A Carnival of Confections

A staple event of the Delta College calendar is rolling around once again. A Chocolate Afair is an annual event beneftting those in the Possible Dream Program. The event ofers high school and middle school students the opportunity to connect with business owners, other students in the program and alumni of the program. But the main attraction? An assortment of extravagantly decorated desserts.
Rebecca Barber, a member of the Delta College Foundation, spoke to the importance of the event.
“It’s the only source of funding for the Possible Dream Program, so it’s very important,” said Barber.
Barber has been involved in every single fundraiser since 1991, dedicating 34 years of service to making sure the students have every opportunity to take advantage of what the Possible Dream Program has to ofer.
Enrollment in the Possible Dream Program begins in sixth or seventh grade. Students are provided cultural and educational opportunities that broaden their horizons and exposes them to college life while giving them the
opportunity to explore higher education. Those in the program receive a $2,000 per year scholarship if they choose Delta College for higher education and are enrolled full-time for two years.
The Chocolate Afair has tons of volunteers that come out to help. Barber elaborated on how community-driven the event is and how everyone from community members to family members of students in the program help however they can.
“We have some students that volunteer. We have staf that volunteer because I have about 40 people who help cut the desserts, so we do have volunteers that way. Some are students, some are staf, some are from the community and some are grandparents and parents of Possible Dream students.”
Barber expressed.
The event itself features live music, tons of dessert and lots of conversation.
Even after 30 years, The Chocolate Afair remains an event circled on patrons calendars. Whether they attend to socialize, listen to the music or fll themselves on sweets, fun is had all around.
