Revitalizing Oceanside Unified School District
Located in the picturesque city of Oceanside, CA, OUSD faced an all-too-common dilemma: the outdated furniture in its schools was a learning roadblock. And while districts often wait to replace old furniture until they’ve remodeled, OUSD recognized their growing students needed a modernized learning space sooner. So, they came to Demco with a request — an enormous request. Was it possible to outfit 15 elementary schools with updated furnishings in just one summer?
“When I was tasked with replacing all of the furniture in the school district [during the summer of 2022], I was a little nervous,”
says Dr. Andrea Norman, Associate Superintendent of Business Services. “Typically, school districts will do maybe one or two schools at a time. When I tell people from outside of our school district about the project, they can’t believe the scale.”
Creating effective and equitable learning environments for 9,000 students across 15 K–5 schools (three of which were located on Camp Pendleton military base) was deemed nearly impossible by most of OUSD’s potential project partners. But after an extensive interview process, Dr. Norman says, “Demco came out heads above the rest because of the services that they were able to offer.”

The Demco team surveyed every classroom and existing piece of furniture, coordinated input from across the district to inform eight pilot classrooms, provided seamless project management in the midst of a supply chain crisis, developed visionary interior design that met the needs of dozens of educators at once, and ensured on-time delivery and installation of nearly 25,000 pieces of flexible furniture.
And the whirlwind process “could not have gone better because of the planning and direction from Demco,” says Dr. Norman. Teachers at OUSD schools say the new furniture has “made a huge improvement for students and their learning,” giving every student an equal spot in the room and a sense of ownership over the space. “With updated furniture,” says Education Specialist Janelle Slasor, “students feel like they matter, that we are ready to invest in them. And when we invest in them, they know that we care.”

The challenge
Menasha’s Maplewood School, the nation’s largest net-zero energy middle school, is home to more than 1,000 fi h- through eighth-grade students. Their team broke ground on a new school thanks to an approved $99.7 million referendum. Demco participated in the RFP process and was selected to help the growing district create adaptable and flexible spaces for their students now and into the future.
The solutions
Together, Demco and Maplewood School piloted two classrooms of furniture and solicited feedback from Maplewood School’s sta and students, ensuring each space had buy-in from everyone. The new spaces included a mix of furnishings that move and flex, supporting students and di erent instructional methods, as well as eye-catching pieces that support student choice.
Change management played a key role in the process, recognizing that when sta move into a new or renovated building with new types of furniture, they o en need to know how to make the most out of those spaces. Demco’s Dr. Robert Dillon facilitated a professional development day, preparing Maplewood School’s sta for their new spaces and utilizing breakout spaces and collaboration areas.
The response
Menasha sta expressed that hearing the ideas and answers to their questions from a nationally known education space expert was extremely helpful, ensuring they felt comfortable and confident in their new spaces. This empowered them to use the brand-new spaces to their full potential.

How Demco helped one district support equitable classrooms and student choice
The first project
Serving more than 21,000 pre-K–12 students, Bethel School District (BSD) aims to support equitable classrooms and provide options to students across nearly 30 schools. That’s why the district formed an ongoing relationship with Demco to help update its learning environments. It began in 2020 while COVID-19 was still deeply impacting supply chains and overseas shipping, creating unique hurdles to success. Despite this, the team transformed the 9,000-square-foot Bethel Hope Early Learning Center from a defunct church into a zoned, nature-themed oasis for young learners and their teachers.
Building on success
BSD’s Katherine G. Johnson Elementary School now boasts exciting space-themed decor, reflecting the school’s namesake and Voyagers theme. The elementary school is outfitted with an abundant makerspace, music room, special education rooms, comfortable seating areas, and classrooms packed with functionality. The library even includes a custom ColorScape® Playpod in the shape of a rocket! “Customers love the rocket because it really sparks students’ imaginations,” says Stephen Gower, Demco Design Supervisor.
Another exciting component of BSD’s transformation was Graham-Kapowsin High School, which included a huge

breadth of diverse spaces over four phases: a broad and welcoming commons area; the adjoining cafeteria with tiered so seating for relaxed learning; and a brand-new wing of specialty classrooms outfitted with Demco furnishings and specially sourced pieces.
Demco also worked on the health services spaces housed in the schools. Each had to ensure privacy and reduce lines of sight, and furnishings had to be easy to wipe down and withstand heavy tra ic and harsher cleaning solutions. Storage cabinets and desks needed to be secure, too.
An ongoing partnership
Bethel continues to choose Demco — including for their upcoming new high school — because of the easy, enjoyable process. They cite the clarity and deep understanding facilitated by the initial exploratory meetings; 2D, 3D, and virtual reality renderings that make envisioning (and evaluating) the plan simple; clear and proactive communication from Demco, including a to-do list of next steps; and an approachability that keeps all team members engaged and excited.

School commons are the connective tissue of the learning environment, where students gather, recharge, and connect beyond the classroom walls. These shared spaces support everything from collaboration and social learning to quiet moments of pause in a busy day. When designed with intention, commons invite belonging, adapting to group work, casual conversation, and community events alike. More than pass-through areas, they become vibrant hubs that strengthen school culture and bring learning, creativity, and connection together in one welcoming place.
Studies of informal learning spaces show that students naturally gravitate toward comfortable, adaptable areas between classes for collaboration, study, and social interaction, suggesting these environments extend learning and connection beyond the classroom.
