Board of Trustees approves $2.1 million budget for renovations to Delta’s L-wing by greg horner staff reporter

Renovations are coming to Delta’s L-Wing; the Board of Trustees approved a $2.1 million budget to remodel parts of the wing to accommodate new equipment. The plan is possible thanks to a grant Delta received from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Along with approving the budget the Board also authorized administration and the Facilities Department to pursue contracts for the proposed project. The majority of the funding for the renovation will come from the grant the college received in February from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Delta will provide $639,440 which exceeds the 25 percent minimum the grant requires in matching funds; the grant provided by the MEDC will provide the remaining 75 percent of the funding totalling $1,569,005.

“This was a competitive grant proposal, and not all community colleges got it,” said President Jean Goodnow. “We greatly appreciate it.”

and artificial intelligence, oh my! Directed by Neill Blomkamp (“Elysium,” “District 9”) and released in 2015 “Chappie” tells the story of tech genius Deon Wilson (Dev Patel) who works for company giant Tetra Vaal.

Tetra Vaal is responsible for supplying the Johannesburg, South African government with police robots called “Scouts,” used for fighting rampant crime. Wilson is determined to create a robot that utilizes can feel.

After a failed attempt at getting his boss Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver) to let him test his latest A.I. program on one of the Scouts that was destroyed in a police shootout, he decides to take matters into his own hands and test it out anyway. However, in the midst of stealing the robot he needs from headquarters, he is carjacked and kidnapped by criminals Ninja (Ninja), and Yolandi (Yolandi Visser). The two criminals want the robot powered up so it can assist them in a heist, so Wilson installs the software. The robot acts like it’s in the early stages of childhood upon awakening, so they have to teach the robot and help it to learn.

This is probably where the movie “Chappie” goes downhill. A great majority of the movie is spent viewing the yapping and yelling between the criminals and

robot, trying to get it to learn quickly so it will know what to do during the heist.

This is not what I signed up for when I went to see this movie, I expected there to be a lot more action.

The wacky looking criminals in the Ninja are a South African rap duo called “Die Antwoord.” Blomkamp not only cast them, but used their music as the backdrop Fink U Freeky” is any indicator, the director took the movie title from the song too. So if you go look at some of their music videos, and then go see the

Personally I think their music is terrible, so I don’t recommend viewing or hearing any of it (unless profanity laced lyrics, with a dash of “Alvin and the Chipmunks” helium voices are your thing). They even start spray painting Ninja’s real tattoos all over Chappie during the movie. with the plot involving Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman). He is a former soldier who is also inventing a police robot called “MOOSE” which is larger than the scouts.

Moore is having a hard time getting funding for his project and any police department to buy the “MOOSE” because it is overkill. He is mad at Wilson because

he wants his machine to have the time to shine, instead of the Scouts. So when he cohorts he is determined to wipe them off the map.

The cinematography in “Chappie” was made to highlight grit and crime, because let’s face it that’s the way “Die Antwoord” try to market themselves.

Which is why the music fits as the backdrop sound. The squabbling between robot and criminals got old after a while, boring. So if you go to this movie for the beginning and the end you are in business.

The plot lacked originality as well, because there were strong elements of the For example the idea that consciousness can be uploaded to a server, or in this case the robots.

Ultimately, I wouldn’t have wasted the time to go view this movie if I knew it was going to be an advertisement for “Die Antwoord.” So is “Chappie” worthwhile? I think you can wait to see this movie when it comes to DVD; there wasn’t enough action to make it worth the trip to see it on the big screen.

“A Flourish and A Spoil” is the newest album from the ever so talented band The Districts. This four person band from Pennsylvania, all between the ages of 18 and 20, has been creating a name for themselves due to the release of their new album. Indie-rock, american soul and blues-infected folk (if that’s even a thing) is what oozes out of “A Flourish and A Spoil.”

So instead of following your natural instincts (which probably aren’t that good because you’re reading this), lead your instincts!

Don’t just talk about how you want to change your grade, talk about how you want to change yourself.

Present yourself as an honest person who made a mistake, as a complicated student making a hail mary pass for redemption.

Teachers love that; hell, I love that. Teachers don’t want to fail you.

Before the third match-up with Mott, the Delta men’s basketball team had done what only one Delta team had done beforebeat Mott Twice in the same season. Now, it was time to do what no Delta team had done- beat Mott Three times in the same year.

The game was back-and-forth half. Delta went on an 11-7 run to take a 28-20 lead. The game was fast-paced and low scoring, as Delta took a 38-31 lead into the locker room.

“The key to starting out fast was intensity, our team had to break down Mott’s defense early. Mott, as our team knew, had a great defense and our offense had to counter for that. It was a matter of start-

Over Spring Break, our men’s and women’s teams took the court here at Delta in their playoff games. Both teams fought hard, played well, and here’s how their seasons ended.

The Women’s team ended their season with a 77-71 loss to Schoolcraft on March 3. They played well and had the lead into

defeated Mott for the third time in a single season, 59-56.

Coach Blackbourn added, for the entire 40 minutes. Our team knows that Mott is a world-class program, winning district, regional and national championships. In the end, our defense guarded hard without fouling. The refs knew it was a playoff game, and let both teams play, lots of no-calls. In the end, our team knew what they had to do and did it. Our team gets 40 more minutes.”

On March 6th, the Pioneers went on to face the Oakland CC Raiders. Unlike the Mott game, it was more of an offensive battle that had to take a few extra minutes. Oakland had Delta on the ropes the whole game, but the Pioneers would come away once again victorious, 88-85.

The Pioneers went on to face the #1 seed Schoolcraft Ocelots in the Regional Finals on March 7th. Unlike the last two games, the result was different. Schoolcraft started and ended strong, and bested the Pioneers to win the Regional title, 79-55. Delta hung tough and stayed strong throughout, but the Ocelots just proved to be too much for the Pioneers.

The explosion of media coverage turned the nation’s eye toward the Tri-Cities and transgender issues.

Yvette Cormier said during an open media event that she was walking into the Midland Planet Fitness

locker room last Saturday when she saw someone "dressed like a man,” describing the person as "huge" and "very manly."

The employee at the front desk told her that Planet Fitness policy is "whatever gender you feel you are, that's the locker room you're allowed to go in,” according to Cormier.

"He said, 'if you're uncomfortable with that you can wait until he's

#BlackLivesMatter, the hashtag made by three women, has been a place for all people Kenny in Wisconsin, people took to protesting with chants of “Black Lives Matter.” The #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for the death of Trayvon Martin.

Personally, I feel the chant “Black Lives matter” and the #BlackLivesMatter should be replaced with “All lives matter” and #AllLivesMatter. Before anyone starts thinking that I am insensitive and blind to the racism that can and does happen in our society, let me explain.

First of all, let me say that yes, black lives matter! Of course they do! I also realize that there are people who are racist and would say that certain lives matter less than others. It is those people that make statements such as “black lives matter” and #BlackLivesMatter applicable.

However, I personally feel that while yes, black lives absolutely do matter, so do the lives

The only time these people show outrage is when they aren’t apart of a hashtag. don’t have to worry about being attacked in the streets or worry whether or not you will see your child again when they walk out the door. You worry about a hashtag.

Anyone with common sense knows that all lives matter. People don’t need to be patted on the back and told that they matter to know that they do. Black people have been systematically oppressed for years. And now, for once, white people aren’t included in something and they can’t handle it. #AllLivesMatter does nothing to solve the problems in America. #BlackLivesMatter is helping get awareness out about the problems that affect the black community. Since black lives don’t receive media attention, the hashtag is a great way to spread awareness of the

Society shuns homeless The article, ‘Housing the Homeless may be the Cheapest Option’, in the February 23, 2016 edition, spoke of the concern of homelessness in America.

Marisa Loranger, a staff reporter for the Delta Collegiate, spoke to the concern both in America as a whole, and also the Saginaw area. She states the fact that it is expensive to see to the basic needs of the homeless for which the state often has to law enforcement responses, and incarceration expenses. Then there are the expenses incurred by private organizations such as the YMCA, YWCA, churches, and other compassionate enterprises. Bringing it closer to home, she described the plight that a current Delta student, a young man, once had because of the use of drugs. Miss

Loranger believes that it might be more cost effective if society were to supply housing for those without homes.

There is a possibility that this type of action would be the answer to the malady of homelessness, but I am not of that opinion. Perhaps it would be an advisable pathway for a select few, but certainly not

There are others who will simply own problems. Many, who are in this type of situation, got here through their own actions…not all…but most. We are all free to make whatever choices we wish, but we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions. If we steal or do drugs, and

Saginaw animal shelter director meet hopes to recruit more volunteers by marisa loranger staff reporter

Saginaw County Animal Shelter just welcomed its new director LeeAnn Ridley. Ridley is trying to change how the shelter accepts and trains its volunteers.

For now, the shelter does not accept minors as volunteers because they are considered liabilities. Ridley is trying to persuade the board to allow minors to volunteer, especially for high school students who need community service hours to graduate.

Kaleen Strobel, a volunteer, really enjoys helping the animals out. “I just love the animals,” said Strobel. cation online or in person. The shelter plans an orientation once a month to train potential volunteers. This month there are two orientations planned, March 25 at 2 p.m. and March 28 at 11 a.m.

The shelter is a no-kill shelter, but if animals are terminal or aggressive, they are put down. They have cats with FIV (AIDS) that they are treating.

“We treat a lot more sick animals than euthanizing,” said Ridley. for people who can’t work with the animals because of disabilities. The jobs would in-
