Η ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΉ ΑΝΑΠΑΡΆΣΤΑΣΗ ΈΧΕΙ ΜΙΑ ΠΑΡΆΞΕΝΗ ΔΎΝΑΜΗ. Ενώ μνημονεύει τη σκέψη του δημιουργού της για τον κόσμο, δεν μεταφέρει την εικόνα του δια μνήμης, όπως η ζωγραφική. Στη φωτογραφία απαιτείται η φυσική παρουσία του δημιουργού της στον ίδιο δεδομένο χωροχρόνο της εικόνας. Ο φωτογράφος μοιράζεται και αποτυπώνει ένα «υπήρξα εκεί», από το οποίο εμείς βλέπουμε ένα μόνο τμήμα του. Το υπόλοιπο παραμένει εκτός κάδρου, όπως οι αντιλήψεις του θεατή και η διαμεσολάβηση του μέσου. Ως θεατές, καλούμαστε να διακρίνουμε την αυθεντικότητα του δικού μας βλέμματος, του βλέμματος του δημιουργού, της εικόνας που μας κοιτάζει. Στη σημερινή εποχή του πολλαπλασιασμού της εικόνας-οθόνης, στην εποχή της εικονικής πραγματικότητας και της αναπαραγωγής στερεοτύπων, ο μοναδικός μη φωτογραφημένος άνθρωπος και τόπος θα γίνουν ένα παγκόσμιο προστατευόμενο μνημείο· ένα σπάνιο και μυστηριώδες σημείο αναφοράς. Οι αναφορές της δουλειάς της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη εγείρουν και εμπλέκουν παράλληλα πολλά ζητήματα σημασίας. Το «υπήρξα εκεί» προϋποθέτει, κατ’ αρχάς, το ταξίδι. Θέτει το ζήτημα του ετέρου προσδιορισμού του μακρινού Άλλου με το δικό της βλέμμα, το δικό μας, με το βλέμμα της φωτογραφικής μηχανής. Τα πρώτα ταξίδια δεν είχαν τόσο ως στόχο τη συνάντηση με τον Άλλον όσο την κυριαρχία του. Από τότε μας χωρίζει μια απόσταση. Απόσταση από τους πρώτους ρομαντικούς φωτογράφους και ζωγράφους που μεγάλωσαν τον κόσμο και από το πρώτο ταξιδιωτικό περιοδικό, το Sur terre et sur mer, ή από το περιοδικό The National Geographic και το Geo, οι φωτογραφίες των οποίων όρισαν τα στερεότυπα της ταξιδιωτικής φωτογραφίας, έως τις διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις που εγγράφονται στην ιστορία των διαδρομών της φωτογραφικής εικόνας. Σήμερα δεν μιλάμε πλέον για ταξίδι ή για τον πρόσφατο μαζικό τουρισμό· σήμερα μιλάμε για την απόσταση από τον Άλλον, μιλάμε για τη βασική παράμετρο της φωτογραφίας, η οποία διατηρεί πάντα μια απόσταση από το αναπαριστάμενο, από το πλαίσιο του χώρου και του χρόνου, από τον μετέπειτα χρόνο θέασης.

Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη αρθρώνει και διερευνά την εικόνα σε πολλά επίπεδα. Πλησιάζει τον άλλον, μειώνει τις αποστάσεις, κινείται σ΄ ένα κοινωνικοπολιτικό πλαίσιο μ’ έμμεσο τρόπο, χωρίς θόρυβο. Έναν κόσμο οι διαφορές του οποίου θα έπρεπε να γεφυρωθούν. Μ’ ένα βλέμμα μακριά από τον χρόνο, το περιβάλλον και την ιδεολογία της αποικιοκρατίας. Στις φωτογραφικές εικόνες της, κατ’ αρχάς, διακρίνουμε μια οπτική ανθρωπολογική προσέγγιση. Βλέπουμε άνδρες, γυναίκες, ηλικιωμένους, νέους, παιδιά, διακρίνουμε τις διαστρώσεις του χρόνου και της ιστορίας στο αστικό και αγροτικό περιβάλλον σε διαφορετικές χώρες και κουλτούρες της Ανατολής.

Εκεί όπου η Δύση είχε αποικήσει ακόμη και την εικόνα τους, τώρα η εικαστικός παρατηρεί αθέατη τη δραστηριότητα, τις στιγμές της καθημερινότητας των ανθρώπων που ανατρέφονται, συναναστρέφονται, εργάζονται, ερωτεύονται, σ’ ειρηνική συνύπαρξη. Η προσέγγισή της αναδεικνύει και διερευνά, σιωπηλά, τις ταυτότητες, τα πλαίσια, τους τόπους. Μετατρέπει τους δρόμους σε στούντιο με φυσικό φωτισμό, όπου παρατηρεί προσεκτικά την ανθρώπινη έκφραση, τα αισθήματα που συνδέουν όλους τους πολιτισμούς με οικουμενικές αξίες. Οι φωτογραφίες της αυτονομούνται, περπατούν, αφηγούνται, μαζί της τον θαυμασμό για τη γυναικεία φύση, τη μητρότητα, τα παιδιά. Τραγουδούν έναν αισιόδοξο ύμνο για την ίδια τη ζωή. Όλες μαζί αναβλύζουν σεβασμό, τρυφερότητα και εμπιστοσύνη στον άνθρωπο. Κοινό χαρακτηριστικό που συνδέει τις διαδρομές της είναι η διαλεκτική του βλέμματος της δημιουργού γύρω από συναισθήματα που εντοπίζει στο βλέμμα των άλλων. Η ίδια κερδίζει την εμπιστοσύνη τους, μετατρέπεται από παρατηρητή σε παρατηρούμενη, ενώ εμείς βλέπουμε το βλέμμα τους και διακρίνουμε το δικό της οξύ, ευαίσθητο, αυθόρμητο βλέμμα που μετράει, ζυγίζει, προβάλλει το βλέμμα της στο βλέμμα των άλλων σε κάθε κίνηση, άγγιγμα, σκιά, υφή, πτυχή, υλικό τους. Η καλλιτέχνις αντικαθιστά τα στερεότυπα δίνοντάς μας την αίσθηση μιας βιωμένης πραγματικότητας, μιας άμεσης αίσθησης της παρουσίας του Άλλου. Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη δεν αφηγείται ένα γεγονός συγκεκριμένο, δεν τεκμηριώνει μια ιστορία δημόσια ή ιδιωτική, δεν αναφέρεται σε μεγάλα μνημεία ή γεγονότα, δεν τεκμηριώνει την εικόνα μιας χώρας. Η δική της προσέγγιση είναι μια αντι-αφήγηση. Είναι ελεύθερη. Κρατάει ίση απόσταση από το ευχάριστο ή το δυσάρεστο. Ενώ παράλληλα οι φωτογραφικές της εικόνες δομούνται με μια σχεδόν μουσική εσωτερική δομή, ανεξάρτητη, και την ίδια στιγμή συγκροτούν ένα ενιαίο σύνολο με τη ζωγραφική της. Αθήνα 2021

PHOTOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION POSSESSES A STRANGE POWER; even though it unveils its creator’s inner thoughts for the world, it does not convey the image through memory, as in painting. Photography requires the physical presence of its creator on the given space-time of the image.

The photographer shares and testifies some sort of “I have been there”, of which we see only a part; the rest of it remains outside the frame, much like the viewer’s perceptions and the medium’s intervention. As viewers, we are invited to discern the authenticity of our own glance, the glance of the creator, of the image itself looking towards us.

Nowadays, in an era dominated by images-screens, virtual reality and reproduction of stereotypes, the one and only human or spot that has not been yet photographed, will become a universal protected “monument”; a rare and mysterious point of reference.

The work themes chosen by Denny Theocharakis raise and involve at the same time many significant issues. The “I have been there” requires travelling, in the first place. It lays down the issue of defining the distant Other through her own eyes, our own eyes, the “eye” of the camera.

The objective of the early travels of humankind was not to encounter the Other, but rather to dominate him. Since then, we have come a long way. There were the early romantic photographers and painters, who widened the world’s horizons; then the first travelling magazine, Sur terre et sur mer, or the magazines National Geographic and Geo – whose photographs established the stereotypes of travelling photography up to the diverse approaches that are being recorded in the history of photographic image.

Today, we are not anymore referring to travelling or the recent mass tourism; nowadays, we talk about the “distance” from the Other. We talk about the basic element of photography, which is to keep always a distance from what is being represented, from the context of space and time and from the elapsing time until we view the images.

Denny Theocharakis, explores and articulates the image in multiple levels. She approaches the Other, diminishes distances, moves within a socio-political context in a silent way, without further ado. She moves around a world whose differences should be bridged. Her glance spreads beyond time, the environment and the ideology of colonization.

What we discern first and foremost in her photographic images is an anthropological approach. We see men, women, aged people, and children; we notice the layers of time and history upon the urban and rural environment in different countries and cultures of the East.

In places where the West had “colonized” even their image, the artist now watches unobserved the activities and daily moments of people who are being brought up, mingle, work and fall in love in peaceful co-existence.

Her approach silently brings into the foreground and investigates identities, contexts and places. She transforms the streets into photographic studios with natural light in which she monitors carefully the human expression and the feelings that connect all cultures with universal values.

Her photographs assume a life of their own; they walk and narrate along with her the admiration about female nature, motherhood, children. They chant an auspicious hymn of life itself. They emanate respect, tenderness and trust to the Human.

The undercurrent – common thread - connecting the artist’s journey is the receptiveness of her eye sight attuned to the emotions she detects in the glances of others.

She earns their trust; from an observer she becomes the observant, while we see their glance, we discern her own piercing (penetrating), sensitive, spontaneous eye that measures and weighs the figures; she projects her eyes onto those of others in every move, touch, shadow, texture, fold or material.

The artist replaces the stereotypes, giving us the sense of an experienced reality, of a direct sense of the presence of the Other.

Denny Theocharakis does not narrate a specific event, does not document a public or private story; neither refers to grand monuments or events nor provides testimonials about the overall image of a country.

Her own approach is a counter-narrative. She is free. She keeps her distance both from the pleasant and the unpleasant. At the same time, her photographic images are being constructed in an almost musical, independent manner, while simultaneously forming a comprehensive ensemble with her painting.

ΜΈΣΑ ΑΠΌ ΤΑ ΤΑΞΊΔΙΑ ΤΗΣ σε διάφορα μέρη του κόσμου, η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη αναπαριστά τις συγκινησιακές της εμπειρίες και αποτυπώνει στον φωτογραφικό φακό τις πολιτισμικά ενδιαφέρουσες περιηγήσεις της. Στην έκθεση η σιωπή της ματιάς, μας αφηγείται με έναν ξεχωριστό τρόπο, ιστορίες ανθρώπων που συνάντησε στα ταξίδια της σε χώρες της Ασίας, της Αφρικής, της Ευρώπης, της Αμερικής. Δεν υπάρχει ιστορία ή αφήγηση χωρίς ταξίδι. Τον ρόλο του διαμεσολαβητή ανάμεσα στα ταξίδια της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη και την φαντασία του θεατή αναλαμβάνουν οι φωτογραφικές εικόνες της. Η καλλιτέχνης ακινητοποιεί την πραγματικότητα, δίνοντας στον θεατή τη δυνατότητα να περιπλανηθεί σε νέους κόσμους αφήνοντας την φαντασία του ελεύθερη. Εμπνευσμένη από τα ταξίδια της, μας παρουσιάζει το φωτογραφικό της έργο παράλληλα με το ζωγραφικό, δημιουργώντας μια άρρηκτη ενότητα. Άλλωστε για την εξόχως δημιουργική φύση της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη, η ζωγραφική και η φωτογραφία αποτελούν έννοιες αλληλένδετες. Μιλά με τις εικόνες της αναστρέφοντας τον χρόνο και γράφει την αλήθεια της, με τις πινελιές της, γεφυρώνοντάς τον. Στη σιωπή της ματιάς ο Άνθρωπος γίνεται το επίκεντρο και θεάται με έναν ευαίσθητο και μαγικό τρόπο. Η κάμερα αποτελεί προέκταση του βλέμματος της δημιουργού. Η αγάπη για τη ζωή, ο πόνος, η μοναξιά, ο μόχθος, ο θυμός αποτυπώνονται ως θραύσματα της πραγματικότητας και καταγράφονται ως συνθέσεις φωτογραφικής πληρότητας με κοινό συνδετικό κρίκο, τις ‘ματιές’ ανθρώπων από όλο τον κόσμο. Από το 1839, χρονιά ανακάλυψης της φωτογραφίας, έως σήμερα το μέσο αυτό υπηρετεί την καταγραφή και την ερμηνεία του κόσμου με έναν απαράμιλλο τρόπο. Ο φωτογράφος μέσα από τον φωτογραφικό φακό κάνει τη δική του, μοναδική επιλογή εικόνων για να μας δώσει το προσωπικό του στίγμα, να μας περάσει το μήνυμα που επιθυμεί. «Δεν δημιουργεί μία φωτογραφία μόνο με τη μηχανή. Όταν φωτογραφίζει «κουβαλά» μαζί του όλες τις εικόνες που έχει δει, όλα τα βιβλία που έχει διαβάσει, τη μουσική που έχει ακούσει, τους ανθρώπους που έχει αγαπήσει» όπως χαρακτηριστικά έχει επισημάνει ο Αμερικανός φωτογράφος Ansel Adams. Οι φωτογραφικές επιλογές της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη αποτελούν δυναμικά εργαλεία διήγησης ηθογραφικών ιστοριών και λειτουργούν ως ένα χρονογράφημα, μια καταγραφή γεγονότων, επαναπροσδιορίζοντας τα δεδομένα των πολιτισμικών και κοινωνικών μας αντιλήψεων. Είναι μια φωτογράφος του «κόσμου». Η φωτογραφία της αποτελεί ένα ντοκουμέντο του κόσμου, αφού στρέφει την κάμερά της προς τους ανθρώπους, για να μοιραστεί μαζί μας κοινωνικές στιγμές, καθημερινές ασχολίες, στις οποίες γίνεται μάρτυρας και τις αιχμαλωτίζει, έτσι ώστε το καθημερινό να μην πέσει στην λήθη του, να μην ξεχαστεί. Στα ταξίδια της δεν παραμένει ένας απλός παρατηρητής, αλλά θέλει να γνωρίσει τους ανθρώπους, να συνδιαλλαγεί μαζί τους, να συναισθανθεί το περιβάλλον τους. Συναντά 13

ανθρώπους που ενώ ζουν σε διάφορες χώρες, με διαφορετικές κουλτούρες, έχουν κοινές συνήθειες, παρόμοιες εμπειρίες ζωής και βιώματα. Γίνεται κομμάτι της καθημερινότητας των ηρώων της, ένας περαστικός από τη ζωή τους, που τελικά, χωρίς κάποιες φορές να το ξέρουν, έχουν αποτυπωθεί στον φακό και την ψυχή της. Παρατηρώντας τη σειρά φωτογραφιών, στη σιωπή της ματιάς, αντιλαμβανόμαστε ότι η φωτογραφία της δεν παραμένει στην αποτύπωση της στιγμής. Ο φωτογραφικός φακός της αποκτά ζωή και κίνηση. Μέσα από μια γρήγορη ματιά ή από κάποιο απλό νεύμα, η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη αιχμαλωτίζει ανθρώπινες στιγμές, ζωές γεμάτες εμπειρίες. Η ευαίσθητη ματιά της φωτογράφου μάς περνάει μηνύματα, μας αφήνει να ταξιδέψουμε και εμείς μέσα στις ψυχές αυτών των ανθρώπων και να φανταστούμε τις δικές τους ιστορίες. Αφήνοντας την «αυλή» του σπιτιού της (το comfort zone της) η καλλιτέχνης, ταξιδεύει μακριά, σε άγνωστα μέρη κάτω από δύσκολες συνθήκες, ανακαλύπτει νέους πολιτισμούς που την εμπνέουν και μας ανοίγει διάπλατα τον κόσμο μέσα από την σιωπηρή και εύστοχη ματιά της. Μας καθιστά κοινωνούς μιας κριτικής θέασης απέναντι στις ανθρώπινες εικόνες που αποτυπώνει. Τί πιο όμορφο από το να μπορεί κανείς να μπει έστω και για λίγο μέσα στη καθημερινότητα άλλων πολιτισμών, να γνωρίσει ανθρώπους που γεννήθηκαν και μεγάλωσαν σε διαφορετικές συνθήκες; Να μιλήσει μαζί τους, να μπει στα σπίτια τους, να γευτεί το φαγητό τους, να απαθανατίσει τον ύπνο ενός μωρού τσιγγάνων; Αλλά ακόμα και ένα απλό βλέμμα, μπορεί να μιλάει από μόνο του. Ματιές τρομαγμένες, ματιές άγριες έτοιμες να σε «χτυπήσουν», ματιές που σε συγκινούν, σε ανατριχιάζουν. Στιγμές που δεν τις ξεχνάς ποτέ στη ζωή σου. Σήμερα, παρά την ύπαρξη πληθώρας μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης όπου η φωτογραφία παίζει ουσιαστικό ρόλο, η τέχνη της φωτογραφίας έχει γίνει πιο απαιτητική. Ο φωτογραφικός καταιγισμός, μέσω της τεχνολογίας, επιτρέπει στον καθένα από εμάς να τραβήξει μία φωτογραφία, χωρίς απαραίτητα μία τεκμηριωμένη φωτογραφική αντίληψη. Αντίθετα, η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη συνειδητά καταγράφει συμβάντα με μια απίστευτη περιέργεια, ταχύτητα και στιγμιαία αντίδραση. Συναντά το βλέμμα των ανθρώπων που ελκύουν την προσοχή της και βρίσκεται σε ετοιμότητα με τα μάτια και την καρδιά της. Στην «τέχνη της φωτογραφίας δρόμου» (street art photography), την οποία εκπροσωπεί επάξια η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη, σημαντικό ρόλο παίζει ο καλλιτέχνης να ανακαλύψει το θέμα του και να μας το αποκαλύψει μέσα σε κλάσματα δευτερολέπτου. Το ιδιαίτερο χαρακτηριστικό της τέχνης της «φωτογραφίας δρόμου» είναι το γεγονός ότι κανείς άλλος δεν θα μπορέσει να τραβήξει το ίδιο ντοκουμέντο. Σε αυτό το είδος φωτογραφίας απαιτείται υπομονή, αλλά και εγρήγορση, προκειμένου να καταφέρεις να απαθανατίσεις «αυτό που είδες», «να είσαι παρών τη σωστή στιγμή» και να μπορέσεις γρήγορα «να υπερκεράσεις τον φόβο των άλλων ώστε να αποδεχτούν την πρόκληση του φακού σου». Η καλλιτέχνης καταφέρνει αστραπιαία και αριστοτεχνικά να «κλέψει» ανθρώπινες στιγμές, να βρεθεί εκεί όπου δεν θα περίμενε κανείς να είναι. Γίνεται αυτόπτης μάρτυρας επεισοδίων ζωής. Δίνει διάρκεια στο εφήμερο «παγώνοντάς» το. Τη δημιουργό ενδιαφέρουν οι μη στημένες πόζες, οι αυθόρμητες φωτογραφίες. Με υπομονή, παλεύει να αιχμαλωτίσει τον αυθορμητισμό αλλά και το φευγαλέο της στιγμής και το καταφέρνει επάξια. Σε ένα άγνωστο περιβάλλον, κάποιες φορές γίνεται γρήγορα αποδεκτή, ενώ άλλες φορές εισπράττει άρνηση και φόβο. Αν και αποκαλύπτει έντονα συναισθήματα, η φωτογραφία της δεν αποπνέει επιθετικότητα, αλλά αναδεικνύει την τρυφερή ματιά της για τους συνανθρώπους της.

Μέσα από τα ανθρώπινα πορτραίτα της, η καλλιτέχνης μας ευαισθητοποιεί απέναντι στις κοινωνικές συνθήκες διαβίωσης αυτών των ανθρώπων, αλλά και των ευρύτερων κοινωνικών δομών τους. Στις εικόνες που προβάλλονται αναδεικνύεται με φυσικότητα η πρωτογενής εμπειρία. Τα φόντα της διευρύνουν την ατμόσφαιρα και το περιβάλλον του εικονιζόμενου, χωρίς να διασπούν την προσοχή μας. Η δημιουργός καταφέρνει να συνδέσει ανθρώπους διαφορετικών θρησκειών, πεποιθήσεων, κοινωνικών τάξεων, ηλικιών. Το αθώο βλέμμα ενός παιδιού, ακολουθεί η εικόνα ενός τρελού που κραυγάζει. Ο πράος μοναχός από το Λάος «στέκεται» δίπλα στον γραφικό Υδραίο. Ο άνδρας από τη Νότιο Αφρική προτάσσει το χέρι του παίρνοντας την ίδια στάση με τη ζωγραφιά του Μαντέλα στο φόντο. Η μειλίχια γυναικεία φιγούρα «συνομιλεί» με έναν όλμο 155 mm από τον πόλεμο του Βιετνάμ. Μόνος απόλυτος κυρίαρχος ο άνθρωπος και η ζωή του. Σε μια εποχή όπου τα φωτογραφικά μέσα επιτρέπουν κάθε τύπου παρέμβαση, η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη χρησιμοποιεί την ψηφιακή της κάμερα ως αναλογική, αφού η ίδια δεν επιθυμεί να επεξεργάζεται ψηφιακά τις φωτογραφίες της. Το γεγονός αυτό, οξύνει ακόμη περισσότερο το βλέμμα της, προσδίδοντάς του μία απαράμιλλη αποφασιστικότητα. Έχει όλες τις κεραίες της ανοιχτές απέναντι στο γεγονός που καταγράφει και, ταυτόχρονα, δεν έχει παθητικό βλέμμα περιμένοντας την διαδικασία της επεξεργασίας. Δεν χειραγωγεί την πραγματικότητα ούτε και το φωτογραφικό αποτέλεσμα. Ο αυθορμητισμός και η ταχύτητα της στιγμής, δεν εμποδίζουν την δημιουργό να αποτυπώσει ένα ολοκληρωμένο αποτέλεσμα, ώστε, τελικά η σύνθεση και το συναίσθημα να συνυπάρχουν δημιουργικά στις διαδρομές της. Όμως, ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον έχει και το φωτογραφικό μάτι της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη όταν χρησιμοποιεί την αναλογική της κάμερα. Οι ασπρόμαυρες φωτογραφίες της εκπέμπουν δραματικότητα, αμεσότητα, σε γυρίζουν πίσω στον χρόνο. Νοιώθεις ότι βρίσκεσαι εκεί να βοηθήσεις, να αγκαλιάσεις, να μοιραστείς. Σου θυμίζουν την ατμόσφαιρα παλαιών φωτογραφιών. Κάθε άλλο παρά τη «σιωπή της ματιάς» δεν αισθανόμαστε αντικρίζοντας τη δουλειά της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη. Αντίθετα, οι ματιές των πρωταγωνιστών της φλέγονται, μας μιλούν, μας φωνάζουν. Μας αιχμαλωτίζουν και την ίδια στιγμή μας δημιουργούν μία παράξενη αίσθηση ελευθερίας. Μας συναρπάζουν, μας συγκινούν, μας εκπλήσσουν, μας αιφνιδιάζουν. Απόμακρες και οικείες ταυτόχρονα, γίνονται άλλοτε κριτές, άλλοτε καθρέφτες και εισβάλλουν σαν θύελλα στην ψυχή μας εξευγενίζοντάς την. Αίρουν τον χρόνο, αναστατώνουν τις σκέψεις μας σμιλεύοντας την αλήθεια της ζωής με τη δική τους πραγματικότητα. Η φωτογράφος μεταμορφώνεται σε έναν σύγχρονο διαπολιτισμικό περιπατητή (flâneuse), ένα δημιουργικό κανάλι αλληλοεπίδρασης ανάμεσα σε εμάς και τον κόσμο. Μας προσκαλεί μέσα από τη φωτογραφία της να γεφυρώσουμε διαφορετικές εικόνες του κόσμου και να τις δούμε στην ολότητά τους. Μέσα από την διερευνητική και ακούραστη ματιά της, φέρνει στο φως πτυχές της ζωής οι οποίες θα λειτουργήσουν ως μοντέλα για την ζωγραφική της. Αν στις απαρχές της φωτογραφίας, οι ζωγράφοι φοβήθηκαν πως θα μείνουν χωρίς δουλειά, το έργο της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη μας αποδεικνύει έμπρακτα, ότι η ζωγραφική και η φωτογραφία όχι μόνο μπορούν να συνυπάρχουν, αλλά το ένα ενδυναμώνει το άλλο, δημιουργώντας μια διαχρονική πανανθρώπινη γλώσσα. Στο πεδίο της εικαστικής δημιουργίας, η ζωγραφική και η φωτογραφία διαπραγματεύονται και θεμελιώνουν μια σχέση δράσης-αντίδρασης, ενώ εξισορροπούν αντίρροπες θεωρήσεις. THROUGH HER TRAVELS IN VARIOUS PLACES AROUND THE WORLD, Denny Theocharakis depicts her emotional experiences and captures with the lens her culturally intriguing perambulations. In the exhibition the silence of the glance she recounts to us in a unique fashion stories of people she encountered while travelling in countries across Asia, Africa, Europe and America.

There is neither story nor narration without a journey. Photographic images assume the role of mediator between the travels of Denny Theocharakis and the viewer’s imagination.

The creator ‘freezes’ reality, offering viewers the possibility to wander into new worlds, and letting their imagination run free.

Inspired by her travels, she introduces us to her photographs along with her paintings, thus, forming a solid unit. After all, as far as Denny Theocharakis’s particularlly creative nature is concerned, painting and photography are interconnected concepts. She converses with her images and writes down her own truth through her brushstrokes by reversing and condensing time, respectively.

The focal point of the silence of the glance is the Human Being, and is viewed in a sensitive and magical way. The camera is an extension of the artist’s glance. Love for life, pain, loneliness, toil and anger are being presented like fragments of reality and recorded like compositions of photographic integrity, connected by the eyes of people from around the world.

Since 1839, the year photography was invented, until today, this medium serves as the recording and interpretation of the world in an incomparable manner. Through the photographic lens, photographers make their own unique choice of images in order to give us their personal mark and convey their intended message. As the American photographer Ansel Adams has characteristically noted “You don’t make a photograph only with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”

The photographic choices made by Denny Theocharakis constitute dynamic narration tools of daily-life stories which customs, and function like a chronicle, a record of events redefining our cultural and social perceptions. She is a photographer of the world. Her photography is a document of the universe, for she steers her camera towards people in order to share with us moments of social content and daily activities in which she becomes witness to, and illustrates them in a way so that the ordinary shall not be lost into oblivion and be forgotten.

In her travels, Denny does not remain a mere observer; she means to get to know people, to converse with them, to somewhat sense their environment. She encounters people who live in different countries, in different cultures, who, yet, share common habits, similar lives and experiences. She becomes part of her heroes’ daily routine, someone who 16

passes by their life, and they, sometimes without even knowing, leave their mark both on the lens and on her soul.

While observing the series of photographs in the silence of the glance, we realize that her photography does not limit itself in capturing the moment. Her photographic lens assumes life and motion. Through a glance or some simple nod, Denny Theocharakis captures human moments, lives enriched with experiences. The photographer’s sensitive eye conveys messages, allows us also to travel into the souls of these people and imagine their stories.

The artist, relinquishing her comfort zone, journeys far and wide to unfamiliar places, under adverse circumstances; she discovers new cultures that inspire her, and through her silent and insightful glance, she widens the world on our behalf.

She involves us into a critical viewing vis-à-vis of the human images she depicts. Is there anything more wondrous than to be able to enter, even for a little while, into the routine of other cultures, to meet people who were born and raised under different circumstances?

To talk with them, to be invited into their dwellings, to savour their food, to immortalize a Gypsy infant, for instance? However, even a simple glance may speak for itself. Eyes that are terrified, raged, ready to ‘punch’ you; eyes that move you or give you the chills. These are moments never to be forgotten.

Today, despite the existence of numerous social media in which photography plays essential role, the art of photography has become even more demanding. Through technology, the spate of photographic images enables everyone to take a snap, who do not necessarily possess a well-grounded photographic perception. On the contrary, Denny Theocharakis’s documentation of events takes place in full conscience and with an incredible curiosity, speed and instant reaction. She meets the glance of those who attract her attention, and she remains watchful both through her eyes and heart.

In the “street art photography”, represented deservedly by Denny Theocharakis, the artist’s important role is to discover their theme and unveil it to us within fractions of a second. One of the singular characteristics of the art of “street photography” is the fact that nobody else may take a snapshot of the same instant. This genre of photography requires patience as well as vigilance in order to immortalize “what you saw,” “to be present on the right moment” and to be able to swiftly “overcome the fear of others to accept the challenging presence of your lens.” The achievement of our artist here is that she “steals” speedily and masterfully human moments; she is where nobody would have expected her to be. She becomes an eye-witness of life’s incidents. She adds duration to what is evanescent by “freezing” it.

She is not interested in unnatural poses, but rather on spontaneous images. She strives patiently to encapsulate the impulsiveness and the fleeting nature of the moment, and she does it successfully. Amidst an unfamiliar environment, sometimes she becomes readily 17

accepted, whereas some other times she is received with rejection and fear. Although her images reveal intense emotions, her photography does not exude aggression, rather it brings into the foreground her tender look for the fellow human beings.

Through her human portraits, the artist raises our awareness with regard to the living conditions of these people, as well as to the wider social structures. The presented images highlight in a natural manner the primordial human experience. Her backdrops widen the ambiance and the surroundings of the person depicted, without, however, distracting our attention. The artist is able to connect people of different religions, beliefs, social classes, and ages. The innocent look of a child is followed by the image of a hollering mad person; the mild-tempered monk from Laos “stands next to” the colorful man from the Greek island of Hydra; the man from South Africa raises his arm high, assuming the same posture with Mandela who is depicted in the background; the suave figure of a woman “converses” with a 155mm mortar in Vietnam. The sole and absolute masters here are the human race and the lives of people.

In an era in which photographic media allow for all sorts of intervention, Denny Theocharakis uses her digital camera as if it were analog, for she does not wish to have her photographs digitally processed. This very fact makes her eye even sharper, endowing it with an unrivalled decisiveness. All of her senses are focused towards the instant she records and, at the same time, her eyes do not stand idly depending on the stage of photo processing. She does not manipulate either reality or the photographic end result. The impulsiveness and the speed of the moment do not prevent the artist from depicting a comprehensive outcome so that, in the end, composition and emotion may co-exist creatively in her journey.

Still, when Denny Theocharakis uses her analog camera, her eye as a photographer is of particular interest. Her black-and-white photos emanate a sense of drama and directness; they travel you back in time. You sense you are there to help, embrace, share. They remind you of old-time photographs.

Looking upon the work by Denny Theocharakis we sense anything but the silence of the glance. On the contrary, the eyes her protagonists’ are ablaze, they speak to us, they shout to us. They transfix us and at the same time they provoke a weird sense of freedom. We are enthralled, moved, startled and ambushed by them. Distant and familiar at the same time, sometimes they become judges and sometimes mirrors, and invade tempestuously into our soul, purifying it. They dispense with time, disturbing our thoughts by shaping the truth of life through their own reality.

The photographer is transformed into a contemporary intercultural wanderer (flâneuse), into a creative channel of interaction between ourselves and the world. By means of her photography, she invites us to bridge diverse images of the world and to see them in their entirety. Through her inquisitive and restless eyes, she brings into light aspects of life that eventually will serve as models for her painting.

If with the advent of photography painters once feared that they would be jobless, the work

by Denny Theocharakis professes that painting and photography not only can co-exist but also that the one can enhance the other, forging a timeless, universal language. In the field of representational creation, painting and photography negotiate and establish a relationship of action-reaction, while at the same time they level out counterbalancing perspectives. Perhaps that is what Man Ray had in mind when he said: “I photograph what I do not wish to paint and I paint what I do not wish to photograph.”

βιογραφικό Η ΝΤΕΝΗ ΘΕΟΧΑΡΑΚΗ λατρεύει να ταξιδεύει ανά τον κόσμο και να απαθανατίζει με την φωτογραφική της μηχανή εικόνες καθημερινής ζωής. Παρόλο που κάθε χώρα έχει τα δικά της ήθη και έθιμα, στις διαδρομές της δεν σταματά να εκπλήσσεται από τις ομοιότητες που διατρέχουν τις φαινομενικά διαφορετικές κουλτούρες των λαών. Οι ταξιδιωτικές της εμπειρίες μετασχηματίζονται σε τέχνη. Μέσα από τα ποικίλα ερεθίσματα και συναισθήματα που βιώνει παρατηρώντας διαφορετικές πτυχές της παγκόσμιας καθημερινότητας, πλάθει στα έργα της μία νέα πραγματικότητα, φαινομενικά πολύπλοκη, δαιδαλώδη. Μία πραγματικότητα η οποία όπως και στην πραγματική ζωή είναι γεμάτη ξέχωρα μονοπάτια που οδηγούν σε διαφορετικούς προορισμούς. Η καλλιτεχνική της δημιουργία διαφοροποιείται, αρνούμενη να ταυτιστεί με συγκεκριμένα ρεύματα ή τεχνοτροπίες. Η γραφή της είναι ασυμβίβαστη και περιπετειώδης, και αναζητεί διαρκώς νέους τρόπους έκφρασης με διαφορετικά υλικά, υφές και τεχνικές. Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη έχει παρουσιάσει τα έργα της τόσο σε ατομικές αλλά και σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Ένα έργο της έχει επιλεγεί να αποτελεί μέρος της μόνιμης συλλογής της Εθνικής Πινακοθήκης της Ελλάδος. Είναι κάτοχος ΜΒΑ από το NΥU Stern Business School, απόφοιτος του τμήματος Οικονομικών Σπουδών του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών και απόφοιτος της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας.

biography DENNY THEOCHARAKIS loves traveling around the world and using her camera to capture moments of everyday life at her destinations. Even though each country has its own culture and way of living, she never ceases to be amazed by how similar at their core these seemingly foreign and distant cultures are.

Her travel experiences form the basis of her artwork. Using the memories and feelings from her observations of the different aspects of daily life in the world she creates in her artwork a new, seemingly complicated, reality. A reality, that like in real life, is full of different distinct paths leading to different destinations.

Her art creations are constantly changing, evolving, as she refuses to be associated with a particular school of thought or style. Her style is uncompromising, adventurous. She is in constant search for new ways to express herself using different materials, textures, techniques.

Denny Theocharakis has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. One of her paintings belongs to the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Greece.

She holds an MBA from NYU Stern Business School, a BA in Economics from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and she is a graduate of Athens School of Fine Arts.
