Voters from Midland, Bay and Saginaw county will have the opportunity this election season to choose new members for the Delta College Board of Trustees. Voters, however, will notice that no names are on the Nov. 4 ballot for the Bay County seat. 7KH -XO\ ÀOLQJ GHDGOLQH SDVVHG with no applications for the seat. Three people are now running as write-in candidates for the Bay County Board of Trustees seat: Charin Davenport of Bay City, Diane Middleton of Bay City and John Wright of Essexville.
According to Bay County Clerk Cynthia Luczak, there are three criteria that citizens have to meet to be eligible as a candidate. Voters will have the opportunity to vote on candidates in all three counties. Michael Nash and Mary Morrissey are running from Midland County. Nash has served on the Board since Sept. 2013. Karen Lawrence-Webster is running from Saginaw County and served two consecutive terms on the Board since Nov. 2002. All running are seeking 6-year terms, except Morrissey, who is running for a 4-year partial term.
$4 million STEM grant buys bus

Delta College recently received a $4 million grant from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation to build the STEM Explorer. The STEM Explorer will be a 38-foot vehicle that will be equipped with top-notch technology, including a 3-D printer, which will travel to local middle and high schools to help engage students in

STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math). “The major idea,� says Scott Schultz, chair of the Science Division at Delta, “is that it’s an opportunity for our faculty to work alongside our K-12 counterparts to provide a robust curriculum that will expose students to the interdisciplinary nature of STEM.� At the middle school level, the STEM Explorer will serve as a
traveling science museum. It has the added benefit of enabling students to not miss other classes which they would normally have to do on a routine field trip. High school students will be given a problem that challenges them to create a new device in order to solve the problem.

Most people have gone for a bike ride in their lifetime, but how about bike riding with a group of people while wearing Halloween costumes? Saturday, Nov. 1 a spooktacular bike ride event called Bay City Boo-Cycle Halloween Costume Ride will be taking place to promote cycling safety. “I always wanted to do something like this,â€? said creator, Tyler Downing of Saginaw. Starting at Bemo’s Bar, 701 S Madison Ave, at 6 p.m. riders will take off riding through downtown Bay City to Carroll Park and ending back at Bemo’s PDNLQJ WKH FDVXDO Ă€YH PLOH ULGH YHU\ doable for any type of rider. Teagan Wlodarczak of Bay City who plays the Queen of Hearts said, “This is my fourth year. I like the atmosphere and the people.� “It was less scary than previous years but still very creative,� said Paul Bachleda of Bay City. The

Leonetti (Insidious, The Conjuring) and released Oct. 3, “Annabelle� is the prequel to the popular horror movie, “The Conjuring�. “Annabelle� starts out simple enough; a new family lives in a quiet suburb in the seventies. Mia (Annabelle Wallis), the wife, is pregnant with the couple’s first child. Her husband (Ward Horton) is on the cusp of getting a residency at a hospital in Pasadena, and he’s bought his wife a present: Annabelle, a terrifying looking doll. Mia is ecstatic and puts the doll in the soon-to-be baby’s nursery. That night, their neighbors are murdered by a satanic cult in the wake of the Manson murders. The cultists are eventually killed by police, with some blood getting on Annabelle, thus sealing the curse and the couple’s fate in the process and giving us the villain of the movie. Mia’s baby is born, her husband gets his residency and the couple move to a nice apartment complex in Pasadena, and Annabelle tags along for the ride. This is where the shenanigans start. At first, just small things that
eventually lead up to a demon wanting Mia’s baby’s soul. (Insert thunder and lightning here.) There were some good things about Annabelle. I had to think on it a while to find them, but they’re there. First, the overall plot was actually kind of cool. It reminded me of a mix between “Rosemary’s Baby� and “Child’s Play�, with possessed dolls and Satan thrown in the mix. The acting in “Annabelle� is done really well for a horror movie. That being said, the father did not deliver in this film. He was hardly in it, and it felt like the only reason he was in this movie at all was because Mia needed to have a husband. He never once thought his wife was losing her mind even after she starts screaming about the doll being evil. For lack of a better term, his character wasn’t very realistic. “Annabelle� was also incredibly BORING. It relies on jump scares, which work once or twice and then never again because you realize the movie is too cheap to put anything actually scary in the film. The movie also uses Annabelle the doll to create
tension, so most of the movie consists of close ups of the doll’s face with some music for atmosphere and then nothing happens. While I was watching “Annabelle�, there was a couple in front of me and one of them fell asleep right up till the end when the noise from a jump scare woke him up. That’s a sign that your horror movie is terrible, because it’s not doing what horror movies are supposed to do, which is scare the living tar out of you! It didn’t help that once you finally get to a scary part, you blink and it’s gone. You don’t even really get a chance to see the scary things before it transitions into another scene. “Annabelle� is a bad movie for way more reasons than I could ever fit into one review. If you scare incredibly easily, watch it, you might like it. If you’re a huge horror movie fan, don’t waste your time. I’d say wait until it shows up on Netflix, but I’m not sure you should even watch it then. Don’t waste your money on “Annabelle�, you’ll be thanking me later.

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month the Society of Hispanic Leaders (SOHL) played the movie “Cesar Chavez� directed by Diego Luna for the public. The film was the story of the human rights activist Cesar Chavez’s fight for the migrant farmworkers in the California area who were severely mistreated. The film captured the hardships endured by the migrant farm workers and those who dared to stand up for them. It gave us a glimpse into the journey of Cesar Chavez, his family and the National Farm Workers Association(NFWA) later known as the United Farm Workers (UFW). The movie shed light on men and women whose names had been forgotten or never known, who were heroes and pioneers; people like Robert Kennedy and Helen Fabela Chavez. On the other side of the coin it darkened the reputation of several political figures such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. It depicts the obstacles put in front of Cesar Chavez and the rest of the NFWA whether it was rich farm owners with government officials or racist unlawful police enforcement. The film had some light moments but it kept a very serious and sometimes emotional tone throughout. It almost felt like you were there

Released in 1999, directed by Mike Judge and based off of the Milton animated shorts, “Office Spaceâ€? tells the story of Peter Gibbons (Ron OoPpIiNnIiOoNn Livingston), his PpIiEeCcEe two friends Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) and their jobs working as code monkeys for the software company Initech. It’s the typical crappy job, complete with a horse’s rear end of a boss Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole), and unfortunately for Peter, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. First, his girlfriend is cheatLQJ RQ KLP DQG KH¡V WKH ODVW WR Ă€QG out. She also drags Peter to a hypnotherapist because he’s becoming a downer to everybody else. In the session, Peter asks the doctor to “zonkâ€? him out. Peter’s session ends up getting so intense that the doctor suffers a fatal cardiac arrest and dies. Surprisingly, the session works and Peter has no craps to give. The next day Initech starts to downsize, and begins making the employees interview for their own jobs. Peter, thanks to his hypnotherapy session, manages to not only keep on at the Initech staff, but also get promoted. His two friends Michael and Samir, however, aren’t so lucky. This leads them to hate the company, and they start a plan to get even by creating a software that embezzles money into their bank accounts, and everything goes horribly wrong.

There was no direct impact on them because they were fortunate enough to have to work in the fields only as a summer job. Adella said, “my siblings and I were fortunate because our dad was able to go work for General Motors, but [for] the people in California that was their only source of income and without this happening they would have never been paid fairly.� They did go on to recall vividly their parents joining in on the boycott of Victoria Grapes grown on the farms of owners who mistreated their workers. “Cesar Chavez� showed its audience the greatness of the man and the work he did while the reactions after the movie showed just how much that work impacted the whole country.

Citizens of the City of Saginaw will vote on whether to renew the public safety millage again. The current millage expires in 2015. The proposal for 7.5 mills will result in DURXQG PLOOLRQ LQ WKH ÀUVW \HDU WR KHOS IXQG WKH SROLFH DQG ÀUH GHpartments. The millage was initially proposed and approved in 2006 for 6 mills; this was renewed in 2010 for 7.5 mills. The proposal was approved by an overpowering margin in 2010 – a ratio of over 4-to-1. +RZHYHU PDQ\ RIÀFLDOV DUHQ¡W sure the millage will pass so easily this time around. Reportedly, some residents were frustrated that after voting to increase the millage in 2010, WKH SROLFH IRUFH ZDVQ¡W LQFUHDVHG EXW was actually cut down to a 55-person police force soon after. According to city councilman Floyd Kloc, the city can make no promises of maintaining a police
force at a certain number since the PLOODJH GRHVQ¡W SD\ IRU WKH HQWLUH SRlice force – only around 40 percent. The rest is covered by the general budget. If the millage is not passed, Kloc indicated there will almost sureO\ EH D FXW LQ WKH FLW\¡V SROLFH DQG ÀUH departments– possibly only leaving WZR RXW RI WKH IRXU ÀUH VWDWLRQV RSHQ For citizens, this could potentially UHVXOW LQ KLJKHU ÀUH LQVXUDQFH RQ WKHLU homes. However, Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel says that the city does have options if the mileDJH LVQ¡W SDVVHG RQH RSWLRQ LV WR KDYH a joint operation between the Sheriff and Police Department – a metropolitan style police force. The city will just have to take a closer look at their budget and consider the best way to serve the people of the city of Saginaw.
If you live in the city of Saginaw, you will get to vote on a proposal to decriminalize marijuana. If this proposal passed, it GRHVQ¡W PHDQ WKDW \RX ZRXOG EH DEOH to smoke marijuana recreationally in the city of Saginaw, it means that if Michigan passed a proposal for decriminalizing marijuana that SagLQDZ FRXOGQ¡W PDNH DQ DPHQGPHQW VD\LQJ WKH\ GRQ¡W ZDQW PDULMXDQD legalized in the city. If the state were to legalize it, Saginaw would make it so you must be 21 years old and you can only have an ounce of marijuana on you. Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel says that if the proposal passes, several positive things will happen. People who smoke marLMXDQD ZRQ¡W EH FORJJLQJ 6DJLQDZ¡V courts and jails. The taxpayers of Saginaw City spend $57.00 a day on inmates, so by not spending that money on marijuana users the money can go towards the things that the city QHHGV ,W ZLOO DOVR JLYH SROLFH RIĂ€cers time for “more important thingsâ€? such as assaults and burglaries.
So unless the state of Michigan legalizes marijuana this law will just be preliminary. Pot shops will not start popping up in the city of Saginaw if this passes Nov. 4, but it will make it so that Saginaw city will have to abide by state laws if Michigan does decide to legalize marijuana.

According to Program Director Neal Swanson, the invasion is so widespread that eliminating them is “an impossible task.â€? The suppression program uses aerial spraying of B.t. (Bacillus thuringiensis) or other natural products to control the larvae. New Years day 1998, Michigan Wolverines defeat the Wa s h i n g t o n State Cougars to become Rose Bowl Champs. The Wolverines of today sit at 3-4 in the season, far behind the team of destiny 16 years ago. The coaching staff is in a brief state of relief after a win over Penn State, but the Wolverines troubles don’t end there. Starting quarterback Devin *DUGQHU ZDV VHHQ OHDYLQJ WKH ÀHOG Saturday Oct. 11 with a boot on his left foot, putting his availability for the Oct. 25 Michigan State matchup in question. However, I highly doubt *DUGQHU EHLQJ D ÀIWK \HDU VHQLRU ZLOO sit out against the in state rivals. It has been an ugly start to the season for Michigan, and coach Brady Hoke’s future is very much in question, but the defense has played well at times, and Saturday was no exception. They even scored two points by forcing the Nittany Lions to take a safety with the game clock running down. The resulting kick was Penn State’s last chance to get back on offense but Michigan recovered the attempted onside kick and smothered the clock to preserve the victory. I wouldn’t consider myself a Wolverine fan, more of a Wolverine hater, but I still like to see them have a good season, because it just makes it that much better when the Spartans beat them. I overheard an analyst on the radio saying, “Michigan still has a chance to win the Big 10‌. as long as they defeat Ohio St. and Michigan Stâ€?. The Pioneers (6-4-3) entered the match having lost or tied the past two games. After beating Cincinnati State Technical & Community College (48-1) earlier in the season, the Pioneers hoped to get their season back on track. Almost as soon as the game started however, it was headed for derailment, conceding a highly disputed penalty kick in the 3rd minute of the game. Down one point, the visibly upset Pioneers allowed Cincinnati State to score again just two minutes ODWHU )RU WKH UHVW RI WKH ÀUVW KDOI &LQcinnati maintained more possessions but Delta’s defense held strong. Delta almost cut the lead in half with 10 minutes left in the period when a good play developed into a well timed shot from Abriana Garza. Brogen added one more goal in the 89th minute with a header, followed by praise from her coach and teammates. Coach Stenglein talked about how proud he was of Brogen coming back from a horrendous knee injury, showing everyone how special of a player she is. Both Stenglin and Brogen agreed this game was a must win and was a big boost for the team, record and psyche. Brogen spoke of her performance in the second half saying she was, “out for blood and wanted the ball and the win.â€? From felon to reporter, MLive public safety reporter Bob Johnson has been on both sides of the police tape. Johnson grew up in Saginaw, and crime was part of his everyday life. “I grew up in gangs,â€? he said. ´,¡YH EHHQ LQ MDLO DQG ,¡YH EHHQ VKRW a few times.â€? Johnson, 37, wasn’t able to take the steps to turn his life around until he hit rock bottom. His transformation started in D MDLO FHOO QH[W WR KLV \RXQJHU FRXVLQ and his brother, where he was irritated by the other inmates blaming the police, the system, and everyone besides themselves. He took a hard look at himself. “What the fuck are you doing?! You’re a grown man; you’re the oldest in the family. Your kids and younger relatives look up to you and the whole family is going to follow your path if you don’t stop.â€? While attending Delta’s graduation ceremony for a friend, Johnson decided that Delta may be the key to his transformation. He decided to enroll in the Electronic Media Broadcasting program, in part because there was no math requirement. -RKQVRQ¡V ORYH RI MRXUQDOism began when he met instructors and guests at Delta, whom he had seen on the news. Celebrating Columbus Day not only ignores the cultures that were exploited, but ignores the responsibility that each succeeding settler and colonizer bears. It’s easy for Americans to say Columbus stole America while ignoring the role their own country had in the theft. Americans, and the inheritors of all colonial states, will never be able to reverse the atrocities that helped build this country. But we can begin to embrace the heritage and history of native peoples without resorting to appropriation. Let us continue to strive towards a more perfect and open society. As our nation grows in the 21st century, we continue to face new challenges and new ways of thinking. Millions of Americans, both native and settled, have begun celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day as a way to honor those whose voices have been silenced for generations. America’s past will never live up to our ideals if we continue to revere old icons. Instead we must acknowledge the past and celebrate the history of a new world.
I am a college student attending Delta right now. I have been keeping will the latest issues of the Delta Collegiate. I have an issue with the paper this week. The past I had issues also, but I understand there is a new staff. I know there need to be a grace-period so they can learn the ropes. One problem I have this week is the graph is unreadable. I cannot make out the numbers and it isn’t because I am blind. I do not know if the problem is caused by the printer or the fact it looks like shadows were put behind the letters. Maybe it is because you have shrunk the graph. I feel to tell so you can have a better paper. Another problem is I wonder if checking the spelling of your reporters. This for example in Reel Rewind under Bad Seed right is spelled “wrightâ€? I do not know if this was on purpose but it bothered me when I read it. The third problem I have this week is the abortion opposing views. My problem is not the content, but the fact it cuts off. As I was reading, Miranda Owen’s view it suddenly ended with “dying IURPÂľ $W Ă€UVW , ZDV RND\ ZLWK it thinking it was going to on the website, but it was not. I looked IURP WR Ă€QLVK UHDGLQJ EXW LW ZDV nowhere to be found. My fourth complaint is on page 7 and 8. The list of staff appears twice. I have to wonder if you nothing to put there. Students will have the opportunity travel to the middle and high schools as well. “We are excited about [this] because we think that K-12 students will get excited about STEM and desire to pursue college degrees – and yes, some of those students will come to Delta – and that will have a positive impact on our local economy,â€? says Schultz. The STEM Explorer will also hopefully help to equal out the male-to-female ratio in STEM caUHHUV $FFRUGLQJ WR WKH +XIĂ€QJWRQ 3RVW OHVV WKDQ SHUFHQW RI MREV in STEM are held by women. Delta is striving to make a difference in the lives of many young children, current and future students, and the economy with this futuristic way of engaging students with real world problems.
