Delta student Kaitlin Brown, 19, who is going into accounting and sports management thinks that professors are too easy on students when it comes to plagiarism and the consequences of doing so.

“I don’t think sourcing is that hard… you’re supposed to learn that in high school,” she says. She adds, “Some people, they’re smart enough to know and just don’t care.”

Matthew Hewitt, 21, is a computer programming student at Delta and has a different point of view. He thinks part of the reason students plagiarize so much is because they aren’t taught how to cite properly.

“You’d think the teachers would go through how to source papers thoroughly,” he says.

One way that faculty at Delta are trying to keep better tabs on plagiarism is to have students submit papers on turnitin.com, a site that checks the paper with familiarity to journals, articles and other resources.

Alexander has her students submit all papers via TurnItIn. Brandow feels programs like this are incredibly helpful to faculty.

“I don’t think any one person, no matter what degree they have, can be familiar with every article ever written so that technology will help [instructors] keep the students honest,” he says.

While TurnItIn helps faculty monitor plagiarism, Delta College will soon be implementing a new way for faculty to report academic dishonesty when it does occur so the college can keep better record of it.

Rather than e-mailing the Division Chair when an instructor discovers a situation of academic dishonesty, they will now submit an electronic form. That form will be stored in a central repository.

“We have the ability then to

The plan is for this new process for reporting academic dishonesty to go into effect at the start of the academic year; however, Delta College the new process.

“What we want is the best outcome for our faculty and for our students and we want to try to help students grow and understand why it’s important that they do their own work,” says Peruski.

As the semester begins, and instructors go through the course syllabus with their new class, it seems every professor at Delta College has a story to tell about a student who cheated on a test or plagiarized a paper. Typically, the story ends with the student being dropped from the class or receiving a zero on the assignment.

According to Peruski, no student at Delta has ever been expelled or dropped from a class due to academic dishonesty. As far as handing out a zero on the assignment, not every professor can be one of the 35 who reported a case. Some professors are either the professor is just saying that to scare the students or likely didn’t follow Delta’s policy.

Capitalism: You get what you pay for. Or at least, you expect to get close. More and more however, for video game software, you’re only getting what devel-

opers give you.

Enough is enough. It is time to start the conversation: The FCC, or any regulatory body, needs to set mandatory minimum standards for software.

With all regulation, it is about consumer protection. We have been made to look naïve and desperate for intellectual properties (IPs) by developers. The biggest offender in recent history has been Ubisoft Montreal and their IP Assassin’s Creed Unity.

Released only one-year after it’s predecessor, Unity was made to be streamlined software. So streamlined that a “day one” update was issued the game. Why didn’t a multi-million dollar developer have the resources to debug (an industry term for error-checking) a game of this magnitude?

Worse, the day one fixes weren’t enough and the game was rendered unplayable, with refunds ers. Thankfully though, the next patch players could spend real world money for in-game items. Players could they already paid too much money for.

Where is the integrity? Subscription based games rely on offering bug-free and well-developed media. Is this because the user is required to continuously pay to play?

Again, Unity had no public gaming demonstration. How was anyone supposed to know? Ubisoft was later found to be suppressing critical reviews by establishing embargoes that wouldn’t allow writers to post a review until 12 hours after launch. It is normal procedure for a game to be given a review weeks before launch.

The issue here is that there was no open demonstration, no public beta testing. Once Ubisoft met their pre-order quota, they had no incentive to hone Unity. It was already paid for; they already made their money back. The next Assassin’s Creed was already developed (and was released the same day as Unity).

Juxtapose this to the Polish developer CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The four-year development time allowed for a release that was met roughly 300 hours of nearly bug-free gameplay--Not to mention free downloadable content being distributed periodically.

The kicker? Both of these games fall under the same manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $60.

What kind of experience should be expected from a $60 investment?

Presentation is everything, and a developer can, and should, take their time creating a near perfect piece of art. At the end of day, it is the developer that sets the release date.

As a consumer, did you get the full product? Did you feel that a corporation truly released this software for you, the fan? Or are they cashing in on your fandom?

The FCC and the MSRP must product, and enforce it. There needs to be regulation so that developers cannot give you logs instead of a cabin.

I personally decided to purchase a second Jam Plus speaker just to see how well the stereo sound feature worked. I was able to pair both speakers to my phone after setting one speaker to L [left] and the other to R [right]. I turned them both up to maximum volume, and set one in my living room and the other in the kitchen, while I washed dishes and with sound. For such a tiny unit that’s saying a lot.

The Jam Plus only costs $49.99 (or if you shop around around on sites like Amazon you may be able to get it for less). The audience is abuzz with anticipation, speaking in murmurs as they wait for the performance of “Godspell” at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bay City to begin.

Backstage cast members made up of pastors, baristas and other everyday people from the tri-cities hurry to prepare for the night. They apply makeup, warm up their voices and place their props to ensure a smooth performance.

Carly Peil, 19, of Auburn, Mich. has performed with several theater organizations since the beginning of her theater career at age 9. She has even performed in previous “Godspell” shows throughout the years, but pre-show jitters still get to her.

As the places are called and the lights go down, the audience and cast embark upon a magical trip back to biblical times as the parables and ministry of Jesus Christ is brought to life.

“There is a trend of community theaters failing. Some communities see the value and those theaters continue to thrive,” said Tommy Wedge, instructor of theater at Saginaw Valley State University, who has directed many productions at Pit and Balcony.

These theaters have served as launching pads for actors such as Brian D’ Arcy James of Saginaw. He is currently starring in the Broadway show, “Something Rotten.” As a young person, D’

Everyone thinks politics are combative and boring, but then constantly complain about the roads and the state of our local mall without ever realizing that things are connected.

Politics aren’t just about elections, legislatures and ideology; at the end of the day it’s a conversation about the public good.

This isn’t the country where you’re free to pursue your dreams (if it ever was); this is the country where (most often) children of color are shot in the streets and called thugs on national television. We’ve embraced a culture that celebrates apathy and glorifies insanity and it’s time for everyone to start realizing that things aren’t okay. It isn’t right

that a mass shooting happens almost every day without even showing up on the nightly news.

It isn’t right that people still go bankrupt to save their lives. It isn’t right that so many young people only feel hope with a needle.

It isn’t good enough to just sit behind your computer coming up with new hashtags; social change has never been spread in just 140 characters. Change requires action and struggle. I’m not asking anyone to be a Republican or Democrat; I’m begging everyone to get involved. Nothing is ever going to change if we don’t start speaking out and reaching for like-minded voices. A movement isn’t possible with just one person but great things can happen with just two people.

A detail that I did not particularly like was the way women were used as objects, even when they were inf luential to N WA’s success. In their selfproclaimed story, they did not portray women as equals. I realize

that the film is about NWA, not their significant others. However, they should have fleshed out the women more; it doesn’t take much time to make a woman a human as opposed to an object or plot device.

Overall, I really enjoyed the rap since driving home from the theater. I suggest this to anyone who loves music because this story is worth seeing.

The Five Most Influential Films Of This Critic’s Imagination To put myself in a sentence, I love cinema. Anything can be considered art but I find that every movie can have something to offer. Movies have put me in awe, revitalized my love for the art, brought me to a new perspective or were just plain fun. These are the five movies that have cemented that love. DISTRICT 9 (2009)

The topics the movie touches on are xenophobia/ racism, apartheid/segregation and government use of private corporations (military or otherwise). The evolution (literal and metaphorical) of the protagonist Wikus van de Merwe throughout the film is one of it’s best aspects. The mockumentary style from the film was lifted right from Neil Blomkamp’s indie film, “Alive in Johannesburg.” The film influences the viewer on what to think of the prawns with the interviews and the shots they choose when depicting them. The name “prawn” itself is a derogatory term created by humans in the film. Special effects are also top notch and director Neil Blomkamp and Weta studios keep upping themselves visually with every project.

On the movie of “Gojira” itself: it is the heaviest tonally of the entire series. The themes come from a sensitive time and the movie gives some harrowing scenes. Looking back the black and white adds to that effect greatly.

The raw and heartfelt emotion expressed shows how a band’s writing and delivery can affect another.

The Hotelier’s “Home, Like Noplace Is There” has exceeded right in. Providing nine powerful tracks that rip through subjects like gender identity and tragic loss, The Hotelier has created something more than just another record; this is a breakthrough album and they have something to say.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1967)

One of my favorite movies of all time, but this would be the hardest movie on this list for me to actually suggest. The pacing of this western film pace is a slow burn. It comes from a time when movies were more drawn out. The pace and direction are among the best qualities of the film.

Sergio Leone constantly builds tension. While the building of tension has a better snap moment in “Once DARK KNIGHT (2008) Upon a Time in the West,” the dynamic between the three central characters is what really brings the movie First and foremost Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker is astounding. I would have my mind together. Enio Morricone’s score is iconic and awesome wiped just to see it for the first time all over again. as is the rest of the “Man with No Name” trilogy.

The opening sequence itself is its own mini movie, leading up to the real introduction of the Joker.

Simply throwing addicts into prison disenfranchises them, and once they are thrown back into the world they do not have the skills to complete. They are forced to return to the people they knew, the ones who may have enabled the addiction that led them into the prison system to begin with.

Relapsing is fairly common, and all addicts should have access to a rehabilitation program. The focus of drug control should be on providing treatment for those who are struggling with addiction, not punishing them.

Over the summer, I was able to start and complete my first short film.

We had a couple of months to pull off a short -

We secured our actors and location -- which was the college President’s house -- was set. It was then time to make “movie magic” I was nervous. wears off and you’re looking reality right in its face – that reality being you either forget a shot, forget to hit record on the audio recorder, or failed to use the clapboard to match up the sound and takes. Oops. That’s when the nail biting kicked in and the pressure was on. Much like every other human on earth, when things work out too easy, we become so quick to forget about everything else because stars align. and we received praise from our peers and the President of the college. The more I watch it, the more I wish I had a time machine to go back and relieve some of those moments again (even the six or seven hours in a hot bedroom checking audio). The more I wish I could do a little better of a job as a producer.

I’m happy and proud of the work that everyone put in on the with some very talented people and I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. I thank them for their is challenging, but if you’re working with people who have the same goals, it makes it a better pill to swallow at the end of the day.
