Υπάρχει ένας άλλος κόσμος κλεισμένος μέσα σε ετούτον εδώ, τον δικό μας της Μαριλένας Ζ. Κασιμάτη «…Η γραμμή που χαράζεις ακολουθεί το συναίσθημα. Αρχικά είναι κάτι το απαλό, κάτι το ονειρικό, που μετατρέπεται προοδευτικά σε κάτι σκληρό, ξηρό, μοναχικό, κάτι που τελειώνει, κάτι που αρχίζει».

Τα Σχέδια Στην προηγούμενη έκθεση macro-micro-cosmos, η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη, με όχημα την αδρή γραφή της και σχεδιάζοντας διαρκώς σε μακριά ρολά, με μελάνια και χαρτιά που έφερνε από τα ταξίδια της στην Άπω Ανατολή, διατύπωσε με επιτυχία μια ενδιαφέρουσα, νέα, απόλυτα διακριτή, δική της γλώσσα. Η δομή των σχημάτων, οι κατακόρυφοι όγκοι που αναπτύσσονται ως φανταστικοί γεωλογικοί σχηματισμοί με πλήθος μικρογραφικών στοιχείων, που μετεωρίζονται στο κενό, οι αρχετυπικές μορφές κατοικιών που εδράζονται πάνω σε μακρινούς –θαρρείς– πλανήτες, αποτελούν την επιτομή της ιδιαίτερης, προσωπικής της γλώσσας, του δικού της ατομικού ιδιώματος, σαν περιγραφές ενός αλλόκοτου –σχεδιασμένου πάντως με τη σαφήνεια του υπαρκτού– κόσμου, σε παράλληλη αναλογία με τον αισθητικό διαλογισμό της Ανατολής. Σαν μια άσκηση αναχωρητισμού. Στη μετα-μεταμοντέρνα εποχή μας, μέσα στην απεχθή ρευστότητα της «δημιουργικής ασάφειας», η διατύπωση μιας έντονα εξατομικευμένης εικαστικής γλώσσας δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολη υπόθεση για να γίνει η μετάβαση πειστική. Απαιτεί απομόνωση, συγκρότηση και έντονη αυτοπεποίθηση για να ερμηνευθεί το νέο επίτευγμα με έναν πρόσφορο τρόπο, να καταστεί «φυσικό» και εν-διαφέρον μέσα στον εικαστικό χώρο. Εκτιμούμε ιδιαίτερα την επιλογή της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη να ασχοληθεί όχι μόνο με το παραμελημένο είδος του σχεδίου, αλλά να διαπρέψει σε αυτό και να δημιουργήσει την έκπληξη με μια ασυνήθιστη πυκνότητα γραφής που κατατέθηκε με υπομονή και προσήλωση, αναλαμβάνοντας επιπλέον την ευθύνη να μας εισαγάγει θεματικά στην περίπλοκη τροχιά που απαιτεί η συνεκτική ανάγνωση του υλικού. Δύσκολη επιλογή, με απαιτήσεις, πολύ περισσότερο αν συνεκτιμηθεί η αποφυγή της πολύ πιο προσιτής αναφοράς στην απεικόνιση της ανθρώπινης μορφής και όχι η θεματική της ονειρικής σκηνοθεσίας, με δράστες πυργοειδείς βράχους, μετέωρους σε ένα αγωνιώδες σύμπαν, με κυρίαρχο το αίσθημα του horror vacui. Απαιτεί χρόνο η διερεύνηση της πυκνής γραφής όπου το μικροσκοπικό σταθμίζεται με το μακροσκοπικό, το ορθολογικά δομημένο κτίσμα με την αναίρεσή του που σε μια νέα φάση επανέρχεται στον χώρο του ορθολογικού και αποκτά θεμέλια, αγκιστρωμένα πάντα στον αέρα (Take your Time, αγαπητοί φιλότεχνοι!). Δεν φαίνεται να προκύπτουν λάθη κατά τον σχεδιασμό, και αν πάλι προκύψουν, θα ενσωματωθούν με το γραμμικά ορθό, η πορεία πρέπει να είναι αδιάλειπτη, η παρακολούθησή της συχνά τυραννική αλλά και παρηγορητική, γιατί η ζωγράφος θέλει η προσπάθεια εντέλει να ανταμείβεται. Αν η φυγή είναι δυσχερέστερη σε ετούτον τον Κόσμο από την παραμονή, ο βίος γίνεται αβίωτος.

Δύσκολος αν και η απόφαση για αναχωρητισμό στους νέους αυτούς τόπους οδηγεί σε εφιαλτικότερους τρόπους ζωής. Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη μάς δίνει όμως το χέρι για να περιπλανηθούμε μαζί της σε έναν μοναχικό κόσμο, σε έναν κόσμο που έπλασε με απέραντη υπομονή, θέληση, κατανόηση, καταθέτοντας –όχι πάντα φανερά– τις δικές της δύσκολες αλλά πάντως λυτρωτικές προτάσεις. Η οπτική απόλαυση εννοείται ότι θα μας αποζημιώσει. Στο χέρι μας είναι να την ακολουθήσουμε.

Το Τρέξιμο - Το Βουνό - Το Δέντρο Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη λατρεύει το τρέξιμο στα βουνά. Ένα σημαντικό κομμάτι στη ζωή της ζωγράφου ξεκινά όταν βγάζει τις γόβες για να τις αλλάξει με αθλητικά παπούτσια και αρχίζει να τρέχει με επιδόσεις αθλήτριας στα βουνά. Από το τρέξιμο μέσα στην αδόμητη φύση αντλεί εικόνες και σκέψεις, όπου η ταχύδρομη οπτική συγκίνηση μετατρέπεται από σωματική άσκηση σε διαλογική, ψυχικά απελευθερωτική δημιουργία για την τέχνη της. Είναι το τρέξιμο, όχι η διερευνητική στατική ματιά μπροστά από ένα στημένο καβαλέτο, κάπου μέσα στη φύση με τα πινέλα στο χέρι και τα χρώματα στο βαλιτσάκι, όπως γινόταν παλιά, που την κάνει να βλέπει τα βουνά, τα δέντρα, σαν αρχετυπικά σύμβολα: «Το Κοσμικό Δέντρο είναι η λατρευτική έννοια που ταυτίζει το Ιερό Δέντρο με τον Κόσμο. Γιγάντιο σε μέγεθος, έχει τις ρίζες του βυθισμένες έως την καρδιά της γης, ενώ η κορυφή του αγγίζει τον ουρανό. Είναι ο άξονας του Κόσμου (axis mundi). Είναι σύμβολο Ζωής, σύμβολο του Κόσμου, συνδέεται τόσο με το Δέντρο της Ζωής όσο και με το αμαρτωλό Δέντρο της Γνώσης». Γνωστά αυτά και μάλλον τετριμμένες οι σημειώσεις που αντλούνται από τη βιβλιογραφία. Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη κρατά όμως και γραπτές σημειώσεις των ταχύδρομων συμβάντων, τις οποίες και καταθέτει ως βάση αρκετών έργων της, πυκνογραμμένες αράδες με μελάνι ιαπωνικό ως αφετηρία για την αποτύπωση των ουσιωδών που γεννιούνται με την κίνηση. Εικόνες ακατάστατες στην αρχή, αργότερα ισορροπημένες μεταφορές και μετωνυμίες του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος που την έθελξε. Εικόνες που δεν είναι τυχαίες «αρπαγές» του βλέμματος. Περισσότερο από άλλες, ανάγονται σε έναν φανερό ή έστω κρυφό διάλογο με την αισθητική σκέψη της Άπω Ανατολής, όπως έχουμε μάθει να την αποκαλούμε συνοπτικά. «Ναι, το Δέντρο και το Βουνό μπορεί να σου δίνουν δύναμη να προχωρήσεις, να γίνονται μοναχικές ανθρώπινες μορφές (το Δέντρο). Να το δεις ως άνθρωπο που εμπεριέχει πολλές από τις ιδιότητές του. Να το δεις ως φιλικό, να το δεις με την καταστροφική δύναμη της ρίζας που κάνει πολιτισμούς να καταστρέφονται. Όπως ακριβώς ο άνθρωπος: θα δώσει καρπούς και δύναμη; Θα δημιουργήσει; Θα καταστρέψει; Τα πάντα θα κάνει», είναι τα λόγια που ερμηνεύουν ως ένα βαθμό τις επιλογές της Ντένης Θεοχαράκη. Διόλου αντιφατικά ή δυσνόητα λόγια. Δυνατό το εύρημα του ανθρωπομορφικού, ακλόνητα δομημένου δέντρου στο ντελικάτο έργο της ζωγράφου και σχεδιάστριας με τα παστόζικα μονοχρωματικά του ακρυλικά. Ωστόσο το εύρημα δεν επιδρά πάντα ευεργετικά στην ανάγνωση, καθώς, πίσω του κρύβει μάλλον παρά αποκαλύπτει κάποιους καλά κρυμμένους κόσμους προς διερεύνηση. Με τα νέα της υλικά, κυρίως το χρώμα, τοποθετείται σε έναν νέο ενδιαφέροντα άξονα για την εξίσου με το σχέδιο παραμελημένη τοπιογραφία στην εποχή μας, με διατυπώσεις γεμάτες κίνηση, ενέργεια, έμπνευση και ανησυχία. Έτσι όπως η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη ξαναχρησιμοποίησε για το δικό της εικαστικό ταξίδι παλιά χαρτιά για συναρμολόγηση εξαρτημάτων αυτοκινήτων που βρήκε στο λεηλατημένο εργοστάσιο του Βόλου (blueprints), με τη νέα της δουλειά και με τους δικούς της διακριτούς κώδικες, συνθέτει νέους κόσμους, έχοντας κατά νου ότι πρόκειται πάντα για τον δικό μας, ετούτο εδώ, τον κάτω κόσμο.

The Drawings In her previous exhibition macro-micro-cosmos, Denny Theocharakis, by means of her clean-cut script and by drawing incessantly with ink on long rolls of papers which she brought along from her travels in the Far East, successfully articulated an interesting, fresh, absolutely distinct personal language. The structure of shapes, the vertical volumes developing like imaginary geological formations with numerous micro-elements hovering in the void, the archetypal figures of houses nesting on remote, one might say, planets, epitomise her particular, personal language, her own individual style, akin to an account of a bizarre world, drawn though with the clarity of an existing one and in parallel proportion with the aesthetic meditation of the East.

It resembles an exercise of retreatism.

In our meta-modern era, amidst the invidious fluidity of “creative obscurity”, it is no easy task at all to articulate an intense individualised visual idiom in a manner so as to render the transition convincing. It requires isolation, focus and profound self-confidence in order for the new achievement to be expediently interpreted, to become “natural” and en-thralling within the visual frame. We appreciate in particular Denny Theocharakis’s choice not only to busy herself with the neglected genre of drawing but also to excel in it and to surprise with an unusual density of script that has been deposited with patience and dedication, while she also assumes the responsibility to thematically introduce us into the complex course required by the cohesive reading of the material: a tough, demanding choice, all the more so if it is taken into account that the much more approachable depiction of human figure is avoided for the sake of the theme of a dreamy scenery in which the actors are towering rocks, hanging in an agonising universe where the horror vacui is the predominant feeling. It requires time to examine the painter’s dense script, whereby the microscopic is weighed against the macroscopic; the rationally structured construction against its annulment that in a new phase is reinstated in the sphere of the rational and develops foundations, always hooked up in the air. (Take your Time, fellow art lovers!)

During the process of drawing there seem to be no errors and, if there are, they are to be incorporated into what’s linearly right; the course has to be unfailing, it has to be constantly watched, often tyrannically but also soothingly, for the painter’s wish is to make it worth our while. If in this World fleeing is harder than staying, life becomes hard to bear. Hard as it may be, still,

the decision to retreat to these new places leads to more nightmarish ways of life. However, Denny Theocharakis takes us by the hand in order to wander around in a lonely world, in a world she created with infinite patience, will and understanding, by testifying –not always openly– her own tough, but still redeeming, suggestions. It goes without saying that the delightful sight will reward us. It is up to us to follow it.

The Running - The Mountain - The Tree Denny Theocharakis loves running in the mountains. A very important part in the painter’s life starts when she takes off her pumps, trades them for sneakers and sets about running upon the mountains much like a performing athlete. While running amidst the unstructured nature, she draws upon images and thoughts, whereby the fast-track visual emotion is transfigured from physical exercise to a meditating, mentally liberating creation for the sake of her art. What makes her see the mountains and trees as archetypal symbols is the act of running, not the probing, static gaze in front of an easel set up somewhere in nature, brushes in hand and paints inside the painter’s case, as it used to be done in the old days: “The Cosmic Tree is the cult concept identifying the Holy Tree with the Cosmos. Gigantic in size, its roots are buried deep into the heart of the earth, while its top reaches for the sky. It is the axis of the world (axis mundi). It is the symbol of Life, the symbol of Cosmos, associated both with the Tree of Life and with the sinful Tree of Knowledge.” All this is well-known and rather well-worn bibliographical information.

Still, Denny Theocharakis also takes down notes of the fast-track events which she lays out as the basis for several of her works; densely written lines in Japanese ink as a starting point of illustrating what’s essential emerging from movement. Erratic images in the beginning, balanced metaphors and metonymies of the natural environment that charmed her, later on. Images not haphazardly “seized” by the eye. They are, more than others, attributed to an evident, or at least clandestine, discourse with the aesthetic thought of the Far East, as we are taught to call it succinctly.

“Indeed, the Tree and the Mountain may give you strength to move on, it (the Tree) may become a lonely human figure. You may look at it as a human being encompassing many of its properties. You may look at it as something friendly. You may look at it through the destructive might of the rooting leading civilisations to disaster. Precisely like a man: Will it bear fruits? Will it create? Will it destroy? It’ll do everything.” These are her own very words, not at all contradicting or obscure, interpreting to some extent her choices. The anthropomorphic, unshakably structured tree, with its pasty, monochromatic acrylics, within the delicate work of the painter and draughtsman is a mighty concoction that is not always easy to read, for behind it the tree rather hides than reveals some well-hidden worlds to be explored. Through the use of her novel materials, primarily colour, the painter positions herself around a new interesting axis vis-à-vis landscape that along with drawing is equally forlorn in our times, rendering it with abundant motion, energy, inspiration and concern.

The way Denny Theocharakis reused for her own visual journey the old blueprint papers that she found in the ransacked car assembly factory at Volos, and through her recent work and by following her own, discreet codes, she composes new worlds, whilst she bears in mind our own world, this one, down here.

Η Ντένη Θεοχαράκη γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα, όπου ζει και εργάζεται. Είναι πτυχιούχος του Τμήματος Οικονομικών Επιστημών της Σχολής Οικονομικών & Πολιτικών Επιστημών του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών και κάτοχος μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου MBA με ειδίκευση στα Χρηματοοικονομικά από το Stern Business School of New York University. Σπούδασε στην Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών (2006-2011) με δασκάλους τον Γιάννη Ψυχοπαίδη στη ζωγραφική και τον Μανώλη Μπαμπούση στη φωτογραφία. Μέσα από τη γνωριμία της με μακρινούς πολιτισμούς, αναζητεί νέα οπτικά ερεθίσματα και συναισθηματικές παραστάσεις τις οποίες και μεταφέρει στη ζωγραφική της.

Denny Theocharakis was born in Athens, where she lives and works. She holds a diploma in Economics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an MBA, Major in Finance from Stern Business School of New York University.

She is a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts (2006-2011), where she studied painting with Jannis Psychopedis and photography with Manolis Baboussis.

Through the acquaintance with foreign cultures, she seeks new visual stimuli and emotional appearances that she carries in her painting.

Στην οργάνωση της έκθεσής μου συνέβαλαν σημαντικά κάποια άτομα που ειλικρινά με συγκίνησαν με την αγάπη τους, την υποστήριξή τους και την αφοσίωσή τους. Θα ήθελα ιδιαίτερα να αναφερθώ στον Παναγιώτη Μπελντέκο, τον εξαιρετικό δάσκαλο, ζωγράφο και αγαπημένο φίλο, που μου προσέφερε απλόχερα τις βαθιές του γνώσεις κάνοντας το πολύπλοκο απλό και ξεκάθαρο. Στην οικογένεια Ευριπίδη που έχει με επαγγελματισμό και μεράκι επιλέξει να προσφέρει στην τέχνη. Στη φίλη μου Μαργαρίτα Δρίλλια που με στήριξε σε όλη τη διάρκεια αυτής της προσπάθειας επιμελούμενη και της παρά μικρής λεπτομέρειας. Στην αγαπημένη μου ξαδέρφη Δέσποινα Αλεξανδρή, που μεγάλωσα μαζί της και έχει εξελιχθεί σε μια ταλαντούχο μεταφράστρια. Και τέλος, στην Ιωάννα Μακρή που έδωσε την ψυχή της γι’αυτήν την έκθεση και που μαζί με τον Νίκο Σταυρόπουλο βοήθησαν ώστε να μπορέσει αυτή η έκθεση να γίνει πραγματικότητα.
