Can the Roethke House be saved?

A house on Gratiot Road in Saginaw that once belonged to the uncle of poet Theodore Roethke is at risk of being demolished.

The Friends of Theodore Roethke board of trustees met in October 2018 and voted one to five to demolish the structure located at 1759 Gratiot — also known as the “stone house” — for financial reasons.

“I am hopeful that the board will reconsider their vote,” says Anne Ramsford, president of the foundation.

“We haven’t had the money in 20 years to open it, but at the same time we haven’t scoured around for [...] structure grants.”

The stone house is currently in need of serious remodeling and repairs, including the roof and back porch.

Ramsford also says the house may be currently infested with raccoons.

Ramsford further elaborates that most of the grants written for Friends of Theodore Roethke were for activities and events at Roethke’s childhood home — also known as the “white house” — which is right next door to the stone house and is not at risk.

The MLive website reported Feb. 3 that the board voted at the same meeting to seek a $100,000 endowment

to fund the stone house’s demolition and to redevelop the property into a multipurpose outdoor area with an amphitheater, garden and a parking area.

“I think it's a shame that the house might be torn down,” says Jeff Vande Zande, English professor at Delta.

“It's a rich part of the Roethke legacy, but also Saginaw's legacy. The house really is quite stunning to look at.”

Ramsford speculates what else could be done with the stone house if it were to be renovated instead of demolished. “[If] we had a house that was viable and working, then we could do more things for education for kids and [...] our language camp in the summer,” states Ramsford. “We do things in the white house but [...] it’s lots of wear and tear.”

Theodore Roethke was born in Saginaw in 1908 and attended school at Arthur Hill. He later went on to write the Pulitzer-winning book of poetry “The Waking” (1953), and also taught at several universities including his alma mater, Michigan State in East Lansing.

Roethke died in 1963 and is currently interred at Oakwood Cemetery.

Ramsford states that some english professors at Delta have taken students to the Roethke house to write poetry on site.

“Some member of the Roethke Board of Trustees imagine the space being used for writing conferences, visiting writers, and even community mental health outreach,” says Vande Zande. “Students should care because of what the house could mean for the community.”

Delta professor highlights success in developmental education Michael Piwowarski • News Editor

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Did you know that four out of 10 Delta College students are below college level in reading, writing and/or math?

Students who apply to Delta College have to take a course placement test to determine what levels of reading, writing and math they are at and which classes they should start with. If a student places low enough in one of these categories, he or she will need to take developmental education classes in order to pursue their major.

During a presentation at the Tuesday, Feb. 5, board of trustees meeting, Kristin Cornelius, associate professor in English at Delta, discussed the college’s efforts in developmental education.

Cornelius, who herself teaches developmental courses in reading and writing, continues to show great enthusiasm toward helping these students with developmental needs to navigate through their college educations and achieve their goals.

“We know that our students have lives beyond our walls at Delta. One of the things that we want to make sure we’re doing is helping our students every way we possibly can, and so we want to

start helping our students as soon as they get into our process into Delta College. We want to help them while they’re obviously taking our courses, but we also want to help them beyond [when they move into college level classes],” says Cornelius.

Fortunately, Delta has largely succeeded in giving those students the quality education they deserve.

Further statistics from Cornelius’s presentation show that the success rate among Delta’s developmental education students is higher than the national average, which is 50 percent. Delta’s students have a 63.7 percent success rate in reading, 71.7 percent in writing and 68.47 percent in math.

“Just knowing that [...] Delta College is a place where you have a little bit smaller classes, where you have professors who care about you and are interested in your success… we find that that does a lot to pull students in who really are looking at trying to build some of those foundational skills or maybe returning to college for the first time and just want to be able to start with feeling like they’re a little bit more sure of their academic abilities,” says Cornelius.

In addition, Delta has maintained high retention rates among developmental education students, with

a rate of 86.3 percent in developmental language and a rate of 73.4 percent in developmental math.

Cornelius also noted that recent efforts, which were initiated fall 2018, are underway to streamline and redesign math classes at Delta. The goal is to allow students to complete developmental math coursework in one semester and complete collegelevel math classes within one year of enrolling, reducing the average amount of time to complete a math sequence from 1.5 years to one year.

“One of the things that we’re always doing with all of our programs [...] is making sure that we have our students on the best path forward. [...] So, we redesign from time to time how our classes look,” states Cornelius.

Looking ahead, Cornelius is hopeful that Delta’s continued efforts will attract more students and cause the retention and success rates to grow even higher. “[One way to increase retention] is to make sure,” say Cornelius. “Are we moving our students through as fast as we can? [...] Again, always looking at any way that we change our courses. Are we still being true to that high quality instruction that we know that our students need and [...] deserve?”

First, there is the romantic Valentine’s Day shopping season, a time for retailers to make big bucks off of flowers, cards and fancy chocolates. At the same time is President’s Day shopping season, a time to... buy a new mattress?

If you visit Art Van’s website in the weeks leading up to President’s Day, you are greeted with big, colorful blurbs about President’s Day discounts where you can save up to 65 percent off of furniture, mattresses and other items.

Likewise, if you log on to the websites for Mattress Firm, Godwin’s Furniture, Tempurpedic or any other websites for well-known mattress dealers, you’ll find President’s Day sales bragging about how much you can save if you take advantage of their deals now.

But now comes the million-dollar question: why is President’s Day such a big day for sales, particularly among furniture and mattress retailers? Or first

of all, what is President’s Day, exactly?

Despite what some may think at first, President’s Day isn’t really a holiday celebrating all of the U.S. presidents… just one — George Washington. It started as a celebration of his birthday, but in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, the holiday is always observed on a Monday, so this year’s date is Feb. 18.

So why do retailers like to have sales for the holiday that celebrates Washington’s birthday?

Jill Thompson from sleepadvisor.org, a website which provides mattress reviews, wrote Feb. 5 that since customers typically get a tax refund check at the same time as President’s Day, they will have more money to spend. Mattress retailers therefore take advantage of this by offering discounts on their inventory to get them to spend.

“It also helps that this influx of cash and free time occurs during a holiday that typically isn’t accompanied by gift-giving, allowing people to spend a little more on their own needs,” Thompson further writes.

Mattress stores tend to have big sales on many other federal holidays as well, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Memorial Day, in particular, is an ideal time for retailers to sell off their old inventory, because they will need to make room for new year models on their showrooms.

However, creditdonkey.com advises that new stock already starts to arrive in stores as early as February/March, so stores will still feel a little pressure to sell off their old inventory at this time, which also helps to explain why President’s Day sales are so prevalent among mattress retailers.

So if you’re shopping for a new mattress and don’t mind if you get last year’s model instead of the brand new, President’s Day may not be such a bad time to go out shopping.

took a complaint regarding money stolen from a lost purse. A student reported losing her purse in the lower commons area on February 5, 2019. An unidentified person turned the purse in to Public Safety. When the student recovered her purse, she discovered that a small sum of money ($7 or $8) was missing from the purse. Nothing else was missing.

Delta College Public Safety responded to one traffic crash report in the parking lot.

Radio station raises more than $40K for Covenant Kids Michael Piwowarski • News Editort

WIOG, a Top-40 radio station in Bay City serving the Tri City area, hosted its first annual “radiothon” for Covenant Kids, the pediatric care fund of the Covenant Healthcare Foundation.

From Thursday, Feb. 14, through Friday, Feb. 15, the radiothon aired live on the station daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Covenant Kids stated in a Facebook post Friday that a total of $42,700 was raised at the radiothon.

The radiothon, sponsored

by Mike Young Buick GMC of Frankenmuth and Catholic Federal Credit Union, gave WIOG’s listeners an opportunity

to support Covenant Kids with monetary gifts and enter for chances to win prizes as well.

As stated on their website, money in the Covenant Kids fund goes toward enhancing the care of Covenant Healthcare patients under the age of 18, and that more than $1 million has been raised since 2010.

If you missed the radiothon, Covenant Kids still hosts an annual spring telethon, which will air on WNEM TV-5 April 27 this year, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Apex Legends rises to battle royale royalty

I went into Apex Legends, the world’s latest trend-chasing battle royale game, with a bit of baggage. Riding off the heels of 2016’s Titanfall 2, the game aims to match the high bar set by its spiritual predecessor, all while building off the successful formula of Fortnite. Initially, I was doubtful; in the process of fitting in with every battle royale game on the market, Apex Legends seemed set to remove everything that made it a Titanfall game, cutting out the titular titans (giant robots that the player could commandeer) and eliminating the myriad movement options such as double jumps and wall running. It felt extremely counter intuitive to remove

all the advances Titanfall introduced.

Despite these changes, there’s an obvious question: is Apex Legends worth playing?

Riding off of the coattails of the current boom in battle royale games, Apex Legends follows many trends set by its contemporaries, Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).

From the overwhelming amount of players, in this case 20 teams of three, to the luck-based system in place for finding whatever equipment your team will use,

Apex Legends feels, at first, like an easy cash grab fueled by the rise in popularity of this newly minted genre.

Where Apex Legends stands out, however, is it’s foundation — working off of the systems built in Titanfall 2. The combat in this game, bolstered by high mobility and quick, twitch-reaction style shooting, changes the pace dramatically from the rest of the battle royale pack.

Even though they removed a number of key features from Titanfall 2, they succeed in splitting off dramatically from the slow pace of PUBG and the simplified mechanics of Fortnite.

Apex Legends harkens back to classic FPS games such as Doom and Quake, where quick reflexes, technical skill and blazing speed where the name of the game. Backed up by Titanfall 2’s amazing controls, everything from running, jumping, shooting, sliding around and even aiming down sights feels significantly better than any other battle royale game on the market.

Considering just how good it feels, it’s also amazing to consider the price point of Apex Legends; clocking in at the low, low

price of FREE, the game picks up another standard of its battle royale contemporary Fortnite, trading a price tag for microtransactions. While I’m a little bitter about a quarter of the current characters being locked behind a pay/playtime wall, it’s hard to feel too angry considering how much content is available from the get go.

First impressions on Apex Legends tended to have quite a negative slant.

Since its abrupt release, the game has been accused of many things, from killing off the development of Titanfall 3 to being a lazy cash grab. The generic aesthetic and presentation may not do much to disquade dissenters, but the true core of Apex Legends rests within its gameplay. The game is polished to perfection, shining like a brilliant diamond amongst its battle royale rivals.

With stronger gameplay than both Fortnite and PUBG, I’m excited to see the growth Apex Legends. As the greatest battle royale game on the market, I can only hope the game grows to match Fortnite’s titanic rise, and does not simply fizzle out due to its lesser elements.

Governor Whitmer brings Michigan into US Climate Alliance Zach Parfeniuk • Reporter

At a press conference in Lansing on Feb. 4, 2019, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced her intention to join the US Climate Alliance for a greener planet.

State governments formed this agreement in June 2017 as a rebuke of the decision to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement, the international framework from the United Nations on controlling greenhouse gases and carbon footprints.

The alliance is essentially a policy statement; governors who join the alliance agree to pursue policies that advance the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Some of these policies include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, pursuing clean and renewable energy to reduce carbon pollution and reporting their progress towards these initiatives to the international (which will be national for the US Climate Alliance) community.

Michigan became the 20th state to join the climate alliance, shortly followed by Wisconsin on Feb. 12 after a statement from Governor Tony Evers. The states in the alliance now represent around 47 percent of the US population, and over half of the national GDP (Gross Domestic Product) at around 10 trillion dollars.

Whitmer also issued an executive order, restructuring the Department of Environmental Quality and transforming it into the Department of Environment,

Great Lakes, and Energy, highlighting how important these policies are to the life blood of the Michigan ecosystem itself.

Additionally, Whitmer ordered the founding of a new office of climate and energy — one that will work with the governor’s office to react to the impacts of climate change.

Naturally, this sweep of policy invited challenges from the opposing party.

On Feb. 14 Whitmer's executive order restructuring the environmental agency was shut down by the Republicanheld state legislature. The state house voted to reject the order 58-51, and the state senate followed suit in a 2216 vote. According to Gongwer News Service, it's the first time in 42 years the Michigan legislature has voted to reject a governor's executive order.

Whitmer isn’t letting this road block deter her, however, telling the press that she will be issuing a new and similar executive order soon.

In a Detroit Free Press (freep.com) interview, Whitmer insisted that people are counting on her, and the policy is about fixing Michigan's drinking water and protecting the Great Lakes.

Lone Tree Council, a local tri city nonprofit organization, member Terry Miller discussed the widespread repercussions of climate change on the people of the planet.

“The planet will survive,” Miller explained. “It's the people on the planet that will struggle — with rising sea

levels, disrupted governments, extreme droughts, fires, floods and hurricanes and all the human tragedy they bring.”

All this talk of devastation to the Earth’s ecosystems and squabbling between politicians may leave people feeling a little overwhelmed or hopeless, but efforts from any level, from national to collegiate, help.

Delta College’s environmental club specifically encourages students and faculty to take full advantage of the college’s services, discussing the environment, and specifically climate change, in an open public format by organizing meetings that anybody attending Delta College can join.

“We strive to increase awareness and initiative to help protect our environment,” president of Environmental Club John Nosal said. “Our next event emphasizes recycling. It’s called ‘The Recycling Initiative,’ and through it we will increase awareness about the importance of going green.”

Club advisor and Assistant Professor in Biology Kristopher Nitz highlighted the importance of individual efforts when it comes to being an ally to the environment.

“It starts at a small level,” Nitz said.

“If there are people that are willing to

recycle, be conscientious about the vehicle they drive, [etc.]... all of those things do something. It’s not hopeless.

General Motors are designing more cars that aren’t releasing as many carbon dioxide emissions. Lots of factories are going through changes so they don’t release as many emissions.”

As a people, humanity is at a difficult impasse when it comes to the relationship with our home, but persistence is key in any project large or small. As Nitz detailed, movements like the fight against climate change are just that. Movements.

They aren’t born or made by one person, or singular event, but rather all of us.

“Never say never!” Miller assured.

“There is no question that we are running out of time, but global efforts to reduce carbon are underway. Individuals, institutions, including Delta College, countries and even corporations are striving to keep carbon in the ground.”

Frustrated Fan: Stop posing with the competition Joe Thornton • Editor-in-Chief

Dear athletes, What is the deal with all of this lovey-dovey post-game celebration?

No matter what the sport… no matter what the team… after every game, regardless of who has competed against whom, people are posing for pictures afterwards. Sometimes you’ll even see teams laughing around with a player from a rival team, hugging and shaking hands.

What’s the point of this, and when did it become the norm? I don’t understand.

You compete against someone for an hour or more of in-game time, and then proceed to act like best friends right after

they beat you? It doesn’t make sense.

I blame this largely on the NFL and their “Football is Family” push. In that campaign we saw the predominant rise of the “jersey swap” in sports.

Following a brutal game of football, players would pry their jerseys off their back, autograph said jersey and pass it on to an opposing competitor.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like seeing athletes who are meant to compete against one another celebrating together after a game and signing autographs for one another.

NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. has been known to bring multiple jerseys to a game just to swap with more than one player on an opposing team. I mean, what is the point? If I were a competitive player, I’d be in no mood to smile and swap gear with someone who just handed my team a loss.

You would have never seen something like this happen in years past. Jersey

swaps are transitioning to popularity in all realms of sports: MLS, NBA, etc.

Soon enough, we’ll see players laughing and switching jerseys at the end of the Super Bowl or the NBA Finals. I mean really, what’s next? Curry and LeBron smiling for a post-game photo op right after one of them was handed the largest loss of the season? These aren’t things that are far out of reach.

All I’m asking of you, athletes, is, as competitors, don’t smile and joke around with the players who just handed you a loss.

Get it together, A Frustrated Fan

Lady Pioneers lose confidence and momentum Steele Wynne • Reporter

The Lady Pioneers lost sight of what they really wanted Saturday, Feb. 9, and surrendered their homecoming victory to the Schoolcraft Ocelots with a final score of 86-64. After starting the game with an extent of lethargy, Delta found themselves down a large point deficit of 10 points by the end of the first half, which quickly grew to around 20 points and remained constant throughout the rest of the game.

“Altogether we had no energy; we weren’t able to execute the things we’ve practiced, our transitions were slow and we did not play the way we normally do,” remarks No. 22 Jennifer Grinwis, recalling what the flaws were in her team’s gameplay.

After losing their last game on Feb. 2, coming off their five game winning streak, the Pioneers were crushed and were looking to this game to regain some of their momentum. Sadly, they were unsuccessful in doing so.

“They wanted it more than us [...]

That’s it,” says head coach Shonda Long, with a sense of disappointment, explaining why her team underperformed.

“They came out ready to play and

wanted the game more than we did.”

Coach Long further explained that the deciding factor of this game was starting off in the hole yet again, and stepping onto the court with an apparent lack of focus.

“They think they’re going to be the comeback kids every game and we can’t be the comeback kids every time,” says Long.

“We can’t do that against good teams.”

With seven games left in the conference, the ladies must take a brief moment and rethink what their priorities are, how they really want to finish the season and where they want to take their team.

No. 34 Alyssa Mudd says that confidence and working on playing for each other is what this team needs to work on the most moving forward.

It is very difficult to lose a hot streak, then try to recover it against a secondseed team such as Schoolcraft.

“We lack confidence, and once we start building confidence in our other players, we’ll play better,” says Mudd, searching for what her team needs the most.

Although the Delta Lady Pioneers will not finish the season with a perfect record, they could still have a shot at the championship. However, time is running out and there is very little room for error and lost games. Many great wars have been won with lost battles; you learn from one and win the next. This may be the case for the Lady Pioneers going forward.

Delta baseball runs into bad weather instead of home plate Steele Wynne • Reporter

The Pioneers baseball team has faced many challenges in preparation for their upcoming season as it draws nearer and nearer. On several occasions earlier this month, Delta’s main campus closed due to inclement weather and hindered the team’s opportunities to practice.

Daniel Smith, the Pioneers’ head coach, explained that while the weather has played a big role in the team’s inability to practice, the team has been malleable with their schedules.

“The snow days have been rough, but our men believe in the mission, so they’ve been flexible to alternative practice methods — like six to seven-hour practices on Saturdays and Sundays in order to catch up,” says Smith.

Smith went on to articulate the faith he has in his team and their success for this season.

“Our team this year is very intelligent. The first-year guys have picked up on our philosophy quickly and adapt to change well,” states Smith, as he describes what aspect of his team he is most proud of. “I’m confident in our coaching staff — with Coach Jeff and how quickly he’s turned our pitchers around and Coach Murphy getting our offense in order and ready to compete every at bat.

I’m also confident in returning players from the 2018 season as they were all pressed into action as freshmen, so they have the [crucial] experience.”

With their first game scheduled for Feb. 28, the Pioneers find themselves playing catch up as they scramble to make up practice time. However, second baseman Evan Pocius, also shares his coach’s credence when it comes to his team and their abilities.

“Once we play our first game against Union in Kentucky, we’ll know where we are going to sit for the season. [...] We’ve got a pretty strong infield, great pitching staff — hitting looked good in the fall,” says Pocius, expressing his optimism towards the season. “We also bond a lot better than most teams, and we’re all pretty close, which is vital.”

Sharing his teammate’s positive attitude that the team will be successful, outfielder Cam Fowler enlightened on the biggest obstacle he and his teammates will face over the course of the season.

“The Michigan weather is a big factor [in our gameplay] and you never know for sure what it will be like. Last year we got backed up [due to cancellations] and we had to play a game everyday for two weeks straight.

That’s a big thing to overcome — the wind, the rain, the snow,” remarked Fowler.

Fowler went on to explain the most important things the team will practice from now till the end of their season.

“Fundamentals — and we have a lot of plays that we put in [...] but we might run a certain play [only] once or twice a year.

But when they work, it’s a real momentum shifter,” responds Fowler, remarking that the team has a few ace plays up their sleeve.

As long as the weather complies, the Delta baseball team has a promising season ahead of them. By the time of their first home game on Friday, March 22, the Pioneers will have found their rhythm and will be well prepared to face any opponent.

The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, located at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), unveiled its latest (and one of the most unique) exhibitions yet with the Creative Cardinals exhibition.

Unlike previous exhibits, the Creative Cardinals exhibition showcases work from both staff and students as they explore various mediums and techniques.

“While I consider myself a painter and will show paintings on canvas, I also enjoy working in other media such as assemblage and mosaic,” says SVSU art coordinator Tisch Lewis.

For the exhibit, Lewis decided to showcase some pieces of artwork that were part of a bigger body of work.

“I am showing work from a continuously growing body of work in an installation-based manner titled ‘An Illustrated Journey Through My Borderline Symptoms (& Other Things),’” says Lewis.

Lewis’ inspiration for her series comes from a very personal battle with mental health issues. In particular, her work emphasizes her struggle with borderline personality disorder.

However, this has not slowed Lewis down. Lewis instead has used her artwork as a beacon for those who also suffer from the condition, as well as a tool to understanding her own symptoms more.

“This work is a continuation of a work [...] in which I discussed my personal journey with my mental health issues such as my diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Through this, I am able to study and investigate how I show symptoms of the disorder, but also generate a sense of community with those who suffer from the same thing or other illnesses,” says Lewis.

Lewis then goes on to say: “In fact, I was able to meet someone who felt compelled to speak with me about her own journey with borderline personality disorder based off of

how I depicted my symptoms.”

Mike Mosher, who is a professor of art and communication at SVSU, also creates his artwork from a very personal place.

When asked about his work “Mercenaries — Milton Hall Shoot," Mosher stated that he thinks about “violence in this world.”

“A 2008 sabbatical project mixed imagery from the Afghan and Iraqi war zones with other kinds, and in 2017, I exhibited paintings and drawings at Counter Culture about the 2012 shooting of Milton Hall by Saginaw police — an event documented, in all its horror, on YouTube,” says Mosher.

Mosher’s work also comes from a deeper, more introspective look into his earlier years in Ann Arbor.

“In my 20s, I interrogated my own background and education, growing up in 1960s Ann Arbor, in my work. I have juxtaposed a sweet painting of the neighborhood boys playing army, with two marker ink drawings (on printed cardboard from curtain packages) of the seven officers confronting Mr. Hall,” says Mosher.

Exhibitions such as Creative Cardinals allow for both professional and budding artists to show their skill and inspiration to not only people on SVSU campus, but to the community as well. Lewis, who considers herself a practicing artist wants people to know that skills and learning aren’t only for the professionals but also for the dreamers.

“Skill and learning aren’t isolated to those who would consider themselves ‘professional artists,’ and in turn, the fact that people from so many different positions on campus can make things can, in turn, inspire students to follow their dreams,” says Lewis.

The Creative Cardinals exhibition began on Jan. 31 and goes until March 2. Be sure to come out and support these local artists as they showcase their many breathtaking, inspired pieces.

Noteworthy: Avril Lavigne keeps her 'Head Above Water'

Since debuting in 2002 with her debut album “Let Go,” Avril Lavigne has been able to capture a nostalgic place in many of our memories with her angst-filled, pop-punk anthems. For years, she had us jamming out to songs such as: “Sk8er Boi,” “My Happy Ending,” “I’m With You” and “Girlfriend.” However, after reaching the pinnacle of her success, Lavigne seamlessly disappeared. It was later revealed that the singer almost lost her life due to Lyme disease. Lavigne’s first release since the reveal of her condition promised to be darker and more heartfelt, but can Lavigne swim against the current to keep her “Head Above Water”?

Lavigne has always had a conflicting vocal presence. Her worst songs often feature her intentionally causing her voice to squeak as she shouts out the lyrics to her songs. In her best moments, Lavigne is a commanding emotive singer, knowing when to belt and how to subtly convey a deeper message in her lower register. On

“Head Above Water,” Lavigne plays more into the latter category. Her more emotive vocal moments can be felt on songs such as “Head Above Water,” “Warrior” and “I Fell In Love With The Devil.”

The album’s title track is arguably one of the best songs Lavigne has ever created and sees her at her most emotive as she pleads for her life. Lavigne’s voice soars with the pleading of another day, only to deepen with the realization that another day might not come. Every word she wrote is brought to life with her anxious desperation. “Head Above Water” can draw a tear from the driest eyes.

The production across the album sees Lavigne drift from her pop-punk days to more soul-infused pop ballads.

This allows for a more mature sound to be crafted which elevates Lavigne’s vocal presence across “Head Above Water.” One of the best examples of this is on “Warrior,” a reverb-infused piano ballad that features clapping drums and hints of string instrumentals.

The Memphis soul-inspired “Tell Me It’s Over,” on the other hand, pairs traditional soul elements with a skittering trap beat that is out of place. Had Lavigne opted out of the misplaced trap beat, the song would have been another standout track. The worst production comes with Lavigne’s most recent single from the album. “Dumb Blonde” is an annoying cheerleader anthem that rips off Gwen

Stefani’s 2005 anthem “Hollaback Girl” in the worst possible way. The marching band-style drumline clashes with the horns and the electric guitar. “Dumb Blonde” is only tolerable if you enjoy the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

The strongest aspect of “Head Above Water” lies in the lyrical content. The lyrics reflect the former punk-pop princess maturing as she grapples with her health issues and the struggles of life. The track “Head Above Water” finds Lavigne drifting into Christian music territory as she explores the themes of religion and death. On it, Lavigne sings “God, keep my head / above water. Don't let me drown / it gets harder. / I'll meet you there / at the altar. / As I fall down to my knees.” Lavigne could make an excellent Christian rock album if she wanted to.

Overall, “Head Above Water” is a triumph for Lavigne as she swims against the tide to create her strongest album in years. It shows a mature artistic growth in every way and will have you jamming and crying at the same time. “Head Above Water” is an easy four out of five stars and a definite recommendation to everyone.

Despite the name of the band, there is nothing “phony” about this delightful little tune. The Brooklyn originated band considers itself to be composed of “experimental splashes of jazz, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, soul, rock and many more sub-genre expressions” (from their website). This accurately describes the mixed genre of ‘Why iii Love the Moon’; The song is a beautifully crafted collage of sound that transitions from a slow, dreamy piano in the introduction to a more upbeat tempo as the rest of the track plays out.

The rhythm is both swaying yet bursting with a lively, strong energy as the lyrics tell the story of how the artist finds himself falling in love with the moon. You may find yourself just as lost in the intricate layers of musical instruments as the artist is in their search for love. This song is truly the melting pot of music and can be enjoyed by all that come across it.

The British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac is perhaps best known for the massively successful album “Rumours”; however they had several hits in the 1980s as well, which are housed on the albums “Mirage” (1982) and “Tango in the Night” (1987). On the former album is a unique and somewhat quirky little song called “Oh Diane.” Released as a single in the U.S. in February of 1982 (four months before “Mirage” was released), the track is a ‘50s throwback with a retro pop style that is highlighted from the chord progression right down to the guitars, percussion and Lindsey Buckingham’s smoothed out vocals. It’s a very shallow song, lyrically speaking, but it’s still very catchy and can easily remind anyone of those old 45s from Grandma’s closet. “Oh Diane” is mainly overlooked in favor of bigger Fleetwood Mac hits, as it may be more of a novelty, but it’s a nice song nonetheless and holds its charm more than 35 years later.

For anyone looking to add a little grunge to their playlist, Cage The Elephant is the perfect band to start with. Specifically their song “Spiderhead” found on one of their more popular albums “Melophobia”.

“Spiderhead” is perfect for any music listener because it has the perfect combination of unique sounds and hard-hitting lyrics. The song is perfect for any scene from kicking back with a tight group of friends to blaring it in your car while it’s late and you’re alone. Songs this versatile and unique don’t come along very often, but when they do, they should be appreciated for all of their glory!

Q: Where are we?

A: Bay City, Michigan! The heart of downtown, 917 Washington Avenue.

Q: Why a record store?

A: For me, it was the best way to communicate with people that felt the same way I did. It didn’t matter whether we related on the same type of music, it was a place outsiders could go where they didn’t have to feel like an outsider.

It was what I had when I was growing up, and I wanted to give that back to the community that gave it to me.

Q: So what is the purpose of your business? Did you see any opportunity to profit?

A: I didn’t even realize there would be money in the record business. I opened the store exactly for the community… for the people who didn’t really have a place to go in town. This was the place you could talk weird music or weird things and it didn't really matter. Comic book stores are the same thing. There was a crowd that started forming when we opened that just keeps coming and getting bigger and bigger.

Q: Would you say that you’ve had success in your business, then?

Do you feel you’re fulfilling your purpose with your career choice?

A: Oh, yup. Absolutely. Every day is a back and forth, but I used to really let the “back” days get to me. But I learned that it’s a pendulum, and you

always get to the “forth,” so let those hard “back” swings [should] just be used towards something better than anger or frustration. Maybe take that mental energy and spend it on something else.

Q: So use the mental capacity you would have spent occupied with that anger and put it somewhere else?

A: Yeah! Put it somewhere else and you can notice some really different, amazing, positive changes in everything you do.

Q: How much do you think you work? Outside of scheduled hours much?

A: You know, I knew it was gonna be a lot of work. I just wasn’t sure how to manage the work or even do the work to begin with. But now it’s been six and a half years, and you don’t get a trial period, so you learn to do the things that need to be done. I was here doing the books, I was buying used records, doing orders, I was fixing guitars and we were open six days a week. But I never really counted any hours up.

Q: Why is that?

A: If I put in a 70-hour week, I’ve found some sweet, new records, I’ve met a few new people, I have gone to a new city somewhere in Michigan I haven’t been to, I will have worked on one of the rarest guitars made in 1962… you know.

And that’s in a week! So, while someone works 60 hours a week and acts tough for it, I worked 60 hours that same week and did all that stuff. Or I worked 70 hours! But I don’t care, because the more I put into it, it seems like the more crazy things happen. And I don’t mean a bad crazy, I mean a cool crazy, an awesome crazy, the best kind of crazy there is.

On Saturday, Feb. 23 at the State Theatre in Bay City, come see Dean Sams for an acoustic evening of hits. Dean Sams is one of the founding members of the pop-country, hitmaking band Lonestar. As a member of the band, Sams has sold millions of albums and has garnered numerous awards from prestigious organizations. This concert event begins at 7 p.m. Admission is between $20 and $30. Seating is reserved, so be sure to get your tickets before they’re gone. Light up your Saturday night with this “Lonestar.”

Raising smoking age restricts freedom

In the 1950s, smoking was your one-way ticket into the cool kids’ club.

Unaware of the damage that smoking cigarettes can have on our bodies, the majority of society engaged in this activity throughout their daily lives. Seventy years later, it is a lot less popular among Americans and the government has placed many taxes and other regulations on who can smoke and how and where they can smoke.

Most recently, Hawaii State Representative Richard Creagan proposed a bill that suggests the legal age to smoke or buy cigarettes should be raised to 30 in 2020, and then gradually increasing each year until finally reaching the irrational age of 100 years old in 2024. Not only does this take away the freedom to do as one wishes from the people, but it is also irrational to believe that putting this law into effect will cease smoking entirely.

Once the news broke that smoking cigarettes may not be the healthiest habit to acquire, there have been many programs and policies put in place to discourage the buying and employing of tobacco products. The government and other organizations have done everything they can to warn people of the negative side effects that smoking may have.

Despite being aware of these hazards, there are still many who choose to smoke for their own personal reasons. As long as smokers are thoroughly informed of the risks, there is no sound logic that their right to make an informed decision should be taken away. This proposed legislation is denying people of their freedom to cope with negative emotions or stress how they see fit for themselves.

The government has already put laws in place that make it illegal to smoke in enclosed public places. This means that there is little to no secondhand smoking being exchanged among people who choose not to smoke. The only person that the smoking harms is the person that chooses to partake in the activity. If smokers are willing to pay the taxes for their cigarettes and deal with the repercussions, let them!

Alcohol and weed similarly have negative health effects, yet the law requiring the legal age to drink to be

21 has been in place for 40 years, and marijuana has just recently been legalized among many states. Other tobacco products, such as vape pens, cigars and hookah, are not being regulated under this ban. These products are believed to be considered “safer” than cigarettes, yet they still expose you to nicotine and can cause a tobacco addiction. Why should smoking cigarettes be regulated when these other activities are glorified in the media and within society?

By raising the legal cigarette smoking age to 100 years Hawaii is essentially making all cigarette usage illegal, considering the average lifespan for a Hawaiian is approximately 80 years old. Not only are freedoms being taken away from citizens but the government is losing out on the income from the taxes on cigarettes. Americans have seen from experience that by banning any substance, it only encourages the use and selling of it illegally. If the health risks and heavy taxes have not already convinced smokers to quit, then this bill certainly will not do the job either. There will always be a way for consumers to get what they want, so why take away their rights to do it legally?

Smoking kills and should be criminalized

In recent news, a Hawaiian bill banning anyone under the age of 100 from smoking cigarettes was recently proposed. This proposal begs the question as to if other states should jump on to this idea sooner rather than later or even if at all.

It is no secret that smoking cigarettes is one of the biggest killers that

Americans face. In addition to causing a slew of cancers and contributing to heart disease, the negative effects of smoking can slow even the most energetic of today’s youth.

Personally, I’m all for having free will and think that it’s important to have freedom to choose whether or not someone can decide to enjoy a cigarette. However, (as a non-smoker), I do not see any major payoffs that smokers can benefit from. Because of this, I think the world, or America at the very least, could revive some justice by raising the age of smoking to 100.

Sure — if done within the decade or so, there would be some problems with those who are currently hooked on smoking. But, any measures that would be needed to help those people would be well worth the years of their life that they are preserving.

What would America look like if the large majority of the population couldn’t obtain cigarettes? First of all, most cigarette manufacturers would most likely go under due to the significantly lower demand and citizens would start going to extreme length to illegals buy them or start making them. America would have to draw a definitive line between that is allowed and what isn’t.

Would tobacco be legal? Or would only nicotine be banned? And, most of all... what defines a cigarette?

Yes, putting this all into play seems like something that would take a lot of work and almost an entire generation to eradicate. However, isn’t all that work worth seeing our citizen live to see greater ages?

And who knows! Maybe if we raise the age of legally obtaining cigarettes to 100, maybe people will actually start living long enough to be able to smoke them again!

Celebrities should not be criticized for old tweets We all know that cringeworthy feeling of regret after thinking about or looking at something we did years ago.

Undoubtedly, these are the same feelings that celebrities like Kevin Hart experience when news about their past Twitter activity comes into the spotlight. Shortly after Hart publicly announced that he would be hosting the 2019 Oscars, old tweets of his that were posted between 2009 and 2011 began to resurface in the media. Hart was scorned and ridiculed by the public for his homophobic posts and for his comments in his “Seriously Funny” movie on how he would react if he found out that his son was gay.

Society has changed a lot within the past ten years. As a whole, we have all become more aware that jokes that some may find funny are incredibly offensive to others. As society progresses, we learn what is considered socially acceptable and what is not, and our minds and opinions change as well. Hart’s comedy skit regarding homophobic quips and slurs filled the room with laughter in 2010. There was no uproar on whether or not this made Hart a bad person, and he certainly didn’t lose out on any opportunities because of it.

Considering the myriad films that are up for awards at the Oscars that feature LGBTQ storylines and stars, Hart’s tweets caused quite the controversy. Ultimately, Kevin Hart lost out on what he had considered “an opportunity of a lifetime” after he

refused to apologize for his old tweets.

In a post from Hart’s personal Instagram page, he wrote, “If you don’t believe people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don’t know what to tell you.”

Noticeably, old tweets that would be considered contentious in today’s society seem to only pop up when celebrities are doing well in their careers or being honored in one way or another.

Similarly, director James Gunn was in hot water when tweets containing jokes about rape and pedophilia blew up on the internet after he was asked to work on the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Although he apologized, he was still fired from working on the film.

Like Hart said himself, people grow.

Celebrities should not have to apologize for the person they were nearly ten years ago! We have all grown as people and have realized that using one’s religion, gender, race or anything regarding someone else, for that matter, is off limits. Twitter trolls who wait to dig up dirt on celebrities once they have been given awards or opportunities keep the world stuck in the past. Comments and actions that happened a decade ago do not reflect who you are today.

If people keep living in the past, we will never be able to move forward.

Music isn’t what it used to be

Many people today may argue that music is one of the most important things that gets them through their day. Whether it is a track of the most lyrical rap, a playlist of upbeat sounds strung together by the latest-and-greatest pop artist or their cousin’s freshly homemade mixtape, music is widely seen as important.

Despite all of this being true, I propose a simple question: Why has music been getting so bad lately? Don't get me wrong, I love the diverse world of music that we live in. But lately, the universal standards seem to have dropped very low.

I believe the music industry is failing us in two ways nowadays. The first (and most common) is that record companies are trying to make stars out of people who are better off working backstage.

To me, it seems as if they are selecting future artists based off of marketability rather than talent. There is a reason pop artists are called pop artists — they blow up quickly, then drop off the face of our timelines as soon as they are done being a one-hit wonder.

The second way that the music industry does us dirty is that a lot of artists nowadays seem to lose themselves once they get a little more fame than what they were used to in the past.

Often times artists change for various reasons. Many times it can be for personal growth, exploration of a new sound or simply wanting to try something new. It does not always mean that the music quality has decreased or that they lost who they are. In fact, many artists change their sound once they get famous to go against the fame.

Personally, I think that artists simply don't have the passion that they used to.

Rather than being attracted to the creative outlet that writing music can be, they

lust after the fame and fortune. Even a lot of the artists that are in it for the right reasons at the beginning always seem to get corrupted at some point along the way.

At the end of the day, the artists that are truly worth listening to will stick.

However, I strongly encourage giving smaller, independent artists a chance because you never know who will blow up and change or who will never get their big break. Yes, some people may see this as a prompt for another vicious cycle of cookie-cutter pop music. But I disagree. Encourage a wider array of styles and stop the wave of one-hit wonders — let true talent rise to the surface!
