CAREER SPOTLIGHT
CHARMI PATEL
Charmi Patel joined Delta Kappa Delta as Sxster Agni in our Epsilon Chapter during her undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned her BS in Astronomy and Physics. From day one, she brought the spirit of sxsterhood and scholarship to every endeavor whether mentoring new transfer students as an Illini Transfer Ambassador or analyzing asteroid fluxes in the Filippini Lab.
Pioneering Ignorosphere Research
Now a PhD candidate in Physics at UMass Lowell, Charmi tackles one of the atmosphere’s greatest mysteries: the “ignorosphere,” the scarcely studied layer between 50 km and 100 km altitude In January 2025 she traveled above the Arctic Circle to Kiruna, Sweden, where she installed the HiT&MiS (High Throughput & Multi Slit Imaging Spectrograph) on a rooftop observatory. This four-slit spectrograph, developed by UML’s Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, will monitor hydroxyl emissions and auroral dynamics around the clock data crucial for understanding space weather’s impact on climate, communications, and power grids.
Undergraduate Foundations & Instrumentation Skills
Charmi’s hands-on instrumentation expertise blossomed at UIL with roles in public relations communications and undergraduate research assembling microwave/RF stages and writing data-analysis code At UML, she deepened those skills reconfiguring HiT&MiS’s optics with Zemax, fine-tuning it to detect atmospheric hydroxyl radicals, and supporting rocket launches from Sweden’s Esrange Space Center.
Looking Ahead
Supported by a Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium fellowship, Charmi is now immersed in data analysis writing Python and Rust pipelines to decode spectral signatures. Her work exemplifies DKD’s pillars of scholarship, leadership, and service. We can’t wait to see how Sxster Agni’s discoveries in the ignorosphere illuminate not only the skies above but also the path for future Delta Kappa Delta engineers and scientists
