Ricker Center hosts Hispanic Heritage Month panel: ‘Building our Future’

AUBRIE SMITH SAGINAW – Students, faculty and community members gathered in the Ricker Center Oct. 12 to discuss the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month. The goal was to educate community members about educational opportunities.

“I have a lot of students come in that don’t know where to go,” said Monica Hernandez-Alaniz, associate counselor. “If we can plant some seeds now, hopefully it will plant awareness and help our community.”

The panel was made up of Delta faculty, alumni and members of Delta’s Society of Hispanic Leaders “I think it’s extremely important [for] the Hispanic population to promote graduating from high school and graduating from college – not just attend, but graduate.

Tonight is about encouraging them to stay in school, do well and stay out of trouble,” said Elsa Olvera, director of Educational Opportunity Center.

The panel was made up of Delta faculty, alumni and members of Delta’s Society of Hispanic Leaders.

Jonathan Miller, dean of students, highlighted the importance of Delta celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

“One of the biggest principles at Delta is diversity, and so it’s very important in our work that we try to be as inclusive as possible, expose students to different cultures, different ways of thinking and different beliefs.

That’s part of the educational process,” said Miller.

The panel collectively expressed their hope in bringing awareness of Hispanic Heritage Month to the community and increasing the exposure in Delta’s halls.

“I think this is so important, because you can think back to when you were younger and how unsure you were about the future and education, and so it’s important to reach out to our community and give them

Olvera encourages students who may be facing difficulty with any aspect of receiving a quality education to seek help.

“If anybody needs any help to start off the process, come see the Educational Opportunity Center at Delta College, where we can help them complete their financial aid help them apply for college,” said Olvera.

Back to the Bay program spreads hope through ‘Hope Chests’ ADAM PRZESLAK BAY CITY - Colorfully painted shelves and filing cabinets, now called ‘hope chests’, have been appearing all over the Bay City area and surrounding communities. These hope chests often have positive quotes written on them, bright color schemes and the words ‘take what you need, give what you can.’

These hope chests are placed outside of business or residential homes and filled with goods that people in need might not be able to afford. Things such as toilet paper, feminine hygiene products and clothes for cold weather fill up parts of the chests.

While one part of the chest is usually dedicated to an abundant amount of food.

The Back to the Bay program’s goal is to promote giving back

to the people of the Bay City community. With no questions asked or any information required from people who take from their hope chests, they want to let people know that there is somebody who cares about them and what they’re going through.

Part of their mission statement, according to their website, is: “We can’t pay your rent, and we can’t keep your lights turned on.

But if you see a Hope Chest in a neighbor’s yard, you can rest assured you have a neighbor who cares.”

All sorts of nonperishable foods and goods can be donated at the various hope chests found throughout the city.

Recommended items to donate include canned items, boxed food, instant or microwavable food, diapers, baby wipes, socks

and gloves. The locations of the chests can also be found on their website, backtothebaymi. wordpress.com, along with a picture of the box so you can spot it and other requested or needed items.

The program has also begun venturing into the recent phenomena of ‘Little Free Libraries’, a national program that promotes the building of small libraries sometimes no bigger than a mailbox to encourage the exchange of free books. The idea allows people to get their hands on books who otherwise could not. Faculty furious about president’s policy change PASSport Program challenges

students to be involved on campus

JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – President of Delta College Jean Goodnow rewrote part of the Senate Policy, which can now create a way for faculty members to obtain promotions and tenure that is different from the established process. Through this rewrite, Goodnow has allegedly broken other senate policies as well.

Faculty members convened to discuss this issue at the monthly senate meeting Oct. 11. The Delta College Senate is a collective governance comprised of Delta College faculty, staff and students that provides communication on Delta-related issues.

The issue was highlighted during the public comments session at the board of trustees meeting Tuesday, Oct. 10.

English Professor Stuart Barbier read a statement on behalf of the faculty at Delta College. In the statement, Barbier announced that Goodnow’s newly written procedure “changes the Senate Policy in a way that raises the possibility of backroom deals and cronyism.”

At the October senate meeting, Goodnow defended her decision of the policy change by explaining how it can come to fruition.

“The situation began when faculty members went to their respective division chairs with a request to be added to this year’s promotion cycle. Several events transpired from the time of this request that resulted in the opportunity for parties involved to participate in a conflict resolution session,” says Goodnow.

“The intent was to address faculty concerns regarding the process. The faculty members, their division chairs, the dean of Teaching and Learning, the vice president of Instruction and Learning Services and the president participated.”

Associate professor of English Chey Davis questioned why the reorganization was necessary when other faculty members up for promotion received their information processes on time.

“Is this all really about reorganization, or is this about something different? It really appears to me that people are not telling the truth. If this is about our work rules and the president has the right to change absolutely anything at any time, does she get to tell me how many hours I work or need to be here because she has the right to change any of that policy? I do not feel safe,” says Davis.

Goodnow continued to defend the policy change by stating that it was a one-time change.

“Policy 3.010 was reviewed to ensure that the strategy did not violate policy and that the rigor of the criteria for promotion and/or tenure remained the same. After all participants of the conflict resolution session agreed to the parameters set forth as part of the one-time extension strategy, a meeting was held to review the proposed strategy to ensure there was not a violation of Senate Policy 3.010. I have made my decision with a broader interest of the college in mind,” says Goodnow.

The yearlong promotion process has a series of steps that are laid out in the Senate Handbook. Goodnow’s policy change will make it so that the review process will involve 12 faculty members reviewing the unnamed faculty member instead of the entirety of their division.

Goodnow refused to state the faculty member who was affected

in this policy change.

“My role and responsibility is to protect the college and the staff overall. I can’t always share all of the details of every situation, but I can assure you that I am doing this for the greater good. I intend to remain confidential on all aspects of this situation,” says Goodnow.

After Goodnow’s statement, faculty members were able to share their thoughts or ask questions about the policy’s possible effects on them. Barbier questioned Goodnow when the board of trustees approved the rewrite of Senate Policy 3.010, to which Goodnow responded that she did not change the policy. “[Goodnow] changed the policy. It specifically says that each division must approve the guidelines. The guidelines have been approved and are on file.

We are all harmed by the rewrite of the Senate Policy, especially when they are work rules. I am no longer able to rely on senate policy,” says Barbier.

At the closing of the assembly, English professor Karen Randolph resigned from being a member of the senate by stating: “I don’t have the time or energy to be involved in such a farce.”

Barbier intends to file a grievance on this issue within the coming weeks. He hopes that the outcome of the grievance is that the Senate Policy will be followed concerning anyone seeking a promotion, instead of the president’s substitution.

Once the grievance is filed, it will go to the Senate Board for review where it will be determined if the policy change will stay or be denied. According to Barbier, 15 faculty members have signed on to the planned grievance, and there are more considering it.

“I’m sure the president isn’t very happy about our planned grievance, but I hope she will understand that this is a grievance against her action, not her as a person. The president is doing what she thinks is best, but unfortunately, her chosen path is going against the Senate Policy,” says Barbier.

JOSEPH THORNTON UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Student and Civic Engagement office has recently initiated the new PASSport Program.

The PASSport Program is an incentive-based system to diversify student interests and get more people involved on campus.

Students are given a passport that needs seven stamps, one for each of the categories that the S.A.C.E office has divided their events into. Upon completion, you turn in your passport and are entered into a raffle to earn all kinds of prizes. The categories are as follows: • • • • • • •

Campus Life and Student Engagement coordinator Alison Ginter is trying to use the PASSport program to get students more involved on campus, at the PASSport program and what she hopes it does for the students at Delta.

“We have a lot of different activities that we do down in Student and Civic Engagement, and we’ve broken those activities into seven different categories.

We are really trying to get students to understand there is more than just campus life, more than just athletics. There are a lot of other different opportunities, and we are trying to show that off. We are more than just the ‘fun department.’” says Ginter.

Ginter believes that this program will helps students become more well-rounded.

“It is proven that students that are engaged on campus outside of the classroom and inside of the classroom are more successful. We want students to understand that there is so much more than just going to classes and to understand that

there are real benefits to doing things outside of the class, like getting involved in the clubs and organizations or a leadership program. It gets people excited.” says Ginter.

Prize winners will be decided at the end of the fall semester through a raffle with the grand prize being a $300 gift card to the bookstore. Other prizes included coupons to the Red Brix Cafeteria, T-shirts and more.

There is no limit on the amount of PASSports that each student can submit for a raffle entry.

Ginter sees civic engagement as a way for students to find their passion and discover more about themselves. ”Get engaged. Get engaged outside of the classroom and take more opportunities. Some students don’t exactly know what they want to do, so they could find their future career through the activities they involve themselves in.” says Ginter.

Board discusses Midland Center upgrade, learning outcomes assessments JESSICA SIEROCKI MIDLAND – The board of trustees convened Oct. 10 at the Delta College Midland Center.

Larry Ramseyer, director of facilities management, sought the approval of the board for the Midland Center upgrade project that totals roughly $12.5 million.

Classrooms as well as teaching labs will receive the most amount of money designation, totaling an estimated $4.09 million Since construction of the Midland Center in 1962, its electrical and mechanical systems have not been upgraded.

The board approved the plan as well as the other construction upgrades in the main campus K, P, A and M wings over the next five years.

Also on the agenda were revisions to Senate Policy 8.045

– student violations of college rules and regulations, which was postponed until November’s meeting in order for corrections to be made. Both the addition of technological support to Ellucian information technology and the revisions and removal of Senate Policy 1.100 league for innovation in the community college were approved.

At the dinner meeting before the board of trustees convened, faculty gave brief presentations.

Barb Handley-Miller, professor of communications, presented on the new assessments for learning outcomes in the classroom.

“This is a really positive example of collaborative work within different areas of the college,” says Handley-Miller.

Handley-Miller and her team are also evaluating different degree programs.

President Jean Goodnow is supportive of the idea and is anxious for the next steps in the process.

“A lot of people collaborated and a lot of people listened to one another and came up with a consensus. There are many areas of shared governance within Delta College, and this is a great example,” says Goodnow.

The next board of trustees meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Delta College Planetarium and Learning Center.

Unison Club strives to bring Delta students together

JESSICA SIEROCKI Are you looking for a group that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community? Unison Club has you covered. The Unison Club is a safe space for LGBTQ+ and allies to get things off their chest, see what other people are feeling, or discuss current events that impact the LGBTQ+ community.

Alison Ginter, Campus Life and Student Engagement coordinator, wants to provide students with a safe space at Delta’s inclusive campus.

“I think this makes people more aware and I think a lot of people in the community or allies need a safe space because there’s a lot of political forums and issues being brought light within the community,” says Ginter.

The club supports local community organizations as well as celebration days for the LGBTQ+ community such as National Coming Out Day. The club recently raised money for the Aids Run/Walk in Bay City and fundraise for LGBTQ+

homeless shelters located in the Detroit area.

Club president Kyla Everett believes that it is necessary to have a group on campus that celebrates everyone, no matter how a person identifies themselves.

“The only real requirement we have is that you’re open minded and either a part of the community or an ally. We’re just a very open and fun group.

Everett encourages students of all kinds to consider becoming part of the Unison family.

“No matter what your orientation is, Unison is for anyone and everyone. It’s just a place where everyone can hang out and enjoy being with likeminded people,” says Everett.

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Delta is hosting events throughout the month of October in recognition of domestic violence awareness. The month started with a student-engaging game called “Putting Intimate Partner Violence to an End” on Oct. 11.

Students were asked questions about domestic violence and had the chance to win a free T-shirt.

Loyce Brown, manager of Center for Organizational Success, played a role in putting the event together.

“The more students know about the subject, there will

hopefully be fewer opportunities for them to be in these types of situations. We’re looking to make sure students, Delta College and our community will be a safe place,” says Brown.

Brown wants to ensure that those experiencing life with domestic violence have a safe educational environment.

“We are probably dealing with students who are trying to go to college and are dealing with domestic violence. When people are facing domestic violence, they can’t focus on learning and growing as students. We want

Delta to be a safe environment for everyone,” says Brown.

Brown believes that educating students about domestic violence will be beneficial for everyone.

“The goal is to raise awareness of behaviors that are unhealthy or abusive that a lot of times people don’t recognize. We want to inform our students of what these behaviors are and know where to go to get help if they are experiencing them,” says Brown.

The Tombstone Project can also be seen throughout the month in the courtyard off the lower-west commons. The 46 tombstones represent women, children or men who passed away as a result of domestic violence.

JodiAnn Stevenson, associate professor of English, is behind the project this year. Stevenson believes that this project is an important part of bringing awareness to domestic violence awareness month.

“We need to raise awareness of the severity of domestic violence right in our own backyards. This awareness helps us become more compassionate and understanding of other people’s experiences, says Stevenson.

Stevenson says that it is important to show students who have experience domestic violence that they are not alone.

“People who are currently experiencing domestic violence may not think it’s a big deal or a threat to their lives but they need to understand how quickly violence can escalate. It’s important to seek help as quickly as possible,” says Stevenson.

To top off the month of awareness, Delta is hosting Kalimah Johnson, adjunct professor of social work. Johnson

is an advocate and counselor of sexual assault victims and will be speaking about domestic and sexual violence, healthy relationships and mental health.

Johnson will be speaking Oct. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. in N-007 on Delta’s main campus and again from 4-6 p.m. at the Delta College Ricker Center.

More than 20 colleges and universities attend Delta’s Transfer Articulation Fair

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Delta Transfer Articulation Fair brought in more than 20 colleges and universities to campus Oct. 12. The goal of the fair was for aspiring transfer students to find out about all the opportunities offered by colleges and universities in Michigan, and even some from out of state.

Some of the schools in attendance included: • Saginaw Valley State University • Ferris State University • Northwood University • Grand Valley State University • Central Michigan University Ferris State representative Kimberly Brandimore feels that transfer fairs are invaluable for students.

“Fairs like this show people how to use their Delta credits and maximize their outcomes

with those credits,” says Brandimore.

After surveying representatives from multiple colleges and universities, the most commonly asked question was, “Do my credits transfer?”

Many schools in attendance offered scholarship information and transfer credit equivalencies in anticipation of those questions.

Brandimore encourages students to stay determined on their path for higher education.

“Just keep going and ask as many questions as possible. It can be a very overwhelming and daunting task to figure out what you want to do with your life, but just keep pushing,” says Brandimore.

Delta student Yessica Lowrey came to the fair looking for additional information about three-plus-one programs and

was pleased with the variety that the transfer fair offered.

“Fairs like this help students to find out information about the schools they want to go to.

By coming here I found out that I’m going to need a special license before I can transfer and I enjoyed being able to talk to someone from the college face to face,” says Lowrey.

Transfer fairs can offer answers for prospective transfer students. Most of the colleges and universities in attendance had transfer equivalencies readily available to ensure attendees could immediately get something in their hands about transfer credits. Students looking to transfer that are looking for more information can visit the Transfer Center in room D-102 or call at 989-696-9330 to speak to a specific university’s representative.

The definitive guide to bringing down the house (show) JACK RECHSTEINER

For Friday the 13th, I drove out to the house of someone I didn’t know (and still don’t) to either see a few bands put on a show or get lost in the dark, rainy countryside. I wasn’t entirely sure.

With the rain, the night sky, the unfamiliar country roads of Mt. Pleasant and the fact that it was Friday the 13th – in October – the carload of people I was driving with kept half-jokingly, half-seriously saying that we were driving out to be extras in a Halloween slasher flick.

While we were on the lookout

for the driveway that belong to the address we had been given it occurred to me that some people might not have experienced this before or understand why I was driving out to some stranger’s house on a Friday night to see my friends put on a show in a garage.

House shows have been around for about as long as houses and music have existed together; hell, even Mozart threw house concerts. Folk, blues, punk, country, rock and hip hop all have deep histories in the art of putting on performances in people’s homes and backyards.

So, everything from 16thcentury classical to South Bronx rap has its roots in small, doit-yourself spaces. The power of community makes anything possible in the world of DIY. “Small DIY shows like this are important. It provides an easier outlet for bands to play to

their fans. House shows are more accessible, inclusive, respectful and they’re cheaper. It’s an allaround good time for everyone,” says Ryan Malisci, house show attendee and guitarist for Hot Mulligan.

In this era of Lollapaloozastyle festivals and concert arenas, the humble house show seems to have fallen from favor. The razzle and dazzle of arenas, theaters and clubs look promising, the actual support they give to artists is more limited now than it ever has been. Booking agents that are more concerned with their bottom line than a good lineup, small percentages of profits paid to bands even when they have high show attendance and expensive ticket prices for music fans that want to go to shows has turned the “professional” world of music into an industry that supports very few people.

the do-it-yourself scene is a more realistic version of the music industry. Fans get to really experience artists and music and performers get to truly connect with their fans; not to mention the proceeds of the show usually go more to the actual musicians instead of venue staff and other middlemen. That’s why people are throwing shows in

basements, garages, backyards, barns – anywhere where the volume can be cranked up and people can get together. House shows are set up by fans and artists for other fans and artists.

That means shows for you put on by people like you.

Lacina and Truax host Beyond Words JACK RECHSTEINER UNIVERCITY CENTER To truly live something is to experience something that is beyond words yet we try to put it into words anyways.

That was, at least, the recurring theme for the Beyond Words literary gathering that was held in the Delta Library Sept.

12. Ray Lacina and Tina Truax partnered as hosts for this panel featuring both of their recently published books. Lacina first heard Truax read at an English division retreat and since then they have been friends coaching each other through the writing and publishing process.

Lacina is an English professor at Delta College and also a little bit of a Ryan Gosling lookalike, according to the presentation he gave on his most recent novel “Visle War.” Throughout his career, Lacina has returned again and again to his love for writing fiction.

“One of the best things I did when I was head of the English department was hiring Ray, along with a few others, who went on to do so much more

than I ever imagined,” says attendee Larry Levy.

Lacina says he accidentally wandered into writing, which he jokingly says has nothing to do with him reading fantasy books and playing Dungeons and Dragons as a kid instead of playing sports. He remembers specifically getting a box set of H. G. Wells books for his tenth Christmas and that there was something in them that spoke to him about a world beyond ours.

Shortly after this is when Lacina started seeing himself as a writer.

“It was the power of the fantastic to tell the story of the truth,” says Lacina.

Visle War is a historical cross-over fantasy novel centered around a French knight and an Assyrian commander during the Crusades. Lacina independently published the book on Amazon to cut out the middleman of publishing companies, because if any amount of people read it, that’s something amazing in Lacina’s eyes. Lacina lived in Saudi Arabia for a number of years and read “The Crusades

Through Arab Eyes,” which was when all the pieces of the story came together for Visle War. “It was less of a religious history and discussed more of the realities that were happening in the world. If there’s something to take away from it, it’s that these people didn’t come to immediately understand each other’s beliefs but they connected on a deeper level as human beings,” says Lacina.

SAGINAW - Brad DeRoche, associate professor of music at Delta College, spoke at the second installment of Where We Live Wednesday, Oct. 11 at the Saginaw Art Museum. DeRoche gave a lecture on Lefty Frizzell, a singer and songwriter who made an impact on the Saginaw Community.

The last installment of this eight part lecture series was hosted by Delta College’s associate professor of art Andrew Reider. Reider explained to attendees the making behind the mural Where We Live that he created with two Delta students.

by Larry Levy.

“After a few weeks of class, Tina shared a draft of her writing with me. I remember vividly things in there that are now word for word in the book. I encouraged her to pursue it because in life your best subjects choose you,” says Levy.

Goosebumps appeared on rapt audience members as they listened to the chapter detailing Truax’s pregnancy caused by rape and the difficult path of deciding to get an abortion.

Truax ends the reading in tears while the room fills with applause.

“I may cry, but I’m connecting with myself, and with you, I hope. That’s the power of nonfiction,” says Truax.

Pumpkin carving can be exciting, but make sure to avoid common mistakes.

When cutting into your pumpkin, slice on an angle to ensure that your top won't fall through when you go to replace it.

Another reason for a rotting pumpkin is dehydration.

If you plan on lighting up your jack-o-lantern with a candle, sprinkle some cinnamon on the inside of the top. Light up your candle and smell the makings of a pumpkin pie.

Use an ice cream scoop Your hands and a bucket can only go so far for scooping out pumpkin guts. Grab an ice cream scoop and dig in deep. Make sure you get all the goop and gunk to ensure that your pumpkin doesn’t produce mold.

Twisted tales of Tri-Cities terror JACK RECHSTEINER

All Hallows’ Eve, Samhain, Devil’s Night, Halloween.

Whatever you call it, we are in the spookiest season of the year and all the things that come along with it – costume parties, scary movies, pumpkin carving, bonfires and generally witchy or mischievous things. To help you get prepared this horrorshow of a holiday, the Delta Collegiate is bringing you some of the local legends from the Tri-Cities so you have terrifying tales to tell your friends who may be... in the dark.

Meijer Hill People say that while you’re driving at night down Wheeler Road eastward, you can see car lights coming toward you that will then instantly vanish. Rumor has it, this is because back in the 1980s a man living just outside of Midland murdered his whole family with no motive. He left his 14-year-old son in the basement chained to the wall and floor,

he killed his wife with a blow to the head and left her in the attic wrapped in a white bed sheet and he killed his 1-yearold daughter in the bathroom before hurriedly escaping from the horrific scene in his car.

The house has since been burnt down by locals who did not want those sad souls to be stuck there, but people who have visited the remains claim they still hear the sound of chains coming from the basement and have nearly been run off the road by the ghostly headlights of the man forever trying to flee from the crimes he committed.

Saginaw Art Museum The Saginaw Art Museum opened its doors in 1948 to the public, but it had a long history before opening up as an art institution. Clark Lombard Ring was a young boy when his father was transferred to Saginaw from Ohio to manage lumber operations in the

Saginaw Valley. Following his father's death in 1896, C. L. Ring inherited the family's home at 1126 N. Michigan Ave. and continued to live there with his wife Lizzie until their deaths inside the home. Both Clark and his father died in the same second-story room, allegedly.

Shortly thereafter, two of Clark’s surviving children donated the family home to become the Saginaw Art Museum. Various employees of the museum have reported strange occurrences while no patrons have been inside. Claims vary from reports of heavy breathing, unseen figures bumping into staff in hallways, ghostly voices, footsteps coming from rooms with no one in them and the eerie sensation of being watched.

One of the museum’s more noticeable occurrences is a ghost that likes to bang away on the keys of a typewriter in an upstairs office, while another has been known to throw books at patrons and workers.

Kneeling can only last so long JOE THORNTON When I press the power button on my TV to embark on a Sunday full of NFL football I don’t expect much.

I know that games will be played, some of which will be blowouts while others will be close. I expect to see respect from both teams and between all players, competing for the common love of the sport. I expect to see a competition in which everyone puts their all into the game. I never expected to see such large percentages of players taking a knee and not participating in the national anthem prior to performing in their game.

It all started with Colin Kaepernick, taking a knee to bring awareness to the injustices done to AfricanAmericans and minorities after many instances of police brutality in 2016. He has every right as a player and a United States citizen to peacefully protest; however, this recent spike in the amount of players taking a knee doesn’t seem to be about that at all. The inspiration behind these athletes taking a knee lately is President Donald Trump’s comments on Kaepernick and other National Football League players, saying they should be fired for not participating in the anthem. In response, many more players kneeled during the “Star-Spangled Banner” to show Trump they were united and had every right to protest.

How do I feel about all of this? I was raised in a home with two parents that met in the Marines, one being

African-American with the other being Caucasian. Many people watching at home see these as men as just football players; they practice and they play, win or lose, but we don’t get a glimpse into their lives. None of us takes the time to do the research and see where they’ve grown up or the experiences they’ve gone through. These players kneeling have had to overcome great odds to be where they are now, but are still profiled as a “high threat” to law enforcement officials. These players all choose to take a knee because the flag represents America, and they don’t like the state America is in currently, especially under Trump’s presidency.

The athletes you see on the field are expressing their First Amendment right to free speech in a peaceful way. They’re disrespecting the flag just as much as you are when you put on your favorite star-spangled socks, stepping all over the flag you claim to love. The anthem and flag may be important to America, but my parents fought for this country to preserve its ideals, the most important of which being the right to free speech.

We should all unite to realize the social injustices that are being done in the process of profiling minorities.

The act of kneeling is meant to be noticed. If you’re reading this, that means the protest has worked up to this point. This action isn’t NFL players trying to disrespect veterans, and I’m sure many of the players praise military

Dating depression and anxiety: The relationship killer AUBRIE SMITH

Let me be perfectly clear here: Depression and anxiety change people. I have seen Kevin go through good days, bad days and awful days. I have tried to love him through every single one of them, but often I wonder if I’m strong enough to give him my 100 percent; I hope that every day I grow stronger so that I can.

Sure, some days it’s easier than others, but what happens when his bad couple of days turn into a bad couple of months? With medication and therapy, there’s no guarantee that things will turn around for him permanently, and that was hard for me to digest.

It’s not that I don’t understand mental health issues or understand that he and I need different things physically and emotionally because of his

disorders, but when he fights with his mental health, he also fights with mine.

When you date someone with depression and anxiety, you date someone who is struggling to give themselves what they need – how do you expect them to give you what you need? This is the hardest thing.

When you plan a life with someone, build a home with them and intend to struggle with them through it, you have a constant fight between whose needs come first that day. One thing is certain: You, your partner, anxiety and depression are almost never on the same page at the same time.

Don’t forget about your own mental health. Stress can be overwhelming. Find your own ways of coping and releasing feel-good chemicals. Go to the gym, take a bath, spend more time reading or with friends.

Find a way that you can decrease your own worries without your significant other for your own health.

Come up with compromises.

Be honest when things get tough. You can’t be strong enough for both of you all the time, so let them know when you need some space to yourself or a stress-free night; they’ll be more understanding than you think. A “pause” button is possible.

Never forget your goals. I am the absolute worst at seeing the bigger picture – sometimes I pick fights over iced coffee because I’m mad about something that happened three weeks ago. Taking a minute to breathe can be relationshipsaving. Always remember that if the love is worth it, the choices are simple. Life is short, and every moment should be treasured.

I choose Kevin every single day, and I plan to, as long as he’ll have me and our iced coffee fights. I choose him, depression and anxiety, and some days are an absolute struggle; but every single day is worth it.

My question is what comes next? Now that the populace is aware of the issues at hand, I want to know what athletes will do. To the NFL players who have millions of dollars, this can’t be the end, can it?

You can’t expect to take a knee so long that the bloodshed suddenly stops in the streets, can you?

You’ve brought attention to the issues, and many African-Americans, myself included, are grateful for that. Now I want to know how you plan on making a difference. You have the stage, the funds and the influence to make a change; a change much larger than planting your patella into the turf while someone sings our revered anthem. You can do more than most citizens could, but will you?

Your protest breeds attention, but if you don’t do something with that attention more bloodshed will occur and we’ll have another slow cycle of change on our hands. Turn the attention into an acceleration of the solution, because you can kneel all season long, but all you’ll be changing is the number of grass stains on your uniform.

Well, on Oct. 8 and then on Oct. 9, President Trump tweeted about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the Colts game because players kneeled at the beginning of the game. So, basically, Mike Pence was a paid protestor. According to Sports Illustrated, Pence’s traveling press

Coming Out Day’ is a scam

How did I come out? Good question, but can I ask you the same thing, kind heterosexual?

When did you tell your family and friends that you were straight?

How did they react? Did you feel relieved? Were they OK with it?

What most of our cisgender and heterosexual counterparts don’t understand is that not everyone has to come out.

Sexuality and gender identity are not burdens that we LGBTQ+ members must repress until the “right moment.” No, we have always known who we are, so relaying that information to others does in no way validate our

identities.

Rather, the very notion that this is mandatory constructs a mindset that whom we prefer to screw or how we present ourselves is indicative of how forthcoming we are.

The problem is not that there is a day dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community but the fact that is solely one day. Yes, there are others sprinkled throughout the year, and even an entire month dedicated to the community, but why can’t we celebrate accepting ourselves every day of the week?

Really, what makes us different from heterosexuals who can feel comfortable being themselves every single day? We all want the same things: to love ourselves, to find love with someone else and to

reporters stayed in vans outside the stadium after they were told Pence wouldn’t be in there that long.

This was a premeditated act that cost the taxpayers. Sports Illustrated calculated the entire “trip” as costing $242,000. What do you think this money could have benefited besides making a point?

And honestly, what did they think would happen

during a game against the San Francisco 49ers, which was Colin Kaepernick’s team, otherwise known as the man who started the movement? This was a super shady deal between the president

and vice president. Don’t they have actual work to do that will benefit American citizens instead of wastefully spending our hardearned money? Disgusting.

Oct. 13, President Trump tweeted about the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. In the tweet he claimed, “In

America, we don’t worship government - we worship God.” OK, so let’s talk about this for a second. I am Catholic and I believe in God and heaven wholeheartedly, but I have a problem with this statement.

There is such a thing called separation of church and state.

Has Trump ever heard of that before?

Now, this doesn’t mean that Americans shouldn’t stop believing in God if that’s part of their belief system, but Americans are from different backgrounds, ethnicities and religious beliefs. There are Americans who don’t believe in God and others who worship different deities, but they’re still Americans living in America.

Here, we are a melting pot, which is one of the uniquest things about America, so let’s try to be a little more inclusive about everyone’s belief system, hm?

We are now in an age that people are more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community so there’s less of a need to formally come out of the closet. You can just be who you want to be without a problem. *GASP* Sounds crazy right?

If anyone feels the need to tell their close friends and family members that they’re trans, gay, bisexual, pansexual, aesexual or whatever it may be, they should definitely go for it. Maybe that will allow others to be more aware about LGBTQ+ issues. But if a person prefers not to tell anyone, simply don’t. Your identity is yours to keep, therefore you are in control of who you want to be.

We need to make “Coming Out Day” every day. Love yourself, show off your pride and stop giving a shit what other people think about you. We’re all perfect in our own way, and we do not need a special day to remind us of that.

Collegiate Tries It: Jack gives staff tarot card readings

Have you ever wondered what answers lie beyond this world? Members of our open-minded staff convened at Harless & Hugh coffee shop and took to Jack Rechsteiner and his tarot cards to answer questions that we have had on our minds.

Tylla Hahn - “What do I need to know right now?”

With the present draw of the priestess, which represents vitality and life, and and the chariot showing having control over her future, Jack’s recommendation to Tylla to to maintain the control of her future. Tylla needs to use her new experiences to help reshape her outlook on certain views and focus her energy to move in the direction she needs to be.

Jessica Sierocki - “Will I have my dream career?”

Jessica got the queen of wands in her present state which represents maturity. She has taken what she has learned in the past and applied it to her current position.

Regardless of splitting the deck at the worry card, she needs to continue to hold her ground and possibly change some rules in the game in order to be successful.

Not allowing others to get in her way is a key way for her to get to her dream career.

Kellen MacGregor - “What is going on with my love life?”

Kellen is halfway to where he needs to be to find his forever love. With the six of swords showing his present is a state of transformation and three of cups paving the way of Kellen’s future with emotions and intuition, Kellen is moving along with his discovery of “the one.”

As for an extra good sign? Kellen split the tarot card

deck at the lover’s card, a sign from his subconscious that he’s ready to be on the prowl for love. Oh lá l á.

Joe Thornton - “Am I on the right path to success?”

The nine of wands in Joe’s present state shows his willpower has allowed him to be secure in his current standings. The eight of disks for his future shows tactful and mindful decisions but Joe needs to make sure that his emotions will not lead his astray from his path. Jack’s suggestion is to take his current strength and follow it with passion but in a controlled way where he will not get burnt out. Joe’s path is not a sprint but rather a marathon.

Aubrie Smith - “Will my current relationship last?”

Aubrie was also given the queen of wands as her present card. The cards show that in the past, there were emotions that were managed incorrectly which led to her taking charge of love life. Jack’s recommendation is to meet in middle to make decisions that will make everyone happy. Aubrie’s bottom card when she split the deck was the prince of wands which proves that the love in her life is a perfect balance for her.

Alas, the rest of our staff was not able to be physically present for our little rendezvous of getting answers from the great beyond but were with us in spirit.

Fantasy Football Watch: Sell high on Ezekiel Elliott ADAM PRZESLAK Dallas Cowboys’ second year running back, Ezekiel Elliott, was originally suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for six games in August because of ongoing domestic violence allegations. Soon after, suspension was taken to court when the player’s union got involved and the suspension became, well, suspended.

Elliott played the first five games of the regular season before the suspension would rear its head. Before the Cowboy’s sixth game, a U.S. court of appeals reinstated Elliott’s suspension. That didn’t last too long though, as the courtroom fiasco ensued and a temporary

restraining order was placed allowing Elliot to once again suspend his suspension. Now league representatives are set to appear in front of a court on Oct. 30 to, once again, discuss Elliott’s suspended suspension.

Suspenseful isn’t it?

Joking aside, this does allow Elliott to play at least one more game from now until his Oct. 30 court date. If Tom Brady’s deflategate suspension taught us anything it is that, no matter how famous or well liked of an athlete you are, nobody is safe from the wrath of Goodell’s suspensions.

zero backing to it and Zeke’s case actually has some credit to it, unlike Brady’s.

I can’t predict the future, but things don’t look good for Elliott, in my opinion. Following the Oct. 29 game against the Redskins, if he were to be

slapped with the looming six game suspension, we wouldn’t get another glimpse at Zeke until Dec. 17. That gives him three more regular season games, which would be about the time of the fantasy football playoffs.

With the suspension conundrum not looking too sweet for Elliott and the Cowboys I’d recommend a quick trade by the end of the week.

You want to sell high on Elliott.

Get all you can for him before he offers you nothing but a goose egg and a wasted roster spot for six weeks.

I’d try and swap him for something your team is in desperate need of. For those of

you who believe Elliott is the adhesive of your team, because he’s you’re only good player, if you’re willing to gamble a little bit, I’d attempt a blockbuster trade with another team in your league. Try trading him away for a couple solid flex position players or maybe a middle-ofthe-road quarterback and a couple skill position players.

If you’re the ultimate gambler just sit back and watch, I suppose. It is possible Zeke could play every remaining game of the season, but with two postponed suspensions already, I don’t see a third one incoming and Goodell’s swift justice will probably soon be felt.

Associate Professor Renée Hoppe to play for U.S. in World Ringette Championships ADAM PRZESLAK

On Nov. 27 teams from around the world will travel to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada to take part in the 2017 World Ringette Championships. The sport is largely dominated by women and is wildly popular in Canada where, similar to the NHL, they have a National Ringette League.

Ringette is a winter sport very similar to hockey except the blade of the hockey stick is removed and the puck is replaced with a ring. The game features the same amount of players, the same rink, and most of the same rules as ice hockey. One major difference, though, is that players cannot carry the ring over the blue lines like a hockey player would a puck. A ringette player can only get the ring over the first and second blue lines through passes. This rule changes makes offensive fast breaks extremely difficult when compared to hockey.

The United States ringette team will feature one of Delta’s faculty, Associate Professor of Lifelong Health and Wellness Renée Hoppe. Hoppe was a softball standout at Valley Lutheran High before playing for Delta’s Lady Pioneers in 1999. She then transferred to Central Michigan where she played rugby. Once her collegiate athletics were finished Hoppe decided to move onto the ice.

“Any time I could get on ice I always loved it. My husband was always a hockey player so he began training me,” Hoppe said.

She became very good at a sport she picked up in college that most athletes have to begin training for at birth. She began regularly participating in area leagues and soon found her way into playing in three hockey leagues, one of which she recently broke her kneecap in.

Hoppe is coming off a kneecap injury she suffered earlier this year playing in a high-tier hockey league in which she is the only female participant.

“I broke my kneecap in March 2017,” Hoppe said, “Sometimes you’d think people would be nicer to you [being the only female] but, in fact, sometimes you almost have a bullseye on your back.”

The hockey league in which her knee cap got broke, thanks to a hard slam into the boards, is only one of the three hockey leagues Hoppe participates in. She also plays ringette at least once a week often with other US ringette team standouts. In January 2017 she began training more for ringette than hockey and trying out for the national team. Her efforts were rewarded with an invite to the final selection camp for the US ringette team, held in Philadelphia, in July.

Fresh out of a brace that had been placed on her knee in March she was unsure if she could even compete in Philly.

“At that point I decided, basically two weeks before the camp, I’ve already made the camp and I’m going to do this even if my knee was still recovering,” Hoppe said.

While in Philly, Hoppe made enough of an impression on the coaches of the national team to be named to the final roster. During the first weekend of October, Hoppe would get some ice time with her teammates from around the nation for the first time since the selection camp. This time, however, they’d be competing against various Canadian ringette teams in Canada’s AAA U19 instead of against each other.

The team won, lost, and tied during the trip through Canada but would come out acting as a well-oiledmachine. The team is gearing up for the World Ringette Championships coming up in late November and early December where they will meet teams from countries such as Canada, Sweden and Czech Republic.

There are various ice rinks available in the Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland communities with drop-in times for ringette players as the sport continues to grow locally.

Third-ranked Delta named Region 12 Champions, dominate Cincinnati on sophomore night

UNIVERSITY CENTER – The Cincinnati State Surge came to the homefield of the Lady Pioneers Oct. 18. The Surge would give it their all but ultimately would fall short 6-0 to the powerful Delta squad on the Lady Pioneer’s sophomore night.

Six minutes into the game Delta midfielder and sophomore Madison Tweddle put the first score on the board. It would be the first of many for the Lady Pioneers and the first of two for Tweddle. Fellow sophomore Paige Renshaw would score next in the 25-minute mark.

Then, with the first half nearly wrapped up, freshman Skylar Eckert scored her 14th goal of the season to put Delta up 3-0. Thirty seconds later it was Tweddle again, shining on sophomore night, with her second goal of the half. Heading into the

intermission Delta had a solid 4-0 grasp on the lead.

There was no easing up on the throttle for the Lady Pioneers as the squad would post two more goals before time expired giving them the 6-0 victory. One goal was booted in by Taylor Farrand, a sophomore Pioneer with nine goals on the season.

The final goal came from freshman Lindsey Muller, this was her fourth of the season.

Delta finishes the regular season with a strong overall record of 121-1 and went 8-1-1 in conference play. With this win the Lady Pioneers were crowned NJCAA Region 12 champions are now entering postseason play. The most recent polls feature Delta as the third best team in the nation.
