Committees Looking for New Volunteer Members The Communication Committee (ComCom) has 2-3 committee positions opening starting Jan 1, 2024.

This Committee partners with the Board, other Committees and AAM to help communicate through the newsletter, eBlasts & website. ComCom also partners to develop surveys to help provide data to inform Committee discussions. We meet the 3rd Monday of the month at 1-2pm.

Residents interested in serving on the ComCom can fill out an application by clicking on the link below, or by requesting an application at the Saguaro Center Welcome Desk.

Holiday Pool Reminders Article submission by Valda Rosenthal

With the holidays approaching, residents may have family and friends visiting, Below are some rules and regulations to remember. The Pool and Spa Rules and Regulations have been revised and are posted on the DWDM website (See pages 7-10 Common Area Rules & Regulations) • • •

Use of the Pool/Spa Complex is “Swim at your own risk.” There is no lifeguard on duty.

6 guests (maximum) per household are allowed in the Pool/Spa Complex each day.

Residents are responsible for their guests and how their behavior could potentially impact the enjoyment of others.

Children 4-15 years old are allowed in Pool/Spa Complex under the supervision of an adult from 3 -6PM daily. Children in diapers or under 4 years of age are allowed on the pool deck under the supervision of an adult but not in the swimming pool.

Food is allowed on the pool deck but not in the pool or spa. Glass containers are prohibited in the Pool/Spa Complex. All drinks must be in a sealed unbreakable container. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the Pool/Spa Complex.

During normal business hours, access to the Pool/Spa Complex is through the Saguaro Center after checking in at the Welcome Desk. Guests must be accompanied by a Resident. Outside of normal business hours access to the Pool/Spa Complex is by way of the Pool/Spa Complex gate using your assigned access code. If you do not have an access code or need a new one, contact the staff at the Welcome Desk.

Saguaro Center Receives Upgraded Security Cameras Article submission by David Eisenberg

The Center has had external security cameras since the building was first built in 2015. The cameras provide some deterrence and collect useful images if we experience an adverse event like a crime or an insurance claim.

The original cameras were analog, were degrading, and had relatively poor image quality. As a part of the reserve study, upgraded cameras were budgeted and replaced with digital versions. The image quality is now significantly enhanced. As is normal, the ILC evaluated the current camera system to determine if upgrade was necessary, developed and circulated an RFP among local security camera companies, and then evaluated four different competitive bids before choosing.

The cameras are in plain view, four to the rear of the Center covering the pool, hot tub, and back lawn and one capturing images at the front door. The images are collected by software on the computer system in the Center and can only be accessed by the Center manager. The software runs in a loop, re-recording over old images with new ones every few weeks. If we need to provide a section of recording to the police, for example, the staff can download the applicable section and share it. The cameras capture images only, no sound. There are no cameras inside the facility.

We have been very fortunate that as a community we've experienced very few adverse events in our public space. The Board will continue to consider our security needs as appropriate.

Landscape Strategic Plan Update #6 Article submission by LSP Team

The Landscape Strategic Plan (LSP) report, prepared

by Wilder Landscape Architects (Wilder), and with oversight from the LSP team, is currently being finalized in November. As you will recall from earlier communications, the Board approved the establishment of an LSP team, consisting of interested residents, who would serve on the committee and ensure community input. Separately, Wilder was identified and engaged, and along with the LSP team tasked with providing longterm guidance for the enhancement of the 35 acres of landscaped common area. Specific focus was provided to the development of a landscape that would be waterwise, attractive, sustainable and complement our Sonoran Desert environment.

Once completed, the full report will be shared with the community via email and saved on our website. We anticipate this will occur by mid-December. Separately a hardcopy of the full report will be published and placed in the Saguaro Center lobby along with poster boards sharing key recommended concepts and takeaways.

And, finally, for those preferring an in-person review, opportunity to share feedback and have open discussion, multiple Town Hall meetings (including Zoom) will be hosted by the LSP towards the end of January 2024.

Financial Considerations Please know that specific focus and attention is being provided to any funding and project expenditures.

Projects will not be initiated prior to community review and feedback and there are no special assessments anticipated at this time. Further, the Board has committed to waiting until the Pulte arbitration has been resolved. It is important to re-emphasize that the proposed LSP conceptual landscape renovations correct many landscape defects left by the developer (Pulte) and are included in the arbitration claims. These potential landscape ideas help us follow-up on the recommendations from two Transition Committee Team recommendations (Finance Team’s #8 and Asset Engineering Maintenance (AEM) #1B) to establish a plan to address landscape defects. These include: (1) over-planted areas, (2) areas with intermittent plantings, (3) areas with no landscape, (4) large turf areas, (5) improperly placed trees, (6) extensive, poorly maintained, and improperly identified irrigation system with continuous leaks and more. Essentially, the current landscaping is not sustainable, and the LSP report will be invaluable in demonstrating recommended strategies to correct the defects. After arbitration next summer, the Board could begin reviewing a first project

In other words, no projects requiring expenditure will be initiated until after the Town Hall meetings, after the arbitration has been completed, and after associated funding is determined. It is expected that this will not occur earlier than late 2024.

Musings on Irrigation Article submission by Susan Roden

Cool weather is here for a few months, with touches of rain. Is your entire front and back yard on the same watering schedule? Are your saguaros on the same schedule as your lantanas? Do you change your watering schedule for different seasons?

If you haven’t already increased the number of days between watering on your irrigation timer, do so now. People with all desert plants in their yard, can turn off the irrigation here in the wintertime. Most people have a mixture of cactus and non-cactus on the same irrigation line. If you feel better leaving your irrigation controller on, set it to water every 15 days. You want to change the frequency of days between watering before you change the duration of watering. Your native desert plants are accustomed to living off of the rain that falls naturally. All cactus grow in the summer heat and need no water in the cold season when they are dormant. If a tree is the only non-cactus in your yard, give it a drink from the hose every few weeks in the winter, and turn off your irrigation. If your yard is a mix between cactus and non-cactus, it is easier to hand water the noncactus during winter, than it is to hope the cactus on the same water line will dry out. And replacing saguaros is not inexpensive. Cacti really do not like being overwatered.

Do your agaves keep getting grubs? You may be overwatering the agaves. Less water will save more than money on grub poison.

In some cases, it is good to know that water can act as an insulator. Plant cells that are plump with water will be stronger against cold damage. Likewise, moist soil will tend to stay warmer than dry soil, so a good soaking right before freezing temperatures can help protect plants.

But avoid watering cactus in the fall or winter. Cactus plants begin to shrink and take on a wilted, off-color appearance to prepare themselves for the coming weather. This is a normal part of their hibernation process, if you water your cactus during this time, the excess water can freeze and kill the plant.

One of the most recognizable plants in our neighborhood is the Texas Ranger, also called Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens). The plant is a native to the Chihuahuan Desert including parts of Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, and SE Arizona. It is a hardy evergreen shrub known for its ability to grow and thrive in extreme hot and dry conditions. It can also survive temperatures down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The showy flowers range in color from purple and lavender to pink and white depending on the variety of the plant.

This plant tends to bloom in periods of high humidity and rain thus earning the nickname “barometer bush”. Texas Ranger shrubs are relatively pest-resistant and require very little watering making them a low maintenance choice for landscaping. These plants can grow up to 8 feet tall and about 4 feet wide. This makes them a popular choice for hedges, and privacy. It's recommended to prune them once a year in late winter or early spring to remove dead and woody stems and to encourage new growth. These native plants provide nectar for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds when in bloom turning your yard into a nature wonderland.

Overall, the Texas Ranger shrub is a symbol of resiliency and adaptation to the arid American Southwest environment.

Use a Variety of Serves To keep the returner off balance your serve needs to have some variety to it. Placement, spin and speed are three variables to incorporate.

First, start with serving down the middle, then wide and finally at the body.

Second, use a different pace for each of the serves Third, sometimes hit a slower second serve with more spin for your first serve.

The one area that we can practice on our own is the serve.
