St. Charles kicks off Christmas season Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

ST. CHARLES — Coal Miners’ Park was flowing with activity as downtown St. Charles kicked off their 2nd annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Celebration Friday, Nov. 30.

Although a park may seem like a more ideal destination for summer weather, an impressive crowd still gathered at Coal Miners’ Park to enjoy each other’s company and witness the lighting of the St. Charles community Christmas tree.

Matt Lane, St. Charles village manager, says that the Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration was conceived in 2016 as a way to bring community events back to the town.

“We received a tree donated by the family of the late Cecil Szepanski in his memory and we pledge to use that tree as our community Christmas tree, and light it each year. In 2017, a community group formed to expand the Christmas celebration into the downtown. With members from the village, school district, library, Lions Club, local churches and area businesses, we set out to bring back a sense of community around the holiday season,” says Lane.

Lane states that the St. Charles community used to have a lot more events and festivals a long time ago, but those died out due to event organizers either

dying or growing tired of organizing the events, and the dissolution of the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce.

The tree lighting on the evening of Nov. 30 was met with thunderous applause coming from the excited crowd. The gazebo and surrounding bushes were also lit up, adding an extra touch of holiday cheer.

After that, on came the festive Christmas music; with the addition of cookies and hot beverages, a campfire, hayrides and a petting zoo, the stage was set for a warm Christmas celebration in the otherwise cold weather.

“So far, turnout has been great,” says Lane. “Last year, we were surprised by the number of people we had for the parade and downtown celebration. This year's tree lighting was a success as well. We had quite a showing compared to years past.”

According to Lane, the organizers behind the Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration are still in the “research and development phase,” trying to improve on it each year.

“Weather plays a big role, but we've engaged [...] [the] community a lot more and executed a marketing and advertising plan that seems to be helping [to] get people interested and excited about the events,” says Lane.

“We are trying to make what we've got better before we expand too much,” says Lane. “We have the Haunted Fall Harvest on the last day of the St. Charles Farmers' Marketplace in October and the Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration that we've been working to build up.”

St. Charles, located southwest of Saginaw, provides an old-fashioned, small-town experience, hosting a variety of businesses including shops and restaurants, as well as several recreational opportunities to enjoy throughout the year including hunting, fishing, canoeing and bike riding.

Recreational marijuana legalization takes effect, but with firm rules in place Zach Parfeniuk • Reporter

Michigan has now become the first state in the midwest to “free the weed” (in other words: legalize recreational marijuana), and with that comes big changes to the state's law and economy.

For those who need a refresher, on Nov. 6, when voters went to the polls, one of the statewide constitutional amendments on the ballot was a proposal to lessen restrictions on marijuana and treat it like we do alcohol.

This meant legalizing recreational marijuana for those 21 years or older while also allowing the cultivation and sale of recreational marijuana. The proposal easily passed on election night, garnering around 55 percent of the vote.

Ten days after the election, the proposition took effect, though marijuana likely won’t be available commercially until early 2020 because the state will have to write up the regulations and licenses for selling marijuana.

As aforementioned, the amendment doesn’t just legalize recreational marijuana, it sets all the legal and economic precedents for the substance following legalization. This includes taxes — the excise sales tax on marijuana will be 10 percent for all retailers and micro businesses. People are also allowed to grow

marijuana on their property if they wish, though there is a limit of 12 marijuana plants at a time, and the plants are not allowed to be visible without the use of binoculars or some sort of aircraft.

This does not mean that marijuana is now suddenly available to smoke in public, however. Driving under the influence of marijuana is obviously still illegal, landlords can still prohibit the smoking of marijuana on their properties and employers can still maintain zero-tolerance policies for marijuana.

Obviously, any legal adjustment is complicated and there are many exceptions. Many public areas will likely still not allow the use of marijuana on the property, much like any tobacco product. Delta College, for one, will not allow use of marijuana on the campus. Whether it be selling the drug, smoking it, vaping it, etc., according to Delta’s Rules of Conduct, those found in possession of the drug could face a number of punishments ranging from a verbal reprimand to permanent expulsion from the college.

These potential extreme measures have roots in student financial assistance programs: federal grants, loans and work-study. These programs stem from Federal

Title IV student financial assistance, which is under the “Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act,” that puts the drug policy of Delta under jurisdiction of the federal government, which still considers marijuana a schedule one narcotic (drugs which are most likely to cause physical or psychological harm). If you are found in possession of a schedule one narcotic, you are likely to be charged with a felony offense.

Though the Department of Justice under Presidents Trump and Obama have not prosecuted most individuals and businesses following state and local marijuana laws, it is still federal law, and educational institutions especially are required to follow those guidelines.

For those looking for more information on Delta’s drug policy, descriptions of the punishments for possession of drugs on campus or other information, delta.edu has a manual of all campus legal documentation on the website at sites.delta. edu/collegeinfo/procmanual/Pages/default.aspx. in this situation the documents “Delta College’s Regulations and Rules of Conduct” and the “Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988” would be most helpful.

Midland celebrates Small Business Saturday — RETAIL ROUNDUP —

MIDLAND — Small Business Saturday — occurring the day after Black Friday — continues to encourage shoppers across the United States to shop at brick-and-mortar businesses that are locally owned and operated. This is in contrast to Black Friday, which focuses more on big box retail outlets, and Cyber Monday, which is largely celebrated by Amazon and other online retailers.

Downtown Midland, which is home to several local shops, bars and restaurants, joined in on celebrating Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24, reminding consumers of the unique benefits that small businesses can provide.

Serendipity Road, an arts and crafts store on Main Street that has been in business since 2017, acted as the "welcome center" for Small Business Saturday in Midland, providing free hot beverages and goodie bags for the first 30 customers, as well as a vast inventory of Christmas themed crafts.

Julia Kepler, owner of Serendipity Road, says that approximately 80 percent of her store’s inventory consists of items that are either shipped to them or dropped off by vendors across the state.

“My small business [actually] supports [other] small businesses, because those 70 makers [that give us our inventory]... they run small businesses,” says Kepler.

Right across the street is Heather ‘n Holly, an old fashioned candy shop that has been doing business on Main Street for more than ten years.

They sell a wide variety of handmade items, from chocolates and fudge to caramel corn and crisp, candied nuts, all made fresh in their store.

Aaron Gallagher, co-owner of Heather ‘n Holly, says that Small Business Saturday has helped to increase overall exposure.

“There’s always a group of people that have supported downtown and like to shop in downtowns,” says Gallagher. “But, generally, that population probably isn’t enough to support the downtowns on the long term, so anything that can be done to increase the traffic downtown is great.”

With the holiday shopping season attracting a large amount of yearly consumer traffic, the day after Black Friday seems like an ideal time to raise awareness about the unique products, services and customer care that come from small businesses, especially in an age where the retail climate highly favors online and mobile shopping and big box superstores.

“It’s been pretty tough for retail in the last decade or so, so any support we can get [...] it’s been helpful,” says Gallagher. “It’s been pretty busy, pretty active, so it looks like the people are responding and coming out.”

“If you come in, it’s more of a community feel than if you’re walking around in a mall,” says Gallagher.

“You’ve got the outdoors, you’ve got the decorations [...] you’ve got a lot of things that you don’t get [other places].”

Transgender Day of Remembrance 2018 shows support in the face of adversity Zach Parfeniuk • Reporter

On Nov. 20, communities across the world paid their respects on Transgender Day of Remembrance — an international, multicultural movement that seeks to raise awareness of, and mourn those who have lost their lives to, violence toward the transgender community.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith (herself a trans woman) to memorialize the murder of trans woman Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. Since then, it has grown past Massachusetts, extending into the entire world as an international day of mourning.

In 2010, Transgender Day of Remembrance was observed in 185 cities in 20 different countries.

In the United States, violence against the transgender community has risen in recent years. In 2017, 29 deaths of trans people were reported. In 2018, the number is 22 known deaths so far. While not all of

the deaths were the result of direct discrimination, it is argued that indirect prejudices against the community influenced the violence regardless. For example, according to the Human Rights Campaign report, trans people are three times more likely to be unemployed when compared to the general population.

While the number of deaths may seem small, these are only cases that have been officially recorded; but because of simple mistakes (like police misgendering those whose lives are lost in their statements and media reports, or if a family refuses to report the gender of the deceased person), the number could be higher.

Typically, a fully-fledged Transgender Day of Remembrance memorial has a reading of the names of those who lost their lives from Nov. 20 of the previous year, to the current Nov. 20. Even if it’s simply taking time to think about those who are discriminated against for their gender, alive or not, it shows that they are never forgotten.

Sushi Remix arrives in uptown Bay City Maddison Godi • Reporter

BAY CITY — As Bay City’s uptown expands, new restaurants and shops have appeared, creating a fresh environment for locals.

In June of 2018, Sushi Remix’s grand opening took place in Saginaw’s city market.

On Nov. 15, 2018, a second location was brought to 152 Uptown Drive, Bay City. This establishment is owned by newly married Alayna and Aaron Wesener. This unique restaurant has drawn in the locals and brought a fresh new eatery to the Bay Area.

Four years ago, Alayna decided she wanted to open her own poké restaurant after trying a bowl while in California. She had been scouring the area for a great sushi place but discovered poké bowls (bowls made up of deconstructed sushi) instead.

“I was instantly captivated by the flavor and turned to Aaron, saying ‘I have to open a place like this!’” said owner Alayna.

“My job at the time traveled from place to place, allowing me to search for poké restaurants and test their foods while finding unique menu ideas,” said owner and Marketing/Public Relations Director Aaron.

After hearing Alayna’s idea to open their own poké restaurant, Aaron leaped into action, researching the food from sources throughout the United States. While traveling, he discovered there are two different types of poké: Japanese and Hawaiian.

Each type focuses on parts of its culture. Japanese consists of edamame, wasabi and sushi rice while the Hawaiian uses pineapple, sriracha and spring mix. Sushi Remix has combined both styles to bring something completely original, allowing customers to make their own masterpiece.

“Customers come in asking if we are a part of a franchise chain,” they both mention.

So far, Su shi Remix is only located in Saginaw and Bay City. However, it has had quick success due to the businesses use of startup locations.

“On the day we cut the ribbon on our Bay City location 150 people gathered out front along with the Bay City Chamber of Commerce.” said Alyana.

Since their Bay City and Saginaw businesses are in a complex, it has allowed for saving of money due to the low startup cost. SSP Associates, Inc., a property management company in Bay City, contacted Aaron about availability as soon as the

location in Saginaw took off.

“After only three weeks of opening in Saginaw, we had already began pulling in a profit.” said Aaron.

The locals have welcomed Sushi Remix into the community with open mouths.

On Thursday Nov. 29, they sold their 10 thousandth sushi bowl to an unexpected regular. He won a free poké party, including food and unlimited bubble tea for him and six friends. Both owners and staff celebrated until close with confetti and shining silver balloons reading 10 thousand.

Sushi Remix’s lineup includes a secret menu which is not available to the public.

It consists of requests made by regulars from both locations.

The only way to hear the names of the secret specialty bowls is to hear them from the creator.

Once a customer knows the name, they can come in and order the hidden creation.

Local business Sushi Remix has captivated the community.

Their unique poké bowls paired with thirst-quenching bubble tea has put them into the stomachs of the community.

“We are here for the people because without them we would not be where we are today” both of them exclaimed.

Grammys could diversify in this year's potential nominations Ryan Reichard • Reporter

While music’s biggest night is still months away, the nominations for the 2019 Grammy Awards will be announced tomorrow. In the major categories, there is sure to be some diversity and some surprise nominations now that the four main categories (Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Best New Artists) have expanded to eight nominations apiece. The expanded categories could make more room for both critically and commercially successful albums. While they have yet to announce their nominations, I decided to try my hand at predicting potential nominees for this years’ four major categories.

Keep in mind these are my predictions and not the definitive list from the Grammys.

For Album of the Year there are a few surefire nominations such as “Scorpion” by Drake, “Everything Is Love” by The Carters and “Reputation” by Taylor Swift. These artists have been Grammy favorites in the past (as well as major category favorites), so it would not be surprising to see on the list. However, for the rest of the nominations in this category, there are a few possible contenders.

One of them could be “Camila” by Camila Cabello. Cabello’s debut effort was released with acclaim and launched the hits “Havana” and “Never Be The Same,” which lands it a potential spot.

Breakout star of the year Cardi B could also be on the list with her debut effort “Invasion of Privacy,” which was also released to acclaim and produced several hits such as “I Like It,” “Bodak Yellow,” “Be Careful” and “Ring.” Pop superstar Ariana Grande could continue her victory lap in 2018 by receiving a nomination for her album “Sweetener.”

The twists come in the last two slots. In one of the remaining spaces Janelle Monae could receive a nomination for her album “Dirty Computer.” “Dirty Computer” remains as one of the most acclaimed albums of all time; however, if the Grammys are going off of sales (which sometimes they do, as

exemplified by Bruno Mars winning last years), she sadly will not be making an appearance. Another potential candidate could be Kacey Musgraves and her album “Golden Hour.” An album that deserves a nomination in this category, “Golden Hour” was acclaimed universally by critics, but could lose out on the nomination if the voters choose based on quantity of sales units over quality of work.

For Record of the Year, Drake will surely receive a nomination, mostly likely for his hit “God’s Plan.”

Childish Gambino could be a potential nominee in this category with “This Is America,” which explored themes of violence in our country. Taylor Swift could see a nomination with her slow burn of a hit, “Delicate.” The song ruled the radio and could be a favorite for voters. From the “Black Panther” soundtrack, a possible nominee could be Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All The Stars.”

Camila Cabello could be set to dominate this category with her chart topper “Havana.” Cardi B is sure to find success with her summer smash hit “I Like It” in this category. Ariana Grande will most likely appear in this category as well with her lead-off single from “Sweetener” “No Tears Left To Cry.” Finally, Grammy favorites (and husband and wife duo) Beyoncé and Jay-Z could be nominated for their song “Apes**t” For Song of the Year, many of the previous contenders will most likely see nominations.

Taylor Swift could receive a nomination for “Delicate.” Drake will most likely see nominations for either “God’s Plan” or “In My Feelings.” Camila Cabello could see a nomination for her Latininspired “Havana.” Ariana Grande will most likely join the hit-packed group with “No Tears Left To Cry.” A surprise nominee could come from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper with their country tinged ballad “Shallow.” This could be a welcoming surprise for music fans (myself included) and critics. Country duo Dan + Shay could see a nomination for their country crossover hit “Tequila.” Bruno Mars

will most likely make a return to the Grammys with his hit “Finesse,” which features rapper Cardi B. Filling in the last spot could be another Grammy favorite, Ed Sheeran, with his song “Perfect.”

Finally, for Best New Artists, there will be some predictable nominees such as Post Malone and Ella Mai. Another possible nominee could be budding pop sensation Dua Lipa who has forged a career for herself in the past year. Michigan natives Greta Van Fleet could see a potential nomination.

Country newcomer Ashley McBryde will be a welcome nomination. Sixteen-year-old Billie Eilish could grab herself a nomination in this coveted category due to her introspective songs.

Breakout star Bebe Rexha has the potential to get a nomination thanks to the huge commercial success of her song “Meant To Be,” which featured the country duo Florida Georgia Line. The final slot could be a toss-up between two of R&B’s most acclaimed newcomers Daniel Caesar and H.E.R. As for the rest of the categories we will have to see Dec. 5 who is competing for the coveted trophies. This year we could see a lot of surprises and shake ups which could keep audiences tuned in and on their toes.

Until then, it is Piper Wood • Illustrator anyone’s guess.

New Grinch movie doesn't compare to classic Maddison Godi • Reporter

This holiday season, Illumination Entertainment remade “The Grinch.”

After seeing the film, it was obvious that movie makers should leave the classics alone and focus on being original.

The first mistake was changing the storyline behind Cindy Lou Who by making her a fan of Christmas instead of her expected yuletide doubts. The story’s plot revolved around Cindy Lou’s wish to help her single, hardworking mother. Cindy’s wish to Santa melted the audience's hearts, but it falls far from the original Dr. Seuss plot.

Character changes continued with the Grinch’s personality being not what was anticipated. His ability to say sorry to Max and feel remorse as he takes from

neighbors does not show the true evil that made the original Grinch’s change of heart so endearing. This version of the classic story makes the Grinch soft, unable to tap into his full Grinch-y potential.

Another disappointment in the film was the vast amount of redirections from the main plot. The Grinch makes an awfully big deal about the Whos’ “three-times-bigger” Christmas tree by attempting to launch a enormous snowball to knock it down. Yet, when he goes to rob Whoville of all their presents, trees and lights he forgets the biggest target of all — the tree. This plot hole shows that this subplot was created simply to fill screen time.

An additional aspect of the film that shows the writers’ lack of imagination is

the movie’s soundtrack. Throughout the film, the classic soundtrack is replaced with upbeat rap music to draw in the new generation. Listening to the updated version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” it sounded very familiar to any song from Illumination Entertainment’s “Despicable Me” soundtrack. This shows their inability to draw outside the lines.

Last, but not least, the use of irrelevant characters showed the entertainment industry’s focus on merchandise. The use of a yak for a reindeer was cute, but it was an unneeded diversion from the plot. This Christmas, though, children everywhere can now ask for their favorite plush “not” reindeer from Santa! How exciting.

Instead of this half-hearted attempt at a holiday film, creative minds could

have easily created a new character to work with. Despite this, they piggyback off of past fan favorites. The Grinch is a story as old as time, and it is risky when movie producers attempt to mess with a classic. Additionally, new generations deserve their own holiday characters to love and cherish for years to come. There is no need for producers to keep reusing a brand name.

Wrapping it up this holiday season, “The Grinch” did not leave me asking for more. I would have been happier watching a fresh, new holiday plot instead of hearing something I’ve already read and watched before. All I ask for next Christmas is some new characters and stories instead of repeated classics.

The Delta College Planetarium recently began a seasonal show for this holiday season entitled “Let It Snow.” The show itself is said to be filled with wonder and the holiday spirit bringing the wonder of the holidays indoors and away from the cold. However, is “Let It Snow” going to light up your holiday or does the show burn out?

Well, there is certainly more to enjoy about this hour-long show of festivities than there is to dislike. For starters, since updating their equipment, the planetarium has been able to bring more realistic animations to the screen.

This allows for a more pleasant viewing experience, especially during the holiday show.

A prime example of this is in the opening song “Let It Snow.” The song features an animated Santa and backup singers standing on a stage singing the Christmas classic. Throughout the show, you are taken on a ride up a Christmas tree, stopping at various ornaments and decorations that ordain the tree. The animation enhances the experience and allows the audience member to be placed inside the journey as the celebration continues. As we get older, we tend to lose our childlike sense of wonder; however, with the addition of animation to the show it allows the audience member to maintain that.

In conjunction with animation, the show features several light displays mixed in as well. This is particularly enjoyable and allows you to stay invested in the show. The lights add variety, and, all the while, plenty of visual effects are maintained and keep the eye trained onto the screen. While

the lights consist of more flat designs, they are brief enough to avoid boring the audience. The ride across the Great Wall at the end is an enjoyable touch that will have you laughing in some parts.

The songs chosen for “Let It Snow” consist of all of this season’s classic tunes, including: “Let It Snow,” “Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” among various others. Some might have preferred the addition of newer songs, but I enjoy that they stuck to the classics. The classic songs are known by a wider range of people, allowing for a certain level of familiarity that is appreciated and prevents the show from being delegated to a certain age group.

However, there are still some criticisms with the show. A minor one is that the show started late, beginning close to 10 minutes after it was supposed to. Then there was a presentation of the stars for about another 10 minutes. The show could have done without this, because it did not add to what the show was representing. The biggest criticism lies within the sound. The visuals were so enticing, and when the muffled music comes out it can be disappointing. Throughout the show, much of the sound seemed flat when compared against the animation. It did not carry the same weight behind it to fully enjoy this festive experience.

Besides a few minor criticisms “Let It Snow” was a rather enjoyable holiday show. “Let It Snow” features fantastic animations alongside many season classics. “Let It Snow” is perfect for families or anyone else interested in getting into the holiday spirit. It will light up your holiday season.

Rita Ora finds rebirth on “Phoenix” Ryan Reichard • Reporter

Throughout her brief career, Rita Ora has experienced several professional highs and lows. From her huge commercial success across seas on her first album to a tumultuous legal battle with rapper Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, the singer has promised her second album for years now. In the time between albums, Ora has released several singles that have ranged in moderate success in the U.K. However, after separating from Roc Nation, the singer promised her second studio album would be worth the wait. Indeed, it was worth the wait.

The production across most of Ora’s singles and albums has been a huge factor contributing to her commercial success.

“Phoenix” is no different. Across the album there are several EDM (electronic dance music) beats that help make the songs scattered across the album infectious. This is especially prevalent on songs such as the best song on the album “Let You Love Me,” as well as “Summer Love,” “Anywhere” and “Lonely Together” which features the late Avicii. On “Only Want You,” Ora experiments with a more stripped-down sound featuring an acoustic guitar to open the song and to dominate the verses. “Soul Survivor” is another stripped-down ballad. It features a prominent piano in the foreground and forgoes the electronic production.

This allows Ora’s voice to shine in this vulnerable ballad. The acoustic breaks

in the album are a welcome contrast to the heavy dance style production.

Where “Phoenix” shines is with Ora’s ability to take the center stage, especially with her vocals. Over the past six years since her last album, Ora has developed a more versatile voice that allows for more command of the songs she sings. Ora often knows when to play to a subtler delivery (“Only You”), which allows for her vulnerable side to make a welcome appearance.

However, on other songs such as the infectious “Let You Love Me,” Ora tends to stay in her upper register especially for the chorus. Her decision to do this allows for desperation to come out, creating a fantastic vocal performance.

“Phoenix” features a slew of guest appearances, from former One Direction singer Liam Payne to singer-songwriter Julia Michaels. For the most part, Ora is a good enough singer to establish palpable chemistry with her guests. This is especially prevalent on “For You,” which features Payne. The two singers have insane chemistry, and will have you blushing by the end of the song.

However, the chemistry does falter on the awkwardly produced “Keep Talking,” which features Michaels. The two do not have any ounce of vocal interplay or chemistry. You can tell that Ora does try, but Michaels does not have the same vocal prowess as Ora, which can make it difficult in terms of interplay. Being one

of the main producers across “Phoenix,” Ora is smart enough to not let her voice get lost in the swell of synthesizers and the mix of instrumentation.

Instead, she creates the perfect balance between instrumentation and vocals.

Across “Phoenix,” the lyrics define Ora’s current position in life, discussing everything from heartbreak to sexual identity to surviving label troubles and more. On the controversial single “Girls” which features Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX, Ora comes out as bisexual, singing “Her name is Laura, we learned a lot of / how to do it like we do it like we wanna. / We just know. We just know. / I ain't one-sided. I'm open-minded / I'm fifty-fifty and I'm never gonna hide it.”

While the song has been criticized for its stereotypical content, it does provide a basis for honesty across the album, especially because Ora co-wrote the track.

On “Let You Love Me,” Ora describes her faults when it comes to her relationship, singing “And every time it gets too real / and every time I feel like sabotaging / I start running.” The lyrics offer a more personal look into the singer’s faults instead of taking the easy route and blaming the other party.

On the heartbreaking “Only Want You,” Ora sings “I don't want another night / of tryna find / another you, / another rock bottom. / I don't wanna wear another / mini dress / to impress / a potential problem.” The lyrics are

On one of the best tracks, “Velvet Rope,” Ora tells the tale of reminiscing on a past love, singing “Don't you remember me, darling? / When you lay down to sleep, / do you still think of me? / ‘Cause I remember you, darling / Without the sadness in your eyes.” Across the album, the lyrics help define the content and stand as a testament to Ora’s current outlook.

Overall, “Phoenix” is a delightful album chock full of pop bangers mixed with acoustic ballads. Together, the album will take you on an experience, allowing the listener to laugh, cry, smile, dance and to appreciate how far they have come in life. On “Phoenix,” Ora embodies the mythological creature and rises from the ashes, proving her resilience and strength. An easy four out of five for me and a definite recommendation.

Students take part in waterfowl season Maddison Goddi • Reporter

Throughout the years, generations have passed down the technique of hunting. It has been used as a way to spend time with family while learning valuable life lessons. At a young age, kids are taught to respect the environment, animals and gun safety.

Triggering the main event for hunters in Michigan is the waterfowl season. From Sept. 1 through the beginning of December, men and women unite to hunt ducks, geese and other large aquatic game birds. Some ducks common to the Bay area are wood duck, teal, red head, bufflehead, pintail and mallards. Each bird has their own limit provided by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) each season. Hunters who fail to follow these regulations are fined accordingly.

Third year Delta student Anna Linzner shares one of her life lessons learned from hunting.

“I have learned to detach from the world of electronics,” says Linzner. “While hunting,

it is easier to pay attention to conversations with family while watching the movement of nature unfold around you. It is peaceful.”

In today’s world, it is nice to have an excuse to put down technology and bond with family. It is hard to make lasting memories when families are spread throughout the house at separate TVs, smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Chad Wasco, another avid waterfowl hunter, is a new Delta Pioneer from Midland who has been encouraged to hunt from a young age.

“I hunt because of the memories with friends and family,” said Wasco when asked why he continues to hunt today. “Those cannot be bought.”

When asked what his favorite memory was from this season, he chuckled and said, “Throughout the hunt, a crazy amount of geese flew overhead. I left with my limit, but walked away with poison ivy in places I didn’t know about.”

This is the epitome of what it means to be a hunter—someone who is dedicated and willing to endure any circumstances to do what they love.

An additional aspect Anna Linzner shared was how important family is for embedding rules into hunters.

“There is always something you can pass down,” says Linzner.

“Teaching kids how to use a gun correctly, while respecting correct DNR laws, allows for a plentiful hunting season next year.”

Hunting may be referred to as a sport, but it means more to those who partake in this lifelong adventure. Those belonging to the hunting community are taught to always leave the outdoors better than they found it and never be wasteful.

This is regulated by the DNR, as they want to keep the animal population and hunters safe.

While roaming the halls of Delta, waterfowl hunters are few and far between. This is due to the vast amount of

Well, time sure flies when we’re having fun, doesn’t it? Okay, you may or may not call school “fun,” so I guess I should say, time sure flies when we’re busy! The point is, the fall semester is already coming to a close, and you know what that means for your classes: It’s finals time!

Just the very thought could instill panic and anxiety in any student. Even those of us who study regularly and get good grades can still get nervous about having to take a final exam, because it is the ultimate test, where we must prove to our teachers that we have effectively digested the material that they have taught us.

How the finals are handled really depends on the class and the professor, as each professor tends to take his or her own approach. Some teachers don’t even have a final exam at all (for example, all of my classes that I’m taking this semester simply have a final project that take up a big chunk of my course grade). To be extra sure of what’s coming up, check the course schedule and assignment listings on your syllabus.

Here are some steps that you can take to better prepare yourself for those dreaded finals, several of which have helped me in the past.

Take advantage of any study guides available In some cases, your teacher will prepare a study guide for each quiz, giving you a rundown of all the topics, key terms, chapters and so forth that will be in an upcoming test. If your class has a study guide available for the final exam, make use of it! Study up on the topics and key terms, read through important parts of the key chapters and make sure you warm up on the most difficult parts.

Ask questions The precious few class periods that are left before the finals are the time to ask any questions you may have to your professor. As many a teacher at Delta has told me, the only stupid question is the one that isn’t asked. Especially if it is related to the upcoming test. Moreover, check your syllabus to see when your professor’s office hours are and you can use that opportunity to get help as well.

Look over your study notes and previous quizzes

Having graded quizzes on hand that you have already taken is particularly helpful in many cases, especially with math classes. Dig out those old quizzes with red markings and look over the questions you got right, as well as the ones you got marked down on.

If you have been taking notes during each lecture (and I hope for your sake that you were), those can help too, especially since your teacher will sometimes present information in class that isn’t available in your textbooks or other printed course material.

Practice when preparing for essay exams If you are, say, taking an English class, and your final exam is a timed writing test, I would strongly recommend taking the time to practice. When I took ENG111 a few years ago, we had a practice essay exam in class, then a final essay exam at the end. I still figured it would be a good idea to open up a word processor and do more practicing on my own. Find an open-ended topic of discussion and formulate a question that you would answer with an essay, and give it a go just like you would under the time pressure and requirements of the real exam. Even if you are a good writer, practice really helps!

Whether you need help writing a paper, brainstorming a topic, understanding textbook material or you need someone to proofread a paper and give feedback, the WRIT center is a valuable asset available for Delta students.

Relax!

You can open up your textbooks and review all that information that you need to know for the last test, but you can’t digest all of that information at once. Take breaks in between. Find a little free time to chill out and do something enjoyable. Go for a walk.

Listen to some relaxing music. Get enough sleep at night. Alleviate your anxiety so that you can come into the finals all rested up and ready to take it on!

Kluck Nursery keeps Christmas real with real trees Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

SAGINAW — The Christmas tree is a staple of American households during the holiday season. Oftentimes, you will come across a tree that is well decorated and looks nice, but is fake and made of plastic.

The practice of using a real tree, however, is not going anywhere.

Kluck Nursery, a family business that has been passed on from generation to generation since the 1920s, has grown and sold real Christmas trees for nearly a century.

Located at 1020 Van Wormer Rd in Saginaw, the nursery operates its own Christmas Tree Farm located just a little further south (all you have to do is follow the signs).

Customers get to choose from thousands of individually priced trees and cut down their own tree.

Tyler Kluck, an employee who is from the fourth generation of the Kluck family, says that the nursery takes up a total of 400 acres, plants an average of 6,000 trees per year and sells 4,500 to 4,800 trees annually.

“We’re definitely the biggest in the Tri Cities for sure,” says Kluck.

“For retail, [...] we’re top one, two or three in the state of Michigan.”

Kluck states that artificial trees are actually more likely to catch on fire.

The National Fire Protection Association states that artificial trees are just as much of a fire hazard (if not more so) as real trees, since issues such as overloaded outlets

and bad wires can easily cause a blaze. Thus, taking necessary fire safety precautions is imperative also when dealing with artificial trees.

Kluck relays that real trees are proven to be more environmentally friendly than artificial ones.

In a Nov. 26 New York Times report, Karen Zraick elaborated that it is a misconception to think that cutting down live Christmas trees is bad for the environment, since it takes up to 10 years for a tree to grow to a typical size (five to six feet), and tree farmers typically plant at least one for every tree that gets cut. In addition, the trees also benefit the environment by helping keep air clean and providing a natural habitat for wildlife.

In further efforts of environmental friendliness, Kluck Nursery provides a tree recycling program for after the Christmas season is over; when people are done with their trees, they can be brought back to the farm, and the trees get chipped into mulch, which is used around the nursery and actually covers the tree farm’s walkways.

Customers who recycle also get a certificate, which can be redeemed at Kluck’s in May for a free white spruce seedling that can be planted.

“A lot of people [...] that have been coming for a lot of years will plant [their spruce trees] in a line, let’s say, in their yard, and they can kind of watch them grow each year, which is kind of neat too,” says Kluck.

“At first, it’s really key to keep it watered,” says Kluck. “If it [...] sits dry for, like, a day, the bottom can seal up, and then it won’t take water up anymore, and then that’s when needles start to fall.”

At the end of the day, Kluck wants to make it clear that getting a real tree is all about getting the authentic experience of going outdoors, picking a tree and cutting it down, as well as spending valuable time with friends and family along the way — an experience that arguably

can’t be found in propping up a green colored piece of plastic every year.

“We want to provide memories for families that [...] can start when they’re young and [be carried] on through their family,” says Kluck. “We’ve had a lot of customers coming back for 30, 40… even some for 50 years.”

Kluck Nursery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers fun for the whole family, with snacks and free wagon rides on the weekends, a straw fort for the kids and free popcorn balls with every tree purchase. Delta students and faculty celebrate deer hunting season Steele Wynne • Collegiate Correspondant

Deer hunting is a culturally embedded activity in Michigan that draws nearly one million hunters out to their blinds and tree-stands every year. Hunting is a way of bringing people together, taking some time off and keeping the white tailed deer from running amok.

Many local hunters have had plentiful seasons this year, while others struggled in their pursuit to fill their tags and stock their freezers.

Alexis Hoover, criminal justice major at Delta College and avid hunter, hasn't harvested any deer this year, although this might be for a good reason. Several hunters, including Hoover, allow most smaller bucks to pass. She prefers to give bucks room and time to develop so they can grow larger before bagging them.

"I have never shot anything under eight points, with the exception of doe," says Hoover.

This is a trend which many hunters follow throughout the state. In addition to this practice are the formally placed antler point restrictions, which the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has set to a minimum of four points in Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties.

“The majority of people I hunt with and friends that are deer hunters have been practicing antler point restrictions (APRs) which, by passing bucks with less than three points on one side will protect over 50 percent of the 1.5-year-old bucks in zone two (which is basically the northern lower peninsula). There is a growing trend statewide of practicing APRs and there is one area of the state where APRs are mandatory,” says Pressler.

This combined effort of hunters all across Michigan has resulted in larger racks and higher point count.

Although bucks have yet to intersect the crosshairs of Pressler’s rifle this year, a prolific four doe have, two of which he reaped on Thanksgiving evening.

There is one couple that did find a buck who failed to duck. Neurotrauma nurse Kim Woodbury, another hunting enthusiast, scored herself an eight point this November, right in the middle of the rut.

Kim and her husband, Ryan Woodbury, say "The rut of deer season is the first couple weeks of November when bucks are more on the move, chasing the estrous doe."

Both Kim and her husband took advantage of this ideal time, known as the rut. However, both

reportedly say that this year has been lighter compared to years prior (in terms of deer turnout) due to crop rotation and the coyote population becoming increasingly prevalent.

Crop rotation impacts the deerhunting season because hunters such as Kim and Ryan do not bait. This is because while baiting does have its upsides for the hunter, it can be harmful to the deer population. Baiting incites a scenario in which deer are extremely close together (moreso than natural), leading to a transfer of germs and illness (which is particularly a

concern with chronic wasting disease).

Instead, a number of hunters, including Kim and Ryan rely heavily on deer congregating, naturally, near crop fields. This leads to a better spread of the deer and reduces the chances of diseases such as chronic wasting disease being spread. Crops such as corn vary in location each year, and the deer along with it. Corn fields are hotspots for deer because they provide great cover as well as sustenance.

Deer season continues until Jan. 1, so be sure to bag a buck or doe while you still have time!

Collegiate face plants the ice Maddison Godi • Reporter

This past week, those of us at the Collegiate laced up our skates and headed to the Civic Arena for our latest “Collegiate Tries It.” Most of us had stunning action shots while others used creative means to avoid catastrophe on the ice.

When entering the Civic Arena, voices filling the hall, letting us know it was going to be a packed evening.

The cost for an hour and a half of skating at the rink was $5 with an extra fee of $3 for those in need of borrowing skates. There were decently priced concessions, including hot chocolate to help warm up from the cold.

Before hitting the ice Friday night, I, personally, had two prior skating experiences.

My first time skating was at an outdoor rink in Detroit when I was fifteen.

It was there I learned my skills in bladed shoes was lacking. I shuffled around the ice without precision or grace. But I have to give it to them — the outdoor

rink was pleasing, providing a festive atmosphere with a large Christmas tree looming over the ice.

The second time skating was at the Civic Area for my sister’s birthday party. I gave up on the idea of skating given my previous encounter with ice, and decided to hug the wall. My plan was going well until a cocky little kid decided to come spray me with ice, causing me to slip and slam my finger into the siding. To this day, my finger does not straighten correctly.

But… third time's a charm. My experience skating with my fellow Collegiate members may have changed my outlook on ice skating.

We all had a blast finding creative ways to skate on the rink without breaking our butts. Holding hands, we clung to one another for dear life, praying no one bumped us to the ground. The rink was packed, but thinned as the hour and a half timed out.

Christmas music played over the sound system, adding that same festive holiday

feeling that enchanted me in the first round of skating.

The best part about the Civic Arena was their assistant sliders that kept even the clumsiest of skaters from colliding with the ice.

Our time on the ice was spent using the sliders in some creative ways. First, we sat on the front of the slider making it look like we were sitting on the handlebar of a bikes.

Then using the sliders as sleds we pushed each other around the rink trying to avoid clashing into fellow skaters.

Our shenanigans were noticed and became a trend for other skaters at the rink.

Soon, parents were pushing around their children in the same fashion while teenagers were seen racing each other.

After surviving all of this, you might just catch us shredding ice again at our local rinks this holiday season. There are many activities to take part in during the winter months and ice skating has found its way to the top of our list.

The NFL continues to produce domestic abusers Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

Over the weekend, a video surfaced of Chiefs’ running back Kareem Hunt pushing over a woman and then kicking her in a hotel.

This video was from an altercation that occurred back in February with the video being part of a police report.

Both the Chiefs’ organization and the NFL stated this is the first time they’d seen the report, but if that’s true, it just means they didn’t investigate this issue nearly as thoroughly as it warranted.

Despite being part of a police report and the evidence used by the prosecution in the case against Hunt, he wasn’t charged with anything.

That alone is surprising in its own right, but the fact that TMZ was able to get this video without NFL or Chiefs’ executives getting a hold of it seems unlikely.

If this was the first time they saw the video, it’s because everyone turned a blind eye to the situation.

Once this video was released, action was taken pretty swiftly.

Hunt was placed on the Commissioner Exempt List (CEL), meaning he wasn’t able to play as he was being investigated, and, soon after, he was released from the Chiefs.

It is important to note that it wasn’t until Hunt was placed on the CEL that he was released from the Chiefs, which makes the statement from his former team less of a statement. Additionally, in the statement for his release, it is worded in a way that the Chiefs aren’t so much mad

that Hunt participated in the incident, but instead that he lied.

At least the Chiefs made the right decision in releasing him, regardless of the reason surrounding it, but this might not mean much for Hunt.

If any precedent has been set, Hunt will likely get his shot with another team in the NFL. Just this week, linebacker Reuben Foster was released from the 49er’s after he was charged with a second domestic abuse. Within the week, he was claimed by the Washington Redskins.

So, it is fair to say that some team will likely look past this video of Hunt. After all, he wasn’t charged with any crime in the end.

If this incident proves only one thing, it’s that the NFL only cares about something as much as the public does. Video evidence is the most incriminating, indisputable proof of an event. As such, it incites the most emotion into the viewers — the same viewers that are anticipating NFL kickoffs on Sunday.

They only care about an incident when the public is up in arms and there is video evidence.

Not just any video evidence though, it has to be video evidence made available to the public.

After all, the NFL didn’t punish Reuben Foster with a suspension or any type of repercussions.

It was instead the 49er’s franchise that had enough moral character to release him, regardless

of how talented he is.

Don’t be deceived into thinking this is a rare event. The biggest in this series of domestic abuses was Ray Rice, as he dragged his unconscious girlfriend out of an elevator, and was caught on tape doing so. Joe Mixon was similarly caught on tape knocking out a girl in a restaurant altercation.

When looking at those with criminal histories in domestic assault/abuse without video evidence, the list is terrifyingly long. Some of the largest names include Greg Hardy, Tyreek Hill, Brandon Marshall, Chad Ochocinco, James Harrison and Joe Mixon.

The list goes on and on; but these players have still been able to make millions as athletes, regardless of the scale of their crimes. Is a courtroom’s ruling not good enough? Does nothing matter without video evidence?

Hopefully this event will cause a long overdue shift in priorities and morality in the NFL. While I understand it’s a business, there shouldn’t be such a high tolerance for criminal activity in the league. The only way to rid the league of this activity is for the NFL’s commissioner to put his foot down and make it illegal for teams to pick a player up off the waivers after an event of this nature. Otherwise, there will always be a team willing to look the other way for a player’s crimes, no matter how bad they may be.

Winning big, getting our hopes up, but then losing the game(s) that really matter.

When is it going to end? Well, obviously not this year. The only thing that came to an end this season was hopes of making the College Football Playoffs.

You gave up 62 points. It’s one thing to lose, but it’s another thing to get absolutely demolished. The city of Ann Arbor has deified you, treated you like a king, and this is how you repay them?

Let's be honest here, it isn't really you that is helping to bring prosperity to Michigan football. You're riding on the shoulders of defensive coordinator Don Brown, who, year after year produces one of the best defenses in all of college football.

Every year, ol’ Donny boy is shipping off NFL prospects, while you are a figurehead for recruiting. How about putting on your big boy khakis, finishing the season strong and making sure we win the bowl game. We don't need to be reminded of last year’s embarrassment when we lost to South Carolina in the Outback Bowl.

But, honestly — frustrations aside — I wasn't expecting to beat Ohio State. I just wanted a good game. I wanted to see a competition. But instead, we were lambs brought to a slaughter in Columbus. Just finish strong so we don't have to listen to speculation about you getting fired for the next couple months.

McMath’s Pioneers continue their win streak Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

With multiple games in the books, the Delta College men’s basketball team has gotten off to a hot start this year. Through six games (though some are exhibitions/scrimmages) they have managed to find their rhythm, while remaining undefeated.

The most impressive part about this team is the amount of playmakers they possess. It seems that each game, they have a different player who is going off for 20 points. In their most recent contest, it happened to be Chaz Woods, going off for 21 points against Northwood JV. Heading into December, although the weather is getting colder, this team is getting hotter, as its players are coming to understand the pace of the game at this level.

Although different players have their impressive games and are hitting their stride, there a few players who have set themselves apart from the rest early in this season.

One of these players is freshman Goliath Mitchell. Mitchell has transitioned almost seamlessly from high school to JuCo, using his

athleticism and quickness to create scoring opportunities, which explains why he’s averaging 23 points per game.

Additionally, Mitchell doesn’t stray away from having the ball in clutch situations, instead he’s the type of player that wants to take the buzzer-beater shot and have it all on his shoulders.

Alongside Mitchell, freshman wing Jackarus Smith has been a dominant presence on the court. Towering at 6-foot-5, and with impressive hops, nobody can hang with him. Smith has averaged 18.3 points per game, and brings a gritty attitude to the court. Mitchell and Smith both came from Grand Blanc high school, giving them a great amount of chemistry on the court and making it easy for their talents to synergize.

Additionally sophomore center Peyton Miller has been able to contribute in more ways than one for the Pioneers. Not only has he averaged 14.6 points per game, he has the highest field goal percentage on the entire team through six games.

This hot start is reminiscent of last year's team, which was able to win the district championship and move on to the national tournament.

With a team motto such being “every

play is crucial,” this team can't get ahead of themselves. It is essential to keep their eyes on the prize, while keeping their minds in the moment.

For coach McMath, this is looking like the same movie with a different cast, and hopefully with the final scene set in Danville Illinois for a national championship.

Delta College women’s basketball team falls short in close games Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

With the Lady Pioneers having played five games, they have performed underwhelmingly against the competition, with their record sitting at 2-3. This isn’t much of a problem for the team, as their win record is only one win away from being at .500; however, this may be indicative of a larger problem for the team early on.

One alarming statistic is that the Lady Pioneers have lost every game that wasn’t played at home so far. Although this is only three games, and there is plenty of basketball left to be played, it could have a deeper meaning.

Additionally, in the three games that this team has lost, they’ve lost by less than six points in each one. Once again, this is only three games, but it may be a cause for concern. Are these players able to perform in the close games? Are they able to close the gaps and finish out a game strong? Or, do they run out of gas early?

Regardless, this team has plenty of time to right the ship, and Head Coach

Shonda Long believes in her players. With multiple freshman players, it is important for her players to adjust and adapt quickly so this Delta team doesn’t have to play catch-up with their conference opponents.

Even though Long and company don’t have the prettiest record thus far, there are plenty of positives for this team to be proud of.

The team has a clear leader on the court in sophomore guard Marisa Morton, who is leading the team with an average 17.2 points per game.

To complement her on the court, she’s assisted by freshmen Kennedi Maurer and Katie Engelhardt, both hailing from Valley Lutheran High School. The pair has averaged 15 and 12.8 points, respectively.

If this team is able to find their identity and find a way for their talent to synergize, they’ll be able to come out of these close games with wins instead of looking back with regret.

The next home game for the Lady Pioneers is Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. against Mid Michigan College.

NFL’s week 14 brings stress to fantasy owners Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

As if finals season wasn’t stressful enough, many college students have another source of stress in these turbulent times — fantasy football playoffs. Hopefully, you’re in a better spot than I am going into week 14. As you can see, the standings are especially tight in this league. With week 13 finishing up soon, I am roughly four points away from a win. The problem is — with Zach Ertz sure to rack up multiple points for my opponent, I can pretty much chalk that up as a loss.

Hopefully, nobody else is in this situation and you’ve all clinched a playoff spot in your league. But… just look at this league. I’m poised for a week 14 battle against No L’s. If I win, I’m in.

If you’re in a similar situation, you’re not alone. Here are some ways you can get through the emotional ride.

Let out a good yell (or cry)

Listen — some people might not understand the mental and emotional toll a bad year in fantasy can have on a person. I do — and I’m here for you. It’s okay to blow off a little steam by trashing David Johnson or Le’Veon Bell on Twitter for ruining your fantasy season.

Get homework/studying done ahead of time The best way to make sure that everything doesn’t become overwhelming is to get ahead in your classes so you can dedicate your Sunday to football. This is honestly a solid plan for any week.

After all, who can multitask while a good game is going on?

Invite the people in your league over to watch the games Assuming you get into the playoffs this week, what sweeter satisfaction is there than gloating in the face of your opponent whose bench just went off for 40 points?

Pull out all the stops for snacks This week of fantasy is the biggest deal in the league, aside from the championship.

Definitely a bigger deal than Michigan slapping Florida in a bowl game for what feels like the millionth time in a row, and easily bigger than MSU’s Redbox Bowl.

Chow down and celebrate your victory, or wallow in defeat, on a full stomach.

Either way, it’s much better.

Remember, it’s all luck. No skill.

If you happen to lose, just remember to inform the person that beat you that there is no luck involved in fantasy football. It’s basically random chance. Unless you happen to win; in that case, it was 100 percent skill.

How to tell your child that Santa isn’t real Kelly Winters • Multimedia Reporter

Winter is upon us. ‘Tis the season to start readying your wish lists for everyone’s favorite holiday — Christmas. But for all of the people out there that are parents to small children: good luck! Be ready to bite the bullet and give all the credit of perfectly planned holiday gifts to that fictitious being, Santa. As soon as the temperature drops, parents everywhere are forced to decide whether their kids are old enough to know the truth, and if those children should start taking the first, bleak steps toward maturity.

No matter the age, expect them to experience all of the respectable stages of grief as they mourn the loss of a childhood icon. These stages include but are not limited to; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally (if you’re lucky), acceptance.

A key factor to deciding whether the child in question is ready to know the traumatic truth about the holiday season or not is determining if they’re

old enough to comprehend the fact of the matter. No child should go beyond the cusp of middle school with this false belief in their hearts. Any and all seasonal misconceptions should be stopped far before this time.

Prime time to ease into the topic at hand would ideally be between 2nd and 4th grade. At this point, if the gloomy gossip hasn’t already breached their years by a fellow classmate, it is time for them to hear it straight up.

Once it is determined that the child in question is indeed ready to be hit with the devastating discussion, the bearer of bad news must be determined. Most likely, it is best to come from either a parent, older sibling or close loved one. This task will not be easy, but whomever is chosen must be capable of the utmost compassion.

After you, a parent, older sibling or trusted loved one have decided that the deed of crushing a child’s dream is their burden, time and planning are the most important variables. The best time to drop this bomb is at the brink

of the winter season, when Christmas is on the brain but still somewhat of a glimmer of joy, far into the future.

Doing it at this time will ensure that all of the damage will be healed by the time that parents even begin to start wrapping their children’s gifts. Yes, the sting of a lost childhood icon will haunt the unsuspecting child for several days (or even weeks); however, their bitter hearts will be healed once they see their bountiful haul waiting for them under their tree — this time, from their parents.

Green Christmases are a sno-go!

— Our View — During the cold winter months, those living in northern states patiently await the first snow.

In past years, it has been soul crushing when children wake up on Christmas morning to see the colors green and brown. We at the Collegiate believe Michigan is better with a white Christmas.

Seeing the ground covered in snow helps set the mood for the holiday months. It’s hard to get into the spirit of giving when the outdoors doesn’t look like a snowglobe. With the shopping season starting earlier each year, we need to see a dust of snow instead of naked tree branches as a reminder to check off our Christmas lists.

How are outdoor Christmas decorations supposed to look festive without a blanket of white?

They don’t. All those blown-up snowmen and Santas look misplaced surrounded by green grass and patches of dirt. We enjoy taking the time to drive around and see

the light spectaculars throughout Bay City, Saginaw, Midland and Frankenmuth.

Without snow, these displays become dull and less eye catching.

Holiday music and movies become irrelevant when there is an absence of snow. Each song sings of falling snow, and classics like “Frosty the Snowman” are a reminder of all the fun that could have been with a little precipitation.

Accentuating all of these leisure activities is the fact we finally get a break from school.

From Dec. 15 to Jan. 6 college student receive welldeserved respite, and time to be with family and friends. These three weeks off allow us to kick back and relax with a warm beverage in hand as

we push off the idea of returning to stressful class schedules.

With this snow comes an abundance of outdoor activities.

During the winter break, you can catch us ice skating, pelting others with snowballs, sledding and making snowmen. Having a green Christmas defeats the purpose of winter, since all of these activities would not exist.

Those against playing in the snow can still appreciate a white Christmas from the comfort of home. Baking cookies, wrapping gifts and making hot cocoa is best while watching snowflakes descend outside through a window.

Enjoy being a Michigander this holiday season by taking part in some snow-filled activities.

Coffee has always bean better than tea

Spilling the tea on why tea is better than coffee

Ah… coffee. The fuel of mankind. Also known as java, nature’s brew and go juice, there’s a reason why we have so many names for this beverage.

It is because coffee is woven into the fabric of society. It is inescapable and has a shop on every corner in most major cities across the globe. However, there is an intruder threatening to take some of the land coffee has rightfully claimed. That intruder would be tea. While tea is gaining popularity, coffee is obviously still the superior drink.

Tea is simply hot water with leaves infused into it. Sounds gross, right? When I sit down to have a hot beverage (or cold one) I don’t want to drink warm plant water. That’s disgusting!

Coffee comes from beans that are ground up and (while both come from plants) coffee has a flavor to it. Tea tastes like you are drinking warm water and nothing else. Part of drinking something is to have a taste and tea clearly does not have any taste to it.

Coffee is more versatile than tea is. Coffee comes in a variety of types and flavors. But here is where coffee really tops tea. In terms of uniqueness, you can make art out of coffee. Baristas in several spots are taught to make different designs and patterns into the tasty beverage.

Not only does it appeal to your taste buds but also your eyes.

Those of you who are into showing off on the ‘Gram know that coffee is perfect for photo ops. It is simply more stylish than dirty leaf water is. The cups from most major companies are sleek and fashionable. In addition, your coffee with art infused into it is perfect for social media. The designs offer treats for your eyes and desire in the eyes of your followers.

Picture this: it's a snowy winter day, classes have been canceled and the only thing on your agenda is to cook yourself with your heating blanket while watching reruns of The Office. You reach other to grab your mug, filled to the brim of your favorite herbal tea. What could be more relaxing than this? Certainly not the unwanted presence off over-caffeinated bean water, which some of us know as coffee.

Coffee has been taking the world by storm. A storm that is comparable to a Category 5 hurricane demolishing everything in its path. The popularization of coffee in today's society is the brink of the end of humanity as we know it. Coffee culture does one thing and one thing only: it promotes addiction to a drug none other than caffeine.

But there is a silver lining, there is still hope for humanity.

Going for coffee with other adults is a milestone in many people’s lives. It is a rite of passage from childhood to sleep-deprived adult. However, coffee is a way for people to socialize and to establish connections. People often chat over coffee and get to know each other better. People get invited to coffee and not tea.

This is not England — this is America, we drink coffee here.

The aroma of coffee is one that will put you into another dimension. Coffee has such a pleasant scent that it has inspired several fragrances and candles.

You can go to any candle store and find a coffee scented candle because the scent is desired by many.

You won’t be able to find a tea scented candle anywhere.

Who would want one anyway?

It would simply smell like boiling water. If I wanted that I would go boil some water myself and have the scent fill my house.

America — it is time we take a lesson from the past.

Tea only belongs one place and that’s in the harbor. Coffee has always bean better than tea and it always will be.

There is a drink that can save us from crippling caffeine addictions. A drink that we all know and love — tea.

For those that have no type: tea is just the drink for you. Yes, coffee is known to be served in different variants (that all taste the same). But where can you go wrong with such a wide assortment including: green, herbal, black, oolong, white and yellow. Seriously — where can you go wrong?

Some people may argue that tea isn't anything more than some dried up leaves soaked in water.

Yes, this may be true.

However, it's all natural and a simple delicacy.

Your average tea drinker can usually be found enjoying a nice cup of undiluted tea. Meanwhile, your typical coffee drinker adds copious amounts of creamer and sugar to their bean-infused caffeine water. With this being said, tea is by far the

superior to coffee, since it can be enjoyed by the majority of the general public in its natural state.

When is the last time you saw someone order a tea with extra additives and artificial flavorings?

Can't say I recall ever seeing this. However, most of us could fill a memoir with the amount of flavor combinations pushed on to us by comercial coffee shops to make their beanbased beverages more palatable. Some people say that this makes coffee more “versatile”. Pshhhhh.

More like, “Unflavorful and unliked on its own”.

When it comes to flexing your favorite drinks on your Instagram, tea is truly the way to go.

What's better? Showing off a freshly homebrewed tea that was made in the comfort of your own home or a plastic cup featuring a double-tailed mermaid containing any sort of coffee flavoring that a stranger threw together for you. Please. Spare me agony and potential headache after my eyeballs do a double backflip in my head and keep your commercial brew off of my timeline. Just looking at these pictures fill my nostrils with the smell of corporate greed.

Enough is enough.

We need to band together as a society and take matters into our own hands.

We need to end this phenomenon surrounding coffee and turn to the healthier alternative; tea.
