a f ic e Felician Village Felician Village is a senior living community located on the south side of Manitowoc at 1635 S. 21st St. The organization was started in 1887 by the Felici an Si sters as a home for widows and orphans. Today this 23-acre campus includes living and services for seniors in various life stages—independent, assisted living (two forms), nursing home, and a rehab facility. Also, a vast array of services and education is available in our Dementia Center of Excellence for those needing memory care and for their families. Barb Fricke, director of marketing, has a Bachelor Degree in Business Admi nistration and a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Behavior. “ I worked 30 years at a Barb Fricke local health care facility, the last 10 as the director of marketing,” Fricke said. “ I came to Felician Village 11 years ago as the manager of assisted living, moving into the director of marketing role in 2014. As marketing director, I am responsible for the overall communication message about who is Felician Village to the public, prospective residents, residents, and families. This includes website, advertising, social media, and internal communications.” Asked about her vision of the future at Felici an Village, Fri cke said, “ As the needs and desires of those

65-plus years old change, Felici an Village is committed to adapting to these changes with technology and the amenities that will be desired. Our Board of Directors and Str ategic Management team develop a strategic plan that is adjusted and fine-tuned each year to ensure we are meeting our long-range goals.” Fri cke said she hears positive input about the facility. “ As I give tours around our campus, I alw ays hear people who are amazed at the homelike feel of our buildings,” she said. “Many people say they can’t believe this is

‘an old folk’s home.’ People who have only visited nursing homes in the past are impressed with Felician Village and find all the opportunities and choices available to be amazing.” Some of the comments heard have been:

“We have been so impressed and comforted by the care, concern, and sweetness shown to mom (and other residents) from the time she moved in.” “ The staff was so helpful to my sister and me. They would always bend over backwards for mom and our family, always trying to make things easier for us, and most importantly, trying so hard to make sure mom’s days were as bright as possible.” “I truly feel a sense of relief in knowing that Mom is ‘safe’ and assured that she is maximizing her abilities.”

When she is not working, Fri cke said she enjoys traveling and planning active vacations. “My goal is to visit all 50 states; I have nine that I haven’t been to yet. Going on vacation with my grown children and their families and introducing my grandchildren to national parks is something we all enjoy. I also spend time with my 85-year-old dad who is living in his own home yet. In addition, I enjoy reading, camping, hiking, playing cards, and spending time with my siblings.” See our ad on page 34

Peggy Jes e Fox’s Piggly Wiggly

Peggy Jeske’s career in the grocery business dates back 1971 at the Red Owl Store Manitowoc. I worked there until 1988 when the chain closed, then came to Larry’ s Piggly Wiggly in 1989.

When Bob and Kris Fox purchased January 2011, all the employees were able to continue with the company, and Jeske remained on staff. She currently serves as Store Director/H R coordinator for three Fox Piggly Wiggly stores. (Manitowoc, Two Rivers and Plymouth). “ I have worked in all departments, checking, meat, produce, deli, bakery. I started and ran a postal station, video and liquor. Over the years I also saw a lot of changes and it was fun to be a part of running those departments. I worked in the front office, bookkeeping, as well Peggy Jeske as running the customer service area. I advanced to assistant manager, focusing on the grocery area (including dairy, frozen food, HBC and GM ). We have approx. 95 employees. We have a large selection of deli meals and foods, bakery, produce, a meat department featuring Certified Angus Beef, a full liquor department, and offer money orders and a full postal substation in our customer service office.

“We carry many ‘made is Wisconsin’ items trying to sell products focusing on our local distributors. We offer numerous speciality items to make sure to carry a large variety of products. We offer great customer service from numerous ‘long time’ employees, one of the few stores to still offer ‘carrying out’ groceries to the customers car.” “ Fox’ s is a GR EAT place to work and we look at ourselves as Family. I believ e it will continue to be a success as we are still on the smaller size which makes us a different entity than the large box stores. Bob and Kris are ‘hometown owners’ and are involved at every level and definitely look at making sure their employees are well taken care of,” Jeske said.

“We look at doing many things for the community such as ‘eggstravaganza’ and the Pig to Pig Walk. Al l the proceeds are donated to non-profit organizations. Jeske said customers often comment that they feel we are a family and they feel part of it. “Most of us have been together for many years and when you have that kind of relationship with employees it carries over to our customers. They come back because we recognize them and they are treated like family,” she said.

Jeske takes great pride in her work and enjoys her job. ” I love the people I inter act with on a daily basis and being in the business as long as I have been, you tend to make many lifelong friends. I am happiest when I am with my family. They are my pride and joy. Peggy has been married to Jeff for 43 years. They actually met at the old Red Owl store. The Jeskes have 2 Chil dren,

Brenda (Ben Schmidt) and Aaron (Melissa) Jeske. “We have been blessed with 5 grandchildren whom are our pride and joy. Brody, Harper, Harlow, Jordan and Theodor e. Jeff and I lo ve to golf and have taken numerous trips to do just that. We enjoy going to our cottage fishing and taking long boat rides across the lake.

“We like spending time with friends and family. I also have the pleasure of working with my son and being able to share with him my knowledge of the business.” See our ad on page 35

Lau ie fettin g T&LTactical Laurie Fettig is the “L” in T&L Tactical , a full gun shop and range in the Newton/ M anitowoc area. T&L Tactical has been in business since 2013. “We started off as a little Mom & Pop hobby shop but within a few months had to hire 2 employees just to keep up with demand. In 2017 our banker called and encouraged us to purchase a building just off the highway and said it would be a perfect spot for the indoor range we were hoping for. By March 2018 we were moved into our new location and the range opened up 7 weeks later in April 2018. We currently have 6 fulltime staff members that can help you select the perfect firearm or accessory, give you instruction on the range or answer your questions.

T&L really focuses on being a comfortable place for seasoned shooters but also inviting to new shooters and women. We offer a variety of classes, private instruction, full-service gun shop and indoor shooting range.” As a managing member, owner of T&L Tactical , Fetti g said her business was really born out of necessity.

“The firearm industry is a male dominated industry. Being a female who loves the shooting sports, it was difficult going to stores and making a purchase. Often ti mes, male clerks were more interested in selling my husband a gun than myself. Sal espeople didn’t take me seriously, didn’t listen nor provided the expertise I was looking for. When I talked to my friends, they all said the same thing,” she said. “So that’s when I decided to move forward with opening. I haven’t looked back since. We continue to grow, adding a range and a much bigger location in 2018. I have been able to really hire a great team Laurie Fetting of staff as well! It was important that I not only had employees that loved to shoot but really like helping people. I really want people to notice a difference when they come into the shop. We want everyone to feel welcomed regardless of their shooting experience. Rachel my store manager and myself have gone on to become NRA certified instructors. We teach a wide variety of classes that are booked several months in advance. Al l our staff are certified Range Safety Officers, CPR certified and Stop the Bleed Certified. Fetti g added, “We want all our customers to feel safe while on the range.” Fetti g said T&L Tactical looks forward to expanding its classes, offerings on the range and product lines based on customer feedback. “We want to stay relevant and will continue to look at new products to ensure we stay on the cutting edge,” she added. Some of the customer comments regarding T&L Tactical can be found on the company’s social media platforms. Here are a few — “Attractive facility. Nice selection. Incredibly helpful and courteous staff provided a wonderful experience for a first time purchaser, answered every question I had and more. Couldn’t be happier. A+ +.” — “Very nice facility. Indoor r ange was clean, warm, and had great targets. Staf f was friendly, prices reasonable. Will definitely be coming back.” — “ Gr eat range and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Good selection of firearms and an hour in their range is better than golf any day.” — “ One of the nicest indoor ranges that I have used: well lit, extremely well ventilated, and cool target system on the tactical range. Employees were very friendly as well.” Fetti g acknowledges that owning a business doesn’t leave me much time for hobbies. However, she is an active grandma who loves to spend time with her grandbabies. “ I feel blessed to be able to spend a few days a week with them. My dear husband lets me have a vacation every three years so I look forward to that time off to get away and unwind,” she noted. See our ad below

Keto diet paves way for success

(StatePoint) Chances are you’ve heard of the keto diet. Its popularity has soared in recent years, adding it to the list of diets many people try. The keto diet is founded on the belief that when your body is in a state of nutritional ketosis -- a metabolic state in which fat provides most of the fuel for the body -- you will lose weight. But what if you could take a less drastic approach? In hi s newest book, “ The Keto- Friendly South Beach Diet,” world-renowned cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston explains that you can follow a low-carb, highfat, quality-protein ketofriendly diet without having to reach and sustain a state of ketosis -- and still reap the weight loss benefits. Here is how this approach can set you up for weight loss success:

• It Follows Proven Principles: Foll owing the proven principles of the lowcarb/good-carb, good-fat, healthy-protein approach of the original South Beach Diet, the keto-friendly version layers in sciencebacked elements of the keto diet’s higher fat intake, ultimately allowing for more variety in the diet than strict keto in the form of nutrientdense carb choices like non-starchy vegetables and beans.

• It Takes You into Fat Burning Mode: “When a person eats too much sugar or quickly digestible carbs, their insulin levels increase. If this happens over time, the body responds by going into fat storage mode, making it very difficult to burn fat and lose weight,” says Dr. Agatston. The keto-friendly approach shifts your body from “fat storage mode” into “fat burning mode,” leading to weight loss.

• It’s Flexible: Trying to maintain any strict diet for the long-term often makes people stop dieting and regain weight. Because of the highly satisfying foods and the lack of required adherence to specific ketone levels, the KetoFri endly South B each Diet allows for a variety in food choices, which may be more sustainable over time compared to stricter keto diets.

• It Offers Structure: For those looking for a bit more

structure, South B each Diet offers a keto-friendly version of their meal delivery plan that comes with fully prepped chef-inspired foods that nourish and satisfy. “ Structur e can make the keto-friendly lifestyle more approachable,” says Courtney Mc Cormi ck, registered dietitian and manager of Cli nical Research & Nutrition for South Beach Diet. For mor e keto-friendly insights and keto-friendly recipes, visit palm. southbeachdiet.com.

Remember, the first step to losing weight is finding a plan that works for you. A keto-friendly diet can set you up for success in a way that’s friendly, flexible and achievable. 
