Surfside plans meet resistance

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ Various concerns over establishing a Business Improvement District in Lake George were raised by citizens at a public hearing Monday, Oct. 7, and their questions prompted the village board to delay a pending proposition to create such an entity by at least 30 days.

Business owners and residents of the district expressed concerns about the funding, budget, powers and parameters of such a district in the village, and whether it would create an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy as well as add substantially to property ownersÕ tax bills.

At the hearing, village Mayor Robert Blais introduced the BID proposal, which would add 61 cents per thousand onto village tax bills for properties in the district Ñ or about $306 for a property with a market value of $500,000.

He said the BID would provide a new public entity to improve the local streetscape, market the village to the public, promote local special CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

County drivers’ tests resume for limited hours

Warrensburgh Harvest Dinner planned

The annual Warrensburgh Riverfront Harvest Dinner, featuring locally harvested vegetables, is set for Monday Oct. 14.

Hosted by Lizzie Keays Restaurant in the historic shirt factory building on River Street, seating is from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.. This yearÕ s dinner will be offered with wine for $37 per person plus tax and 10 percent tip, and without wine for $30 per person plus add-ons. The dinner will include an array of appetizers, a choice of soup or salad and a selection of desserts and wines, with a main course buffet offering a variety of entrees, vegetables and grains. Flag retirement ceremony set

The American Legion Post 446 members in Warrensburg, will be hosting a flag retirement ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday Oct. 12 at their headquarters at 215 River St. All are invited to attend.

Flags can be dropped off at the following collection points: the Warrensburg Town Hall, the Legion post, and Direct Deposit recycling center on Main St.. Last year, more than 700 flags were collected for the ceremony.

Garlic Festival scheduled for Friday

The Riverside Farmers Market in Warrensburg is holding its annual Garlic Festival on Friday, Oct. 11. The event features garlic recipes, growing tips, and samplings of various garlic creations and products. This festival is a favorite area event. The Market is held weekly on Fridays from noon to 3 p.m.

QUEENSBURY Ñ Written driving tests were cancelled last week at the Warren County department of Motor Vehicles office and resumed Tuesday, Oct. 8 during limited hours Ñ as the DMV staff adjusted its operation to comply with new state mandates for testing oversight.

The state sent out new mandates requiring countiesÕ DMV staff to monitor people taking written and audio driving tests, in reaction to a recent cheating scandal in New York City in which eight people were arrested.

County Clerk Pam Vogel told county supervisors Oct. 2 that DMV offices across the state have been directed to

have test-takers continually observed by a county employee to assure that they donÕ t attempt to cheat, and donÕ t talk or use electronic devices.

This mandate, received Sept. 26, means a DMV employee will have to be taken away from a customer-service window and reassigned to testing. Until this week driver tests were administered generally when drivers requested to take them.

In response to the mandate, the tests will now be given during specific hours Ñ times that the customer service windows are not normally busy, Vogel said.

The change affects all tests offered including: learners permits, as well as general auto operator, motorcycle, CDL, escort, tow truck and Ò metal coilÓ exams, Vogel said. Ò WeÕ re going to do the best we can in

WARRENSBURG Ñ Characters expected to put in appearances this year at the Warrensburg cemetery and at Lizzie Keays Restaurant represent a variety of historic figures: people from before Warrensburg became a town to a time when a local man became world-famous.

They include a member of family who came here before William Bond who was supposedly the first settler, a woman who hosted the first town board meeting, a woman who left a great gift to Warrensburg, The event also features a man who left town at an early age but left a legacy that stands today, and a man who helped found the Presbyterian Church.

Two Graveyard Walks will be conducted at the cemetery. The first will be held Friday, Oct. 18 followed by a gourmet dessert buffet at the Cornerstone Victorian B&B, 3921 Main St.. Pug Party & Parade set for Sunday Oct. 20

CHESTERTOWN Ñ The 14th annual Chestertown Pug Party & Parade is set for Oct. 20 at Dynamite Hill Recreation Area.

This is a renowned event, drawing people from nearby states as well as from the Capital District. According to reports, itÕ s one of the biggest pug-related events in the state. Last year over 110 pugs and their families attended to show off their pugs and costumes. Surfside’s six stories slammed in review

Local resident Barbara Neubauer told the zoning board that approving AmersiÕ s request would set an unwanted precedent for such large buildings to be built on the lake side of the street.

But Amersi said no lake views now existed from sidewalks along Canada Street near his site.

He said it was his aim to replace aging, outdated motel units built in the 1950s with rooms that contain the amenities that todayÕ s travelers demand. He noted that the rooms he seeks to replace are 12 feet by 20 feet, and can barely accommodate two double beds, and not queen-size beds.

But Parrott warned the board that approving the plans would prompt a Ò domino effectÓ in development. She said sheÕ d heard various contractors talk about several emerging plans for motels to rebuild with taller structures. Ò This is our hometown, and donÕ t forget it,Ó she said.

Matt Sahler, a recent graduate of Lake George High School, said he didnÕ t want Lake George Village to transform into Myrtle Beach, which hosts dozens of buildings six stories and taller and over the years has lost its residential neighborhoods to development. He said allowing such an extensive height variance would cause development to Ò snowballÓ out of control. Ò This is so close to the lake, which is our heart and soul,Ó he said.

Amersi: Upgrades to enhance village

But Amersi said the building was planned to be its proposed size to accommodate sufficient parking, under the existing law, for the 60 units. Zoning amendments enacted since the Surfside was built call for more parking and larger spaces than in the past.

He said the proposed 10 rooms beyond the existing 50 were to assure the project would eventually pay for itself, citing an estimated project cost of $7 to

Amersi continued that Surfside needed upgraded rooms to continue to be competitive and financially viable, particularly considering that a new Marriott Courtyard hotel was likely to be built across the street, and other major hotel chains are seeking to build.

He said if his hotel expansion proposal was evaluated based on investment return alone, he would be wise to invest his money elsewhere. Ò IÕ m planning to invest in Surfside because I have a passion for my business, and to make sure my guests are content,Ó he said.

Gavin: Plan was to restrict tall buildings

Local activist Joanne Gavin offered her thoughts. Ò IÕ m all for good investment, she said. Ò But itÕ s the wrong place for something this high. The zoning steering committee was very clear about not extending the height on the east side of Canada Street because of the lake and the views.Ó Jan Loonan, as well as Sahler, said the villageÕ s limited infrastructure, primarily water and sewer services, might not be able to handle the unrestrained development that might occur over time. Ò WeÕ re forgetting about our history, our culture,Ó she said. Ò Our village is being raped.Ó Her final comment prompted applause by the audience.

Amersi, however, said that whatever he built would be an aesthetic asset to the village.

“The design and concept will fit in well with the village,” he said.

Amersi said the new building would be attractive, contemporary and include a 25-foot deck on the top two floors, complete with plantings and furnishings.

Residents wary variance sets precedent

LAKE GEORGE Ñ The idea of replacing the main building at Surfside Hotel with a six-story structure received an icy reception Wednesday, Oct. 2 from the Lake George Village Zoning Board of Appeals Ñ and prompted criticism from the public.

Salim Amersi, owner of Surfside on the Lake resort, is seeking a variance of village zoning code to build a 72-foot-tall structure in a zone that now allows up to three stories, 40 feet high maximum. The bottom two stories Ñ one of them halfway underground Ñ would serve as a parking garage.

Amersi and his architect, Dan Neary of Saratoga Springs, showed the board designs for the proposed development. The top four stories of the structure would contain 60 hotel rooms.

The existing building houses 50 rooms.

Lake George resident Pam Parrott told the Zoning Board of Appeals that a six-story building was a radical change Ñ that not even downtown Glens Falls had six-story buildings.

She said the dozens of people who opposed the recent zoning changes now allowing six stories in certain plots in the village Ñ primarily on the west side of Canada Street Ñ had been assured by village officials that the east side of the street was off-limits for buildings that tall, primarily to preserve views.

“We made a deal,” Parrott said. “We’re fighting for the soul and character of Lake George.Ó

Zoning Board of Appeals chairman Ron Mogren listened to the discussion and offered his thoughts. Ò IÕ m very troubled with this application,Ó he said. Ò It seems like a very extreme response to what your marketing needs are.Ó Several board members asked about whether the two stories of parking were really needed and, whether if fewer units were built, the parking garage would be unnecessary.

Amersi and Neary responded that the parking garage reduces sprawl by putting cars out of site while providing the space required by village code to accommodate todayÕ s larger vehicles.

Zoning board member Kevin Merry questioned whether the village had sufficient fire-fighting equipment to handle the sixstory structure. Board members pledged to seek out the answer.

Amersi offers to amend resort plans

After presenting his plans, Amersi suggested the board table the issue until their next meeting, and the board members voted to do so.

After the meeting, Amersi said he would soon be developing alternative plans for the boardÕ s consideration. Ò We still plan on upgrading,Ó he said. Ò And whatever we do, weÕ ll do it right.Ó

Burghers beat rivals with final surprise play

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ With time expired on the game clock and trailing in the score tally, the Warrensburg football team caught the Lake George Warriors off guard with a trick doublereverse 29-yard touchdown pass play. The result was a dramatic come-from-behind victory Friday, Oct. 4 in front of a capacity crowd.

The Lake George Ò Blue ZooÓ student cheering section had been standing behind the goal post, ready to rush onto the field to celebrate what had seemed to be a sure win, but the shocking final-play turnaround left them in stunned silence.

With three seconds left on the clock, threeyear Burgher quarterback Malachi Prosser took the ball, handed it to running back Connor Scott who swept toward the left sideline, but handed the ball off to receiver Jake Nemec who ran in the opposite direction. Under pressure, Nemec tossed the ball downfield to Prosser, who took the ball into the end zone to reverse the teamÕ s fortunes and win the 26-24 victory.

Powerful, elusive running by Scott had been a key factor in the game. He had tallied 257 yards rushing, including 75-yard and 65-yard runs. Scott was backed up by runs from Matt

Boodman, who helped move the ball downfield on the final drive.

The dramatic final play worked because the Warriors were probably keying on Scott, the athletic back speculated after the game. Ò The Lake George players were calling out my number throughout the game,Ó he said. Ò Then on that last play, they all followed me.Ó

Nemec nervous, throw on target

Nemec, a sophomore, said he was Ò pretty nervousÓ after coach Mike Leonbruno called the timeout with 3 seconds on the clock and proposed the strategic play.

“When he called the play, I got butterflies in my stomach Ñ I knew it was Ô make it or break itÕ for this big game,Ó Nemec said. Ò I looked downfield, Malachi was open, and as soon as I let go of the ball, I knew we were going to score.

I turned around and didnÕ t look Ñ while all our fans rushed onto the field.”

Nemec stayed where he threw the ball, while the other players piled into a joyous heap in the end zone. Ò I was speechless Ñ I was wicked happy,Ó Nemec said. Ò I was on top of the world ... It was the best feeling IÕ ve ever had.Ó Prosser also spoke of that last play. He recalled how the Lake George crowd shouted out Ò Two, One,Ó counting off the remaining sec-

Oktoberfest returns to Lake George

LAKE GEORGE Ñ A seasonal festival that was a smash hit in its debut edition last year is scheduled to be held this weekend, from Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday, Oct. 13 Last year, the village shut down its main drag Canada Street for a weekend — for the first time in decades. Locally produced craft beers were served up streetside, savory authentic Bavarian food was available too, and thousands attended over the weekend Ñ the festival was an instant sensation. Dozens of people from near and far, some in traditional German garb, others in casual wear, danced to the live German music.

Others visited dozens of vendorsÕ tents surrounding Shepard Park, browsing amongst their offerings including crafts with a European flair. Activities and games for children — and adults too Ñ were also featured.

This year’s edition of the Lake George Oktoberfest has all these amenities, including fireworks on Saturday evening. Three German and polka bands are to perform at various times through the weekend.

People should note that from early Saturday morning until Sunday evening, Canada Street will be closed to vehicles. For information, call the Chamber of Commerce at 668-5755.

Injury fired up players

Prosser speculated that the team had been fired up by the loss of teammate Rogers McLaughlin, a key blocker and defender, sidelined in the first half with a dislocated finger.

After he was taken away in an ambulance, the BurghersÕ resolve to win was strengthened, Prosser said. Ò Rogers gives 110 percent each play,Ó said Prosser, whoÕ s been a quarterback since third grade. Ò And our motto is Ô You mess with one of us, and youÕ ve got to deal with all of us.Õ Ó He continued that the running backs ran harder than ever, and the lineman were more aggressive after McLaughlinÕ s injury. Ò We knew that Rogers wanted to be in the game,Ó he said.

Throughout the game Ñ Lake GeorgeÕ s homecoming Ñ the lead changed often as each team made powerful drives.

Lake George running back Rick Jowly led the Warrior offense with 127 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Tyler Brown ran for two touchdowns.

Scott racked up the yardage

Burgher Connor Scott scored the first three touchdowns for Warrensburg. Leonbruno said Scott has emerged as a formidable threat in the Division. Ò Connor is one of the hardest runners IÕ ve coached,Ó said the former semi-pro Greenjackets star quarterback. “He fires through holes and then gains extra yards on his own Ñ he doesnÕ t go down easily.Ó But Scott deferred credit to the Burgher line and the teamÕ s coaching.

Post-season hopes rekindled

The last two weeks indeed represent a dramatic turnaround. The Burghers overcame the rival Warriors whoÕ ve prevailed in six of seven of the two teamsÕ meetups Ñ and last week, the Burghers blew away talented Fort Edward by a score of 56-14 powered by 388 rushing yards.

The prior two weeks, however, theyÕ d been steamrolled 0-53 by Salem, and 0-36 by Cambridge.

Lots to do in Bolton this weekend

Columbus Day weekend is sure to be busy in Bolton, as there is an extensive lineup of activities planned.

The Bolton Landing Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring BoltonÕ s Best Chili Cook-Off, to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12. Attendees get to pick which chili is their favorite by voting with tasting coupons. They can be purchased at the Bolton Town Hall or at the Bolton Chamber of CommerceÕ s headquarters, the familiar log cabin. Prizes will be awarded, but the contest is really about the bragging rights. After 75 years, Rose Bazan returns

Rose Rinella Bazan grew up in Glens Falls and first visited The Sagamore Hotel for her high school graduation dinner in 1938. Seventy-five years later, she returned recently to participate in her oldest granddaughterÕ s wedding. Kristie Robertson married Chris Coyne on Sunday, Sept. 29 at The Sagamore, and the wedding was followed by a reception at the hotel.

Rose, now 93, resides on Sacandaga Lake in Broadalbin.

Government watchdogs non-existent

Shutdown not why we sent them to Washington

n 1835, Alexis de Tocqueville warned of the possibility of a democratic nation sliding subtly, almost imperceptibly into a state of dictatorship.

“The first thing that strikes the observation is an innumerable multitude of men, all equal and alike, incessantly endeavoring to procure the petty and paltry pleasures with which they glut their lives,Ó he wrote. Ò ... he exists but in himself and for himself, and if his kindred still remain to him, he may be said at any rate to have lost his country.Ó We live in a world where our democracy is under attack, and the attackers are the very men and women we continue to elect to protect our rights. It used to be the place of the news media to keep the government in check, but they have largely abdicated that role, and our freedoms are suffering for it.

With recent revelations about successive presidential administrations using the Patriot Act to spy on our day-to-day phone records, social media usage, even the books we check out of the library, only the slightest murmurs of protest have been heard. The Patriot Act has been re-authorized, and even strengthened, numerous times by politicians of both political stripes.

When legitimate opposition groups have come to the fore, the government has employed the IRS to make the going as difficult for them as possible.

The revelations about our governmentÕ s efforts to spy on its own people have come primarily from two people. The first, Bradley Manning, now sits in a military prison where he is serving a 35-year sentence, and the other, Edward Snowden, is in exile in Russia, likely for the rest of his life.

Senators have publicly called for the death penalty for Snowden if he is ever tried here. Neither used an American media outlet to air their information.

The response from the American press? They have been dutifully silent, content to report on the latest petty and paltry pleasures de Tocqueville warned about.

Neither of these men will be confused with John Jay or Alexander Hamilton, but for the current day and age, any voice in the wilderness will do.

From the time of the Federalist Papers, right up to the era of Watergate, the media understood and accepted its role as watchdog, digging to uncover wrongdoing by politicians from either of the ruling parties. ItÕ s now become a lapdog, happy for the occasional morsel that might fall from the table of the ruling elite. Cutting-edge journalism has become who gets the newest Anthony Wiener pic out first.

Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels saw the importance of a complicit media when he wrote: Ò Think of the press as a great keyboard on which government can play.Ó While we have all been collectively distracted by the minutia of our own lives, our government has quietly but decisively learned to play the media like GoebbelsÕ great keyboard. Even the Ò opposition mediaÓ of AM talk radio serves as little more than a launching pad for the books, CDs, T-shirts and even iced tea hawked by the carnival barkers who pass for the voice of the opposition in this country.

Even on the local level, government controls access to the media with an iron grip. State workers fear for their jobs if they speak to the media. Even the stateÕ s public information specialists cannot answer freely, instead insisting questions be submitted in advance, so answers can be vetted by elected officials, when answered at all. The top DOT official in Essex County recently claimed he was targeted by the state for speaking to the media, and he was forced to retire.

Many saw the Internet and social media as the last great bastion for democratic thought and political dissent. While that certainly exists to some extent, with the recent revelations of government spying, how long could a political dissident survive online before coming onto the governmentÕ s radar screen?

A meaningful national shield law would be the first step to righting this listing ship, if it hasn’t in fact already capsized. There is currently a bill before the shuttered government called the Free Flow of Information Act which, if passed, would be a baby step in the direction of journalistic freedom.

Historic barn to be unveiled Saturday

THURMAN Ñ An extensive renovation of a towering, historic barn is nearly complete at Nettle Meadow Farm, and the public is invited to attend an unveiling of the structure at the farmÕ s annual Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday Oct. 12.

In conjunction with the Thurman Fall Farm Tour, this event includes the grand opening of the farmÕ s new cheese shop. Admission is free, and visitors can enjoy farm tours, cheese tastings, a childrenÕ s activity tent and live music from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Built in 1903 by local architect Edmund Barber, the landmark barn boasts a gambrel roof, atypical of barns in the region. Many visitors have talked about how this three-story barn was stateof-the-art in its era.

Many decades ago, the structure served as a horse barn for Meadowbrook Stock Farm, in an era when good horses were the currency of farming. Nettle Meadow has been farmed since the Johnson family, proprietors of Meadowbrook, bought it from John Thurman, the townÕ s founder, back in the late 1700s.

When Nettle Meadow owners Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase bought the farm in 2005, the old barn sagged although it still possessed much of its architectural grandeur. After Hurricane Irene in 2011, the barn suffered more deterioration.

About a year ago after achieving success making and selling award-winning cheeses nationally, Flanagan and Lambiase took on the project of reconstructing the barn, with the assistance of family members, neighbors, visitors and Farm Credit East.

With the help of their friend and local contractor Ed Carpenter, who initially shored up the old barn in 2005 to keep it from collapsing, Flanagan and Lambiase secured the services of Andy Leblanc, a barn restorer from Indian Lake. Andy repaired and replaced the timbers one-by-one and constructed new floors, walls and installed windows until the old barn was whole again Ñ but roof repair remained. Flanagan and Lambiase hired local residents Joel and Aaron Mosher who replaced the roof and its perlings and trusses individually until the roof line was straight again and the leaking stopped.

Once holding prize livestock, the vintage barn is now host to Flanagan and LambiaseÕ s Joseph F. Kemp Memorial Animal Sanctuary, housing animals too disabled or elderly to be productive. Ò The cast of rescue animals who have lived there is large and

each animalÕ s story is endearing,Ó Sheila Flanagan said this week, noting the creatures include two donkeys that were found wandering in Brooklyn.

Preferring death to capture, Charles P. Jones, 20, wanted for forgery and a fugitive from Justice for several months, when cornered by a sheriffÕ s posse at the home of Percy Bruce, in the town of Horicon early morning Oct. 15, 1913, placed the muzzle of a Savage rifle in his mouth and pulling the trigger blew the top of his head off.

Jones had been very successful in eluding the officers who were on his trail and it was not until this week that they saw a chance to get him.

Deputy Sheriff Charles Baker of Bakers Mills received information that the man was in hiding in the vicinity of his home on Landon Hill near Pottersville in the town of Chester. With Constable Thomas Alexander of North Creek, he went to Chestertown and securing five men there began searching for Jones. They visited several homes before they learned that he had been seen at the home of Percy Bruce, an isolated farmhouse in the town of Horicon, about two miles from Chestertown.

When the posse reached the Bruce place at 2:30 a.m. and after surrounding the house so that Jones could not escape, Baker approached the door alone and rapped and Bruce opened the door. The officer demanded that Jones, whom he knew to be hiding in the house, to be delivered to him at once. Bruce denied that Jones was there and the officers thought they could not enter without a search warrant, and withdrawing, Baker sent his son, Edgar Baker to secure one from Justice Charles I. Burge in Chestertown. Burge refused, saying that if they had a warrant for JonesÕ arrest, they had the authority to break in and arrest him.

The officer then pounded upon the door and was ready to break it down when the door opened suddenly and Bruce appeared with his gun. At that moment the report of another gun

was heard at the rear of the building and it was that shot that killed the fugitive who had boasted that he would never be taken alive and had gone to the woodshed behind the house and made good his boast.

The officers scattered for cover and shots went wild but no one was hurt as Mrs. Bruce and another woman went about screaming and Bruce was almost frantic. The officers entered the building and discovered that death had cheated them of their prey. Bruce quieted down and professed repentance for his conduct and he will not be charged.

Jones was wanted for passing bad checks in North Creek, Corinth, Schenectady and other places. He was successful as most of his checks were in small amounts. The body of the suicide was left lying in the woodshed until Oct. 16 when Coroner Goodman gave permission for its removal to the Jones home near Valentine Pond.

Jones has a mother who survives him, Sarah Jones, five brothers, Van, James, John, Melvin and Jordan Jones and three sisters, Mrs. George Pardee, Mrs. Clarence Eldridge and Miss Dora Jones.

Bad boy justice

Beecher Tripp, a former Warrensburgh boy, who several years ago was ordered by the authorities to leave the town for the townÕ s good, was arrested with two of his fellows, Claude Copeland and Henry Lashaway in Glens Falls for stealing umbrellas from the Masonic Temple building. They were sentenced in city court by Judge Safford, Tripp and Lashaway to 59 days in the county jail and Copeland to three months in the Albany Penitentiary.

Mrs. Mary Sage of Darrowsville, 104 years old and still bright and chipper, came to Warrensburgh Oct. 8, 1913 to spend a week or two with her daughter, Mrs. R.D. Hastings on First Street. Mrs. Sage, born in England, with her husband Courtney Sage, emigrated to this locality about 60 years ago.

Aged resident dies

Edwin Roberts, 82, passed away at his home at 42 West St. He was in his usual good health until two weeks ago when he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he did not rally. In 1863 he married Ann Eliza Leach who died June 11, 1906. Born Jan. 6, 1831, he was about 30 years old when he moved from Dorset, Vt., to Brant Lake where he spent the greater part of his life engaged in farming and in the fur business. His greatest pleasure was reading and discussing the Bible.

It seems as if department stores are gearing up for Christmas earlier and earlier every year, and while our family doesnÕ t have television, IÕ ve heard from friends that do, that the Christmas commercials also have started already. There are so many ways you can get involved, whether it be a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, adopting a less fortunate child for Christmas, filling one of the shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, or helping fill up the Christmas Baskets in the local time-honored program. These holiday baskets annually get filled with trinkets, baked goods and canned food items to show local seniors here in Thurman who are alone during the holiday season that we all are thinking of them.

One thing that stands in my mind from when I was a single mother was when I brought my children to a church in Glens Falls on Thanksgiving Day where we served plates of food to seniors and the less fortunate. I believe that taught them the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

That simple fact underscores everything about this shutdown.

When it comes to issues and politics weÕ ve lost the instinctive ability to recognize fact from fiction, to see the difference between those helping themselves at our expense and those genuinely sincere about serving their country. Day by day we are losing our way in the wilderness and neither side has put forth a leader that the country as a whole can have true faith in and get behind.

ItÕ s a sad commentary for a once proud nation, now lost in its own successes and careening further off course with every passing day.

Thurmanites to share their heritage Saturday

THURMAN Ñ Thurman farmers and friends will celebrate Saturday their heritage of coaxing a living from fields and forests during the Thurman Fall Farm Tour.

This annual self-guided visit to sites across this small mountain town features not hobbyists, but serious professionals dedicated to farming in an area that was settled by farmers and lumbermen hundreds of years ago.

During the Fall Farm Tour set for Saturday, Oct. 12, these Thurmanites will open their barn and sugarhouse doors to welcome visitors for tours, talks, demonstrations as well as tasting and shopping for farm goods. TheyÕ ll lead walks into sustainable tree farms and sugarbushes, or introduce guests to their barnyard animals, and pile onto a hay wagon for a trip into a pasture.

Most of the sites have extensive ties to the past. When Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase pack up a shipment of Nettle Meadow FarmÕ s nationally famous artisan cheese, they might well think of Katie Bennett, who one year in the 1920s churned one ton of butter when she and her husband farmed there.

A mile to the south, Gary Martin follows in the footsteps of his 7th great-grandfather, Caleb Reynolds when he starts up his sawmill at MartinÕ s Lumber. Reynolds was owner of the first sawmill in Thurman. Despite having different equipment, MartinÕ s challenges are much the same as his ancestorÕ s.

Farther down the road, Mike

Hill and Ralph Senecal of Valley Road Maple Farm tap some of the same maples that yielded sap to Thurman syrup producer Hollis Combs, a local legend who began tapping maples as a boy and continued into his early 90s.

At nearby Whitefield’s Farm, Don and Michelle grow vegetables and poultry the oldfashioned natural way, basing their operation in a large historic stone structure.

At Toad Hill Maple Farm, Randy and Jill Galusha are making maple syrup products, following in the tradition of RandyÕ s greatgrandfather, but with cutting-edge technology. Charles Wallace, too, boils sap on family property, still working with his dad, Jim, who started the operation now called Hidden Hollow Maple Farm.

Other sites along the Fall Farm Tour lay claim to history, too Ñ the Thurman Quilt Show at the town hall, where local quilters using new fabric and modern sewing machines mirror the art of their great-grandmothers, who salvaged fabric from worn-out clothing to piece together decorative bed linens. Some heritage quilts will be shown, too.

At each entrance to Thurman, a welcome tent will provide maps, directions, and staff will answer questions. The maps will direct guests to

the various sites, including the pancake breakfast at Valley Road Maple Farm, served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, and to Toad Hill Maple Farm, where the Thurman Fire Co. chicken barbecue will be available from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The day ends with drawings for two raffles,

one a handmade double quilt made and donated by Avis Russell of Thurman, and the other a post-and-beam garden shed frame made and donated by Andy LeBlanc of Indian Lake.

Horicon duck race, crafts event set

BRANT LAKE Ñ An enjoyable day for children is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 as the 2013 edition of the Great Brant Lake Duck Race & Family Fun Day takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day starts with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. at the Horicon firehouse, and the plastic ducks will be competing at noon at the Mill Pond.

Following the race, childrenÕ s activities including pumpkin painting and crafts are set for the Horicon town pavilion. More than 100 pumpkins have been harvested for children to paint and decorate for Halloween. There will be hot dogs, rolls, chips, and beverages. This annual favorite community event is held by the Friends of the Horicon Library at no charge.

events and spur improvement of store facades. Ò Business Improvement Districts have proven to be powerful economic development tools,Ó he said, citing a published study.

He noted that BIDs were very successful in accomplishing various objectives in Albany and Saratoga Springs as well as Glens Falls Ñ where the BIDÕ s levy is only one cent per $1,000 of property value.

Rob Gregor, an attorney who owns Motel Montreal, has been heading up a committee thatÕ s been planning a BID for Lake George and working to establish it.

He said that a Lake George BID would be a Ò very democraticÓ entity, as it would empower individuals and businesses in the district to better determine their own destiny. Ò WeÕ re all working toward a better village for future generations,Ó he said.

Others didnÕ t have such positivism about the concept.

Doug Frost, who both lives and owns commercial property in the proposed district, raised a variety of concerns.

He said that most all of the services and benefits cited in the BID proposal were already being accomplished by the village government Ñ without an additional tax. Ò I have a hard time with paying more taxes in a time the economy is tough,Ó he said. Ò ItÕ s not just the money, itÕ s giving up control of the money.Ó Jeff Rougeau, owner of the Sundowner Motel, expressed a similar viewpoint. Ò If I were asked to pay $200, no problem, we want to improve business in the village,Ó he said, citing that his BID assessment would be higher than that amount. Ò But this will add a layer of new taxes.Ó Gregor responded that the BID would be prohibited from duplicating existing services.

Frost as well as Mezzaluna Restaurant co-owner Carmella Mastrantoni warned that such services as village beautification, streetscape enhancement, sponsorship of events and fireworks could theoretically be shifted to the BID, boosting the tax levy for the BID property owners.

People asked about whether the BID could be dissolved if it wasnÕ t accomplishing its objectives. Village Attorney Matt Fuller said it could, if it fulfilled its obligations to repay all debts it had incurred.

Frost responded that he was uneasy about the potential consequences of the BID board of directors incurring debt. Ò I have a problem with people borrowing money that IÕ m obligated to repay,Ó he said.

Frost questioned why out of a proposed $150,000 budget for the BIDÕ s initial year, $45,000 of it would be spent on administrative costs. Gregor said that it was necessary to spend that much

Rare collectibles found all over

The bag that Kathy Schell was lugging back to her vehicle Saturday held a large M&M character holding a basketball, which dispenses M&Ms when you depress its left arm. This collectible edition is rare, but she bought it at the Warrensburg sale for $15. At home in Schenectady, Schell has an entire room dedicated to M&M collectibles, Bruce Schell said as he rolled his eyes. Ò Coming to this sale has saved me a trip to Vegas,Ó he quipped, noting last year they traveled there to buy a particular M&M character.

Octogenarian Jane LeCount, a co-founder of the WorldÕ s Largest Garage Sale, sat on her porch watching thousands pass by on the Main St. sidewalks. She and local activist Steve Parisi launched the sale in 1980, and it drew about 1,000 people that year. By 1983, the crowd had swelled to 25,000 or so. She coordinated the event for perhaps two decades. In recent years, crowds have numbered 70,000 or so, while organizers claim 100,000.

This year, the crowd numbered 75,000 on Saturday alone, event clean-up coordinator Gary Ross said.

LeCount looked past her small table of books and magazines she was selling, gazing at the crowd. Ò This is amazing Ñ I canÕ t believe how its grown,Ó LeCount said, noting that companion sales now are held in neighboring Chestertown, Lake George and Bolton. Ò IÕ m glad IÕ m not organizing this sale anymore.Ó Walking past LeCount was Michael Leone and his family from Syosset, L.I. Ñ He found antique Lionel train layout items, like shrubs and trees, in their original box. He bought the item for his father, a model train fan. Ò This is great,Ó he said looking at the lineup of vendors. “You can find everything you are looking for in one shot.Ó Leone also bought a classic Power Ranger lunchbox and a faux parking meter bank for his son Gabriel, 7.

to hire an effective, dynamic executive director. Frost countered that spending about one-third of a BIDÕ s budget for administration was too much.

Gregor replied that Business Improvement Districts generally raise money from corporate sponsorships, fundraising and receipts from events Ñ money that helps pay for the services it provides Ñ and the Lake George BID would seek such an approach to keep the BID levy as low as possible. He added that the BIDÕ s budget was capped at 20 percent of the villageÕ s tax levy.

Business owner and developer John Carr said he supported the concept of a BID if it pursued funding sources to augment the amount raised from the property owners.

Noting that the present village board was very attuned to supporting local commerce, events, and maintaining an attractive streetscape, he said that a BID would protect the local businesses from the loss of such benefits when the existing board members left office. Local entrepreneurs kept busy

Fifty feet away, David OÕ Neill of Warrensburg was demonstrating one of his coal-fired heating boilers that he said can save more than 60 percent of home heating costs. Ò Some people walking by think this is a whiskey still,Ó he said. Nearby, his wife Linda OÕ Neill was manning several booths displaying her silver and polished rock and gemstone jewelry. On Saturday, thousands of people examined her inventory which has expanded substantially in the past several years. Ò WeÕ re doing great this year,Ó she said.

Nearby, Sierra Jacques, 14, of Lewis NY stood curbside wearing a new zombie T-shirt she bought at a booth. Her family has been attending the WorldÕ s Largest sale for 17 years. Sierra and her sister Melissa, 12 and brother Ryan, 12, have been brought to the sale every year since they were born. SierraÕ s most enduring memory, was the 2009 sale when they walked a mile through town to buy five hermit crabs as pets, she said. Ò It was a long walk through this town,Ó she said.

Truck’s all yours for only $80,000

At the WorldÕ s largest Garage Sale on Oct. 5, people bought everything imaginable from dollar-store items to prized one-of-a kind antiques.

Around town, furniture and appliances were on sale as well as household goods.

Perhaps the highest-ticket item for sale at the event was a fire engine, priced at $80,000.

Parked in the Warrensburg firehall, it bore a pink sign reading Ò For Sale By Owner.Ó A 1993 pumper-tanker with only 12,925 miles on the odometer, firefighter Don Bagwell showed the massive fire truck to several interested buyers. Ò ItÕ s solid, fully equipped and in excellent condition,” Bagwell said. “One firefighter from Ontario who stopped by today is real interested in it for his fire company.”

At the Warrensburg firehall, firefighters were busy selling food Ñ and parking cars in their yard. The fire engine bays had tables set up for sit-down meals, quite popular with garage sale shoppers who were on their feet all morning.

The Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co. sold breakfasts, as well as hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch. At times, several long lines formed for their grilled food.

Ò Our biggest threat is that 10 years from now, we end up having a board thatÕ s not business-friendly.Ó Carr, however, urged that a portion of the village parking-meter revenue, which now exceeds $400,000 per year, go to fund the BID. He also said that some of the villageÕ s Occupancy Tax revenue, about $130,000 annually, also go towards the BIDÕ s budget.

Without such funding, the cost to business owners would likely be burdensome, he said. Ò I have grave concerns about a 20 percent tax hike,Ó he continued.

Village Board member John Root said heÕ d like to see the majority of the BIDÕ s budget be funded by Bed Tax receipts. Blais and Root both said that the business owners had a reputation for not working together, and the BID would force them to do so. Blais added the village has already pledged about $40,000 toward the BIDÕ s budget.

Kim Butterfield, a resident of McGillis Avenue, said she didn’t want to pay higher taxes, as she had no commercial operations that would benefit from a BID. Bill Liguori, a neighbor, expressed similar concerns. Gregor responded that individual property owners would indeed benefit, through higher property values stemming from a more prosperous community.

But Mastrantoni said she was opposed to a BID, calling for the layers of local government to be reduced, not expanded.

Sasha Pardy, co-owner of Adirondack Winery and a BID committee member, expressed her support for establishing the proposed entity because it would prompt streetscape improvements, foster new events, and boost local commerce. Ò I see so much potential,Ó she said.

Commercial property owner Patty Kirkpatrick also said she was in favor of such a new commercial district. Ò I see a BID as a perfect solution to taxation without representation,Ó she said. Ò People in the district would have a voice in how their money is spent.Ó Several homeowners, however, continued to raise objections to the additional tax levy, and said they should be excluded from the district Ñ which Fuller said was prohibited by state law. In response, several people suggested that the BIDÕ s bylaws call for granting a rebate to homeowners, and village officials said theyÕ d look into the concept.

After fielding a host of questions, Blais suggested that the BID committee amend its proposal. Gregor advised avid opponents in the crowd to not bank on changes to the plan, but to go forward in collecting signatures on petitions to oppose the proposal. If either 51 percent of the individual property owners vote against a proposed BID, or a number of votes that represent 51 percent of the assessed property value, the proposal is defeated, Blais said.

Mayor Blais concluded the meeting by leaving the public hearing open for a later date, which effectively extends the time period for objecting petitions to be filed and gives the BID committee time to re-draft their proposal.

Stopping by at the firehall for a chat were Stephanie and Trevor Paton, both active firefighters in their hometown of Woodstock, NY. TheyÕ ve been attending WarrensburgÕ s annual community sale for a half-dozen years because of the fun and bargains, Stephanie Paton said. Ò This is a great family-friendly event that must be good for the local economy,Ó she said, looking at the crowd on the streets. The couple bought a woodstove for their camp at Raquette Lake and a table and chairs for their childrenÕ s college apartment. Both were quite inexpensive, Trevor Paton said. Ò The really good deals are in the back streets,Ó he said.

Fast-food price war on Elm Street

Not far up Elm St., another impromptu fastfood operation was undercutting the firefighters — $2 per burger rather than $3 at the firehall.

Two college students stood curbside holding large handwritten signs, advertising Ò BobÕ s Burgers,Ó urging people to support BobÕ s college educational pursuits at SUNY Adirondack.

Bob, a culinary arts student and business major, was grilling up hamburgers. Four of his friends, also from ACC, were helping out.

Charmaine Foss of Lake George, Mary Anderson of Chestertown, Mace McCann of Lake George, Edmund DiPietro of Warrensburg and Jake Dunphy of Queensbury, most of them business students, were assisting.

Foss, a Marketing major, explained their strategy. Ò WeÕ re the cheapest in town,Ó she said.

Bob, however, said the groupÕ s demeanor was prompting the sales. He said that some people left very generous tips because they truly wanted to help him pay college expenses. Ò They like our charisma and smiles,Ó he said, grinning.

While Elm St. was crowded Saturday, Main St. was crammed. Sidewalks along Rte. 9 hosted people shoulder-to-shoulder.

StewartÕ s convenience store was busy. They had a dozen bales of hay set out in their parking lot near their entry door so weary shoppers could have a seat. Every bale was occupied mid-day. Inside their store, it was wall-to-wall people, and extra help including managers were busy scooping ice cream and ringing up sales.

Melissa Bliss of northern Warrensburg waited for an unoccupied bale. SheÕ d walked through downtown carrying a set of antique 1920s skis she bought. Her partner was off picking up three vintage wooden sleds theyÕ d bought for BlissÕ mother, Linda Montello of Corinth, to paint folk art on them. For $12, each, they couldnÕ t be passed up, Bliss said. Megan Bliss, 10, said she was going to paint one of them with

winter scenes.

Other stores were busy too. At Subway, a line of people extended from the counter, out the front door. On the Saturday during last yearÕ s garage sale Ñ with lower attendance than in 2013 Ñ the store had its busiest day ever.

Calling it a day late Saturday were Bill and Charlotte Jones of Glens Falls, walking towards their car to leave town after some successful shopping. Bill Jones was carrying two large vintage beer signs to hang on the outside of a shed at his camp in Raquette Lake, he said. Ò Three people have stopped me and offered to buy them off me,Ó he said.

Charlotte was hauling a bag full of items including collectible glass, clothing and an alarm clock. A purple stuffed monkey was peeking out of the top of her bag.

For three years, Charlotte has been battling with her Raquette Lake neighbor Clay Sheldon — he’s been sticking plastic pink flamingos in her lawn, and sheÕ s retaliated by hanging purple monkeys from the tree in his front yard, she said. Ò ItÕ s been a running joke,Ó she said, noting she was thrilled with finding the stuffed monkey for a low price.

Traffic snarls, tons of trash

Monday, Gary Ross reported that Saturday had been the busiest garage sale day in the townÕ s history. Ò They came in swarms,Ó she said, noting that the traffic was more congested than he had seen it during the 20 years that he and his crews have cleaned up after the sale. Ò It was just unbelievable,Ó he added.

Ross and his crew hauled away 45 dumptruck loads of refuse from the sale over the weekend. Saturday, Ross had to make several 7-mile detours so he could get back into town after taking trips to the landfill. He reported that to move 50 yards down Main Street midafternoon Saturday, it took at least 20 minutes. Ò You couldnÕ t go nowhere,Ó he said. Other sale visitors reported that it took three hours to drive 60 miles through thick traffic from Colonie to Warrensburg. Others said it took 90 minutes to go from Lake George to Warrensburg.

Sunday, it was a different story. The crowds were far thinner, as bargain-hunters were scared off by the forecast of storms. Some shoppers still moseyed through town, but most all left by noon when the rain intensified.

Monday, event organizer Lynn Smith agreed that Saturday was incredibly busy. She praised Ross and his crew for their thorough cleanup while she marvelled about how quiet the Queen Village now seemed. Ò Now, itÕ s like nothing happened,Ó she said.

been under consideration. The store was intended 18 months ago to host the Lickits Ice Cream enterprise.

Early this year, county supervisors shelved the idea due to a hefty purchase price of about $1.2 million, and set up a limited information center in the Adirondack Outlet Mall across Rte. 9.

That modest information center, however, has been so successful that the county leaders are now again giving serious consideration to moving the entire tourism staff to the Lickits Ice Cream building.

Lake Luzerne Supervisor and county Tourism Committee Chairman Gene Merlino said recently that the reconsideration was also based on a recent price reduction on the building Ñ to an affordable $700,000.

He said that county employees manning the temporary information center in the mall had passed out many thousands of tourism leaflets, over five months this summer — far more than had been passed out at the departmentÕ s present location in the county center over the last five years.

In the Lickits building, the entire tourism staff could counsel visitors about where to go and what to do in the county, he said, boosting prosperity for county residents.

Merlino said the purchase of the building could be bankrolled by a loan paid back over 10 to 15 years by county Occupancy Tax proceeds.

He also said that moving the tourism staff into a visitors center would boost the countyÕ s self-promotion, as they were brimming with enthusiasm and knowledge of the area. Ò ItÕ s an outstanding location, and we have knowledgeable staff that knows this county backwards and upside-down,Ó he said. Ò To have such a free-standing information center in the middle of the Million-Dollar Half-Mile is priceless.Ó The aim is not just to tout Warren CountyÕ s attractions. Relocating the tourism staff would also allow the county courts to expand into the Tourism DepartmentÕ s existing space in the county center, officials said. For years, the court system has been cramped and more space has been sought for its operations Ñ particularly the family court. Building an addition onto the municipal center would cost millions of dollars, an expense largely

Last week, top county officials toured the Lickits building and examined the premises to determine the renovations needed.

But the concept is not without its detractors.

Glens Falls Ward 3 Supervisor Bud Taylor blasted the concept at a Tourism Committee meeting this week.

He claimed that a full-fledged tourism information center was virtually useless, as travelers planned their trip in advance via the Internet. Ò This is not 1955,Ó he said. Ò Travelers donÕ t drive around looking for vacancy signs.Ó But Merlino countered that while all travelers might not be looking for an immediate destination, many would be enticed by a visit to the tourism information center to return and enjoy various local attractions and venues on a future trip. Merlino disputed TaylorÕ s assertions, noting how popular the existing temporary information kiosk.

Taylor continued, citing the cost of ongoing maintenance to the building as a burden to taxpayers, and that removing a valuable property from the tax roll would represent ongoing lost revenue.

Acknowledging the need of more court space, he said that the Board of Supervisors should give up some of its room at the Municipal Center, rather than the tourism department. Ò We are a space hog,Ó he said.

Queensbury at-large Supervisor Bill Mason agreed with Taylor, in opposition to the county acquiring more property and incurring additional debt. Merlino, however, countered that the debt would be paid off with bed tax receipts and not be a burden on local taxpayers.

Glens Falls Ward 5 Supervisor Bill Kenny, head of the countyÕ s Occupancy Tax Committee, spoke out in favor of the full-service tourism center in the busy strip of outlet malls. Ò We need a visitorÕ s center, and we need it on Rte. 9,Ó he said.

But Queensbury Supervisor Ron Montesi expressed a warning about tackling the proposal right away. He said that the Million Dollar Half Mile was becoming extremely congested with traffic Ñ and with two new malls expected to be built soon, the traffic backups would likely get far worse. One of the new malls is planned by developer Dave Kenny, and the other is to be at the site of the former Montcalm Restaurant. Ò WeÕ re now ruining a good shopping experience,Ó Montesi

Girl scores debut touchdown in youth football

thom@denpubs.com HUDSON FALLS Ñ Exhibiting a productive, freewheeling offense, the Warrensburg youth football team handily defeated its Hudson Falls competitors 52-20 in a game held Sunday Oct. 6 on the Tigers’ home field.

Burgher standout Jackson Corriveau ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the high scoring effort.

Hope Boland, whoÕ s been a solid player for the young Burghers for several seasons, scored her first career touchdown during the game.

In a play that thrilled the Burgher fans, Corriveau threw a 60-yard pass to Jessie Griffin for another touchdown — a rarity in youth football.

Griffin ran for 160 yards and four touchdowns, accomplishing two interceptions in his defensive play.

Hunter McKenna tallied 53 yards rushing and Hope Boland added 20 yards rushing and one touchdown, following a six-year tradition of girls making strong contributions to youth football play in Warrensburg.

Tommy Moore and Jaron Griffin caught passes to boost the score, two points each, from Burgher quarterback Reece Rundell.

Defense was led by Corriveau, Griffin, McKenna, Jaron Griffin, Jackson Czuba, Tommy Moore, Wyatt Baker and — all with double digit tackles. Zach Shambo had six tackles and a fumble recovery. Ò This was a great game for those who braved the rain,Ó Coach Baker said. Ò This was a great game.Ó Baker observed that his team, comprised of fifth and sixth graders, scored no less than 34 points in the first quarter. He said they initially thought they could substitute players and relax, but the Tigers fought back hard to bring the score to 34-20, forcing the Burghers to maintain their intensity. Ò The kids fought right until the end,Ó Baker said, adding that his proudest moment of the day was when Hope Boland took over as running back in the fourth quarter. Ò I told the boys that they needed to help their Ô little sisterÕ score a touchdown, and they responded with great blocking — four carries later, she scored her first touchdown in her career.Ó Baker said the teamÕ s accomplishments Oct. 6 meant a lot to him, the playersÕ parents and the Burgher fans. Ò We are a team in every sense of the word and we showed everyone that Warrensburg football is Ô loud and proudÕ and will be strong for a long time,Ó he said.

The teamÕ s next game is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Warrensburg Recreation field versus Ft. Edward. The 3rd and 4th grade squadÕ s game follows.
