Fixing the road ahead with Governor Whitmer Jordan Green Editor-in-Chief @Jordan_Green6

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Like many of us who were greatly impacted by the pandemic and shutdown orders, Governor Gretchen Whitmer agrees that 2020 can be described by the latin phrase: Annus horribilis: a year of horribles. Beginning her third State of the State address with a relatable anecdote, Governor Whitmer promises for a year of bipartisan cooperation and successes. The Democratic Governor says that while it’s easy to get lost in the negatives, the year ahead will be one of positivity. Whitmer then took a moment to remember the 14,000 Michigangers that were lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the regulations that took away any normalcy and comfort during the sudden death

of a loved one — Zoom calls to say goodbye to loved ones, limited funeral attendance and limited to no visitations at the hospital. “The state of our state is… resilient.” Reflecting on how our cozy, mitten state handled the pandemic, Whitmer also recognized the state’s diligent efforts to “flatten the curve,” and the continuous hard work of frontline workers. Whitmer commended businesses like Detroit Sewn, that changed their machinery to manufacture masks, hand sanitizer, gloves, or ventilators during a nationwide shortage. “The world saw just how tough Michanders are. When we get knocked down, we dust ourselves off and pull each other back up.” A major point Governor Whitmer made was the bipartisan successes in Michigan. Whitmer reassured Michiganders that the [polarization] seen in Washington is not reflected in the Great Lakes State. She then highlighted the bipartisan deals that

Whitmer pleaded to fellow Michigan lawmakers, “tap into that same energy and end the pandemic, revitalize our economy and get our kids back in school.” “After all, we’re Michiganders first.”

Instead of Whitmer’s “Fix the Damn Roads” slogan that accompanied her 2018 campaign, the 49th Governor of Michigan reveals she is launching a “Fixing the Damn Road Ahead” tour to hear the thoughts of Michiganders — lake to lake. Whitmer hopes to have a year of improved bipartisan cooperation, and improved health to bring Michigan back to life after a year of horribles.

The nation takes a pause for peace Jordan Green - Editor-in-Chief @Jordan_Green6 UNIVERSITY CENTER — A deafening, pause of unity echoed throughout the country during President Biden’s inauguration. But it didn’t come from the Democratic celebration of winning the White House seat. Or the Republican stubborn absence — former President Donald Trump became the first president in recent history to not attend his successor’s inauguration. Instead, the one, unifying breath of fresh air for 2021, for America, and for generations to come was the standout poet, Amanda Gorman. At the age of twenty-two, Gorman became the youngest inaugural poet in United States history, where she read an original poem called “The Hill We Climb.” Gorman’s poem resonate with American’s as they listened to the “Skinny Black girl” speak of peace and resilient-hope on the

A graduate of Harvard, and student of Sociology, Amanda Gorman is just stepping into the water of one of America’s finest writers. Gorman’s work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, marginalization and the African diaspora. She became the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017 at the age of 19. The National Youth Poet Laureate title is held by a young person who demonstrates skills in the arts, expresses leadership qualities, and takes action against current social and political issues.

But in all the bridges we've made, that is the promise to glade, the hill we climb. If only we dare. It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it's the past we step into and how we repair it. The Hill We Climb - Amanda Gorman

Matthew Stafford will be missed Kelvin Butler Reporter @KelvinButler19

UNIVERSITY CENTER —— Saturday was a very difficult day for the Detroit Lions as the Lions traded away Matthew Stafford for two first round picks, a third round pick and former No.1 overall pick Jared Goff. Ending the Matthew Stafford era in Detroit. But like all of the Lions best players, his team success in Detroit was a bit disappointing. With him having only four seasons with a winning record and going winless in his three trips into the NFL playoffs. Beside his unfortunate team success he was still the best quarterback in the history of the Detroit Lions. His 45,000 passing yards and 282 passing touchdowns has easily earned him that title. His immense arm talent was always known by the players, coaches, and etc. Some put him in the top three strongest arms in the NFL currently. His grit and will has been shown a lot dealing with season long injuries, playing threw them as if they were nothing. Stafford has had some inopportune mishaps in some of his more important games, but you can’t say he never gave up on the team while he was on the field. He has dealt with multiple coaches, coordinators and schemes in his time there. Some years the Lions defense wasn’t the

He’s tied for the seventh all-time for the most fourth quarter comebacks for a reason. Stafford will eventually be a member in the Lions ring of honor for his high level production he gave on the field for the past 12 seasons. Hopefully he’ll get a shot at improving his playoff numbers, seeing that he now has a top five defense in the Los Angeles Rams.

UNIVERSITY CENTER —— The Brooklyn Nets are a complete dream come true, if this was a video game obviously. But seeing how the Eastern Conference of the NBA doesn’t have a number one team, just a lot of contenders, the Nets have a shot at going to the NBA Finals. The trio of Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving will be extremely difficult to overcome if they all are playing well. Even if one of them has a bad night the other two can easily compensate for the off player. The only issue for them is that as of right now, they have zero depth and defense. Durant is a good defender but Harden and Irving are ok at best. The other role players aren’t too defensively minded, except for maybe two of the players. Who knows, the three empty roster spots the Nets have can be filled with defensive players, who can make up for their defensive struggles they are currently facing. If the Nets can somehow address their defense problems, things may work out. The Nets could guarantee themselves a trip to the finals, barring injuries or illnesses. If they don’t make it to the finals without any disruptions, it will be a failure of a season for them. Just like the Los Angeles Clippers had in 2020.

The secret is the Smoothie: How these delicious smoothies can trick you into having fruit Haeley Huggard Managing Editor @HaeleyHuggard

SAGINAW — Of all the healthiest snacks you can have, many would suggest that fruit is the best choice. But there are some people who don’t particularly love fruit or certain types of fruit. So how can you trick yourself into having something you may not even like? The answer is a smoothie. Various sources claim that when fruits and vegetables are picked and frozen at their peaked ripeness, they retain mineral and vitamin content that’s comparable to fresh produce. Some vegetables and fruits can even retain more nutrients when frozen compared to when they are consumed fresh. One benefit of having frozen fruits is that they last longer. Oftentimes we end up throwing out foods when they go bad and no one wants to eat a strawberry that has turned to mush or is covered in mold. Frozen fruits can also be found at cheaper prices which works well for those who are on a budget. So how exactly should you begin your smoothie endeavors? One great way to experiment with your tastebuds is to throw a bunch of frozen fruit in a blender and get creative. Most important of all to remember is to start simple. You don’t have to have fancy combinations for a smoothie to be flavorful. Start off with a few beginner combinations such as:

• •

•

Banana, strawberries, and two-percent milkThis is probably the most basic and well-liked combination. A premixed bag of blueberries, strawberries, razzberries and two-percent milk- premixed bags can be found for as little as two or three dollars at your local retailer. Strawberries, pineapple, and almond milk- Almond milk can be quite tasty and blends well with fruits.

If your ready to move on from beginner status and try more fancy combinations try these: • Pineapple, mango, coconut, papaya, vanilla sweetener, and almond milk- the vanilla sweetener is optional, but it adds a nice subtle vanilla flavor to your fruity combination. • Dark, sweet cherries, red tart cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and almond milk- it sounds like an overwhelming combination but it's very tasty! This combination can also be found as a pre-mixed bag in the frozen food section. • Blueberries, pineapple, coconut, spinach and two-percent milk- adding spinach to a smoothie may sound gross but it actually blends in well with the other flavors and provides a great source of vitamins, calcium, and fiber. If you are looking to add something healthy and fun to your diet, a smoothie is a good way to go, especially if you are not overly fond of fruits. Having a smoothie is a great way to sneak fruits into your diet as well as help you learn to like them over time.
