Delta student wins two local writing awards JESSICA SIEROCKI

Delta student Jack Rechsteiner won two categories in the local LAND writing contest. His passion for the written word gets his pieces entered in the statewide competition. (Delta Collegiate/ Jessica Sierocki)

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Delta student and writer extraordinaire Jack Rechsteiner won first place in two categories in the local The Liberal Arts Network Development Writing Contest. The LAND Contest gives Michigan writers the opportunity to compete against their peers in categories such as essay, fiction and poetry.

Rechsteiner was shocked to learn he had not only placed first in the essay category with his piece “excerpts of things” but stole the show in the poetry category with “The Difference Between Stillness and Dancing.”

“I had submitted to both categories because I was hoping that if I didn’t win one category then I’d still have a chance for the other. I was entirely surprised when I learned I won both,” says

Rechsteiner.

Writing has been a large part of Rechsteiner’s life ever since he was a child.

“Ever since I was young I loved reading and writing. Over the years that just turned into a part of my life that I couldn’t do without. Somewhere along the way I just realized that being a writer was a large part of my identity,” says Rechsteiner.

He continues to write professionally as a reporter and managing editor for the Delta Collegiate. Rechsteiner’s love of the written word has expanded into his future career as he pursues a degree in Linguistics.

“I’m pursuing Linguistics because it’s a field that combines my love of language and words with the way that people and cultures interact with language,”

says Rechsteiner.

He entered the LAND Contest used the contest as motivation to complete a writing project he has worked on for a long period of time.

“I’ve been working on putting together a poetry and writing chapbook over the past few years now. It’s nearly finished so I’ve been starting to send different excerpts of it to different publications in hopes of getting some momentum,” says Rechsteiner.

Rechsteiner has hopes that his hard work will pay off as his pieces head to judging on the state level.

“I’m extremely honored that the judges thought my works were good enough to take those places. I’m hoping that they do just as well at the state competition too,” says Rechsteiner.

Delta College Choirs perform at Winter Holiday Concert MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI UNIVERSITY CENTER - At the end of another busy fall semester, the Choirs of Delta College performed a set of Christmas songs and carols at the annual Winter Holiday Concert Dec. 16, 2017 in the Delta College lecture theater.

The Delta College Choirs consist of three groups: the Chorale, the Chamber Choir, and the Jazz Singers, and

are directed by Dr. Timothy Hendrickson. Two of them are auditioned, while the Chorale is open to any student or faculty.

Some choir members participate in multiple ensembles, while others are only part of one, as Hendrickson stated during the event.

According to him, this was the first time that they have held a concert like this, with all choral

personnel on stage.

“What makes this really special is that we rehearsed only once every week, and I think it’s pretty fantastic that they are able to come up with the quality of literature that they sing,” said Hendrickson. “We are very fortunate to have such talented individuals.”

together, including “Still, Still, Still,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and “Silent Night.” There were also several songs performed for the audience to sing along to, like “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Winter Wonderland,” and “Deck the Halls.”

“Being in the choir is pretty fun,” says Jason Peters of the Delta College Chorale, of which he has been a member for three

semesters.. “Dr. Hendrickson is a blast. He is very comedic and sarcastic, which are good teacher’s traits.”

Renovations on the way for Delta College main campus JOE THORNTON As Delta College continues to keep their campus updated with modern technology, a new series of renovations are on the way.

These renovations are in accordance to the Delta College master construction plan that was completed in 2003 but most recently updated in 2017. The master plan serves as an outline for future enhancements to the campus. With the approval of the recent updates there could be large improvements to the main campus in the near future.

One of the largest interior modifications involved in the plan is the use of energy submeters. Energy submetering would involve dividing the campus into sections and would allow more effective analyzation of energy usage.

Director of Facilities Management Larry Ramseyer believes that this technology is a step in the right direction and would benefit us greatly in the long run.

have one master meter. If we had multiple submeters, we could monitor different sectors of the building and become more efficient in terms of both cost and energy,” says Ramseyer.

Upon the approved elements of the master plan are additional parking, improvements to outdoor athletic facilities, and a nature trail.

These projects won’t happen all at once, but according to Ramseyer the first phase will be

a large one.

“Phase one of the projects includes creation of a new baseball field, improvements to the outdoor soccer field, and renovations to the softball field.

For these projects we hope to begin the construction process as early as spring 2018,” states Ramseyer.

The master plan was constructed with goals to create a memorable campus environment, improve ease of travel on campus, and create opportunities for health and wellness.

Ramseyer warns that although the projects have been approved, it is a long process until they are actually complete.

“We’re currently working with schematic companies to get final drawings and designs.

After that we can begin to get estimates from contractors and then those contractors can begin the construction,” says Ramseyer.

Golden Corral has room for improvement in its opening day

JOE THORNTON The Golden Corral that has been long awaited in Saginaw is finally open. After approval of the plans to open the restaurant on Apr. 5, 2017 the restaurant opened its doors on Jan. 3, 2018.

As an avid buffet attendee and general food lover, I decided to visit the buffet on its inaugural day with high hopes and a full stomach.

I arrived at around 11 a.m. just in time for brunch. The restaurant was bustling with customers, as expected on opening day. I was served without having to wait in line as I entered, greeted kindly by the staff. As I looked around I saw people’s faces lit up with happiness as they assessed the different flavor possibilities, making me even more anxious and excited.

Although many people were present at the buffet, I credit the establishment as I didn’t feel crowded at any time. There was a great deal of floor space and optimal arrangement in which everyone appeared to be seated comfortably with plenty of room in between them, which makes my experience there even more confusing.

I was the recipient of lackluster customer experience as the staff struggled to adjust to their first day on the job. While at some buffets it is left up to the customer to refill their drinks, Golden Corral takes a different approach. When a drink is ordered, servers are expected to come around and refill them for you. While this could be seen as

a benefit to some, my server took my Sprite away from me and was never seen again amid the chaos.

Setting their service aside, the food that was offered was plentiful and had great variety.

Even for a buffet, there were multiple different options to be chosen from, especially considering it was brunch, so both lunch and breakfast options

were provided. Although there were numerous options – and I tried as many as I could – no flavors stuck out to me specifically or were something that was unique.

The one thing that does set this chain apart from other buffets in the region is their dessert.

The restaurant has diverse dessert options offered the most pleasing texture I’ve gotten from an ice cream machine I’ve ever had. There was also a chocolate fountain with strawberries and marshmallows alongside it, and you can utilize this machine to your heart’s content.

Overall, I’d give Golden Corral the benefit of the doubt and assume they’ll get these problems solved, as it is only the first day of service from them.

If I’m looking to have a flavorful experience, I’ll head somewhere else, but if I’m looking to engorge myself maybe you’ll find me here. Don’t expect to have anything too special, aside from the chocolate fountain. After all, it is a buffet and this chain definitely focuses on the aspect of quantity instead of quality.

Delta enhances Title IX policy AUBRIE SMITH Education Secretary Betsy DeVos rescinded existing guidance on how schools and universities should approach allegations of sexual misconduct under the Title IX law in September of 2017. The federal law prohibits institutions that receive federal funding from discriminating based on gender.

DeVos has since then proposed changes on a school’s responsibility to respond to sexual assault allegations on school property. Delta College’s equity officer Loyce Brown has created responses to the recommended changes on behalf of Delta College on whether or not to change college policy.

Some policy changes include separating allegations into individual acts of misconduct, allowing individuals to respond to allegations before reaching a decision and increased training for staff involved in decisions for allegations.

Brown recommends that Delta keep certain policies instead of adapting to DeVos’s specific proposals. Some examples include: keeping our current policy that complaints will be resolved within 60 days, providing written notice of outcomes to both parties and notifying parents if the student is under 18 years of age.

According to Brown, Jean Goodnow, president of Delta College, has approved her recommendations to the Title IX changes.

President Trump signs Republican Tax Plan ADAM PRZESLAK President Trump signed a Republican tax plan that reached his desk on Dec. 22. The plan, entitled the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, was the first widespread tax overhaul to be passed by the United States government since Ronald Reagan was in office. The first aspects of the tax bill went into action on Jan. 1.

Plenty of changes are expected to occur in 2018, which left many trying to pay their taxes early at the tailend of 2017 in an attempt to avoid new regulations.

According to CNN, some changes include the amount of money you can exempt from being taxed on income taxes, known as the “standard deduction,” being nearly doubled under the new tax bill. The change in standard deduction is believed to be an effort to curb people from “itemizing” their taxes, which allows the taxpayer to deduct a number of expenses such as medical bills, dental bills, charitable donations and mortgage interest.

CNN also states, the tax credit for a child under 17 years old has also been raised to $2,000 and is now available to more people. Previously, people in higher tax brackets did not have access to a tax credit for children,

Illustrated by David Taylor but the new tax plan made it available to them. The credit can now be claimed by single parents making up to $200,000 or married parents making up to $400,000.

The bill also still allows for the deduction of student loan interest up to $2,500. Earlier drafts of the tax plan

proposed eliminating or lowering this deduction, however, late changes to the plan altered this before it reached the president’s desk.

For those getting divorced after Dec. 31 of 2018, writing an alimony check will no longer be allowed as a tax deduction. There is also no longer a tax break in place for individuals and couples that pay a professional to prepare their taxes or use tax preparation software.

According to USA Today, One of the most important selling points for Republicans was the decrease in corporate tax rates from 35 percent to 21 percent beginning in 2019.

So, now American corporations are being taxed less as earnings are expected to go up. Republicans hope to see these tax cuts for corporations inspire CEOs to create new jobs and hire more American workers. However, 14 percent of CEOs interviewed in a Yale University survey claimed that they planned to make immediate “capital investments,” or in other words start the building of new factories, plants, etc.

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Delta College’s sustainability programs were featured in the monthly board meeting held Dec. 12.

Linda Petee, Sustainability and Risk Management Coordinator, and Janis Kendziorski, Associate Professor of Accounting, led a presentation regarding the college’s utilization of sustainability in and out of the classroom.

“Sustainability is identified as one of the college’s strategic focus areas. Overall, we’ve worked to expand sustainability through the college community and across the curriculum by increasing the number of sustainability courses and creating the campus as a learning lab opportunity,” says Kendziorski.

In the presentation, Petee

mentioned the awards Delta has received in the past for going “green,” the Green Cleaning Award being one of the greatest accomplishments.

“We were the first community college in the United States to receive the Green Cleaning Award in 2007. It looks at every aspect of your building from how you clean your windows to what you’re using in your vacuum cleaners,” says Petee.

Another presentation was made by Director of Financial Aid Lisa Baker on the Student Self-Service where Delta students are able to access all of their financial aid information in one location on the student portal.

Senate President Justin Bamberg presented the revisions to Senate Policy 2.090 Sabbatical Leaves and Grants, which was approved by the board. The 2018 Board of Trustees meeting schedule was approved along with the 2021 academic calendar.

The next board meeting will be on Delta’s main campus Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018. The dinner meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in room N-007.

5 NEWS Eye on Alumni: Jay Fosgitt draws his way to the top JESSICA SIEROCKI Drawing since he was two yearsold, professional cartoonist and Delta College alumnus Jay Fosgitt has followed his dreams by becoming a well-known illustrator in the graphic novel community. With a track record of working for Marvel Comics and the Jim Henson Company, fanatics can find Fosgitt’s work nationwide as well as close to home.

“By the time I was five I said I was going to be a cartoonist when I grow up and I’ve always stuck to that. I was heavily influenced by newspaper comics, television cartoons of the time and more than anything I was influenced by Jim Henson from the Muppets which were his creations,” says Fosgitt.

Fosgitt grew up in Saginaw and graduated from Swan Valley High School in 1993, Seldom known, Fosgitt attended Saginaw Valley State University for a semester before attending Delta College.

“I wasn’t prepared at all for my posthigh school plan. I knew I wanted to be a cartoonist but I didn’t know what the next step was so my art teacher conspired with another gentleman in the community just so I had a foot into the college experience,” says Fosgitt.

“Ultimately, I knew I wanted to go to Delta because some friends and even my mom had gone there for their education.

I lucked out in finding out that Delta has an amazing art program, still the best art program I have experienced at the three different colleges that I’ve gone to,” says Fosgitt.

Fosgitt focused on perfecting his talent and switched his focus from comic books to something that complimented his unique drawing style.

“When I was 12 or 13 I wanted to work for a company like Marvel Comics but I came to realize that the standard illustration that you would see in a superhero comic wasn’t what I did. My art was more like animated cartoons so I put my dream of drawing for comics on the back burner,” says Fosgitt.

While attending Delta, Fosgitt started working as a cartoonist and writer for the Delta Collegiate after receiving a recommendation from one of his English teachers.

“When I was at Delta, I wanted to work with comic strips because my style and humor fit that. It wasn’t until graduation from Central Michigan University that I started to look at comic books again for what I aspired to do,” says Fosgitt.

Fosgitt has been working in the world of comic books since 2007. Starting off

by working with independent publishers, he ended up creating his own creatorowned books like “Dead Duck” which was published in 2009. Fosgitt started to be recognized for his work and his career took off.

“I started to find work doing artwork for licensed comics based on the Dreamworks Animation film. I wrote and drew for a comic book licensed from Sesame Street which was my first taste of working for anything Jim Henson related.

Then I spent about three years working as an illustrator on “My Little Pony” by IDW Publishing,” says Fosgitt.

“By that time I saw that Marvel had a

bit more variety for the styles of artwork they were using, I knew I really wanted to try to get in there somehow. Some of my friends in the industry recommended to me to talk to Tom Brevoort who was looking for artists to do variant covers. He loved my stuff and used me for a bunch of projects. Two years later I’m still working with Marvel, both covers and interior art and recently I got to do a little of my own writing,” says Fosgitt.

Fosgitt is anticipating the release of his next creator-owned publication of Bodie Troll which will be released this February.

Creating new characters is not always easy so Fosgitt draws from his personal life and interests he has had since he was a child.

“Creating all of the characters for this book were all reflections from some aspect of my own personality but it takes way more than that to create a character.

I’ve always loved fairy tales and monsters so I was tapping into those interests as well. I would cherry-pick from different interests and put my own spin on my characters,” says Fosgitt.

He is also continuing collaboration with the Jim Henson Company. Fosgitt is drawing for “Art of the Dark Crystal” and could not be more thrilled.

“The Henson Company asks me personally to work on these types of projects because they like my work and know my history with Jim Henson. He and I corresponded when I was 11 yearsold and I have had a long history with the company from that point onward.” says

Fosgitt owes his success to starting his professional journey at Delta College.

“I got the foundations for everything I do in comics these days by working on the Collegiate and Delta had so many amazing professors in the art program who have helped get me to where I am today. The potential for Delta is well beyond what the syllabus will tell you and you cannot say that about every college,” says Fosgitt.

“Right now my horizons are very open.

The dream has been continuously coming true for me.”

Debra Lutz to retire from Delta College JESSICA SIEROCKI

Colleagues of Debra Lutz have described her as professional, intuitive and dependable. Delta College will be saying farewell to Lutz after her official retirement as the Vice President of Business and Finance Feb. 28.

A Freeland native, Lutz made the decision to attend Delta College after graduating from Freeland High School. As a first generation college student, Lutz decided Delta was the perfect starting point in her dedication to education.

“My parents raised us with the expectation that we would go to college. They never had the opportunity so in order to pay for my college I came to Delta for two years while working full time to earn and save money while I lived at home to pay for my two years at Michigan State,” says Lutz.

Lutz went on to transfer to Michigan State University where she earned a Bachelor's in Accounting. From there, it was a natural decision for Lutz to become a certified public accountant once she graduated from Michigan State. As a CPA, she started working for a large accounting firm and taught accounting at Delta College as an adjunct professor for a brief time.

After a few years, Lutz went back to school and got her Masters of Business Administration at night at Central Michigan University and soon became the Director of Finance for Saginaw Township schools.

“I worked there for eight years when I learned Deb Lutz, Vice President of Business and Finance, is retiring after 21 that the position for Delta College’s Vice President years in her position at Delta College. Dec. 5, 2017. (Delta Collegiate/ of Business and Finance was opening because my Jessica Sierocki) predecessor was moving back to Chicago. I became

very interested and thought it would be so fabulous to be able to go back to my alma mater,” says Lutz.

After applying, Lutz received the position in 1996 and has held the position since. Lutz believes that her position has given her satisfaction by helping the students of Delta College.

“Even though I don’t work directly with students I know that the work that we do in business finance facilities and in human resources is important to the success of students. I think keeping tuition affordable, keeping the finances of the college in good condition so that the community supports Delta is important for the success of our students,” says Lutz.

Throughout the years of her dedication to her position, Lutz has received recognition from the Community College Business Officers Association.

“It was really a nice honor to receive those recognitions. I really believe that what we do is important to the success of Delta College and the impact it has on our students and the community,” says Lutz.

After over 21 years working at Delta, Lutz is looking forward to spending more time with her husband who is retired from Dow Chemical.

“I will miss most the feeling of professionalism and accomplishment but I’m looking forward to both of us being fully retired come this spring,” says Lutz. “Our children are well on their way to exciting careers so I can rest assured that they’re on their way so it gives us a good opportunity to retire and enjoy all of the things we’ve planned and worked hard for.”

Super Smash Bros. Club gets competitive JACK RECHSTEINER Many people have played, or know of, the fan-favorite fighting games from Nintendo, whether it be the first Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 or the newest one for the Wii U. Not as many people know that the games have a dedicated competitive scene in eSports.

“People are unintentionally gatekeeping people from playing Smash, so I want to make it easier and more friendly to get into,” says Jacob Jacob, one of the leaders of Delta’s Super Smash Bros. Club.

For Smash players in the Tri-City area interested in the competitive scene, the closest local tournaments were all an hour or more away; that was before Tri-City Tri-Hards got started and is part of the reason why its members felt it was so important to start it.

The club has meetings at Delta College for tournaments every week on Wednesdays starting

at 6 p.m. The room the club meets in changes depending on what is available that night, but since starting they have held 32 consecutive tournaments.

Jacob found out there was already a Smash Bros. Club at Delta, but at first there were barely any members. Now the size of the club has grown to a total of 65 active members, with roughly 25 different members playing in each week’s tournaments.

“We have players here who are ranked throughout the state,” says Jacob.

The weekly tournaments have a few different brackets aimed at different types of players.

There is a free “friendly bracket" for people new to the game in addition to the paid competition.

Signing up for the competitive bracket is $3 with a $3 venue fee that can be waived if a player supplies a monitor and console.

Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, as well as doubles brackets for the latter. Part of the money raised through the venue fee goes toward equipment for the club, and the rest is donated to a

charity chosen by the club every semester.

The club also live-streams its tournaments on Twitch, which is a big draw for the club members.

Under the name BlueMilkGG, the Tri-City Tri-Hards produce

a high-quality videostream that gets broadcast to their more-than 7,000 followers.

According to Jacob, TriCity Tri-Hards were fortunate enough to have a big start. At the time the club started holding meetings, the second-best Smash player in the world came to the weekly tournaments. This gave the Tri-City Tri-Hards an immense following in the beginning, and there have been a stable amount of regulars since then.

“It’s a really good community, everyone here is really about getting new players started and making them feel included in the club,” says Jacob.

Midland City Forest offers full winter experience

Experiment with hot chocolate AUBRIE SMITH Crockpot Hot Cocoa

Ingredients: 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 6 cups whole milk 2 cups heavy whipping cream 2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips mini marshmallows, for topping

Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Add salt.

Ladle into mugs; serve each with a peppermint stick.

Credit: Marthastewart.com Ingredients: 1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped 2 tablespoons Kahlua 1 teaspoon confectioner’s sugar 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped Instructions: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans.

Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated.

Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners’ sugar until soft peaks form.

Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

BAY CITY – Upon entering the Fusion 1 Cafe, members of the Delta Collegiate complained of hunger. We were excited for the journey ahead: all you can eat sushi.

The bad: The collegiate members agreed that the wait was a bit longer than welcome. There seems to be only one sushi chef on site, so during busy periods, the wait for sushi can be a bit much. Especially when you factor in the fasting that happens in anticipation for all you can eat sushi-- many Collegiate members came prepared

hungrier than ever. It’s all you can eat, so you’re encouraged to order more rolls as you go, but when it takes almost an hour to get your rolls--who has time for that?

The price seemed a bit extensive. Though sushi in general can be an expensive dish, paying over $17 per person is a pretty expensive evening, especially in Bay City. Maybe lower the price and make the appetizer optional for an additional cost? Just a business suggestion.

There were some things that caused red flags. The Collegiate agreed that it is a hard place to just stop by when you’re craving some sushi, and it’s not the most couple friendly place with the price. Ireland study abroad trip filling up fast JOE THORNTON Delta College is currently offering a study abroad trip to County Donegal, Ireland and spots are filling up quickly. Sustainability & Risk Management Coordinator Linda Petee says only seven seats are currently available and urges students to sign up soon.

This excursion gives students a chance to earn academic credit in the beautiful country of Ireland, focusing on the different aspects of Ireland that make it a sustainable country.

Petee notes that a great amount of thought went into choosing Ireland as a destination for study abroad this year and encourages anyone who is interested to register.

“We chose Ireland because they are naturally green. They stay true to most of their traditions and culture. They’re still hanging clothes on lines over there and instead of light switches have switches that turn off all electricity in a given room,” says Petee.

This study abroad trip is an opportunity to be immersed in a new culture. During the stay in Ireland you can become familiar with the Gaelic language, traverse the lush landscape and appreciate various kinds of art.

Petee says that study abroad programs give a chance to experience the world alongside fellow students and change your outlook on the world.

“Everyone in the airport is quiet and reserved but by the time we come back everyone is full of laughter and has made new friends. I’m personally always fascinated by the fact that I can get on a plane and be in an entirely new culture after just one day of travel,” states Petee.

Delta professor Wrights his way into graphic novel industry JESSICA SIEROCKI

Every teacher at Delta College has their own special something outside of the classroom that makes them unique. For English professor Greg Wright, comic books is more than just a hobby; it’s a part time job.

Wright has been writing scripts for his own graphic novels

since 2014 and travels around the country to different Comic Cons to showcase his work.

“It’s something I care a lot about and always have, but it’s only been the past couple of years that I wanted to write comic book scripts,” says Wright.

Writing has always been an

interest to Wright. He graduated Michigan State in 2007 with a P.h.D in Contemporary American Literature and Film and applied his expertise to the art of comic book scripts. Ever since he could remember, Wright wanted comic books to have a bigger role in his future.

“One of my first memories is writing and drawing. I was always creating stories as a kid.

I didn’t know if I wanted to be a cartoonist or a novelist or a graphic designer so I would endlessly fill up notebooks with ideas that I don’t even use now. But it was fun and I think it helped build up skills and comfort with dealing with fictional characters in a fictional world,” says Wright.

“Wild Bullets” was the first graphic novel of Wright’s that was published in 2015. Shortly after, he started working with various artists to expand

his collection by publishing “Holliston” and “Monstrous.”

New editions of his original works are coming out throughout the year. Wright is also excited because 2018 also holds the release of a new series called “Last Monster Standing.”

“It’s basically just giant monsters invade Tokyo and then they get their own reality show,” says Wright.

Working as a teacher full time and pursuing his dreams is not always easy to juggle, but Wright says it is important to find a balance.

“It’s a lot of hustle, it’s a lot of time, and I try to being doing a little bit of everything all the time. Teaching always comes first because I would never want to shortchange students so if I get spare time after gading assignments I am usually writing,” says Wright.

“I try to get out there and

meet a lot of people and I think I’ve gotten really good at it. Being able to talk to people and show them what stories I’ve got. It’s really cool to meet strangers and see them get excited about what I’m working on,” says Wright.

Wright encourages anyone who has a dream to work their hardest to achieve their goals.

“Put in the time, put in the effort and make your idea a thing. If you have an idea on paper, it’s something people will be able to respond to. Make it happen in as many steps as you can. Work toward it and make it happen. There’s no time like the present. It’s a lot of work but I think the rewards can be worth it,” says Wright.

The year in review: Jack’s top five albums of 2017 JACK RECHSTEINER while still giving every song its own personality so that they're all memorable instead of just running together. The little embellishments, like the outro of “Art School” or the clapping breakdown on “Summertime,” turn Remo Drive's Greatest Hits from a collection of good songs into an irresistibly fun album that deserves multiple listens.

The self-defeating swagger of Greatest Hits seems to imply they know they've made an album that’ll be tough for them to top, but I only see good things in the future for Remo Drive.

1. Two Parts Viper by '68 For fans of: Rage Against The Machine, a heavy version of The Black Keys Imagine if Bob Dylan was born in the 80s and was still just as angry about the current state of society. Now imagine he was obsessed with distortion pedals and started a two-man jam band.

That kinda gives you an idea of what '68 sounds like.

Before starting ‘68, Josh Scogin cut his teeth singing for the trendsetting hardcore bands Norma Jean and then later The Chariot. ‘68 retains the energy and intensity of both those bands, but instead of musical chaos ‘68 is focused more on lyrics and groove. “Two Parts Viper” shows that Scogin is not only an excellent vocalist and guitarist, but an equally excellent songwriter. To go along with the speaker-scorching, guitarplaying and singing, the album has interspersed moments that add to the beauty with backing orchestras, cut-and-paste editing, instrument recordings played backward – and that’s just to name a few.

‘68 has been a two-piece band since its inception, and the synergy between Scogin and drummer Michael McLellan on this album shows why they

don’t need more than two people. Scogin’s guitar parts and McLellan’s drum playing are like that of a crazed train conductor and a runaway locomotive; and it is one of reasons “Two Parts Viper” is such an enjoyable listen. The two musicians have an effortless coordination with each other, only to suddenly clash together, and then go back to playing in sync before the train ever veers too far off the tracks.

Frenetic, creative, and thoughtful – “Two Parts Viper” is an album that’s as impressive as the rest of Scogin’s career and stands out as the best album released this year.

2. Greatest Hits by Remo Drive For fans of: Green Day, Weezer, Joyce Manor Remo Drive debuts their first full length with a tongue-incheek title that promises these are their best songs yet and that it’ll all be downhill from here.

Remo Drive has grown from their early EPs of catchy garage punk into a full album of soaring sing-along punk. I've caught myself randomly singing the chorus of “Hunting for Sport” more times than I can count.

Each track on Greatest Hits follows a cohesive sound that ties the whole album together,

3. Turn Out The Lights by Julien Baker For fans of: crying to Hallelujah

by Rufus Wainwright Julien Baker recreates the magic of her debut album, which is no small feat, on Turn Out

not me” on “Happy To Be Here”, each line in every song carries Baker’s entire lifetime within it.

The emotion and power that Baker puts forth in her singing and music playing makes you entirely forget the lack of percussive accompaniment.

In fact you would think the songs would lose some of their heartbreaking rawness if they had something that distracted from the harsh light of selfexamination Baker has put herself under for the sake of these songs. The loneliness of her presence and her presence alone on these recordings underscores the troubles that Baker opens up about on this album.

Baker lights her emotional hardships ablaze with her evocations on this album and turns them into a devastatingly bright torch. This illumination shines light on the inner turmoil she’s fought through and Baker has won an incredibly powerful album from those battles. Turn Out The Lights is a beacon of

“This is the shoegaze album your mom warned you about.”

The Lights. Not only that, but she expands upon her intimate confessional songs into roomshaking teary-eyed hymns that sing a gospel of self-loathing, loneliness, and a defiant hopefulness.

Growing up as a queer Christian in Tennessee, wrestling with herself and her identity has always been a focal point for Baker’s songwriting. Now she has learned how to use her vibrant voice to let out what’s been building up within her over a lifetime. Whether it’s the slight crack in her voice on “Everything That Helps You Sleep” or the way she stretches out the words “why

understanding and relatability for people struggling with those same issues and the beauty of that isn't something that can easily be put down in words.

4. What Not to Do

by Perspective, a Lovely Hand to Hold For fans of: Tiny Moving Parts, Minus The Bear, Algernon Cadwallader On their sophomore album, What Not to Do, Perspective, a

Lovely Hand to Hold hones in on the excellent musicianship that their earlier works promised.

Crafting energetic math rock riffs with toe-tapping tempos, these are songs that make you move to the groove. What Not to Do isn’t the next radio anthem album, but the band has more of a dance-pop edge than a lot of other emo and math rock bands.

The pleading and plaintive vocals bring the album to life and get the songs stuck in your head so that you’re singing along to every chorus.

Perspective, a Lovely Hand To Hold doesn’t allow there for any dull moments on the album.

With the longest song clocking in at 2 minutes and 35 seconds, each song is exactly what it needs to be without any excess. What Not to Do takes you on a colorful amusement park ride of music and feelings that leaves you wanting more.

5. Precept by Rest For fans of: Citizen, Mastodon, The Smashing Pumpkins Rest sets the mood of the album at the beginning of the first track when sludgy, feedback-wailing riffs pave the way for Kyle McGandy’s melancholy singing. Precept makes a convincing argument that Rest’s members are the worldwide masters of tone; their wall of sound instrumentation is as gritty as the heaviest doom metal band while still being clean enough that you can clearly hear what they're playing.

The band’s sonic destruction is complemented by the distinctly contrasting shoegaze vocals which act like a safe harbor in a storm. The lyrics fit perfectly with that contrast as they grapple with trying to find honesty and the struggles of learning to accept loss as part of life.

Rest weaves together elements of different genres so flawlessly on “Precept” that it creates something larger than the sum of its parts.

Christmas trees, firepits and igloos pop up in Detroit

JACK RECHSTEINER DETROIT – Downtown Detroit has been turned into a winter wonderland that looks like it fell right out of a magical holiday movie onto Woodward Avenue.

Starting in December and running until January 29, the city of Detroit has transformed its downtown area into a unique seasonal experience. From Capitol Park to Cadillac Square – and plenty of places in between – Christmas trees, firepits, tents, igloos and booths from over 30 local businesses have been set up to feature many types of wares and activities. The market is supported by Quicken Loans and the Downtown Detroit Partnership and it was designed by the Groundswell Design Group.

The main hubs for the Detroit Winter Market are set up in Capitol Park, 1001 Woodward and Cadillac Square, with additional festivities along the open space of Woodward and the Spirit of Detroit Plaza.

Shoppers looking to enjoy the unique experience can find things ranging from jewelry to

clothing to choco lates to cards to local art.

Cadillac Square is set up in the style of a European outdoor square with terrarium-like glass booths housing vendors such as Detroit Hustles Harder, End Grain Woodworking Co., The Natural Market, Ashe Coffee Supply Co. and the Somerset Collection. Just across the street from the Cadillac Square section of the Detroit Winter Market is 1001 Woodward which has more than a dozen indoor popup shops that include jewelry makers, contemporary clothing, eyewear, home goods, books and more.

For those looking for food and drink, the market has a wide range of options to choose from along with an ample amount of seating that includes deck chairs around roaring fire pits.

The market has indoor options too, like the heated lodge tent in Cadillac Square that has leather couches, blankets, chandeliers, board games and TVs or the inflated igloos at the Spirit of Detroit Plaza that have food and coffee options.

Capitol Park is another warm, inviting part of the market that’s located right in the heart of the city. The park is adorned with seasonal ornaments and a collection of local retailers, along with a food truck and a Michigan tree farmer any wreaths, garland or berries that visitors may need. There’s plenty to see while enjoying the offerings of the Detroit Winter Market, as the Woodward walkway is fully decorated with wreath-like arches, bright lighting and plenty of spots for photo opportunities.

The market promises to be an experience never before seen in downtown Detroit and it very much follows through on that promise. The Detroit Winter Market is closed on Mondays, but open for the rest of the week with hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

More than a handful of people gathered together in the warmth of Bay City record store, Electric Kitsch, on a frigid December night to share the pleasures of company and music.

“We thought it’d be fun to have an end of the year holiday extravaganza so we put this shindig together,” says Electric Kitsch owner, Jordan Pries.

On Friday, Dec. 22, Electric Kitsch kept their doors open late and dimmed the lights for their Holiday Music Party, which featured performances from singersongwriter Ben Childs, avant-garde jazz from Donovan Boxey and Dominic Bierenga and mod-psych rock from Henry Walters.

“All the artists asked to play a show around the same time and it just so happened to fall together perfectly. None of the artists had met each other before the show was put together so we got a nice, diverse lineup,” says Pries.

After driving from Caro for the show, Childs starts the event with songs about love, rain and galaxies that serve to help audience members forget the ice and snow outside. The indie-folk songs by Childs have

a summertime feel to them that adds to the coziness of the store.

“This show sounded like a cool thing to go to because there aren’t a ton of experimental jazz musicians that play in Bay City. I was surprised by how much I liked all the music tonight,” says show attendee, Matt Grimmer.

Following after Childs, Boxey and Bierenga performed a set of eclectic free jazz pieces played on a wide range of brass instruments and percussion. One song featured a kazoo, a slide whistle, a tambourine and a finale of dual saxophones.

The jazz duo were playing Electric Kitsch as part of their tour through Michigan to promote their new album, “As Iron Sharpens Iron.”

Closing out the night was Bay City local Henry Walters. Walters took the stage with guitar, amp and plenty of pedals and finished the night with swirling psych rock songs. Throughout the entire night the songs were a mix of original compositions and holiday classics, which had the crowd either vigorously clapping their applause or joyfully singing along.

12 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Things to do in the new year Art around the school JACK RECHSTEINER After two months of staying busy with festive feasts, family obligations and ringing in the holidays, it’s easy for winter to feel like a guest that’s overstaying its welcome. It’s still below freezing and it’s still getting dark by 6 p.m. even though the sun is supposedly staying out one minute longer with each new day. The cold days followed by long nights can bring on cabin fever and seasonal affective disorder for many people that are wishing that spring would finally just get here already.

Here at the Collegiate, we consulted with local meteorologists, unverified fortune-tellers and farmer’s almanacs only to find out that we can’t do anything to change the seasons. So instead of meddling with the natural order of the weather, we’ve put together a list of things to do in the new year.

Loch Coffee Poetry Open Mic 309 Dartmouth Drive, Midland Thursday, January 25 at 6 p.m.

Loch Coffee Company is a new addition to the Tri-Cities scene. Owner, Jim M. Adame, has wasted no time establishing a consistent schedule of events to cater to a social and artistic demographic. One of the more popular recurring events has been a series of different open mic nights. Normally they feature any and all kinds of performances, however, the January 25 open mic will feature poetry readings exclusively. The open mic is free, starts at 6 p.m. and allows anyone who wants to sign up perform.

The reception for this new exhibition will be held Thursday, January 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. The University Art Gallery is intended as a cultural resource to the local community and as such all exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.

Giant Mysterious Dinosaurs exhibit at the Alden B. Dow Museum 1801 W Saint Andrews Road, Midland January 27 to May 20 Hours are Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $10 The Alden B. Dow Museum is a local hub for celebrating the arts and sciences. The museum promotes people to explore, appreciate and participate their 14,000 feet of gallery space, which features their latest exhibit – Giant Mysterious Dinosaurs. The interactive exhibition features full-sized animatronic dinosaurs, a dig pit and skeletons that include a 70foot Mamenchisaurus skeleton.

Admission is $10 and includes entry to all exhibitions, the Spark!Lab and the Hall of Ideas.

Taylor’s latest Swiftly disappoints

It’s been three years since Taylor Swift released her blockbuster album “1989,” marking her longest gap between albums. During that time, she has constantly remained in the press: for her very public split from DJ Calvin Harris, her publicity stunt of a romance with actor Tom Hiddleston and the reemergence of her feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Swift is finally back with her follow up “Reputation,” which was promised to be her darkest record yet as well as a complete image overall. So, does she deliver on her promise?

Let’s get the big topic out of the way: lyrics and themes. The signature of a Taylor song has always been her ability to write a song. She’s always had the keen ability for lyrical detail and subtlety (“All Too Well” from “Red” is a perfect example of what Taylor can do at her writing best) that most artists spend their career trying to achieve.

But in “Reputation,” Swift loses some of lyrical prowess. The details are less clear and vaguer than any other record she has put out. For example, in her song “Gorgeous” she sings “You’re so gorgeous I can’t say anything to your face, ‘cause look at your face.” Other lines feel as if they were written by a five-year- old. Take “…Ready For it?” as an example when the whole post

chorus is “Baby let the games begin, let the games begin, let the games begin…” I’ve heard more imaginative lines from kids in elementary school.

Taylor’s bitter lyrics almost overtake the album and leave an unsavory flavor on your palate.

Take the lead off single “Look What You Made Me Do” as an example. In it Taylor writes “Don’t like your tilted stage the role you made me play of the fool, no, I don’t like you” which is just laughable. For one thing, once again, the lyrics aren’t that creative. Secondly, her attempt at being darker is just laughable. Instead of coming off as intimidating she just comes off like a spoiled little kid.

Now, I’m not saying that every song is terrible lyrically.

In fact, there are still some very Taylor lyrics throughout the album. On “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” she coos, “I loved you in spite of deep fears that the world would divide us / So baby can we dance?” These are the fine lyrical and personal touches that make Taylor so likeable. Her ability to be vulnerable is uncanny. In “Call It What You Want” Taylor demonstrates a rare moment of self-awareness and maturity with the line “And I know I make the same mistakes every time bridges burn I never learn…”

But, honestly from a woman nearing 30, I was expecting

a bit more.

In terms of production, this album is lackluster in every sense. Your standard trap beat and hollow synths fill almost every song. I understand that it is indeed a pop record, but the lack of instruments does not suit Taylor or her voice well at all.

The best songs in terms of production are the ones Jack Antonoff helped produce, but even then, they feel like Bleachers rejected tracks. When listening to the album I found it hard to tell the songs apart.

The most distinctive and only acoustic song on the record “New Year’s Day” has the best composition, being a simple piano ballad about new love and fresh starts.

Overall, I wouldn’t buy the record even if you’re a diehard fan. It is a disappointment on almost every level with just a few glimpses of promise. Hopefully she can regroup and come back but I feel “reputation” may do more harm than good for her.

I’m giving this two out of five stars.

It seems that each new year brings its own greatness as well as disaster, but let me tell you, 2017 was one for the books in terms of disappointment.

Don’t get me wrong, there were highlights and bursts of excitement and adventure, but I would log that in my personal life.

The Bad

1. Donald Trump was inaugurated in 2017. Enough said.

2. Mother Nature kicked our ass, and it keeps coming.

Hurricanes ripped through the lower part of the United States causing millions of dollars in damage and leaving thousands stranded without places to live. And let’s not

forget the raging forest fires that are so uncontrollable they are literally burning California to the ground. Family homes and businesses are being evacuated constantly and firefighters are risking their own lives in order to get it under control, which at this point does not see possible.

3. Mass shootings and attacks unnecessarily took the lives of countless Americans, the most notable events being in Las Vegas and Texas. At the same time, Congress has not made any effort to make any major restrictions to gun laws and with all of the Republicans in power positions, I do not foresee any major changes taking place anytime soon.

4. Celebrities could not hide as the ever-growing list

of notable names in history passed away. Country singer Troy Gentry died in a helicopter crash which would have made 10 year-old Jessica sob like a baby.

Another noteworthy death is no other than millionaire mogul Hugh Hefner who left his fortune and business to his son.

5.Everybody and their brother are being accused of sexual assault. There’s an upside and downside to these shocking and continuous allegations. Upside: yay for women who are finally finding their voice and speaking out against their predators.

Way to show up for our gender.

Downside: nothing really seems to be happening to those who are accused and many are refusing to apologize for their behavior. It just goes to show you that people in power are able to exploit anyone and everyone around them with no consequence. How disgusting.

6. Man buns still have not disappeared. Note to all the guys who grow out their hair just so

they can tuck it in an itty-bitty little ponytail. It looks gross and unnatural so can we agree that 2018 will be the year that we finally get rid of the atrocity?

Please and thanks.

7. Fidget spinners took the market by storm and honestly, what was the point? Who would want to pay $20 for maybe two minutes of excitement? All they did was spin. Yes they were created in order to help kids channel whatever energy they had in a quiet way, but all I have seen are kids messing around with a toy that spins. How pointless.

8. Apple admitted to the public that they are decreasing the functionality of older iPhones through their updates.

What a great example of how corporate America is still manipulating their consumers, which is a huge disappointment.

But let’s take a step back and look at some of the reasons 2017 wasn’t all that bad because I don’t

want to be the negative Nelly over here.

The Good

1. Royal wedding bells are chiming once again after the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was announced.

Honestly, royal weddings are the best for the sole reason that everyone around the world gets excited over a positive event. It’s like the world stops and basks in the glow of love and happiness, even for the briefest of moments.

2. Mattel came out with the first Hijab-wearing Barbie which is a huge leap forward in terms of equality for women. We are finally in an age where we can make it socially acceptable to take our differences in stride and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

All I’m saying is that 2017 pretty much sucked and I’m really (only slightly) looking forward to 2018 being a better year. But if I’m being completely honest, there has not been the greatest track record in the past.

Net neutrality repeal endangers all internet users

For anyone who uses the Internet, you’re probably well aware what net neutrality is and what is happening with it. For those who don’t, net neutrality is the principle that internet providers must treat all data the same. This means that internet providers are unable to block, charge money or slow down the use of certain websites. Under this principle, all internet pages are equal and you surf at the same speed for a given website at the price of your monthly bill.

The problem comes in with the Federal Communications Commission, specifically their

Republican chairman Ajit Pai. On Dec. 14, 2017 the FCC approved Pai’s plan to repeal net neutrality and the first step was taken to remove this essential part of our society that many of us take for granted. At best, internet users could expect to see microtransactions within your internet bill and having to pay extra for faster streaming on Netflix, YouTube and other companies. At worst, companies would be free to make their competitors websites sluggish.

AT&T as an internet provider could slow down Verizon’s website or block any material that they deem unfit for their streaming services, which shouldn’t be a thing.

The Collegiate sees net neutrality as a necessity in an ever-changing and -evolving technological world. The internet is a gateway in today’s world including knowledge, culture,

and leisure. Many households have done everything in their power to maximize their internet speed through purchases of strong routers and modems to purchasing stronger bandwidth.

Net neutrality makes the internet a fair space with free speech and open networks to all websites. Most consumers would benefit from net neutrality, unless they are someone who seldom uses the internet, but even so, why ruin a good thing for the rest of us? Most college students are dependant on the internet for coursework as well as social interaction. Free speech is allowed, and people can access whatever they choose at the same speed for everything. Seems like a pretty good deal, right?

This all brings about the question: Who serves to benefit from a repeal in net neutrality?

The ones who have the most to gain are internet service

providers. These companies like Comcast, Charter and AT&T could now be the proprietors of new income through paid prioritization. As such dominant companies in the nation today, they have the ability to take away or at the very least influence what customers are exposed to which impedes on our right as consumers. Why should a company control what we see on the Internet?

With net neutrality repealed, these provider services could offer higher speeds to organizations and companies that paid them more. Another beneficiary would be the people who are paying for this prioritization. This would include large corporations that have the funds to do so such as Netflix or Google.

So, who will be the losers? The most prevalent one would be the smaller companies and startups.

These companies wouldn’t have the funds available to pay for higher speeds. The premiums could push out the small guys and begin to form monopolies in the larger companies and disallow independent enterprise to take shape, a basic foundation of the American dream.

With multiple lawsuits on the way against the FCC, there will be a long and tedious process in the fight to restore the Internet to the state it was in prior to this set of laws. For anyone looking to help in the fight against net neutrality and its repeal, contact your local legislation in hopes that Congress will use their power to reverse the vote. We want to keep our freedom by keeping net neutrality alive and well.

Dealing with the friends AUBRIE SMITH

Entering a new relationship can be fun and exciting. Finding your dynamic, however, can take some time and cause some stress. There’s a balancing act between independence, hanging out with your new significant other, and keeping a close relationship with your friends.

What’s even more stressful? Trying to fit in with their friends in “natural” way.

Sure, sometimes this may come easily, but under normal circumstances there will be complications.

Complication one: They’re more annoying than your significant other You may be infatuated with your new partner, but you have to admit that they have some annoying habits. Their friends happen to encompass all of those.

Though this is certainly a complication, it’s not the worst one. Hang out with them when the opportunity presents itself, sure, but not liking them can come in handy when you want to hang out with your friends, and your partner wants to hang out with theirs. Space is a virtue!

Complication two: Your partner spends too much time with their friends This can be annoying, especially when you’re not invited, or you’re looking for more alone time with them. As always, communication is key here. Talk to your partner and let them know you’d like to be more included. Come up with a plan that all of you are involved in, or plan a date night and ask for some alone time.

Silence will be the killer here.

Complication three: your friends don’t like your partner This can be the worst, when people you care about so much don’t like each other. Remember to respect both parties here, but also demand respect from your loved ones. If they love you, they’ll put their differences aside when they need too. Make time for both parties, and bring them together only on celebratory occasions when the mood is light.

Eventually, if your relationship lasts, their dislike will naturally grow into a tolerance-- which is not the worst thing!

No matter which complication you have, remember that you love everyone in your life, and sometimes that means dealing with people you don’t love who are attached to them. Find your happy place, make some compromises, and enjoy every little moment of your new year.

It’s no secret that Hooters girls are all stereotypically attractive, but as we sit in the middle of a body positivity movement, we’re still allowing a company to fire individual for gaining a few pounds. Where is the growth in someone else telling you what does and does not look attractive on your body?

Forced to full make-up

Hooters girls have a pretty strict makeup policy. Waitresses have to have their face fullydone up before clocking in.

Contouring, fake-eyelashes,

frizzless hair, the whole nine. I’m personally still perplexed how this s health-code friendly when other places have to make sure there isn’t single hair un-slicked.

One-size fits all beauty

Other sexualized industries, such as strip clubs, have embraced the new, curvier, sense of beauty. In a time where “thick” is in, Hooters is living in the past.

High turnover

Because of their strict grooming policies, appearance standards and over sexualized

customer base, Hooters turnover can be rather high. Individuals can be fired for rolling their shorts, not properly doing their hair and wearing the wrong scrunchy-- how stressful.

Tilted Kilt is more diverse

One of Hooters competitors, Tilted Kilt, may have skimpier uniforms, but their willingness for diversity outshines the outfit.

Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows. But what he tweets can be very interesting to say the least. Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me:

On Dec. 28, Trump made a tweet that had the scientists all over the world rolling their eyes.

Because of the “COLDEST New Year’s Eve on record,” America needs to see some of the “good old global warming” everyone’s been talking about. Well, Mr. President, let me give you a short little lesson you probably ignored in school.

Global warming is an increase in the Earth’s overall temperature, not just the United States’, and it happens gradually.

You cannot just flip a switch in the east and expect the temperature to rise to 90 degrees.

And belittling science does not exactly look good on you, so do everyone a favor and stop

pretending you know more than you do.

President Trump has finally given a reason why he likes using Twitter so much, and sadly it was a way of once again attacking the “fake news” press he so obviously adores. But you know what I think? President Trump likes to talk trash because he can hide behind his phone screen. In fact, in a study conducted USA Today, Trump has had Twitter wars with at least five people since he was elected, ranging from Kim Jongun to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

My guess is he likes using social media because he likes to. Can we call that another lie for the books?

This tweet was a super fun one to read. Trump is talking about all the “wealth” he has

created this year because of his policies. You see, the one policy that comes to mind when I read this tweet is the tax plan that was passed in 2017. He may have built greater wealth for his friends in the one percent, but for the hundreds of thousands of students across the country who take out student loans, we are not seeing the wealth. We just are not able to write off student loan debt on our taxes. So that seems like it will be a fun time. Thanks, Mr. President.

What’s wrong with a simple, “Happy holidays from the White House”? Can someone please tell me why Trump has to point out that people do not support him? Newsflash to Donald: Every single president in the history of the United States has had supporters as well as opposers. That is not something that is Trump-specific, so grow up, and if you are going to tweet something, just once keep it nice and simple. Not everything has to be about “poor Trump, why does no one like me?” You are not unique and your slanders

against the “fake media” which you are perpetuating is getting old incredibly fast.

Well this is a first. The only time I’ve ever seen - sort of - Trump praise a form of media. How great for him. That’s some sort of progress right? Well if you continue to read on to this monster of a rant, Trump once again is being his wonderful self and going on about how the media does not treat him fairly and everyone in the media is out to get him. Also, and this is just a personal opinion, the “people” did not win when you took office. We failed by electing someone as incompetent and childish such as yourself into such a position of power.

Here is the big one folks! The one that took 2018 by storm in the continuation of the Twitter war with the dictator of North Korea. But this time, he’s arguing about none other than a Trump specialty, SIZE. Oh, and let us not forget that this little tweet is about nuclear weapons that can throw the United States and possibly the world in a nuclear war zone which definitely will not pan out well for anyone.

Whatever your stance is on Trump, I hope as an American citizen you realize how dangerous his behavior is becoming. Lashing out on a rival with as much power and weapons as Kim Jong-un (let’s face it, any weapons that could lead to loss of American lives is scary) is not a great idea. And on Twitter nonetheless-- because that’s not a dumb and reckless idea at all.

Men’s basketball team ranked 13th in the nation JOE THORTON

After rolling through the months of November and December undefeated, the Delta College men’s basketball team is now ranked thirteenth in the nation.

This ranking took place before the team’s win against Muskegon Community College with a final score of 78-67. With the Pioneers at 8-0, they anxiously await to see how the rankings will change after their recent victory.

The dominant performance of forward Virgil Walker Jr. led to him being named the NJCAA DII men’s basketball player of the week. Walker Jr. put up monster numbers converting on 90.9% of his field goals with 28 points and 17 rebounds.

The Pioneers showed their dedication to success this season, posting videos of them getting back into routine on Dec. 26, only one day after Christmas. They look to continue their winning streak into January, as they know there is still a lot of basketball to be played. The team hopes to keep momentum and carry a full head of steam as they begin to face opponents in their conference and

division match-ups.

The men’s basketball team for Delta has had an imposing offense this season so far averaging 96.5 points per game.

Even with such great success scoring, the Pioneers have held their own defensively averaging 12.5 steals per game.

The impending match-up between Delta College and rival Mott Community College shapes up to be an interesting one, as Mott falls only one ranking below Delta at fourteenth in the most recent NJCAA DII poll.

With such an impressive start to the season it’s easy to see that this Pioneer team is the real deal. If Coach McMath and his team can continue to perform in this way, it is hard to imagine everything they could accomplish. Anybody that has seen this team play can see they play with all of their heart and are on track for a truly epic season.

Lady Pioneers lose fourth consecutive game, bring overall record to 2-6 ADAM PRZESLAK

The Delta College Lady Pioneers planned to travel to Benton Harbor to take on Lake Michigan College Red Hawks on Dec. 9 but the game was postponed. On Dec. 15 the two teams did get a chance to faceoff on the court.

The Red Hawks and Lady Pioneers were in a tight battle for the first half of the game, even matching each other point-forpoint in the second quarter.

Delta entered the second half of the game behind by four points with Lake Michigan holding a 32-28 lead over them.

A well contested third quarter kept the Lady Pioneers in the running for their third victory of the season. However, a lackluster fourth quarter cemented the Lady Pioneers defeat and the Red Hawks pulled out a W on their home court. The final score was 71-52 with 4 of the Lady Pioneers’ points coming in the fourth quarter only to be rivaled by the Red Hawks’ 22 fourth quarter points.

Harmany Williams and Brianna Herner each led the Delta squad in points with 12 while also each chalking up one steal. Rylee Pankow aided

the Pioneers with her 9 total rebounds, 7 of which came from the defensive side of the ball.

On Dec. 19 the junior varsity of Rochester University traveled to the Pioneer Gym to take on Delta. A very competitive first quarter saw the Lady Pioneers take a two point lead as they entered the second quarter 2321. However, the second quarter was not as fruitful for the Lady Pioneers offense. Five points from Delta in the second quarter wasn’t enough to keep their lead going into halftime. Rochester took the lead at halftime in a 3628 fashion.

With the Lady Pioneers stuck playing catch up throughout the second half they were unable to regain the lead and lost the contest 73-51. Williams led the team in total points once again, this time with 11. Delta center Shallon Grawey contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Makoya Denham led the team in rebounds with 8.

Next up for the Lady Pioneers was another home contest against Muskegon Community College on Dec. 21. A lowscoring first half for the Lady Pioneers put them down early

on. The Delta squad managed 21 points for the first half while Muskegon 39 points before halftime.

A second half push from Delta’s Lady Pioneers allowed the team to go point-for-point with their opponent in the third quarter, each team placing 15 more points on the board.

However, a fourth quarter comeback was a little too late to save the Lady Pioneer’s chance for a victory. Despite the team’s 23 total points in the fourth Delta lost to Muskegon 72-59.

Williams racked up 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Pankow shined on defense once again with 10 total rebounds, 8 from defense, 2 steals and 1 block.

Alexis Sanch came off the bench to supply 9 points to the Lady Pioneers’ total.

The Lady Pioneers play next on Jan. 13 when they travel to Mott Community College for a 1 p.m. game. Next up for Delta is two divisional home games both slated for 5:30 p.m. start times.

The first is against Schoolcraft on Jan. 17 followed by a game against St. Clair County Community College on Jan. 24.

College football playoffs and bowl season roundup ADAM PRZESLAK The 2017-18 college football bowl season featured some exciting matchups but has now come to an end. The Big Ten faired extremely well this bowl season, finishing with an overall 7-1 record, despite this being the first year of the college football playoffs where a Big Ten team wasn’t invited to fill one of the four playoff spots.

Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines played outlier to the other Big Ten teams, putting the one loss in the 7-1 record.

The Wolverines fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks 26-19 in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. Oddly enough, this was a rematch of an Outback Bowl game that took place five years ago to the exact day.

Both this year’s Outback Bowl and the one five years ago resulted in a frustrating loss for Michigan.

18th ranked Michigan State dominated the 21st Washington State Cougars. Both teams entered with 9-3 overall records which made the two seem pretty even

on paper. However, once they met in San Diego at the Holiday Bowl it was clear that the Spartans were a step above their Pac-12 opponents. The Spartans had the biggest victory of any Big Ten team this bowl season knocking off the Cougars in a 42-7 fashion.

The only other Michigan school to make a bowl game was the 8-4 Central Michigan Chippewas. Neither Eastern

Michigan or Western Michigan racked up enough wins to become bowl eligible.

CMU faced off against the Wyoming Cowboys in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 22. The Chippewas finished the regular season on a five game win streak and ranked second in the MAC west. However, they could not muster up enough momentum to push them past the Cowboys and were defeated 37-14.

The college football playoffs brought in the new year with a bang. On Jan. 1, it was the Georgia Bulldogs and Oklahoma Sooners facing off in the Rose Bowl. The first round matchup dramatically dragged on through four quarters of football and two overtimes before the Bulldogs emerged victorious. Later that night the Alabama Crimson Tide rolled over the Clemson Tigers in the Sugar Bowl to cement their place in the National Championship game.

The second half of the Sugar Bowl pitted a very shaky Tigers offense against

a fierce Alabama defense. Alabama defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne stole the spotlight when he intercepted a tipped pass and returned the ball 42 yards. Payne would have ran for more had he not been horse-collared by a Clemson player. Then, on the ensuing drive, Alabama coach Nick Saban placed Payne back on the field for an offensive play. The defensive tackle then ran for the front pylon of the endzone and caught a 1-yard pass for a touchdown. The Crimson Tide held Clemson to just two field goals while putting on offensive and defensive shows of their own, winning 24-6.

Alabama and Georgia face off in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta tonight at 8 P.M. on ESPN. This will be the first National Championship game since the beginning of the college football playoffs to feature two teams from the same conference, both from the SEC. This is also Alabama’s third straight appearance in the National Championship game.

Biggest sports takeaways from 2017 ADAM PRZESLAK There was a lot going on in 2017, some good and some bad, but it may have been pretty easy to skip over what was going on in the sporting world. Here’s a couple things you may have missed last year.

Some company at the bottom The Detroit Lions are no longer the only team in NFL history to record a winless season since the introduction of 16-game long seasons. The Cleveland Browns joined the 0-16 club during the 2017-18 NFL season and left it suspenseful for Lions’ faithful. Their final regular season game was on Dec. 31 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who the Browns contended with until the very end when they lost 28-24.

Despite a disappointing season for the Lions, that ended with them being one win away from a wildcard birth into the postseason, at least they rejoiced in knowing they have company in the 0-16 club. If there are any Browns’ fans out there looking for any sort of positive to grab ahold of during this time of need at least they went undefeated in the preseason. If only the NFL handed out awards for the preseason, huh?

NFL: Play the game and shut up Athletes are some of the most prominent and influential popular culture figures in today’s society. They often take to a field, a court, an ice rink or some sort of stage to perform at the most competitive level in their field, pun not intended, and risk their health and well being for our enjoyment. Thousands of fans flock into stadiums across the country every sunday of the NFL season to see their favorite teams play whether there is rain, snow, shine or some combination of the three.

Yet, this is what really amazes me, they are expected by some fans, owners and sports commenters to keep their mouths shut about everything except their sport.

These people are paid to be personalities. They’re encouraged to do touchdown celebrations, give postgame press conferences and live out their life in front of a camera but are supposed to be forbidden from speaking about social, political and cultural problems plaguing our country. Many fans expressed their views as the NFL player protests during the playing of the national anthem continued last year. You know which fans were not supportive of the protests because they most certainly let you know by commenting on every NFL related social media post that they were boycotting football until the flag was once again respected.

Despite Colin Kaepernick, the player who started the protest in 2016, making the purpose and goal of the movement well known from the very beginning there has still been droves of upset Americans claiming that it’s all a disrespectful notion meant to demean the flag, our country and the armed forces. In reality, this movement has always been and still remains focused on police brutality and relations between the police and minorities, specifically African Americans. I think this movement has really brought a lot of good conversations up about race relations in our country but I don’t think that we’re anywhere close to resolving the issues at hand.

Some team owners urged the league to put a stop to the widespread protests by force although nothing ever happened. The anti-protesting owners’ movement can be summarized by two actions that occured last year.

One was by Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones that involved him locking arms with his players following a controversial weekend tweetstorm from President Trump about the protests. Jones knelt with his players before the

playing of the national anthem but then stood, and asked his players to stand, during the actual national anthem.

I feel that Jones only did the kneeling beforehand because he’d have a mutiny on his hands if he didn’t do something. He followed up these actions of solidarity by then urgently requesting the league do something with the ‘out of hand’ protests and claiming he’d sit any player that knelt there after.

The second action that sums this all up is when Houston Texans’ owner Bob McNair said in an owner’s meeting that “we can’t have the inmates running the prison.”

McNair misquoted the old idiom “the inmates are running the asylum.” Sure, we’re humans and we all make mistakes but this sort of screw up doesn’t come without repercussions; especially when a discussion walking a fine line about race relations turns into calling a group of mainly African American football players “inmates” that are running a “prison”.
