The great resignation and the workforce demands

Employees worldwide are quitting their jobs and companies are struggling to address the problem.

The number is huge and not limited to any specific industry or location, which is posing a threat to hundreds of organizations globally, as they barely would be able to function without the workforce. Yes, the covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that followed up was the trigger. Millions of workers were put to online work and this made them realise that their duties could be delivered without attending the physical workplace. Hence each of us got a golden chance to reassess our jobs and associated hustle.

The benefits attached are quite qualitative as to give an example on how we can save the time to commute to workplace and utilize it to spend with our loved ones. This is just one of the many pros that millions of employees globally are citing to resign from their regular jobs. Some have chosen to work as freelancers whilst many have decided to look for a new job that provides better flexibility and freedom options.

More than half (54%) of employees surveyed from around the world would consider leaving their job post-COVID-19 pandemic if they are not afforded some form of flexibility in where and when they work, according to the EY 2021 Work Reimagined Employee Survey. The Great Resignation continues, as 44% of workers look for a new job, CNBC published in their report on MAR 22 2022.

Why Crowd Management?

Crowd management is becoming a more common and well-known concern as the series of events and tourists grows.

It is highly crucial for public safety that that events are managed with much care and attention.

MANAGING AND FACILITATING CROWDS HAS SHOWN TO BE FAR MORE PRODUCTIVE THAN ATTEMPTING TO CONTROL THEM IN THE PAST

There are number of sporting events take place each year outside of normal sports competitions such as baseball leagues, marathons, basketball games, rugby, and football in which it is pretty necessary to plan for crowd management and to ensure that everyone is safe. Since the beginning of the Olympic Games, crowd control has been a source of concern in the sports world, and it continues to happen today with the football games, NBA games, and other international events.

NUMBERS TALK

The Hajj to Mecca in Saudi Arabia is considered the world’s largest human gathering with almost 2.5 million pilgrims in a single month in 2019.

The statistics given below demonstrate the crowd gathering statistics by number of people visiting different places for any specific purpose such as tourism, leisure, shopping, culture, religion and pilgrimage. The massive number signifies the implementation of crowd management rather than controlling them as it used to be in the past.

7M

Tourism

TAJ MAHAL - The UNESCO World Heritage Site draws huge crowds - 7 million each year, according to The Telegraph. Hongkong's Hong Kong's highest mountain peak, Victoria Peak and Hongkong's Disney Land attracts almost the same number annually.

40M Leisure and Shopping

The Mall of America draws visitors from far and wide. According to its official website, 40 million people visit annually with one-third traveling from outside of the US. It has more than 520 shops that attract more visitors than Disneyland, the Grand Canyon and Graceland combined, according to the website.

30M

Culture and Religion

According to Japan National Tourism Organization, Travel + Leisure reports that 30,000,000 people visit the Tokyo's Meiji Jingu Shrine annually, for everything from sacred food offering and prayers to cultural exhibitions and festivals.

10M+

Religion and Pilgrimage

In 2019, over 2.5M pilgrims visited Makkah during the month of Dhul-Hijjah (12th month of the Islamic Calendar). More than 10 million foreign visitors from over 180 countries, visit Makkah annually. There are no accurate estimations of the yearly number of people performing Umrah and Circumambulation of Ka'ba, from within the Kingdom as no specific permits are required to perform Umrah for those already in KSA.

The scale of such events is especially high during the Hajj in Makkah, where there are unusually large numbers of pedestrians in some of the restrained areas, all in scorching heat depending on the time of year.

The main ritual at Rami-al-Jamarat (stoning of the pillars) is extremely populous and the diverse nature of the crowd in terms of age, ethnicity, language, and culture presents a number of administrative challenges for local coordinators, whose responsibility it is to ensure the event runs smoothly.

The Saudi government, via the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, as well as new sectors and ministries, carries out and observes the whole Hajj occasion. The government considers it as their religious obligation to deliver outstanding services to Hajj pilgrims, since their arrival in Makkah, and till they get back.

Some of the rewarding accomplishments and through carrying out development projects, the Saudi government has turned into a world leader in the management of large crowds that perform Hajj each year. In the year 2021, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took the decision to lessen the number of Hajj travellers due to Covid-19 preventive measures to safeguard their wellbeing and security

In 2015, a lethal stampede killed at least 717 Makkah pilgrims and injured hundreds. This incident happened when pilgrims were making a symbolic stone throw at the devil in Jamarat, Mina, outside Makkah. Afterward the Mina disaster, the Saudi Arabian government announced Vision 2030. This is a large-scale operation that resolves the country's excessive dependence on hydrocarbons and puts technology at the center of development and advancement. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has started preparing plans for the 2030 season with the ultimate aim of targeting 30 million pilgrims.

or the current year 2022, the government departments have finished all the necessary projects for transporting Hajj pilgrims in order to improve the facilities and assurance of the rights of all

gatherings. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is introducing the Smart Pilgrim app for the year 2022 to develop technology in its facilities. The Smart app allows Hajj pilgrims to interconnect with their service providers and notify any kind of violations to the Hajj ministry, which has vowed to manage the complaints and remarks without any delay or tolerance towards impudent Hajj service providers.

DIGITAL SOLUTION FOR HAJJ CROWD MANAGEMENT

Radio Frequency Identification

Authorities have taken a number of precautions to ensure free moving of crowds, but they continue to face challenges. The integration of various mobile technologies to achieve the objective of crowd management is the main subject of this article. People-tracking and location-based services are becoming increasingly popular. It investigates the use of RFID technology to track pilgrim’s movements. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which is already being used by many industrial and government organizations throughout the world, could be effective for scanning busy areas and thereby preventing overcrowding.

Page | 18JULY 2022

Convolutional Neural Network

There is another famous digital innovation, known as CNN which consists of the appropriate dataset used to train the Convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep learning technique that has recently piqued the interest of the research community and industry in a variety of image classification and speech recognition applications, which is critical to the image classification system.

The convolutional layer created by training CNN with patches bearing designated features of the trainee mages is the main building block of CNN. For prospective application in crowded events, other wireless methods should be examined. In an ideal world, some of the most popular event venues would be transformed into smart towns. This will include a location-aware mobile solution as well. This smart innovation will be accessible to pilgrims with smartphones in order to improve the Hajj location services with precision and timeliness of their pilgrimage.

Spatial Computing

One of the fields connected to controlling the Hajj population when pilgrims migrate from one location to another to fulfil spatial-temporal Hajj rituals is Spatial Computing. It primarily deals with the movement of pilgrims within holy places like as Arafat, Mina, Muzdalifah, and Jamarat, and is completed prior to the Hajj event. Administrative authorities assure that the specified plan is followed, and in the case of unexpected circumstances, they may demand postponing.

There are number of software applications in numerous languages which have been built for the Hajj pilgrimage to conduct various services like navigation, rituals, qibla direction, translation, prayer times, weather, currency exchange, and points of interest. The ritual facility provides a step-by-step guide to performing Hajj rituals, while the navigation service is used to identify the most efficient or quickest route from one point to another.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) is a realtime direct or indirect vision of the actual real world which is supplemented by virtual computer-generated content.

Al Jazeera produced an explainer segment that outlined Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The task of organizing millions of pilgrims from all across the globe who have gathered in Makkah for the Hajj pilgrimage is a challenging job. The Hajj audience is diverse in terms of dialect, age, gender, and culture, needing a flexible set of services to ensure that the Hajj rituals are carried out properly. Authorities are doing everything they can to guarantee that the Hajj event runs smoothly and that researchers have access to current methods and cutting-edge technology to increase the quality of offered services, to improve pilgrim security and safety during their stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It can help Hajj administrators control pilgrim mobility and provide guidance to misplaced pilgrims and locations. Sensors, digital compass, cameras, and GPS are used by devices such as head mounted displays, smartphones, handheld displays, and PDAs (personal digital assistants) to direct pilgrims on demand.

Google Sky is a famous application which displays the name of a star or planet when the user points to it.

During Hajj, similar Augmented Reality approaches can assist pilgrims in locating their tents and other sites of interest.

The Great Resignation caused a stir on a regular basis in 2021, with historic number of workers resigning from their employment.

Main reasons include falling wages despite growing costs of living, long-term job unhappiness, safety fears related to the coronavirus epidemic, and a wish to work for corporations with decent remote work guidelines. The coronavirus pandemic permitted employees to reevaluate their jobs, work settings, and career objectives. Most of the employees preferred the liberty of remote work during coronavirus pandemic, along with work life balance, which was the key motive to search for a new employment as many firms tried to keep their staff in office.

Page | 48JULY 2022

Several employees, especially the youth communities, are trying to acquire flexibility in

time schedule and stable work-life balance. Indeed the Covid-19 pandemic triggered the workers to reassess the time they spend on their job, commute, and with their families.

The United States resignation rate never exceeded 2.4% of total employment per month but in the middle of December 2000, when resignation rates were first reported by the US Ministry of Labour, and February 2021, the quit rates outdid nearly a year after the epidemic began (Gould, 2021).

Large resignation rates show employee confidence in their capacity to obtain better paying jobs, which is usually associated with financial stability, a large workforce, and minimal unemployment rates. During times of economic distress, resignation levels usually fell as well as hiring rates. Consequently, the high percentage of resignations which is causing the job market to become more unstable is expected to persist.

As per United States Bureau of Labour and Statistics, 4.3 million employees left their workplaces in December 2021, and 73% of already hired individuals indicate they are seriously considering leaving their workplaces (Lang, Turning the Tide on the Great Resignation, 2022, Entrepreneur).

For the eighth month in a row, the percentage of Americans leaving their workplaces has surpassed preepidemic ratios. The surge of resignations is just not limited to a single business sector, but affects all industries. Only 29% of worldwide IT workers claimed they have a strong intent to continue in their existing position in the technology business (Burton, 2022). In reality, the technology sector outnumbers all other sectors when it comes to resignations. The total turnover and business expansion will likely to struggle if organizations of both large and small scale do not seek solution for the resignation concern. It's critical to tackle this problem and seek for strategies to boost employee satisfaction, trust, and commitment. The best way to retain the existing staff is to constantly evolve as the great resignation remains.

The majority of the developing countries are highly impacted by the great resignation as compared with the high-income countries.

Employees in the developing nations have seen a 43% drop in working time and labor compensation since March 2020, compared to employees in the developed countries. The subsequent loss in earnings is predicted to be 86% in lower-income nations (Cotofan, 2021).

Employees in the developing nations are unlikely to work remotely, putting them at greater risk of quitting their jobs and catching the virus in their regular workplaces

According to the United Nations International Labor Organization, 26 million workers in Latin America and the Caribbean lost their employment last year due to pandemic-related shutoffs (Tharoor, 2021).

China is experiencing its own variation of the great resignation, having a younger workforce frustrated with their future and set apart by the comparatively low earnings in the industrial cities that drove the economic growth of the country.

There are significant disparities in the intensity of the global recession even among higher-income nations. The total GDP growth in Spain and U.K. had fallen by 22% from the previous year at the end of June 2020. This ratio was less than 5% in Finland, South Korea, and Norway (Golin, 2021). Within Europe, the economic implications of the recession have been exaggerated in nations whose labor markets are already unstable. Even employees in the same industry have very diverse financial prospects.

“Great Resignation” Sees Record

Page | 52JULY 2022

As we move forward, the great resignation anticipates three global developments: the resignation ratio will reduce, flexibility in work schedules will become the standard, and remote positions will be much more lucrative.

Most of the employees who left their jobs indicate the flawed corporate culture as the reason for their departure. Lack of acknowledgment, mismatch of business ethics with personal ethics, and inadequate administration are the main factors behind their resignation.

To put it another way, it’s a great re-evaluation and the extensive transition to work from home. Employees who work from their homes are expected to be detached and dissatisfied. They gradually forget their feeling of collective vision due to a lack of social connections with co-workers, and their relationship to their employer might become fragile or precarious at times.

The large proportion of modern day employees want workplace flexibility to help them maintain an equilibrium between work and life. Organizations should encourage employees to take care of family members and strike a balance by providing flexibility, such as days off and flexible working hours. Allowing employees to choose where and when they work averts burnout, increases employee performance, engagement, and enhances results.
