The recent headlines about the energy shortage started some " thoughts about the responsibilities of the DU President and all alumni of the fraternity.

Each year we work to find interested, active DU alumni who will agree to help their own chapter or one nearby as a chapter alumnus Deputy. Deputies are appointed by the President for a one year term (from October to October) concurrent with the term of the President. They serve as the main link between the alumni advisors, counselors, and corporation officers and the International Fraternity At the chapter level, each undergraduate chapter is responsible for electing three alumni counselors to help with advising the officers of the chapter, to provide continuity, management expertise and mature judgment.

In addition, every chapter should have an alumnus Trustee to represent it at the Assembly, the annual graduate legislative body of Delta Upsilon. These alumni: "the Deputy, counselors trustee and the alumni corporation officers make up the cadre of men who do so much to insure high standards of management and continuity.

This year, as in every year, there are some of these dedicated alumni brothers who have given generously, sometimes sacrificiously, of their time and talents and who ask to be replaced. Identification, recruitment and motivation of our alumni most closely involved with DU chapters is one of our highest priorities.

About five years ago, I was a dinner guest along with the wife of a member of the English Parliament, and our host mentioned to her that I was president of a sorority. There was a blank but courteous look on her face, so he quickly explained, "A woman's fraternity."

"Oh, yes," she murmured. And then, after a thoughtful pause, "What is a fraternity?"

As the cliche goes, that was a good question; but the answer was not easy. I had never before been required to explain to a totally uninformed person what a fraternity is. Glib and idealistic phrases about brotherhood

and sisterhood would not have been sufficien t. As I recall, I had to go all the way back to the guilds and the German and Italian student societies before I found an illustration to which she could relate. I explained something of our structure and purpose, and when I finally mentioned the distinctive badges we all wear, her eyes lighted up with recognition.

"Oh, yes" she exclaimed. "I've always wondered what it meant in the cinema when a young man gave a girl his fraternity pin. Now I know!"

That was a tough assignment. So is this one-to discuss the historical relationship between fraternities and the university. Having read volume after volume of the histories of both fraternities and universities, I am led to wonder how either institution managed to survive. But survive we did, and in some cases despite each other.

MTS. Alexande'r E. Jones There is much I must omit. There is also much on which I would like to dwell but can mention only in passing. And I will not belabor the obvious: that without the college, there would be no fraternities. This is decidedly not a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg.

Harvard came first with the American colleges. Phi Beta Kappa came first with the fraternities. There was a gap of 140 years between the founding of Harvard and the founding of Phi Beta Kappa.

Harvard was patterned after the English colleges. Almost all American colleges have been patterned after Harvard. It is a reasonable assumption that Phi Beta Kappa was patterned somewhat after Masonic lodges, and that ensuing fraternities have been patterned somewhat after Phi Beta Kappa.

You notice I have not designated anything as chicken. Or egg.

Harvard copied every English college custom it was possible to copy: the dormitory (or commons) system of living, the classical curriculum, the degree requirements, and the strict student discipline. If Harvard had been patterned after the continental universities, which had no resident students, there might never have been a reason for establishing fraternities.

The rigid discipline of the early American colleges eventually led to the need for fraternities. Most students were quite young, the average age of one freshman class in 1753 being 15 years and five months. One boy was 12. And these youngsters were subjected to a stern and unbending routine of strict rules and regulations for every minute of the 24 hours. Punishment for infractions was harsh and included whippings. The disciplinary excesses of the English schools, so vividly described in David Copperfield, were carried wholesale into the American colleges. Pages and pages of laws for students were enforced at most schools until well after 1800.

The curriculum was just as rigid: Greek, Latin, lots and lots of religion, some mathematics, a little philosophy, and geography. E.veryone took the same subjects. There was no room for originality of thought.

Put these very young students into the bleak and austere dormitory of the day, in inadequately heated rooms with poor light. Feed them meager rations of bad food, burden them with hundreds of rules, punish them, force them into a lock-step curriculum, then supervise them with a police force made up of teachers who watched them like hawks for 24 hours a day-and you have all the elements of a powder keg ready to blow.

And blow it did. School after school had riots, most of which were called "Bread and Butter Rebellions" because they were in protest against bad food. A spectacular outbreak at Har-

vard in 1766 was led by Asa Dunbar, the grandfather of Henry David Thoreau, who rallied the students with the cry, "Behold, our butter stinketh!" Most of the student body of 155 boys was expelled. One suspects, however, that any reason was used as an excuse for a riot. One violent protest at Yale was called the Conic Section Rebellion, and started over a change in the method of teaching mathematics.

Wholesale expulsions were common.

There was no commencement at the University of Alabama in 1837 or at Indiana Asbury (now DePauw) in 1857 because the entire senior classes at each of these institutions were expelled.

Fights and rebellions took place at every school. In fact, the era prior to the Civil War was generally known as "the age of rowdies, riots, and rebellions."

Every freshman class was subjected to extensive hazing, of a degree of brutality which can be described as barbaric. Severe injuries were ~om­ mon, and occasionally a boy was killed. Naturally, the freshmen fought back, and there gradually evolved formalized class battles, some of which raged for days. These class fights were called "rushing," and if the fraternity word "rush" comes from that, I will not be 'surprised. One "rush" at Amherst started over possession of a squirt gun and ended with the students chopping down the stairs in the dormitory and using the timbers as clubs. Relics of these class fights continued into the present century with greased-pole fights and senior cane "grabs."

The result of these class battles was that each class was united against every other class, and all the classes were united against the faculty-the authoritarian figures who enforced the rules. This spirit of camaraderie among the students was a driving force toward the creation of the more dedicated, _more devoted, and more idealistic personal friendships in those smaller groups which would be called fraternities.

Phi Beta Kappa was born in 1776 and so was the United States. Each of these new entities shared common elements: a protest against authoritarianism, and an assertion of rightsthe right of free assembly, free speech, and free association.

In this period of political upheaval and social change, the students were deeply interested in what was going on. It is understandable that they wanted to discuss ideas and events, despite the stern discipline imposed upon them. And since they had no DELTA UPSILON QUARTERLY â&#x20AC;˘

the idea of fraternities was too appealing to be ahandoned opportunity, under the rules of the college, to talk openly and freely together, they decided to meet secretly.

If it was the Revolutionary War in 1776 which helped create Phi Beta Kappa, it was also the Revolutionary War in 1781 which disrupted it. When the British invated the Tidewater Country, Phi Beta Kappa at Williams and Mary disbanded, not to be reestablished there until 185t.

But chapters had already been started at Harvard and Yale, and quickly spread to other schools. Because the structure of the fraternity was so similar to the secret lodges of Freemasonry, anti-Masonic agitation of the 1820s forced Phi Beta Kappa to abandon its secret nature and become the scholastic honorary we know today.

However, the idea of fraternities was too appealing to be abandoned.

Inspired by the example of Phi Beta Kappa, many similar societies developed in the southern schools. In 1812, the first Kappa Alpha began at the University of North Carolina and spread to 21 colleges. Six fraternities were founded at Union College in Schenectady between 1825 and 1847.

A forerunner of the professional fraternities appeared at Transylvania in 1819-Kappa Lambda Society of Aesculapius, affiliating only medical students. Dozens of fraternities were founded that did not survive, but of those established before the Civil War, 37 still exist, although some of them have new names or were absorbed by other groups.

When one considers the statistics -of the colleges which were founded and floundered during the same period, it is not surprising that some of the fraternities did not survive. Of all the colleges founded in America prior to th~ Civil War, 80 per cent no longer eXIst. From about 1790 to 1840, the fervor expended on class fights and rioting over bad food extended to the Literary Societies and Debating Societies.

For over 50 years these societies were the strongest force in American student life. Politics was the chief interest of the general populace, and this enthusiasm was reflected on the campuses in the activities of the societies, which were called by classical names such as Athenian, Philomathe an, and Alexandrian.

Their structure was very like that of our modern fraternities. Again no

chicken or egg imagery will be evoked, because I honestly do not know whether the literary societies patterned themselves after the fraternities, or the fraternities imitated the societies, or both. But society meetings were secret; they had badges, colors, and mottoes; they had meeting halls, some of which were elaborately furnished; they had constitutions and the usual complement of officers. Furthermore their members were elected and th~ rivalry between societies for getting new members was intense. At the beginning of [he school year, committees of students met the trains at the depots to "spike" new students. Advance men were sometimes sent to the preparatory schools to pledge students be.fore they arrived on campus. Does thiS have a familiar ring?

Literary Societies and fraternities flourished side-by-side on many campuses. In fact, it was the bitter rivalry between two literary societies at Hamilton College which led to the founding of Alpha Delta Phi in 1832, in an attempt to establish "a society of higher nature and more comprehensive and better principles."

Another fraternity was founded as a direct result of a heated election campaign in a literary society. At Miami University in Ohio, the brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon could not agree on the candidate for the office of poet in Erodelphian, the campus literary society. So some of the brothers left and formed Sigma Chi. But the Dekes themselves had come into being on a defiant note. They were founded by some brothers at Yale who were not tapped for Alpha Delta Phi or Psi Upsilon in 1844. And 21 years before that, some students at Union College who were not chosen for Phi Beta Kappa formed their own group-Phi Beta Gamma. And so it goes.

What these stories illustrate-aside from human nature-is that the students of the 19th Century felt a deep need to express their ideas and ideals, to express them united in a brotherhood, and to be allowed to make their own decisions.

But most of all, these boys were fighting boredom. Their classes followed a fixed and dull routine. When classes were over, there was nothing to do. The colleges offered no extracurricular activities. Most of the schools were located in small towns with no recreational facilities. So the fraternities provided fun and relaxation, fur-

nished a setting for their talk sessions, and absorbed their interests and energies.

At the same time, the American college of the 19th Century was undergoing a change from the narrow, restricted, secular school of the previous 200 years.

Thomas .Jefferson was partially responsible for this change. He founded the University of Virginia in 1825, and the cornerstone of his academic plan was that the student was to have complete freedom of choice in the lectures he chose to attend. This new idea-later to be called "the elective system"-was adopted, with modifications, by Harvard that same year. In 1826, Amherst picked it up and added modern languages, English, history, political economy, and science to the curriculum. Union College was next, in 1827, and the idea spread-not equally and not everywhere at the same time, and frequently not without struggle. But eventually every colleg'e in America adopted the elective system.

Never underestimate the ingenuity of students Colleges were improving, but not rapidly; and fraternities were increasing, but not without obstacles. Mark Hopkins, president of Williams, wrote to President Humphrey of Amherst to see if there was not something they could do to stop fraternities. (Later on, when Hopkins admitted defeat, he was gracious enough to concede that at least the fraternities had improved the manners of the undergraduates.)

The principal objection to fraternities was their secrecy, and it is ironic that¡ many fraternities went underground to avoid harassment from faculty who were caught up in the great anti-Masonic movement which swept the country in the first part of the 19th Century.

Simply on general principles, the average faculty member opposed any student societies. Part of this feeling was created by the nature of the colleges. Most of them were denominational schools, emphasizing piety and religion and discouraging "free thinking." As late as 1850 there were but a few state schools, none of which was very large. And the old traditions and customs ()f strict supervision died hard in the sectarian institutions.

They died hard in the young state schools, too. For instance, at the University of Michigan in 1849, several

of the regents had been members of the Anti-Masonic party and were therefore against secret societies. With the approval of the faculty, they passed Rule 20, banning fraternities.

The students were not happy about it, and began a counter-attack. Meanwhil,e a snoopy professor-quite in the tradition of the role of policemandetective-had followed a group of students to a log cabin they had built deep in the forest off the Michigan campus. (This, we are told, is the subversive origin of the first fraternity house-the log cabin built by Chi Psi in 1845.) There the professor discovered the boys were holding secret fraternity meetings.

The sinful students were suspended.

These consisted of all the members of Chi Psi, Alpha Delta Phi, and Beta Theta Pi-one-third of the student body. But the families of the students appealed to the state legislature, the legislature upheld the fraternities, and the anti-fraternity faculty resigned.

Never underestimate the ingenuity of students., In a sort of reverse twist on the old admonition, "1ÂŁ you can't lick 'em, join 'em," they began inviting professors to become members of their fraternities, and gradually faculty opposition disappeared. It is a principle that still works.

Opposition to fraternities was somewhat less strident in the smaller schools, most of which were afraid to object too strenuously since they could not afford to lose students to those colleges which would permit fraternities.

It is interesting to compare the founding dates of some of these denominational colleges with the founding dates of their first fraternity chapters. They were not quite simultaneous, but they were very close. For instance, North Western Christian University (now Butler University) opened its doors on November 1, 1855 . Indiana Gamma of Phi Delta Theta was established there on October 22, 1859.

By the time of the Civil War, 500 of these small denominational schools -often called "Hilltop Colleges" had been founded. Only 100 of them survive today. Most of them were poorly located and hard to reach. Few were adequately financed or supported, and many were wiped out in the Panics of 1837 and 1857 . Fires and epidemics closed others. And some were wrecked by internal fights and factional disputes among the congregations which had started them. Southern Indiana communities, for instance, would not support northern Indiana institutions and said they were against "colleges, pianos, and Yankees."

After the Civil War fraternities took over a vital function of student life

The Civil War almost eliminated fraternities. And yet fraternity histories record stories of boys in blue and grey who slipped through the lines at night to meet together in hasty chapter meetings. There are stories, too, of loyal ladies like Lucie Pattie, who kept Sigma Alpha Epsilon's ritual and papers safe through the war.

After the Civil War, colleges and fraternities enjoyed a 50-year boom period, noted in many histories as "The Period of Fraternities and Athletics." The old fraternities reestablished themselves, and new groups started. By 1870 there was one chapter for every 107 students; by 1880, enrollment of students had increased 28 per cent while chapters increased 36 per cent.

Prior to the Civil War, fraternities were a form of protest against authoritarianism. After the Civil War, fraternities took over a vital function of campus life because of a radical change in the colleges: most colleges deliberately ceased providing room and board and supervision for the students.

The reasons for this change are many, but the main one was probably financial. As new state universities started under the Land-Grant Acts and struggled to become established, and as older colleges needed to replace buildings, they found themselves without adequate funds. Salaries and classroom buildings used every available cent. So it was quite easy to embrace a new philosophy of leaving the students to their own devices. Thus grew the tradition of the college boardinghouse, made so famous in literature of the period. A few eastern schools had palatial residence halls constructed by private builders, but it was the fraternites, and later the sororities, which transformed what had primarily been a social group into an organization providing residential facilities. Fraternity row became as much a part of the campus as the lecture hall. Even the campus jargon changed, and the word "house" became a synonym for "fraternity", as in the question, "What house do you belong to?"

Fraternities. and sororities provided idealism and friendshipy and the element 01 quality The ladies probably thought I was never going to get around to men· tioning sororities. Since you all know perfectly well that my own group built the first sorority house in America, this seems a good place to start.

The beginning of Land-Grant schools and an emergence of a new philosophy-that every citizen is entitled to an education-brought about the decision, sometimes grudgingly, that girls should be educated. There had been "female academies" and "female seminaries" since early in the century, but Georgia Female College was the first to be chartered for women, in 1836. This college was the si te of two secret societies, Adel phean and Philomathean, created in 1851 and 1852.

The first coeducational colleges were in the north. In most of the western states, as new universities were founded, women were admitted on an equal basis with the men. This was probably more practical than idealistic. These new colleges needed all the students they could get-even those is skirts.

Coeducation was not received with graciousness and courtesy by many men educators. Their arguments against the concept were ferocious if not very sound. Some said that women could not stand the strain of mental endeavor and would likely go insane if they tried. Others predicted race suicide if women were educated. This argument followed the premise that if a woman is educated, she will not marry. The only conclusion I can reach from this logic is' that these ' early educators believed if a woman had any sense she would not marry.

Stories of the indigni ties suffered by our first coeds are amusing in retrospect, but must have been humiliating to those poor girls who were forced to sit behind elaborate screens in the classrooms so that they would not intrude upon the concentration of the men. Some professors refused to acknowledge their presence, and would never call upon them to recite. The men students openly insulted them, and printed blistering editorials in the school newspapers. At several schools, the faculties, deeming a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree highly inappropriate for a young woman, decided that a more genteel DELTA

term would be "Mistress of Arts" or "Mistress of Science."

The fact that women's grade averages soared high above the men's averages soon laid to rest the contention that academic standards would fall, and the boys were forced to stop being nasty and buckle down to studying.

The admission of women to colleges, of course, led directly to the fouilding of women's fraternities, and it is interesting to note that some of our earliest women's Greek Letter fraternities were founded by the very first coeds admitted to previously allmale institutions. For instance, Indiana Asbury admitted women in 1867, and four of the first coeds created Kappa Alpha Theta in 1870. Syracuse University opened its doors to women in August, 1872. On Septem· ber 18, Alpha Phi was formed, to be followed by Gamma Phi Beta in November of 1874.

These ladies of Alpha Phi admitted they were imitating the men . The early ladies of Kappa Alpha Theta admitted they had requested, and been refused, membership in Phi Gamma Delta. The ladies of many sororities admitted the debt they owed to astute men advisers who helped them organize their first chapters. But all the ladies today wish to point out to their gentlemen brothers that the National Panhellenic Conference is the oldest conference among Greek Letter organizations, beating the National Interfraternity Conference to the punch by seven years.

'When many colleges abandoned the dormitory system, they also abandoned the system of strict faculty dis· cipline. This does not mean the schools substituted a program of guidance and counselling. It simply means they left the students to shift for themselves. As a result, the studerits improvised their own patterns of college living and created a strenuous extracurricular program.

Fraternities rapidly took charge .

They furnished centers of sociability and good times. They arranged for parties and dances and hayrides and picnics. They furnished comfortable housing and a good dining room.

They provided idealism and friendship. And there is another element we cannot ignore if we are being honest, but which is hard for the present-day student to grasp in this age of

equality. There was an element of prestige in the 19th Century fraternity. Our critics would call it "snob appeal." Who you were-that is, who your family was, and what you hadthat is, how wealthy your family was, were very important. Membership, in a fraternity was necessary to gain recognition as being one of a special caste, the socially elite.

College students were already part of a special caste, for higher education in the 19th Century was largely reo served for the children for the well-todo and prominent families. Fewer then 150,000 students were enrolled in our colleges in 1870, representing less than 2 per cent of the population aged 18 to 21.

So this snob appeal was not con· fined exclusively to fraternities. It was characteristic of the age. At schools not having fraternities, student groups flourished which were just as exclusive and which just as thoroughly emphasized social privilege.

Eating clubs at some eastern schools were as limited and restricted in membership as any fraternity, but lacked the controls which most fraternities exercised over their members.

In the period just before World War I, students formed countless clubs concerned with some academic field or with a hobby. There were clubs of every description covering all manner of activities-mandolin clubs, drama clubs, glee clubs, skating clubs, and clubs for such racy pastimes as stamp·collecting.

At the same time, and sharing a place of eminence with the fraternities and clubs, college athletics provided another stage for the campus "big man."

Boat racing was the first intercollegiate competition, sometime in the 1850s. Baseball became popular during the Civil War. Track and field events were scheduled as intercollegiate competition in 1874.

But the name of the game quickly became football. The campus hero was no longer the writer of poetry.

He was captain of the team.

Coaching became a paid profession.

Arid since equipment costs were high, the financial support of alumni played a key role in the athletic program. Sports became commercialized.

A good team attracted spectators, and gate receipts were important. To a,c·

the fraternity system leaps from crisis to crisis commodate larg-er and larger crowds, colleges built larger and larger stadiums, which cost larger and larger sums of money. So the wealthy alumni were called upon again and again, and their influence became increasingly significant.

Because most of these wealthy alumni were members of fraternities, administrators learned to walk softly and think twice before lowering the boom on a fraternity whose alumni members supported the . athletic program.

The expense and brutality of the sport caused some schools to attempt to abolish football. Most of them were about¡ as successful in this as they had been in their attempts to banish fraterni ties.

There are two sides to every picture-and sometimes three or four.

Sports were overemphasized, and to this day remain overemphasized at many schools. But they appeal to the alumni, advertise the school, and create school spirit. And they also create democratic opportunity, which in the past had been denied. One British writer, commenting on American college sports at the turn of the century, observed: "Harvard may secretly rejoice when it can put a winning team on the field whose names suggest the Mayflower, but it would rather put on a team that can beat Yale."

So we had men coming to college whose family origins or wealth meant nothing so long as they could kick or run. And these young men pledged fraternities, because fraternities like glory, too. Sports tore down more than goal posts. They tore down the barriers of class dis~inction.

Originally, fraternities emphasized learning and scholarship. The lamp of !knowledge is onle of the favorite symbols on fraternity crests. But when much of the fraternity emphasis shifted to recreation and housing, fraternities acquired a frivolous reputation and were accused of being "country clubs."

To counteract this contention, a new emphasis was put on scholarship, and consistently through the years since World War I, the scholarship average for members of Greek Letter societies have been above the allstudent averages.

This emphasis on scholarship is in part a tribute to the advisory system which has become characteristic of

Greek life. Interested and devoted alumni and alumnae have filled the void created when colleges turned away from supervising students.

This advisory system extends to chapter management. Young men and young women like to run their own affairs, but . they also want someone to answer, "Here" when they yell, "Help!" The average university can provide no consistent supervision of fraternity business affairs. The typical fraternity considers the advisory board to be an integral part of the chapter.

The change in the campus picture between the Civil War and World War I included one of the great contributions of Greek Letter fraternities -a free-will gift emanating from the nature of fraternities themselves.

Fraternities began to demonstrate their loyalty to the school by supporting campus programs and projects.

Greeks sponsored homecoming celebrations, parents' days, visiting days for high school students. Greeks put on shows and song festivals and carnivals. All this is fun, but it also costs money, and most schools have no budgets for such added attractions.

Then prior to World War I, Greek philanthropy started-quietly at first, with individual chapter efforts to help others. Scholarship grants were established to help students. Chapters fed and clothed children, bought glasses for those with impaired sight, sponsored dental clinics, helped in vaccination efforts, donated blood, and took education to isolated communities. Gradually each national organization zeroed in on specific areas of human need, and today almost every group has a national philanthropy on which it concentrates its efforts.

Again, this is an area where fraternities enhance the college. The publicity and general feeling of approval generated by fund drives to support medical research, to aid crippled children, to provide help for the blind and the deaf, reflect favorably on the school where chapters participate in such philanthropic activities.

Furthermore, fraternities foster the school spirit and school affection which produce a strong corps of supportive alumni and alumnae. Surveys of financial contributions made to alma mater reveal that 80 per cent or more came from members of fraternities. As one Dean said, "Well, who

goes back to the dorm for a class reunion?"

After World War II, when the GI bill flooded our colleges with students, and when draft laws kept enrollments artifically high, the growth of fraternities and sororities was somewhat eclipsed by the great numbers of non-fraternity students who crammed the classrooms. A new breed of campus radical attacked fraternities as a part of the "establishment", or branded them; with the height of opprobrium, as "irrelevant."

The 1960s may appear in future histories as something of a footnote . I suspect that the comments will resemble those concerning the 1760s, when the students rioted over bad food. "Behold, our butter stinketh", and "The Greeks are dying" will sound equally quaint.

Many people say history is a wheel, turning round to repeat the past. It is not; it is a spiral. As it turns, it goes forward.

The American university is in a new crisis at the moment, a crisis o[ government intervention. Colleges are contending with a host of conflicting directives from multitudinous bureaus. They are struggling with finacial problems. They face rising costs and an imminent drop in the collegeage population.

The American fraternity system, like 'Liza crossing the ice, leaps from crisis to crisis. We cannot know what some government bureau will decide is "right" for us, or whether we will have to readjust to still more erosions in our freedom.

As schools grow increasingly impersonal, fraternities grow increasingly personal, absorbing more and more of the responsibility for the moral and social development of the individual.

As schools become unable because of financial problems to provide extracurricular activities for the students, fraternities are filling these needs and supplying the training in leadership and character development which are vital to a strong nation.

The destiny of the university and the destinv of the fraternity are intertwined ir~evocably. We have grown side-by-side. We have not always agreed. We have not always been good to each other, but we have been good for each other.

The story is not one of hero and villain, or right and wrong. Both colleges and fraternities have had their moments of idiocy and their moments of greatness. But like any successful marriage, this one has had more good times than bad, more love than hate, more working together than pulling apart.

Williams, Pacific '63, were featured in a recent national ad of the New York Life Insurance Company, which carried photographs of the 1976 officers of the company's Top Club. Fairley of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was listed as a Top Club regional vice president, and Williams of Stockton, California, the immediate past Top Club president.

David Chambers, Arizona '60, rated front-page coverage in a WALL STREET JOURNAL article about his profession as "headhunter," a nationwide recruiter for company executives. In 1969 Chambers joined a recruiting concern, and two years ago he formed his own company, David Chambers Associates, in New York City. Recruiting companys such as his now . extend their job search to fill middle-management positions. He comments that he receives personal satisfaction in helping people advance in their careers.

Carl J. Wangler, Bowling G"een '66, formerly of Chase Metals Services, has taken the position of vice president controller with thf' Fastener House, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio.

Horace G. Nichol, Carnegie '21, was elected president of the National Interfraternity Foundation at its annual m~eting which was a part of the Bicentennial fraternity celebration at Williamsburg, Virginia, in December.

In 1950 he became a memper of the National Interfraternity Conference, advancing to president in 1956. His long experience with fraternity management started when he was steward of the Carnegie Chapter in 1919. He later became a trustee of the chapter and was a director of the International Fraternity from 1938 to 1951, and served as president from 1948 through 1951. He resides in Darien, Connecticut.

Charles J. Gibson, Jr., Carnegie '67, has been appointed supervising engineer of the Union Switch & Signal Division of WABCO, an AmericanStandard company. In his new position, Gibson will be responsible for criteria concerning product standardization and product longevity. Previously, he was the company's senior engineer in the research and development department. He lives in West Mifflin, a suburb of Pittsburgh.

Robert Shallenberger, Chicago '37, has been promoted to executive vice president of MONY, the position formerly held by the new president of MONY. Mr. Shallenberger joined tbe sales department in January 1954, and has served in various capacities. His postion was that of senior vice presi¡ dent, which he has held since 1972.

He resides in Old Greenwich, Connecticut.

Lee Woltman, Colgate '65, who is currently director of development at Colgate University, recently wrote an article for the Colgate scene, featuring his fraternity brother, Mark van Eeghen, Colgate '74. After his graduation from the university, van Eeghen went to the Oakland Raiders and in three short years has become a rising young star of the National Football League. This season he scored as a 1,OOO-yard rusher, a feat only 11 running backs in the NFL achieved.

While in his senior year at Colgate, he set a school record of 14 touchdowns for a season.

Jack L. Burge, Iowa '61, has been promoted to corporate vice president in charge of merchandising for Richman-Stein, a Cleveland-based division of Richman Brothers Company. His new appointment , gives him merchandizing responsibility for more than 200 Richman and Stein stores throughout the country.

He comes to OSU with over 20 years of marketing, sales, public relations and management experience, his last position being with the Anixter-Patterson .Steel Company in Tulsa, where he also served two terms as Commissioner of Streets and Public Property.

Andre B. Lacy, Denison '61, an Indianapolis industrialist, has accepted an invitation to join the Rockford College Board of Trustees. He is the executive vice president and chief operations officer of Lacy Diversified Industries, Inc., and also serves as president of U,S. Corrugated-Fibre Box Co" a division of Lacy Industries.

For a number of years he has actively participated in the Boy Scouts of America, both locally and statewide.

Allen H. Swartzell, Indiana '47, has resigned as associate director of the American Press Institute in Reston, Virginia, and now is general manager of the Colm'ado Springs Sun. Nevin Meredith, Indiana '65, was recently named to the post of vice president of sales and marketing for the Perk Foods Company. For the past three years he has served as director of marketing for Perk, a Liggett Group Company, and resides in Arlington Heigh ts, Illinois.

Edward M. Strauss, Jr., Iowa State '40, is the new president of the SwissAmerican Chamber of Commerce.

Strauss joined his present firm, Alcoa, as a sales trainee and became vice president, sales, of Alcoa International S. A., Lausanne, in 1970, then president of Alcoa S.A. in 1972. He lives in Cully, Switzerland.

Larry Bewley, Iowa State '67, has been named Midwest Zone Public Affairs Manager for Allstate Insurance.

He will direct lobbying, customer relations, urban affairs programs and media relations for 14 Midwest states.

With offices in Deerfield, he resides at Lake Zurich, Illinois.

Lou Holtz, Kent State '58, was hired as Arkansas' football coach two days after he resigned a similar position with the National Football League's New York Jets. His predecessor, who resigned, said that he was searching for "an offensive·minded coach" and "a stern disciplinarian," and that Holtz's peers described him as "one of the most admired and respected" coaches in the profession.

George Ford, Manitoba '36, the subject of an Associated Press interview, is considered a leading Dickens scholar and this year was chosen as the first American president of the worldwide Dickens Fellowship. Recently he visited New York City for the filming of a commentary on Dickens' "Hard Times," which will appear in May on public TV. Dr. Ford is a professor in the Department of English at the University of Rochester, New York.

J. Victor Rogers, McGill -'55, has been appointed regional vice president, Alberta, Canada, by Nesbitt, Thomson & Co., investment bankers. Also, in November he presented the championship trophy at the Forest City Bowl in London, Ontario, the Canadian Intercollegiate Semi-Final Football Game, his wife and he being the founders of the event. He now res· . sides, in Calgary, Alberta.

Earl V. (Red) Thesken, Miami '30, who retired in 1972 as Miami's dean of educational services, was honored at the 10th Anniversary program of Miami's Middletown campus. The Science-Technology Building was renamed the Earl V. Thesken Hall. One of his major responsibilities before his retirement was the setting up of Miami's branch campuses.

Darold W. Jenkins, Missouri '42, has been elected to the Football Hall of Fame. While playing for Missouri he was named an All-American center.

He is a lawyer and lives at Independence, Missouri.

He resigned from his management consulting practice to specialize in personal tax and financial planning for the charter/purchase of Morgan Out Island sailing yachts and is setting up charter fleets both in the Caribbean and Chesapeake Bay. Virgil R. Carter, Oklahoma State '64, has been appointed vice president of Environmental Planning & Research, Inc., San Francisco, California. He also serves as chairman of the Professional Development Committee, California Council, American Institute of Architects and is a member of the National Committee on Design. He has had essays and drawings published in national architectural magazines and often has qeen guest lecturer and critic at various architectural schools throughout the country.

Meredith S. Livingston, Ohio '61, was graduated from the Squadron Office School at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

Captain Livingston will return (0 Whiteman AFB, Missouri, where he serves as a missile combat crew commander of the Strategic Air Command.

Raymond E. Mason, Jr., Ohio State '41, Major General, U.S. Army Reserve (Retired), of Worthington, Ohio, received the Boy Scouts of America coveted Silver Antelope Award for distinguished service to youth. Geseral Mason is president of Columbus Truck and Equipment Company, Inc., and among other positions helcl by him, he is trustee of the Freedoms Foundation, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and of Franklin College in Columbus, Ohio.

John M. Adams, Ohio State '52, has been endorsed by the Columbus Bar Association for the office of presidentelect of the Ohio State Bar Association. He is a partner in the firm of Porter, Stanley, Platt & Arthur, and has been chairman of the litigation department since January 1975.

Langdon W. Kumler, Pm'due '58, has formed a new brokerage firm of Kumler Options Management, Inc. in Indianapolis. He formerly was vice president of national option sales for Robert W. Baird & Co. Frederick R. Ford, Purdue '58, Purdue's executive' vice president and treasurer, was recently instrumental in helping the university acquire a 65acre site in Perry County, Indiana, for Purdue's lab for forestry students. The federal government and Purdue officials entered into an agreement which allows Purdue to the use of the Branchville Civilian Conservation Center.

Frank R. Burns, Rutgers '49, head coach of Rutgers' undefeated football team, was selected by the Walter Camp Football Foundation at Yale University as "Walter Camp Coach of the Year." He led Rutgers to an unbeaten 11-0 record this past season.

In announcing the selection, the foundation president said that Burns had contributed to the resurgence of college football in the East.

Henry O. Lampe, SWal·thmore '49, has been named assistant vice president of Thomson McKinnon Securities, Inc., a member of the New York Stock Exchange. Lampe has been assistant manager and retail sales coordinator of the firm's Arlington, Virginia office for the last ten years.

He has been active in the securities business for 18 years, is currently a member of the Governor's Advisory Commission on Aging, and is a former member of the Virginia Legislature's House of Delegates .

Donald A. Corrigan, Technology '57, was appointed vice president of research and development for all metallurgical and research actIvItIes of Handy & Harman and its subsidiary companies. Before joining the company in 1973, he was a group leader with the research laboratories of Kennecott Copper Corporation. He lives in West Redding, Connecticut.

Michael Mainer, Texas '69, has set up his medical practice in South Bend, Washington, under the auspices of the National Health Service Corps.

He recently completed his residency in family practice at the University of Oregon Medical School.

Walter A. Fallon, Union '40, has been named chairman of the board of Eastm.an Kodak. Fallon has been Kodak's president since 1972.

The mail has been full of alumni support checks, detailed letters from chapter officers full of plans, asking questions, but most of all evincing real, unbridled enthusiasm for Delta Upsilon.

These tangible evidences of a happier time for fraternities, of plans for chapter revivals, can have the effect of confusing us into believing that the fraternity is the same as it was in some earlier time.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Today's students are sharper, smarter, and the pace on the academic track is definitely quickening.

If you don't believe it, pay a visit to your chapter or one nearby and listen to the conversation, note t.he number of men studying.

Enrollment declines are coming, and in fact they are beginning to hit a number of smaller, private colleges and universities and some larger state institutions. All will be impacted to some degree when the 1980's appear. There are all sorts of scenarios about increasing or declining birthrates, but it is certain to make profound changes in higher education in North America when students decline in numbers.

That's one of the most important reasons why your fraternity has embarked on a "holy crusade" of sorts to get each and every chapter working to exceed the Minimum Chapter Standards.

The Undergraduate Activit.ies Committee, Board of Directors, Convention and Assembly have all indicated full support and assist.ance for any chapter trying to make improvements and to reach for and exceed each of the minimum requirements. At the same time, they have indicated that time is running out on chapters that show no interest in improving, that fail to meet the Minimum Chapter Standards and sap the scarce resources available in both time and money.

Every chapter needs t.o take a hard look at its balance sheet and plan to budget a sizable amount for maintenance, upkeep, and contingencies for emergencies. Chapter house occupancy rates need to be increased and stable, in order to put dollars back into preventative maintenance efforts. Regular, phased increases in both alumni support and undergraduate charges are necessary to keep your chapter and the International Fraternit.y on a competitive footing, giving us the ability to be out in front as opposed to dragging our feet in these fast-changing ~ â&#x20AC;˘

Oklahoma Celebrates 50th Anniversary Plans Alumni Weekend

Benge, Oklahoma· '78, Chapter Relations Secretary In the early 1920's, a group of men on the campus of the University of Oklahoma met and formed Delta Pi, a local fraternity organized with the specific intent of petitioning Delta Upsilon Fraternity for membership. Led by concerned faculty advisors, these outstanding undergraduates realized their goal on January 15, 1927 when a charter was granted, thus creating the Oklahoma Chapter of Delta Upsilon. On January 31, 1977 the men of the Oklahoma Chapter held a celebration of their fifty years of continuous existence, an existence broken only by the Second World War. The celebration began at 3:00 p.m. at the chapter house wi th a champagne reception for returning alumni. We were honored by having the charter members of the original peti tioning chapter to receive brothers and guests. For many brothers, this was their first return to the chapter house in many years and a time to catch up on friendships formed long ago.

Open House was also held at this time for guests from the U niversity communi ty. Guests included University administrators; directors of both the Inter -Fraternity Council and Panhellenic organizations, representatives from other Greek houses on campus, and special guest Dr. George Lynn Cross, president emeritus of the University of Oklahoma.

That evening, a banquet was held in the ballroom of the Oklahoma Memorial Union. After dinner, the program of "Fifty Years of Brotherhood" was presented with speakers John Embry, Paul Massad, and W. A. Butler, Jr. Delta Upsilon Executive Director.

School, was the last president of Delta Pi and the first president of Delta Upsilon on the Norman campus. With anecdotes con· tributed by several brothers, he recreated what it was like to be a Delta U in 1927. Major events were serenades, the purchase of a chapter house, fire, and as always, the meeting of financial obligations. He concluded his remarks by a caution to always look to the future and question that which does not seem right.

Brother Massad, Oklahoma '60, is currently Director of School Relations for the University of Oklahoma and spoke concerning the role of Delta Upsilon on the Norman campus today.

After the program was presented, a band was present for the dancing pleasure of the guests.

The celebration was a huge success on all accounts and a very memorable dav for all concerned with the Oklahoma Chapter. The undergraduate brothers were so impressed that the chapter passed by acclaimation a motion to hold an annual alumni party. We hope in this way to build stronger ties of brotherhood with graduate members and to help them once more become active in the chapter.

The most important lesson learned from the anniversary was that Delta Upsilon is a dynamic, continuing philosophy and not just applicable to the four years of college life. Our brotherhood has spanned fifty years and several generations, yet the bond of fraternity is firm among any given members, regardless of their graduation date. The occasion of our anniversary proved to be an excellent time for the Oklahoma brothers to reconfirm their devotion to the Gold and Blue and realize the truth in the adage "Once a DU, always a DU."

The Play's the Thing Each year as the Bucknell D Us entertain the community, university and benefit charity in a unique 62-year old entertainment, The Demie Play

"The Mouse That Roared" . . . Broadway classics? Yes, indeed, these plays have been produced on Broadway, but they've also been produced and directed for the Bucknell University community by the brothers of the Bucknell Demosthenean Chapter of Delta Upsilon . For the past sixty-two years, the spring semester at Bucknell has meant the annual "Demie Play", looked forward to by brothers, fellow students, members of the faculty and administration, and the Lewisburg, Pennsylvania community alike.

The Bucknell Chapter had its origins as the Demosthenean Club, founded to perfect its members in their forensic and extemporaneous speaking skills, with a campus history that dates back to 1899.

The Demies, as they are known on the Bucknell Campus, founded Delta Sigma fraternity, which, in turn, decided to stage a play for the university community and the Lewisburg area each year.

Thus, in 1915, the "Demie Play" was put on for the first time, and has been performed annually by the chapter (which became affiliated with Delta Upsilon in 1950) . In the early years, the play was performed in a theatre ill downtown Lewisburg, but, as the University grew, the play was moved to the campus itself, and is now presented in the University Theatre, which seats over 500 persons.

For the first fifty-five years, the play was usually serious in na ture, and a true drama . Abont seven years ago, the brotherhood became aware that the play would have to assume a different content and approach in order to continue its popularity among the brotherhood and the campus community. The new approach was in the form of a mnsical, with the brothers producing such plays as "Peter Pan", "Pistol Pete", and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The new format was highly successful, as audiences packed Bucknell's Coleman Theatre for the two-night performance each year.

The 1975 production of "The Wizard of Oz" was very significant for two reasons. First of all, the directors realized that a degree of professionalism was being sacrificed to stake a satirical comedy. Therefore, they decided to incorporate as many of the technological and professional tools as they could. This

included making full use of the University Theatre's lighting mechanism, the sound system, and the stage options. Outside of the theatre, many committees were organized among the brothers to handle the promotion and advertising, the costumes, and the set construction, most of which took place in the fraternity house. With all of these new factors included in the production, the 1975 Demie Play became one of the most highly acclaimed performances ever staged hy the brotherhood.

Secondly, the directors realized that while the production had always been a success, a certain elemen t was still missing-a true purpose. Obviously, the inherent purpose was for the pure enjoyment of the cast and audience alike.

Therefore, the brotherhood decided to charge a 25 cent admission fee per person for each performance. All proceeds were to be donated to the Union County Chapter of the March of Dimes. This charity was selected after a thorough investigation by the brotherhood's Public Relations Chairman and the directors.

Subsequently, a total of $275 was raised by the Demie Play for this worthwhile charity.

Last year, the Demie Play built upon its two new ideas and staged a highly successful musical comedy version of "West Side Story." Turnaway crowds jammed into the University Theatre both nights to enjoy the efforts of an entire brotherhood and pledge class. The donation amount was increased to 50 cents, and, as a result, close to $700 was donated to the Mat'ch of Dimes by our chapter.

The Demie Play is a year long project, as planning for the next play commences within weeks of the staging of the current one. The directors are usually elected in September, and they begin an intensive search for an appropriate play. With the scdpts in their hands by December, the directors go through the original play thoroughly, and form the material for the version to be staged by the brothers. A two night audition period produces a usual cast of from 25 to 30 brothers and pledges. Fot' the next two months, nightly rehearsals take place, until the sum of the individual scenes is transformed into a smooth running play.

While all this is taking place, the Business Manager works with the pledges in securing advertisements for the play programs, and the Technical Director

and the Stage Manager take charge of the set construction . The night before the opening performance, a dress rehearsal is staged, and, finally, the ' culmination of the 12-month effort is evident during the next two evenings, as another Demie Play is presented for the enjoyment of all.

The cost of putting forth a Demie Play usually amount to around $1,000. The advertising defrays about one-half of the total expenses, and the rest is subsidized from the brotherhood budget.

This year's Demie Play, "The Music Man", was successfully staged on March 18th and 19th in the University Theatre.

The Behavior of Law aims at providing a thoroughly scientific framework for the study of law as a social phenomenon.

At its heart are a number of propositions of extreme generality linking variations in law with variations in other aspects of society, such as culture, organization, or stratification. As one of the most general theories ever formulated in sociology, it predicts and explains legal patterns across the world, and supports it propositions with data from anthropology and history as well as sociology.

Brother Black attended the University of Michigan after graduating from Indi ana University. At Michigan he earned an M.A . and a Ph.D. in sociology. He then attended Yale Law School as a postdoctora l fellow for two years and fin a lly accepted an appointment to the sociology facuity at Yale in 1970.
