Congressman Bill Owens and state Sen. Betty Little braved a chilly 20 degree morning for the official tapping of a tree next to the Parker’s new state-of-the-art evaporator, which was already in full swing boiling down sap to make the sweet golden treat which is one of the cornerstones of the region’s agribusiness. Sponsored by the Adirondack Coast Visitor’s Bureau, this was actually the first of two Maple Weekends in our region. Events will be CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

CHAZY — A Virginia Civil War historian has tapped into a local resource to help write a history of the 16th New York Cavalry during the Civil War. James Carson, from Vienna Virginia, was combing the internet looking for online information on members of the 16th New York, when he stumbled upon the Alice T. Miner museum. The museum has painstakingly transcribed and digitized the letters of Lt. Charles F. Moore from Champlain. Moore, a descendent of both the Moore’s and Mooers’ from Champlain and Mooers, who wrote to his mother and other members of his family extensively during his tenure in the Civil War. The letters are part of the museum’s Civil War collection.

Moore’s letters, according to Carson, offered a different take on the war than most letters of the day. Many soldiers, he said, chose to write very formally and avoid conversation of the day to day realities of camp life. Moore wrote differently.

“It provided a lot of personal insight into the conditions and situations that the soldiers found themselves in Northern Virginia…the atmospherics and an appreciation for what they were going through,” said Carson. “He was really a good writer.”

KEENE VALLEY — Help children and families by donating items such as clothing, shoes, winter apparel, toys, books, games, blankets, arts and crafts for newborn to school-age children in new or good condition through a donation drive led by Keene Central School senior Tucker Geoger. Where do you hope to be a year from now?

Hopefully, we’ll be doing a lot of cool shows. But I like the pace we’re at now because we’re not at a famous level. Once thing I like about this band is that we all share [laughs]. We share everything. I also see myself working on my solo project, but it’s all related. I feel that it has made me a better person to be in this band because everyone’s striving for the same thing.

Project H.E.L.P. brings volunteer opportunities to SUNY

denpubs@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — A group of students stand hand in hand to help the community, linking to each other to create what is known today as Project H.E.L.P. Project H.E.L.P. (Hands Engaged in Linking People) started at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1994 and has been growing since.

“Often times, students come in because they want to meet new people and also feel more connected with the Plattsburgh community, and, in addition, many Greek organizations at SUNY Plattsburgh are very involved with community service, as well as many clubs and organizations,” said Zach Ribert, Project H.E.L.P. coordinator. “These groups enjoy volunteering as groups because it also is a great bonding experience.”

The mission of this on-going service program, according to the Project H.E.L.P. page on SUNY Plattsburgh’s website, “is to provide students with volunteer experiences that are compatible with their interests, passions, talents and skills and that foster a sense of responsibility while meeting the needs of the local community. “ This program takes students and gets them into the spirit of volunteerism in the community, gaining a variety of experiences, becoming

aware of societal issues and, overall, having fun.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about themselves,” said Michael Cashman, assistant director of campus activities and supervisor of Project H.E.L.P. Project H.E.L.P. offers volunteer opportunities with children such as Momot Elementary School lunch buddies Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oak Street Elementary study buddies Tuesday through Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Stafford Middle School mentoring program volunteers at various times during the school year assisting students completing homework assignments, coping with social concerns and organizing games and activities.

Also, the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen utilizes volunteers Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to assist with meal preparation, serving the meals and cleaning up.

Project H.E.L.P also offers volunteer opportunities with the elderly at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, assisting with activities such as bingo, arts and crafts, social events and friendly visits. Times vary each week depending on when the activities are scheduled and the volunteers’ availability.

“I have volunteered at a handful of organizations,” Ribert said. “My favorite experiences

volunteering have been when I’ve worked with Habitat for Humanity as part of the Alternative Spring Break Program.

“This was an experience that was full of excitement, fun and, of course some challenges, but it was arguably one of the best weeks of my life.”

Each of these on-going programs requires a long-term commitment, at least two times per month depending on the students’ schedule. If transportation becomes an issue, Project H.E.L.P provides transportation to different locations Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A 24 hour sign-up with a name and phone number is needed ahead of time for a van ride.

A specific departure time will be needed, as well.

If students are more interested in one-time volunteer opportunities, they can assist in a number of Clinton County agencies that offer one-time service event needs such as fundraising for American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, Adopt-a-Block neighborhood roadside clean up, fundraising for the March of Dimes and participating in food drives for local food shelves.

Another one-time volunteer opportunity will be the United Way Day of Caring that will take place April 5 to help people in need throughout Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. Church groups, businesses, school groups, clubs, com-

Donation effort helps environment

denpubs@denpubs.com DANNEMORA — Periodically, librarians visit their collection of books and determine those volumes that need to be removed.

In recent months, the Dannemora Free Library weeded its collection.

Discarded books were made available for purchase; others were offered as “free to a good home.” Because many were still available, research was done to determine a way to offer them for recycling and reuse. Such an agency was found and books were shipped. The following report was received as a result of the donation.

Nine hundred eighty five books shipped, 930 pounds were recycled, a process in which 97 percent of the book becomes usable

fiber. This represented the saving of 10 trees, a mix of hard and softwoods, 40 feet tall and 6-8 inches in diameter.

These recycled books also represent 3,949 gallons of water, 1,429 pounds of greenhouse gases, 1 cubic yard of landfill space and 2,208 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Similarly, because 285 of the books were reused, they were sold or donated. Rather than being sent to a landfill, their continued use represents the saving of four trees, 3,720 gallons of water, 617 pounds of greenhouse gases and 954 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Trustees of the Dannemora Free Library commended the process and its contribution to saving the environment.

“Last year, our students were involved in 40 sites out of 70 that were offered that day,” Cashman said. “Our student body collectively helped volunteer over a thousand hours.”

“Students shouldn’t feel pressured when volunteering,” Ribert said. “It can be a very fun and eye-opening experience that many never forget.”

Egg hunt planned at Wesleyan Church

PLATTSBURGH – Turnpike Wesleyan Church will host their annual Celebrate the Son Egg Hunt and carnival style Fun Day on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 11 a.m. The day’s events will start with the egg hunt and then will continue with various activities that will take place throughout the church and church grounds.

In addition to the egg hunt, highlighted activities include egg coloring, Easter crafts, face painting, carnival games, a bounce house, and giveaways. We will also have food which includes hot dogs, drinks, cotton candy, and popcorn.

This activity is free and open to the public and is particularly geared toward families with children up to 6th grade.

hey may very well have had a point.

Last Friday, local teachers and parents stood outside the Glens Falls and Plattsburgh offices of New York State Sen. Elizabeth “Betty” Little to protest a pair of key issues when it comes to education funding within the state.

The first issue is easy enough: Why would anyone in the North Country care about funding for charter schools? Those who have come out in support of passing funding to the publicly paid for, but independently run, academies that, according to the state Department of Education, “create and sustain excellent educational options for New York State families on behalf of the Board of Regents through high quality charter school authorizing, fair and transparent oversight of all charter schools, and the dissemination of innovative school designs and practices.”

Sounds great, but the closest charter school for North Country students is located in Troy or Albany, a one-plus hour drive for our southern-most readers and almost three hours for those by the Canadian border.

So there are no charter schools in the district that Little represents, which makes it very easy to understand why teachers and parents are upset with Little voting in favor of bills that would shift funding away from public schools and toward charter institutions. Sen. Little, you represent a district that has no charter schools and therefore should be mindful of the needs of your constituents.

Little has been a champion for business rights within the Adirondack Park. She has brought millions in grant funding to towns in desperate need of infrastructure repairs and was on the front lines of Tropical Storm Irene relief. All these things she was praised for, but many families watching their taxes go up and their quality of education go down as teachers lose their jobs are losing their patience when they hear about the glory of charter schools they have no chance of sending their children to.

This leads to another issue, one Little has said recently she is trying to help eliminate: the Gap Elimination Adjustment.

Under Former Gov. David Paterson, the GEA was used to balance a state budget that was out of control according to Albany lawmakers. It continued under Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who swore the budget would get better.

Guess what, it has, as Cuomo touts a budget surplus that will be realized in the next two years.

Congratulations! The GEA worked and now we can go back to business as usual.

Ehh, not so fast.

Both Cuomo and the legislature are dragging their feet on this one, wanting to keep the money that should be going to local public schools away or moving it into charter schools.

What does this mean for local schools? Elizabethtown-Lewis Superintendent Scott Osborne said his school has cut all that they can without affecting the quality of education provided to students and the fund balance will shortly dry up. He almost drops to his knees whenever he talks about the desperate need to restore the GEA. Minerva Central School has already started to look at consolidation of high school services with Johnsburg because of the strain put on them by a state budget that gives them less money yet asks them not to raise more than the two percent tax cap.

In Glens Falls, the district is looking to fill a gap that is over $3 million while knowing money that is supposed to come to them is being held captive by lawmakers, including herself.

We all know people in the North Country feel, at times, their voice is not heard in Albany. Little has been someone who has helped overcome that stigma, and local families are asking for that help again. That is why they are protesting at her offices, because they feel she can affect change for them.

So, to all of our local officials at the state level, keep in mind the needs of local students and schools this budget season, help to eliminate the GEA and keep money coming to our school children and not urban charter schools. Ñ

Style & Substance: On getting through the work week Dear Style & Substance, Monday mornings have become unbearable for me. I spend Saturdays decompressing from the week and Sundays dreading the start of the workweek. You will probably advise to start looking for a new job, but that may not be a possibility for me. Any tips to make it a little easier?

Let’s all face it, a full work week can be draining, and Mondays seem to come all too quickly! It sounds like you understand what weekends should be for, but you are unable to disconnect, reboot and enjoy the other aspects of your life. You bring your job home with you and let it effect your free time and possibly your family. Weekends or time off should be both enjoyable and refreshing and you might be surprised to find that in order to experience the positive effects, most people have to WORK at letting go of the work week and stepping into down time.

Rather than looking for another job, you may need to consciously explore your job duties/expectations and the time management needed to fulfill these demands of both the job and your supervisor. We would recommend a writing exercise to give you a visual guide of how you are spending your time. If you can begin to slightly alter or restructure your work week, with the idea of wrapping it up on Friday, you may find that this extra hour spent at work frees your mind up to begin the weekend.

The writing exercise can begin with a calendar or chart. Remember the gold star chart from first grade? (hopefully this was a happy time in your life) Using your job description as a framework, begin designing your chart. Have fun with this exercise, as you have enough grown up stress related to work. Now that you have a design for your chart based on your job description, you can plan. First, write down all of the things you do in a work day that you like to do. Next, write down the tasks that you consider essential to doing your job, then, create a list of tasks you need or want to do but always seem to neglect or complete in a minimal fashion. Lastly, create a list of activities that you consider distractions. You now have the material to analyze and complete your calendar or chart.

Once you have created an overview, share it with your supervisor. Schedule this conversation with your supervisor so he or she knows how committed you are to your work and success.

tations you both have for this position within your organization.

Once agreement is reached, you are ready to put your plan into action.

Start Monday morning with your plan and a fresh sheet of gold stars. Review the typical distractions of your day and either get those tasks out of the way early or make a plan to avoid those distractions if not related to your job responsibilities. Every time you complete an item on your chart, give yourself a star. As silly as that might seem, we all respond well to praise – even selfpraise. Praise for a job well done is the best motivator. Not only will you be motivated to stay on course so you can enjoy your weekend, you will most likely reconnect with the enthusiasm you felt for your work when you initially started your job.

You may need to redesign your chart after the first week. Use your stars to measure success as well as areas where you would like to improve your performance. Be sure to schedule a review session with your supervisor once you have had some time to work through your new work plan. You may find that your job is too much and that can be a discussion you and your supervisor can have based on the plan, rather than emotion and stress.

Having practiced with your work chart, use the same writing exercise to manage and realign your weekend. You may find this is unnecessary because your stress level decreased due to a happier work week. Use your car ride home on Friday afternoon to

Having a sounding board in your home life can be a blessing and a curse; it may have created a habitual communication pattern, where you complain/ramble and your partner/friends accept it and let it continue without constructive feedback in a reasonable time frame. Should this be the case; discuss it with them and come up with a fair and compassionate solution such as, “When I am complaining or running on about work, please remind me that I need to refocus and let things go.” It needs to be acknowledged and determined by YOU. You may discover that your weekend is stressful for the same reason as your workweek, too much to accomplish in too little time. If this is your truth, realign your expectations for yourself and your family. If your mood from work is affecting others in your home, you are cultivating a negative environment. The effects on others are mirrored, so they come back at you in duplicate and you lose any refuge from stress.

Stress is insidious – it creeps into all areas of your life and before you know it, the damage has been done – relationships are strained and zest for life is lost. While we often think that happiness is spontaneous, PLANNING for joy and contentment can help you get back on track to a happier and healthier you.

First Weekends lays out plans for April’s First Weekend PLATTSBURGH — First Weekends is ready for the 2014 season!

Unlike most units formed during the Civil War which were from one specific geographic area, the 16th was a “hodgepodge” unit according to Carson, made up of soldiers from several different locations throughout New York. Because of that, there was very little cohesion within the unit, and quite a bit of infighting and intrigue. The 16th, which was assigned to Northern Virginia as part of the defenses of Washington D.C., were largely considered to be ineffectual as a unit because of this. Moore’s letters home detailed much of this infighting and intrigue, largely between the West Point trained regular army officers and volunteer, non-West Point officers.

Congressional candidate Joe Gilbert lays out his platform GOP hopeful talks energy policies, free market, governmental overreach

pete@denpubs.com DEKALB JUNCTION — On June 28, 1985, Joe Gilbert graduated from high school in Ogdensburg, a small city in St. Lawrence County.

The following day, he found himself at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri for basic training.

“I joined the army right out of high school,” the GOP hopeful said during an interview conducted as the candidate sat on the back porch of his farm in Dekalb Junction. “Back then, during the Reagan years, the country was on the upswing — there was a sense of optimism and a good economy. That’s the country I wanted to serve… and I did.”

After 24 years, Gilbert returned to the North Country and touched down to a changed landscape.

Manufacturing jobs had left the region and factories were closed. Family-owned dairy farms faced tough times and several of Gilbert’s family members, including his uncles, were out of work.

“It wasn’t the North Country I left,” he said.

Gilbert, 47, said the country is in a prolonged state of decline, a direct result of what he views as a sharp tack away from its founding principles as laid out in the Constitution in 1787.

“It’s the government’s job to defend our rights and they’re acting well beyond their original scope. Federal agencies are being used as a weapon against the people,” he said, citing the recent IRS and NSA scandals.

“Something was off-track and needed to be righted — and that’s why I’m running for office.”

Overreach

Gilbert, who demonstrated an easygoing air and showcased little of the fiery rhetoric that has been a hallmark of the Tea Party movement to which he is aligned, said the federal government should limit themselves to the 18 enumerated powers listed in the Constitution.

“Just because something needs or should be done, doesn’t mean it needs to be done by bureaucrats — it can be handled by state or local governments,” he said. “There are four levels of government between from where I’m sitting and the federal level. Ninety-five percent of governance should come from people you can walk down the street to talk to.”

Gilbert, a father of two young children, cited the controversial education initiative Common Core as an example of government overreach.

“The federal government should not be involved in education — the Department of Education, which isn’t in the Constitution, sucks up millions of dollars just running itself. Every single one of those dollars come from the states and their policies are derived from special interest groups imposing what they hope will become national standards.”

Gilbert said he didn’t want his four year-old son Ethan, named for his cousin Ethan Allen, the war hero who helped capture the Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775, to be subjected to federal mandates, including President Obama’s proposals to standardize early education for pre-schoolers and the First Lady’s push for a healthier citizenry.

“I think I can handle what my daughter can eat for lunch,” he said, referring to Mackenzie, who is six.

Energy

Gilbert said while he considers himself a conservationist and doesn’t want to see the environment degraded more than anyone else — he commented on the beauty of the pond on his 131 acres and the turkeys and deer clambering around it — the White House, he said, is burning the candle at both ends when it comes to charting the nation’s energy policies.

On one hand, he said, you have green advocates who are against any form of fossil fuel.

“It’s on their agenda to push green energy systems that are not economically viable,” he said. “The federal government pumps taxpayer money into them and they fail, like Solyndra,” he said, citing the thin-film solar cell manufacturer that received a halfbillion dollar loan guarantee by the Department of Energy before going bankrupt and shutting down in 2011 because it was unable to compete against more traditional solar cell technology.

Gilbert said the federal government makes existing energy sources — like coal, for example — so expensive through excessive taxation, it makes the green systems more attractive. But those systems exist solely on government subsidies from the EPA, he said, and prices rise when coal plants are closed as a result before the total energy supply is then diminished.

“I’m all for green energy once it becomes viable,” he said. “But let the free market innovate first and when they get on the same playing field as fossil fuels, then it’s time to rock and roll.”

Jobs

Gilbert said there’s only a few things the federal government can really do to create jobs.

First, he said, is reaching the state of energy independence. As the district’s representative, Gilbert said he’d approve permits and projects like the Keystone Pipeline that would lower energy prices.

“This would make everything cheaper and increase the amount of disposable income, something that would spur economic activity — a rising tide lifts all boats,” he said, echoing Reagan’s trickle-down theory.

Another way to encourage job creation, he said, would be to facilitate more economic activity with Canada through increased trade.

Gilbert said the country’s fiscal policies, namely the high levels of corporate tax, discourage investment and he would advocate for strong incentives to bring investment back to American shores by eliminating corporate income taxes for companies who decide to move their operations from overseas back to their native turf.

“Our corporate income tax is the highest in the world and we wonder why companies are leaving,” he said. “The overall answer is to get the government out of the market. If you unleash America’s entrepreneurial spirit, it’ll open the floodgates to creating wealth and economic expansion. But the government itself cannot create jobs.”

Gilbert said Americans have been conditioned to depend too much on political promises.

“We need to be more self-reliant,” he said. “The American dream is still out there — we just have to go for it. Don’t wait for a politician to deliver it to you.”

Military

Gilbert is the only candidate in the race who has served in the military.

His resume describes a quarter-century of service, including a stint as a Battalion Intelligence Staff Officer with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum in the late-1990s and as a Commander in the 203rd Military Intelligence Battalion’s C-Company, a unit that was assigned as the reconnaissance unit in support of the

Iraq Survey Group in the search for WMDs in Iraq.

“I conducted over 200 intelligence raids and recon missions throughout Iraq and we captured over 500 tons of enemy weapons and other materiel of military significance,” he said. “It was the largest repatriation of enemy weapons since World War II.” Gilbert said he is a strong advocate of national defense and disagrees with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s proposal last month to slim down the country’s armed forces.

“I come from a long proud family that was found in every conflict that America has ever been involved in.”

Citing Al-Qaeda’s continued territorial creep, the meddling of Iran in Syria and Iraq, the current situation in Ukraine and Russia and China’s rise as a global competitor, one that has been increasingly assertive in seeking to secure natural resources and global mineral rights, Gilbert said now is not the time to downsize and “project weakness” across the world.

“The rapid deployment forces at Fort Drum are only found in a few places in the army,” he said. “Only two other divisions can do what the 10th does and we need to maintain a rapid, vibrant military across all of our branches.”

“The world is still a very dangerous place and threats are more viable today than ever.”

Healthcare

“I will not be satisfied with anything short of a full repeal,” said Gilbert on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Gilbert said Obamacare is a “job killer” and a “trumped-up response to a pre-fabricated crisis” that will cost 2.3 million fulltime jobs by the time of its full implementation in 2020 and will eventually lead to rationed healthcare.

“It’s driving up costs,” he said. “The government is paying people to buy insurance and paying people to sell it.”

The candidate said there are free market answers to healthcare, including tort reform that would reduce the threat of frivolous lawsuits that drive up costs.

Guns, Constitutional rights

“The Second Amendment is no more important than the rest of them,” said Gilbert before ticking off a list of the pro-gun organizations to which he belongs. “You’ll find no stronger advocate than I am.”

Gilbert said the Second Amendment was put in place so the public can defend the others, from the first — protection of speech, religion and the press — to the fifth, which lays out legal protections, including the right to due process.

“The government can’t take those rights away because they didn’t give them to us,” said Gilbert, returning to a frequent talking point during the half-hour long interview. “All of those rights and powers are limited: we are the sovereign masters of government — ‘we the people’ impose those limits on the government that very clearly establish the relationship between the government and its citizens.”

Gilbert said course correction for the country will not be a quick process.

“We have to first to stop the decline, then we can think about recovery. But the government is not royalty and we are not serfs — and that’s what my campaign is about,” he said.

Gilbert is slated to face challengers Matt Doheny and Elise Stefanik for the Republican nomination on July 24. On the Democratic side, filmmaker Aaron Woolf and Steven Burke, a Macomb town board member in St. Lawrence County, are running for their party’s nomination. Glens Falls-based baker Matt Funciello and anti-cancer activist Don Hassig are vying for the Green Party’s support.

“These are the kinds of events that are really fun to come to, to see businesses that we’re hoping will see growth over the next couple of years,” said Owens in the Parker’s boiling room. “We’re in stiff competition with Quebec and Vermont, and we want to make sure that New York gets well known as a great place to buy Maple syrup. Maple weekend is really a great way to do that.”

Owens said that there is money in the recently passed Farm Bill for crop research, and he is hopeful that Upstate New York can reap some of those dollars for its Maple industry.

“Gathering and boiling sap is a long-time tradition for many North Country families,” said Little. “Maple syrup production ties well with agri-tourism, it creates jobs a revenue to benefit the economy, and with more and more interest in locally produced, all-natural foods, you simply can’t beat it.”

Maple Weekends was started several years ago by the North Country Chamber of Commerce through the Adirondack Coast Visitor’s Bureau as part of the push to bring local agribusiness to the fore, and to market both the local products produced in the North Country, as well as the region itself. Other kick-off events were hosted at 20 sugar houses across Clinton, Franklin and Essex Counties.

As a small crowd formed inside the sugar house, around the warmth of the Parker’s brand new pellet-fired evaporator, much of the talk was about the unusually harsh winter, and what effect it might have on the sugaring season. With the nearly perfect season last year a dim memory, many people are fearful for the potential crop this season. Family patriarch Earl Parker, who has worked in the family woods in West Chazy for nearly 70 years, was far from worried.

“I’ve seen this before,” he said about the slow start to the season. “It’ll warm up, that’s all.”

Even with the cold daytime temperatures, Parker has had some sap running already, and has already produced good quality syrup from the sap. If temperatures warm slowly enough, he says, sap can run all the way through April.

“We expect it to last.”

In the off-season, the Parkers invested in a massive wood pellet fired boiler, the largest in the United States according to Parker. They also utilize a reverse-osmosis process which removes up to 90 percent of the water from the sap prior to boiling. In the past, that additional 90 percent would have had to be boiled off through a lengthy and energy intensive process. The reverse osmosis processor combined with the new boiler has allowed the Parkers to increase their tap count to 50,000 this season, the most they have ever tapped.

After speeches were delivered and the small scrum of dignitaries and media left the warmth of the boiling room, Owens used a power-drill, under the watchful eye of Michael Parker and New York State Maple Princess Kylea McAdam, to set a tap in a Maple tree next to the building, and connect it to the miles of tubing crisscrossing the Parkers’ woods, officially kicking off sugaring season in the North Country.

Trout season starts very soon. The waters around our neck of the woods, will likely still be in the hard state, so

By Rich Redman traveling south is a viable option. Check out the Farmington River in Connecticut and the trout streams in Pennsylvania. As Buffet says’ “a change of latitude, and change of attitude”! Lower elevation streams will warm sooner than high mountain or hill streams so check out a stream guide before you venture out. You will get water temps, flows in CFS and suggested flies to use. With the storm systems that have hit the mid -south section of the east, you have got to check ahead to find the stream conditions, this won’t be an average year.

Rainbow trout will be doing their thing very soon, so check out the Salmon River and other Lake Ontario tribs, as well as the tribs to Lake Erie and other inland lakes and streams that have “bow” runs. Lake Ontario doesn’t freeze over, and the climate along the lake is a little mellower than we have, so it would be a good first choice. According to my western NY sources, Lake Erie is solid, and snow still covers the ground near the Cattaraugus. So things may get hopping a few weeks later little late this year. Then again, Mother Nature can throw another curve ball and we can go to instant summer and things will change fast. Once we get a few warm rains and the streams come up, get your waders on and be prepared for some combat fishing!

They will be featuring two separate categories, singing and variety, with contestants only allowed to enter one or the other, but not both. Prizes will be given in each category for both children and adults. Open auditions will be held May 9 at the American Legion Post 912 in Rouses Point.

The entry fee for auditions is a non-refundable $10. The singing competition will take place July 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the friends of the State performance stage, next to the Civic Center. The variety competition will be held Aug. 14. Prizes for these events will be $75 for kids under 16, and $125 for adults.

The grand finale, consisting of the highest placing acts from the two competitions, will be held Aug. 28, and finalists will compete for a $300 prize.

The deadline to sign up for the talent show is April 18.

Pfizer and Pepsico are cosponsors of the Friends of the Stage talent show.

Friends of the Stage hopes to raise enough money this year to add a high quality sound system to their recently constructed performance stage.

The Friends of the Stage are also sponsoring the all new 2014 edition of the Walker International Circus on Monday, April 14 with two shows at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Rec Center, 39 Lake Street, Rouses Point.

PLATTSBURGH — The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program has announced 27 farm research projects under way in 2014. The projects serve the diverse interests of the agricultural industry of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

Nearly 100 farmers participate as advisory committee members or commodity-focused subcommittee members with the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program.

The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) received $500,000 in funding in the 2013-2014 state budget through the New York State Senate with the support of NYS Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Senator Patty Ritchie, Senator Betty Little, and Senator Joe Griffo. State legislators are currently considering a request for NNYADP funding in the 2014-2015 budget.

“The state funding supports the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program research projects that connect farmers with the best academic and field experience in support of the dairy industry and crops, livestock, fresh produce and maple production,” says NNYADP Co-Chair Jon Greenwood of Madrid, St. Lawrence County.

“Every bit of last year’s funding has been to good use in support of Northern New York Agricultural Development Programselected research that advances our industry with innovative production efficiencies, cost-saving practices, and the latest information on coping with pest, disease and climate challenges,” says NNYADP Co-Chair Joe Giroux of Plattsburgh, Clinton County.

The unheralded success of the NNYADP project that has developed a low-cost, easy-to-implement, on-farm solution for man-

aging the highly destructive alfalfa snout beetle now appears to have potential benefits for fruit growers and other agricultural producers not only in Northern New York but statewide.

“The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program has a proven track record of cost-effective research that has underpinned the sustainability of farms across the region and allowed for the growth of new agricultural enterprises,” says recently-named NNYADP Co-Chair Jon Rulfs of Keeseville, Clinton County.

The Northern New York agricultural industry contributes nearly $600 million in agricultural product value annually with a nearly $53 million farm employee payroll.
