Humanities Learning Center features first brown-bag lunch JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – Have you ever thought about being a neuroscientist for a day?

Professor of psychology Nancy Hartshorne spoke Sept. 4 on her experience working at a brain lab during her sabbatical at Central Michigan University.

Hartshorne worked in a lab with rats during her sabbatical.

Hartshorne’s background is in education and counseling, so she was never exposed to basic research involving rats and other animals.

“I thought it would really interesting to go back and see some of that basic research firsthand. When I went into this class, I had no knowledge of anything. At times it was tough to understand but it was also really great,” says Hartshorne.

As part of her experience, Hartshorne performed special tasks to extract brains from test

subjects in order to conduct research with the other lab assistants.

History professor Christina Szilagyi will be discussing ancient aliens and the troubling popularity of alternative history from the popular television show on the History Channel. “[Szilagyi] writes a blog where she debunks ancient aliens, so it’s kind of a fun to look at if aliens really exist.

She also looks at what history the people from National Geographic are actually talking about,” says French.

Hartshorne’s presentation was hosted by the Humanities Learning Center as part of their brown-bag series talk. The brown-bag series is something that Amy French, Humanities Learning Center coordinator, tries to do at least five times in an academic year.

UNIVERSITY CENTER – From makeshift Van de Graaff generators to a piano whose keys consisted of bananas, the fifth annual Dow Great Lakes Bay STEM Festival garnered hundreds of visitors and succeeded in entertaining all attendees eager to delve into science and its numerous, diverse fields.

This year’s STEM – which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics – Festival was organized by the triad of the Dow Chemical Company, Delta College and the nationally renown Mind Trekkers from Michigan Technological University.

Oct. 6 was designated as the day wherein students came via field trips to observe and participate in the fest, though the event became open to the public Oct. 7, operating from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Attendees ranging from various backgrounds, ages and interests filled Delta’s hallways and the Pioneer Gym, ready to learn about STEM

careers, participate in scientific experiments and partake in fun activities relating to STEM. Leane Priest of Hemlock visited the festival with her children, who attend Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy.

“We have many things comparable to what this event offers embedded into our curriculum,” admitted Priest.

“Though they’re all videobased, conducting scientific experiments at home isn’t the same as doing them here, especially with people who work in STEM fields.”

Several Delta instructors attended STEM Festival to educate passers-by and participants alike on the fields about which they teach. Andrea Bair, geology professor, was pleased with this year’s turnout.

“We’ve exposed a lot of families and kids to the ‘fun’ of STEM, which is something they might not be introduced to otherwise,” said Bair.

Andrea Bair’s booth displayed the importance of dams and roadside ditches, both of

which are often overlooked for their significance to the environment and geology in general. The “stream table,” a lopsided platform with flowing water trickling down sediments to demonstrate the uneven, downhill course of water, was a crowd-pleaser, though its use extends beyond the STEM Fest.

“This ‘stream table’ is put to use in the classroom and at outreach events,” said Robin van De Veer, professor of geography.

“It’s an extremely useful tool education-wise.”

What made this STEM Fest a success was not its elaborate booths – though this was undoubtedly a contributing factor – but rather its inclusivity, passion and excitement that provided aspiring STEM professionals with the tools necessary to begin the long trek toward scientific greatness. After all, the youngsters and young adults who participated will be the world’s newest researchers, scientists and inventors who collectively aim to make earth a better, smarter place.

Professors bring addiction awareness to Delta AUBRIE SMITH

P

rofessors Lori Ziolkowski and Betheen Glady-Teschendorf have come together to bring addiction awareness to Delta’s campus.

Through posters, events and personal testimonies, the duo have one goal: to lessen the stigma around addiction by opening up the possibility for more individuals to seek treatment.

“We decided that this tragedy

had to have a voice and that we shouldn’t be silent anymore on campus,” says Ziolkowski.

“We decided to stop the stigma and show that addiction affects everybody’s life – it doesn’t discriminate” Locally produced “Stigmatic: Our Opioid Crisis,” a documentary about Bay City’s heroin epidemic, will be shown at Delta’s main campus Oct. 10. The film’s director and

producer, former Delta students, will be present for a discussion following the film.

“It doesn’t discriminate, and if you think it won’t happen to your family, you’re wrong,” says Ziolkowski.

The professors hope to bring information to a topic that most people shy away from. “It’s a national tragedy, and no one has a grip on it. It’s not getting better, it’s getting worse,” says Ziolkowski.

Come November, the two will be introducing a new branch of Families Against Narcotics, with meetings held monthly on Delta’s campus. The group will feature a variety of speakers based off the needs of the community.

Ziolkowski reminds those who know someone struggling that Narcan can be purchased without prescription at some chain drugstores. “It’s a small price to pay for saving a life,” says Ziolkowski. “I would live in a cardboard box if it meant saving my child.”

Sept. 21, 2017

Delta College Public Safety took a complaint of a stolen wallet from a student. The student accidently left their wallet in a restroom. When they went back to retrieve it, it was gone. The wallet was later recovered at Saginaw Valley State University.

Credit cards were missing from the wallet. The victim reports that there was some unauthorized activity on one of the cards.

Sept. 27, 2017

Delta College Public Safety received a report of items stolen from a faculty member’s office. The faculty member reports that items were taken between Sept. 14 and Sept. 18. Electronic items, including a wireless keyboard and mouse and a Google Nexus were taken.

Sept. 28, 2017

Delta College Public Safety investigated damage to a student’s vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the G Lot between 9-11:30 a.m. Sept. 28. The student discovered scratches to the rear driver’s side quarter panel of their vehicle. It is unknown at this time how the damage occurred. It is still undetermined whether the damage was intentional.

Delta College Public Safety responded to three traffic crashes during this time frame and 11 medical or injury reports.

Populace Coffee gears up to open downtown Bay City location JACK RECHSTEINER “Drink coffee and you can live forever.”

At least that’s what Populace Coffee’s tongue-in-cheek motto promises its coffee-loving patrons. Sept. 30 owners Andrew Heppner and Dave Daniele offered eager eyes the first chance to see the renovations they’ve made to the downtown Bay City building that has housed many other local coffee shops and roasters before them.

Heppner and Daniele worked the cool, sleek coffee bar of the new Populace Department of Bay City from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. offering visitors free drip coffee, espresso and cappuccinos.

“It’s been nice seeing people experience the space after all the work we put into it. We wanted to have people take the time to come in and visit us. We wanted to introduce ourselves to the community. We also wanted to give away as much free coffee as possible,” says Daniele.

The soft preview coincided with this weekend’s festivities with Hell’s Half Mile and the MI Made Marketplace street vendors. A combination of the amount of people in the downtown area along with the excitement of the new coffee shop saw over 100 people visiting the soft opening of the location.

While it was not necessarily a planned timing, it wasn’t entirely accidental either.

“We were getting close to finishing up. We got to a point where Hell’s Half Mile was coming up, and it’d be great to have a preview day, so that became our goal, our deadline: Push ourselves to have a softopening day during the festival before we open on Oct. 9,” says Daniele.

The Populace Department of Bay City will be officially opening Monday, Oct. 9 and will be open Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.,

and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The location will feature an emphasis on quickly brewed, consistently good coffees and espresso drinks made from their flagship roaster, which is located just down the street from the coffee shop. Once open, pastries will also be provided locally from Petit Four Pastry in Essexville.

“I was here earlier; this is my second time here today. Yeah, it’s the place to be,” says Populace patron Drew Schmidt.

The building, located at 810 Saginaw St. in the heart of downtown Bay City, was most recently known as Brewtopia until the Populace team purchased the space in May of 2017. The space is sparsely but comfortably furnished a la mid-century modern featuring a color palette of blacks, whites and natural woods.

The space should feel familiar but revitalized for any patrons who have passed through the

hallowed doors of this building before. The Populace team put in a considerable amount of work to bring the building in line with their vision for the space while retaining the personality that drew them to the building in the first place.

“I didn’t want to see this space

specifically not be a coffee shop.

This building has just been part of the fabric for the community for so long. Everybody that’s been in this building has been in here roasting, so it made sense for us to come in and give it life again,” says Heppner.

In 2013, we learned our only child was addicted to heroin.

Amanda was 18 and had just completed her freshman year at Delta. We did all the “right” things: She was raised in a loving two-parent household, I took her to school every day, I never missed a game and spent most weekends at her volleyball tournaments. Amanda was an honors student in high school, scored a 27 on her ACT, was ranked second in the county for volleyball and had a close circle of good friends. How could a smart, compassionate, beautiful girl get here?

There are many paths to addiction, and it does not discriminate. For some, it starts with prescription drugs taken after surgery. For others, they see family or friends using and therefore have easy access.

For our daughter, addiction began with “normal” teenage experimentation with alcohol and marijuana; she told me the

first time she smoked pot was the best feeling she ever had.

She progressed to prescription drugs: A friend’s Adderall to help her study for a test, some of Grandma’s Vicodin for fun or some Molly at music festivals.

She eventually began to inject heroin, because nothing else could get her high.

There is tremendous stigma that comes with addiction.

For the first two years of this journey, I was too afraid to speak out because of the judgement that would surely arise about my parenting ability and our daughter’s lack of character.

number continues to rise. I can no longer be silent in the face of this epidemic and have chosen to share without shame to help reduce the stigma about this devastating disease. I am proud of the leadership Delta College continues to show in the face of this national tragedy. Delta has provided a variety of programing through its Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program committee, hosted multiple heroin summits and Saginaw Opiate Reduction Task Force meetings, and beginning in November, there will be monthly Families Against Narcotics meetings. These will provide a public forum for community members to get support, information and to propose solutions to end this deadly epidemic.

We have always been proud of our daughter, but I am proudest of the hard work she has done to get her life back. After three trips to rehab, two years in sober living and attending countless Narcotics Anonymous meetings, she is now 19 months in recovery. For the first time in four years, she has health, hope, and joy – and so do we.

Many think addiction is a personal weakness or a moral failing, and I am ashamed to admit that I initially believed that, until I became educated about the changes in the brain that occur when a person with a genetic predisposition uses alcohol or drugs. Choice quickly turns to an inability to stop, and the urge to use drugs becomes a person’s primary need. It becomes more important than their family, friends, job, reputation, health and even their life.

Today 144 people will die of an opiate overdose, and that

Keith Edwards enlightens students on rape culture JESSICA SIEROCKI

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Keith Edwards, expert on sexual violence prevention, men’s identity and social justice education, visited Delta College Sept. 26 as the first speaker of the 19th annual President’s Speaker Series.

Edwards also spoke to an audience about the need to end rape culture and how men need to be involved in this process as much as possible.

“For the past 40 years, in order to understand, recognize, address and prevent sexual violence we owe a great debt of gratitude to women’s groups and organizations. We talk about sexual violence as a women’s issue because we know sexual violence happens to women. It also happens to men, transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.

“I would argue that that we need to shift our thinking about sexual violence as a men’s issue.

Men need to be involved in creating a community where sexual violence doesn’t exist,” says Edwards.

According to Edwards, 1 in 4 college women have or will have experienced sexual violence in their life, and of those women, 84 percent of them know their attackers. Edwards gave advice about how to react when a survivor of sexual violence approaches someone for help.

“The first thing you want to do is make sure that they’re physically safe and uninjured.

The next thing is to just believe them. Constantly tell them that what happened was not their fault,” says Edwards.

“Our culture victim-blames survivors of sexual assault, and usually the first person to blame for what they’ve experienced is the survivor themselves. No one is responsible for the sexual violence that someone else perpetrates onto them. The final thing you need to do is empower them and help them make decisions about what happens to them, but don’t force a decision on them,” says Edwards.

Kirsten Davis, 21, thought Edwards was an effective speaker and was impressed with what he had to say.

“I thought he was very informative and had an eyeopening message. He gave a lot of surprising facts, which I didn’t really expect, but at the same time kept it interesting. He didn’t just lecture to us; he really wanted everyone to understand the importance of his message,” says Davis.

Jean Goodnow, president of Delta College, appeared happy with the turnout of the event.

“His information was very relevant, and I’m glad we had so many students show up today to hear his message. I hope that now more than ever students know the importance of informed consent. There’s prevalence of sexual violence all around us, which is why it’s important that we educate both male and female students on this subject,” says Goodnow.

As much as I love shopping, I hate spending money because I just don’t have any. Every year, walking the Delta halls, I awe at cute clothes I see people strutting around in, but can’t get myself to go out and buy.

If you’re like me, and have a $0 budget for clothes, here are some tips while walking into the fall.

Utilize thrift stores Plato’s Closet, Goodwill, there is no shame! You got the same shirt as someone else for literally a

Online thrift stores Shopping online can be cheaper in general because it costs the company less. Add used clothing to that and you have cheaper than cheap. Thredup.com is an

online thrift shop where you can browse from under $10 to $300 used designer clothing. You can also donate your old clothes here. They send you a bag, do all the work and you get a donation tax receipt.

Nordstrom Rack One of the best-kept secrets of the internet has to be Nordstrom’s cheap website Nordstromrack.com. I personally can’t afford the air in Nordstrom, and this site can save lives when you love the brand name but also love to put food on your table.

Don’t forget about the basics Places like Old Navy and Target don’t get much of a good rep for trendy clothes. But, really, when have you ever left emptyhanded? Target has everything for a steal! Don’t forget that the basics are basic for a reason!

KELLEN MacGREGOR With the sole prerequisite being an interest in either film or media, the Film Production Club at Delta College opens its doors to students of various backgrounds and talents to showcase their filmmaking abilities and expand their knowledge in the ever changing field of film.

The club has contributed its expertise to producing advertisements for several departments and organizations throughout Delta. From introductory videos for Delta faculty to video advertisements for Phi Theta Kappa, the Film Production Club prides itself on its versatility and willingness to offer assistance.

During the rare respite from filmmaking, the club seizes every opportunity to thoroughly enjoy itself.

“Usually the Film Pro Club and its members sit and converse about projects that we've worked on related to film or are currently working on, asking for others’ opinions,” says president Kevin Lazzaro.

“We also just talk about film and media in general and joke around. The atmosphere is very light – it's a fun time!” says Lazaro.

Advised by adjunct professor and filmmaker Michael Randolph, members look up to Randolph as an individual whom they strive to be in

the film industry, due to his extensive experience and hopeful near-future collaborative opportunities.

BAY CITY - The citywide film and music festival Hell’s Half Mile celebrates its 12th year in the heart of downtown Bay City.

Filmgoers from surrounding communities flooded the State Theatre for the opening night Sept. 29.

The opening film “The Scent of Rain and Lightning” left an impression on audience members. Cynthia Drouse of Bay City was delighted with the entire evening, starting out at the opening reception followed by the screening of the indie film.

“The movie was twisted, but that’s what made it really good. I can tell there’s going to be a great selection of films this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing the shorts this weekend,” says Drouse.

Festival director Alan LaFave appeared thrilled with the turnout of opening night.

“We’ve got a lot of great guests this year, more than we’ve ever had before, and more feature films than we had last year,” says LaFave.

The Old Adage was the first musical performance of the weekend. Mimi Chavez and Nino Chavez brought a touch of pop rock to Old City Hall. The brother-sister duo from Detroit have never visited Bay City before and were excited to be a part of the festival this year.

“This is just such a fun atmosphere. Now that our set is done, we’re just looking forward to getting to know as many people as we can,” says Chavez.

Mike O’Shea of Bay City has been attending the festival for four years and is most interested in the variety of bands attending this year.

Part of the Hell’s Half Mile mentality is that the best way to cap off a day of independent films is with a night full of independent music.

After the opening night festivities, Friday was quick to get things going. Indie movies, free workshops and a filmmaker reception all built up to the first of two main music showcases.

The Hell’s Half Mile Friday Music Night Sept. 29 featured five bands playing on two alternating stages at the Empire Room in downtown Bay City.

Willa Rae and the Minor Arcana opened with blisteringly sludgy riffs and the lead singer jumped onto the stage a minute into the first song to start belting out a baritone melody. Willa Rae and the Minor Arcana is simultaneously a frenetic, dark Southern rock band and a musical performance that has listeners irresistibly tapping their feet to the beat. They were the first band of the night and already the Empire Room was filling with Hellions to listen to a set of songs that sounded like the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic Western.

“It’s been a great time; it’s always nice to play intimate places like this. Folks are hungry for music in towns like this,” says lead singer Willa Rae. The Hell’s Half Mile team reached out to Willa Rae and the Minor Arcana and tried to get them to play in 2016, but were unable to make it work until this year’s festival. The band has more songs coming soon in addition to the songs on their Bandcamp and the music video they recently released.

by Detroit pop punkers Sidewatcher, who put on a show of surfy punk rock in the backroom of the Empire Bar. Quickly following up them was another Detroit-based band PALACES that had a set of songs consisting of surging guitars and throbbing bass lines that were reminiscent of bands like Queens of the Stone Age mixed with a healthy amount of Joy Division.

Closing out the night were The Messenger Birds, a two-piece band with a massive sound that made it hard to believe they only had two members up onstage.

Veterans to the Hell’s Half Mile scene, they played their cinderblock-crushing set to a welcoming and familiar crowd.

Even the music of Friday night was still just part of the events leading up to the coup de grace headlining music show at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple Saturday, Sept. 30. The lineup for this year featured local postrockers Strange Lakes, Chicago indie rock legends The Kickback, Grand Rapids alt-pop group Lipstick Jodi and Gringo Star, a psychedelic garage rock band hailing all the way from Atlanta.

“I really like the progressive movement of the town to a cultural hotspot that Hell’s Half Mile is a port of every year,” says Hell’s Half Mile regular Kirby Burns.

After interviewing nearly 20 people, the crew recognized that stigma circles addiction, limiting possible progression, and “Stigmatic” was born.

The film outlines the nationwide opioid crisis and explores each definition of the word “stigmatic” while delving deeper into Bay County with chilling facts about overdose and addiction.

screening debut at the Michigan Shorts Program following “Stigmatic: Our Opioid Crisis.”

Delta College English professor Jeff Vande Zande directed both the two minute short film The Artist’s Statement and the seven minute drama Trample Tino. Vande Zande states that there’s added pressure for others to see his projects because of being a screenwriting professor.

“It’s exciting. It’s also a little worrisome. With any creative activity you’re putting yourself out there. I’m a teacher in a program so my work sort of represents the program,” says Vande Zande.

The short film “Gut Instinct,” written and produced by Delta College students, also made its world premiere at the Michigan Shorts program.

Gut Instinct is a story of a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder who leaves his family after a dangerous episode.

He becomes an unlikely hero while trying to save a young female from danger.

Christopher Williams, writer of the original screenplay, drew inspiration for his screenplay from his past life experiences.

“I grew up not knowing who my father was, and to this day I still don’t know. I could walk down the street and not know

if any man is my father, so I just decided to explore those feelings and to see what would come out on paper,” says Williams.

Aaron Thompson, director of the film, was excited for the film to be featured in Hell’s Half Mile film festival.

“This is the first time that I’ve had any real film experience other than stuff I make for fun. I really wanted to capture the film for what it was. It’s a very serious film and I wanted to do the script justice, so it was nerve-racking, but also a lot of fun at the same time,” says Thompson.Vande Zande says that Hell’s Half Mile is a great opportunity for Delta students to network with other independent filmmakers and provides them opportunities to learn more about their craft.

“For our student filmmakers it gives them exposure in a real theatre setting. To be able to have a very well attended screening and have 60 or 70 people watching a student’s short film is a rare thing so I think that Hell’s Half Mile is wonderful in terms of what it does for Delta and our students,” says Vande Zande.

It was one of the events of the last day of the festival, and the Delta College Planetarium found itself filled with various local organizations and people

within Bay City, so getting to be a part of the festival and engage with people in downtown was an exciting and valuable opportunity for the organization.

Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows. But what he tweets can be very interesting to say the least.

Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me: Sept. 25, Trump tweeted about Puerto Rico, which was hit by hurricane Maria.

So far, the only help that President Trump has offered is via Twitter, but is that really surprising? When he traveled down to

Texas after hurricane Harvey, he never left a conference room. But yeah, I wholeheartedly believe his concern.

President Trump, why are you insulting a dictator who has nuclear weapons reserved for the United States on Twitter of all places? You are threatening a man who hates the United States. Over Twitter.

Does anyone else see multiple problems with that?

First of all, it doesn’t matter if any parts of this tweet is true.

Do not make the claim, “...will be tested like never before!”

You are insinuating that something is coming for Kim Jong-un from the United States. I don’t want to be involved in a World War III. I don’t want threats to be made from our commanderin-chief from a social media platform. It’s dangerous and completely unprofessional. Trump needs to stop acting like a child and start addressing international affairs in professional meetings where they belong. But apparently that’s too much to ask of the President.

How many times is Trump

going to complain about the media being against him? It’s getting really tiresome. And honestly, no one really cares if Facebook likes you or not. Stop with the fake news.

Some of the media outlets you are bashing were credibly established before you were born. Just please stop. Also, on a side note, funny how you used the term “collusion.” I wonder where you’ve heard that word before?

Collegiate Tries It: Jessica uses Tinder for a week JESSICA SIEROCKI

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely detest relationships.

Kudos to those who like being in a relationship, but the only kind of affectionate interaction I’m interested in is petting a super fluffy dog. I’ve never had a Tinder, never wanted to have a Tinder, and yet, here we are.

Am I looking forward to this?

Absolutely not. What am I gaining out of this? I’m not really sure. But who knows, maybe I’ll despise it even more than I think I will. There’s always hope.

DAY ONE How the hell do I use this thing? I was messaging friends at 11 p.m. trying to figure out how this app worked because I thought there would be more than just closeups of people.

Literally the only thing I knew about this app is that swiping left means you don’t like the person.

Who would have guessed it was just pictures of random guys?

Like, their faces are literally the

size of my phone screen. And have you ever seen guys take selfies? Some of them… just… yikes.

I’ve been using the app for maybe an hour and I’ve swiped right maybe four times. But good news that I now know what happens when you make a match, so that’s interesting. Am I going to do anything with my matches? Not as this time, no. Or maybe ever. Only time will tell.

But probably not.

DAY TWO So, it’s still really weird to me that I’m technically online dating. As of lately, I haven’t really seen anyone that makes me undeniably grateful that I downloaded this app.

The bummer about living in this small country town is that most of the guys in this area are the type who wear nothing but camouflage and show pictures either holding a freshly caught fish or are holding hands with

their ex-girlfriend. Classy. But also not the kind of guy I’d ever consider messaging.

DAY THREE I cannot believe how many people I know on here. Like, there are so many people I went to school with and I had no idea that they were even in Saginaw anymore. Or alive for that matter. And what’s with the people who are already in a relationship but are looking for “that extra someone to add a spark into our relationship”? I mean, you do you, but gross.

DAY FOUR This app isn’t such a bad thing after all. I’ve come to realize that no one is able to see if I swipe left on them which means I’m basically judging these random strangers for fun. That sounds incredibly awful but we all do it and I’m just the one who has the nerve to say it. I love to judge people and when I don’t actually have to see these people in

I like my independence, I like being in charge of my own destiny and I don’t honestly know how I would react if another person came into my life and interfered with all of my plans.

DAY SEVEN So this is my last day on Tinder and I have some mixed feelings. I’ve seen some pretty interesting people on this app, but I’m highly doubtful that I’ll keep it. I came across a lot of unexpected people and I saw a lot of things that I wish that I had never seen. For those of you who are advocates of Tinder, congrats, but as for me, after this experience I’m going to have to pass on online dating. For forever.

Someone is going to become whiney. It just happens. One person still craves the affection that once filled every moment of your time together, and the other one is ready to step into a new phase: personal space. It’s OK! Not holding hands is perfectly acceptable. Falling asleep without cuddling is more than normal.

People need personal space, learn to enjoy it!

The sex may slow down.

If you’re in a physical relationship, the intimacy tends to stall a bit when you get in it for the long run. It’s easy to take this setback personally, and this can be a confusing time, but remember that it’s only slowing down because you two are in it for the long run! Take this time to appreciate other things that your significant other does for you. Starting a new hobby together can be just as emotionally fulfilling as sex.

You may fight.

The transition between honeymoon to long-term can be hard. However, this is where you start to feel amazingly

comfortable with someone; maybe sometimes you feel a bit too comfortable. It’s easy to nitpick at your partner. Why are you so messy? Why don’t we ever do anything anymore? Why are you breathing so loudly? You know, the normal stuff. Though this is normal, remember not to nitpick too much. Those annoying habits are some of the reasons you fell in love with them, right? Remember to complement as much as you nag.

You may not know what’s next.

If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking to move forward. Once you’re out of the honeymoon phase it can feel like you’re not in a phase at all. I assure you, you’re in the best one!

This is the part of your life where you start to intwine in someone else’s. You get to come home and gush out all of your day to the person you love and combine your assets with theirs. This is the phase where you stop seeing your life as one and become a powerful unit. This is the part where you fall deeper and deeper in love.

America’s serial killer: The Second Amendment The beginning of October brought tragedy to Nevada when a 64-year-old man shot and killed 59 people and injured hundreds more in the U.S.’s deadliest mass shooting in modern history.

“There’s nothing we can do about it” has been a sentence floating around social media since the event. The right to bare arms is our Second Amendment, protected by the Constitution.

This right was put into place back when guns shot one bullet at a time. It was an Amendment to protect us against our government because of our flee from Great Britain, a country where government held weapons and citizens did not.

The Amendment is far from “protecting” ourselves from government. Now, we can’t even protect this country from ourselves. We didn’t change the Amendment after Sandy Hook – when our children were killed and the country was devastated – so will we change it now?

What amount of gun-related violence will it take for this country to understand that the right to bare arms is the

deadliest killer that we currently face?

This shooter, who passed every background check and held his guns legally, is the prime example of why our gun laws need to change. One of the biggest pro-Second Amendment arguments is that making guns illegal will only force criminals to obtain guns from the black market. Maybe so, but if we could have saved 59 lives this month, how many could we save in a year, or two, or even 10?

Where is Obama when you need him? Our current president is probably going to tweet the problem away, right?

Here, now, thousands of miles away from the shooting, we need to rally and get our government to change the law that’s killing our friends and families. The Second Amendment was for protection, not so every house in america could have AK-47s. Our government needs to prosecute this murder and amend this Amendment.

‘Mother!’ knows best KELLEN MACGREGOR

From “Requiem for a Dream” to “Black Swan,” Darren Aronofsky’s filmography has ranged from a harrowing look into drug addicts’ lives to a ballerina struggling to distinguish reality from imagination. Aronofsky’s latest film “Mother!” is as distinct as his first work “Pi” in terms of its experimental and openness for interpretation, which has rekindled my fondness for his work.

First of foremost, I had despised Jennifer Lawrence and her acting until I saw this movie. I have always found her I’m-just-an-ordinary-girl-fromKentucky personality almost as ostentatious as Taylor Swift’s ostensible naivete. Nonetheless, “Mother!” and JLaw’s performance tarnished this notion of mine and thoroughly impressed me.

The plot revolves around a husband (“Him” played by Javier Bardem) and wife (“mother” played by Jennifer Lawrence) whose home begins to harbor strangers little by little. Initially offering a space for a middleaged couple (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer), the couple’s house becomes taken over by fans of Him’s poetry.

When I first saw this film, my anxiety soared through the theater’s roof. Witnessing this huge influx of people entering and taking advantage of a once-tranquil home awakened anxieties I never knew I had. If anyone dares sit on my unbraced sink, there will be serious consequences.

What especially impressed me about “Mother!” was the imagery. From biblical to climate change-related references, every scene hid something that resurfaced each time I saw the movie – a total of three times. One of my favorite and more obvious instances is the stylistic capitalization (or lack thereof) throughout the film’s ad campaigns and end credits.

Next time you see the film, stay for the credits and notice whose name is capitalized; this will reveal a major theme present in “Mother!”

Though “Mother!” has been released and treated as a major motion picture produced by Paramount Pictures, it hasn’t been well-received by most filmgoers – understandably so.

Aronofsky is a controversial director whose films explore themes seldom touched by mainstream filmmakers.

13 The average moviegoer, who expects to be consistently entertained, will overlook the symbolism and hidden plot within “Mother!” Not to say that only intellects or film connoisseurs will enjoy it, “Mother!” is for an audience quick to notice Aronofsky’s blatant symbols, all conveying a “Mother Nature meets God” metaphor.

Squeamish individuals should refrain from seeing this thriller, as the ending is one that will traumatize even the strongest of minds – a society as desensitized to violence as America’s will find the ending unsettling due to its violation of “film norms.”

My recommendation is that you should come to “Mother!” with no expectations. Although the violence and mistreatment of characters may seem senseless, there is a reason for every punch, kick and neck-breaking.

Watch the film with a friend or two and have a discussion afterward while collectively trying to find a meaning behind “Mother!” Interpretations will most likely vary, but if stumped, turn to Google for answers. You may end up enjoying the film as you read in depth about its secrets.

Jiu-jitsu blue belt Peggy Barber wins gold in Vegas ADAM PRZESLAK UNIVERSITY CENTER– Delta College health and wellness professor Peggy Barber traveled to Las Vegas for the World Master Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship Aug. 24.

The Masters Championship is a tournament specifically for those 30 years old and over and is hosted alongside the World IBJJF Championship, the tournament for competitors younger than 30. Without a single loss during the roundrobin tournament Barber was named the gold medalist in the women’s featherweight division by the IBJJF, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

Barber, a four-stripe blue belt, currently ranks fifth among all female blue belts worldwide with a score of 189 points. She has also never allowed a point to be scored on her nor lost a match in her jiu-jitsu career. Her trip to the World Championship is certainly one of triumph. Not only did she overcome obstacles from opponents on the mat, but she also overcame a horrific injury suffered two years ago.

“I had set this goal two years prior to this: I had hoped to be at World Champions last year, but I tore my anterior cruciate ligament and had to have my knee reconstructed,” Barber recalls.

The injury kept her out for well over a year with just a year

alone of not being able to train on the mat, which certainly made the achievement that much sweeter. She replays the moment in her head during the gold medal-winning match in which her opponent tapped out.

“I had goosebumps,” Barber says. “It’s one of the greatest moments next to having my son.

It was a great moment because it was a goal and just getting there and getting to compete at 50 years old and being able to do this is a pretty cool thing.”

Barber’s next steps include becoming a purple belt, the next step above a blue belt, and winning a gold medal in the purple belt featherweight division at the Masters Championship. She also enjoys the “gentle martial art” of

jiu-jitsu with her husband Joe, who joined her in competing in Las Vegas, and her son Vince, who competes in local youth tournaments.

The longtime Delta professor trains at Palms Brazilian JiuJitsu located on Freeland Road in Saginaw. She trains under experienced instructor and coach Carl Rabideau. Rabideau and Barber once taught a jiujitsu course at Delta College, but the class hasn’t been offered in recent years due to scheduling conflicts and time availabilities.

Barber intends to restart the course when she gains a purple belt and is able to instruct the class on her own. For students interested in jiu-jitsu, the course may be offered again as soon as the fall semester in 2018.

Lady Pioneers continue winning streak, ranked seventh nationwide

ADAM PRZESLAK UNIVERSITY CENTER– The Lady Pioneers have extended their win streak to five games.

On Sept. 27 they took on Ancilla College in the middle of a series of home games. The Delta squad dominated the Chargers and won the contest 4-1.

An early goal from Lady Pioneer Lindsey Musser ten minutes into the contest became the first of many goals from Delta. It was a series of lategame goals that would secure the victory for the Delta squad, however. Ancilla’s Haley Abel offered up the only score of the game for the Chargers around the 43 minute mark. The second half would consist of a strong, striking offense and an attentive defense from the Lady Pioneers.

Scoring for Delta in the second half was Taylor Farrand, Kaitlyn Viaene and Elena Lippert. The goalkeepers also continued their season-long success as Kalyn Breckenridge chalked up five saves.

Sept. 30 saw Cincinnati State

make a visit to University Center.

The Lady Pioneers showed up to play and that’s exactly what they did in this captivating 6-0 win. A, seemingly, never-ending scoring streak rocketed the team past the Cincinnati Surge. Skylar Eckert scored first booting one in nearly a minute into the game thanks to a Farrand pass. This wasn’t the last time we heard from Farrand as she sealed the deal with the final score of the game around the eighty minute mark.

Madison Jewell would also score a goal this game as well as Lippert again. Freshman forward Casey Allessie scored back-toback goals in the second half two minutes and two seconds apart from each other. Goalkeepers Breckenridge and Hannah Bauer had a great game in net with two saves from Breckenridge.

Conference rivals Lake Michigan College challenged Delta in their last home game before a two-game away trip.

A winless Lake Michigan team

sought out their first victory of the season again the Lady Pioneers. Their efforts couldn’t turn up a win as Delta scored an unanswered goal in each half to win it 2-0.

A goal from Farrand in the first half and a goal from Eckert in the second half were the only points of the game. Lake Michigan’s defenders were tough but thankfully for the Lady Pioneers their offense was skilled enough to find the back of the net twice. This game extended their win streak to five straight games.

With the regular season nearly wrapped up the Lady Pioneers will be playing Schoolcraft at home Wednesday Oct. 11 at 4:00 p.m. and Cincinnati State at home Wednesday Oct. 18 at 4:00 p.m.

The regionals tournament is set to begin Wednesday Oct. 25 and you can bet that the one-loss seventh ranked Lady Pioneers will be taking part..
