Michigan’s roads have long been a source of embarrassment, causing untold damages to personal vehicles and impeding commerce across the state. Lawmakers in Lansing have ÀQDOO\ FRPH XS ZLWK D SODQ WR À[ WKH problem and now face the long road to voter approval.

In December, lawmakers in Lansing passed a collection of 11 bills as part of a bipartisan plan to improve road funding in Michigan It’s estimated the plan will raise an annual $1.2 billion a year for road funding, increase revenue for schools by an estimated $300 million, and raise $100 million for public transit. “We take it for granted just how bad the roads are in Michigan,� said Eric “Q� Beckman, Delta associate professor of economics. “The rest of the country sees how bad our roads are, it sends the message that we don’t support infrastructure as a state.�

The key measure in the plan is an amendment to the Michigan Constitution that will raise the state sales tax from six to seven percent.

The proposal will face voter approval on May 5, and with a tax increase included in the plan, some legislators are happy voters will get to make the Ă€QDO FDOO “I believe that with a proposed tax increase of this size it is important that the people have a chance to vote on it,â€? said Senator Mike Green via email correspondence. Green, a Republican, represents Bay, Lapeer,

and Tuscola counties. “I am looking forward in the coming months, to hearing all of the information from both sides of the issue.�

The money collected through the sales tax increase is designed to offset the loss of funding that will come with the other part of the plan, to remove the sales tax on fuel and reform the current gas tax. If the amendment fails to pass, the entire road funding plan will fail with it and lawmakers will be back to square one.

The state of Michigan’s roads have long been a source of concern for citizens and lawmakers. While previous efforts at reform stalled in Lansing, the roads throughout Michigan have continued to deteriorate, and patience is growing thin. “They’re crap. I feel like we all know that,� said Heather Gray, a student majoring in Dietetics. “I feel like they can explore how other states get their money for roads, compare and contrast, and see what will work for the people of Michigan.�

According to The Road Information Group (TRIP), a national research group dedicated to transportation and roads, Michiganders pay less per capita than any other state on road maintenance.To understand the reasons Michigan roads are so bad has to do with how the state currently raises revenue for road funding.

Vasopressin is related to long-term bonding, says Urbano. This is the phase that allows couples to stick together and raise children. It is linked to the reward centers of the brain and mammals who are monogamous have higher levels of vasopressin than do non-monogamous mammals.

This is also the stage when oxytocin is released. Oxytocin (commonly referred to as the “love hormone� or “cuddle hormone�) is a hormone released during orgasm and plays a crucial role in making couples feel attached to each other. Oxytocin also plays a role in cementing the bond between a mother and her child as it is released during childbirth and

breastfeeding, according to an article on the American Psychological Association website.

After all of this, an important question is raised. Does love come from the heart or the brain? “Science is showing us that it probably comes from the brain,� says Urbano. She goes on, though, to explain how when people get married and make vows, they believe in those vows and the commitment. At that point, it’s not just the chemistry keeping them together. “The brain falls in love but love is something more than logic,� says 43-year-old Delta student, Dave Stocker. “Love surpasses logic.�

In Fall 2014, Jack Wood, who was both Library Manager and LLIC Director, stepped down from his positions after almost nine years of service.

Not long after, on 6HSW 0LFKHOOH 3UDWW ÀOOHG :RRG¡V shoes as Library Manager.

Pratt said there were multiple reasons for relocating to Delta College. “My husband and I wanted to PRYH XS QRUWK IRU D ZKLOH ,¡YH EHHQ looking for a different place to work DQG 'HOWD¡V OLEUDU\ ZDV ELJJHU 1RZ ZH OLYH LQ %HQWOH\ ZH¡UH XS QRUWK DQG still unpacking in our free time.â€?

Pratt moved from her home in Lake Orion and now lives in Bentley with her husband and their dog Sam. In her spare time, she likes to read and spend time with friends and

family. She has also collected M&M memorabilia over the years. “It started back when I was a college student,� Pratt said. “Everyone had nicknames, but I did not.

So, they took the initials from my ÀUVW DQG PLGGOH QDPH DQG FDOOHG me M&M. After that, my cousin bought me refrigerator magnets, and VLQFH WKHQ ,¡YH FROOHFWHG HYHU\WKLQJ M&M. I have a mousepad, coffee mugs, coasters, a business card holder, you name it.�

She was also on the Michigan Library Association Academic Libraries Workshop Committee in 2010, and on the SouthEastern Michigan League of Libraries (SEMLOL) Board of Directors from 2008 to 2012 and was secretary from 2012 to 2014. “On the committee (MLAALWC), we were in charge of planning annual two day conferences and on 6(0/2/¡V %RDUG RI 'LUHFWRUV ZH scheduled two workshops, also annually,â€? Pratt explained. “These were all positions I held just before moving to Bentley and starting as the Library Manager at Delta College.â€?

Since joining the Delta College Library, Pratt has assisted in coordinating the Traveling Lincoln ([KLELW ZKLFK FRQVLVWHG RI ÀYH ODUJH displays that were open in the back of the library for students to view. She also helped put together the Delta Authors event which celebrated Delta staff and faculty who have successfully published their own works of

With five decades of involvement in Buena Vist a Charter Township (BVCT), 54-yearold Dwayne Parker has seen his city go through some rough times. Now, as the Buena Vista supervisor, he is on a mission to bring his city back.

´,¡P %XHQD 9LVWD EUHG WKURXJK and through,â&#x20AC;? Parker explained.

Parker has plenty of projects he is working on. One project Parker is stoked about is the new Arlington & Rienbold districts drain and road project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a major project,â&#x20AC;? said Parker.

7KH PDMRULW\ RI %9¡V FRPplaints are about the roads, Parker explained. Parker decided to reach out to Saginaw County Road Commission and Saginaw County Public Drain Commission. Parker made FOHDU ´,W¡V H[WUHPHO\ H[SHQVLYH ¾ VR the township and the residents are paying for it, through a special assessment program.

Parker was fortunate enough to have a close knit family, community, mentors, coaches and a big brother.

That kind of background is why Parker feels strongly about his hometown. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am fortunate to have grown up with guidance,â&#x20AC;? said Parker.

After graduating from BV high school in 1979 Parker received a scholarship from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. and eventually a college degree.

:KHQ KH Ă&#x20AC;QLVKHG FROOHJH KH began his professional career in Kalamazoo, Mich. working for the Kalamazoo Public School system. After working there for a couple of years his mother became ill with cancer. He moved back home to be with her and when she passed away, he decided to stay in the area.

Parker launched the Buena Vista Business Association in 2010. Its "Buy BV First Initiative" has proven to be a positive injection to the local business community. The concept is

In 2005, Parker started Neighborhood Watch programs in BVCT, DQG WKUHH RXW RI Ă&#x20AC;YH SUHFLQFWV VWLOO have acting programs. He reached out to Habitat for Humanity and BVCT LV QRZ LQ \HDU WKUHH RI LWV Ă&#x20AC;YH \HDU Brush Up program. The program was repaired and painted 47 so far.

Parker is part of the Breakfast of Champions Men's Club which serves as the Mid-Michigan chapter of "Shoes that Fit," a national charity organization. They have provided up to 2,000 free pairs of shoes to Buena Vista elementary school students over WKH SDVW Ă&#x20AC;YH \HDUV Parker championed the BVCT "Spring Clean Up Day." This event gives the community one day a year where residents can throw away absolutely anything and the service is completely free.

He is also on a campaign called Fight the Blight. They demolish abandoned homes and the campaign reaches out to the county land bank and the state to obtain funds and grants. So far they have received half a million dollars.

Parker was on the committee for the BVCT Alzheimer "Miles for Memory" walk which raises money IRU $O]KHLPHU¡V FDUH DQG UHVHDUFK With so much community involvement in the past, Parker has big plans for the future.

Parker would like to see a hotel task force established to take care of the issues that plague their current hotels.

"Frankenmuth is the largest tourist attraction for people in Michigan, and BV is only 10 miles away,â&#x20AC;? explained Parker. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want BVCT to be WKH JR WR SODFH IRU RYHUĂ RZ SHRSOH My ultimate goal [is to] be a township of the 21st century."

The first competition of the Great Lakes Bay Reg ion dance-off for charity â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Swingshift and the Stars â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is coming up on Feb 13 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Bay City. This event brings â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dancing with the Starsâ&#x20AC;? style competitions to the local community by having couples dance for a certain charity.

The charities being supported at the affair this year are Heroes for Kids, Hidden Harvest, the Great Lakes Bay Region YWCA, Prostate

Students today are so comfortable in cyberspace that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always think about possible threats to their privacy.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, Data Privacy Day put the spotlight on these threats.

'HOWD¡V 2IĂ&#x20AC;FH RI ,QVWLWXWLRQDO Technology set up an information booth near the Red Brix cafĂŠ and helped students and staff alike examine their online activities.

According to Steven Rushing, the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s events promote online security awareness to young people throughout the country. Rushing worries that Delta students donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize just how much of their information is open to the public. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As our online presence grows, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crucial that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re aware of what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re putting online and how to protect it,â&#x20AC;? said Rushing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As students itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extremely important for potential emSOR\HUV , NQRZ DV D PDQDJHU P\VHOI we look online when we interview people, and we keep an eye out for UHG Ă DJV ZKDW SHRSOH DUH SRVWLQJ and who they are.â&#x20AC;?

Unique and creative passwords are the key to protecting yourself.

Password security is a big concern for Delta student, Megan Escamilla, 20, of Bay City. Her personal Twitter account was hacked in 2010, and as a result, password security is something she takes very seriously.

Luke Goodrow, a 25-year-old Delta College worker and former student, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know that Data Privacy Day was a thing. But he said that people should be cognizant of the information that they put online, and should not put info online that could come back to haunt them.

He has some good advice to those who are looking for some when it comes to not getting hacked. For instance; changing your password, and not using the same password for every account that you have. Have at least eight characters in your passwords with numbers and symbols.

Directed by Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly and released in 2001, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shallow Halâ&#x20AC;? (Jack Black) wants a gal. But not just any gal. She has to be young, hot and interested in him. Considering that Hal is a misogynistic moron in khaki pants and bad button up Hawaiian shirts, the last quality is incredibly hard to come by.

To combat this, Hal and his friend Mauricio (Jason Alexander) go looking for the hot, drunk girl that will take one of them home for an awkward night of regret and maybe tears. Fortunately for everybody, this doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen. Now, Halâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out lookinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for love in all the wrong places, and he happens to cross paths with the famous TV hypnotist Tony Robbins (Anthony Robbins). Hal tells him about his disappointing dating career, and Tony, seeing the problem with Halâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s far too high standards, hypnotizes him into seeing the inner beauty of women, instead of the outer beauty.

Now, Hal is literally seeing the inner beauty of people. What he sees is what the other people perceive themselves to be, UHĂ HFWHG RQ WKHLU SHUVRQDOLWLHV 6R LQVWHDG of seeing an overweight, pimple covered half bald woman heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to see a EHDXWLIXO FRQĂ&#x20AC;GHQW ZRPDQ ZLWK OXVFLRXV hair and perfect skin. On the opposite end, if he sees a beautiful woman with perfect

makeup whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a terrible person, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to see some ugly, wrinkled old hag with a lot of makeup on.

This leads him to meet what he perceives as the love of his life, Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow). Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sporty, fun and does a lot of good work for the community.

Things go well between them for a while, until Halâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hypnotism is broken and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seeing Rosemary in the real world. Now Shallow Hal has to deal with his choices and work through peer pressure to be happy in life. , KDYH D YHU\ ORYH KDWH UHODWLRQVKLS with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shallow Hal.â&#x20AC;? On one hand, Jack Black has a direct line to my funny bone.

Chances are, I will laugh at a movie when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on screen. Seeing as how heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the star here, I laughed a lot during â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shallow Hal.â&#x20AC;?

On the other hand, it is ridiculously corny.

What kind of guy is going to base the type of woman he dates by a sentence of advice given to him by his father? Someone who clearly is going to grow up to make poor decisions anyway.

The message, of course, is that true love is supposed to conquer all. Does it conquer all, you ask? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not telling. What I will tell you is how Halâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special new â&#x20AC;&#x153;giftâ&#x20AC;? works is probably the most interesting take on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;inner beautyâ&#x20AC;? thing that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever seen. I love how itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hinted that Rosemary is incredibly overweight and not very nice to look at.

Seeing a very thin Gwyneth Paltrow do a cannonball into a pool that causes a very small tsunami is funny to me. Seeing her throw panties at Hal that are large enough to be used as a parachute for a young child is funny to me, because Hal is so wrapped up in his love for Rosemary that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just like â&#x20AC;&#x153;okay whatevsâ&#x20AC;? the entire time. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cheap humor, used like a kick to the groin would be used, but I still laughed at it.

The whole hypnotized notion that Hal Ă&#x20AC;QGV KLPVHOI VWXFN ZLWK LVQ¡W ZHOO WKRXJKW out, as it only seems to work on select people. For example, Halâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friend Mauricio doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change at all, nor does Rosemaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a selective â&#x20AC;&#x153;giftâ&#x20AC;? and can pull you out of the fun of the movie.

On Friday Feb. 13 and Saturday Feb. 14 at 8:30 p.m., the Planetarium will host the Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event â&#x20AC;&#x153;Romancing the Stars.â&#x20AC;? This couples-only event will have a show that goes through a tour of the universe as viewers learn which star clusters are constellations of love.

The show will last until approximately 9:45 p.m., after which dessert, coffee and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something different than going to dinner or out to the PRYLH Âľ VD\V $PDQGD +DDV RIĂ&#x20AC;FH assistant at the Planetarium.

Haas says that this show isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one that would normally be seen as it is made specially for this event.

The front entrance of Bay City Yoga, 921 Washington Ave, Bay City, was starting to warm up as Peter Hardy -- owner and yoga teacher from Munger -- joked about it being a literal â&#x20AC;&#x153;hot spot.â&#x20AC;?

Recently opening on Dec. 22, 2014, Bay City Yoga has been getting work done and spreading the word through social media, word of mouth, and the big sign out in front. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I saw the sign out front and googled it. I got really excited,â&#x20AC;? said Michele Forgash from Bay City, who KDV EHHQ SUDFWLFLQJ \RJD IRU Ă&#x20AC;YH years.

Bay City Yoga is open Monday through Sunday with a couple of classes offered throughout the day. These classes include, morning VWUHWFK JHQWOH Ă RZ WUDGLWLRQDO \RJD KDWKD \RJD YLQ\DVD Ă RZ WRGGOHU yoga, gentle traditional, decompression yoga, and ashtanga yoga.

Having started off practicing yoga in the early morning at the former Populace Cafe now called Harless + Hugh Cafe, Hardy and a small group of people would get together and share their love for yoga in the small back room. There are other alternatives to get a characterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reaction than having them in awkwardly drawn out sex scenes. Find other alternatives and use them. Feminism has been controversial ever since the movement started, and even though it is 2015, anti-feminist views are still rampant, which can be easily seen by a new internet trend: meninism. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rightsâ&#x20AC;? groups have been popular online for years, and the one thing that they have in common is that they spend more time bashing women (primarily feminists) more than they actually advocate for issues that affect men. The website, 5HWXUQ RI .LQJV LV D SULPDU\ example of a group fronting as a pro-male group, when, in reality, they are anti-female.

The site is brimming with articles on how all rape allegations are false (the FBI estimates that less than 8 percent are), how women of color are undesirable (as seen in the article â&#x20AC;&#x153;5 Reasons Why You Shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Date an Indian Girlâ&#x20AC;?) and slurs against practically any marginalized group you can think of.

However, the biggest issue with meninists is what sets them apart from other â&#x20AC;&#x153;menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rightsâ&#x20AC;? groups: the fact that they are much more mainstream because of Twitter. In fact, one of the biggest meninist Twitter accounts, @MeninistTweet, is selling #Meninist T-shirts online, and people are actually buying them.

If you look at @MeninistTweetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s account, which

Meninists donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care about men: Why the internet trend isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t doing anything helpful boasts over 614,000 followers, you will notice that most of the content revolves around two things: bashing women and complaining about how women wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t date them. The latter is the epitome of the entire meninist movement.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve yet to see a self-proclaimed meninist advocate for fathers to have a fairer chance in custody battles, for male survivors of rape and domestic violence (who are less likely to talk about their attacks than women are), or for men of color, gay and bi men, or transgender men. They also donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t discuss the toxicity of rigid gender roles on young boys, which psychologists and sociologists have deemed harmful. Meninists simply do not care about issues that truly affect males.

Feminism, on the other hand, is much more intersectional now than it ever has been.

Feminism is not about the value of women, but about the value of what is traditionally seen as â&#x20AC;&#x153;feminine.â&#x20AC;? That includes men who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wish to exude hypermasculinity, whether because they want to be more loving and affectionate parents, or because they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be ostracized for crying when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re upset. Feminists understand the harm that gender stereotypes cause, while meninists only seek to perpetuate them more.

Black History Month brings West African Drum and Dance group to campus BbYy MmEeGgHhAaNn FfEeLlCcHh PpHhOoTtOoGgRrAaPpHhEeRr

The Kuungana group doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just tell people about West African culture, they show it. The Delta commons were Ă&#x20AC;OOHG ZLWK SRXQGing rhythms from authentic African drums as their dancers, dressed in traditional colorful attire, demonstrated movements passed down through generations.

Flint-based drum and dance group, Kuungana, meaning â&#x20AC;&#x153;to connect,â&#x20AC;? performed at Delta Feb. 5. The group came with 10 of its members, a third of the whole company. Kuungana seeks to spread knowledge of West African culture, and performed songs

and dances that originated from Senegal, Ghana and the rest of the region.

In addition to performing pieces meant to â&#x20AC;&#x153;represent the goats that provide the skin for djembe drums,â&#x20AC;? the ensemble also requested audience participation. There was some UHOXFWDQFH DW Ă&#x20AC;UVW EXW JUDGXDOO\ D IHZ students came up to the stage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She made me do it,â&#x20AC;? said Ciera Robinson, after she and friend Jenna 'LFNHUVRQ ZHUH DPRQJ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW WR volunteer to dance with Kuungana.

In a break between songs, director Baba Collins shared some drum and dance history with the audience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Drums were used to send messages. It was a form of communication. If you saw a lion or something running across the land, how were

you going to tell somebody about it? Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no cell phones. You start drumming as fast as you possibly can.â&#x20AC;?

He also explained that some of Kuunganaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s movements had been passed down for thousands of years as a form of storytelling in West Africa. However, modern hip hop has borrowed some of these elements and American-ized them, like with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;stanky leg,â&#x20AC;? also known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;crazy leg.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We dance and we play every single day. This is a way of life and an important part of our culture. We also practice the seven principles of Kwanza and focus on being a community-based people,â&#x20AC;? said Collins.

The Kuungana community will at times contain three generations of members. Today was no exception with Jewellyne â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mama Jewelâ&#x20AC;?

been with Kuungana for six years, stated that her favorite part about the group was their opportunity to â&#x20AC;˘ educate others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education and entertainment: edutainment.â&#x20AC;?

Collins then ended the performance on a motivational note. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you want something, if you love something, work all you can, study hard all you can, because life is precious.
