Breaking down local elections International Observe the Moon Night brings crowd to Planetarium JACK RECHSTEINER JOSEPH THORNTON BAY CITY – In recognition of International Observe the Moon Night on Oct. 28, the Delta College Planetarium hosted a free event for the public to give the community a chance to enjoy this annual worldwide public event.

Unfortunately, on this Bay City night, the third time was not the charm during their third annual recognition of international night. The sky was relatively cloudy and conditions didn’t allow for optimal viewing of the moon, but that didn’t discourage astronomer and planetarium manager Mike Murray, who still proceeded with the educational program.

“There are a lot of things that we here at the planetarium can control, but the weather isn’t one of them,” says Murray.

The Planetarium made multiple informational handouts available to all attendees including a high-definition image of what the moon looks like in the Bay City sky, moon observation logs and general

facts about the moon. The presentation was done in the planetarium’s Dome360 theater and gave specific information on what phase the moon was in on the night of Oct. 28, as well as information on identifying lunar features and night sky wonders.

Murray believes events like this are a great opportunity to increase interest in astronomy as a science and that astronomy is a simple science that everyone can enjoy.

“Astronomy touches on everything. It helps us understand the earth and earth’s atmosphere. Also, anybody can do this. Astronomy gives us a chance to learn about something bigger than ourselves, something that is beautiful and teaches perspective,” says Murray.

Did you know Michigan is hosting its local and state elections Nov. 6 of this year? Do you know what issues are up on the ballot this year for your county? Have you wanted to get more involved with deciding what happens in our country?

In 2016 the entire nation was engrossed in following the presidential race for who would sit in the White House, but states around the country have seen a decline in the participation – and even awareness of – local elections. It is estimated that on average 20 percent of registered voters cast their ballot in local elections, and it’s not uncommon for voter turnout in special elections for vacant state and local offices to be able to be counted on both hands.

The reason this is so alarming is that these elections are the ones that concern the offices and issues that have the most immediate and impactful implications for voters in their day-to-day lives. One could argue that local elections have more impact on what happens in our lives than elections on the federal level.

This doesn’t just mean people running for mayor and council positions, but also who’s going to be your local judge, sheriff, clerk, school board member and every other public officials. Local elections concern community issues that are brought directly to the voters through ballot measures and initiatives.

What it simply boils down to is that local elections are what affect you the most. The quality of life in your area is what is on the election ballot.

Now that you’re all fired up to do some local voting, you might have some questions on how to vote or where to vote. Graciously the Secretary of State was able to provide answers for us.

Q: Do I need my voter registration card in order to vote?

A: No. As long as you are in the correct polling location, your name will appear on the registration list supplied to your precinct.

Q: Do I need to show identification in order to vote?

A: Michigan does have a voter identification requirement at the polls. Voters are asked to present an acceptable photo ID, which includes a government-issued driver’s license or photo ID, a US passport, a military photo ID, a student photo ID from a high school or an institution of higher learning, or a tribal photo ID card. The ID does not need your address.

Q: When can I vote?

A: Election day in Michigan is Tuesday, Nov. 7, and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Q: Do I have to vote the entire ballot?

A: You are not required to vote the entire ballot. You may pick and choose the races or ballot questions for which you want to vote. Skipping sections does not invalidate your ballot.

Q: Does Michigan allow early voting?

A: No. However, qualified Michigan voters can cast absentee ballots before election day. A registered voter may

obtain an absent voter ballot if they are 60 years of age or older, unable to vote without assistance, expecting to be out of town on election day, in jail awaiting arraignment or trial or are unable to attend the polls due to religious reasons. To request an absent voter ballot you must submit the absentee form to your city or township clerk, both of which can be found on www.

Court date set Melissa Wallace: A deeper look into being head in rape hoax of Disability Resources AUBRIE SMITH

Mary Zolkowski, a former Delta student, is to attend a competency hearing in Bay City where the court will determine if she is fit to stand trial on Nov. 14.

On Feb. 22, Zolkowski claimed that she was sexually assaulted by an unknown black male in the northwest parking lot of Delta’s main campus. After changing her story several times, the rape was unfounded.

Zolkowski is charged with one count of false report of a felony, punishable by up to four years of incarceration and a $2,000 fine. If the court finds Zolkowski incompetent to stand trial, she may be required to undergo mental health treatment.

The Delta Collegiate will be following the story on site Nov. 14. Look for updates on our website and in the next issue of the Collegiate.

Melissa Wallace is the head of Disability Resources at Delta College. Her job entails having to communicate services and outcomes to administration as well as consulting students about individual accommodations that a student may need. Wallace also trains staff members and is an advocate for students.

Q- What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

A- The most rewarding part is when my students work to the best of their ability by using simple intervention.; They are able to achieve their potential.

It’s also rewarding working with teachers to make sure all needs are met. When they follow through with all that is asked of them, it is rewarding to watch.

Q- What got you interested in pursuing this as your career?

A- My mom was a teacher and I became a teacher as well. As I continued working I knew I wanted to work more on an individual basis with kids. I went back to school and got my master’s in social work, then started a social work job at the school I was previously teaching.

opening here at Delta. I applied but didn’t get it. I waited five more months and reapplied and got the job.

Q- How has the work that you’re doing had an impact on your life?

A- This is the cool thing about finding something that you love to do. My children are obviously my life, but this is also my life.

It doesn’t feel like work. It’s a service. I am serving. It’s almost like a calling that priests get, you know? That’s what it’s like when you’re living your life doing what you love to do. When I’m driving to work I’m pumped.

Q- What is the most common disability you run into during your job?

A- Learning disabilities, invisible, ADHD, dyslexia.

People with learning disabilities have on average normal higher intelligence, they are more empathetic people because they know what it’s like to struggle.

They are also hard workers and generally pretty cool people.

I like it when kids look at their disability from different perspectives; more empowered.

Q- What is the toughest part of your job?

A- When staff or faculty members don’t work with the students and don’t work with me and give me crap. It is very upsetting. Having to push against the attitude that everyone is getting extra as well as having to constantly prove to people why you need a certain accommodation. People who are cognitively rigid and don’t get it and don’t want to get it are the toughest part.

Q- How you do individualize and approach each student’s plan differently, go about catering to everyone’s needs?

A- I first started off by learning the law and sticking to the laws. Then realized that job is like being a veterinarian where there are lots of different types of animals. I needed to know about all the different levels of ability and be able to speak and understand how the disabilities can impact the learning environment. I individualize by looking at the person, oneon-one, getting to know them.

It’s all individual, individual, individual. It’s not focused on the ability but on the core of the person.

Delta College Public Safety responded to a complaint of suspicious behavior.

An anonymous witness reportedly overheard a student discussing throwing acid on someone. The investigation revealed that the student was engaged in a joking conversation with other students.

Oct. 25, 2017

Delta College Public Safety took a complaint from a student alleging that her exboyfriend harassed her while on campus. The complaint remains under investigation and has been referred to Delta College’s Title IX Coordinator.

Delta College Public Safety responded to five traffic crashes in the parking lot and responded to four medical and injury reports.

Students and staff find serenity through hunting Kalimah Johnson speaks about JOSEPH THORNTON domestic violence UNIVERSITY CENTER – The hunters not to go alone their Wiesenauer warns new Michigan hunting season is well underway, and staff and students alike have found a way to relieve their stress through the sport.

Student Brandon Wardlow says he has fond memories of hunting and enjoys being able to go out to appreciate nature.

“My favorite part is in the morning, watching the woods wake up. You get out there early and you really get to see everything come to life as the sun rises,” says Wardlow.

Math professor Eric Wiesenauer has found that hunting gives him time to strengthen his faith and selfreflect.

“I don’t have a lot of time in my day where I’m able to clear my head and be static. I enjoy hunting because it forces me to be still and introspective. It gives me the opportunity to have conversations with God and get to know him better, as well as myself,” says Wiesenauer.

“Odds are you aren’t going to shoot something every time you go hunting. Many times you won’t even see anything, so patience is important for hunters. This is the first year that I’ve ever gotten a buck and I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Wiesenauer.

Wiesenauer also encourages hunters not to go overboard with spending too much time and money.

“There is a plethora of hunting equipment, but you should set a limit on yourself beforehand and realize that it does take time. Spending a ton of money isn’t going to change that.” says Wiesenauer.

SAGINAW – “Any opportunity to have people learn and ask questions is a very important event to have,” says Johnson.

Johnson was the keynote speaker for a community-based reception and presentation on the topic of “Help, Healing and Creating Hope” within a college environment, which was one of Delta College’s events throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event was held Oct. 23, a gray and rainy Monday, in the dry respite of the Ricker Center auditorium from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“I’m hoping that the people who have come for the event will get what it is they are searching for,” says Mary Worthy, a Delta College faculty member at the event.

Before the lecture began, a series of short videos were projected onto a screen behind the podium, all focusing on the theme of domestic violence.

Johnson was introduced to the stage by Delta faculty as someone who “keeps it real and knows what she speaks about.”

Kalimah Johnson is the CEO of the Sexual Assault Services and Holistic Awareness (SASHA) Center in Detroit. Johnson has been an advocate and counselor to survivors of sexual assault and partner violence for more than 20 years. She is considered an industry expert on topics related to culturally specific programming for assault survivors, healthy relationships, emotional intelligence and maintaining wellbeing. Johnson has also gotten over 100 untested sexual assault kits to be tested by the state of Michigan, which brought a degree of closure to the victims of those assaults.

New policy stresses intolerable teacher and student romances

UNIVERSITY CENTER – The Delta College Senate has recently approved an update in a previous board policy regarding amorous relationships between students and their professors.

This policy prohibits any Delta professor from teaching any person of current or past romantic involvement, regardless of student’s age or consent. The update is intended to specifically outline the punishment of a professor or other faculty member being involved in a relationship with anyone whom they are in an authoritative position over.

The Collegiate reached out to Senate president Justin Bamberger for an interview concerning the policy but failed to respond before publication.

Deta student Paige Lupcke perceives the policy updates to be a step in the right direction

and stresses the importance of a definitive line between teacher and student.

“You can be friends with a professor, but it shouldn’t turn into a romantic relationship.

Being friends with your professor is one thing, but it should never cross into the territory of anything more than a friendship,” says Lupcke.

English professor Crystal Starkey sees the policy as more than fair and expects other professors to understand their position and why these relationships are not tolerated.

“Teachers are in a position of power over their students, and a relationship between the two can lead to exploitation or a number of different negative situations.

These relationships create a very vulnerable party on one end, and it just isn’t right to pursue them,” says Starkey.

Starkey says that the line between teacher and student should be one that is drawn very deep in the dirt and disallows any misinterpretation.

“I have only given a student my phone number under extreme circumstances that directly affected their performance in my class. I advise others to keep everything on the record in Delta email and don’t put yourself in a situation where you could possibly lose your job,” says Starkey.

Hungry but unsure what to make? Have no fear, fellow hungerer, for I’ve got just the recipe for you!

This recipe doesn’t follow any particular rules and is easy to make! All it involves is having food and a stove.

The first step is to assess your pantry or cupboards. See any food in there? Great! You’re on to a good start. Just make sure that you have rice, as this is the foundation of the meal you are about to prepare!

Look closely and tenderly at your food. Caress it, smell it, maybe even kiss it. Done? Great. Still kissing those beans? No problem. Take your time, I’ll give you two some privacy…

Usually, when I’m craving something to eat, I’ll start with rice. If you don’t have rice, stop reading this and go buy some. Dumbass.

Prepare the rice according to the directions of whatever package whence the rice comes.

While the rice is cooking, go on over to your fruit – in particular, your canned fruit, all sexy in its tin container. I prefer pineapple, but I guess you could choose any other sweet fruit if you simply abhor pineapple.

It’s time to assess the beans. Are you two done making out? Finally. Undress those curvy beans, whether it be pinto, garbanzo or what have you, by releasing them from the tin prison in which they reside.

Let’s talk about sauce. Actually, I don’t really care how you make use of sauce; in fact, I don’t care if

you even make this meal I’m describing to you. Do whatever you want, asshole. Live your own life.

OK, but apropos of la sauce, I prefer sriracha when I’m cooking this meal. Like I said, I couldn’t care less about the sauce you use. Just make sure it’s sexy.

You’ve got all the ingredients prepared now hopefully. Once the rice is done sizzling and shdizzling, it’s time to commence the real cooking.

Get a frying pan and mix all the aforementioned ingredients together! Typically, I will put the rice in first, then the fruit, followed by the beans and finally the sauce atop it all. But, if you’re too cool for school, you can put the ingredients into the pan however which way you’d like. It’s similar to the debate of milk first or cereal first. Being a cerealfirst man myself, the former feels more natural and yields better results.

OK, you’ve put everything into the pan. Good job. You’ve just done the hardest part. Now it’s time to watch your sexy food do its thing. Watch that food you’re about to devour sizzle… Soon it will be in your mouth… then down your throat… then in your stomach… then God knows where it goes after that.

Once the concoction has reached the ideal color, smell and appearance, take that bad boy off the burner and eat! Consume! Munch! Nosh! Bon appétit, my friends. I hope you enjoy this recipe that I love dearly, which I call “A Whole Bunch of Nonsense.”

SAGINAW – There is a great sports venue in our very own backyard that’s easy on the wallet, features fast-paced action and allows you to escape the blistering cold this winter. The Dow Event Center in downtown Saginaw has been the home of the Saginaw Spirit, a major junior hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League since 2002.

The Spirit plays their regular season through mid-March, offering a great chance to get indoors throughout the winter and watch an entertaining battle between future hockey stars. Tickets are extremely cheap for a sporting event as well. Single game tickets for adults range from $15 to $19 depending on which of three levels of seating you choose. Students and seniors get a $2 discount for the upper and middle levels but the executive level, the level closest to the ice, remains the same. Children get $3 knocked off their ticket price excluding executive seating.

Regardless, any of those prices are still less than half of what you’d pay for tickets to any major league professional sports game like the Red Wings. The price of parking at the Dow Event Center is only $5 while parking at the Little Caesars Arena, the new home of the Red Wings, is often more expensive than tickets for a Spirit game alone.

Throughout their season they also have promotional nights such as the Guns and Hoses game in which local police and firefighters take to the ice to play a game that benefits a local charity, which takes place Dec. 2 this season. They also hold an annual “teddy bear toss” where fans are encouraged to throw new or gently used stuffed animals onto the ice following the Spirit’s first goal. The toys are collected and donated to children for the holiday season; this season the event will take place Dec. 3.

A Saginaw Spirit game offers all the typical amenities Americans have come to associate with sporting events like hot dogs, beer and 50-50 raffle tickets. It’s an enjoyable yet affordable outing for the whole family, a group of friends or even a date night.

Delta College Love Your Melon chapter fights against cancer AUBRIE SMITH

Delta’s Love Your Melon chapter became an official Delta club this past month. The group actively fights against cancer by being a student chapter of the apparel brand.

“Love Your Melon is an apparel brand dedicated to giving a hat to every child battling cancer in America while partnering with nonprofits,” says Hannah Golden, crew captain.

Though this is the second year for Delta’s Love Your Melon chapter, the crew says it is their first successful one.

“People are so confused about what we do. Everyone thinks we sell the hats. We do not sell the hats, we’re actively fighting against cancer,” says Golden.

Though the club does not sell the fashionable hats, they

do encourage individuals to buy them online. Half of the profit for each beanie goes directly to nonprofits to fight cancer.

The official Delta club is considered full with 30 members, although they still urge interested individuals and volunteers to contact them for events and table sits.

They ask everyone to like their Facebook page and follow them on Twitter and Instagram.

“We get credits for all of the followers that we get. Through that, we can go to events and do hospital visits,” says Golden.

“Every single follower counts.”

Currently, the Delta Love Your Melon chapter has 400 credits, but the team is looking forward to hitting 1,000 so they can do a hospital visit. After their

first 100 credits, they were able to get clearance for a swab drive.

The event will test if individuals are able to donate bone marrow.

Currently, the club is trying to get the event approved to be held at Delta.

According to Love Your Melon’s website over $2 million and 100 thousand beanies have been given to their nonprofit partners, a group of field workers in pediatric oncology, research funders and families of children battling cancer.

All Delta students have access to free tutoring of all topics in the library through the Teaching and Learning Center. Tutors of multiple core subjects are more than willing to assist you and are a valuable resource that few

other colleges or universities offer. Did I mention that it is free?

Center courtyard a natural getaway The center courtyard at Delta College is a serene location to unwind after a long day.

Surprisingly, this beauty in the middle of campus is often vacant and left untravelled by students.

Personally, I make every effort to walk through there at least once a day. Sometimes it is even more efficient to do so than to walk all the way around the rectangular building. My only worry is the squirrels in the courtyard. How do they get in? More importantly, how do they get out? Are we keeping squirrels hostage?

Student food pantry serves up help for students The student food pantry is attempting to help students that are struggling to pay for groceries and to consistently have meals on the table. We all know how hard it is to be a college student paying for gas, amenities, and rent on top of education costs. Thankfully, the student food pantry may be able to ease your burden, providing groceries to students in need.

For anyone looking to access these resources that Delta offers or hoping to acquire additional information, the best place to start would be the Student and Civic Engagement Office in room A-003.

Delta student takes top 10 in statewide barrel racing

JESSICA SIEROCKI If you ever need to find Delta student Casey Robertson, chances are she is out riding at her family’s horse farm in Birch Run or on the road kicking up dust in statewide barrel racing competitions.

At 22 years old, Robertson is one of the top 10 barrel racers in the state of Michigan through the Michigan Barrel Racing Association. This was an achievement in the making ever since she was a baby.

“The day I was brought home from the hospital my parents set me bareback on one of our horses. I’ve been riding ever since I could walk,” says Robertson.

Robertson first started competing as a barrel racer in the Michigan Barrel Racing Association in the Mavericks class for kids 16 and under. Once she turned 12, she started openly competing against older racers.

Ever since then, Robertson has earned multiple awards for racing.

“I won the Mavericks class for finals a couple of times. Points are tallied up and at the end of the year at finals [competitors] are rated and they hand out special prizes. I’ve also been in the top 10 for the divisions just about every year that I’ve been competing,” says Robertson.

Robertson was named the youngest rookie of the year for the Mid-States Rodeo Association at age 12 and held the title until recently. She also placed ninth overall in the first division and seventh in second division in the Michigan Barrel Racing Association.

All 15 of Robertson’s horses are bred to compete, whether it is in roping or barrel racing. She says that the key to barrel racing is in the timing, “It’s all about how fast you

can do it. I think the fastest time I’ve had with was around 16 seconds,” says Robertson.

Being a strong competitor takes serious commitment to the sport. Robertson has traveled all over the states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and has even competed in Canada.

“It’s a lifestyle, not just a hobby. The horses depend on you, and the horses aren’t going to thrive if you don’t take care of them. You’re not really doing this for yourself; you’re doing it for the horses,” says Robertson.

Robertson says racing is in her blood and would not change that for any reason.

“I’ve done it my whole life.

I was raised to do it and don’t really know any other way to live.

If one day I woke up and didn’t have horses I wouldn’t know what to do with myself,” says Robertson.

Delta students put on show of lying, scheming and doorbell ringing

UNIVERSITY CENTER – What do bags of money, elderly aunts and a pirate have in common? They can all be seen in this year’s fall play “Larceny and Old Lace.” This spoof of the classic “Arsenic and Old Lace” is family-friendly and open to students and community members alike.

The plot of the play revolves around two innocent-looking aunts and their ordinary family, but their life is anything but. It turns out that the aunts are experts at heists and they are not the only members of the family who can rob a place or two.

Harold, played by Weston Smith, has to figure out a way to keep his aunts’ stealing a secret, prevent his fiancee from finding out and needs to keep a constant eye on Uncle Charlie. Did I mention that he thinks he’s a pirate? Crazy Uncle Charlie takes burying the aunts’ treasure to a whole new level.

Lane Birchmeier plays Charlie and is a highlight character of the show. His dramatic outbursts and authentic pirate drawl were some of my favorite parts of the entire performance.

Another notable character duo is Mordred and

Lesley, played by Ryan McConnell and Ashley Chapman respectively. Mordred is the unexpected family guest who intimidates everyone even while disguised as a female.

Another standout character was Smith’s portrayal of Harold. His facial expressions were priceless and the bit between him and the offscreen cab driver was hilarious. Not to mention that he kept answering the doorbell every time it rang, and I mean it rang constantly. Never before have I seen so many visitors at an old woman’s house at four in the morning. He and the other cast members bring sprinkles of comedy throughout the play that keep attendees continuously interested in the plot.

The play’s setting was a perfect replica of what an old woman’s house would look like. Fancy old furniture and a stained glass window were perfect additions that gave an authentic feel to the props.

Kudos to the hair, makeup and costume designers for turning a group of young college students into old ladies, wrinkles and all. The costumes were appropriate for the ages portrayed and added that extra touch of authenticity.

SPOOKY FUN ON HALLOWEEN

“NaNoWriMo.” It sounds like an acronym for some strange kind of chemistry solution or the brand name of some kind of futuristic piece of nanotechnology. The real answer is much simpler, but just as exciting.

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and it is for anyone who has ever thought of writing a novel. It was officially started up 17 years ago by a ragtag band of San Francisco Bay writers that had an idea that caught on with the rest of the world. The plan was to have all participants sign up as an official NaNoWriMo writer and then have all of November to work toward the goal of writing a 50,0000-word novel by the end of it.

“Because, from my years of work as an editor, I knew that having a set of unbendable rules and a merciless deadline was absolutely essential in giving writers the mental focus and shared sense of toil necessary to tackle daunting projects,” says Chris Baty, NaNoWriMo founder.

And with that, National Novel Writing Month was born! The first year, 140 people signed up online and participated. The next year that number grew to 5,000. The amount of people wanting to be a part of the writing community spread internationally, and in 2007 NaNoWriMo established itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (which was formerly known as the Office of Letters and Light.)

The establishment of the NaNoWriMo entity as well as the growing community helped to cement

National Novel Writing Month. It is a daunting marathon to finally write that novel you’ve been meaning to, but it all gets a little easier when you have an event deadline to stick to along with people from all over the world being stuck in the same boat with you. The NaNoWriMo site features regional and international message boards where people have friendly and funny conversations while supporting each other’s projects. It’s equal parts writing bootcamp and rollicking party.

“NaNoWriMo ignites people’s superheroic creative powers every year by empowering them to write their stories. It takes courage, grit, resilience and wild, imaginative leaps to write 50,000 words of a novel in a month. Our stories save us from villainous forces that we encounter every day. Our stories determine the future of our world,” says Grant Faulkner, executive director of NaNoWriMo. ‘Blade Runner 2049’ reminds us why some movies are worth seeing in theaters

When it was first shot in 1982, “Blade Runner” took place in a constantly raining, dystopian 2019, which makes for a slightly unsettling feeling watching its follow-up in rainy fall of dystopian 2017.

Set 30 years after the events of the first film, “Blade Runner 2049” has Ryan Gosling cast in the lead role as LAPD Officer K. K unearths an unnerving mystery that has the potential to plunge what’s left of the futuristic society into chaos. This detective work, complete with forensics and DNA databases, leads K to find Rick Deckard, the character Harrison Ford played in the original movie and still plays in “Blade Runner 2049”.

Clocking in at over 160 minutes, this movie is sharp, beautiful and worth watching every minute of. “Blade Runner 2049” expands on the themes of its predecessor and wrestles with what it means to be human as well as venturing into the nature of identity, individuality and

slavery.

Unlike most long-awaited sequels that only serve to remix the characters of the original movie, director Denis Villeneuve and his team manage to go above and beyond that. The topics raised in “Blade Runner 2049” have a conversation with the questions raised in the first movie and play with them a little. They have managed to make this sequel one of the most philosophical and challenging sci-fi movies to come out in recent years.

A crashing wave of gorgeous visuals and cinematography set the stage for the movie, with Roger Deakins behind the camera creating a veritable feast for the senses. The film is picturesque enough to be enjoyed with the volume all the way down, but you would miss the remarkable sound design that turns this movie into something you don’t just see but that you experience. “Blade Runner 2049” is one of the most stunningly

shot and scored films of the past few years.

It would have been easy to reboot “Blade Runner” by simply continuing Deckard’s story from the first movie or even worse yet – remaking it – especially in the current media climate that seems centered around copying old works just for the sake of fanservice nostalgia.

This movie doesn’t just cheaply sell off the legacy of “Blade Runner” to make a hit blockbuster; it grows upon what the first movie created. The two films work together with each other to make the entire cinematic arc that much richer.

It’s too early to say if “Blade Runner 2049” will leave behind the same kind of impact (I will say I’m going to be watching this movie many times again in the future.) But it is easily one of the best films to come out in my recent memory. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss the chance to see it in theaters.

Workshop inspires local artists to publish themselves JACK RECHSTEINER

Martin Luther. Thomas Paine. John Calvin. The French Revolution. Do-it-yourself punk.

What do all these things have in common?

All of them were rebels and revolutionaries who used selfpublished “zines” to broadcast their ideas and opinions. The word “zine” is a shortened form of the word “fanzine,” but has come to mean any sort of DIY, self-created print publication.

Under this definition Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense,” Martin Luther’s “95 Theses” and the political pamphlets of the French Revolution are the same as the independent books being made in the worlds of punk and underground art.

“If you ask me, zines are what caused the modern world to come into existence,” says Chris Maddox.

Maddox is now Central Michigan University’s current Barstow artist-in-residence. On Nov. 3, he held a lecture and workshop about the artistry and process involved in making a zine. The workshop was held in a Wightman Hall art studio in Mount Pleasant from 4 to 7 p.m. in an event that was free and open to the public.

“I know people who have made zines that were really cool, so when I heard about the workshop I wanted to come and see about making my own,” says Midland artist Rebekah Doepel.

Maddox was a graphic

designer and then was the creative director for a company bought by Amazon before he returned to graduate school with the vision to develop an informed approach to what it means to be an artist in the contemporary world. Graduate school led Maddox to becoming CMU’s artist-in-residence so that he could focus on his creative endeavors and share what he learned with other artists.

“I was drawn to books because I can start with this structure, this form of a book, and then take my art and bring the structure and creativity together,” says Maddox.

Zines are alternative, occasionally experimental publications that are distributed outside of the mainstream.

They have the opportunity to reach small, specific audiences and have the ability to create intimate, subcultural communities. A number of known and renowned magazines started off as small zines like Dazed & Confused or Cometbus.

The workshop starts off with everyone getting to know each other around the art studio table while looking over an impressive collection of zines from the ‘60s up until present day. There is an emphasis placed on the fact that zines are a format that are available for anyone to create.

Gerrymandering needs to go As the old saying goes, “To the victor belongs the spoils.”

This slogan has been used to describe victories, both in war and in politics, for centuries and simply means whoever wins will get much more than a tally in the win column. In war, it meant the winner would get the riches, goods and land of the conquered, while in the political forum it has come to mean redrawn district boundaries in favor of the victor’s political party.

The practice of redrawing the lines of districts occurs

every 10 years following the completion of a federal census. Who is it that redraws these districts, you ask?

The state legislature with the process being piloted by the legislature’s majority party. Meaning, if Democrats are a majority in the Michigan state legislature, then they will be in charge of redrawing districts if it so happens to be a census year.

These lines are often drawn to benefit – you guessed it – the majority party. This is done in an attempt to help members of the party keep or win seats in the local or federal government. This process is called gerrymandering and, unfortunately, has been a common feature of American politics since the 19th century.

Although some states have taken measures to prevent gerrymandering by forcing bipartisan committees or neutral groups to draw the new lines, Michigan remains a state where gerrymandering runs rampant. Michigan is currently running under districts drawn by a Republican majority legislature in 2011. During the redistricting process Republicans strategically carved up the state to draw districts in such a manner that areas known to be Democratic strongholds were split and lumped in with conservative-voting areas.

Basically, that means that both major political parties have decided that they’d rather redraw the lines around those voters than persuade them to change their vote. I

11 have to give both Republicans and Dems credit though – they do think pretty far outside the box.

For example, Lansing and East Lansing of Inghram County, the location of Michigan State University and a surplus of often left-leaning college students, have been split into three different congressional districts. So, in the 2016 presidential election Ingham County was painted blue in support of Hillary Clinton who won the county by a landslide. While, during that same election year, the three districts that the Lansing area is included in all went red for Republican representatives. The liberals of Ingham County were split up and grouped with a large number of historically conservative voters.

It’s upsetting to know that democracy is being upset and overthrown at even the most local of elections. Both Republicans and Democrats are guilty of doing this and reaping the rewards, otherwise known as seats in the Michigan Legislature or Congress. The only answer seems to be following in some other states’ footsteps and ordering a bipartisan committee to draw the lines or hire an outside source – with the money Michigan doesn’t have – to complete the redistricting. Regardless, it’s time the beating around the bush comes to an end and districts are drawn up fairly.

Collegiate tries it: Aubrie gives up Netflix for a week AUBRIE SMITH

Day One: When I was told that I was giving up Netflix for a week, I got defensive really fast. I had multiple reasons why that just wouldn’t be possible for me: I work 70 hours a week, that’s my way of relaxing; I live with my boyfriend who watches a lot of TV, I can’t escape it; I’m right in the middle of a show, I can’t stop now!

If Shailene Woodley can live without a TV, then I can too.

The first day wasn’t as hard as I was expecting. I worked a 10hour shift and then had some homework afterward. I decided to go to sleep early instead of watching two episodes of “Riverdale.” It didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would, which is kind of disappointing to be honest.

Day Two: My immediate anger toward this challenge clouded my memory. I woke up this morning, realizing that I’ve only had a TV for about a year. Before that, I didn’t even have Netflix or any form of TV-watching in my life. This week was going to be a breeze.

Day Three: Last night, I went to bed early again. This is starting to get really beneficial for my sleeping habits. Not

to mention, my boyfriend now leaves the room to get his Netflix habits out of the way, so hello more alone time!

What a good side effect.

Day Four: Today has been tough, I’m not going to lie. I have the entire day off. It’s been easy when work and school take up most of my day, but I only get one full day off a week, and Netflix is my go-to relaxation. It seems cruel to take that away from me for a work project. I mean, really, that means I’m working on my day off, does it not?

Somehow I’ve made it through. A lot of homework is done, the fridge is full and I spent some money that I shouldn’t have. I will admit, as much as I missed “Riverdale” today, it felt good to have some things out of the way. Spending the whole day in bed may be a bit overrated.

Day Five: Is today the last day? Or am I expected to go seven days? My Netflix withdrawal is starting to kick in. Is Hulu OK? I mean, they only said Netflix, they didn’t technically say all TV. That being said, I actually had breakfast with a friend this morning!

Usually, come Friday (if I actually have the day off), I have to turn

down every event ever because all of my homework is due on Saturday. Spending more time being productive in the beginning of the week allowed me to relax in different ways at the end of the week.

However, I may have watched an episode of “The Good Doctor.” But hey, that’s Hulu! Not technically breaking the rules, right? Either way, It’s just so good!

Overall, it’s a bit harder to unplug the TV than I’d originally thought, though it made me much more productive. Netflix is, and will probably remain, my primary source for relaxation. However, I realized that if I spend less time on Netflix in the beginning of the week, I feel more relaxed and less hectic at the end of the week. Netflix is good in moderation, I’ll just have to adjust my routine a bit.

When cheating becomes cheating AUBRIE SMITH

Cheating has become all too common in today’s society. We’ve all been cheated on, or at least know someone who has. I personally have had four serious relationships in my lifetime; three of them ended because of the other person cheating.

While grabbing a drink with some friends the other night, one of my friends graciously said, “Did D really cheat though?”

I was so taken aback by the question. The answer was

so painfully obvious to me: Yes, he abso-frickin’-lutely cheated on me.

For some clarification: My boyfriend at the time was “best friends” with his ex. I quickly found him lying about his whereabouts, saying he was at parties and then never remembering who was there, other friends not remember seeing him, etc. One night, after catching him in a lie, I asked for his phone – something I’ve always been against. His reply was, “If I give you my phone, you’ll break up with me.”

Not only had he been texting his ex every single day, but he had spent a few nights with her. He swore that “cuddling” was the only thing that happened. When I asked if they hooked up, he said, “Of course not, I don’t cheat.”

But to me, he did cheat. Spending the night with an ex and cuddling, in my opinion, is undoubtedly cheating.

My friends, though, had an entire different opinion, and that’s when it clicked: Cheating is ambiguous.

It’s defined differently by every individual. Cheating can simply meaning hiding something from your partner.

It can range from texting another individual every day, behind your significant other’s back, to actually hooking up.

The scary thing is that you may not know you’ve crossed the line until you actually cross it. You never know how fragile your relationship is until you break it.

And, if you cross that line, is it repairable? Maybe not.

Know your boundaries. You should be able to define your partner’s version of cheating just as easily as you can define your own. More importantly, know that they don’t have to be the same definition. If you both see different things as cheating, that is perfectly fine as long as you understand that you can’t cross their line. Respect the cheating boundaries, even if you don’t agree with them. Cheating is something that, in most cases, is not forgiven, so make sure you understand the line before you accidentally cross it.

#MeToo: An overrated need for Oktoberfest is beer… I mean here JACK RECHSTEINER validation AUBRIE SMITH The #MeToo movement hit Twitter and Facebook a week ago in hopes of bringing awareness to the amount of sexual abuse, harassment and wrongdoings that flood women every day.

The posts ranged from simply “Me too” all the way to detailed descriptions of rape, assault and harassment. Quite frankly, it went too far.

As someone who has dealt with sexual assault, I found the movement almost ridiculous. I was ready for it to end from the first post I saw.

I don’t need validation for the emotional damage that was caused by my assault. I worked hard to get over what happened to me, and I don’t need the internet to congratulate me or to let me know that people are “here for me,” when, in fact, they weren’t. I don’t need to publicize what I went through to make a difference – I made the difference within myself.

These posts flooded my timelines to the point of me logging off completely. For two days, I couldn’t escape them and set aside social media altogether. Anger overwhelmed me. They were a trigger with no warning. I went through my own

trauma and was not prepared to read about others and feel the emotions all over again.

What seemed to make it worse was the vast difference between posts. People, whose version of sexual trauma was being catcalled while walking down the street, were posting in reply to people who have been hospitalized for sexual abuse.

I’m not saying that catcalling is in any way OK. It does classify as being sexul harrassment, and people need to be aware that the behavior is not acceptable, but rape and catcalling are not related and do not deserve to be shoved into the same category for a Facebook post.

Sexual assault and harassment, and the prevalence of them, need to addressed.

The fact that it makes people uncomfortable shows the need about which we can no longer be silent. But this movement is not the way; education is.

Congratulate yourself for making it through your difficulties with this issues, but don’t trigger others while doing so. Find pride in your own accomplishments, not in posting online.

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are changing colors and the air is getting colder. It’s finally fall. If you like a good pint of beer, that means one thing – it’s Oktoberfest. This time of year brings about two of my favorite seasonal beers.

The first is the Oktoberfest Lager, brewed by Frankenmuth Brewery. It has a nice copper color to it with a grain-like aroma. The flavor has hints of caramel on the front with an herbal, hoppy finish. This medium-bodied lager goes down smoothly and pairs nicely with hearty foods, like steak, pork or anything meaty. The thing that’s truly admirable about this beer is where it comes from.

Frankenmuth has a very rich German heritage and it plays a large role in the city’s identity, so it is only fitting that they make an Oktoberfest lager.

There are many other Oktoberfest lagers out there and you should try others to find which you like the most. I have not tried every fit-for-fall beer out there, but of the ones I have tried I can easily think of the ones I would recommend.

My other seasonal favorite is an unexpected one for me. One of the styles of beer I despise the most are pumpkin ales; there is just something about pumpkin

and beer that just doesn’t sit well with me. Southern Tier Brewing Company threw all of that out the window with Pumking. The Pumking beer has a beautiful orange-yellow color to it with a pronounced pumpkin smell.

It has a sweet pumpkin taste with hints of spices that are reminiscent of pumpkin pie, which is balanced well with the flavor of the hops. It is a medium-body beer with some warmth to it on the swallow.

Pumking is a great dessert beer for a chilly fall night. The taste of it reminds me of the fall nights when my mom would make a pumpkin pie, the scent of it baking in the air with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg and a nice, warming feeling just take me back to those times.

You can find both of these beers at Ideal Party Store in Bay City at 401 Salzburg Ave. and at 908 N. Johnson St. This is one of my favorite party stores in the area due to its wide selection of beer and friendly staff.

If you are new to craft beers I encourage you to keep an open mind; I have ruined beers for myself by thinking that I don’t like this style of beer or a certain kind of flavor note. With this mindset you will never fully appreciate what different beers have to offer. Make sure when you are out sampling beer that you are being safe and have a ride back home or somewhere to stay the night. Enjoy the season, and as always, drink responsibly.

Where we highlight the events of our president’s favorite pastime: tweeting.

Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows. But what he tweets can be very interesting to say the least. Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me

Oct. 23, President Trump tweeted about the conversation he had with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson after he lost his life fighting for our country. In the tweet, Trump is adamant with speaking Johnson’s name as soon as he started the conversation. Now, he can say whatever he wants to say about what went down with the phone call, and since it was not recorded, no one will really know what actually happened. Or will we?

Johnson’s widow Myeshia Johnson sat down for an interview with the Los Angeles Times and stated that Trump stumbled over pronouncing her husband’s name during his condolence call. Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida also heard the phone call and is backing the story of Johnson, stating that the tone and his statement were insensitive, which Trump claimed that Wilson fabricated the story.

Interesting enough, Trump took to Twitter the same day of Johnson’s interview to get his followers to think that this woman, who just lost her husband in a service to protect this country, was lying. Maybe if he would have taken the few seconds to know this soldier’s name he would not have needed to take to Twitter at all.

Honestly, if I do not put at least one tweet in here that

addresses fake news I do not think that I am doing my job. Again, most of these news organizations have been established before Trump was ever born. I also thought this was an interesting tweet because I, myself, was questioning where he got this statistic from? How do I, and every other person who follows Trump on Twitter, know that this is not fake news?

Also, as a side note, this tweet was in regards to Fox News. A few days after this tweet he had an interview featured on Fox News and was praising them, so talk about shady!

I almost laughed out loud at this tweet. Not because of the release of the JFK files but because of the sentence:

“In the end there will be great transparency.” This, coming from the man who is the king of being shady about all of his personal matters. Need an example?

Where are the tax forms that he kept claiming he would disclose once he became president?

I also have to question if he is deciding to disclose the JFK files, what else does Trump plan on disclosing to the public? Will information about Area 51 be released? Or what about top secret military plans? I honestly would not put it past him to release more information that has stayed behind closed doors for years, but this is all purely speculation on my part. For now. Only time can really tell.

Men’s basketball prepares for an epic season JOE THORNTON The Pioneers men’s basketball team won their first game Nov. 4 against Rochester University with a score of 114-88. When sitting down with basketball head coach Carlos McMath, he exhibited confidence and pride when talking with the Collegiate about this 2017-2018 team.

Q: What have you found out about your team this offseason?

A: The biggest thing I’ve found out is that they’re willing to compete. They’re going to work hard no matter what. Another thing I’ve found out is that we all love offense, not everyone loves defense yet, but my philosophy is defense first, and right now we are trying to mesh the two.

Q: What have you done this offseason to recover from the loss of nine players last season?

A: A lot of bonding, a lot of individual workouts, a lot of communication, a lot of really talking about life. You build relationships with these guys, and when they leave you’ve invested so much, but you have to be ready to invest just as much into the next crop of guys coming up.

Q: How are you getting prepared for your opening game?

A: The first game is a testing ground, and we play three seasons: preseason, regular season and postseason. Right now it’s about positioning ourselves to be able to play our best basketball possible when it really matters, in February and March.

Q: What phrase would you use to define the culture of Delta College basketball?

A: E.P.I.C. Every play is crucial.

Q: How are you looking to improve upon your record from last season?

A: For away games we’re changing up things while traveling. We’re also focusing on nutrition, getting ready mentally and physically. At the end of the day, we have to take this one game at a time and grow as a team.

Q: What makes this team different from past teams?

A: By far a lot more aggressive which makes us able to play fast-paced basketball. We have more reaction and less analyzing and speed in transitions up and down the court.

The Lady Pioneers will play in the DIII National Tournament Thursday, Nov. 9, where they will take on fifth-seeded Madison College of Wisconsin. Delta enters the tournament ranked second in the nation but seeded fourth in the tournament. Should Delta win that game they will advance to the semi-finals that take place the next day, Friday, Nov. 10. The championship match will take place Sunday, Nov. 12.

Q: What is the X factor on this team?

A: This may sound bad, but ignorance. Our ability to ignore and not worry what has happened in the past. Many of the guys don’t dwell on the things they can’t change. The records from the past don’t matter, and we stay in the moment. We’re all in for this ‘17-’18 season, all in for this moment..

Q: What do you want Delta to know about this team?

A: They have a lot of pride and love being Pioneers.

At the end of the day they want to put on a good show and have a nationally ranked team. It’ll be fun to watch and I know they’ll love to put on their evergreen and silver uniforms.
