Bay City Record Convention returns to Bay City with more vendors MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI ESSEXVILLE – The semiannual Bay City Record Convention held its first show of the year at the AMVET Post 22 in Essexville on Feb. 10, 2018.

In spite of the snowy weather that most of Lower Michigan had experienced that weekend, shoppers from all over the state came to the record show to shop for their most wished-for albums.

“There are a lot of gems to be found all over this place,” says Andy Hahn from Bay City, a first-time shopper at the record show. “My favorite part of it, is finding things that I didn’t know existed, like this Scott Baio album.”

The show was sponsored by several businesses: Radio Wasteland Records in Midland, Electric Kitsch in Bay City, Records and Tapes Galore in Saginaw, Bellsmith Graphic Design, Bags Unlimited and Goldmine Magazine.

“I came last year,” says Tara Kostick from Grand Blanc. “[I like] being able to find records that you might not be able to find in your local record stores. Old records, hard-to-find records, that kind of thing.”

according to Raymond Pounds, an administrator for the Facebook group Michigan Record Club who has been hosting the event for the past several years after a friend of his, Tim Taylor, started it.

“It was [Tim Taylor’s] dream to do the show, and he actually died two days after the [first] show, so I continued it in his name,” says Pounds. “It was just something I continued; it fell in my lap.”

According to Pounds, there were 33 tables set up at the event with 22 vendors present, a number which has grown from previous years. Albums of many different genres – including rock, blues, jazz, country and comedy – were sold in various formats including vinyl, compact disc and audio cassette.

“I’ve got vendors coming from way up north to down in the Detroit area, and they’re bringing people with them, so it’s evolved,” says Pounds. “We may eventually need a bigger place to do this, but I like this place. I like this hall, and the people here treat me good, so I’d say [our plans are] just to keep it going.”

Josh Felix, who represents a local media store chain called Media Reload, was one of the vendors present at the show.

“I like the crowd. The vendors are great, but the crowds especially are really excited about buying records, and they’ve got quite a voracious appetite for them,” says Felix. “It’s great to see people really excited about LPs.” The Bay City Record Convention will return again this year, on Saturday Sept.

Jan. 23, 2018 Delta College Public Safety is investigating the theft of equipment from the Automotive Tech classroom.

Jan. 26, 2018 Delta College Public Safety took a complaint regarding a student situation at the Ricker Center. A student reported that her vehicle was spat upon while in the parking lot.

Feb. 1, 2018 Delta College Public Safety is investigating an attempted assault of a student worker. The student worker alleged that an individual attempted to grab her. No contact was made and the student worker was not injured.

Feb. 6, 2018 Delta College Public Safety took a complaint regarding a suspicious email between a faculty member and a prior student.

Delta College Public Safety responded to four hit-and-run traffic crash in the parking lot and one car-deer accident on a public roadway. Delta College Public Safety also responded to nine medical and injury reports.

Sarah Thomas empowers women through sports JAYLIE DICE UNIVERSITY CENTER – Sarah Thomas, the first full-time female NFL referee, visited Delta College Feb. 7 as a part of the 19th annual President’s Speaker Series.

Thomas spoke to the audience about her life’s journey and love of sports.

Thomas also shared what set her apart from other athletes, which led to her receiving a full-ride scholarship for basketball and academics at the University of Mobile in Alabama.

“My message to those of you still in college: It wasn’t that I missed the call, got the call right, worked every play the right way, but it was how I carried myself on the field. The field presence that I had; to have confidence when I’m going in to talk or address something. Not to be overpowering, but just my field presence, they said, is what separated me,” says Thomas.

Becoming an official referee for the National Football League in 2015 earned Thomas a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Her hard work, dedication, years of experience and love of sports brought her to this groundbreaking position where she can be an inspiration for young females aspiring to be in the same field.

because you love it, the recognition comes because people see it in your work ethic.

Then you’re not going to be proving anyone wrong because you believe in yourself and you know you’re there for the right reason,” says Thomas.

By sharing words of empowerment from her experience in a male-dominated industry, Thomas stresses that whatever you do, you have to do it for you – not the recognition you may gain.

“What I say – especially to women or

minorities – is that if there is an issue, it’s not with the woman, it’s usually with the insecure person you’re having to deal with. So just understand, don’t do it for the recognition. Do it for the right reasons,” says Thomas.

Thomas stresses the importance of maintaining pride while overcoming obstructions and avoiding bridges that could be unnecessarily burned along the way. Thomas also emphasized the importance of working hard in life to

achieve your goals.

“If you believe in yourself, and if you’re doing it because you love it, not for the recognition, not to prove anyone wrong, but having a good attitude and putting in the work, then you can be successful. I’m here to tell you: Experience is irreplaceable, you cannot put a dollar sign on experience. You do yourself a good service by starting at the bottom and working your way up, so be proud of the situation,” says Thomas.

Alexis Gemmell, 19, thought Thomas was an inspirational speaker and enjoyed learning about her experience as a female in the sports industry.

“I thought Sarah Thomas did a really great job. She definitely showed that there’s a difference between men and women striving,” says Gemmell.

There were more than a few Delta students who attended and had the message resonate with them, and Thomas left the audience with one final thought as she concluded her speech.

“If my story or my journey can empower anybody to do what they want to do regardless of their gender, their age, their race, their social background, then that is what is more meaningful to me than anything,” says Thomas.

Board of Trustees meeting AS SEEN AROUND CAMPUS marks the last for Lutz JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – The February Board of Trustees meeting marks the last for Debra Lutz, Vice President of Business and Finance. Lutz says farewell to her position of Treasurer of the Board once she hits her retirement date of Feb. 28.

Board Chair Robert Emrich appointed Sarah DuFresne, controller in finance, as he new Treasurer effective March 1 as Lutz’s replacement.

Approval was granted to the revisions of the sexual misconduct and gender discrimination policy and procedures for the college. A special presentation was given by the Mike Finelli on behalf of the Delta College Home Builders Association student chapter.

Finelli, associate professor of residential construction, helps

run the student club at Delta which is sponsored by the Home Builders Association in Saginaw.

The club has partnered with the association in order for students to earn hands-on learning experience before earning leaving Delta’s program.

“The connections that the students can make with the people in the associations can be very valuable,” says Finelli.

The Board ended the night with a closed session to discuss faculty salary negotiations. The next board meeting will be held on main campus Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. following the dinner meeting at 5:30 p.m.

If you watched “The Amanda Show” or “Drake & Josh” on Nickelodeon – even just one time – then you know who Drake Bell is.

What you might not know, is that Bell has been changing his identity from “Drake Bell, that guy from Nickelodeon” to “Drake Bell, pop-rock star.” While defining himself as one of Nickelodeon’s favorite TV actors, Bell was also pursuing a passion for music. Bell wrote the iconic “Drake & Josh” theme song and released two albums under his own name. After “Drake & Josh” ended, it would be 8 years before Bell’s rockabilly concept album “Ready Steady Go!” came out in 2014.

Now Bell will be coming to Saginaw as part of his See It Stripped tour, where he will be performing stripped-down, acoustic versions of his recent songs. Bell is performing at Counter Culture on March 19 with supporting artists from his tour, Tryon and Joe Kirk from The Voice, as well as local artist Mark Duhaime of the band Forest Green.

“It’s exciting because it’s this chance to interact with a thing from your past as it exists now. It’s a spectacle of how these things we used to know, like Nickelodeon

stars, change over time. It’s this event that’s equally nostalgic and modern,” says Champagne.

Bell’s See It Stripped Tour is another national touring act that has recently come to Saginaw because of Counter Culture, such as Citizen, Sorority Noise or Joe Hertler. The tour will also stop in Lansing and Ferndale along the way, but Benjamin Champagne is excited for the press in Saginaw.

“It’s most likely going to do well, so the agency that booked Drake Bell might send more shows this way, It will give Saginaw some attention and a media spotlight for the day,” says Champagne.

The importance of Black History Month HALEY NAGEL To celebrate Black History Month in America, it’s important to understand the origin.

Carter Godwin Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of African Life and History in 1915 – the first organization with intentions to promote studying black history in schools and to acknowledge black excellence, instead of solely white.

“If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition,” said Woodson.

According to Time, Black History Month started as an extension of Black History Week in 1926 (officially recognized

by U.S. government in 1976) by means of the father of black history, Carter Godwin Woodson.

Woodson’s push for change was undoubtedly effective, initiating a national observance of black history month, not only recognized, but celebrated with admiration every year in the month of February.

Americans celebrate throughout the month with luncheons, conferences, commemorations, quiz bowl and more. Colleges and universities often schedule entertaining, themed events with intentions to observe black history. Common campus events include lectures, film screenings, discussions and book drives. Many colleges have unique events related to the institution’s traditions and history – such as Howard University of Washington.

According to Campus Lately’s website, the University hosts an annual Bison Market on Feb. 23 that allows students to showcase music, food, art and more.

This February, at Delta, we are honoring those who came before us and we are recognizing those who are doing great things today.

In efforts to create an awareness and educate students about black history, students at Delta are encouraged to participate in trivia games, “Living Inspiration” speeches and “Human Library” interviews.

While these events are aimed to educate, they also bring black students together in the process. Delta has a strong black community already, and national commemorations in the month of February inspire students to appreciate it that much more.

Some might need to feel a sense of belonging at school more than others, so it’s vital to always keep moral strong within the community through dedicated events and social gatherings.

It’s important, not just for the black community, but all members of society that identify with minority groups to feel accepted. In the United States, there are over 50 recognized history months dedicated to this fraction of the population.

To just name a few: Hispanic heritage, LGBTQ, IrishAmerican heritage and women’s history. Each history and awareness month deserves to be equally supported; great pride is taken ensuring celebration to the fullest potential.

Our lives as individuals of all backgrounds and race are fluid.

The hope is that people are able to unite to reflect, learn, laugh and grow. After all, America is a melting pot. Regardless of heritage and identity, we are all human.

Eating with the Collegiate: Midland Brewing Company

Collegiate Rating: The Midland Brewing Company was established in May 2017 and has become a popular watering hole in Midland. The rustic atmosphere matched the antique decor and left us expecting a quality, home-style meal.

The staff: Our waitress, clad in the red flannel uniform that so effectively matched the decor, came to the table with a positive energy. Her knowledge in the homebrews of the restaurant was impressive as was her attentiveness to the table. The other waitstaff was also helpful with clearing away our clean plates and providing us with takeout containers in a relatively quick time.

The food: We started off with the $14 monster-of-a-pretzel that left us satisfied but questioning all that we know about a pretzel. Was it really what it’s advertised as or nothing more than glorified bread? We’ll let you decide that conundrum for yourself, but something that cannot be denied was the quality of the beer cheese served alongside it.

Each staff member ordered something different. For Kevin, The Salty Dog seemed simple but sounded amazing and was not a disappointment. The spicy mustard wasn’t overpoweringly hot and added another level to the sandwich that wouldn’t have been there if it were a regular or mild mustard.

After sampling several of

their beers, Kevin found that his favorite of the night was the Isle Royale Cream Ale. It was almost too hoppy of a light beer for his taste, but the creamy flavor complemented his meal, which was the saving grace.

Aubrie and Jessica chose the chicken sandwich, one without bacon and the other without grilled onions. The bacon was thick and perfectly cooked, not deep fried, which is a rarity to find at restaurants nowadays.

One thing everyone could agree upon was how amazing the hand-cut French fries were.

It’s a $2 upcharge for the side, but you won’t regret it. The food can be considered a tad pricey for college students with the majority of our bills equaling $20 without tip.

Overall: The atmosphere on a Friday night was very loud to start off with, so don’t plan on having any lengthy conversations there when it’s busy. The size of the restaurant was also an issue. On a busy night, weaving in between tables to get to yours felt like a maze, and the parking was nonexistent at dinnertime.

The Collegiate recommends Midland Brewing Company for everyone, especially if you’re over the age of 21. For beer lovers, this is the place to go for a burger and a variety of brews.

For liquor lovers, you many want to wait another month for trying it out, because they don’t have their liquor license yet. Expect to be greeted with a warm welcome and a wide variety of options.

Clubs of Delta College present to students on campus MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – For students at Delta College, there are many ways to be involved in the community outside of the classroom, thanks to student clubs and organizations.

On Thursday, Feb. 15, several of these clubs organized in the hallway and presented themselves to students on campus for Clubs and Organizations Day, in the hopes of gaining interest and some new members. More than 12 clubs had tables set up for the event.

The Economics Club was one of the clubs present at the event, with Vice President Will Nolan representing the club.

“We discuss economic policies, and how they’re going to affect the real world,” says Nolan. “If we see an article that interests us, we discuss it during our meetings. It’s kind of a fun club to have discussions in.”

Nolan also says that the Economics Club has had a positive impact on his life as a student.

“It’s certainly gotten me more involved,” he says. “It’s increased my knowledge about how many clubs Delta offers.”

In addition, student Ashley Hupfer was at the event to represent a newly restarted club called the American Sign

Language Club, which seeks to “promote accessibility, and immerse people in deaf culture and deaf awareness.”

“We haven’t done much yet, but we’re going to go on field trips and have regular coffee chats where we sign with our voices off, just to promote awareness,” says Hupfer.

Hupfer passed out flyers to students with the club’s mission, as well as a sign language chart for the alphabet. Students who are interested in joining can contact Trent Wade, assistant professor in foreign languages, at trentwade@delta.edu.

The Information Technology & Security (ITS) club also was present on Clubs and Organizations Day. The ITS club exists as a resource for students who are into Information Security and Computer Technology.

“We have regular monthly meetings, we regularly consume donuts and we try to educate our clients on routine maintenance,” says Amy Conrad, the club president.

The ITS Club has been running the Free PC Repair Clinic for many years, where students and faculty can have their computers brought in for troubleshooting, repairs and so

forth. They can be followed on Facebook at “Delta College Free PC Repair Clinic” for upcoming clinics.

“The hands-on experience has been fantastic,” says Conrad.

“That’s one of the greatest benefits of this club, as well as the fellowship. The opportunity to hone in on my skill gives me confidence for my future.”

Love Your Melon, the Honors Society, the Astronomy Club, the Delta College Military Association and the Environmental Club were among other organizations presenting to students on that day. “[My time as a club member has] gotten me to understand the inner workings of Delta outside of the classroom,” says Don Weismiller, president of the Delta College Military Association.

“It allows me to meet people other than my professors that I otherwise would not have interacted with.”

Local theater troupe, Passion Theatre, brought a Pulitzer Prize–winning play to Midland and gave a performance that showed exactly why “Next to Normal” deserved the award. “‘Next to Normal’ has been our dream show for this group since I was 16. We finally decided to go through with it, and it has been the most difficult, educational and rewarding experience,” says Aidan Montgomery, founder and director of Passion Theatre.

“Next to Normal” is a modern musical that has been said to have “expanded the scope of subject matter for musicals.” The play is focused around the struggles of a family dealing with mental illness and the difficulties that come along with it, like grief, suicide, drug abuse, medical ethics and the hidden troubles of residential life.

“This show has been the most successful for Passion Theatre. The turnout for all the shows has been above what we hoped for. There have been

Experimental is defined as “involving a radically new and innovative style.” Experimental art pushes boundaries, breaks them and redefines what we can think of as art.

“Experimental art is the highest form of art. I get this high off of humanity when I see people going into these places that have never been explored before. It’s like the human spirit, it’s almost the same as discovering fire.

It pushes art and communication and ourselves,” says Benjamin Champagne, owner of Counter Culture.

On a chilly February night in Saginaw, Counter Culture became a venue for artistic explorations that aren’t normally seen in the area. The roster for the night featured an electronic doom noise artist, a film accompanied with a performance piece by the artist who made it and an avant-garde band.

“One of Counter Culture’s missions is to try and inspire people. That’s what experimental art is. It’s pure courage and inspiration, it can get people thinking

verbal sobs every night, which has been a personal victory for me. All the feedback has been phenomenal, so many people have said they’ve been impacted by the show,” says Montgomery.

The musical was brought to by life by a small but talented production team. The cast was made up of six local thespians who had spent a total of six weeks working together from first rehearsal to the opening night of the show. The musical numbers spanned genres from operatic love ballads to fast rock songs that grappled with depression with the brilliant execution from the live pit orchestra setting the tone for them.

“The progress that these people have made, from first rehearsal to now, is astounding. There were times I wasn’t sure we could pull this off, because it’s a big production for a local theater troupe. Now I’m watching them and sobbing through the second act because of how they were able to take the raw, emotional dynamic of this family and bring it life. It’s so powerful,” says Wren Hayes, interim stage director.

The stage set was purposefully minimal to concentrate the audience’s focus on the passionate performances given by the cast and the relationships between their characters. The different ways that the stage director utilized the sparse set to create a wide array of settings was a masterclass example of “less is more.” The

Experimental art is partly defined by its nature to oppose and question current conventions. This allows to tackle issues that other art may not be able to and it allows it to take it on in ways that conventional art doesn’t allow. This is a large part of the ideology Amanda Lee brings to her performance art, particularly the piece she performed at Counter Culture titled Survivor’s Guilt.

“My work addresses the specific juxtapositions that exist only in American culture. Every day all but a few Americans are faced with an onslaught of war, terror, attacks on other countries, threats to their healthcare, and police brutality to name a few. In the face of all this violence and fear, we still somehow manage to go to work, to have hobbies, and do things for fun. Sometimes, we cannot hold it together. We cry when mass shootings happen. We have panic attacks and are not sure why. My video, sound, and body performance are all meant to address the ways we ‘hold it together’,” says Lee. These efforts to challenge the norm have difficulties getting attention from the mainstream, but it is still a crucial part in changing the mainstream even if it goes largely unnoticed in the public eye. “It’s been a life-changing experience.

I’ve never been in a play that manages to portray such a serious and relatable topic in such an effective way,” says Alena Ramos, one of the cast members of the show.

Saturday, Feb. 10 was the last night of the weekend-long run of shows for the production, and the auditorium was near capacity with attendees filling the seats. Over 100 tickets were sold, and Passion Theatre’s final performance of the weekend received a standing ovation from cheering audience members.

“I’ve never had this many good things to say about a local theater production.

It blew me away, it was an incredible performance,” says showgoer Amanda Thomas.

“Places like Counter Culture is key because where else would experimental bands and artists get to exist? It’s a stepping stone between making music in your bedroom and getting to perform in bigger cities or bigger venues,” says Rosin.

Innovation and ongoing experimentation is necessary to keep art changing so that it stays relevant to our ever-shifting society and cultural identity. Art and music is a vital part in reflecting the current state of the world we live in, along with our interests and concerns. Pushing art to go in new directions is what keeps that reflection accurate.

‘It’s not too cold for shorts’ KEVIN LAZZARO BAY CITY – The independent film festival Hell’s Half Mile hosted a fantastic set of short films on Friday, Feb. 9 at the State Theatre in Bay City.

The films of the event, “It’s not too cold for shorts,” ranged in genre from comedy to drama. There were also several animations screened at the event. All of the films were amazingly well done, but the films that ushered in the largest reactions from the crowd were: “Le Gouffre,” an animated adventure of two travelers endeavouring to cross a gulf with the help of some local townspeople. Audience members were on the edge of their seats waiting to see if the two friends would be able to make it across the enormous crevasse. I don’t know if I was just being overly emotional that night, but I almost teared up a little bit, watching these two struggle.

“Okay, Call Me Back,” a comedy about a phone message from a woman looking for some “company.”

People laughed at the analogies on screen depicting phallic fruits and vegetables being inserted into yonic produce. The short film was hilarious and had a level of realism that the audience clearly related with, as could be noticed through the sound of their laughter.

“Swipe Right,” a comedy about a woman in the world of Tinder, but with a little more accidental manslaughter.

This was the best short out of the set of films by far, with great visual quality and also digital and practical effects Illustrated by David Taylor that stood out from the rest. The acting skills also seemed superior in this film, but that might be more of a personal opinion. Raucous laughter flooded the theater during this film. It was filled with ridiculous situation after ridiculous

situation. I loved it.

These films were great, and it makes it even better knowing the amount of arduous work that was put into each one, since they were all produced by independent film creators. The only short film that definitely received larger funding was “Le Gouffre,” which was funded through Kickstarter, which could be seen by the credit given in the scrolling end-credit sequence. The animation was done amazingly because of this funding. I was taken aback, for sure.

The films that are screened are either submitted locally or are recommendations from filmmakers and experts.

“A few of the films screened at Hell’s Half Mile last year and created enough buzz that we wanted to include them again” said Don Hessell, film programming manager at Hell’s Half Mile.

If you missed out on the independent films at the Hell’s Half Mile Film Festival, then “It’s not too cold for shorts,” among other events, is a way that you could catch up and also support local filmmakers. If you missed out on the events so far this year, there are more to come.

High expectations for the Pioneers for final season JOE THORNTON With the Delta men’s basketball team having a measly nine games remaining, we have to take a look back at the beginning of the season and how we got to where we are now.

When talking with Carlos McMath, Delta’s men’s basketball head coach, he established at the beginning of the season that his team loves to compete. If you’ve watched the Pioneers at all this season, you can see how passionate and fired up this team is when they take to the court.

McMath has established the goal of this team being one that is great defensively both early and often.

Although this is a team where many players love offense, nobody knew how they would stack up against opposing teams defensively. Regardless, the Pioneers have established themselves as a dominant, defensive force.

Averaging almost 30 defensive rebounds, 11 steals and five blocks in a game, these Pioneers have developed a cohesive, defensive mind.

After losing multiple players last season, nobody knew what type of team we would have this year, but the only thing that matters is that it’s a team of winners. McMath outlined his aspirations to put this team in the position to play their best basketball in February and March, and that’s what this team is getting back to. Going undefeated early and then on a slump has tested the Pioneers’ mettle, making them stronger as a unit.

This is a prideful team, just as McMath saw them to be since the beginning, and as the postseason draws nearer their anticipation builds. It’s been a roller coaster ride of a season, but we’ll see who the true champions are during the postseason.

Lady Pioneers gain momentum near playoffs JOE THORNTON “We’re the spoilers and the underdogs. The ones that are here to ruin everyone else’s fun. All we’re playing for is to crush everyone else’s dream. No worries, no stresses, we just gotta go out and play basketball.”

Delta College’s women’s basketball head coach Shonda Long has gotten her team under the reins and hopes to stay hot as they progress toward the playoffs. With her team being underdogs all season long, they don’t expect any different with the postseason fast approaching. Long is reminding her players of their opportunity for redemption and hoping that they can seize the moment.

“The second half of the season is a fresh start. We’re getting rematches against the teams we played earlier this year, and I reminded them to finish strong. Every conference game we lost this season was by 10 points or less, and this is our chance at redemption against those teams,” explains Long.

Long has seen her players grow this year, both on and off the court. Their evolution as both players and people through physical, mental and emotional refinement has helped the Lady Pioneers to peak at the right time.

“I firmly believe we’re playing our best basketball right now, and that comes back to our players evolving. Harmany Williams has grown immensely as a leader and has enhanced her presence on the court. Marisa Morton has overcome the odds, coming back from a PCL tear earlier this season, putting up 40 points in a recent game. Lastly, Star Farriell has been an essential asset coming off the bench, working hard to improve all season long,” states Long.

As the season’s end draws ever closer, every game matters as the Lady Pioneers shoot for the highest seed possible. For those who are unfamiliar with the playoff process, it is heavily influenced by the March Madness NCAA tournament. With Delta’s current record, the highest possible seed they could get for the postseason would be third seed, and that’s where Long has set the bar.

“Even though every game matters, Schoolcraft and Macomb are the most important, as they’re the current first and second seeds. Even in these important games, it’s vital not to overthink anything. I’m stressing to my players that they just have to relax and should trust in the game plan,” says Long.

Award shows need to “step up” their game with inclusivity Music is one of America’s biggest diversifiers.

One is able to express different values, perceptions and feelings with simple combinations of different chords. There’s a sound for every person, an album for every emotion.

The music industry is evolving, along with singers’ and songwriters’ viewpoints of political and social ideals. So, can anyone explain why men are still dominating award shows? We’ve already seen movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up sparking awareness for the issues we are facing, but if this past 2018 Grammy Awards ceremony is any indication of where we are in the movement, we have a long way to go.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards show was so male-dominated that the new hashtag #GrammysSoMale started trending. Alessia Cara was awarded Best New Artist on air, but that’s the last female winner who we can recall was presented with the honorable trophy. The way the Grammy Awards’ categories are structured, there’s an obvious correlation why men are dominating in the nomination department.

Let us not forget the notorious statement from Recording Academy President Neil Portnow, when he said women needed to “step up” if they want to be “more creatively involved in the music business.”

Newsflash, sire: Women have been trying to break strides in the music industry, not to mention every other industry, in the public eye. Women are striving for equal representation and opportunity, which have been ongoing struggles for centuries.

How is it that a performer like Kesha took the stage and inspired thousands with her hit “Praying” – which is about surviving sexual abuse, mind you – was beaten by Ed Sheeran’s song that was quite literally about admiring a woman’s body?

Don’t get us wrong, there are male artists who deserve recognition for the work that they produce.

Like the current wave of feminism’s disapproval of misandry, we are not trying to discredit the art that men create. Rather, we simply want equal representation for women and people of color in award ceremonies.

Women are breaking through barriers, singing about issues that need to be heard, to which listeners can relate. Women are trying to help heal sexism’s wounds with their words, and it’s about time they get recognition. It is time for award ceremonies to start listening to what women are demanding and start including women and people of color in the categories they create. It’s time to join the movement and start giving women the respect they inherently deserve.

What are your thoughts of men dominating women in award shows, like the Grammys?

Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows, but what he tweets can be very interesting, to say the least.

Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me:

{ President Trump was a little less than pleased that he hasn’t seen the media publish an article about his increased approval rating. The Rasmussen Reports has a poll that measures voters’ approval of Trump’s job

performance. Good news: He didn’t lie. His approval rating is currently at 49 percent. The interesting aspect of this tweet is the fact that Trump can’t be satisfied enough with his approval ratings increasing (which, honestly, I don’t understand how they can go up, but that’s just me.) He’s being salty that there’s no news article being written about his success.

What? He discredits the media at least 10 times a day and the one time there isn’t a story for him to disapprove of he gets upset?

That’s not how it works, sir. Does that sound childish to anyone else, or is it just me?

Maybe people are still talking about “Russia, Russia, Russia” because there’s a reason to. And you being president is not the sole reason that jobs would be on the rise, Mr. Trump. I’d also like to see what information is backing up your “rising wages,” because your tweet quite conveniently neglects to mention who’s reaping the benefits of higher wages.

So, I’m a little confused on this little number. Trump complaining about the “old days” and how news and the stock market are correlated has got me wanting the answer to one question: Why exactly are

you blaming the news for the stock market? I understand that Trump is a businessperson first (not sure if he could be classified as a good businessperson, but I digress), so it makes sense that he’s invested in the stock market, because I’m sure he’s got a butt-load of money circulating through the system. But come on, the news cannot be blamed for every single thing that happens in this country. Do I need to repeat that for the people in the back?

In this tweet, Trump is referring to the bill that was

recently passed to increase military spending. I have friends and family members in the military, and I want them to have everything that they need, so the bill is not the reason that this tweet is bothersome to me.

Trump really can’t get along with the Democratic Party to even appreciate the role they played in getting this bill passed. Why is it that our government has to be so divided that it’s no longer enough to put the interests of American citizens first? Is being involved in politics nothing but a contest of who can get the most votes? Is that really what it’s come to? From this tweet, it seems like that mentality isn’t too far off from the truth, and frankly, it’s quite disappointing.

AUBRIE SMITH But even the simple bio and the kind-heartedness of my profile couldn’t stop the nasty Tinder crowd from coming out from behind their profile pictures.

Howdy! I see you’ve decided to hop on the polyamorous wagon and keep a tight rein on your many lovers. Stupendous, as long as those lovely sister wives or brother husbands consent!

First things first, fellow lover, we humans are far from monogamous. We crave many a lover at once, often striving to quench this everlasting, sensual thirst.

Along the way, one may come across lovers of all sorts, which strengthens our libidos rather than repressing it. Keep in mind, certain lovers are off limits, though that’s for another time and place!

Not to sound too absurdist, but at the core of humanity’s heart lies a banshee. This banshee, whom we shall call Judy, screams eternally. How someone hears this shriek, however, determines one’s affinity for love. Some may hear Judy say, “Little lover, swaddled in bonhomie. Go forth on this odyssey and tell me what you see. Monogamy is thy word, my songbird.”

Others have claimed to hear, “Polygamist! Begone, lest I call the nutritionist!”

OK, maybe Judy isn’t an expert in love, but she makes a good point! I just hope she doesn’t call the nutritionist…

Sharing is caring, is it not? This is one of my favorite socialist doctrines, said ever so eloquently by Mrs. Karl Marx herself. Let us not forget this, patrons of amour! If you indeed have many a lover, then those whom you love should love as well! This is where I begin to criticize Mormons, so bear with me, or close your eyes, whichever works. How does a man really think he can have as many wives as he wishes and not let any of them love others or even each other? Hmm, sounds like someone didn’t share his toys with others when he was little!

I say, if sister wives and brother husbands are here, they might as well be queer! All of these members of the same gender or sex living under one roof and making love only to one average-looking man? Yikes!

Straight people are wild.

Love is love, my friends. Do not use it to exploit others, though. Please. I beg of thee.

At this point in my life, two of my more serious relationships have originated on Tinder. That’s not necessarily something I’m proud of, but it’s become common and more accepted within this time period; though, I still feel the need to make up a cute meeting story for the ‘rents.

Tinder, or other common dating sites/apps, can be a really great way to get back out there. Since our generation has started staying in with our BuzzFeed and Netflix, we’ve stopped meeting people in grocery stores and started meeting them them way we consume the rest of our media – online.

The downside: Holy poop, there are a lot of weirdos out there.

Here’s my current Tinder experience: I’ve had the long bio, all-about-me vibe before, so I decided to reach for a simpler, more classic vibe this time. Anyone who knows me knows how important my cats are to me. To throw out some “Office” and “Friends” references: I’m Monica-clean, Angela as a cat mom, Pam as a wife – or something much catchier and less cliche.

There are certainly downfalls for being the straight male on Tinder too – bots, bots, bots, bots, bots (in rhythm of “Shots” by LMFAO featuring Lil Jon).

Whether you’re Tinder-ing away to get over someone, under someone or just to cure some cases of boredom, take caution as you swipe away. The only thing you’re guaranteed to find is all of the Tri-Cities’ pervs and weirdos.

Can you name that tune?

Community members participate in Governor’s Corners Taproom monthly trivia night.

Do you know your music trivia? Like listening to vinyl? Enjoy cold beer and homemade chips? Governor’s Quarters Taproom, located at 1304 S. Wenona St. in Bay City, is the place for you this Thursday.

The monthly “Can You Name That Tune?” draws teams of up to six that pay $1 each to play for a chance to win cash prizes. The Jan. 25 contest drew about 100 people, which organizers say is the largest turnout so far.

The music trivia was presented by Lightning Licks Vinyl Preservation Society and was hosted by Jess McQuarter, co-owner of Electric Kitsch record store in Bay City.

“Our intention on hosting trivia every month is to bring the community together in a way that is enjoyable for everyone included,” says McQuarter. “I love being around people with music knowledge, and playing it on vinyl just gives it that extra something that you don’t see very often these days.”

Trivia consisted of five rounds that were all different kinds of genres: “Heaven or Hell,” “Jazz,” “Movie Themes,” “‘80s Ladies” and “Under the Covers.” Within each round, five songs were played, and teams earned

one point for listing the artist and another for naming the song, for a total of up to 10 points per round.

Participants enjoyed the musical memories as much as the competition.

“Though we didn’t win, I had such a great time” said Laurie Wiechec, a trivia contestant. “I haven’t heard some of these songs since the ‘80s, so it was super nostalgic.”

Every month, teams that come in second and third place overall get to pick one of the themes for the upcoming month. Last month “‘80s Ladies” and “Movies” were special categories; the Feb. 22 special theme is “Disco.”

The 100 people at the January event was the biggest turnout they have ever had, according to McQuarter. Besides more than two dozen beers on tap, the bar, which opened in 2014, also serves a variety of appetizers, sandwiches and entrees.

February’s “Can You Name That Tune?” will be hosted on Feb. 22 at Governor’s Quarters.

Registration will again start at 6:30 p.m. and trivia will start at 7 p.m.
