Bay City holds public meeting regarding drawbridges Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

BAY CITY — While the situation with two of Bay City’s drawbridges — including the possibility of implementing tolls — remains in the air, a traffic study has been conducted in order to evaluate possible options.

Independence and Liberty Bridges have been recently challenged with deteriorating conditions and a dire need for repairs. As a result, the city has been mulling over different options over the past year, including a county-wide millage or the selling of both bridges to a private firm.

The latter option would mean the city would be relieved of liability for the bridges, but would also result in a toll being charged to cross both bridges in order to fund repairs, as well as general upkeep and maintenance.

Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment Inc. (OHM) was contracted by the city to explore different alternatives regarding the future of Independence and Liberty Bridges.

The result is the Bay City Bridge, Traffic & Operations Study. The general study area extends north to south from Wilder Road to 22nd Street, and west to east from M-13 to North Trumbull Street.

As cited in the study, Independence and Liberty Bridges currently get an average of 23,780 and 16,849 vehicles in daily traffic, respectively.

A public meeting hosted by OHM was held at the Bay City town hall Thursday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. in order to receive community input. Project manager Matt Wendling gave a presentation regarding the progress they’ve made in their study.

“We don’t have answers yet,” Wendling stated. “We have just now gotten into the traffic analysis portion of our study.”

As stated on OHM’s interactive web page on the study, there are four steps in the project process. Step one is to collect relevant data and analyze traffic and safety within their area of study. Step two is to conduct a traffic and safety analysis in order to assess problematic areas; this meeting was a part of that step.

Step three is about investigating

alternatives after data has been collected. The fourth, and final step, is for OHM advisors to present their recommendations to the City Commission and create a final study report based on their findings.

Bay City citizens who attended the meeting raised a variety of concerns, from the lack of taxes being paid in order to fund maintenance to the possibility that a majority of citizens would avoid use of the bridges if they start to charge a toll for crossing.

Wendling continued to make it clear that the feedback OHM is receiving is very important to them and that they intend to use it as a factor in their analysis.

The goal of this meeting, says Wendling, was to “get feedback on what concerns our citizens here within the city limits on issues they face day to day, whether they’re commuters or residents within the city.”

Following the presentation and Q&A session, a one-on-one discussion was held so that the citizens could ask questions to project staff and discuss the issue further.

FRANKENMUTH — During winter, it’s the place to find ice sculptures and mass quantities of snow. At the tail end of summer, it’s the place to find classic hot rods and muscle cars on parade.

The Frankenmuth Auto Fest 35th annual show kicked off Friday, Sep. 7 in downtown Frankenmuth. Classic cars were on display all over the town, but there was plenty to do aside from listening to noisy engines and taking whiffs of hot rubber and fresh exhaust.

At 5 p.m. Friday, the Big Block Party got things started. As Main Street was closed off from Genesee Street to Jefferson Street, the excited crowds gathered to watch the proudly presented lineup of cars as well as enjoy food and live entertainment.

For many attendants, this isn’t their first time coming to the Auto Fest.

“We’ve been coming for seven years now,” says Bonnie H. from Warren. “People get to drive [all the different] cars around and show them off. Everybody’s set here for a good time.”

Chris Hayward from Livonia and his wife finally managed to get a room at the Bavarian Inn after waiting for five years so that they can come to the show.

“It’s a very popular car show, and we’re very surprised how many people [come here] from Canada,” says Hayward.

Renee Aloyo from Bridgeport came to the

show, bringing along his orange 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner convertible — or as he dubbed it, the “Marilyn Monroe,” as the car came out the same year that the actress died.

“I don’t baby the car,” says Aloyo. “I drove it to Texas [and] Georgia [...] from Florida all the way back home.”

Some of the cars featured at the Auto Fest weren’t just up for display: for instance, Andrew Mosher from Taylor came to the show to sell his 1964 Chevrolet Malibu SS convertible which he has owned for 18 years. “[I enjoy] looking at all the cars [and] seeing all the people,” says Mosher, who has been coming to the Auto Fest for the past 15 years.

Sponsored by Country Street Machines and Frankenmuth Rotary Club, the Frankenmuth Auto Fest is a charitable event, having raised more than $2 million for local charities over its 35-year run, as stated in the 2018 tabloid brochure.

For the first time in Delta College’s 57-year history, faculty members are working to form a union through the Michigan Education Association (MEA).

The faculty responded six weeks ago to a decision Delta College’s president, Jean Goodnow, made on the college’s shared governance model.

The shared governance model — as cited by the Association of Governing Boards — is a system that involves the board, faculty and administrators to decide on academics, budgeting, selection of the president and other college operations.

MEA director Saun Strobel says the faculty sees “President Goodnow […] moving away from that model that has been effective for the last 50 years.”

Goodnow responded in a statement saying that “we have a wonderful college. We have wonderful students, faculty and staff.

Our faculty have a First Amendment right to look at whether or not they want to collectively bargain, and we certainly support that.”

Strobel says that by organizing the union, students will benefit because faculty are experts in their field. Professors need to be involved with the curriculum to ensure students are getting what they need out of their classes. Strobel said there is a pattern of higher education schools forming unions because faculty are losing their voices in decisions made about the curriculum they teach.

Strobel says that more than 50 percent of full-time faculty support the union.

The Collegiate has tried to reach out to three of the fourteen faculty union leaders for a statement, but they have declined at this time.

Leaman’s Green Applebarn opens for fall festivities Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

FREELAND − Leaman’s Green Applebarn opened its doors Sept. 1 for the 2018 season. Multiple families gathered that day to indulge in the usual fall festivities.

The orchard offers something for all ages, but caters especially to younger children. With a playground, a corn maze and putt-putt golf, this is the perfect place to take little ones. For older visitors, the donuts and cider for sale will make the trip worth your while.

Employee Alan Reisinger become a part of Leaman’s staff after marrying the farmer’s daughter back in 1975.

After a long summer preparing for the new season, he enjoys seeing the fruits of his labor pay off.

“We had a lot of work ahead of us to prepare for [opening] day, since it isn’t just preparing for one day — it’s preparing for the entire season. From putting up decorative lights, informative signs and setting chairs up, it has taken a lot of energy and time,” says Reisinger.

Although they’ve opened up to the public, there is still much work to be done to ensure they are able to have as successful of a season as possible.

“We’re still in the process of preparing things.

Today has been what we’d call a soft opening, since most of our features are available, but not all of them.

We still have to prepare for hayrides, which begin next week. Personally, I have to build another hay wagon and make sure that the tractors are up and running. [...] Every member of the staff has their individual duties to fulfill,” explains Reisinger.

Looking at all of the children having fun on the opening day of the orchard, Reisinger is able to see others enjoy the orchard as much as he does.

“I’m ready to make more memories this year.

Some of my favorite moments — since I drive the tractor for the hayrides — are when a little boy or girl gets off and says ‘Thank you, Mr. Driver!’ Those moments make it all worth it,” says Reisinger.

Along with making their visitors happy, this business is one that is able to make surrounding farmers happy by supporting local growers.

“At our orchard, we don’t grow enough apples for all of the foot traffic we bring in,” says Reisinger. “Instead, we have three other local growers that we buy apples from, since they don’t get the foot traffic we do.”

Although working at the orchard isn’t easy, what keeps Reisinger going is all the unique experiences that make amazing stories later on.

“By the time the day is done, everyone here is exhausted. Our feet are throbbing, someone winds up with a smashed finger and our backs are sore. But then we start telling stories about the things we saw that day. Working with kids, we see all types of crazy things. It’s great to finish the day and laugh with each other by sharing those stories,” laughs Reisinger.

Though the orchard is only open for the last three months of the year, the workers have to work year round to ensure the best products for their customers.

“This is a 12-month commitment. We bust our tails all year for this moment. In the winter we have

Regarding upcoming events, for students, Leaman’s School Pride Day will be Sept. 15.

Anyone who shows up wearing school gear will recieve $1 off admission. They will offer antique rides and apple picking available to the public.

Leaman’s will be open for the 2018 season until Dec. 31, serving donuts and cider along with other signature creations. Those interested in learning more about the business can do so at www.greenapplebarn.com.

Retail Roundup: Is Hemlock turning into a ghost town?

HEMLOCK − How much more can a small town take? Left and right, businesses in Hemlock are closing their doors forever, which has been happening over the past few years.

Big Drew’s Family Grill closed in November 2017, leaving three out of six of its plaza’s tenants vacant. On Dec. 6 the same year, Ric’s Food Center announced that their Hemlock location would close after 23 years as the town’s only grocery store, leaving Hemlock Pharmacy as the only remaining tenant in the Ric’s plaza.

There are other businesses in the list, including the Hemlock Whippy Dip, RadioShack and MidMichigan Health. But that’s not all — another long-time Hemlock business has just joined the string of closures. Hemlock’s Ace Hardware started their store closing sale Thursday, Aug. 30 as owner Ray Wohlfeil has decided to retire.

While this has been happening, people have been concerned that Hemlock as a whole is turning into a ghost town.

The future of other businesses in the area may look unclear, with rumors going around that more will close.

The deteriorating parking lot at Richland Plaza East is nearly abandoned, as all but one of the shopping center’s tenants have either closed permanently or moved to another location.

Annamarie Reno, Richland Township manager, is sad to see these businesses go, but does not believe that more businesses will follow suit.

“Each business [...] has had a different reason for closing their doors,” says Reno. “And while yes, we have had a few businesses close, we also have other businesses in the process of opening.”

For instance, the Hemlock Ace Hardware is closing because their owner is retiring, not necessarily because the store has been performing poorly. Big Drew’s was a sports bar and grill very similar to neighboring Farmer’s Home

Tavern. The latter has called Hemlock home for more than 100 years, and thus has already been well established into the community, putting Big Drew’s — which only stayed open for five years — at a clear disadvantage.

As for Ric’s Food Center, the Mount Pleasant-based grocer already closed in Interlochen one month before Hemlock.

Owner Monica Reynolds told MLive in December 2017 that an overall changing retail climate is affecting small businesses in general, making it harder for them to survive. With the Meijer on Gratiot Road being fewer than eight miles away, Ric’s struggled in the end. The chain currently operates three locations in Michigan.

M-46 — which stretches through the main drag of downtown Hemlock — has been undergoing reconstruction this year, including repaving and the replacement of drainage pipes. Reno is optimistic that the community will start to become more active when this project is finished and the township can undergo a beautification project going forward.

“I have to believe that like many other communities, we are going through changes right now. However, I believe that these changes will make

our community stronger and better in the near future. [...] I see the few vacant buildings being occupied by merchants and an opportunity for current businesses to grow. The infrastructure is in place for great things to happen in our community,” says Reno.

Reno states that three businesses will be opening in Hemlock: one being a photography studio and another one being a banquet hall located at the former Maple Hill Golf Club on Orr Road.

Although she is unable to share any information about the third business, she says that one is expected to open soon after the M-46 construction ends.

So is Hemlock turning into a ghost town? Considering the fact that there are still many successful businesses operating in downtown Hemlock — Mama Mia’s Pizzeria, Farmer’s Home Tavern, Rick Ford Sales Inc. and Chandler’s Market, to name a few — it may not be time to panic just yet. Although the town is small, there could be potential for regrowth, especially once the M-46 reconstruction project is finished.

Trash cans removed in S wing for sustainability Jennifer Torres • Reporter Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

Facilities Manager Linda Petee walked out of an S wing classroom and noticed that a lot of recyclable material was left in waste baskets.

When checking other S wing classrooms, she realized students were not using designated recycle bins to limit waste.

“When that waste goes out, it goes to a landfill, and we’re charged what’s called a tipping fee [which represents waste removal costs],” says Petee. “The tipping fee is quite expensive; we pay it at least once a month, sometimes every three weeks.”

She took this up with Delta’s president Dr. Jean Goodnow and devised a plan to stop recyclable material from going into landfills.

By removing the waste baskets from Delta College, this plan is estimated to cut waste removal costs in half and save money by encouraging recycling.

At the end of the 2018 winter semester, all trash cans were removed from the S wing as part of this sustainability initiative. Students and faculty in S wing are now obligated to use the recycle bins outside of the classrooms, or nothing at all.

This isn’t the first time Delta College sustainability has made a big push on campus. In fact, they’ve been nationally recognized for their success.

The American Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) measured the performance of colleges across the United States and Canada in 17 sustainability impact areas in their 2018 Sustainable Campus Index.

In this list of ten top international associate (twoyear) colleges, Delta College ranked fifth overall. This makes Delta the second highest ranking associate college for sustainability in the United States, with Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon ranked second and the other three colleges ranked above Delta being located in Canada. “[Students] seem pretty receptive to the idea,” says Petee. “It is a bit different because when you leave the classroom, it’s like hiking. Leave no trace; you pick up after yourself and you dispose of your goods in a responsible way.”

“I think it is kind of weird that it is just in S wing, but it might lessen the amount of waste that we get,” says Kurstin Ryan, hospitality major. “At the same time, I think [garbage cans] are needed in certain situations.”

First annual Firkin Food Truck Festival in Birch Run is a hit Jennifer Torres • Reporter

When walking into the Firkin Food Truck Festival in Birch Run, people are gathered under a tent to converse and enjoy various foods provided by vendors.

For a few patrons, this is their second time coming back.

The first food truck festival was held on May 31 and continued to be held every last Thursday of each month until Aug. 30. The festival opened its doors at 5 p.m. and ran until 9 p.m.

One truck in particular, Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn, had just purchased their truck the day before the Aug. 30 festival.

“We were back and forth on, is it the right time,” said Joe Putnam, restaurant operations manager for Bavarian Inn. Other vendors that were present for the Thursday, Aug. 30 festival were Fresh 2U Foods, the Cheese Trap, YaEatYet, Los Jalepeno and more.

“We even had a good 50 to 60-feet line. At

one point [I] bet you we had probably three or so hundred people here and constantly rotated,” says Jeremiah Burger, a cook for the Cheese Trap.

Patrons raved not only about the food, but the variety as well.

“They have enough trucks out here and it’s a nice variety of stuff, so I am happy,” says Jessica Broussard, a Clio resident.

“I worked all day and I came home, and they all said we’ve been waiting an hour for you to get home so we can go to the food trucks,” says Patty Ward, a Saginaw resident.

One vendor that had bragging rights was Alex Puckett, owner and manager of YaEatYet which was voted in Reader’s Choice for best Cuban and best food truck in 2018.

Laler DeCosta, director of events and operations at Pinnacle Venue Services, says they wanted to be more than trade shows and are trying to get some entertainment and community events going.

The Food Truck festival came about through ideas they had and the realization of the popularity of them. Although it has wrapped up for the year, it is likely that the food trucks will be rolling back into town next year, ready to feed the Birch Run community once again.

Petee mentioned the concerns expressed by faculty about the new program, as students reportedly were not taking their trash with them as they left their classes, leaving the faculty to clean up after students.

In response, waste baskets were returned to S wing classrooms, however, recycle bins are still dominant in that wing’s hallways.

Petee says that current plans are for the entire college to transition to the new trash can removal initiative by the end of the year.

“We are taking all the information that we gathered in the pilot, and we’re [...] setting out a schedule of where we will begin the official program, so we’re going to look into public spaces like main hallways, and then we’re gonna move into classrooms again,” says Petee.

Shelly Raube, former Delta College Athletic Director is working to develop student’s experiences with staff and faculty in her new position as Associate Dean of Retention.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Shelly Raube sat down joking and smiling as she prepared to be interviewed on her new promotion as the new Associate Dean of Retention.

The decision of going through with this promotion has been a hard and difficult decision for Raube to make.

“I didn’t want our student-athletes thinking I was leaving them, but [the way] I look at it [is], now I get to impact every student,” says Raube,

moved with some emotion.

As the athletic director, she was very actively involved with her student-athletes and worked with them closely to help them achieve success. Setting up programs specifically for her athletes, she ultimately affected all of Delta College’s students.

Some of Raube’s biggest achievements as athletic director are on the Pioneer website, which credits her with improving the percentage of student-athletes that were recognized for academic success.

She was able to increase the AllMichigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) academic award by 204 percent, the MCCAA AllConference Awards by 231 percent and helped 25 athletes earn the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Award.

Previous co-workers are enthusiastic about Raube’s promotion.

“We are all really excited for her and we know that she is going to do great things.” says Alison Ginter, activities coordinator for Student

and Civic Engagement (SACE).

Those who recently had an opportunity to get to know Raube were also excited about her promotion.

“This new role helps us to focus on students […] Shelly has brought new ideas that will help us succeed these goals,” says Martin Finney, career advisor at Delta College.

Student workers are also excited to be working with her.

“I’ve seen her before and I am really happy to be working with her,” says Stephanie Miller, student worker at Career Services. “She is a good fit here.”

In the four weeks Raube has been here, she has been working on implementing new ideas. Right now, she is focusing on student experiences. On Aug. 30, Raube started a new communications program that all staff and faculty are implementing.

“Our students are going to start hearing us more in multiple ways,” says Raube. “We’re really trying to wrap up our students into our experiences [...] in hopes that it will encourage them and

promote that they will come back.”

She also loves challenges, as she sees them as opportunities for her to grow as a person.

She is not afraid to ask for help because she sees these as opportunities to search people out when a challenge comes her way. She says this promotes collaborative communication with staff and builds on the college’s already strong foundation with committing themselves to student success.

Raube says she has many big ideas for the students at Delta College and looks forward to meeting them all.

As she settles into her new role, Raube provides some wisdom that helped her in taking her new role.

“Sometimes they look at a position and they may think, ‘Uh... athletic director, associate dean of retention. That’s a big jump,’ right? I think that I am one that I never settle for what your job description is. Push that level, because you don’t know what you can become,” says Raube.

Fleetwood Mac: “The Chain” is broken Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

If you have been keeping up with music/ entertainment related news for the past few months, you are already aware of Fleetwood Mac’s decision to dismiss their long time guitarist, Lindsey Buckingham, for good, looking ahead toward their upcoming tour starting this fall. Famed Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers and Crowded House’s Neil Finn were chosen to replace Buckingham, and the new lineup just debuted on “Ellen” Wednesday, Sept.

5, performing their classic songs “The Chain” and “Gypsy.” So, how does the new lineup compare?

To begin with, if there is one band member that I would most credit for ensuring Fleetwood Mac’s longevity in the music industry, that would be Lindsey Buckingham. He has arguably done the most to give the band’s music the polish it needed, helping to craft their signature sound with his songwriting, arranging and production skills. As a musician, he gave many a Fleetwood Mac song that distinctive sound with his unique guitar playing.

Sure, Stevie and Christine also sang and wrote songs, and the never-changing Mick Fleetwood/ John McVie rhythm section stayed in throughout

all the lineup changes. But Lindsey Buckingham was a part of the band’s longest lasting and most successful lineup to date and, of all their guitarists, he has the longest tenure (33 years in total). That alone should say how important he was to the band.

And now they fired Buckingham — reportedly over “disagreement” about the nature of their tour — and replaced him with not one, but two different guitarists that had almost nothing to do with Fleetwood Mac up to this point (save for Mike Campbell co-writing “Freedom” with Stevie Nicks on the 1990 album “Behind the Mask”). I am almost 100% certain that Stevie Nicks picked Campbell because of his association with Tom Petty, whom Nicks was good friends with. As for Neil Finn... well, I really don’t know.

Yet still, I gave the new lineup a fair chance, and I left disappointed. There were audio mixing issues with the “Ellen” performance, but more importantly, where is the chemistry? Why doesn’t the band sound like they fit together so perfectly anymore? These are characteristics that helped propel albums like “Rumours” to multi-platinum status, so this is a pretty major problem. Both Campbell and Finn are professional musicians, with decades of experience in the recording industry. Campbell shreds like a boss, and

Lauryn Hill’s “Miseducation” continues schooling Ryan Reichard• Reporter

Former Fugees frontwoman Lauryn Hill released her first (and only) studio album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” 20 years ago. Since its release, the album has inspired countless R&B and hip-hop artists. For this decorated album anniversary I thought it would be fitting to look back on what makes it so legendary and how it made an everlasting impact.

Before releasing “Miseducation” Hill became pregnant, inspiring many of the concepts explored. Drawing from R&B, hip-hop and soul sounds, “Miseducation” offered a unique blend of genres from beginning to end. Categorized as neo soul, “Miseducation” is credited as being one of the first albums to bring the genre to the forefront of popular music through its hit singles “Doo Wop (That Thing),” “ExFactor” and “Everything is Everything”.

“Miseducation” saw Hill take on difficult issues such as motherhood, her departure from the Fugees, love, heartbreak and God. Hill turned these topics into beautifully written songs that have stood the test of time not only for their sound, but for their full, rich content as well. On “To Zion” Hill sings about how her family comes before her career and the challenges she faced while pregnant such as the pressure to abort her child. Part of what makes this album so legendary is its willingness to take on difficult subjects and not shy away from them in its contents.

Commercially, the album was a huge success.

The album sold 422,634 copies in its first week, breaking the record for best first week sales by a female artist. By the time a year passed, “Miseducation” had surpassed more than 10 million copies sold worldwide. “Miseducation” has since sold over 20 million worldwide and has been certified 8x platinum in the United States. Today’s artists would be lucky to reach those numbers with streaming included. The singles were also successful, with the lead single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” peaking at number one. This feat made Hill the first female rapper with a number one single, where it remained the longest running number one single by a female rapper until Cardi B released “Bodak Yellow.” Other singles — “Ex-Factor” and “Everything is Everything” — peaked in the top 40.

Critically, the album was well received. Some praised it for its views on life and love from the perspective of a woman, while others acclaimed it for its genre bending sound and Hill’s transition from singing to rapping throughout many of the songs. “Miseducation” has landed on various music publications’ best albums of all time lists.

If you haven’t already listened to this album, I recommend it. One time through the record and you will see why “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” continues to school the music industry even 20 years after its release.

Finn was an excellent frontman for Crowded House.

I mean, I could listen to “Don’t Dream It’s Over” or “Fall At Your Feet” any day. That’s not the point.

The point is, the new guitarists don’t fit in with Fleetwood Mac. Let’s talk about “The Chain:” Campbell’s guitar solo did not sound quite right; it was good, but different from Buckingham’s solo, and the latter fit in much better. Neil Finn? He put in a valiant effort to sing Buckingham’s lead vocal part, but again, his vocal chemistry with McVie and Nicks is nothing compared to Buckingham’s.

Fleetwood Mac is still one of my favorite bands of all time because of their unique songwriting, chemistry and musicianship, three aspects that can be heard across all of their different lineups. I’m not seeing all of those aspects in the Campbell/Finn lineup, though. If you think that saying Lindsey Buckingham was the heart of Fleetwood Mac is a bit of a stretch, compare the band’s performance of “The Chain” on the 1997 live album “The Dance” to their recent performance of that song on “Ellen.” Not even close. I’m sorry, I wanted to give props to this new lineup, but so far they just sound like a cover band to me.

Perhaps there is some potential for improvement, but for now, they can go their own way.

K-pop: viral trend or mainstream mainstay?

Across the musical history of the United States, many genres have come and gone. Other genres have been a brief fad impacting the charts, then disappearing relatively quickly. A good case for this point is the several Latin booms across the United States charts, the most recent being the unfortunate smash hit “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, which sat comfortably on top of the charts all summer long in 2017.

But since the early 2010s, a new music genre has been creeping onto the charts.

Korean pop — or K-pop, as it’s known — has been especially big in the past year or so with several acts crossing over to the United States. Perhaps the first K-pop act many will recognize is Psy. Psy broke through in the summer of 2012 with his undeniable viral dance craze “Gangnam Style.” Lead by a catchy electronic beat and one of the first dance tracks of the new decade, “Gangnam Style” skyrocketed up the U.S. charts peaking at number two. Everybody and their grandma was dancing along, and yet the song’s

lyrics were almost entirely in Korean.

Flash forward to a few years later and K-pop has become a regular staple on the U.S. charts, thanks to Korean boy band BTS. Arguably leading the next charge of K-pop across the seas, BTS has been able to chart several hits in the U.S. Releasing several albums this year alone, BTS has dominated the top positions of the all-genre charts. “Fake Love” — their first single from “Love Yourself: Tear” — debuted and peaked at number ten in the U.S. This is a huge feat considering that not many K-pop songs have charted that high. “Love Yourself: Tear” became the first K-pop album to hit number one in the U.S. BTS show no signs of slowing down either, as the group has just released yet another album. Their latest release is entitled “Love Yourself: Answer,” and it appears as though it will make a considerable impact on the U.S. market.

The album’s lead single “IDOL” is set to

place respectably on the charts as well especially with Nicki Minaj hopping on the remix to bolster sales. With all of the success surrounding K-pop, what could have led to its popularity?

One possible answer is social media. In Psy’s case, he dominated YouTube as a dance sensation, eventually racking up more than 2 billion views. People flocked to the site in order to learn the dance and replicate it as best as possible, all the while racking up views and exposure to an audience previously unable to reach.

In the case of BTS, their avid Twitter following could be the exposure that YouTube was for Psy. In 2017 alone, they were the most tweeted about musical group, having been retweeted or liked over half a billion times according to Forbes. That’s not saying YouTube doesn’t

Record convention to host second show of year in Bay City Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

BAY CITY — Do you love music, and have an affinity for collecting records? Are there some obscure albums or collectibles that you want to knock off your wishlist? If the answer to those questions was yes, the upcoming Bay City Record Convention is your next big opportunity to grow your collection.

The semiannual convention — which has been running since 2012 and also took place earlier this year Feb. 10 — will feature vendors offering music of many different genres, available in a variety of formats such as vinyl, CD and audio cassette.

Event organizer Raymond Pounds says the vendors will mostly be the same as last time. He has done more advertising for the convention and expects to have a larger turnout this time around.

“I’ve got [vendors] coming from all different directions,” says Pounds. “This time I’ve got one coming from the other side of the state.”

There will also be giveaways of numerous items including record supplies and gift certificates to Radio Wasteland Records in Midland and Electric Kitsch in Bay City, both of which are among the many different sponsors of the event.

A drawing for a record player is also going to take place at 2:00 p.m. during the convention.

“I couldn’t do this show at all without all the vendors and people,” says Pounds, emphasizing that he has never made money with the record show, and that the whole point of running it is “to have fun.”

The Bay City Record Convention will take place Saturday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Amvets Post 22, located at 520 N. Pine Road in Essexville, across from Meijer. Doors open at 9 a.m. for Early Bird Admittance, where you can come shop an hour early for a $10 admission fee. Otherwise, regular admission price goes down to $1 per individual starting at 10 a.m and kids 12 and under are free, so you can bring the whole family along!

have an impact on this power group, because their latest release “IDOL” became the most viewed video in 24 hours on YouTube, beating out Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do”. Currently, it is the fastest video to reach 100 million views in 2018. But social media may not be the only contributing factor.

Another possible solution could be the anthemic, infectious production of K-pop music. Often times vibrant and full of energy, K-pop constructs some of the catchiest chorus in today’s pop music.

This is something our current pop music is lacking for the most part. K-pop brings different elements to the table instead of the standard pop song formula here in the U.S. It could be the music speaking for itself and the people responding to that.

Ascend nightclub comes to Soaring Eagle Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant has a new destination for busy students looking for ways to unwind with their free time.

Ascend — a new sports bar and nightclub — opened its doors to the general public on Sept. 2.

“Ascend sports bar & nightclub will be the new home for entertainment seekers who crave the diversified ambiance of dining, sports and live performances,” the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe announced in a press release. “The upscale décor, a high definition video wall, a triangle shaped bar with slot machines and dramatic LED lighting intends to exceed expectations of gamblers, sports fans and music lovers.”

The new nightclub offers a full menu with “an artesian twist [sic]” and a live entertainment schedule including music of various genres and comedy.

Ascend comes as part of a series of renovations and changes being made to the Mount Pleasant casino. Other added features include a new poker room and an enclosed gambling area for non-smokers, both of which are now open.

The renovation project — which totals to $26.5 million — is one of the resort’s largest investments since it first opened its doors in 1997, and is expected to come to a finish this October, as stated in the press release.

Louis C.K. makes a comeback no one was asking for Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

When the “Me Too” movement began last year, there were multiple names at the forefront. One that stuck out to me specifically was comedian Louis C.K. What he was accused of was personally the most jarring: exposing himself to numerous women.

All throughout his career, C.K. was accused of sexual harassment and misconduct but denied it consistently until there was too much evidence to deny. In November 2017, Louis C.K. took to social media and confirmed the allegations that were made against him, saying that he would be taking some time away from the scene to reflect.

Only nine months later, C.K. returned to the comedy scene Aug. 26, performing a surprise set at the Comedy Cellar in N.Y. When I first read this, I couldn’t believe that it was true. Nine months have passed, and he has done all the reflection he needs. This man should be imprisoned for what he did. He ruined the lives of multiple women — who saw him as an idol — to please his own sexual desires. If this were anyone without fame, he or she would be facing multiple criminal charges.

Instead, merely nine months later, C.K. thought the world really was missing him so much that he had to grace the stage with his presence once again.

What make things worse is, when he returned he was still performing like nothing had happened.

C.K. has made a living with his lewd comedy style, and he didn’t pull any punches, performing rape jokes in his return. Nine months after he exposed himself to naked women without their consent.

I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that he stepped onto the stage, or the fact that he received a standing ovation for doing so.

It’s stories like these that twist my stomach in knots to the point where it is hard to get out of bed the next day.

A famous, powerful man has silenced multiple innocent women, who are going to suffer from mental trauma for the rest of their lives, and he still has his fame.

This is a man who has no remorse for what he did. He fails to see the wrong in his actions and is just dipping his foot in the water to see if it’s okay for him to come out of hiding yet.

It isn’t.

Now, I don’t believe he should suffer forever.

Rock your Crocs off Kelly Winters • Multimedia Reporter

In recent news, there has been word of Crocs being discontinued. However, for those who weren’t ready to say “see ya later, alligator” to the most iconic shoes of all time, you’re in luck. Crocs will not yet be discontinued. Despite the fact that Crocs is closing the last of their manufacturers, the company will not be discontinuing the product.

Hopefully, people will give the simple shoe that packed such a strong punch a little more appreciation.

Seen as tacky by some but loved by many, Crocs have been taking the world by storm with their controversial look and debatable comfort. As a strong advocate of the signature rubber clog, I believe that a fresh pair of Crocs is the perfect piece to complete an outfit for any occasion. As many know, a Croc can be dressed up or down depending on the event.

Not only are Crocs

fashionable, they are also practical. No other shoe matches the complete and utter functionality of a classic pair of Crocs. Name another shoe that is made to battle any and all terrains a person may encounter.

They are even equipped with a back strap to ensure that they maintain their place on your feet while walking the vigorous paths that life takes you on. Crocs will always be there for you to protect and add support to your feet when no one else is.

Life is tough. And what better way to cushion your fall to rock bottom than a brightly colored pair of rubber Crocs? Rather than pushing Crocs away, we need to invite them into our life with open arms and embrace all that they have to offer. Before it’s too late, we have to show our appreciation. So let’s go out and get ourselves a pair of fresh Crocs to help guide us through all of life’s struggles.

Although I think what he did is inexcusable, if he would have taken the proper steps to get help for both himself and his victims, it’d be less jarring to see a return to the stage. There is little information available for how C.K. has handled the situation with the victims, but seeing how he is a narcissist, I imagine if he did anything to aid the victims, he’d want it all over the internet. He should only be seen on a stage after he has taken steps to ensure the mental health of himself and all the people he has harmed.

Instead, he waited nine months, took to a stage and made jokes about rape. He continues to show that he doesn’t understand the severity of his actions.

Any person who enables this type of behavior is part of the problem in our society. You shouldn’t be purchasing tickets to further the career of someone who has done such horrible things to so many people, openly admitted to them and not taken the proper steps to right his wrongs.

C.K. is harming the reputation of comedy as a whole with his actions, and hopefully people with a larger platform than myself will stand up to persecute him, as his peers, to give him a proper punishment.

Our View: Our stance on taxless tampons Enough is enough. Women have been dealing with so many unnecessary struggles for too long. Yes, over the past century women’s suffrage has increased greatly. However, women are still subjected to modern day discrimination. This often shows itself through the pink tax. The pink tax is the act of marking up the price of an object that’s specifically marketed towards women. The one product that gets the most flak for this act is tampons. Many people believe that tampons should at the very least be discounted, if not given away for free.

Most women feel that they shouldn’t have to pay for tampons since their use goes towards something that women can not help. The high price of tampons isn’t just an annoying routine to many. For some women, the price prevents them from getting what they need and they are forced to go without. This is especially apparent with younger girls who may not have a motherly figure in their life, or grow up in a low income household.

The price of tampons should not be the determining factor between women being able to obtain them or not. Tampons should be given out for free at schools and doctor’s offices to all girls, no matter their situation. No girl should have to feel embarrassment because she can’t get what she needs.

Some schools do give out tampons to younger girls in need, but this action is often limited due to strict budgetary constraints.

This wouldn’t be as big of an issue if tampons were, at the very least, sold at a discounted rate toward businesses. However, it is quite hard to obtain them in bulk at a reasonable price. This needs to be stopped. If the retail price of tampons can’t be lowered, then there should be some way for schools and other organizations to obtain them at a low cost.

This request should not be too much to ask. Tampon companies need to cut their prices and help out those in need. Women should not be repressed due to the nature of their bodies.

Big dogs walk away with debate Ryan Reichard • Reporter

Big dogs, small dogs, medium dogs — all dogs are great. However, when it comes down to big dogs pitted against little dogs, it’s big dogs all the way for me.

You don’t have to worry about stepping on bigger dogs. You can see them, because they aren’t hard to miss like little dogs. When you have little dogs, you are constantly doing a dance, worrying about if they are under your feet and trying to avoid stepping on them. With bigger dogs, you see them and can walk as you please.

Big dogs tend to bark less than little dogs. Smaller animals tend to be more vocal when it comes to everything. If you don’t pick them up, they bark; if they get excited, they bark for an hour; when they don’t want to be alone, they bark. Essentially, no matter what you do, little fluffy always is going to make a ton of noise.

Dogs that are bigger make better cuddle buddies than smaller dogs.

Sure, they take up half the bed, but you can wrap your arms around them and cuddle with them. With little dogs, you have to be so careful when you sleep. If you aren’t, then you run the risk of rolling over on little Fefe.

Big dogs don’t care if you roll on them, they just continue to sleep.

Part of having a dog is being able to play with it and have fun. When it comes to tug of war, big dogs are the best. They will throw their weight around and make the game a challenge that both parties will enjoy. But when it comes to smaller dogs, you have to be so cautious. You can’t pull too hard and

there is a constant fear of accidentally hurting the pup. The game becomes less of a game and more of a walk on eggshells — it’s filled with anxiety.

When it comes to security, I’d much rather have a bigger dog. Bigger dogs are more intimidating and better defenders than smaller dogs, especially with in-home security. Criminals are more likely to be scared off if they hear a bigger dog’s intimating bark, rather than little Fefe’s yapping. If a stranger comes near, the only action Fefe can do is bite their ankles, while bigger dogs can do more than that.

An attitude plays a huge role in what type of dog you get. Bigger dogs have a much calmer demeanor and are more friendly than little dogs. Instead of being moody and aggressive, big dogs are happy to see you come home and are more appreciative of the attention you give them.

Bigger dogs usually smile and wag their tails, while the little ones can charge you or nip at you.

Exercise is key to both your dog’s health and your own. So, when you want to go for runs, walks or hikes, bigger dogs are the best companions.

Not only do they have more endurance than little dogs, but they can also keep up with you in terms of speed and terrain. Little dogs get tired out after running for more than five minutes.

Overall, big dogs take the cake over little dogs. Big dogs won’t keep you on a short leash and will allow you to travel anywhere with your best friend. If you’re looking for a dog, get a big dog.

Good things in small packages: why small dogs are best Maia Wiederhold • Illustrator

Throughout my entire childhood, I grew up around medium to large sized canines. Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Great Danes mastiffs. You name it. I never knew what I was missing out on until my mother saw a pitiful picture of a rodent looking dog on the Saginaw County Animal Shelter’s website. Two short weeks later, I had fallen in love with that little chihuahua, and my perspective on dogs had changed forever. It’s hard not to have love for all dogs, they are man’s best friend after all, but there are undoubtedly more reasons to own a small dog than there are to get a large one.

Walking through the front door of my grandma’s house was always a nightmare as a child. Her dogs ran to greet us as we walked in, sending my brothers and I toppling over one another and trying to make it through to the kitchen without getting licked in the face or knocked over.

I get it. Dogs love to show affection, which is great and all, but I’ve never been a fan of the slobbery dog slime all over my skin and clothes. This is never a problem with little dogs. Little dogs have little tongues which mean little kisses instead of a giant goopy mess. They’re also much easier to control. If your Shih Tzu gets a little too excited when company comes over, just pick her up and plop her in another room! Herding large dogs is undeniably more difficult. Small dogs also can’t jump on you and knock you over, or cause excruciating pain when they step on your bare feet and dig their nails in. It’s not their fault, but why not just avoid the issue all together and get an animal who can’t hurt you without trying. Large breed dogs just

don’t know their own strength. When’s the last time you saw someone walking their dachshund get pulled across the block? I prefer animals that can’t drag me on my knees through the park whenever they see a squirrel and embarrass me in front of all my neighbors, but that’s just me.

Now, I’m not saying big dogs can’t be cute, but have you ever seen a pug in a bumblebee costume? The wardrobe options for big dogs are pitiful compared to smaller breeds. Not to mention they look so much cuter in them. And let’s not forget that literally everyone loves puppies. Kids go gaga over the small playful creatures, but ultimately lose interest as they grow larger. A small breed dog is just a forever puppy! They keep those cute puppy dog eyes and adorable likeness with them their whole life.

Small dogs are more cost efficient as well. They are easy to transport because of their size, meaning they can be taken on the road with you more often than a large dog. That means no boarding fee at a kennel or paying someone to dog sit while you’re on vacation. Not to mention they eat much less than a large dog, and dog food is more expensive than you’d think.

Small dogs also have smaller … uh, you know, messes. Dogs have accidents in the house; it’s unavoidable. But it is definitely much easier to handle when those potty breaks come from a little creature versus a big one if you know what I mean.

When taking all of the facts into consideration, it is easy to see why little dogs are better than big dogs.

Many people say little things can’t come in small packages, but what’s a rule without an exception?

Delta College women’s soccer has large cleats to fill

After a monumentally successful season last year, the Delta College women’s soccer team is preparing for a season with large expectations burdening them. According to preseason rankings, they were ranked third overall, following their 2017 season in which they ranked third nationally.

Co-head coaches Paul Stenglein and Damon Amey know that this season is going to be one filled with adversity, but hopefully their team can overcome. They’ve worked hard this offseason to begin the season with pride and power.

“This offseason, we found out that we have a group of hardworking girls. When [coach] Damon recruits, he specifically recruits people that will fit into the program, that will work hard and work together” says Stenglein.

With Delta being a two year college, player turnover is a massive problem that the team

must face. Luckily, Amey’s time spent recruiting has paid off with ten incoming recruits this year.

“Every year we recruit enough people to replace all of those that leave. In a typical year, we welcome around ten recruits. That way the new recruits can have time on the field so there isn’t such a drastic change when people leave at the end of the year. Every year I recruit people who can mesh well and substitute in so when we play we can wear teams down,” explains Amey.

Unfortunately, this team is already facing difficulties, losing in their season opener to Jackson College. The two coaches for the Lady Pioneers aren’t worried, and know that one game isn’t going to define them.

“The loss to Jackson, that rocked us, but it was a competitive game. After they scored we had to take a lot of changes and play more aggressive, which is the reason why we gave up another two goals. We’ll be fine if we just keep

focusing on the fundamentals, especially with all of the freshmen we have on the field that are starting,” says Stenglein.

The coaches want to stress that although last year they were very successful, this isn’t the same team. This is an entirely new team setting their own sights for success.

Stenglein adds that “with a different team, we have different talents. We’re finding that the formations that may have worked in past years might not work this year. It’s our job as coaches to take the players that we do have, find what works for them and make them successful, not force them into what we did in the past.”

Why you should root for your team’s rival Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

College football season is beginning. Michigan fans are hoping Michigan State sucks. Michigan State fans are hoping Michigan is garbage. And nobody wants Ohio State to win a single game.

Personally, I’m a Michigan fan, and I constantly meet fellow fans who hope Michigan State goes 0-9. They want Michigan State to do as horrible as possible, and I always ask them “why?”

If anything, it does more benefit than harm for your team’s rival to do well. In a utopian world, I want Michigan State, Ohio State and Notre Dame to be as good as possible, but then I want Michigan to beat them. Personally, I’m not an avid enough hater of MSU to wish such pain and sorrow on them. They’re my fellow Michiganders, and I’m fine with them doing well, I just don’t want them beating Michigan.

Additionally, I like sports because they’re entertaining; watching blowout games is not.

Looking at things from a logical perspective, you should root for your rivals since if they do

well, they’ll be ranked higher. Then, when it comes time to face off against them, a win against a high ranked team does much more than it does to beat up on an unranked or low ranked team.

I know that the college football rankings don’t seem to make sense at times, but one thing is for sure — if you beat a team of a higher rank than you, you’re likely going to climb the ladder.

This is especially relevant following this weekend’s game. I saw endless people taking to social media praying on the Spartans’ downfall, and likewise for the Wolverines.

Maybe instead of wishing your rivals to do horribly, wish them well, then hope the team you support dominates them when they face one another.

So, for that reason I am wishing good luck to Michigan State on their season.

After watching that opening game, they’re going to need it. Maybe you should consider doing the same for your team’s rival.

With the regular football season kicking off soon, millions of football fanatics are stressing about how their fantasy team will shape up. With equal parts luck and skill, one never knows how the year will turn out for their team. Many fantasy players were plagued last year by the injuries of star players such as David Johnson, Dalvin Cook and Carson Wentz, among others.

As for me, I had it tough last year. I didn’t make the playoffs, and I barely had the desire to set my lineup week in and week out.

Hopefully, this year will be different. The tone for the year is always set with the draft, and looking back, I think I drafted pretty well.

I had the fifth overall pick in an eight-man league with standard scoring and a snake style draft. Here is how things shaped up: Round 1: Antonio Brown, 5th overall In most standard scoring leagues, the higher tier running backs are gone by the fifth pick. The same was true for me with Gurley and Bell going first and second, respectively, followed by Johnson and Elliott, in that order. Kamara was tempting, but I figured I couldn’t go wrong taking the most productive receiver in the NFL. Round 2: DeAndre Hopkins, 12th overall I had just watched Kareem Hunt and Dalvin Cook come off the board before me, and watched multiple people pass up on DeAndre Hopkins. I figured if I took him now, I’d be stacked with wide receivers and not have to worry about them throughout the season. Potential regrets here include not taking LeSean McCoy or Devonta Freeman, but Hopkins seemed a good value at 12th.

Round 3: Rob Gronkowski, 21st overall I’m sure all of you think I’m insane. Third round and I don’t have a single running back on my team yet. Maybe I’ll live to regret it, but only time will tell. In the third round, I take the best tight end in the league off the board, feeling pretty confident now that I have three consistent performers. Additionally, the only running back remaining that was taken in this round was Christian McCaffrey, who I think is a good pick for PPR, although I wasn’t impressed with his performance last year.

Round 4: Jordan Howard, 28th overall After a tough sophomore season, many analysts are low on Jordan Howard. I expect him to bounce back in a big way and think this will be a steal as the season progresses.

Round 5: Mike Evans, 37th overall Mike Evans and Jameis Winston have a special connection.

He is the top receiver for the Buccaneers and I expect him to bounce back from a lackluster year, placing within the top three for receiving touchdowns by the end of the year.

His current career goal is to work in radio, TV or anything that has to do with video or audio editing. Classic rock is his favorite music, and he is more than happy to recommend good albums. Aside from collecting records, other things he enjoys doing in his spare time include bike riding, drawing and outdoor cooking.
