Contest returns to LAND BbYy PpHhIiLlIiPp WwIiNnTtEeRrSsTtEeIiNn SsTtAaFfFf RrEePpOoRrTtEeRr The Liberal Arts and Network Development (LAND) Student Writing contest is back this fall. In this creative writing competition students can submit their works, and win cash prizes in return.

The LAND contest is open to any student enrolled in a twoyear college of Michigan and is comprised of three categories under which students can submit their handmade literature: essays, fiction, and poetry.

The prizes for the local contest

entries are $75 for first place and $45 for second place; both of these students earn a Certificate of Merit and their entries are entered into the statewide competition.

For the statewide competition, first place wins $150, second place wins $100, and third place wins $50. Additionally, the winners of the statewide competition have their entries published in an online journal.

History comes alive by the river in Bay City

BbYy GgAaBbRrIiEeLlLlEe MmAaRrTtIiNn SsTtAaFfFf RrEePpOoRrTtEeRr Amer ican history came to life for many people at the River of Time in Veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park, Bay City, Mich. The event, which took place Sept. 26 through Sept. 28, had people re-enacting history from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War. In the British Revolutionary War encampment, Henry Trippe re-enacted the part of a surgeon performing mock surgeries on children.

Trippe, who has been apart of the 5LYHU RI 7LPH IRU Ă&#x20AC;YH \HDUV VD\V that he hoped studying period medicine would make him less fearful of modern medicine, and it turns out it worked.

He hopes that after coming to the River of Time, people â&#x20AC;&#x153;would appreciate modern medicine more and jeer at doctors and nurses less.â&#x20AC;?

Kathleen Spiekerman greeted visitors in the Civil War encampment.

She was acting the part of a Sanitary Commission employee, a predecessor to the Red Cross. During the Civil War, her job would have been to ensure safety and hygiene in military camps and serve as a nurse when needed.

Continuing forward about 75 years to World War II, travelers along the River of Time saw typical equipment carried by soldiers during WWII, including a soldierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manual, medical supplies, food packets, and a Coke bottle.

Jim Pahl, who has been re-enacting for 35 years, explained that Coke was the only company during WWII that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to abide by the sugar rations. Coke made a deal with the government that they would build

plants wherever soldiers traveled so that soldiers would be able to get a Coke for a nickel in return for being able to use sugar.

As the journey through time moved forward, visitors saw what a Vietnam encampment may have been like. In the encampment, which had Christmas lights strung along it and music playing, Delta student Nathan Light re-enacted the part of an army foot soldier. Light, a mechanical engineering major, said he hopes peo-

ple get a greater respect for history by journeying through the River of Time.

The River of Time brought history to life for adults and children alike. Ann and Gar Wallaker, who have been attending the River of Time for 10 years, brought their 9-year old son, Beau, with them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The best thing,â&#x20AC;? said Gar, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Is for the little ones to be exposed to what they wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in school.â&#x20AC;? Beau agreed with his dad saying that he

enjoys coming to the River of Time because he gets to â&#x20AC;&#x153;experience the things that are way back in the day.â&#x20AC;?

Tara Nolan, who was at the event with her two kids, has been enjoying the River of Time since she came with her class in 8th grade back in 1990. She enjoyed it as a child and can still enjoy it as an adult, saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not all about cotton candy and rides.â&#x20AC;?

From Sept. 25 to the 28 all three of those things happened during the 9th annual Hellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s +DOI 0LOH ++0 Ă&#x20AC;OP DQG PXVLF festival. The opening night party took place on the 25 at the Pere Marquette Depot in downtown Bay City. The small depot was packed with sponsors, producers, directors, and actors IURP WKH Ă&#x20AC;OPV ´, JRW P\ Ă&#x20AC;UVW DFWLQJ DZDUG IURP WKLV Ă&#x20AC;OP IHVWLYDO IRU best supporting actress in last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Loves Her Gunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;? and I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know I got it,â&#x20AC;? said Ashley Spillers who plays Julie in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arlo & Julieâ&#x20AC;?.

A mixture of music and good food helped guests to get excited for the festival activities.

The HHM event founder and director Allen LaFave said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m always nervous. I hold this weight on my shoulders. I want everyone to have a good time.â&#x20AC;? It seemed everyone was enjoying themselves as the opening party winded down and guests headed to the State Theater for the RSHQLQJ QLJKW Ă&#x20AC;OP ´$UOR -XOLHÂľ a quirky comedy directed by Steve

I like the smaller festivals. I can focus here itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great,â&#x20AC;? said Putschoegl.

Following the opening night movie an afterparty was hosted at Old City Hall in downtown Bay City for music and drinks. The opening music was performed by the Jamaican Queens, a techno hip-hop band from Detroit.

The fun continued over the QH[W WZR GD\V ZLWK Ă&#x20AC;OPV ZRUNVKRSV and panels being offered throughout the day. Saturday the 27 was the peak of the whole event. The day started bright and early at 10 a.m. as Delta VWXGHQW VKRUW Ă&#x20AC;OPV ZHUH SOD\HG DW the Delta College Planetarium. The festival happy hour took place at the Masonic Temple Club Room at 5:30 that evening. Over 30 people were stuffed into a small cramped room with four standing tables and a heat could kill, but everyone seemed perfectly happy to be where they were.

The DJ was spinning music from the 70s and 80s as guests enjoyed free beer, wine, and food.

The happy hour was another opportunity for guests to mingle with directors, producers and actors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came to HHM once before. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been KDYLQJ D JUHDW WLPH , VDZ IRXU Ă&#x20AC;OPV Âľ said Jessica Shepherd of Saginaw. The happy hour was followed by music in the Masonic Temple Blue Room by The Mud Suns (Chesaning), PONYSHOW (Detroit), Hollow & Akimbo (Ann Arbor), The High Strung (Detroit), and Tunde Olaniran (Flint).

The music at the Masonic Temple winded down by 12:30 a.m., but the night didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end there. A secret after party took place at 1 a.m. at Intermission Deli in downtown Bay City. The secret show featured Alexis, an electronic glamrock band.

The sub shop was full of laughter and dancing until the party wound down around 3 a.m.

The weekend came to a close 6HSW ZLWK WKH WKH Ă&#x20AC;QDO Ă&#x20AC;OP ´)25EVâ&#x20AC;? at the State Theater. A total of Ă&#x20AC;OPV DQG EDQGV PXVLFLDQV were showcased Hellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Half Mile this year. For over two years, the Electric Kitsch, 917 Wa s h i n g t o n , has been the goto indie music location of Bay City, Mich. Jordan Pries, owner of Electric Kitsch, has made it his focus to bring all different types of music to the area.

The Electric Kitsch acts as a venue for local artists from time to time but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more than just a venue.

The Kitsch sells wide variety of music and vinyl records, vintage gear, clothing, knick knacks and guitar and bass accessories. They also provide services such as stringed instrument set ups, nut and bridge work, electronLF ZRUN DQG HOHFWURQLF DQG DPSOLĂ&#x20AC;HU repairs.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Half Mile (HHM) festival included an Indie Music Showcase hosted at the Electric Kitsch, and Pries helped to run music throughout the festival.

Tim Bauer, another local Bay City musician attended the shows and loved the opportunity to take all the music in.

Brandi Melton, a recent Delta graduate, said it was her third time at the festival. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like how much the festival brings to Bay City, it feels like the ultimate community builder,â&#x20AC;? said Melton. Melton also added that she only heard about the free shows at the Electric Kitsch by word of mouth.
