Landscape Cost Savings and $10,000 Grant from Tucson Water Smartscape HOA Transformation Program Article submission by the LSP

In case you were unable to attend one of the two Town Halls, the Landscape Strategic Plan (LSP) Team wanted to share some good news regarding cost savings for our Community.

Good news! We will save $13,000 annually on landscape maintenance. The Landscape Strategic Plan (LSP) team worked with Wilder Landscaping and one of the focus areas was to really understand the vast irrigation “spaghetti” throughout our 35 acres of irrigated Common Areas. Together with Wilder’s irrigation specialist, the LSP team evaluated the plants and trees throughout the community using the irrigation “map” to assess whether the plants in a given area were established and whether we could potentially stop irrigating. The LSP learnings were shared with the Infrastructure and Landscape Committee (ILC) and the ILC has implemented two initiatives to save money now.

1. Turn off Water in selected areas ($10,000).

Identified 7 meters and 4 zone valves that could be shut off now. Shutting off these meters and valves will save 1.2 million gallons of water which translates to $10,000 annually. By shutting off irrigation water to these areas, there will no leaks to find and fix which saves labor and material cost. The locations of irrigation inactivation zones are shown on a map in Appendix C of the LSP (page 3, peach and brown shaded areas).

Inadvertently, in 2022, irrigation had been shut off in 2 locations (Grand Canyon, and lower Deer Creek Trail). These locations are essentially ‘unplanned experiments’ to learn more about the impact of selectively stopping irrigation where plants are established. With Wilder’s expertise, the team felt reassured that we can turn off some valves and the ILC will continue to monitor these locations. Note that as mentioned in the LSP report, the LSP recommends strategically adding using seed balls (homemade “mud meatballs” made from seeds, compost, and clay) to add plant material to our Grand Canyon. Please refer back to the November Newsletter Article for additional information about seed balls and Grand Canyon.

Stop applying herbicides and allow native plants

2. Stop applying herbicides and allow native plants to grow ($3,000). Our current landscape maintenance firm, Complete Landscaping, has been weed whacking and applying chemical herbicides in many of our common areas. Some Residents have complained about the use of chemicals. Herbicide application has been stopped in the following Common Area locations: Phase VII (Grand Canyon), Phase VIII (Little Grand Canyon), Lower Cape Final, Lower Deer Creek Trail and Rim Trail Common Area (Phase V) and only plants deemed “invasive” are to be physically removed. The contract with Complete Landscaping was amended and is saving approximately $250/month or $3,000 annually.

More Good News, Tucson Water Smartscape HOA Landscape Transformation Program has awarded our HOA a $10,000 grant. This grant award will be applied to the Reserve fund. The grant was awarded after they reviewed the final LSP report.

Forest Bathing Article submission forwarded by Susan Roden

You know when you are having a bad day, or are not in a good mood? You take a walk outside and the fresh air clears your mind and heart. On a really tough day, a very long walk may be the necessary solution.

Scientific studies have been conducted that support reduced stress, improved attention and mood, and even an immunity boost from being in nature. Forest bathing includes using all of one's senses while walking slowly in nature.

In the early 1980’s, the Japanese Health Ministry was aware of an increase in stress and depression among their sedentary workers. Shinrin-yoku, or ‘forest bathing’, is what they named the prescription to get out-of-doors and into nature. Today, Japan has designated walkways and even guides to direct one’s attention to their connection with nature and the healing of their psyche.

Desert Forest Bathing has arrived at health spas in Arizona. Besides massages, wellness groups and spas offer ways to be present in and connected with the natural world along prescribed walkways.

Lest you think this is some new ‘hippie-dippie’ therapy, I found abundant information for this article online, including Harvard Health Publishing. Current studies on the chemicals emitted from plants, especially after a rain, support the healing properties of nature. The psychological healing is harder to prove conclusively, but definitely indicates positive results.

Besides Forest Bathing, Forest Listening is another way one can connect with Nature and absorb the benefits. For many years some people have used recordings of a mountain stream, or other woodland sounds, to lull themself to sleep. A guide can help one learn to use all five of our human senses to connect with nature around us. I believe you need not wait for a guide. Just try it yourself. We have so many hiking and walking paths nearby. If you don’t have the time or ability to walk far, sit on a bench at a park (away from traffic) or even your own backyard. Close your eyes. Listen to the sounds of nature. And smell what is around you (especially after a rain). Open your eyes. We live in a wonderland of bird and animal life. Slow down and take in what nature is offering. It is not a race, it is more of a journey.

Not Consistent with your Ball Toss Imagine the ball is an egg If you’re having difficulty placing the ball consistently and accurately on your service release, you may be holding the ball too tightly in your fingers. Doing so creates stiffness in the hand and arm that can hamper the placement of your toss.

To remedy the problem, imagine that you’re lifting an egg instead of a tennis ball as you start your delivery.

Obviously, you need to be light fingered. The ball should rest on the tips of your fingers as you lift it gently upward. When your hand reaches about head level, all you have to do is allow the ball to leave your fingertips naturally.

With practice, your release will be more consistent and accurate.

Empty Rx Pill Bottles are needed by the Primavera Foundation to be re-purposed for personal hygiene kits to the homeless and other vulnerable residents of Pima County.

Empty Bottles are then filled with personal essentials such as: • Shampoo • Conditioner • Hand & body lotion • Liquid soap Please bring your empty Rx pill bottles WITH THE LABELS OFF and drop in the plastic bin at the Saguaro Center.

Please note they can only use Rx bottles.

Safety Tip of the Month First Aid Reminders Ensure your first aid supplies are not expired. Over time, materials can degrade and medications can lose their effectiveness. Know how to use the first aid supplies in your kit.

Don’t wait for an emergency to determine how to provide appropriate care.

Our group of resident volunteers provides practical support to community members in unanticipated or temporary times of need.

During the fourth quarter of 2023 we helped residents change smoke alarm batteries, provided transportation to medical appointments (with limitations), and changed the battery in a car key fob.

Changing your smoke alarm batteries may be something that a N2N volunteer can help you with. Give us a call!

Neighbor to Neighbor Network SERM Safety Seminars Mark Johnson offered two seminars to review the new Safety & Emergency Response Manual (SERM) on December 5, 2023 and again on January 18, 2024. Mark discussed the safety and emergency response procedures for the Saguaro Center and the community as a whole. Thank you to all who attended either of the safety seminars.

Marana Park & Recreation is offering a First Aid/CPR/AED class on March 9, click here to go to the registration site and for all class details.

Additionally, please look for the Red Cross First Aid smartphone app. It is really good and handy in the event of an emergency.
