Jury convicts man of murdering Delta student

BbYy JjAaCcOoBb SsWwIiEeCcIiCcKkIi SsTtAaFfFf RrEePpOoRrTtEeRr A Saginaw County jury has convicted Michael Lawrence II, 25, RI ÀUVW GHJUHH felony murder of a former Delta student.

The victim, Angelica Olivarez, was Michael Lawrence II strangled to death on April 15, 2013 in her Saginaw home.

The verdict came Friday afternoon at the conclusion of a three-day jury trial in the courtroom of Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson. Olivarez was 23 at the Angelica Olivarez time of the killing. Her child with the defendant, Michael Lawrence III, was three at the time and was inside the house at 1622 N. Bond St. during the homicide, making him the key witness. His recorded testimony was played in court rather than putting the child on the stand.

Several witnesses did take the stand. Pedro Delgado, a man who was working at an auto shop near the residence, found little Michael wandering the streets of Saginaw the afternoon of April 15, and

DdCcSsWwIiEeCcIiCcKkIiJj as Delgado approached the young child, Michael stated “My daddy killed my mommy.� Michael lead Delgado back to his home, where Delgado saw the body in Olivarez’s bedroom and called 911.

"I opened the door and saw her laying there,� stated Delgado. “I already knew."

Board of Trustees write-in candidates debate BbYy JjAaCcOoBb SsWwIiEeCcIiCcKkIi SsTtAaFfFf RrEePpOoRrTtEeRr The American Association of University Professors, AAUP, hosted a debate at the Delta campus on Oct. 22 between write-in candidates campaigning for the Board of Trustees.

The four write-in candidates running for election on Nov. 4 for the open Bay County trustee seat are Diane Middleton, Charles Juers, Charin Davenport, and John Wright.

The debate focused on the FDQGLGDWHV¡ TXDOLÀFDWLRQV DV ZHOO DV their goals for Delta should they be elected. Rob Clark, editor of The Bay City Times, moderated the discussion and students, faculty, and community members attended to hear from the candidates.

Middleton is a Delta College alumni and resident of Bay City who has had experience serving on boards, such as the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce. Middleton has a son who is currently studying welding at Delta. “Delta College is such a great asset,� said Middleton, " The members of that community have a responsibility to maintain that asset."

Charin Davenport is a Delta English Adjunct Instructor and recent cancer survivor. After joining the Navy in 1974, Davenport received the G.I. Bill and went back to college where she learned to be a reporter.

Davenport focused her career on edu-

DdCcSsWwIiEeCcIiCcKkIiJj cation, eventually earning a Master’s of Science in Education from State University of New York, becoming an English teacher and returning to Michigan. “This is kinda bringing everything full circle for me," said Davenport. �I think I bring a perspective to the board that probably hasn’t been there in quite some time."

Charles Juers, who arrived a half an hour into the debate due to work obligations is the most recent SHUVRQ WR ÀOH DV D ZULWH LQ FDQGLGDWH for the Bay County seat.

According to Juers, he applied to be a write-in candidate because he’s looking to advance his life. “I’ve never heard anything bad about Del-

ta,� said Juers.

John Wright was unable to attend the debate due to a vacation in Italy.

Voters from Midland, Bay and Saginaw county will have the opportunity Nov. 4 to elect a write-in for the Bay County seat. According to Bay County Clerk Cynthia Luczak when voting for a write-in candidate you must spell out the candidate’s QDPH LQ WKH GHVLJQDWHG DUHD DQG ÀOO in an oval or connect an arrow, depending on which county you live in.

Candidates’ names must be spelled correctly, or as close as possible.

Nicknames will not count toward a vote.

Bay County’s Metro bus funding up for renewal BbYy GgRrEeGg HhOoRrNnEeRr SsTtAaFfFf RrEePpOoRrTtEeRr

Yo u’v e seen the buses parked on campus and you probably know a passenger or two, and tomorrow Bay County voters will take the wheel, and decide if they wish to renew a millage that funds the Bay Metro Transit System.

Eric Sprague, the general manager of the Metro Transit Authority, worries about the consequences if the millage is not renewed. “It would be a dramatic cut; a loss of 25 percent of our funding would have an impact on everything,� he said.

While no plans have been drawn up in the event the millage fails, Sprague says that fewer routes and fewer buses along with higher fares would likely be required. “It’s hard to imagine any service we offer that wouldn’t be affected.�

Supporters say residents without vehicles often rely on the Metro for transportation. “Many of our passengers have

DdCcGgRrEeGgHhOoRrNnEeRr few choices,� said Sprague. “How are these people supposed to get to work? How will they stay involved in the community?�

Many Delta students rely on the bus to get them to campus and home again. “I usually take the bus two or three times a week, and I’ve never heard of a millage for it,� said Laura Gustafson, a Delta student and Metro rider. “I get to read a book on my way to class and the drivers are always very friendly and helpful.�

Delta students riding the Metro to school take Route 4, which travels between Auburn and downtown Bay City, and arrives on campus every 45 minutes. Tickets are available for sale in the bookstore on campus along with route maps and contact information.

Vincent Mosca is the democratic candidate for the Michigan House of Representatives from the 94th district, according to Ballotpedia. The Michigan House of Representatives website breaks down the districts and shows that the 94th district includes Saginaw Township, Thomas Township, Tittabawassee Township. As stated by The Review website, Vincent Mosca is a high school teacher at the Saginaw County Transition Academy. After graduating from Delta College with his Associate of Arts Degree in 1989, he continued his education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he received his B.A. in English in 1991. Mosca also has 18 credits earned towards his M.A. in Michigan House of Representatives 95th district Vanessa Guerra is the democratic candidate for the 95th district, as stated by Ballotpedia. According to her website, she double majored in Latino Studies and Political Science at the University of Michigan. In 2012, Guerra ran for Bridgeport Township Trustee. She served as a Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan Intern in the Saginaw &RXQW\ 3URVHFXWRU¡V 2IÀFH LQ WKH summer of 2013 and as a volunteer advocate for victims of domestic violence in the Third Judicial Circuit Court in fall 2013. Tim Kelly’s website states that he has served in several workforce and economic development positions in Indiana, including Executive Director of the Indiana Council on Vocational Education. When Governor John Engler asked Kelly to be his Education Policy Advisor in 1995, Kelly moved to Saginaw. In 2010, representing Saginaw Township, Kelly was elected a Saginaw County Commissioner. $IWHU ÀQLVKLQJ VHFRQG IRU WKH 0LFKigan House of Representatives seat from the 94 district in 2006, Kelly was elected to be the chairman of the Saginaw County Republican Party.

Michigan House of Representatives 32nd district Stacy Erwin Oakes is the democratic candidate from the 32nd district running for state Senate, as stated by Ballotpedia. As shown on the Michigan Senate website, the 32nd district is largely made up of Saginaw County. As stated on her website, Oakes is a Michigan House of Representatives 96th district Charles Brunner is the democratic candidate from the 96th district for the Michigan House of Representatives, according to Ballotpedia.

As broken down by the Michigan House of Representatives website, the 96th district includes Bay City, Essexville, and Kawkawlin.

Michigan House of Representatives 31st district Ron Mindykowski is the democratic candidate from the 31st district for the Michigan Senate, as stated by Ballotpedia. The Michigan Senate website shows that the 31st district is largely made up of Bay County. According to his website, Mindykowski is a teacher at Bay City Western High School and has served as their drama director for over 25

Brunner served as Mayor of Bay City from 2007 through 2010 and as Bay City Commission President in 2006.

Carlos Jaime is the 96th district republican candidate for the

Michigan House of Representatives, according to Ballotpedia. Jaime graduated from Saginaw High School in 1972 and soon after joined the U.S. Navy, according to an interview done by MLive. In 1975, after serving in Florida on the USS Lexington, Jaime moved back to Michigan and attended Delta College. Jaime said in the interview that he is a supporter of increasing tourist initiatives in the area and increasing emergency planning.

He currently serves as chairman of three subcommittees for the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, Environmental Quality, and Natural Resources. Green is also Chairman of the Senate Second Amendment Caucus and Senate Chair of the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus.

Michael Venner (SO) Guard, is another returner and key contributor, but he is sidelined right now with an ankle injury but is very close to returning.

Adding to those returners are some key newcomers: Markell Bradshaw (FR) Guard, will be someone they look to handle to the ball and give a spark on Benjamin Batts, Delta’s # 23, jumps defense. ity as a good teammate. Justin Person (FR) Guard, is player that can player either guard position and can really light up the scoreboard and with some polishing on the defensive end can be a really good player.

Another player who is a mix between returner and newcomer is Travon Cotton. The sophomore played for Delta during 11/12 season will be a leader on the team while using a keen awareness and strength down low to score and corral rebounds.

Blackbourn is kind of used to

winning. He joins Delta after guiding Benedictine College to a win in the national tournament. Having that big game experience and winning mentality, he hopes to bring the same to Delta.

Blackbourn notes that a tough schedule, which consists of nine top20 ranked teams, will help mold this team going forward.

Delta’s women soccer team (8-6-4) played Muskegon Community College (5-9) Saturday Oct. 29 in an exhibition game. Prior to the game Delta had clinched at least 3rd place in the Michigan Community College Conference early in the week.

Coach Stenglein and the Pioneers fully aware of their situation went into the game ready to make improvements and build their resume and momentum heading into the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Conference Tournament. This game also was a day for retribution as the Pioneers fell earlier in the season to Muskegon in a game that was “a bloodbath� in the words of Tara Blundell(6).

Through the early going of the game it stayed fairly clean with neither team able to grab a hold of the match. Errant passes and poor touches provided the match with little action besides a few half chances for both sides until Gabrielle Sake(15) VFRUHG KHU ÀUVW RI WZR JRDOV LQ WKH 32nd minute of the game. Keeping the pressure up Delta added to their tally when Darby McLaurin(8) stripped the ball from a Muskegon defender and proceeded to dribble her way to an easy goal in the 34th minute.

The game reached half time with Delta leading by 2 and hoping to build upon their lead while Muskegon was planning how to dig

themselves out of a hole.

The second half began just as WKH ÀUVW KDG HQGHG ZLWK 'HOWD GRPinating both ends of the pitch. The ball was kept mostly in the Muskegon half with many golden opportunities opening up for Delta. However it wasn’t until the 65th minute that Sake added her second goal of the afternoon.

Muskegon never really got into the game but they did get on the score sheet late in garbage time.

The Delta defense held strong but began showing fatigue in the waning moments of the game but it was the offense who sealed the victory by KROGLQJ RQ WR WKH EDOO DQG ÀQLVKLQJ out the game 3-1.

Complementing his offense Meeks was able to average 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game. Meeks is expected to miss about eight weeks because of a stress reaction of his lower back.

Acclaimed scholar gives new perspective on Lincoln BbYy PpHhIiLlIiPp WwIiNnTtEeRrSsTtEeIiNn SsTtAaFfFf RrEePpOoRrTtEeRr Dr. Michael Burlingame, the Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois in 6SULQJĂ€HOG ZDV the last to speak as a guest of the Delta College President Speaker Series.

In his presentation held on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Delta College Lecture Theater (G-160), Dr. Burlingame discussed his years of research on President Abraham Lincoln leading up to his most recent published work “Lincoln: A Life�.

Growing up in Washington D.C., Burlingame recalled working at the Library of Congress, being a ‘constant library researcher’. As he studied Lincoln, he explained,

he found different methods of discovering information that had been limited in published works or hadn’t been published at all.

´(YHQWXDOO\ , Ă€JXUHG WKDW , shouldn’t just focus on the manuscripts of the early biographers,â€? he said. “I should also look the manuscript collections of people who served with Lincoln in Congress, people who served with him in the Supreme Court, and generals and other associates. Have you ever been sick?

When you’ve gone to the hospital you may have had a Delta College nursing graduate treat you. Delta’s nursing department held a special unveiling ceremony of the new renovations and patient simulation labs in the F-Wing to celebrate 50 years of the nursing program on Sunday, Oct. 26. At the open house, memorabilia from past decades of nursing could be viewed, including the nursing uniform from 1964 and former nursing graduating classes photos. The event was free and open to the public.

Delta’s nursing program started in 1961 with only 13 students enrolled at the time. As the years passed the program grew and by Dec. 1967 Delta had over 79 enrolled students.

In 2014 Delta’s nursing program now has over 300 enrolled nursing students.

The construction of the original Allied Health Building at Delta began in 1975 on a budget of $7 million. Within the original building, there was a simulated hospital wing, six hospital rooms and a nursing station. The newly renovated Allied Health Building cost $20 million and has a variety of new technological advancements to help current students SUHSDUH IRU WKH QXUVLQJ Ă€HOG Some of the new equipment that will help nursing students are the high tech mannequins in the simulated hospital rooms. One of the mannequins is able to deliver a baby, another can have a seizure or a heart attack and pneumonia symptoms, among others. Nursing faculty member Meredith Bladecki spoke about reaching the 50 years of nursing milestone, “It’s fantastic! It’s a huge accomplishment and a great opportunity. We are able to keep up with the technology and keep ahead of what’s going on.�

Nursing faculty member Beth Zieman, says about the 50 years, “We appreciate the wonderful technology we have now. We can now bring the hospital experience to the students.

The nursing students are to take working in the hospital simulation wing seriously. Nursing students are to be clothed in their scrubs whenever they enter the wing and have to adhere to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations.

Delta recently included a new curriculum for nursing students. The is now a part-time program as well as one for students who are already licensed practical nurses or paramedics who come back to get their RN. For Fall semester 2014, a new program option consists of students taking classes at Delta and Saginaw Valley DW WKH VDPH WLPH :KHQ VWXGHQWV Ă€Qish the program and pass their state boards within two semesters they can complete their Bachelor’s degree. “Delta has had between a 91 percent and 98 percent success rate for the past three years for students Ă€QLVKLQJ WKH QXUVLQJ SURJUDP :H have about 3,000 practicing nurses in our community that graduated from Delta College and I think they have made a huge impact on the health of our community, so we take a lot of pride in that,â€? said Gagnon.

How many people on campus realize that one night a week great deeds are done, burglaries are committed and people die, in one small corner of the Commons?

The night is Wednesday and the deeds occur in the imagination of the four to 20 people that gather there for their weekly campaign of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D).

The table is cluttered with books, notebooks, character sheets, and dice.

Players said the game, or campaign, usually start around 3 or 4 p.m.

ZLWK WKH ÀUVW KDOI KRXU LQYROYLQJ JHQeral organization and the comparing of notes by players. The game usually wraps up between 10 and 11 p.m.

The game is played in the imagination. It uses maps on graph paper and player statistics usually on notebook paper to keep players and the Dungeon Master (DM) informed.

Students said the game is run by the DM who draws up the map and controls the monsters and evil things which terrorize the company.

There is no real winner in a

game of Dungeons and Dragons. It is much like real life. If a person reaches his own personal goals or, even stays alive, he's a winner.

Even if a character dies, the player can always roll up another for a later game or possibly, with help, have him resurrected.

Fred E. Wagner IV, 19, one of the DM's at Delta said, "I like to create at least three different dragons a week, it keeps the players on their toes."

When asked why she played D & D, one Delta student, Tammy Schafer, said that she liked the fantasy, the idea of being able to do different things like casting spells, things she couldn't do now.

Most players interviewed admitted the game is very addictive.

Dungeons and Dragons is gaining a widespread popularity, especially on college campuses. The handbooks and other equipment can be purchased at most hobby shops.

However, the only real ingredient for playing is good imagination.

For over twenty years, in a small table in the corner of the commons, great spells are cast; heroes achieve glory, and die just as quickly.

Tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: the Gathering are a part of Delta College’s history. The Delta &ROOHJLDWH ÀUVW UHSRUWHG UROH SOD\LQJ games being played in the basement Commons near Red Brix as early as Feb. of 1980.

The current crowd favorite Magic: the Gathering (Magic) is conVLGHUHG WR EH WKH ÀUVW WUDGLQJ FDUG game produced, beginning in 1993.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records 2012, some twelve million players continue to duel with their decks.

However, when cards clash there isn’t always bad blood. “This isn’t Game of Thrones,

there is no king,� said Chase Reardon, drawing a card from the top of his deck. “I was surprised at how inviting everyone was.�

According to Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Magic, “Each game represents a battle between wizards known as "planeswalkers", who employ spells, artifacts, and creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents.�

Magic can be played by two or more players, each using a deck of 60+ printed cards. Players lose life when they are dealt "damage" by being attacked with summoned creatures or when spells or other cards cause them to lose life directly. In addition, a player can also lose if he or she must draw from an empty deck (called the "library" during the game).

The main topic of focus in the debates was the issue of slavery.

Democrat Stephen Douglas voiced his opposition to support of slavery in the United States, while his Republican opponent, Lincoln, sought the emancipation of slaves everywhere.

In celebration of the "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War" traveling exhibit visiting Delta College’s campus, reenactors Len Steinberg and Fred Priebe as Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, respectively, brought these famous debates to life.

Event organizer Heidi Helgren was thrilled with the timing of the event, “We have an election coming up - and many community members and/or students have probably seen debates on TV.� She went on to say that the modern day style debates varied greatly from Lincoln’s time.

However, the reenactment wasn’t totally historically accurate in the sense that a compilation of the original debates was presented

by Steinberg and Priebe, instead of a 3 hour debate. A question and answer portion was also added to the reenacted debates.

Many students, faculty members, and community members came to travel back and time and hear Lincoln and Douglas debate the issue of slavery.

Student Shannon Hardy, 20, of Bay City, commented, “I thought it was interesting and well done, especially the question and answer portion. Both reenactors knew their roles and what they were talking about.�

Fellow student Mason Christianson, 19, of Breckenridge was also impressed. “I had already known a little bit about the debates. I thought it was cool.�

The recent outbreak of the Ebola virus has caused Tri-City hospitals and Delta College to prepare for the unexpected.

The nursing program at Delta College is striving to better prepare students to handle a disease such as Ebola.

According to Lori Gagnon, Director of the Nursing program, starting in the Winter 2015 semester, the nursing program may include a simulation of a patient with Ebola in order to teach students how to handle the disease, proper isolation procedures, and use of personal protective equipment. “We want to be proactive instead of reactive,� says Gagnon.

As stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ebola is a rare disease that was discovered in 1976 near the the Ebola River in Central Africa. There have been 10,114 cases of the disease and 4,912 deaths as of Oct. 25, 2014.

The disease made headlines in America when Eric Duncan beFDPH WKH ÀUVW SHUVRQ LQ WKH 8QLWHG States with the disease. The Liberian was visiting Dallas when he was diagnosed in September. He died in October, and two of the nurses who had treated him were infected. They

have since been cleared of the disease. Meanwhile another doctor in New York City has been diagnosed with the virus after returning from a humanitarian mission in West Africa.

The symptoms of the virus include unexplained hemorrhaging, fever, and abdominal pain. The virus can be spread by coming into contact with contaminated objects such as bedding, clothing, needles and syringes, or by coming into contact with ERGLO\ Ă XLGV RI D SHUVRQ LQIHFWHG ZLWK Ebola.

The Veterans Administrations Hospital in Saginaw has an Emergency Management Planning Team for the Ebola Virus. “We are meeting to plan processes that support the assessment and isolation of Veterans who [come] to our Medical Center believing they have Ebola symptoms,â€? says Carrie 6HZDUG 3XEOLF 5HODWLRQV 2IĂ€FHU DW the VA. The VA is also dedicated to ensuring that their staff is properly trained in the use of personal protective equipment and staying up to date on current Ebola information.

They are anticipating and preparing for different scenarios for the treatment of veterans who test positive for Ebola.

St. Mary’s of Saginaw is also working to minimize the threat of an Ebola outbreak in the area. According to their website, their emergency department staff is using screening tools provided by the CDC to identify patients who may be at risk for EbROD ,I D SDWLHQW LV LGHQWLÀHG DV EHLQJ potentially infectious, protocols are in place to properly use personal protective equipment, place the patient in an appropriate room, and notify the proper authorities.

One way that Covenant Hospital stays prepared is to have all patients who enter the Emergency Care Center that have travelled outside of the United States in the last 30 days wear a mask and report to the triage nurse immediately, according to the hospital’s website.

How can you be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to Ebola? As there is no current FDA approved vaccine for the Ebola virus, the CDC recommends using basic common hygiene procedures such as washing your hands.

They also recommend that if you are traveling to West Africa, monitor your health for 21 days after your return.

by Edgar Wright and released in 2007, “Hot Fuzz” introduces you to Police Constable [PC] Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg), a cop in London’s police department. A good cop, a little…too good. He’s so good, in fact, that the police chief transfers him out of the London unit because he’s started making the other officers look bad.

Once out in the country, he meets his new partner, PC Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), who is constantly asking Nicholas if he’s done stuff that comes straight out of an action movie. Together, they tackle the problems of a small town, which mostly amounts to stopping underage kids from sneaking drinks in pubs.

Yep, it seems like everything in Nicholas Angel’s career is pretty boring, that is until two bodies show up without their heads. It’s quickly written off as an accident, but something seems fishy to PC Nicholas Angel…

“Hot Fuzz” is funny. There’s no doubting it. You can tell that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright worked together on the script. Wright’s directed a few other comedies that you might have heard of, like “Shaun of the Dead”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, and “The World’s End”. “Hot Fuzz” is probably one of Wright’s funniest movies, it’s easy to see why.

DdCcLlIiNnDdSsIi You’ve got a pretty classic lineup going, with the trope of the Type A personality, incredibly professional Nicholas Angel, and the dopey, quirky sidekick Danny Butterman. You see this type of pairing all the time in comedies, because they work so well together. “Hot Fuzz” plays that up big time, but it’s so funny that you don’t really care. It does exactly what a comedy is supposed to do: make you laugh.

That’s about the only stereotypical thing you’re going to see in “Hot Fuzz”. This movie holds up great as an action flick too, and has one of the coolest, most ridiculous car chase scenes I’ve ever seen. However you think this movie is going to end up, you’re wrong. Yes, there’s a twist, and I won’t go any farther than that. Just go in to “Hot Fuzz” thinking you’re going to watch the typical, kind of boring comedy, then after you’ve watched it and had your mind blown email me a thank you card.

I’m going to say this one more time because it needs to be repeated. Hot Fuzz is FUNNY. All caps, bolded and underlined. There’s not a time in this movie where I wasn’t shaking my head at a dumb joke or laughing at the antics on screen. “Hot Fuzz” is a great movie that you won’t get tired of watching, and it definitely deserves a spot on your shelf. On a scale of 1-5 gummy bears, with 5 gummy bears being the best, this movie is an action packed and hilarious 5.

Unable to accept this, Royal goes to lie to his divorced wife and three grown children and tell them he is dying. This sends his three child prodigies back to their childhood home to unwillingly spend some time with their father.

The children are: Margot Tenenbaum (Gwyneth Paltrow) a playwright and adopted daughter, Chas Tenenbaum (Ben Stiller) an international finance genius and has sued his father, Royal, two times in the past, and Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson) who is a tennis star that’s been sailing all over the world, and is in love with Margot.

There is certainly some burned bridges between the now grown children and Royal, and things only get more interesting when Royal starts spending time with his grandchildren, all while getting reacquainted with the family.

“The Royal Tenenbaums” is one of those movies where you can watch it again and again and still enjoy it. The characters are interesting, and the cast is a mix of Anderson’s usual suspects and some new recruits. They’re funny, and play off of each other well. Technically speaking, “The Royal Tenenbaums” is a dramedy, which is the hybrid child of a drama and a comedy, and most of the actual humor tends to revolve around Royal Tenenbaum himself.

The fact that his family is really eccentric only seems to add interest into everything, and Royal’s the type of character that always has a joke for

promise, but it gets really serious really fast to a song by Elliott Smith and (% $ %% well… you’ll have to watch it to see MmEeNn IiNn TtIiGgHhTtSs what I mean.

The humor in “The Royal Tenenbaums”" can be a bit dry at times.

Sometimes a joke will fall flat, or the characters won’t hang on the punchline long enough for the audience to laugh, but again, that’s Anderson’s style. You either love it or hate it, kind of like black licorice. I’d even go so far as to say that there’s more drama than comedy, and the themes get really dark, but it’s still an incredibly interesting film to watch.

“The Royal Tenenbaums” has to be one of my favorite Anderson films to watch because I find the characters in it ridiculously funny, and the set design in the movie is really lovely. Does it make me laugh until soda squirts out my nose? No. There’s a bit too much drama in the movie for me to do that, but the overall situation that Royal gets himself into and the bizarreness of his family keep the movie interesting and it keeps me chuckling to myself all throughout. It’s consistent, it flows well, the soundtrack is nice, the characters are funny and they can actually get a little heartwarming at times. On a scale of 1 to 5 gummy bears, with 5 gummy bears being the best, “The Royal Tenenbaums” gets 4 gummy bears.

If elected, advocating for the community, students and faculty will be a priority for Davenport. “I would want the board to be my advocate. Not just someone who runs the meeting, but to advocate. I am going to be an advocate for the students, for the community and when needed I will be an advocate for the faculty. Advocacy is about having energy, passion and desire. That’s what I know,� said Davenport.

Charin Davenport already has a relationship with the students and faculty at Delta College, as well as a variety of experience in academia and community service and that is why the Delta Collegiate endorses her for the open Bay County seat on Delta College’s Board of Trustees.

It’s time to spark a new perspective on Marijuana BbYy MmAaRrYy JjAaNnEe GgUuEeSsTt CcOoLlUuMmNnIiSsTt Marijuana is a beautiful thing, people around the nation are slowly but surely starting to see that as well. According to Marijuana Policy Project, “Fifty-seven percent of Americans live in states that have reformed their marijuana laws by allowing medical marijuana, imposing D Ă€QH Âł QRW SRVVLEOH MDLO WLPH Âł on marijuana possession, or making marijuana legally available and regulated for adults’ use. With polls showing that a majority of Americans support making marijuana use legal, and with 86% support for allowing medical marijuana, lawmakers are increasingly realizing the public supports marijuana policy reforms.â€?

In fact, there are more drug policy reform questions on the ballot this November than ever in American history.

Depending on the person and kind of weed, it affects us all differently. For most people weed will make you feel very relaxed and almost kind of sleepy. Most of your senses will indeed be heightened. For example, when high and listening to music, music sounds so different than what it would when you aren’t high. You end up paying attention to all the little sounds and hidden beats that make the song so creative and unique. Let’s not forget about taste! It seems as if when one is high, his or her appetite will never end. Basically you could eat food out of a dumpster DQG LW ZLOO VWLOO WDVWH OLNH D ÀYH VWDU meal.

Again, depending on the person it very well could affect your vision. Some people tend to get tunnel vision and for some people their vision isn’t affected at all, however, \RX PD\ ÀQG WKDW VRPH FRORUV DQG other objects are very appealing to look at.

0RVW SHRSOH ZLOO ÀQG WKDW they will think things are far funnier when they are high compared to when being sober. At some times it almost feels like your laughter is uncontrol-

lable, and then you laugh even more because you realize that you’re really laughing at nothing. I think most of the time this tends to happen because when you’re high your perspective on things changes, we tend to think about things differently and a heck of a lot more in depth.

As a frequent pot smoker, it actually really makes me mad how marijuana and the effects it has on our bodies are often portrayed in movies.

Movies make it almost comparable to the effects of shrooms, LSD, acid and other drugs when in fact it is nothing like that at all. In my opinion, anyone who handles their high like this or puts on some big show is just immature and asking for attention. I have been smoking marijuana since I was in the 8th grade and I am now 20 years old and in my third year of college.

2I FRXUVH WKH ÀUVW FRXSOH times you get high it will seem to have stronger effects on you because your body has no tolerance for the high, and for a lot of people it actually makes them feel uncomfortable and paranoid. When I say uncomfortable and paranoid I mean that one feels as if they are going to get caught smoking or that everyone around them notices that they are high. Now obviously that is not that case but because of the change in your thought process, one might over-analyze the situation with negative thoughts and that’s what makes you paranoid and not able to relax and enjoy the true effects.

For me, marijuana is an escape. It seems that anything I might have been worried or stressed out about all sort of just fades away and nothing is able to bother me. I notice that I fall in and out of dazes; I catch myself staring blankly at things because I am buried in my own thoughts. For me it really just depends on how much I smoke. If I smoke just a tiny amount I might just feel a nice little buzz. I can feel my

body relax, my eyes relax which gives you the “high� look. My hunger sets in that’s for sure, if I wasn’t hungry before you can almost guarantee I am now.

However, if I smoke a large amount of marijuana it makes it very KDUG IRU PH WR VWD\ DZDNH , ÀQG LW incredibly hard to keep my eyes open and focus on certain things. I prefer not be quite this high, but if you have trouble sleeping or are looking to get the sleep of your life I recommend this!

Another thing that really irks me about people and their negativity towards marijuana is when I hear

people say that it’s addictive. Marijuana is not anymore addictive than any other drug out there and it’s not HYHQ OLNH RQH VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ 1(('6 marijuana. I think based on how I feel about it that it’s not directly marijuana that is addictive, it’s the euphoric feeling of being “highâ€? in general.

Voters themselves will get to decide marijuana policy issues this November in 3 states, the nation’s capital, and Guam. Similarly to alcohol, Alaska’s and Oregon’s voters will be deciding whether or not to legalize marijuana for adult 21 years of age and older. Washington D.C’s voters will decide whether to allow adults to

grow and possess limited amounts of marijuana and in Florida and Guam voters will decide whether to allow the use of medical marijuana.

If there were more people out there that wanted to share their personal experiences with marijuana use and how it TRULY affects them, I think these percentages would increase even more. People would not be so frightened by the thought of people around them being high, and the effects it has on us.
