-12 are welcome to join the youth groups and be part of the Praise Band,Ó Rettig said. Ò Pastor Scott Tyler leads the youth groups and Praise Band with the assistance of parents and volunteers.Ó The church youth chorus and youth hand bell choir are also seeking new members.

Grace Trombley, church organist and choir director, meets with the youth choir on Sunday 11:45 to 12:15. The youth bell

choir meets Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Both meet in the choir room at the church.

The adult bell choir meets on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and the adult choir meets on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

Special music is now being prepared now for Easter Sunday, April 20.

Ticonderoga StreetFest to return in 2014 Sixth annual event slated July 26

The 2014 edition will be held Saturday, July 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Montcalm Street, which will be closed to traffic to create a pedestrian mall. Ò We invite the community, area visitors, businesses and vendors to join us for the sixth annual StreetFest in downtown Ticonderoga,Ó Darlene Treadway, StreetFest committee chairwoman, said. Ò The committee is already working hard to coordinate the event, add new aspects and book a variety of live music and entertainment, as we continue to grow this wonderful event in Ticonderoga.Ó StreetFest will include local businesses offering promotions, specials and sidewalk sales as well as an array of food options, street vendors, arts and crafts, live music, childrenÕ s activities, face painting, full face art, caricatures, displays and more.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

The StreetFest committee is in the process of registering vendors for the 2014 street celebration. People interested in being a vendor can contact the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce at 94 Montcalm St. or Email chamberinfo@ticonderogany.com.

Ti farmers market preparing for summer Vendor being sought for 2014 season

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ ItÕ s not exactly growing season, but the Ticonderoga Area Farmers Market is seeking vendors for this summer.

The market, sponsored by Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce and Inter-Lakes Health, will be open Saturdays July 5 through Oct. 11 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Route 9N, near the Liberty Monument. The market will move to downtown Ticonderoga July 26 for the sixth annual StreetFest.

The market is a New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Farmers Market Nutrition Program approved market that will accept checks and coupons. Ò The Ticonderoga Area Farmers Market is recruiting vendors for the 2014 market,Ó June Curtis, market manager, said. Ò If you produce a quality food product that is locally grown, farm raised or handmade featuring local materials, you may be interested in participating in the farmers market.Ó Curtis, an AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks member working with the chamber, will lead the efforts to manage and develop the market. Her responsibilities include recruiting local growers and vendors, managing the weekly operations, assisting vendors in market policy compliance, maintaining records and promoting the market in the community. Ò My immediate focus is to invite local growers to join the market,Ó Curtis said. Ò Just as broccoli and radish seeds sprout out of the garden, IÕ m trusting new farmers and vendors to sprout out of the landscape, germinating increased activity at the market.Ó Farmers are required to grow half of the fruits and vegetables

they offer. All products must be local, from within a 100 mile radius. Ò The market welcomes vendors who offer original goods that complement farmersÕ products,Ó Curtis said. Ò Volunteers are

Teacher scholarships available War College May 16-18 TICONDEROGA Ñ Fort Ticonderoga will award four middle or high school teachers the opportunity to attend the 19th annual War College of the Seven Years War May 16-18 on scholarships.

The annual seminar focuses on the French & Indian War in North America (1754-1763), bringing together a panel of historians from around the country and beyond. The War College takes place in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center and is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. The scholarships are available for educators who are first-time attendees at the War College.

Since 2001, Fort Ticonderoga has provided scholarships for 60 teachers from across the country to attend the War College, and a total of 112 teacher scholarships to attend seminars and confer-

ences at the fort.

Teachers interested in applying for a scholarship to attend this yearÕ s War College of the Seven Years War should download an application at www.fort-ticonderoga.org. Applications are due

by March 15.

Successful applicants will receive free registration, two box lunches and an opportunity to dine with the War College speakers at a private dinner the Saturday of the War College. Contact Rich Strum, director of education, at 585-6370 for more information.

Non-teachers can register to attend the War College as well.

Alumna Paige Hughes came to St. Mary’s School in Ticonderoga to share her mission trip to Haiti with the students. Fifth graders Avery Kidder and Michael O’Donnell had a chance to view her computer presentation. Hughes attends Manhattan College and went to Haiti in January.

Scout project beautifies downtown Ti

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ Downtown Ticonderoga will be adorned with flowers this spring, if spring ever arrives.

Sean Lawrie, a Ticonderoga Boy Scout, has constructed and installed wooden flower boxes outside the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce office on Montcalm Street as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Eagle Scout, scoutingÕ s ultimate rank, requires scouts to complete a community service project prior to receiving the award. Ò This has truly been a community effort,Ó Matthew Courtright, chamber executive director, said. Ò We are thrilled to have worked with Sean on this project. The flower boxes are a great addition to the chamber office and will enhance our appearance as the visitor and business center for the Ticonderoga area.Ó With direction from mentor Michael Moser, Lawrie met with local businesses seeking donations and held a bottle drive to pay for other materials. ProBuild in Ticonderoga donated the majority of the wood and stain for the project.

Aubuchon Hardware of Ticonderoga donated brackets and screws. Ò Eagle Scout projects are a great way to get connected within your community and assist a local non-profit,” Lawrie said. “It was a pleasure working and coordinating with the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, the ProBuild team and Aubuchon of Ticonderoga.

I would also like to thank Michael Moser and all who assisted in installing the flower boxes.”

Courtright said the project was a joint effort. Ò I appreciate the continued support from our dedicated chamber members,Ó he said. Ò ProBuild and Aubuchon Hardware stepped up and assisted with this project. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to both of these dedicated chamber members and local businesses. Ò Eagle Scout projects are a wonderful way for our youth to serve the local community and create sustainable projects within the Ticonderoga area.Ó The Eagle Scout service project requires scouts to demonstrate leadership while performing a project for the benefit of the community. A written plan must be submitted and be pre-approved by the benefiting organization, the local scout leader, the unit committee and a district representative.

Courtright would like to see future Eagle Scout projects completed in Ticonderoga. Ò The Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, town of Ticonderoga, and the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership are currently coordinating with Michael Moser on future Eagle Scout projects that will be a benefit to the community as whole,Ó he said.

T.R. and the hyphenated American

D

uring the final three years of his life, former U.S. President Theodore Ò TeddyÓ Roosevelt (R) gave considerable thought to the waves of European immigrants which were sweeping the nation; they had started in the mid19th century and continued through the opening decades of the 1900s.

In most respects, these newcomers were T.R.Õ s idea of model immigrants of the era; that is, they quickly learned English and assimilated themselves unabashedly into the now sadly passŽ Ò melting pot.Ó They were eager to jump into the mainstream of American life and leave their impoverished past behind.

These mostly Roman Catholic Europeans-turnedAmericans were not highly schooled, but they were far from being the Ò low informationÓ voters we hear so much about today.

In an era before television and Internet, they gobbled up the news by reading newspapers and listening to the radio. They knew their stuff; they could tell you exactly where Montana was located on a USA map (never having visited the place), yet they endured the occasional insult from ignorant Protestant employers as well as passers by. No matter, they were a tough breed of late pioneers; they were happy to escape old Europe.

Roosevelt penned his thoughts about U.S. immigrantsÑ and what it means to be an AmericanÑ in two famous texts, dated 1915 and 1919. His statements are often quoted (and misquoted) by folks on both side of todayÕ s immigration amnesty debate.

This newspaper first published Roosevelt’s words over a decade ago. In the intervening years, reader Shirley Whittman of Shoreham, Vt. kept the yellowed newspaper clipping of T.R.Õ s words and found some solace in reading it.

Last week, Mrs. Whittman called Denton Publications and wondered if it was time, again, to reprint the former PresidentÕ s words.

Of course weÕ re always happy to respond to reader requests, so we have gone back and researched both RooseveltÕ s 1915 letter to the Knights of Columbus of New York City and his 1919 letter to the American Defense Society. Both texts exhibit RooseveltÕ s feeling on an emotional yet equally political and philosophical subject.

When you read T.R.Õ s words today, you realize that his argument about what it means to be a real American is on-going, evolving. In a modern world where many intellectuals would like to think nationalism is a thing of the past, stirrings of flag and country are actually being reinvigorated around the globe (witness China and Russia of late).

He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American.Ó 1919Ñ Ò ...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.Ó Roosevelt penned his final words on immigration on Jan. 3, 1919, three days before he died. Nearly a century later, many Americans and would-be Americans are divided, even brazenly resistant, to the idea of RooseveltÕ s concept of Americanism.

To the Times of Ti: Just writing you about my experiences with one of your staff writers.

Since he became involved in covering the North Country Honor Flight your writer Shawn Ryan has done a truly remarkable job. I have an incredibly full schedule and logistic issues that rival D-Day, so I do not go out of my way to write nice letters complimenting others for doing their job. What Shawn has done for us has prompted me to make this exeption. I find Shawn to be one of the most sensitive and caring journalists I have ever encountered. His desire to report not only the facts of every detail of the Honor Flight story, but also the emotion behind every person involved, is phenomenal.

When it comes to telling the stories of our heroes Shawn has shown to be a good listener and able to feel the compassion and respect it takes for these remarkable men and women to open up. In interviewing United States Marine Corps WW-II veteran Merwin Cowles about his combat in the bloody battle of Okinawa, Merwin broke down trying to describe the horror of what he faced. Out of troops and facing their last stand of the war in 1945, the Japanese reverted to using local children 8 or 9 or 10 years old as prisoners, attached bayonettes to bamboo sticks and sent them out of the caves at Nahau to go stab and kill the wounded Marines on the beachheads. Merwin was a crew chief on a team of three Amtraks, each equipped with the firepower of two 30-caliber machine guns on the front and one 50-cal on the back. Seeing their fellow Marines being murdered by children MerwinÕ s Lieutenant in command ordered him to open up. I am the first person in 68 years he ever told that story to, until he met Shawn.

He still has nightmares about the slugs of the big 50-cal guns literally cutting these children in half. For him to have shared these agonizing memories with your writer implies a great feeling of trust he had with Shawn. And for the public to finally realize these warriors have carried these horrible memories with them for 70 years is part of our duty as a nation to finally recognize how much we owe them I know that your editorial policy in allowing your publications to run so many consecutive stories about the Honor Flight is also without precedent. I can only thank you and assure you that the public wants to know every detail of the Honor Flight, every heroÕ s story, every parade, Flag ceremony, and mostly about every flight. The Honor Flight may well be the finest organization in America in regard to what we do and how well we do it, and I am only slightly biased in that regard.

He asserts that the media should Ò not allow the science of climate change to be compromised by opinion pieces of misinformed, scientifically illiterate writers.Ó I would like to remind Mr. Danna that we do not live in a third-world country run by a dictator who controls the media Ñ this is America. We can debate the so called Ò scienceÓ of climate change freely. His assertions are far more dangerous than climate change will ever be to our planet.

Seeking historical information To the Times of Ti: In 1917 the 80-acre Ross Lake, appeared for the first time. It was near Sodom, N.Y. in the Town of Johnsburg. Ellsworth Ross, with financial help from his brother, Hosea, built the large dam with laid up stone slabs and cobble fill in 1916. The Ross brothers were establishing a “resort” for fishing and hunting. A news article at the time called it the Ò New Adirondack Gem.Ó The Ross Family originally settled in that place a few years after the Revolutionary War. Some of the other male names in the family were: Samuel Ross, Hiram, Willard, Taylor, and William. I am gathering information and pictures about the Ross Farm, the project of building the dam and artificial lake and what happened after the lake was created, including some of the tragedies within the members of the Ross Family. Al GoreÕ s ClimateReality presentations claim man-made CO2 is causing catastrophic warming, but incredibly thereÕ s no mention that water vapor is the main greenhouse gas Ñ 95 percent of the total, compared with CO2Õ s portion of less than 5 percent, with man-made CO2 only 0.28 percent. CO2Õ s negligible effect on climate cannot even be measured. GoreÕ s programs assert CO2Õ s effect by innuendo and scare-mongering, not by evidence.

Programs note the warmest years on record have occurred since 2000, but donÕ t mention that 120 years before man-made CO2 began increasing in 1940, climate began naturally emerging at 0.9¼ F per century from a 500-year Ò Little Ice Age,Ó so of course recent years are the warmest.

The rate of warming has been unaffected by sextupling of hydrocarbon use since 1940.

Climate fluctuations correlate with sunspots, not with CO2.

The current 17-year cooling correlates with lower solar activity, despite rising CO2 levels. WeÕ re still 2 degrees Fahrenheit below the 3,000-year average; Medieval, Roman, and Minoan climates were pleasantly warmer.

GoreÕ s program says 800,000-year ice cores reveal CO2 and temperatures Ò follow each other.Ó Not exactly. Ice core isotopes prove that temperature increases first - CO2 increase follows (warmer oceans release CO2 - the Ò champagne effectÓ ).

Current law requires most towns to petition the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) to change speed limits, an arduous process that some officials say isn’t always responsive to the needs of the community.

Tonya Lana Hurlburt, 51, of Ticonderoga, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the MosesLudington Hospital of Ticonderoga.

Born in Ticonderoga, June 1, 1962, she is the daughter of Kenneth M. and Sally (Huestis) Curtis of Ticonderoga.

Tonya was a loving wife, an adoring and devoted mother and an amazingly special grandmother. She lived her life for her family. Her children and her grandchildren were everything to her.

Tonya was always smiling.

She had a heart so big and spirit so bright that it made you happy to just be around her, so bright, so loving that it glittered like diamonds in her eyes and shown like the sun in her smile. Tonya was a very talented lady, giving of herself 100% to anyone and everything she did. No half-measures with her. A lover of life she was. She has been so strong, so much a hero to all those lives that she has touched, always coming to the aid of those who needed anything.

Even though Tonya suffered these past 6, almost 7 years, she still cared about everyone else more than herself.

She was so strong and courageous, always enjoying and believing in spreading God's word, always smiling through the pain. "Cus it could be worse it could be one of you suffering." she would say to us.

Tonya was a loving wife of 35 years, a mother most of her life and no one could ever love her family the way she did. She fought so hard to not let her family know how much pain she was in, always willing to help solve anything she could for anyone she could. Giving so much of herself all the time.

"Her family was her greatest accomplishment." she said and she knew that God had a plan and everything happens for a reason. That's how lucky she was to have had so much love and laughter in her life, so many happy memories, and to have the love of her husband, kids and grand-kids, was the most important element in her life. Always hug and never stay angry. She was one smart lady. She believed in her whole heart that family is so important and that you keep them close together

by faith and love.

Now that she has been called home, she holds the hand of Jesus, he has erased her pain. May her love and smile be remembered by the warmth of the sun that shines down upon all of us, may her voice be heard through the song of the birds that swoop through the sky, may her touch be felt through the breeze that brushes our face.

Her brilliant light may have been extinguished here on this earth, but it will forever shine brightest in Heaven, and through her children and grandchildren.

"Nothing was more important than family." is what she would tell us everyday.

Tonya was a woman who laughed, who cried, who loved. She lived life to her fullest extent smiling all the way.

Traffic surveys conducted by the Sheriff’s Department monitoring average speed through that area will factor into the final decision, said Scozzafava.

Ticonderoga town supervisor Bill Grinnell called the legislation a Ò no brainerÓ and a step in the right direction. Ò Who better knows what the rate of speed should be that local residents,Ó he said. Ò This probably should have been done years ago.Ó Crown Point boss Charles Harrington said lower speed limits tend to benefit residents in the long run, citing recent efforts to lower the limit through the center of town from 40 and 35 to 30 and the stretch of Main Street in front of the school to 20. Ò ThatÕ s taken a lot to get used to, but weÕ re all better off,Ó he said. Ò Trying to navigate that corner in the center of town, heading south, at 40 mph, was very difficult. You’d really have to be at your best to accomplish that. WeÕ ve come a long way.Ó And in Johnsburg, a town that has been battling the DOT for years, supervisor Ron Vanselow said heÕ s glad to have the ball back in his court Ñ especially when it comes to the warren of dirt roads that the state has historically claimed residents should self-regulate. Ò We regularly receive complaints,Ó said Vanselow. Ò WeÕ re happy to run with this.Ó Despite the ostensible benefits, some feel as if taking the decision out of that hands of an impartial agency opens the process up to meddling by elected officials. Ò The present form adequately takes the political aspect out of it,Ó said Curt Gregory, general foreman for the Essex County Highway Department.

“This could certainly be an issue in towns where officeholders donÕ t have the ability to make the right non-political decisions,Ó countered Grinnell. Ò It shouldnÕ t be an issue in Ticonderoga Ñ weÕ ve got a board who can separate politics from the practical.Ó Assemblywoman Addie Russell is co-sponsoring a companion bill in her chamber. If passed, it will be kicked up to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and would take effect 180 days after becoming law.

Local municipalities may soon be able to set speed limits on town roads.

The open houses will be held on the first Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to p.m. The TACC office is located at 94 Montcalm St., Suite 1 in Ticonderoga.

North Hudson man wins auctioneer award John Gokey receives honor after 27 years

seth@denpubs.com NORTH HUDSON Ñ John Gokey, owner of GokeyÕ s Auction and Appraisal Service in North Hudson, was recently named Auctioneer of the Year by the Duane E. Gansz Memorial New York State Auctioneers Association, Inc. Gokey received the award at the annual NYSAA convention in Cortland.

The award is given every year to the most enthusiastic professional dedicated to the auction method of marketing. This year, Gokey was selected from 250 auctioneers.

John and his wife, Gene, have been operating GokeyÕ s Auction and Appraisal in North Hudson over 27 years. They are both members of the National Auctioneers Association.

They specialize in estate sales and offer a monthly estate auction from April through November each year.

Gokey was first interested in the auction business as a child when his father hauled him around to various auctions. He went on to attend auctioneer school at Florida Auctioneer Academy and has since taken a variety of certified courses that specialize in auctioneer practice.

Both the Gokeys have successfully completed required courses and are certified appraisers and members of the Certified Appraisal Guild of America and are also Certified Estate Specialist. Both courses are in conjunction with the National Auctioneers Association Education Institute.

After spending time as a consignor, setting up auctions for various auctioneers throughout the state, he decided to open his own practice in North Creek. Ò People often ask me why I operate at my

location,Ó he said. Ò When auctioneers attend, they know why.Ó Ò WeÕ re in a centralized location just off the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87), drawing people from Vermont, Plattsburgh and Glens Falls areas, all from equal distances away.Ó When asked what has been most important about succeeding for 27 years, he said theyÕ ve very selective with what they handle.

“Nineteen-fifties-era stuff is really popular right now, in the past weÕ ve had a lot of success with rustic furniture,Ó he said.

Gokey was also recognized this year by the New York State Auctioneers Association for his outstanding contributions of service over the years. HeÕ s currently the NYSAA chairman of the board, where he was president from 20122013, vice president from 2010-2012, secretary from 2009-2010 and director from 2007-2008.

The couple has four children who have all helped out with the business over the years, and continue to do so today.

Ò This is another example of local citizens working with their town government to make our wonderful lake better and safer,Ó said Roger Friedman, a town trustee and SLA member.

Chuck Harste, SLA vice president, said some of those volunteer hours were spent in monitoring lake water quality as SLA members went out and sampled Schroon Lake water for testing under the Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program. CSLAP is a volunteer lake monitoring and education program that is managed by state Department of Environmental Conservation and New York State Federation of Lake Associations.

Schroon Lake Manager Steve LaMere is preparing a report on the lake during the past decade using testing performed on samples collected by volunteers. ”Everyone chipped in, whether it was fund raising for the craft fair, the Hornbeck boat raffle or attending project planning meetings,Ó Helen Wildman, SLA past president, said.

Marnell expects storm water project construction to begin in the fall with town crews performing much of the work Ò WeÕ ll start the day after Labor Day,Ó Marnell said. Ò ItÕ s something that needs to be done.Ó Granger said storm water run off from the hamlet now goes directly into the lake, carrying pollutants. Ò Did you know that all the storm drains on Main Street from the Strand to the bridge and down Dock Street all run right into Schroon Lake?,Ó Granger said. Ò All that goes into the lake, including salt used on the streets. Storm water runoff is a huge problem in Schroon.Ó Since Schroon Lake is bordered by two counties Ñ Essex and Warren Ñ as well as three towns Ñ Schroon, Horicon and Chester Ñ the project involves a number of agencies. A steering committee with representatives of various groups are working on the project. Ò We are working along with ESSLA (East Shore Schroon Lake Association), town and county officials to kick start this project now that the money has been released by the Secretary of State,” Granger said. Ò Paul Conolly and Eric Cordis are our (SLA) representatives on the steering committee and Roger Friedman and Don Sage are the (Schroon) town representatives.Ó Schroon Lake is a 4,126 acre lake and its watershed area is part of the Hudson River drainage system.

Performance Arts Connection provided another night of Moriah mayhem recently as it presented a pro-wrestling style benefit program at the Mineville VFW. The show raised $793 for High Peaks Hospice and $457 for the Mineville VFW, according to Justin Gaddor of PAC. Ò It was a very successful show,Ó Gaddor said.

Performance Arts Connection is patterned after televisionÕ s pro wrestling. Ò WeÕ ve been doing it for the last 10 years,Ó explained Mike Gaddor. Ò We were all in drama club in

high school and love acting Ñ and we love pro wrestling. ItÕ s just a lot of fun.Ó While the group has been Ò wrestlingÓ for a decade, it made its public debut in October 2010 at a cystic fibrosis benefit held at the Grover Hills Deli. A ring was set up in the parking lot and more than 100 people turned out for the free show. More than $700 was donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Since that time PAC has held benefit shows in Crown Point, North Hudson and other communities.

The Mineville VFW show featured PAC performers as Supernova, Jacked Vegas, Berracuda, Crusher Bigelow, Scrap Iron, Casanova, Venum, The Dragon, Bonecollector, The Young Guns, Skeletron, The Tiger, Natron and others.

St. Patrick’s Day benefit aids monument project Raffle, games, food raise $765

fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY Ñ A St. PatrickÕ s Day event moved the Lake Champlain Memorial Garden & Angel of Hope Monument a bit closer to reality.

The Port Henry Office of Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company raised more than $700 for the project during a Community Appreciation Day. The event included a raffle, which generated $765 for the construction of the memorial garden and Angel of Hope monument. Raffle prizes were donated by the Town of Moriah Country Club, Port Henry Service Center, DeckerÕ s Flats Floral Shop & Greenhouse, GeorgeÕ s Restaurant, Kings Corner, BoyeaÕ s Grocery and Deli, and TransFirst.

The Community Appreciation Day also featured homemade soup and other refreshments, as well as giveaways, games and prizes.

Luci and Tom Carpenter of Moriah, whose son Brian died in a car accident in 2005, are leading the effort to create a Lake Champlain Memorial Garden & Angel of Hope Monument. It will be located at the Moriah town hall, Park Place, Port Henry. Ò For the past three years, we have been searching for just the right spot to dedicate to the Memorial Garden and Angel of Hope Monument,Ó Luci Carpenter said. Ò Through the generous donations of family, friends and community to the Brian T. Carpenter Memorial Fund, Tom Scozzafava and the Moriah town board, this project has now becoming a reality.Ó The Angel of Hope Monument is a replica of the

Ò It will be created and funded through donations and fund raising efforts of the Angel of Hope/Memorial Garden committee. The sale of memorial bricks pavers, benches, memorial trees, shrubs and perennial gardens to be placed in and around the memorial garden and the angel statue, will fund the development of the project, as well as, the maintenance of the Memorial Garden & Angel of Hope Monument in future years. The pavers, benches, trees and perennial gardens are loving tributes from parents, grandparents, friends, family and other loved ones to the memory of a child and become a permanent part of the memorial garden.Ó There are about 122 angels placed throughout the world, Carpenter said, including eight in New York state. In the North Country, Angel of Hope Monuments are located in Chazy, Saranac Lake, Willsboro and Plattsburgh at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital.

Honey arrived at the shelter with her brother Angel, both terribly under-socialized Honey and afraid of everything. A guide’s life— long days, short pay T

he annual sugaring season has finally arrived, and soon, frost heave season will be upon us.

These are just a few of the annual novelties of the North Country experience which are typically followed in short order by the Mud Season, Spring Flood Season, Spring Break, Black Fly Season, Birding Season, Ice Out, Trout Season, Pothole Season, and eventually the Summer Season, which always seem to be the shortest of all Adirondack seasonal anomalies.

In typical, contrary Adirondack style, the annual Trout Season begins on April 1, while most streams and rivers are either socked in with ice and snow, or running at flood state following an early thaw.

Fittingly, April Fools is a term the locals use to describe the usual over-eager and uninitiated anglers who travel to the region from downstate locales with hopes of catching an Adirondack trout on opening day.

Generally, a majority of local lakes and ponds retain their winterÕ s ice cover until the beginning of May, and most streams remain too high and to gold to bother with until about the same time.

Many of the avid Adirondack trout anglers spend the early season gathering together the gear, scouring the maps and readying their equipment and gathering together all of the usual flies, lies and lures that will be necessary for the first trip of the season.

My traditional run-up to the upcoming seasons generally begins in late March, with a visit to the annual NYS Outdoor Guides Association Annual Rendezvous.

The event brings together licensed guides from all across the state, to talk of hunting turkey, and big bucks, or whitewater rafting and wood ducks.

It is a time to share the tales and techniques of wilderness adventures in the camaraderie of a group of like minded men, and women.

It’s a place to discover the best fishing hole or deer run, and to learn how to hunt or fish it or hunt it once you’re there.

But most of all, the annual Rendezvous provides the assembled guides an opportunity to catch up on new standards, and to share and discuss professional concerns with DEC personnel.

The Rendezvous also provides aspiring guides with opportunities for professional training, and to obtain the required competencies in First Aid, Water Safety that are required for the getting a license.

On traditional Adirondack adventures, the guides were responsible for providing and preparing the food, shelter, transportation and for establishing the camp. In addition to ensuring the safety of the party, guides also made the necessary preparations and gathered all of the supplies necessary for an outing that could last from a week or more in the woods.

Guides would also supply the boats, tents, packs and other gear necessary for traveling, fishing, hunting and camping.

They did everything to ensure the trip was successful, and served in a wide capacity of roles ranging from cook and bottle washer to waiter and storytellers.

In a vocational sense, guides also serve as educators and mentors, counselors and woods-wise instructors. WeÕ ve also been known to fill in as a disciplinarian and coach, cheerleader and judge, part-time clergy and stepfathers Most of the guides I know, remain a rather independent lot, and theyÕ re usually just as skilled in building character, as they are in judging it.

As a group, theyÕ ve been known to tell of few tall tales, but generally their stories are never exaggerated too far beyond what an average guest can be expected to believe.

It has been said a good guide was someone who can take a neophyte, city dweller into the woods, shoot a deer for him, dress it and drag it out; and be ready to knock down the first man who dares to claim his client didnÕ t shoot it.

Although very few of todayÕ s guides would be willing to admit to such shenanigans, I will admit to adding more than a few inches to the size of a guestÕ s trout while recounting a tale of their fishing expertise.

Times have changed dramatically from the old days of guiding, when consumptive sports were the rule and the adventures consisted primarily of fishing and hunting exploits. Back then, camp chores were attended to almost exclusively by the guides, Ò who were available for hire at all the local taverns.Ó The guides set out the tents or ‘shanties’, kindled the fires they later cooked over, and remained rather aloof or apart from the conversations of their cultured city Ô sportsÕ .

In the current era, guides still perform the same chores, however todayÕ s Ô sportsÕ are often more eager to join in and learn how to do it themselves.

Primarily, the qualifications still require a strong back and a weak mind, but we still sell memories, and strive to provide a safe and rewarding experience.

Guide must also be well versed in Forest Preserve Rules and Regulations, trip planning and preparation, which concerns both the weather and the season, as well as the clientsÕ preferences, habits and expectations.

Guides must also be physically able to perform a variety of tasks, while confronting any number of potential threats and problems ranging from black flies to black bears, homesick kids to and an assortment of other common calamities, allergies and potential tragedies as severe as a lost cell phone.

Despite the worst of rain, terrain, snow and heavy blow, a guide must always report to work, even when the others remain snug in their bags. A guideÕ s job is to keep everyone in camp, safe, comfortable and happy, regardless of all the external circumstances to the contrary.

Often, today’s “sports” want to learn how to kindle a fire, or to cast a fly; and they are even eager to portage a boat over the carries.

Conversely, IÕ m often eager to allow them to haul a boat, even if it does seem to be bending the expected qualifications of a guide Ò possessing both a strong back and a weak mind.Ó In 1869, William H. H. Murray, writing under the penname of Ô NessmukÕ published Ò Adventures in the Wilderness or Camp-Life in the Adirondacks.” It was the first guide book for tourists and it described various sections of the northern wilderness. It also provided a list of lodgings and advice on guides.

In a section on selecting a guide, Murray, a Boston minister explained: Ò This is the most important of all considerations for one about to visit the wilderness. An ignorant, lazy, low-bred guide is a nuisance in camp and useless everywhere else. A skillful, active, well-mannered guide, on the other hand, is a joy and consolation, a source of constant pleasure to the whole party.Ó MurrayÕ s assessment remains as true today as it did in 1869, and as it likely will in 2169.

Gobbler gospel and cutting hair

Õ m always yelping about buying local if possible, so when I found out about Mountain Hollow Game Calls, I knew I had to meet these guys.

During my walk through the Yankee SportsmanÕ s Show, I chatted with a fellow that had a display table set up. As a hunter, I am always interested in turkey calls, and the Mountain Hollow Game Calls booth was a bit of gobbler heaven.

After buying three of my favorite mouth calls, one being an Orange Raspy Hen, I got talking to some of the staff.

By Rich Redman In short time they introduced me to Ken Hammel, the owner and head of the family owned, local business out of Potsdam New York.

Originally, the business venture was located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, by Ken and a friend. However, after KenÕ s friend passed away, it was time for a change. Ken was offered a pastors position in Saint Lawrence County, so Ken, his family, and the business moved to Potsdam. This was a rare happening; a company moving into NY. It seems; most move out. (Things havenÕ t changed. Now we have to wonder about the Remington Arms Company in Ilion moving to Alabama).

Now after 32 years, the Mountain Hollow boys still produce many handmade calls. The company is small compared to nationally known companies like Primos. But Ken says they are big enough, sometimes too big. The pro staff assembles many of the calls themselves, and the big seller is the Double Talk Extreme; glass over slate friction call. (Reminds me of a few old key calls, he was preaching the Gobbler Gospel. big mouth co-workers of mine, all talk)!

IÕ m a big fan of the raspy sound. I have killed a few gobblers when they came strutting in to what they thought was gonna be a little romantic interlude, only to find an old Remington Model 11 pointed their way.

The company also produces deer calls, scents, doe urine and turkey box calls. If you google them at Mountain Hollow Game Calls, you will be amazed at what is being produced in our neck of the woods.

Spring is coming our way, believe it or not and every once in a while my mind wanders towards opening day turkey season. Keep your ears open this turkey season; you may even hear the Ò Gobbler GospelÓ as Pastor Ken, starts preaching to the birds, with one of his game calls!

Cutting hair and cutting for Tom’s!

Back in the late 70Õ s getting a haircut wasnÕ t on my agenda growing up in Western NY. I had other things on my mind. I was just a Ò Simple Kinda ManÓ , going to Rich Stadium to see Lynyrd Skynyrd and hearing Ó Free BirdÓ .

Just down the road from Rich Stadium was the budding infancy business of another kind of free bird. Orchard Park is not only home to the Buffalo Bills, but Quaker Boy Game Calls was hatched there as well.

Originally they were the Quaker Boy Barber Shop and Quaker Girl Beauty Shop, owned and operated by Dick Kirby, the barber and his wife Beverly, who ran the beauty shop. The Quaker Boy Company name originated from the Quakers, who first settled in the Orchard Park area.

As an avid turkey hunter and Wild Turkey Federation member, Dick created his own calls for personal use. His first mouth call was made with a balloon, a piece of aluminum siding cut to size with tin snips and held together with duct tape. Now, thatÕ s cool! True blue MacGyver!

Cutting hair and talking turkey with customers, led to making calls for customers, and eventually it became more profitable than haircuts.

The transition was made, and now after 30 years the family owned and operated business continues. Quaker Boy Calls are one of the top turkey call businessÕ s in the nation. The Quaker Boy Company, not only make turkey calls; they also sell predator, deer, elk, moose and waterfowl calls and hunting equipment. Google, Quaker Boy Game Calls, and you will see how a family hobby and business grew to national proportions.

Dirk Kirby passed away a few years back, but his heritage of creating some of the top turkey calls and his dedication to Wild Turkey habitat lives on.

New York is a great place to hunt and fish. We have a bounty of turkeys, (especially in Albany) deer, bear, grouse, trout, walleyes, salmon and other fish and wildlife, due to the conservation efforts of concerned citizens and dedicated conservation employees, despite the politics and bureaucracy. We can do more though!

If you want access to lands, the management of property to restore and provide quality habitats, the ability to hike, camp, hunt and fish and you want to keep it that way, please get involved in one of your local fish and wildlife groups such as Trout Unlimited, the Wild Turkey Federation, Whitetails Unlimited, the Ruffed Grouse Society, the National Rifle Association, Farm Bureau and the NYS Conservation Council. They say the world is run by those who attend the meetings. So I ask: Ò who do you want, or donÕ t you want to take your place, if you donÕ t goÓ ? Get involved!

The battle to KEEP our RIGHTS is never ending. Reminds me of another Skynyrd song, Ò Gimme Back My BulletsÓ !

HeÕ s a four-time state champion and All-America in track. HeÕ s expected to be named Ticonderoga High School valedictorian in a few weeks.

ThatÕ s why colleges across the country recruited him.

ItÕ s also why he choose Harvard. Ò I always strive to do my best,Ó Hebert said. Ò That includes my education. I want to get the best education possible. I think I can do that at Harvard.Ó Hebert made it official during a ceremony at Ti High March 27 Ñ heÕ ll attend Harvard to continue his academic and track careers. He had been recruited by the University of Southern California, University of Nebraska, Syracuse University and a host of other colleges.

Ivy League colleges like Harvard do not offer athletic scholarships. Harvard will, however, provide Hebert with comparable financial aid.

Success hasnÕ t come easily for Hebert. Ò HeÕ s worked really hard,Ó his father, Pat, said. Ò He comes home from school and he does his homework. WeÕ ve never had to ask him to do his homework. All summer heÕ s up at 5 in the morning to work out at the track. He knows how to work hard.Ó That work has paid off.

Hebert earned became an All-American with a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the New Balance National Indoor Track & Field Championships in New York City March 16. The top six runners were named All-American.

Hebert clocked 8.04 seconds in the final. Isaiah Moore of Burlington. N.C., won the race in 7.79 with Grant Holloway of Chesapeake, Va., second in 7.93 and D-Ante Yarborough of Ashburn, Va., third in 7.95.

Two weeks before that, Hebert won his fourth straight hurdles state championship, taking the 55-meter event. He won the 110-meter hurdles at the outdoor championships in 2012, then captured the 55-meter hurdles indoors and the 110 hurdles outdoors in 2013.

“When I first saw Jay as a seventh grader I knew he could be special,Ó Walter Thorne, Ti track coach, said. Ò I told his parents he had the potential to be great. I can see him reaching the Olympics. Ò IÕ ve had a lot of really good athletes, but Jay is the whole package,Ó Thorne said. Ò Not only does he have the talent, he has the work ethic. ItÕ s no accident heÕ s good.Ó Hebert will leave Ti High this spring as Section VIIÕ s most decorated track athlete. No one else can match his four state titles. Ò HeÕ s the best sprinter ever in our section,Ó Thorne said. Ò ItÕ s not even close.Ó

With a personal best of 22.6 seconds for 200 meters, Thorne believes Hebert will be a versatile contributor to the Harvard track program, although heÕ ll continue to concentrate on the hurdles. Ò He did the 400 (meter) hurdles as a freshman and I believe he can run 21 (seconds) in the 200,” Thorne said of Hebert. “His first 50 meters is easy, smooth and very fast. HeÕ s a great sprinter.Ó HebertÕ s success is especially impressive when one considers he lives in the north. While athletes in warmer climates train outside all year, Hebert spends the winter months running in the halls of Ti High. At the national championship meet he was the top runner from the north.

In the process of reaching the national championship race Hebert set a Section VII record for the event. He ran 7.86 seconds in the semifinal round.

The national championship event was a different challenge for Hebert. He had competed in the 55-meter hurdles all season, while the rest of the country runs 60 meters.

With his college decision behind him, Hebert is now focused on the outdoor track season. His goals are simple. Ò I want to improve, to be faster,Ó he said.

Whatever Hebert does, his parents will be there to see him. Ò We havenÕ t missed a meet since seventh grade,Ó his mother, Julie said. Ò WeÕ ve never missed a meet. ThatÕ s one of the good things about Harvard. All the Ivy League schools are within 4-5 hours (drive), so weÕ ll be able to see some of his meets.Ó
