Topics of this competition at Daegu were immaterializaion and de-borderization. It is about transcending the physical boundaries of materials. Topics were about something architectural but as a person who lived in this city until recently, I felt there are potentials to solve current problem of the city in those two words. Daegu has been developed as an industrial city with growing demand of fiber but now the trend is down and a new paradigm is required as a driving factor for local economic growth. The first goal of the city is to be a center of fashion and trend with the basis of well-known fiber industry. To achieve the goal, the city built huge clothes manufacturing and shopping complexes but failed to attract people to visit. It is because the new fashion industry Deagu seeking for is something cognitive and cultural rather than a solid shape.

Therefore I thought immaterializaion and de-borderization could be a new architectural suggestion to the city which could not overcome current physical limit. The site given for this competition was located in the most bustling district of Daegu and was just perfect as it has huge potentials. Also, from the site, there was a famous place with gathering of small clothing stores called ‘Rodeo Streets’ across the road. I have decided to use the building for commercial purpose but realized it needs facilities to hold conferences and events to include cultures and activities rather than just shopping. So I have designed a fashion complex with auditorium, convention hall and shopping mall of gathered small clothing stores.

The nearby Rodeo Streets will help out the plan. Shops on this famous street are operating on small assets so can react sensitively to change of the trends. The unique view and various products by these shops are attracting and providing visitors unique experiences.

Not only fashion leaders in the city, but also people from other region of Korea were often visiting this place and it was an important stage to consolidate Daegu as a city of fashion.

CONVENTION HALL & AUDITORIUM

Bigger facilities are made independently and individually. Such program is the characteristic facility of this building and intended to be harmonized with the main building but to be recognized specially at the same time.

IMMATERIALIZATION & DEBORDERIZATION

Main concept of the design was to give unique image to the building and to let people unaware of internal and external boundaries of the building. To break down the boundary morphologically, I imagined assembling matters with boundaries to canceling boundaries by themselves. When there is a single mass, it will be recognized as it is. If there are two, two different masses and a path between them will be recognized. But, if the mass keep changed and duplicated then the shape of the mass itself will be disappeared and only paths and spaces between those masses will be recognized. A building made up with paths and spaces will be remembered to people as a shapeless image rather than a matter.

Such an image will help emphasizing activities of the building and also to strengthen the local culture.

Functionally, breaking down the boundary is also very important for this building since it is mostly made of clothing shops. If people can access freely at anywhere of the building instead of just a main entrance of existing buildings, it will be more conveniently and effectively used as a commercial facility for more people

TO EXTEND THE CONCEPT VERTICALLY

When the concept has applied vertically, the building will have faรงade with ambiguous character which cannot be defined. It breaks down the boundary of the building from the aspect of accessibility and partially immaterializes as the elevation is organized by mixture of material and space.

Internal spaces are made of various spaces and narrow paths. This reminds the Rodeo Streets which is made of smaller clothing stores and such structure allows people to enjoy finding goods they want.

In 2005, my father was looking for a perfect place to build a new house. The most common Dwelling patterns in Korea are apartments and my family has been living in apartments for 30 years. Father always wanted to live at a country house with great scenes but had to stick to cities due to his work and me and my brothers education. Finally, three of us entered universities in 2005 and father caught a chance to be out of cities as his position in the work is very settled.

As a student who is studying architecture, I wanted to design a house suit for the characteristic of my family.

I know tastes of each family member very well, and it will be very meaningful to design a house that my parents want. The design could be a real for our new house so I designed it more practically rather than conceptually. By the way, the building site was not confirmed so I have designed it on the basis of my 2002 housing project done in the university design studio.

My family

There are five members in my family: father, mother, me, and two brothers. My father is a university professor of Urban Planning, and my mother is an artist. My brothers and I were all in college, and each of us has distinct personalities. Every member needed space for work, and we needed a special space for a dinner and a family bond.

The Concept of Plan

Father’s study in the base floor was designed flexibly in a large space to handle various activities as receiving guests, reading, urban designing, writing and more. Dining room is the center of the first floor. Living room and backyard are located around the dining room continuously to increase the quality of spaces where my family can enjoy together. On the second floor, there is a space designed for entertainment among rooms of three brothers and a workroom is planned to be built at the end of the pitched roof for computing, architectural designing and all other works.

The Concept of Spatial Configuration Every mother wants her family to come as soon as she finished preparing meals. Since the house is a 3 storied one, it was not easy for mother to collect family members quickly. To solve the difficulty she is facing, I designed independent spaces can communicate vertically in different stories. Few dislocated major axes were chosen and spaces between them were selected to be used as method of communication. At father’s workroom it can be directly communicated with the living room and at brothers’ workroom it is directly communicable with the

CULTURAL NODE PERSONAL WORK

LOCATION : JONGRO, SEOUL, KOREA PROGRAM : COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT PERIOD : 1 SEMESTER, FALL ‘03 CRITIQUE : PROF. KWANGBAE KIM AIA / PROF. KWANJICK LEE The design project was in 2003, when various on-line activities became social issues in Korea. It was a new trend originated from the development of internet and continued to cultural development as B-boying, percussion concerts and exhibitions of famous artworks. People with same interests were sharing information on-line and enjoyed same artistic activities to begin the changes. However, due to the lack of spaces in existing cities, they could only enjoy their activities visually rather than enjoying actual performances. The site given as an assignment was where most people are gathered in Korea, and also has significant historical meanings. So I planned a community center for cultural activities considering the characteristic of the place. I designed it to be a CULTURAL NODE where allows any cultural activities as music, art, dances and more in the building and intend them to interact with each other.

SURROUNDING AREA

The basic concept of the design began with the particular characteristics of the site, because the area is one of great historical importance and has a complicated context to this day. Historically, this area was the cultural, political, and economic center of the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongbok Palace was where the kings and government officials gathered to rule the nation. Jongmyo was the royal shrine where ancestral tablets were kept and ancestral rites were performed. The traditional buildings as well as the outlines of the old roads remain to this day, and even now, many important government facilities stand close together in this area. The special coexistence of the past and the present gave rise to Insadong, an area where merchants sold antiques but which has now become the center of Korean art and a must-visit area for domestic and international tourists. Donhwamun-ro (the area surrounding the site), albeit a bit removed from the main area, was also beginning to be similarly culturally affected.

DAEGAKSA (TEMPLE)

Daegak-sa is a Buddhist temple founded by the Buddhist monk Baek Yong-Sung in 1911. It is where the major leaders of Korea gathered to participate in the independence movement against Japan during Japan’s colonial rule over Korea. It is designated as a Cultural Property of Seoul, but because it is surrounded by buildings, it is not well-known to people and difficult to locate. I wanted to reveal the temple to the public because of its great historical significance.

SITE & SPATIAL CONCEPTS

Old and small houses are clustered together with narrow streets. The narrow streets could appear stifling, but I did not want to ignore such a special local feature because it signified the historical identity of the area. As in other areas, tea houses and restaurants using the traditional Korean houses could come into existence. Using the old traditional houses and the narrow streets will be a means to maintain the unique local features in the modernized city of Seoul.

My plan consisted of connecting the buildings centered around the large yard in front of Daegak-sa and the narrow streets around the site and creating a consistent flow. The first floor is mostly an external space open to free passage by all and used as rehearsing rooms for dance groups or small bands. The narrow areas that are formed according to the shape of the buildings create a visual connection of the activities.

THE CONCEPT OF FORM

I tailored the size of the building to maintain traffic in the existing narrow streets. I set up axes so that one could go on any street from the area between buildings and made efforts to stick to the axes. The shape of the building was determined by the axes. Geometrical shapes were needed to accommodate the complex axes, so I planned sculpture-like shapes by utilizing such lines. The building, which feels like an objet, successfully expresses the characteristics of the building as a cultural space.

Jai Eun Lew, AIA / Cheol Soo Han, KIA SEE Architects has performed innovative and creative design. The company won many prizes in Korea with various proejcts. Two archtiects are well-knowned for the distinctive design.

This section is composed of my ideas and works in different projects.

CHUNHO-DONG OFFICE RENOVATION

LOCATION : CHUNHO-DONG, SEOUL, KOREA PROGRAM : COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT PERIOD : 3 MONTHS, SUMMER ‘09 MY ROLE : PROJECT MANAGER

Solely took care of the renovation project in 2009. Seoul City has collected 18 famous architects to form an architect design group for improving environment of Seoul and it was one of project assigned to the group. It was about renovating empty offices of consolidated smaller districts. The one assigned to us was Chunho-dong office at the eastern end of Seoul. I created more than 10 alternative ideas and had a lot of meetings with architect to decide how the office to be designed. Afterwards, all the designs and construction issues were handled only by me. It was very challenging for me to brief the head of Chunho-dong office and decide all the matters as I was lack of experience at then. However, I successfully conducted overall processes and it was the first building which was built just with my idea.

The site is located aside the Han River. Nearby areas are appointed as New Town redevelopment districts and the district where the site belong was planned to be a park. Especially it is located where the Gwangjin-bridge is started so it is easier for residents to recognize the place.

CHUNHO NEW TOWN SITE

BASIC CONCEPT Water and internal activities were considered for the concept of this building. As the building is located by the river, the image was required to be harmonized with water. A large window was needed to view the river. Especially, the exterior looking should be active to represent its purpose as to hold variable cultural activities for residents. When consider turning of this place into a park later, characteristic design could be well associated with its surroundings in the future, too.

It was difficult to redesign its exterior due to oval shape and symmetry of the building. Oval shape has very strong impression and it does not associated with other design factors. So many of ideas were considered and finally decided to use the oval shape more aggressively. However, symmetry was too strict to represent various internal activities.

White aluminum panel has been chose to show an image harmonized with water. White color reminds a vacations spot on a beach and smooth surface of the metal well associates with water.

BOJUNG CATHOLIC CHURCH SEE ARCHITECTS

LOCATION : BOJUNG-DONG, YONGIN, KOREA PROGRAM : CHURCH STATE : COMPETITION , PRIZE WINNER PROJECT PERIOD : 2 YEARS, ‘08 - 10’ MY ROLE : PROJECT MANAGER / CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISOR

This project was a competition about design for building a new Catholic church in Juckjeon new town. I worked as a competition team leader with 4 team members. The main concept has been decided throughout many researches and studies of origins of religions and Korean Catholic church constructions. But it was not easy to lead team members in a pressured atmosphere with competition. I was putting all my efforts and advised by many people and my team won the competition. Afterwards, I have worked as a person in charge for overall design process and experienced role as a construction supervisor, too. This building will be completed by December 2011.

MAIN CONCEPT In middle ages, churches were getting bigger to implicate the absolute being in the sky and many constructional devices were used to build it bigger. However, with developed technologies in recent days, financial or local reasons reduced size of churches and are built in normal ways. Therefore we were decided to implicate the absolute being by spatial characteristic rather than design by rational reasons.

It is probably ineffective from an economical perspective but we were tried to create a space that influence human instinct.

CHURCH of ST. PAUL

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN KOREA Korean churches were normally built in a regular style. The first floor has a large hall for meeting and gathering of people and there are small rooms at second floor or the base for studying of the bible.

Chapel is located at top floor and the chapel is separated into lower nave and upper choir loft. This style has been formed to suit with Korean characteristics and was highly recommended.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN The architect wanted to create the vertical feeling of medieval churches and deep narrow spaces among them. I was thinking of making floating chapel with objet which represents pureness and holiness and placing small attached rooms variously at the bottom. I also suggested to arrange columns on the outskirt and to use deep and narrow spaces between them more aggressively.

PERSONAL STUDY WITH MODEL Light is one of the most important factors in religious architecture. It is because the inside of chapel’s religious feeling is decided by quantity and direction of light. But different to experienced architecture, I could not really imagine feeling of the actual light. Therefore I personally made a huge model to experiment the light. This helped me to understand the overall feeling of the chapel and harmonizing lights of each section.

I was concerned more about Choir’s space composition. The sound of Choir is an important factor for Catholic rite so it needs to be isolated visually and dimensionally but the sound has to be well delivered. Also it was important to keep people have vertical feelings at right and left side of the chapel. I have suggested placing choir loft between columns of each side and using the column for the space for vertical circulation.

JUNG-DONG TOWN HOUSE SEE ARCHITECTS

LOCATION : JUNG-DONG, BUSAN, KOREA PROGRAM : RESIDENCE ( TOWN HOUSE of 9 FAMILIES ) PROJECT PERIOD : 1 MONTHS, WINTER ‘07 MY ROLE : PROJECT MANAGER

The client of the project was a president of a shipping company in Busan. He was very adventurous, and was person putting more values on building a great structure in his hometown rather than financial benefits. At the beginning of the project, I was making a mass model as a new employee. I have laid layer of mass models following the space program. However, the site was located on a high cliff where was far from the sea level and it was very boring to laying building layers on laid land layers. I made the laid models stand up and made vertical changes. The architect has agreed to my idea and the overall design of the building has become my responsibility. As I did not have much practical experiences, it was hard to practically apply ideas to the actual building design. However, I have gradually solved out problems by finding logical methods by myself to finalize the whole design.

The site is located on a seaside cliff. Geologically heights of buildings around were very different and road were very steep. But the ocean view was fantastic and luxury restaurants and villas were concentrated in the area. One of the most famous vacation spot Haeundae is near at west of the site. Therefore unusual and interesting shaped building was considered for the site.

Vertical mass becomes a very unique factor among horizontal flows around and it has potential to create active mood with its characteristic. Because of slopes on the site caused vertical masses to have horizontal changes, use those changes aggressively to let overall rhythm to be felt. The color needed to be variable and associated with active shaped building but it should not be a mess. So color of the ocean was used as a base and then slight changes were applied. These colors represent changes of the building and also associate with surrounding areas while giving unified feeling.

The site was located at the crossing point of two major roads and a bridge. The owner wanted to build a new building instead of existing worn out hotel. We tried to create a monumental shape of the city considering the location and the purpose. It was not easy to make up the shape when still satisfying the function as a big building but we succeeded to create very innovative design and won from the competition with other major firms.

EULJI-RO 119 CENTER SEE ARCHITECTS

LOCATION : EULJI-RO, SEOUL, KOREA PROGRAM : PUBLIC OFFICE (FIRE STATION) PROJECT PERIOD : 1 MONTHS, SPRING ‘09 MY ROLE : A MEMBER of DESIGN DEVELOPMENT TEAM ( STRUCTURAL DESIGN + WINDOW DESIGN )

My duty was structural design and window design in this project. It required me to consider a lot as DONGDAEMUN DESIGN PLAZA (DDP) by Zaha Hadid was building next to my place and it was having a very unusual shape. It was decided to float a fire engine looking mass in the sky and the structural problem needed to be solved to give it a float looking. 3 separated walls support the floating mass.

The core and least used of substructure walls were carefully designed to bear vertical and lateral loads of the upper structure. Also the window needed to be designed to avoiding structural problem.

This project was a competition for laboratory and headquarters of Noroo holdings, a paint and coat company. The most difficult thing was to put complicated function for a specialized company on a strict plan. I took the ground level plan, which had the most complicate function. I successfully designed various rooms as laboratory, meeting room and exhibition halls with satisfying functions and security conditions.

MY IDEA

It was my first project at SEE Architects. When I was making a mass model for decided basic shape, an inspiration suddenly struck me. The decided wave was made of horizontal curves. I gradually adjusted bottom curves to add feeling of vertical changes. The architect was interested about my idea but it could not be accepted due practical reasons.
