According to Calvino, what makes a city a city are the stories told and experienced there.1 Based on this, the study tells about “minding”, which is a proposal for a new urban experience method, through the story of two friends who came to Istanbul for a trip. Although these two friends had never been to Istanbul before, they constantly read about Istanbul and visited it many times in their own minds. One day, they decide that it already is time to go to Istanbul and set out to experience it. In the story, through what the two friends lived, thought and realized during their trip to Istanbul; urban perceptions, experiences, coincidences, memories, and their abstract and concreteness, in short, their mental relations with the city, which is a physical space, are questioned. This inquiry is made by the characters, not by us the readers. The adventure of the two friends, who argue that there should be another method for the urban experience, continues with their discovery of “minding” and the “MindCity” mobile game, which created by using this method.
Oyuncuların aslında kentte çoktan var olan üç farklı rol arasında sürekli geçiş yaptığı oyun; farklı bakış açılarından kenti deneyimlemeye olanak tanır. MindCity aracılığıyla zihinlerde yaratılan İstabullar arasında seyahat eden oyuncu, kendi İstanbul’unu kuracak, onların İstanbul’unu gezecek ve bizim İstanbul’umuza dokunacaktır.
The game, in which, the players are switching between three different roles that already exist in the city; it allows to experience the city from different perspectives. Traveling between Istanbuls created in minds through MindCity, the player will be able to make its own Istanbul, visit their Istanbul and touch our Istanbul.

Introduction
(Calvino,1972)
“You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours. Or the question it asks you, forcing you to answer...” (Calvino,1972)

“... Nice revnaklı şehirler görülür dünyada lakin efsunlu güzellikleri sensin yaratan.” 2
“... Nice revnaklı şehirler görülür dünyada Lakin efsunlu güzellikleri sensin yaratan.” 2
Kitaptan başını kaldırdı. İstanbul’a gidelim, dedi. Neyi bekliyoruz ki? Birçok şey okuyoruz İstanbul hakkında, birçok şey duyuyoruz. Zihnimizde yarattığımız ve zihnimizde defalarca gezdiğimiz bu kente gidip yerinde deneyimleme vaktimiz geldi çoktan. Evet, evet, yarın İstanbul’a gidiyoruz.
He lifted his head from the book. Let’s go to Istanbul, he said. What do we wait for? We read things about Istanbul and hear a lot about it. It already is time, to experience this city that we created and visited repeatedly in our minds. Yes, alright, we are going to Istanbul tomorrow.
Planlanması gereken çok şey vardı. Öncelikle, ne kadar kalacaklardı orada, nerede kalacaklardı? Hem nasıl gideceklerdi ki? Mersin’den İstanbul’a her gün uçuş var mıydı?
There was a lot to be planned. First up, how long would they stay there and where? Also, how would they even go there? Were there flights every day from Mersin to Istanbul? Would it be easier to go by car? No, flying there would be the best option, where would they even park the car anyway? Would they need to take public transit then? How would they manage to do so? He was sure about wanting to visit every museum in the city; his travel companion probably would want to get lost in the beautiful streets. However, there were a lot of places to visit in this city made up of three cities.3 What if I forget one, he thought. It seemed to be a good idea to surf the net.

New tab, write, where to stay in Istanbul, hit search. There were a lot of results, but not many options… “Kadıköy, Beyoğlu, Levent, Kadıköy, Beyoğlu…” Maybe he started from the wrong place to search. New tab, write, places to visit in Istanbul, hit search. “Visit the historical peninsula, eat ice cream in Bebek, take the ferry from Beşiktaş, have breakfast in Çengelköy, go to the Galata Tower with your loved one, go to amusement parks, go to the tops of the skyscrapers (Figure 1)…”
-Without a doubt, we know what questions our character is asking, but maybe, in some other places, in some other stories, different questions are being asked to the city and answers to those questions are also different. Who knows, maybe Mrs. Müjgan, who lives two hours away from the city center, must to sink her feet into the sea in Şile, but Uncle Bill, who bought his ticket ten months ago, must see the Hagia Sophia. Well, what if Uncle Bill wants to watch the sky while soaking his feet in cold waters? But really, who decides what to answer to which question?-
Some websites even recommended what to do in each hour of the day. There were also tours in which they could visit the city as a part of a group; however, all of them led to the same destinations. He started to think, if his travel companion searched, the same results would have shown up too. Whereas, the Istanbul they both want to experience was a whole lot different from each other. Adding that the tour group would add up to thirty…Thirty different minds, thirty different people who are not at all the same, trying to get to know the same city with the same routes and the same perspectives (Figures 2,3,4,5)… There must be another way. He scribbled some places’ names that interested him on some paper, he didn’t forget to include some places that might attract his travel companion’s attention. He headed towards the wardrobe to get ready.

Soru
Question
The minute they got off the tramway, he was disoriented. Which way was the south? Where was the Bosphorus? The building on our right is the Saint Benoit High School, do you think we can get in, asked his travel companion. What a beautiful building, he replied, but we need to get to the Galata Tower before it’s closed. They didn’t know how to get there yet. He took out his phone and spoke to the microphone, how to go to the Galata Tower from here? The route appearing on the screen seemed very short (Figure 6). There must be a reason why it is so short, I think it will take us there with a princely ladder, said his travel companion. They were both tired from walking all day, they decided to find another way.

Yoldan geçen sarı ceketliye seslendi; bakar mısınız, buradan Galata Kulesi’ne nasıl gidebiliriz? İlk başta irkildi sarı ceketli, ardından yavaş yavaş tarif etmeye başladı: tramvay yolunu takip edin, ilk yol ayrımından yukarı çıkın, sağınızda çok güzel bir merdiven göreceksiniz, onu tırmanın ve yeşil renkli binanın önünden sağa dönün, sonra da hemen sağ yapın, kendinizi kulenin önünde bulacaksınız (Şekil 7).
He asked someone with a yellow jacket who was passing by; sorry, how to go to the Galata Tower from here? The yellow jacket guy first flinched, then started to describe the way slowly; follow the tramway tracks, take the first turnout heading up, you’ll see a beautiful ladder, climb it and turn right in front of the green building, then turn right again, you’ll find yourselves in front of the tower (Figure 7).
They thanked the tourist with the yellow jacket and discussed if they wanted to climb the ladder or not. It was best to ask another person. They headed to an old man who was sitting on a stool in front of a small shop, sorry for bothering you, how to go to the Galata Tower from here? The old man started to describe with a smile on his face; you better go back from here. There is a parking lot on your left, take that street. If you continue up ahead from Lüleci Hendek without turning, you will see the Tower. Drink some tea while sitting on the stairs in front of the tower, Handan brews great tea there (Figure 8).

-This time there is only one question that’s being asked from our characters and the city starts to answer that one question. Answers differentiate as characters vary. Because, in fact, every answer creates its own route and its own city. Can it be the uniqueness of these cities and these routes that keeps the city alive?-
With his travel companion, they started to take the old man’s route to the Tower. They had a hard time locating the parking lot first, it was in an obscure place, and you needed to be there before to locate it quickly. Maybe the old man parked his car there every day and the lot was a triangulation4 point for him. They continued up ahead from a street, hoping that it was the Lüleci Hendek. It was the second street name that they learned after Istiklal. The road kept going up, so did they. When he finally felt that they were descending, he realized that they were lost. We better turn left from here, he said to his travel companion.
Perception
Algı
The moment they took the street on the left, the first thing he noticed was the Galata Tower at the end of the street, and also noticed a group of people captivated by the tower. He quickly glanced at the bay-windowed buildings lined up one after the other on his left, before taking his travel companion’s arm and drag his companion towards the Tower (Figure 9).
Her sokağı sindire sindire, detayların hakkını vererek incelemeyi seviyordu; pencerelerin söveleri, birbirine hiç benzemeyen kapılar… Bir anda sürüklenmeye başladığını hissetti, nereye gittiklerini bile anlamadı (Şekil 10).
His travel companion was shocked after seeing the trees on their left. How little we saw the color green today, it was all here, his companion thought. His companion liked to examine each street with composure, paying homage to the details; the jambs of windows, doors that are completely unlike each other. The travel companion suddenly felt like drifting, not even understanding where they were going (Figure 10).
4. According to Lynch, triangulations create subjective reference points and can be more detailed. For example, a tree in a square, the facade of a shop, the door of a building, or even a doorknob.

-We see that our characters took off for a journey on the map the old man sitting on the stool drew for them. Their journey started with experiencing the city in the old man’s mind, continued with creating new and different cities on their own minds; there were bay-windowed buildings on one’s mind while the Galata Tower with all its glow was on the other’s. In fact, these routes of the tourist with the yellow jacket and the old man on the stool can be viewed as cognitive maps5 that are combinations of relationships of various concepts (Türk, 2017).-

It was getting dark when they came down from the tower. They sat down at the recommended tea shop to rest a bit and watch the tower under the lights. They have been in this city for five days, but today, they did not feel like strangers to the city for the first time. I think it is
5. Südaş ve Öz’ün (2018) aktardığına göre, bilişsel haritalama kavramı ilk kez Psikolog Tolman (1948), “Cognitive maps in rats and men” başlıklı makalesinde kullanmıştır. Bu çalışmasından elde ettiği bulgulardan hareketle Tolman, insanların sinir sistemlerinde yer alan kara kutularında haritaya benzer bir temsil inşa ettiklerini (bilişsel harita) ve bu temsillerin insanların günlük yaşamlarındaki her hareketine rehberlik ettiğini varsaymaktadır.
5. According to Südaş and Öz (2018), the concept of cognitive mapping was first used by psychologist Tolman (1948) in his article titled “Cognitive maps in rats and men”. Based on the findings of this study, Tolman assumes that people construct a map-like representation (cognitive map) in their black boxes in their nervous systems and that these representations guide people’s every move in their daily lives.

because we are in Galata, he said to his companion, or because we’re lost. His companion agreed with the latter, we almost haven’t used the navigation yet, maybe that’s why. After a long silence that contributed to some deep thoughts, how about coming back here tomorrow, asked his companion. They turned Istanbul into a playground, they were going to experience that day again.
-Bu yeniden deneyim isteği, kapitalist çalışma düzeninin yaşamaya, hayal kurmaya izin vermeyen yapısına karşı olan sitüasyonistlerin6 dérive 7adını verdikleri dolaşmalara benzetilebilir.-
-This desire for re-experiencing can be compared to the wanderings which the situationists6 refer to as dérive7, against the capitalist working order which does not allow living and dreaming.-
On their sixth day in Istanbul, they arrived in front of the high school early in the morning. Today, there was only one thing on the to-do list; visiting the Galata Tower. It did not matter how, when, and which path to follow. They took this street, ate ice cream on that corner, chatted with a musician ahead and got lost after taking those stairs… Where they were trying to go was not important anymore; the road itself was far more enjoyable than the destination.
Rastlantı
Coincidence
It was dark already, the street which the tower was laying on was crowded and it looked magnificent under the lanterns. Yesterday, he thought, I didn’t notice those buildings with bay windows, I was on the same street, but now, how different I perceive everything (Figure 11). They headed to the same tea place they visited yesterday, on their way, a painter who wanted to paint their picture and a crowd listening to a musician, who suddenly started playing the violin, stopped them on their way. As they sat, they learned that they had come across an annual art festival on the street. If

they had listened to the navigation and not asked the way yesterday, they would not have decided to come here again today and they would not have even heard of this festival. Indeed, how coincidental was the urban experience. His travel companion wanted to drink tea just like yesterday -according to him, it was the best tea you can drink in Istanbul- he called the waiter to order.
-On the sixth day, our characters, with an attitude similar to flâneur8 , saw potential in the city and followed that. They followed an instinctive and accidental path and discovered perhaps the best tea in the city. This inventiveness may not make them a complete flâneur. However, the similarity of the methods they unwittingly applied should not be overlooked.-
8. Baudelaire (1863) creates the concept of flâneur, a passionate spectator, a street wanderer. According to Tunç (2018), Benjamin (1995) embodies the flâneur as: the street turns into a residence for him; just as the man in the street feels at home within his own four walls, the flâneur feels at home between the facades of the building. To him, glossy enameled company signs are wall decoration, more or less like an oil painting in a bourgeois hall.

Proposal of a Method for Urban Experience: Minding
Bellek
Memory
Şehre geleli on gün olmuştu, kente alışmaya başlamışlardı.
It was the tenth day, they were getting used to the city. Thinking that there might be traffic at that time, they decided to take the subway. The school uniforms of a group of young people, who were debating whether they could make it to class, caught their attention: Saint Benoit High School. I think the tallest building we saw in Istanbul was the Galata Tower, he told to his companion. Companion agreed: yes, I think so, do you remember the trees as if there was a small forest in the street? He couldn’t remember. On the right of the street were two-story buildings with bay windows, I remember them, he said. His companion also remembered the buildings, but it felt like there were more trees than buildings (Figure 12).
Soyut ve Somut
Abstract and Conctrete
He brought up his phone as soon as he got off the subway. Browser, write, Galata Tower, search. He was shocked by the result. This image of Galata Tower, which appeared before them, in all its concreteness, was quite different from what they both had in mind (Figure 13). -At this point, we need to talk about abstract-concrete9 and real-virtual10. Such concepts as social media, virtual world, dream and memory are associated with virtual space. And virtual spaces are “not real”.When we look at a picture on the Internet, that place, that image is now real in its own realm. When we remember a city, we remember the image of that city in our mind, this image is as abstract as possible, but still, its reality for us does not change. Therefore, let’s continue our story by using abstract-concrete concepts instead of virtual-real.Like every individual, they saw a concrete space, perceived certain parts of that concrete space and reconstructed these parts in their own memories. These memory spaces had become abstract spac-

es that created their own reality, separated from the existing. He began to think, they remembered the tower quite differently than it was, and their recollections were quite wrong. The tower image they created in their memory was more real to them. Assuming that his travel companion had the same thoughts, he began to speak: What would how many trees are actually in front of the Galata Tower change? It doesn’t matter whether the city is truly enchanted or not, it was Istanbul that created enchanted beauties for Beyatlı, and this is what actually matters.
-Our characters knew where to go, what to eat even before they started their journey. Now, the city image in their minds, with the invasion of technology, is faced with the imposition of concrete space. Like cyberflâneur11, their dreams are conflicted with the reality; however, regardless of space and time, they have the freedom to experience any place they want to whenever they like.-
11. Goldate (1998) argues that today’s flâneur can be found on the web. According to him, the cyberflâneur navigates the virtual architecture anonymously. He is a kind of voyeur, who enjoys knowing and seeing everything. The internet is to the cyberflâneur what the city and the street are to the flâneur. It is both there and here and freed from time.

Günlerdir onlara önerilen yerlere, onlara önerilen şekillerde gidiyorlar, geziyorlardı. Kendileriyle aynı rotayı izleyen, aynı şeyleri yapan birçok insan daha vardı. Kenti deneyimlemek isteyen her insan aynı rotayı izlerse, kent deneyiminden söz etmek mümkün olur muydu?
For days, they had been going to the suggested places. Many other people followed the same route as them, doing the same things. If everyone who wants to experience the city follows the same route, would it be possible to talk about the urban experience? It was certain that the only time they did not feel like a stranger in the city was those two days that began with the map of the uncle sitting on the stool, which then transformed into a game. The Istanbul they created in their own minds was much more valuable than the identical Istanbuls which was presented to them. Could these mind cities be used as a method in the urban experience? The silence that appeared when they dug into their phones was interrupted by his travel companion’s shout: I found it! Then, he began to read aloud:

1. There are no pre-existing immutable rules, each move invents its own rule.
2.Hamlelerin hepsi rastlantıyı olumlar ve dallandırır.
2. All moves affirm and branch out the coincidence.
3.Oyuncu tarafından verilmesi beklenen kararlar, onlara yöneltilen rastgele sorularla belirlenir.
3. The decisions expected to be made by the player are determined by random questions addressed to them.
4. Winning can mean losing; losing can also mean winning. There is constant change and unexpectedness.
5. Oyunda tanımlanan roller rastgeledir, kalıcı değildir ve sürekli dönüşüm halindedir (Şekil 15).
5. The roles defined in the game are random and in a constant state of transformation, but they are not permanent (Figure 15).

Roller
Roles
Kent Kurucu
City Maker
In the game interface, the city maker creates their own three-dimensional cognitive map -their own cities-. When the makers navigate to locations, complete quests, or answer questions or fail to do so, they gain or lose items, or create own items. Their city is open to constant change and they enhance the urban experience by leaving notes for themselves and their travelers (Figure 16 and 19).
Gezgin
Traveler
Their main task is to experience the cities of the city makers. When they wander the city, complete quests or answer questions or fail to do so, they gain or lose new duties, rights, and items. During the experience, they encounter the notes from the city makers and make additions to the notes or not (Figure 17 and 20).
Karar Verici
Decision Maker
It is a special and short-term role. They make additions to the cities of the city makers; they decrease, change, destroy, and rebuild them or don’t. They make changes to the cities that the travelers roam and their missions, add new ones, change the roles, or don’t (Figure 17 and 21).

Sonuç
Conclusion
They continued their journey, which started by asking questions to the city, by answering to the city’s questions on the MindCity interface. The constant relationship of these cities, which were abstracted in the minds, with the physical space made the game exciting. Sometimes, they re-experienced the same places from different minds and perspectives, sometimes they effected the experiences of other players. As they made additions to their own abstract cities, their memories of concrete space got stronger. When their travels came to an end, it would be possible that Istanbul was the city they remembered most.
-Our characters are native tourists. Another method of urban experience may limit the experience itself with many elimination and matching criteria, such as where they come from, who they are, and what are their interests. Minding, on the other hand, opposes this separation and makes experience subjective by constantly confronting different minds. While the roles, being assigned by the game, they support subjectivity, it also offers different perspectives. This tension, between those who repeatedly make permanent and irreversible changes in the city (city maker), those who make decisions for the city from the top (decision maker), and those who exist in the city among all these changes and obstacles (traveler), leave its place to empathy in MindCity.-
Galata Kulesi’nin önünde günde beş yüz not bırakılırken, kulenin altındaki çaycıda günde iki not bırakılmasının sebebi neydi? Seyahat arkadaşının sesiyle düşüncelerinden uzaklaştı. Birlikte yeni bir zihin-kentin içinde, yeni bir yolculuğa çıktılar.
Their perspectives of city and game were different. For the companion, the game was just a tool for urban experience. On the other hand, he thought that it was possible to make a reading of the city by examining the Istanbuls of the city makers. How many people added yellow items for their own discoveries; how many people noticed the trees first, when they entered the Lüleci Hendek? What made people leave five hundred notes in front of the Galata Tower, while only two notes left for the tea shop under it? Companion’s voice made him come to himself. Together, they started a new journey, in a new mind-city.
Ve gökten üç kent düştü: biri kent kurucunun, biri gezginin, diğeri de karar vericinin başına.
From the sky fell three apples: one to city maker, one to traveler, and one to decision maker.
