Winter skin survival guide: Save your skin VICTORIA PEREZ Baby, it’s cold outside! There are plenty of reasons to love winter – cozy sweaters, snow angels, sledding, hot chocolate, glistening snow – but there’s also a downside: dry skin. Don’t let your skin suffer. For many people, winter’s harsh climate puts a heavy burden on skin.

The reduced moisture in the air is the primary cause of irritated and cracked skin. Extremely dry skin can quickly go from bad to worse if left untreated.

So, treat yourself to some good skin care. To keep your skin glowing and soft this season, try these tips.

Find a heavier moisturizer for winter. Since the skin on your face is more sensitive, use an oil-based moisturizer rather than a water-based moisturizer so that the oil forms a protective layer on the skin and retains moisture on your face. This will prevent the itchy, scaly, flaky skin that emerges from the cold. Make sure to use it in the morning and before you go to bed at night.

You will also find great delight in a do-it-yourself mask at home. Gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate aren’t the only thing in your kitchen this season! You’ll find the best product right in your very home. Homemade hydrating masks can provide needed moisture in the colder months. Use natural ingredients such as honey, aloe vera, yogurt, olive oil, castor oil, bananas, avocado or lemon. Mix what you like together to create a cream and leave on skin for 10-15 minutes for lasting hydration. Be sure to follow @_deltalifestyle for a great mask.

Bonus Round: Hydrate from the inside out! The easiest way to keep your skin healthier is the cheapest. Drinking water helps your skin stay young and wrinkle-free. Don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water every day during the bright, beautiful and snowy season.

Brian Pruitt motivates Men of Delta

JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – Motivational speaker Brian Pruitt made an appearance on Delta’s campus as the final speaker of the semester for Men of Delta’s Motivational Mondays on Nov. 13.

Pruitt brought his empowering energy and enlightening stories to attendees to show them that they can overcome any obstacles in their way.

Pruitt is a Saginaw native and graduated from Arthur Hill High School.

He has been a traveling motivational speaker for the past 20 years and tries to instill valuable life lessons in everyone to whom he speaks.

“The truth is, the most important things I can share with you are the things that when you can walk out of the door, you can actually apply to your life,” says Pruitt.

After sharing a story about three people facing Mount Kilimanjaro – one person rejoicing on the ground, one who stopped halfway up and the other who climbed to the top – Pruitt compared these climbers to the students in attendance.

“You are all facing your own mountain, and it’s the mountain of education. It’s not enough to show up and say one day you want to go to college. It’s not enough to talk about it and have people applaud you. It still won’t be enough to get here, and once it gets tough, stop in the middle of climbing this mountain of education.

Once you start, you’ve got to finish,” says Pruitt.

Pruitt continued with encouraging students to learn how to overcome the obstacles they face in order to get where they want to be.

“Some of you come from some tough situations, and sometimes it’s more than just intelligence that stops you from making it through this terrain called college. It could be where you come from or where you go back to once you leave this place or even how you think about yourself. But, you can overcome all of that when you adopt the right attitude,” says Pruitt.

Carlos McMath, Student Leadership and Diversity coordinator, is currently in charge of the Men of Delta club. Thirtyfour Delta students are actively involved in the mentor program whose goal is to provide students with whatever help is necessary to succeed.

“Mu Omega Delta is a group of young men on campus, and we focus on making sure that each one of us – our brotherhood – thrives onto the next semester. There are more situations that

limit us as students that have nothing to do with academics. Sometimes it’s your lifestyle or you’re around people who keep bringing you down. We just want to be a group of peers that can bring everyone up,” says McMath.

The idea of Motivational Mondays came from the club’s mentors who wanted to bring in examples of successful men to share their journeys with Delta students.

“We want to give them a strong message coming from someone besides ourselves,” says McMath.

‘Chez les Napoléons’ brings French culture, language to Tri-Cities KELLEN MacGREGOR “Chez les Napoléons,” the Delta College French Club’s official moniker, means “house of the Napoleons,” which perfectly summarizes the French Club’s recent endeavors in and outs of Delta.

Founded seven years ago, “Chez les Napoléons” has adhered to its values through its soirées, philanthropy and education of the French language and culture. Such values include the preservation, spreading and appreciation of the Francophonie, which collectively live up to its Napoleonic title.

Current board members of the French Club include: – President: Alyssa Shaughnessy – Vice President: Abbey Kuhns – CAB Representative: Taylor Simpson Typical club meetings, which occur every last Wednesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m., require no prior French experience and are open to the public.

music appreciation and book readings are often the center of meetings, with pupils from all proficiency levels assisting the novice French learners.

The French Club’s adviser, adjunct instructor Ann De Corte, has been teaching for 28 years. Originally from

Waregem, Belgium, De Corte began to teach French at middle and high schools in Ghent and Brussels, then at Delta College and Saginaw Valley State University, where she presently teaches.

“My vision is to passionately enrich my students in the French language

and culture by leveraging my European heritage,” shared De Corte. “Coming from Belgium, where multilingualism is the norm, I felt a great need to stimulate my American students in using their knowledge and power of a second language.”

“Chez les Napoléons” has partaken in several outings in the past under Ann De Corte’s advising. In May of 2015 De Corte organized a trip to Montreal with Delta’s French Club and SVSU’s Alpha Mu Gamma chapter. Recently, De Corte has taken students to the Detroit Institute of Arts to explore francophone art firsthand, which has proven itself entertaining and educational each time.

For the club’s community service projects, bake sales, donations to local homeless shelters and French education sessions have allowed club members to give back to the community by using their French skills beyond the classroom.

Local artists hold discussion at Studio 23 on being an artist JACK RECHSTEINER

BAY CITY – The Great Lakes Bay Region has a legacy of art and a rich history of artists that includes names we hear in art history books, like Alden B. Dow, Irving Couse and Jim Shaw.

The 50 Artists of the Great Lakes Bay Region exhibition hosted at Studio 23 in Bay City was formed with the intention of celebrating the artists currently working in the Mid-Michigan area and giving them a platform to spotlight their artwork.

Any artist living and working in the area was eligible to apply.

“I saw the opportunity – the culmination – of broadcasting the art and culture of this region. The idea was to get the top artists in the area and create this exhibition that showcases the caliber of artists we have,” says Avram Golden, an artist featured in the exhibition as well as being an instrumental figure in starting the 50 Artists of the Great Lakes Bay Region project.

Ninety-one artists entered to be considered for the exhibition, and the jury had the difficult task of selecting only 50 of them. Eleven of the 50 artists were scheduled to speak on a panel hosted at Studio 23 on Nov. 11. The panel was comprised of Larry Butcher, Sara Clark, Avram Golden, Pamela Hart, Emmy Heger, Rosemary Kavanagh, Debra LaRocque, Jim Matherne, Mark Piotrowski and Roger Reichmann.

“You’re seeing a lot of types of art that you don’t really see in this area in one place,” says Allen.

The idea for the 50 Artists of the Great Lakes Bay Region started two year ago as a way to bring

attention to the talent and artists in Mid-Michigan.

The juried exhibition showcases visual artists from the eight counties that make up the Great Lakes Bay Region.

“We’ve been very happy with the response to the exhibition and the events. Both of the speaker panels have had full rooms of people for them and the opening night of the exhibition had over 300 people coming out in support of it,” says Valerie Allen, Studio 23 curator.

Allen began the panel by giving an introduction to the exhibit and explaining the question-andanswer format of the event. The questions posed to the artists chased after each artist’s definition of creativity, how they came to think of themselves as artists and also asking them to describe their creative process.

“When I got the question, I thought to myself, ‘When was I not an artist?’ Being an artist has really been my identity all along,” says Butcher, exhibition artist and Delta College emeritus.

This support has made it possible for the 50 Artists of the Great Lakes Bay Region to become a bi-annual event, with the next one planned for 2019. Still left as part of this year’s exhibition is the closing reception for the exhibition on Nov. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. Before the reception, there will be a group of 11 exhibition artists performing demonstrations on how they create their work from 3 to 5 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. Wow. I am really struggling trying to the find the exact words I need in order to describe this phenomenon of a film, and quite frankly “wow” is the only word that truly sums it all up. Marvel has outdone itself with its latest film release. From the astonishing special effects to the epic battle scenes, there is no wonder that the movie was rated a whopping 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The plot seemed fairly straightforward in the beginning but took a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Thor finds himself imprisoned on the opposite side of the universe and Illustration by Tylla Hahn needs to return to Asgard in order to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of Asgard and to defeat the newer, or perhaps older, villain Hela. We learn throughout the movie the true origin of Odin’s rise to power, and Thor struggles to find his own power without the aid of Mjolnir (can you hear the violins of sadness playing too?)

Compared to the previous “Thor” movies, which had darker plots, the new film was an unexpected burst of color and humor that I never really associated with “Thor.” Thor and Loki find themselves on the planet of Sakaar, which is completely comprised of scraps from other universes. There, Thor is forced to fight the champion of the Red King, which just so happens to be a new and improved Hulk. The biggest difference? He can talk. Please tell me I wasn’t the only person who was surprised by this, because I found this a major event.

The best part of the film, hands down, was Thor’s new look, because… Hot damn! Thor was already one of the better-looking superheroes, but I must attribute that to Chris Hemsworth if I am being completely honest. I always appreciated his long blond hair, but I have to say that his new haircut, courtesy of the one and only Stan Lee, gave a new life to Thor that was only the beginning of the changes to their universe.

To top off what would already be a great movie, the guest appearances were the major highlights of the film. We were able to see Doctor Strange on the big screen once again along with his majestic Cloak of Levitation and, of course, his killer goatee. And while Loki is not exactly a guest appearance role, Tom Hiddleston brought a zesty flair to his character, which makes him my all-time favorite Marvel villain.

I already know that my words will never truly capture how amazing a movie this third installment turned out to be. If you have not already figured this out, I would truly recommend this movie to every person who has a heartbeat. Grab some buttery popcorn, a nice cold drink and sit back to enjoy a film that has a little bit of everything for everyone.

Film takes over town for 11th annual festival AS SEEN AROUND CAMPUS KELLEN MacGREGOR & JACK RECHSTEINER The Riverside Saginaw Film Festival took the city of Saginaw by storm for its 11th year in a row from November 9 to 12.

Spanning five different venues scattered throughout downtown and Old Town Saginaw, the Riverside Saginaw Film Festival brought four days’ worth of independent, foreign, classic and documentary films to the area. The screening locations for the 2017 year were the Saginaw Club, Pit and Balcony Community Theatre, Hoyt Library, First Congregational Church and the Castle Museum.

Established in 2007 as a grassroots movement, the Riverside Saginaw Film Festival is an effort to bring different, unconventional and contemporary movies to the Saginaw area. That doesn’t mean just obscure films, but notable ones that are deserving to be screened as well. The 2017 Riverside Saginaw Film Festival saw movies featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Nicholas Hoult, Anne Hathaway and Kristen Stewart, among others. The films screened this year also boast accolades of winning awards from other festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Austin Fantastic Festival.

“We spend nearly a year researching and selecting our films. The majority have won others at other film festivals or created Oscar buzz, but are not likely to play in our commercial theaters,” says Irene Hensinger, chairperson of the Riverside Saginaw Film Festival Committee.

One such film, “The Square,” was presented at

the Hoyt Library. This Palme d’Or-winning film

by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund satirizes the modern art world and its myriad, orotund quirks.

From a performance art piece involving an ape-like man harassing dinnergoers to an advertisement for the museum featuring the literal explosion of a blond beggar child, “The Square” shows how selfobsessed, and sometimes even preposterous, the art world is. Funny, provocative and philosophical, this Östlund mockumentary-style movie is bound to make you laugh, think and perhaps shed a tear (from laughing at the ridiculous pseudo-problems certain curators deal with on a daily basis).

The Riverside Saginaw Film Festival aims to be an economic boost for the center of Saginaw, providing support to local establishments and other non-profit groups while also being a platform for emerging filmmakers. In 2014 the Riverside Saginaw Film Festival was recognized by the Saginaw Arts and Enrichment Commission for their contribution to the city and was given the All Area Arts Award.

“The festival has developed a loyal following throughout its years for showing great films and hosting interesting speakers and associated activities. Festival attendees reflect all ages and come from throughout the Great Lakes Bay area,” says Hensinger.

Chicago poet hosts intimate workshop with Delta students JACK RECHSTEINER

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Kristiana Rae Colón woke up Monday, Nov. 5, and drove from Chicago and back to hold a poetry workshop with Delta students.

Colón is an acclaimed poet, playwright, activist, actor and the co-director of the #LetUsBreathe Collective. She is also involved with the Young Chicago Authors, which, English professor JodiAnn Stevenson explains, is part of how Colón came to Delta College to host this event.

Stevenson has been working to establish a relationship with Young Chicago Authors, an organization that offers workshops to high school and college students and also holds the largest youth poetry contest in the world, Louder Than A Bomb.

“Embedded in the very core of Young Chicago Authors and their programs is that we can use

poetry as a tool of social justice to be louder than a bomb,” says Stevenson.

Stevenson received a grant to support events centered around the idea of survivorship. From there she got in touch with the Young Chicago Authors who referred Colón as the “perfect poet for a workshop of that nature.”

“Events like these are extraordinarily rare. They happen in the area maybe twice a year,” says Stevenson.

After a short introduction by Stevenson, Colón took the floor by launching into one of her spoken word pieces. After getting everyone’s attention by showing her mastery of the spoken word craft, she asked attendees if they would be fine with taking some time to hear about her work, followed by some group writing exercises and then ending the event with Colón performing

more of her poems. Unanimous approval and nods abounded throughout the room.

Colón proceeded to talk about the bulk of her artistic

work, starting by saying that she has “always been a writer since [she] could write.” Colón goes on to say that after the killing of Trayvon Martin, she felt the need to become more active and vocal with her creative pursuits. Colón went on to write the play “Lack on Lack,” a lyrical and poetic exploration of intersectional oppression and the perpetuation of scarcity.

“If scarcity is engineered, that means abundance is the natural order. If we step away from capitalist beliefs, we see the overwhelming generosity in people’s hearts,” says Colón.

After this play, Colón started a GoFundMe with the hashtag #LetUsBreathe to raise money to buy gas masks for Ferguson protestors. This became a pivotal moment for Colón and other Chicago artists to connect with the voices of people across the nation and share their

experiences. Colón saw this as a way to use art and initiative to create a place of community and political engagement.

“That was the next step to using art and poetry to galvanize people into taking social action,” says Colón.

After detailing the different creative and activist works she has been involved with, Colón led everyone in a group writing project with the point of illustrating the power of collective imagination. At the end, everyone took turns reading aloud the different poems they had created together. To finish the workshop, Colón performed more of her spoken word pieces and left the budding poets with one final word of advice.

“I believe artists are the vanguard of the revolution. I take that upon myself as my personal charge and hope that all of you take it up too,” says Colón.

FOIA reveals more information on false rape case

Nine months ago, a former Delta College student claimed that she was sexually assaulted by an unknown black male in the northwest parking lot of Delta’s main campus.

The report led campus officials to alert other Delta students via text message, warning them about a rapist at large. A grassroots campaign erupted on campus with Postit notes that stated “I believe her.” Two Delta students were questioned about the accusation, including a parolee who happened to be in the parking lot during the alleged incident.

The rape, police now say, never happened. Mary Zolkowski, the once-alleged victim, now faces a felony charge.

The lengthy police report made of the incident, obtained by the Collegiate through a Freedom of Information Act request, brought to light particulars and consequences of the false rape reported, including details that it may have been financially motivated.

Zolkowski is currently charged in Bay County District Court with one count of false report of a felony, punishable by up to four years of incarceration and a $2,000 fine.

District Justice Mark Janer is

currently waiting to review files sent from a psychiatric facility who administered Zolkowski an examination. The results of the examination will determine if she is fit to stand trial.

The Collegiate has reached out to Zolkowski and her lawyer James F. Piazza.

“The case is still pending and I have no comment,” said Piazza.

“I kind of blacked out” FEB. 22 – Mary Zolkowski’s mother called to report her daughter’s rape to a Delta College Public Safety officer. Her mother was concerned due to the fact that Mary was unwilling to talk to police officers about the incident or get a physical exam, records show.

Later, when officers were able to contact Zolkowski, she told officials that she had been raped by an unknown black male.

She alleged that the rape occurred after returning from the parking lot from walking her friend to class. She mentioned that she had dropped her classes previously, but had returned to give her friend a ride to school, records show.

When asked where the rape occurred on campus,

Zolkowski could not recall where she had parked. She stated that she usually parked in J wing, but could not confirm where she parked that day. She continuously stated that she had parked “out back,” records show.

Zolkowski alleged that she was fumbling with her keys when was grabbed from behind, records show. She also stated that it was a black male, claiming that all she saw were his hands and that she did not get a good look at him.

When asked about any information on what the man could have said or done during the time of assault, Zolkowski claimed she “kind of blacked out.”

When asked about having a physical examination done by officers, Zolkowski refused.

She also requested that no one contact the friend she took to school and no one come to her home.

FEB. 23 – Zolkowski met with Chief Robert Battinkoff and Title IX coordinator Loyce Brown. Title IX is a federal law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program.

Before the meeting, Zolkowski mentioned to Battinkoff that she had dropped her Delta classes due to her overhearing individuals in the hall making victim-blaming statements, records show. Zolkowski stated that she “just couldn’t be at Delta anymore.”

During her interview with the Title IX coordinator, Zolkowski clarified that the assault had occurred in the northwest parking lot at Delta College.

Zolkowski added that she let her friend whom she had taken to class know about the assault.

He replied that it would be best if they not talk anymore. He stated that he did not want to “deal with that,” records show. Again, Zolkowski insisted that officials not speak to her friend, stating that “he’s not going to say he knows me.”

When describing the alleged

assault to Brown, she described the male pushing her into the front seat of her vehicle, records show. She alleged that her head was between the seat and the dashboard. She also described her arms being pinned under her body and against the doorframe.

She stated that the suspect was wearing a condom, later stating that it was lubricated, records show.

Zolkowski stated that she “blacked out” during the assault, and described it as being a very brief duration. Zolkowski used the term “hit it and quit it,” records show.

Zolkowski described her injuries from the assault, stating that he had bruising to her breasts and that she felt her neck and back were injured, records show. She seemed surprised that

her neck was not bruised from having been strangled.

After the interview, Zolkowski stated that she did not wish to be involved in a law enforcement investigation and did not wish to have an invasive examination.

Battinkoff was later contacted by an officer, who had been contacted by Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, because Zolkowski had gone to seek treatment.

While there, she did not consent to a sexual assault examination.

Investigation begins FEB. 23 – Public Safety Officer Ruterbusch was informed that Zolkowski told officials that the assault occurred in the northwest lot.

Ruterbusch recalled that Delta’s soccer and softball fields are located near that lot and that the night of the alleged assault the women’s softball team was practicing on the field. The officer remembered them being there until 6 p.m. or a bit later.

Officer Ruterbusch contacted the softball assistant coach and asked if any of the players may have seen anything suspicious; he replied that they had not.

FEB. 27 – Over 1,500 sticky notes lined the walls of Delta College restrooms with messages such as “I believe her” printed on. The Post-its were quickly removed by faculty.

Battinkoff received a call from a Saginaw Parole and Probation agent who informed him of a GPS-monitored parolee who was on campus the date and time of sexual assault. The agent identified the parolee and stated that he had unusual movement on the GPS monitor. He had arrived on campus shortly after 5 p.m near the A wing.

MARCH 10 – Battinkoff received two emails from Zolkowski.

The first email alleged that Zolkowski’s mother had her on “house arrest basically,” records show. Zolkowski stated that her mother no longer wanted her participating in the investigation.

The email also stressed that she did not want anyone besides her contacted about the case.

After learning that her friend was contacted for a statement, Zolkowski stated, “The only person that should be talked to is me; I was the victim, not her.”

The second email expressed Zolkowski’s wish for her mother to be eliminated from the case as well. “If my mother calls you or Delta Public Safety, she is not allowed any information about my case. She is not longer a part of it. Thank you,” wrote Zolkowski.

MARCH 8 – The parole officer arranged for the student on parole on campus at the time of the alleged assault was given a polygraph. He was also questioned regarding his involvement in any criminal activity related to the complaint

at Delta College. The agent stated that his answers did not indicate any criminal involvement and did not indicate any deception, records show.

MARCH 13 – Battinkoff spoke to Zolkowski’s mother, asking about the claim that she no longer wanted her daughter to participate in the investigation.

Zolkowski’s mother stated that this was false. She spoke only as a concerned parent of how often Zolkowski was returning to Delta.

where it occurred. Zolkowski stated that she did not correct her before but now wanted to tell the truth, records show.

Zolkowski then wrote a signed statement and provided it to Brown, apologizing for the situation at hand. She then stated that she did not want to prosecute her friend for the alleged assault, but that she did want to provide information against him for the narcotics dealing she alleged had occurred in his apartment.

Later that day, Officer Ruterbusch received a call

Changing stories MARCH 17 – Battinkoff and Brown met with Zolkowski again at the Delta College Public Safety office. At this time, Mary claimed that her friend had committed the sexual assault. She stated that she was intoxicated and her friend had sexual intercourse with her when she was incapable of consent, records show.

Zolkowski also stated that this happened at his apartment in Saginaw Township. She said that after the assault, she drove him to Delta College and dropped him off. Mary stated that the assault did not occur at Delta College, records show.

She stated that the confusion of where the assault happened came from telling her mother that she was at Delta College, and her mother assuming that the assault happened there and then reporting that Delta College was

from the Bay County Sheriff ’s Office regarding text messages between Zolkowski and the alleged suspect. The suspect, Zolkowski’s friend, wanted to talk to the police because he felt that Zolkowski had ill intent.

He provided Ruterbusch with a series of text messages between him and Zolkowski.

The text messages indicate that Zolkowski was at Delta Feb. 22 to drop her classes and agreed to pick the man up. The messages also said that she was grabbed from behind at Walmart.

Zolkowski later messaged him and explained the Delta College police department’s investigation, saying, “Don’t participate in Delta’s investigation. If you do anything, only fingerprints are required, you don’t have to give a statement (please for goodness’ sake, don’t),” records show.

Tuition refund sought

MARCH 20 – Battinkoff questioned Zolkowski’s boyfriend at his place of employment. Battinkoff asked about what he knew about the alleged assault.

Records show that Zolkowski’s boyfriend told Battinkoff that Zolkowski originally told him that she had been raped at an unnamed friend’s apartment. She then changed her story to say that the rape occurred at Delta College.

When asked about why he thought she would lie about the incident, her boyfriend stated that Zolkowski had dropped all of her classes and told him that she had received a refund for her tuition. He assumed that the report was made so that she could receive her refund, records show.

Later that day, Battinkoff interviewed Zolkowski's friend that she claimed assaulted her.

In the interview, he explained how he met Zolkowski the day before the incident and that they hung out at his apartment. He stated that the day of the alleged assault, he asked Zolkowski for a ride to class, but then decided that he did not want to attend class. They then went back to his apartment where the two had consensual intercourse, the friend told police.

He also stated that Zolkowski had not been drinking and was not intoxicated, and that the two did not even go to Delta College the night of the incident. He provided a photograph that he had taken of Zolkowski lying on his bed, nude, after the time she stated the assault happened, records show.

Her friend had also received a text message from her 2 hours later Feb. 22 stating that she was grabbed at Walmart. She later changed the location of the rape to Delta College.

He also argued that the allegations against him did not make sense because she had messaged him saying she was raped by someone else. He denied all allegations of the assault, records show.

When Battinkoff asked him why he thought Zolkowski would make these claims, he stated that he assumed she was trying to get a refund for her tuition from Delta. April 24, he submitted his phone into evidence, records show.

MAY 12 – Battinkoff interviewed Zolkowski at Delta College.

During the interview Zolkowski admitted that the statement she submitted to Saginaw Township Police in which she said her friend had pushed her down on the floor and that she had blacked out, realizing she had been raped when she regained consciousness, records show.

Zolkowski admitted that she recalled the intercourse, and she had been a willing participant, but midway through she had told him to stop. After further questioning, she changed her statement to state that she wanted to tell him to stop but the act had stopped before she could do so.

DEC. 14 – Since then a warrant was issued by Bay County Prosecutor for the false report.

The court will assess if Zolkowski is mentally competent enough to stand trial.

Delta celebrates Native American Heritage Month with song and dance JACK RECHSTEINER UNIVERSITY CENTER – Waskwane Stonefish, a member of the Delta Pioneers’ women’s basketball team, brought her family and heritage to Delta College for Native American Heritage Month on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Waskwane introduced herself, along with the rest of her family, to the people gathered together in the Delta gymnasium for the event. Was wane talked about her history and Potawatomi heritage while also explaining the different facets of traditional and competitive powwows and the costumes and dances that accompany them.

“I’ve been dancing since I could walk; I grew up around powwows,” says Waskwane.

Waskwane said that her preferred style of dance is the more upbeat fancy dance, which is what her father Walker also performs, and that her sister Beedoskah is a jingle dress and hoop dancer.

Waskwane and Beedoskah have represented the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians across the country, winning championships as dancers at competitive powwows. Beedoskah is currently attending Michigan State University,

but made the drive to Delta College to dance with her sister and family. Waskwane’s mother and father, Mona and Walker respectively, came from southwestern Ontario to be a part of the event with their daughter.

“We celebrate love and life through song and dance. This is a very important part of our heritage” says Walker.

After introductions were made, Walker danced the stage first in full fancy dance ensemble.

After his performance, Beedoskah performed an example of the jingle dress dance and then Walker, Beedoskah and Mona performed a dance together.

To bring the event to a close, Walker asked everybody from the audience to come up and join hands to do a circle dance together. Everyone in the gymnasium linked arms with one another and moved to the beat of the drum for one final dance of the day. Walker closed out the event with a word of appreciation.

“We’re very happy and honored the school let us come here and share our tradition with you. Thank you so much,” says Walker.

Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows. But what he tweets can be very interesting to say the least. Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me

you wonder about the type of people Trump surrounds himself with, does it not? Also, let’s not forget that there is NO COLLUSION. Yet again, Trump is deflecting his problems onto the Democrats. I would like to point out that maybe Hillary Clinton is not the center of investigation right now because she is not the president.

Maybe it is a little more pressing to look into Trump’s alleged background with Russia to see if there is any collusion happening. But I mean, his tweet says there is not, so it must be true, right

On Oct. 30, President Trump tweeted about Paul Manafort, who was indicted along with campaign official Rick Gates.

Both are facing 12 charges including conspiracy against the United States.

Yes, Trump was correct when stating that their involvement was before they joined the Trump campaign, but it makes

Two attacks have occurred in the United States within two weeks. Both attacks are equally awful and should have never happened in the first place. What I found interesting was how Trump approached each of these attacks on his Twitter account.

comments about the attack in New York City referring to the man as a terrorist and claiming that he should be getting the death penalty. Compare this to the tweet he made about the shooting in Texas, about which he only tweeted once and decided not to mention the shooter at all.

Yes, he is giving his condolences to the citizens who lost their lives as well as their families, but why did he not mention the shooter repeatedly like he mentioned the attacker from New York? Why is he not demanding reform like he did after the New York attack?

I have to wonder, with past experiences being an indicator, if it has anything to do with something other than the unspeakable acts that were committed?

The gunman killed more people in the Texas attack, so why is Trump not acknowledging that it too was a terrorist attack and that there needs to be reform following the attack?

When you invite someone else into your bedroom, when do you have time for yourself? Masturbating while in a relationship can get pretty tricky, but not only is it normal, it’s encouraged by everyone that just popped up on Google.

First, let’s get one thing straight: Masturbating is not a need, it’s a want. No one will die if they stop masturbaitng. That being said, there are several health benefits to orgasiming frequently.

“I cannot fall asleep without masturbating first,” said a Collegiate staff member. “It’s part of my nighttime routine; it relaxes me and makes me forget about my anxieties.”

According to plannedparenthood.com,

masturbating releases sexual tension, reduces stress, helps with sleeping issues, improves self-esteem, relieves menstrual cramps, muscle tension and more.

Socially, we are taught that masturbation is something not to be spoken about.

Stereotypically, it’s something that girls shy away from and boys can’t get enough of, which is absolutely untrue.

Masturbation is something that you and your partner should be discussing openly in a sexual relationship.

Your sex drive is personal to yourself, and it’s unrealistic to think that it will match up with your partners all the time.

Don’t rely on your partner to meet your needs every moment of every day. The thought that individuals in a relationship don’t need to masturbate is old-school thinking. It’s 2017, and we know that loving ourselves is more important – in every

way.

According to mayoclinic. org, anxiety or depression, stress, low self-esteem and other factors all have effects on a person’s sex drive. As humans, we all encounter some of these at some point in our lives.

Masturbation can also help you understand your likes and dislikes. Selfexperimentation is just as as experimenting with your partner, if not more. Not only does it make you feel sexy on your own, it can tell you about wants and needs that you never realized you had.

Unless masturbation is taking over your sex life involving your partner, do not be afraid to get more in touch with yourself, or let your partner have some alone time. It’s good for the soul to rub that pole. It’s not obscene to flick that bean.

You do you, literally.

What happened in the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, was a tragedy. Twenty-six people didn’t go home to their parents, spouses, children, friends, neighbors or pets.

They lost their lives because of a crazed man, whose name we will not mention because it would only glorify him, who decided to systematically shoot and kill churchgoers in this small Texas town.

Our president, when asked if this attacker would be considered a terrorist, didn’t have much to say on the matter other than that this was a “mental health problem” and that neary a day after the attack it was still “too soon to talk policy.” Just days before, however, he had hardly waited 24 hours to declare the New York attacker, who had driven a truck onto a biker path in New York City, “an animal” and deemed his actions a terrorist attack.

This type of behavior from the highest-ranking politician in our country perpetrates the idea that one attacker, the white male, was mentally ill and undeserving of the “terrorist” label while the other attacker, a nonwhite male, was obviously a terrorist with no mention of the man’s mental state whatsoever. Both of these men were out to hurt as many people as possible and are more than deserving of being called a terrorist despite their nationality, race or religion.

This man was a domestic terrorist, a terrorist brewed in our own country with one goal in mind: hurting innocent people. Yet the worst thing the Texas shooter gets labeled is “mentally unstable” while the New York attacker, a man of Uzbek origins, is immediately labeled a terrorist with no further questions asked. Terrorism isn’t based on the place you come from or the god you worship. A terrorist attack is a terrorist attack, and it’s time that the

mainstream media and politicians of our country call it what it is.

Terrorism is defined as the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.

While the terrorist in Texas didn’t profusely make his cause well-known, his actions spoke loud enough that it was clear his motive was, at the very least, an attack on Christians. An attack on religion correlates with an attack on political beliefs in today’s society because the two have become so intertwined – see conservatives on abortion and gay marriage for more information.

When Dylann Roof, the man who killed nine people in a historically African American church in 2015, tried inciting, in his own terms, a “race war” he was laying the foundation for a case that could be made that he was a terrorist committing a terrorist attack.

His only motive for the shooting was to kill as many African Americans as possible to, presumably, anger them and incite a race war between white and black people. In the time of the Black Lives Matter movement, police killings of unarmed black people and numerous other racial “hot points,” Roof ’s motives were definitely political-based.

Yet Roof was neither deemed a terrorist nor tried under any crimes with the word “terrorist” associated with it. If Roof had been a Muslim, unassociated with so-called ISIS, al-Qaeda or any other extremist group, or even a black man, he’d most certainly have been labeled a “thug” or a “terrorist.” Republicans and conservatives alike threw an absolute fit when then-President Barack Obama seemingly refused to say “Islamic terrorist,” yet it’s their party that seems to refuse to call white mass shooters exactly what they are – terrorists.

The Pioneers men’s basketball team set off early on the morning of Friday, Nov. 10 to compete in a weekend of basketball at the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Basketball Invitational.

The team managed to win both of their games in an impressive fashion, outscoring their opponents by a total of 176-163 at the event.

The Pioneers’ first game was against Kalamazoo Valley Community College and resulted in a win with a score of 85-81.

The top scorer for the Pioneers was student Martel Handley with 18 points. One of the most impressive stats from this game was the 100 percent three-point conversion rate, connecting on all seven attempts taken from behind the arc.

The second game of the

weekend for the men’s basketball team was against Grand Rapids Community College Nov. 11.

The Pioneers put another win in the books with a final score of 91-82. The highest scorer for the team in this game with 19 points was Torandis Mack. Highlights of the game was something that was not represented by the final statline. Instead, it was only visible when watching the highlights from this game.

One of the intangibles that Coach Carlos McMath has credited this team with its aggression which was on full display when viewing their highlights in their game against the Grand Rapids Raiders Nov. 11. The speed in transition shown by the Pioneers and their ability to attack the rim was made with impressive accuracy.

Their execution during fast breaks was a special skill that could set them apart from other teams throughout the season.

Following their invitational over the weekend, the Pioneers set off to play against the Northwood Timberwolves’ junior varsity team Nov. 15. The team wore their evergreen and silver jerseys with pride as they put their foot on the pedal to win the game 92-54.

After compiling throughout the week, the Pioneers go to 4-0 on the season so far and have put themselves in a strong position as they move forward.

Lady Pioneers start season 2-2, rocket past Kalamazoo Valley twice ADAM PRZESLAK

The Lady Pioneers have kicked off their season with a 2-2 start beginning with their Nov. 1 game against Rochester.

They took on the JV Warriors in their season opener and were outscored in the first two quarter.

Delta was facing a deficit coming out of halftime intermission but they managed to out score Rochester in both the third and fourth quarters. However, it was was not enough and the Lady Pioneers suffered their first loss by the way of 84-72.

Next up for Delta was the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Invitational. The team traveled down to Kalamazoo Nov. 10 to first take on the hosting home team Kalamazoo Valley Cougars.

A dominant first half for Delta secured a strong lead that would remain for most of the game.

The Lady Pioneers were only outscored in the fourth quarter but by then there was no hope for Cougar revival and Delta started off the invitational with a 65-58 win.

Marisa Morton, a point guard for the Lady Pioneers, led the team in scoring as she finished with 19 points in the game. Harmany Williams had a breakout performance with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in Delta’s first win of the season.

The second game the Pioneers played in the invitational they faced off against Grand Rapids Community College Nov. 11.

Delta did not fair as well as they did in the first game as they ended up being outscored 7-20 in the first quarter alone. The team would bounce back from their first quarter performance but were forced to continue to play catch up the remainder of the game. The team ended up with their second loss of the season this time by a 12 point loss, the final score was 74-62.

Brianna Herner shined in the loss for the Pioneers with her 22 points, seven rebounds and one steal.

Nov. 18 Delta took to their home court to face the

Kalamazoo Valley Cougars for the second time. A highly competitive first quarter saw Delta leading Kalamazoo 18-17.

A low-scoring high intensity second quarter followed with Kalamazoo barely holding onto the lead at the half. Then, scoring 14 in the third and 24 in the fourth, a fierce offensive streak kicked in for Delta. The Lady Pioneers emerged with the 60-49 victory. They now have two wins on the season both of which have been over Kalamazoo.

Williams again led the team and put up a double-double in the stats columns with her 22 points and ten rebounds. The team combined for 25 total rebounds with Rylee Pankow and Brianna Herner contributing six rebounds each.

The Lady Pioneers look to go for their third win of the season Dec. 1 when Lansing Community College comes to the Pioneer Gym. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. start time.

COMMENTARY REVIEW Native American Mascots: honorable or disrespectful?

ADAM PRZESLAK A few years ago, outcry from a sizeable portion of NFL fans erupted, but it wasn’t about national anthem protesters or Colin Kaepernick, it was about the Washington Redskins. It seemed as if, finally, football fans were putting their foots down and demanding a name change for a tasteless, racist team mascot. Some sports commentators even declared that they’d never refer to them as the Redskins again but just the “Washington football team” until the name was changed.

Then, the next big media outcry came, people forgot all about the anti-Redskins movement, and we moved on in society. I think it’s time we renew the fight on Native American mascots for sports teams. There is a fine line between respectful, tasteful mascots and unrespectful representations of Native Americans.

The Central Michigan University Chippewas, in my opinion, are a model representation of utilizing a Native American nickname for sports teams. By simply using Chippewas, the name of one of the largest Native American tribes in our area, I feel that they are respectfully honoring them. Some local high schools’ use of the nickname “Warriors,” however, represents the old Native American stereotype that all Natives were simply ravaging, violent people and should be changed. If they’d like to keep the Warriors nickname, then change the mascot or logo to something else.

Those who claim there is nothing wrong with the use of Native American team names such as the Redskins or Indians often rebuttal that many Native Americans simply don’t care. “Keep the name”-ers claim that for every Native American that agrees the nicknames and mascots should change there is an almost equal, if not larger, group of Natives that believe they should remain. All the opposition’s opinions seems to backed up by a 2016 Washington Post poll that claims 9 out 10 Native Americans are not offended by the Redskins name.

However, with a simple google search that poll can easily be debunked and research showing that Native

American really do care can be found. The poll done by the Washington Post exclusively used phone calls to gather their information. By calling Americans and simply asking “Are you Native American?” there can be three major problems that arise.

The first being that some Americans, no matter of what country their ancestors are from, consider themselves “Native Americans” in the sense that they were born in America making them natives of the country. Also, plenty of Americans claim to be Natives although they have no actual proof of who or when their ancestors were of Native American descent other than family anecdotes. Even I’ve been told before that,“I think you’re great great great grandmother was partially Chippewa, nobody is really sure.” Also, the biggest factor, people can lie over the phone and it’s not an absolutely crazy idea that people would pretend to be something they are not to screw up poll and survey results.

The Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes, a group composed of leaders from the Chichasaw, Creek, Cherokee, Seminole and Choctaw Nations, released resolution statements in both 2001 and 2013 calling for the end of athletic team names that denigrate Native American cultures and society.

The council represents 400,000 indigenous peoples so it is a very powerful statement from a lot of Natives.

The Council of the Navajo Nation, one of the largest Native American tribes in the country, also voiced their opinion in 2014 with the release of a similar statement. The council approved a bill labeled: “Opposing the Use of Disparaging References to Native People in Professional Sports Franchises”, which specifically threw shade at the Washington Redskins.

So, two large representative bodies of Native Americans have expressed that they and their constituencies want the use of Native American derogatory terms removed from amateur and professional sports. That seems like a fairly large number of people displeased with this matter to me.
