Tuesday Aug. 28 Public Safety received a complaint that an unknown person had taken a debit card from the victim’s purse. The debit card was used for two purchases in the Saginaw area before it was deactivated.

Tuesday Aug. 28 Public Safety took a complaint from a student regarding an indecent exposure in the west parking lot. Suspect was described as “a male with a beard.”

The suspect vehicle was described as a red Jeep with a spare tire on the back. The spare tire had a “Jeep” tire cover on it. The suspect left in an unknown direction.

Tuesday Sept. 4 Public Safety took a complaint of theft from a coin-operated machine.

Vending machines in the women’s bathroom were opened and change was removed from within them.

Public Safety responded to a hit-and-run traffic crash in the parking lot and an incident of a car running off the roadway on Hotchkiss Drive. Public Safety also responded to four medical and injury reports.

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The opioid epidemic continues to affect millions of people, both on the national level and close to home. At the same time, there is hope provided by a passionate group who wish to put an end to the epidemic.

Families Against Narcotics (FAN) is an organization aiming to help people struggling with addiction, mainly through their initiative called Hope Not Handcuffs. FAN officially launched in the Great Lakes Bay Region July 24 this year to aid Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties. Several local police departments joined the program, including the Saginaw Township Police Department, the Midland Police Department and the Bay City Department of Public Safety.

During FAN’s regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, Sept. 13, Lori Ziolkowski, an associate professor at Delta College who serves as the new chapter’s vice president, remarked on the impact that Hope Not Handcuffs has already made in the community in less than two months. She also announced that Delta College Public Safety and Saginaw Valley State University are expected to join the program by the end of the month.

“The police understand what a valuable program this is,” Ziolkowski said at the meeting. “We were really nervous starting this, because we kept fearing that we wouldn’t have beds for people, and that we wouldn’t be able to get people into treatment. [...] So far, our longest wait time has been two days.”

Hope Not Handcuffs uses volunteers — called “angels” — who are on call to help addicts get the treatment they need.

An individual facing addiction can go to a participating police department to get help or fill out an online form on the Hope Not Handcuffs page. Currently, the Great Lakes Bay chapter has more than 150 trained angels; additionally, more than 170 are looking to be trained.

“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect,” says Ziolkowski. “We kind of launched the program and held our breath, hoping that somebody would come in. When I checked with [...] FAN headquarters, [they told us,] ‘This is great.’ I’m so thankful for it.”

So far, 14 people have gotten help through Hope Not Handcuffs in the Great Lakes Bay Region chapter since its launch. A total of 1,700 people have gotten help across all 21 of its locations in Michigan and North Carolina.

The Sept. 13 meeting celebrated Recovery Month by allowing attendees to come forward and share their stories about addiction and recovery. Recovering addicts as well as friends and family of recovering addicts were all present at the meeting.

“Recovery is for the entire family,” said Ziolkowski. “Everyone goes through it when someone is struggling.”

Nick Kastros, a recovering addict and founder of clothing brand Open Discussion (O. D.) Apparel, shared his story about how personal experiences with drug dependence inspired him to start the brand, which revolves around revitalizing the discussion about addiction.

“The apparel is the vehicle to our message,” remarked Kastros. “This is just my way of making a difference.”

In the effort of making that difference, 10 percent of proceeds from the opendiscussionapparel.com store go toward supplying Narcan — a lifesaving emergency treatment to overdoses — to areas in the state that are most affected by the opioid epidemic. Kastros also plugged his Indiegogo fundraising campaign for the brand, with a total goal of $2,500.

Sunday, Oct. 2 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

In addition, FAN meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at Delta College’s main campus. The next meeting will be Oct. 11, and will address the topic of traumatic events and how they affect addiction.

The Bay City Record Convention held its second show of the year Sept. 15, 2018 at Amvets Post 22 in Essexville.

Canadian rock band The Guess Who, perhaps most famous for the song “American Woman” but also responsible for many more classic radio favorites, have just rolled out “The Future IS What It Used To Be.” This is officially the band’s first full length studio album since “Lonely One” from 1995. I am a big fan of The Guess Who because of the highly talented musicians, uniquely artistic songwriting, Burton Cummings’ amazing vocals and their interesting and very underrated back catalog of music. Therefore, I would be quite excited for this new release.

Except I’m not.

That is because, in the current band itself, there are no members from any of the classic 1965-1975 lineups aside from drummer Gary Peterson. No Burton Cummings, no Randy Bachman, no Bill Wallace, no Donnie McDougall — each non-drummer featured in this new album is nowhere to be found in classics like “American Woman,” “No Time,” “No Sugar Tonight,” “Share the

The small building, located across from the Meijer on Pine Street, always packs up when the Record Convention is underway, and this one was no exception.

Vendors from all over the state of Michigan — including one from as far north as Marquette — had tables set up with big boxes of new and used vinyl records for sale. With more than 30 vendors overall, shoppers flocked to fill their shopping bags with records and CDs. Sponsored by Electric Kitsch (Bay City), Radio Wasteland Records (Midland), Bellsmith Graphic Design (Bay City), Bags Unlimited Inc. and the Michigan Record Club, the Bay

Land” or “Clap for the Wolfman.” Original bassist Jim Kale is credited with a guest appearance, but that’s it.

As such, you can expect a completely different sound with “The Future IS What It Used To Be.” But at least the new players aren’t a bunch of nobodies. New lead singer Derek Sharp (D#) has worked with several musicians such as Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) and Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow). Guitarist Will Evankovich recently worked with Styx on several occasions, including cowriting and production of their latest studio album “The Mission.” Bassist Rudy Sarzo played with Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot and other wellknown rock bands. And speaking of Styx, their guitarist Tommy Shaw also guest stars on this new album, which to me is an attractive perk as I am also a fan of Styx.

So I decided to give this album a fair chance. “Playin’ On the Radio” was the first single to be released from the album, back in August. It sounds good. But does it sound like The Guess Who? Not really. It has a nostalgic lyrical theme to it (“I never saw myself / 40 years, all older. / The years go by / like yesterday, I still remember / playin’ on the radio.”) but it just sounds cheesy — like it isn’t coming from a band that isn’t The Guess Who that most people from the ‘70s would remember.

There are some tracks that take cues from the classic era, though. “Good Girl,” for instance, features a flute solo! Burton Cummings helped define certain Guess Who songs with his flute playing (see “Undun”), so this helps give the album the identity it would need. The song also faintly reminds me of the 1974 hit “Star Baby.” “In America” is also faintly similar to “Star Baby” and “Bus Rider” (1970) with an old fashioned rock-n-roll vibe.

The rest of the album, however, isn’t very similar

City Record Convention showed no signs of slowing down after its 10-year run. In fact, host Raymond Pounds had previously explored the possibility of finding a bigger venue to accommodate high attendance but has decided not to due to the high cost, and his overall preference of Amvets Post 22 as a location.

Aside from record shopping, there were also giveaways of record albums, supplies, gift certificates and a turntable for shoppers who were willing to stick around for the raffle drawings.

Did you miss the Record Convention? The show returns Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 at the same location, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a $10 admission fee during the first hour; from 10 a.m. onwards, admittance goes down to $1 per individual.

to the old band at all. Not to say that the other songs are bad. “Haunted” is a nice rock ballad that is built around a series of piano chords; the whole song has kind of an Elton John-esque sound, especially in the first verse. “Baby’s Come Around” is one of the album’s tracks co-written with Styx’s Tommy Shaw, which I think helps it out a lot. It doesn’t sound like The Guess Who, but it’s still another great ballad.

Throughout the album’s entirety there are nice guitar solos, tight vocal harmonies and overall acceptable production quality. Really, the only thing that is wrong with the album is that it’s being sold as an album by The Guess Who. The one original member, Gary Peterson, is a drummer, so that doesn’t make a difference in how the band sounds today.

For me, the lack of Burton Cummings’ iconic lead vocals makes “The Future IS What It Used To Be” a tough sell. Really, just featuring another classic member as a guest musician (Randy Bachman, perhaps) would have done a world of good here.

My overall rating is 3 out of 5 stars. I would give it an extra star if the band had a different name. Honestly, you’re better off tracking down a good, used copy of a classic The Guess Who LP like “American Woman,” “Share the Land” or “Rockin’,” as you’ll be getting an infinitely more authentic listening experience.

Annual Hell’s Half Mile film and music festival returns to Bay City Zach Parfeniuk • Reporter

From Sept. 27 to Sept. 30 in Bay City, Hell’s Half Mile will cover four whole days of original indie films and concerts from artists coming from all around Michigan and from out of state, providing, for those who attend, a break from their schedule to simply enjoy the entertainment.

In an age of streaming services like (Spotify and Netflix), one can watch a breadth of movies at a whim from their own bed, or listen to music wherever they are, whatever they’re doing. Going to movie theatres, film festivals or concerts is slowly being seen as more of a chore compared to the comfort of experiencing all of that media from your own home. While this may be true, it removes the social aspect of going to a movie or partying at a concert. Whether it be watching a romantic comedy or joining a mosh pit in the heat of your favorite song, the feel of going out and hearing the bass of surround sound speakers or seeing a film with friends on the big screen sprawled out in front of you can’t be replicated by streaming.

The films shown at Hell’s Half Mile are notable for the fact that they are made outside of any major production studios.

There’s no “Incredibles 2” or “Fast and the Furious” here. Each film, whether a short or a full feature, will give attendees a show that they wouldn’t be able to see at a normal theatre. “Best of All Worlds,” a narrative feature directed by Adrian Goiginger, is a film centered around a seven-year-old boy, Adrian, and his

caring mother, Helga. Their trials with addiction, social workers and drug dealers expose the blotted gray features of our own reality. Another feature, “Summer of 84” is as true to the title as it sounds.

Teenage boys delivering papers while fantasizing about the girl next door, right? Well soon, other boys in the town go missing without a trace, and the only lead given the boys’ neighbor, a police officer, who they think has something to do with it. There are dozens of other films alongside these ones, ranging from comedy to drama to documentary, and coming to see these movies offers support to independent filmmakers looking to rise up in the industry; plus, isn’t it nice to see a new idea instead of the endless reboots and sequels coming out of Hollywood?

For those who aren’t attached to cinema Hell’s Half Mile, as mentioned above, is also a music festival with artists grabbed from all sorts of genres. From the bizarre, funkadelic mesh of noire ‘80’s synth pop that the Cincinnati band Moonbeau exudes, to ethereal melodies streamlined by Anna Burch, a Detroit resident. Other artists include Chicago native Emily Blue and her synthetically woven melodies that create a spectacle of bubblegum pop, and Mobley, a one man R&B-rock artist hailed for his socially conscious, but still fun, songs. There’s something there for everyone: emo, rock, pop, techno, indie and more. If there’s still doubt, some artists have songs featured on the Hell’s Half Mile website under

their own page (though searching the music up online would most likely yield the same result). Most of these concerts take place around 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. There are also opening and closing parties that attendees are invited to, provided they have a day pass.

Whether coming for one hour or all four days of Hell’s Half Mile, the shows, the parties and general meet-and-greet sessions available at the festival make it worthwhile for anyone looking to break

out of normality, do something exciting or just simply have a good time. Day passes are available online at the Hell’s Half Mile website, or at the festival itself.

Tickets to one specific concert or one specific movie are also an option for online and in-person purchases. Schedule listings and more details on specific movies, artists, or other events are also available on the website, hhmfest.com.

On the foggy morning of Sept.

15, a crowd of enthusiastic people in white shirts flocked to the parking lot adjacent to Delta Drive for the second annual Delta College 5k Color Run. This event is facilitated by the college’s Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA) club.

Both Abbie Brown, president of the PTA club, and Chris Hausbeck, club adviser, were present at the event, making sure everything went according to plan.

Brown understands the importance of physical activity plans in a healthy lifestyle and sees this event as a fun way to exercise.

“We have a positive turnout this year, and we did last year also, but we want as many people as possible.

Our club is all about promoting a healthy lifestyle, and the more people out here the better,” says Brown.

Significant strides were taken to build upon the event from last year, including the addition of a DJ, yard games and other fun activities. The event has made strides to become more kid friendly.

For those who don’t necessarily find exercise recreational, Hausbeck

explains that you should still come out and shouldn’t be discouraged.

“The great thing of the course that participants run is that it comes back to the starting area a couple of times, so if someone was tired and didn’t want to finish the race they could stop at any point,” explains Hausbeck.

With PTA club being a studentrun organization, the students of the club get to choose how the funds from the color run are allocated.

“Students ultimately have the say on where they want the funds to go. This year, the students have decided to use the profits to help fund their tests for the state board certification to become a physical therapy assistant. After paying tuition for a couple years and with the tests being so expensive (all considered, the test [...] [is very expensive]), if we can use our funds to alleviate that financial burden, it’s great for our students, and our club as a whole,” explains Brown.

Delta College hosts a free electronic repair clinic Jennifer Torres • Reporterportero

Today, consumers have increased their use of technology and, with this, the expenses of fixing them.

From improvements to software installations, maintenance can start at around $50 and go up to $300 (for hard drive replacement).

At Delta College, they have a special program run by the Information Technology & Security Computer Club that fixes the community’s electronics at no cost.

“We update software, remove viruses, [...] clean up PCs if they become slow [and] more severe trouble issues like… fried hard drives,” explains Benjamin Lehman, president of the PC clinic.

Each semester, the clinics are held on Fridays in room K-110 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For the fall semester, the clinic will

be open the second and third Fridays of each month. So: Sept. 14, Sept. 21, Oct. 12, Oct. 19, Nov. 9 and Nov. 16.

Those who take their tech there will need to fill out a waiver form and leave contact information with the volunteers in case they need to contact the owner.

Aaron Hizeskah is studying cyber security and believes this clinic has knowledgeable people to assist with repairs.

“They’re still learning, but they

know a lot of stuff,” said Hizeskah.

This experience doesn’t just help the community — it also gives the students an opportunity to learn how to work with the public.

“Ms. Cynthia has been very helpful with me and working with me […] helping me to learn and get better with […] community service,” said Clifford West Jr., a volunteer at the PC repair clinic.

Furthermore, students can gain

real-world skills in diagnosing and completing repairs that future employers look for in candidates.

Though the club does have computer science majors, Lehman says that any student who wants to know how to fix computers is welcome to join.

This volunteer group also assists students to pay for the $422 A+ programming certification — a highly sought after certificate.

“It’s like the RN [registered nurse certification] of computer science,” said Lehman.

Delta College’s staff also attends this event sometimes, and considers the clinic a cost-effective way to fix their electronics.

“It’s a great service that the student club offers, and our home computer is not working, so I am hoping they can help us out,” said Leanne Govitz, Delta College’s director of marketing and public information.

With computer repairs having the potential to exceed a person’s budget, individuals are glad to have a site where skilled technicians are trying their best to benefit others and not expecting anything in return.

You’re not safe in your own living room — Our View —

B

otham Jean, a 26-year-old, African-American man, was shot and killed by Amber Guyger, an off-duty police officer, in the living room of his own apartment. Guyger claims this was on accident, as she thought it was her apartment and that Jean was a burglar.

Let me rephrase. Another black man’s life was ended by the barrel of a “trained” police officer’s weapon.

It’s sad how desensitized we’ve become as a nation to this issue. It’s commonplace to hear of this happening now. However, from a legal standpoint, this should be a cut-and-dry case, right? A man was murdered in his own home. I mean, imagine if it were the other way around. A black man breaking into a white woman’s apartment, thinking it was his own?

There is no way he’d receive the leniency this officer is getting. How nice it must be to have the privilege of due process of law. How nice it must be to have the privilege of being innocent until proven guilty.

To make matters worse, the Dallas police department filed a search warrant on Jean’s apartment and released a statement saying they found “drug paraphernalia,” including marijuana and a metal grinder.

Seriously... who cares? This man was killed in his own home, and media outlets are trying to

undermine his character by showing that they found some weed in his apartment? I can’t believe this.

Amber Guyger is currently on administrative leave throughout the investigation. Florida Statute 776.013 states that you “may defend your home or occupied vehicle from anyone trying to unlawfully gain access or entry to it by use of deadly force. Should this kind of incidence occur, you do not need to retreat or fire a warning shot to scare the intruder.” — Guyger certainly didn’t do either of those things. As a firearm owner in Florida, she was within her right with her actions, but as a trained police officer, her procedure of handling this situation is worrisome.

The most troublesome part of this all is how much the stories between Guyger and the witnesses conflict.

Both witnesses say they heard a knock. Why would Guyger knock on a door that she believed to be her own? Additionally, Jean kept a bright red doormat outside of his home, specifically so that people would not mistake his apartment for theirs. Furthermore, residents of the apartment complex have reported that the doors in the complex close automatically, as most do, since they are spring-operated. In Guyger’s statement, she said the door to the apartment was cracked.

Considering all of this, it should be simple. But (according Guyger’s defense team) it isn’t. Guyger is awaiting trial and Jean’s character is being called into question over marijuana. Jean was an upstanding, young, black man with a promising future as an accountant, holding a partnership with a firm called PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

It is a sad day in America when you can be killed in the middle of your own living room, and still not receive the same treatment your fellow Americans would receive.

Set aside if you refuse to see that this is an issue of race, are these police really the people you want protecting you? With all of the training that the boys (and girls) in blue receive, they can’t keep a level head and keep from shooting unarmed African-Americans?

Collectively, our staff sees this as a tragic time for America. Even with the numerous killings of black people by police in the streets — you should be able to feel safe in your own home. Hopefully, justice will be served for Jean in the most righteous way. Otherwise, I don’t know what to think of this country anymore.

An ode to Heelys Kelly Winters • Reporter

Ah... yes. We all remember (and are guilty of) sneaking our fresh, new pair of Heelys into middle school to race through the halls. What a glorious time that was. Despite common belief, this chapter of our lives doesn’t have to be over. Heelys Inc. is still manufacturing and selling their magnificent, childhood-changing foot apparel. For those of us that didn’t have an iconic childhood, Heelys are brightly colored sneakers (mostly targeted toward a younger demographic) that have a removable wheel in their heels to create somewhat of a rollerblade effect. However, unlike rollerblades, Heelys were fashion-forward shoes that could be worn every day. Even without the wheel! Though this was the case, most people did invest in Heelys solely to enjoy their wheel feature. The thing that was so great about Heelys was the fact that they were as efficient as a skateboard when it came to traveling, but you didn’t have to deal with carrying

around a bulky board. Your source of transport was built into your shoes! This is what made Heelys so ahead of their time. The functionality was on point. Perhaps their look was a little iffy, but so were the early 2000s, so they fit right in.

It sincerely warms my heart to see that Heelys have survived all of these years and have continued to service kids that are far too coordinated for their age.

If you fell into the camp of kids that were not movement-savvy, but begged your parents for a pair (like me), you know that even though you ate concrete every time you began to pick up speed, you wouldn’t want to see a childhood without Heelys.

All of the scraped knees and elbows were well worth that one time you were able to glide long and fast nearly effortlessly.

Heelys “died” too soon. Yes, they are still on the market, but when is the last time you’ve seen someone repping a sick new pair of Heelys? Exactly. The practicality may no longer be valued by our generation, but we

should encourage those younger than us to give them a try.

What’s so wrong about having wheels in your shoes?

We can’t be the only generation that gets to enjoy them in all of their glory. We all must go and spread the good word that Heelys live.

This one’s a biggie. Student loans are a big burden that millions of American college students bear long after they finish college. As of May 2018, Americans owe more than $1.48 trillion in student loan debt, as reported by studentloanhero.com, and the average individual student loan debt for Class of 2017 graduates went up six percent from 2016, to nearly $40,000.

It should, therefore, be no surprise that there is a high risk for students to default on their loans, or go delinquent on their payments. Minnesota Public Radio reports that the Minnesota Office of Higher Education is attempting to tackle this situation by filing lawsuits against students for falling behind on their loan payments.

Although you aren’t likely to end up in the slammer for defaulting on your loan payments, losing a lawsuit from a debt collector can result in serious financial consequences. Here are some steps to take if you end up in the unfortunate, extreme situation of getting sued when you default on your student loan debt.

Just a disclaimer: I’m no legal expert … the following is based on research that I have done on this subject. You will definitely want to do research on your own if you find yourself in this situation, because legal matters like this are always quite complicated.

1. Don’t panic; respond on time!

Again, you aren’t under arrest and you aren’t going to jail — you’re just being sent to court by debt collectors. However, don’t forget to respond in a timely manner. It’s important to meet deadlines, because failure to respond to a lawsuit in time means the student loan company will get a judgment against you and be able to take more drastic actions against you financially.

2. Find an attorney You want to prepare a solid defense, so it’s a good idea to find yourself a competent lawyer. This will help in sorting out your possible options, as well as provide you with valuable legal guidance.

Melanie Lockert of studentloanhero.com advises that, “Student loan lawyers can take a complex situation and simplify it for you. They can then offer you actionable steps and solutions to move forward when you feel stuck or hopeless.”

If you can’t find an attorney, there are resources available for do-it-yourself solutions. LegalConsumer.com recommends the guide “Represent Yourself in Court” by Paul Bergman and Sara J. Berman-Barrett, which is available for purchase on nolo. com and other retailers such as Amazon.

3. Good defense If you can provide substantive proof and reasoning for your case to the court, there are many valid defenses. For instance, maybe you are being sued for more than you actually owed in debt. Or perhaps your loan was cancelled at some point. Or maybe you did pay your loan and the lender just got records mixed up. There are several possibilities depending on your situation, but you and your attorney will have to do some fact checking.

4. What if I win/lose?

Whether you win or lose depends on how strong your defense is. If you lose the case and the creditor gets a judgment against you, they can proceed to take more drastic financial actions in order to get what you owe them, including wage garnishment and the freezing of your bank account. However, legalconsumer.com points out that if you are “judgment-proof ” — meaning that you own/earn very little — you won’t need to pay anything because creditors are prohibited by law to take what you have. If you win, well, you don’t owe any money. Congratulations!

Some can be intricate while others are simplistic.

Tattoos come in all shapes, sizes, patterns and colors.

In a society that promotes freedom of expression, why are tattoos condemned?

While it seems basic — just ink on the body arranged in a picture — society has seen tattoos as problematic to say the least. Oftentimes, people with tattoos can be denied jobs because of the artwork on their skin. They might also be forced to cover them up if the employer decides to hire them. This can commonly be attributed to one answer: employers associate tattoos with criminals.

Yes — people with tattoos have committed crimes in the past. So have people without tattoos; tattoo wearers become victims of stereotyping.

All because of ink on their bodies. It is not based on their qualifications but, rather, their appearance.

People with tattoos can conduct business all the same as people without.

In some cases, a few tattoos may be seen as inappropriate but, more often than not, they have a deep meaning to the people they inhabit. I know many people that have tattoos, and all of their tattoos have meaning to them. One includes an hourglass with sand coming down to represent our limited time here. Another tattoo features a compass indicating finding our direction in life.

Nothing is offensive about them, but still they must be covered up, in case they scare others.

Tattoos allow you to express who you are as an individual.

Colors, shapes, patterns and quotes of them help convey your thoughts and feelings.

Each one speaks to who you are — because it was chosen specifically by you, for you.

The ink is on your skin — nobody else’s. Since tattoos are your decision from the start, nobody should be able to tell you if you should cover them up or not. It’s a decision that has been weighed and made. If it’s special to you, then others do not have a right to say it doesn’t belong on your skin.

It appears that many more people are getting tattoos than in recent years. This could be an indication of society’s acceptance toward them. However, tattoos have yet to be fully accepted and deserve to be. Don’t you ink?

Lady Pioneers shut down Ancilla College Chargers Joe Thornton • Editor-in-chief

“Win the day” The phrase adorned on the back of Delta’s womens’ soccer warm-up attire as they prepared to face off against the Ancilla College Chargers on Sept. 15.

And that’s what they’ve been doing, drawing inspiration from the upset against Jackson College in their season opener to win the last four games in a row.

With the sun beating down on everyone present, the Lady Pioneers held a clear advantage before the game even began with almost double the amount of players as Ancilla.

As the first half began, Delta came out with a coordinated attack on offense. Their passes were crisp and calculated. Unfortunately, some shots were missed early — shooting high for the most part.

The game was anything but back and forth, as the Lady Pioneers continued to pressure the Chargers with an offensive onslaught. Eventually, with the consistent pressure, the first goal was scored with 20 minutes and 26 seconds remaining in the first half by No. 16, Kaylee Meissner, with an assist by No. 19, Hunter Kukla. Then, the floodgates opened, with No. 15, Skylar Eckert, and No. 2, Hannah Emington, scoring, making the score 3-0 at the conclusion of the first half.

Goalie Kalyn Breckenridge must have been bored since Ancilla was rarely able to even cross the center line with any organization. It’s often said that the best defense is a good offense, and that was certainly the case in this game. Breckenridge was forced to spend much of the game as an onlooker because, what more was there to do? Her team had such a ferocious offensive attack that she didn’t have to do much.

As the game continued in the second half, the heat was causing tensions to rise for opposing Ancilla College.

Audibly enough to be heard from the sideline, “Where are you?!” exclaimed an Ancilla player, frustrated with her teammates and the way they’d been playing.

The final goal of the game, scored by Eckert, gave the Delta College women’s soccer team a 4-0 victory. This is the team’s fifth win in a row, coming into this game ranked at No. 6 in the nation within their division.

Although this win was a team effort, No. 15 Haleigh Amthor with her position of midfielder showed speed, evasiveness and confidence when handling the ball. She credits her success to co-Head Coach Paul Stenglein’s willingness to let his players try new things.

“In a game like this where we are told to experiment[...]. Since we’ve played them [Jackson] before, I was experimenting with running up the field more than I usually do against other teams. It’s hard sometimes running back and forth up the line with this weather, but you just have to push through,” explains Amthor.

When viewing the stat sheet for games, a midfielder’s impact isn’t always prevalent. Although Amthor didn’t have a goal to her name, her consistent hustle to push the ball forward often initiated offensive drives. While this win is certainly something warranting celebration, Amthor and her team know there is always room to grow.

“We’re always trying to improve, and something we can always improve on is our communication. It is essential to talk and communicate while out on the field,” expressed Amthor.

While the hot sun would be a trial for the average soccer player, Stenglein wasn’t worried about it affecting his team.

“Our team is set up for being able to play in all conditions — temperature being one we can’t control. You could tell by the end of the game that Ancilla, with less [sic] players, was getting really tired. Having as many players as we do, our rotation was able to keep girls fresh and keep us going,” Stenglein proudly stated.

Following a loss to Jackson College in the season opener, the coaches of the Lady Pioneers have made necessary changes to ensure success for their players. Those changes were on full display in this assertive victory.

“We changed our formation. In the past we always played what we called a 3-5-2 formation. For seven years we used that formation, but that formation didn’t seem like it fit well with this team. So, we went to 4-3-2-1 formation, starting with four on the back line and one forward. That formation works well with this team. We keep playing it and the longer we play it we’ll become stronger and more comfortable with the formation,” explained Stenglein.
