Delta discusses new agriculture program JESSICA SIEROCKI SAGINAW – The board of trustees convened Sept. 12 at the Delta College Ricker Center.

Emily Clement, manager of Strategic Partnerships Academic Services, and Leslie Siefka, Agricultural Technology Program coordinator, opened up September’s board meeting to discuss the progress of the new agricultural program at Delta College.

Delta is partnering with Michigan State University for the new program. According to Siefka, when the program first started in the fall of 2015, 11 students were a part of the program. Currently Siefka now has 46 students involved.

The newer program will allow students to dual-enroll with Michigan State University but

take classes strictly on Delta’s campuses. The program will have students graduate with an associate degree in applied science and agriculture.

Jean Goodnow, president of Delta College, acknowledged Siefka for the hard work she has been doing by coordinating the partnership.

“Leslie is doing a fantastic job recruiting students from our area,” says Goodnow.

The board of trustees also unanimously approved the replacement of the two-way radio communication system to Anderson Radio. The contract under the state of Michigan totals to $157,472.

The board of trustees was then taken outside of the Ricker Center for a presentation.

Crystal McMorris, associate professor of English, and Felicia Peters, professor of computer science and information technology, gave a brief presentation about the study abroad trip to Cuba, which took place in March of 2017.

Board members appeared impressed by the extent of artistic, educational and cultural experiences both professors were able to experience with Delta students.

Delta’s resource day helpful for students JACK RECHSTEINER UNIVERSITY CENTER – How many of Delta’s student resources do you know about?

Student Resource Day was one of the four events for Delta’s Student Success Week and it was aimed specifically at letting students know about the resources available to them to help them succeed in college and beyond. Taking place throughout the main campus hallways Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Student Success Day featured booths set up for the different assets Delta College offers, as well as tables dedicated to student clubs and community organizations.

Making your way through the halls, there are plenty of friendly faces sitting at tables advertising student clubs for everything from astronomy and sustainability to fitness and film production.

“The day has been very good, it’s been pretty easy getting people to come up and talk. People have been really interested in what’s going on.

I’d say it’s been a success, all

the different tables have done really well today,” says Savannah Gilmore, Astronomy Club president and Phi Theta Kappa member.

While a lot of students make their way through the hallways with tunnel vision about getting to their next class or going to get lunch, there are still quite a few milling around and talking to the different members at the club tables.

“I’d like for students to know short-term counseling is available to them. We’re connecting with students to let them know that counseling and advising is much bigger than just academic advising,” says Nikita Murry, Delta College counselor.

There were also faculty advisors out to help students with questions about transferring colleges, scholarship information and to talk about the different programs offered through Delta. Job fair brings 78 businesses to Delta’s campus JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – The 12th annual Great Lakes Bay Job Fair was held at Delta College Wednesday, Sept. 13. Businesses like Bavarian Inn Lodge, Kroger, Mobile Medical Response, The Savant Group and Michigan State Police attended the fair.

Counseling and career adviser Martin Finney helped put the job fair together to aid students as well as give back to the community.

“It’s easier for everyone to meet with all of these employers in one spot. The ultimate goal for our students is to be able to find a job after they’re done with school, so what better way to get them exposed to what’s out there than bringing the employers to Delta?” says Finney.

The Great Lakes Job Fair was one of four events of Delta’s Student Success Week.

“This fair is different from the Student Employment Fair; these jobs are located off campus.

Something students should always consider is where they would want to work in the future and start talking to potential employers now,” says Finney.

The event was open to community members as well as students.

Former Delta student, Kaitlin Brown, 21, came back for the job fair to practice her skills and meet with hiring employers in the area.

“Even if you don’t see an employer or a company that you want to work for, it’s a good experience to talk to professionals and network.

Knowing how to interact in an interview is a crucial skill you need in the workforce,” says Brown.

Chuck Pappas, Wayne County sheriff deputy, has recruited in the job fair in previous years.

“We look at every opportunity to recruit. Education is a wonderful attribute, so we look toward colleges for future workers,” says Pappas.

Melissa Westron of Bay City was grateful for the opportunity to make an impression on employers.

“I think it’s a great event. I personally discovered businesses that I have never seen before, which is great, and these companies that come here get to meet workers with ambitions, which is great for them as well,” says Westron.

Toll bridges may become reality in Bay City ADAM PRZESLAK BAY CITY – Rumors began in the springtime about Bay Cityarea bridges beginning to require tolls for motorists. There are four bridges crossing the Saginaw River located in various parts of the city.

A June city meeting confirmed suspicion of some bridges possibly requiring tolls. Independence Bridge and Liberty Bridge were the two under discussion. According to city officials tolling is a viable option for keeping both the bridges and finances intact.

Independence Bridge, stretching 1,211 feet, has been open to traffic since 1973, making it the older of the two bridges in question. Liberty reaches over the Saginaw River 2,344.5 feet, making it significantly longer than Independence, but it is ten years younger. Each bridge opens for ships, safety testing or other various precautions just under 1,000 times per year according to statistics provided at the June meeting.

Both bridges’ infrastructures are vastly deteriorating, and Bay City has been struggling to keep

up with repairs. A private firm called United Bridge Partners proposed a pitch to replace Independence and maintain Liberty during the June meeting.

United Bridge Partners is composed of a private equity firm from Virginia by the name of American Infrastructure Funds and design firm Figg Bridge Group from Florida.

Independence Bridge would be replaced with a 120-foot-tall bridge, which would allow ships and freighters to travel beneath the bridge without a need for a bascule. This would eliminate traffic jams caused by passing vessels; however, the proposal would also include a $2 toll for out-of-town residents and a $1 toll for Bay City residents.

Tolls would also be implemented on Liberty Bridge, which will most likely remain the way it is structurally, albeit with the addition of a toll booth.

While the idea is still in talks, nothing has been set in stone, though it has some locals angered and confused.

“It’s sort of ridiculous,” says Kody Wenglikowski.

Wenglikowski, a third-year Delta

student and Essexville resident, was especially upset over the proposal, which forces him to pay an extra dollar than Bay City residents.

“I live closer to Independence Bridge than most people in Bay City do, but I’d be the one stuck paying more every time I cross it,” says Wenglikowski.

Questions and concerns have popped up from Bay City-area residents, as well including how emergency personnel would navigate the newly implemented tolls. The proposal offers up that EMTs, firefighters and police would get through free of charge. City officials questioned if school buses and city vehicles would also be exempt, but the firm replied that those vehicles usually are expected to pay tolls, although a deal may be negotiated.

As for how exactly the tolls would be paid, the only information made available is from an Mlive article, which states that tolls “would be paid using an electronic user fee system that keeps traffic flowing.”

Delta celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month JACK RECHSTEINER

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Each year in the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15 and runs until Oct. 15, which is a period to celebrate and commemorate the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

Hispanic Heritage Month was first established as Hispanic Heritage Week

by President Lyndon B. Johnson and was later written into law as a full 30-day period by Ronald Reagan in 1988. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversaries of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Following those, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days Sept. 16, 18 and 21, respectively.

According to the Hispanic Heritage Month website, Hispanic Heritage Month was established as a way to celebrate the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino

Americans in North America. The breadth of the Latino experience is a vital aspect of America’s diverse history that deserves commemorating. It includes experiences of people with cultural, religious and linguistic traditions from Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and many other nations from Latin America.

It is impossible to tell the experiences of each of these cultures with a single history, but the movement of their people, ideas and beliefs across the lands of the America’s is central to the American story.

Delta is acknowledging Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting events on campus throughout Sept. and Oct. On Sept. 19, Delta College kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a game show where students could win gift cards to places such as Speedway, Subway and Burger King.

Latino trivia questions.

“In Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to celebrate, but we also want to educate at the same time so that’s our number one goal,” says McMath.

Hispanic Heritage Month is an important event, because the Latino history is such an integral part of the United States’ history as a whole and their contributions to US social, political, artistic and educational institutions have brought about change in our everyday lives. Remembering these perspectives and allowing Latino Americans to reclaim their struggles and triumphs gives us all a deeper understanding of how our world is a result of so many different peoples coming together to unify.

All of these events are building blocks to live a successful and productive life.

“We tend to focus more on our reputation rather than our character, but what you think of yourself is that really matters. We want out students to ask themselves what they can you do every day in order to build their moral compass or create a solid structure for their life,” says McMath.

SAGINAW – In line with the current renaissance that Saginaw is experiencing, the First Congregational Church is looking to use its location in the heart of downtown to contribute something of its own to the resurrection.

Quincy Dobbs is one of the main minds behind opening up the ministry as another venue for arts and culture – primarily classic musical arts.

“Reaching out to the community is important and events like these are a great way to get people in the door. My hope is to get the church to become the place to be, and to be the place that the people in Saginaw want it to be. You don’t have to join or donate, it’s there for anyone who wants to

show up,” says Dobbs.

The church’s mission statement says that they “welcome persons of all socio-economic backgrounds, all cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, all intellectual and physical abilities, and all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.” Using the talent and supplies already available to the church, they hope to broaden what they can provide for the area.

“We have to reach out and collaborate with everyone.

SAGINAW – A piece of indie music history was brought to Saginaw, and he promptly made sure everyone knew that “this party is just getting started.”

Calvin Johnson is a songwriter and music producer who is also known for being the founder and owner of the indie label K Records, which has

been called “key to the development of indie music since the ‘80s.” Through K Records, Johnson has worked with Modest Mouse, Beck, Built to Spill and many others.

Center Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof will be running at Midland Center for the Arts starting Sept. 22.

MIDLAND – A buzz of anticipation fills the auditorium in preparation for dress rehearsal. As the orchestra warms up, music fills the air alongside excited laughter for the show to begin. I got my camera ready, relaxed back into my seat and was ready to be taken on a journey to Imperial Russia in 1905.

For those who aren’t familiar with the play, “Fiddler on the Roof ” is set in a small Russian shtetl called Anatevka, where

tradition rules above all else. The story focuses on Tevye’s family; three of his five daughters fall in love but their marriages don’t exactly follow the tradition the town is familiar with. Tevye has to make some hard decisions concerning his work, family and the future of his beloveds.

The first thing I noticed about the musical was the set, which didn’t have any run-of-the-mill props. I admired how there was almost a contemporary feel to the 1971 musical. Once the lights turned on and the first words of the opening tune “Tradition” were sung, it was clear that the show was one no one should miss.

The voices of the entire cast melded together and reached the rafters in the amphitheater, giving me goosebumps when I heard some of the higher notes.

The choreography was very impressive and much more involved than I had

expected. The traditional bottle dancing was a highlight of the entire show: At Tzeitel’s wedding – Tevye’s oldest daughter – five gentlemen commenced the evening’s dancing with bottles atop their heads.

Let me tell you, no one was more shocked than I was that these performers were able to keep their bottles balanced, especially after

dancing on their knees. Such a spectacular performance, which showed just how much time and energy were

put into their practices.

Let’s not forget that choreography cannot be done without music. For every show I’ve seen at MCFTA, I have always been impressed by their orchestra – and this musical was no different. There are no other words besides an allencompassing “brava.”

Throughout the show, there were also little bouts of humor, making the performances engaging and fun to watch. I caught myself making personal connections with the villagers in the small town and could feel a sense of community among the cast, which was remarkable.

For me, Tevye’s character, played by Tony Lynch, stood out the most to me. Yes, he is essentially the main character of the musical, but he was portrayed as so much more. Here is a poor man who loves his family and God above all else. He started combatting tradition

on his own by educating his daughters while also being moved to let his daughter marry a man she loved, because he knew it would make her happy. Lynch’s voice was wonderful, not too overbearing for his character, yet bold enough to encompass Tevye’s personality. Of course, every member of the cast was amazing alongside him. The show is a great example that community theater doesn’t equate with lackluster performances.

This musical is another great addition to MCFTA’s wonderful Center Stage Theatre performances and is definitely a must-see.

The show runs Sept. 22, 23, 29, 30 and Oct. 5, 6 and 7, all beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Matinees are Sept. 24, Oct, 1 and 8, beginning at 3 p.m.

Hello all! This week’s This Is Art is going to be short and sweet because it’s about an opportunity that I think deserves a spotlight, but there’s not too much to say other than giving you the info to take advantage of it.

Have you ever dreamed of getting paid for publishing your creative writing? Whether it’s personal essays, short story fiction or poetry, the Delta College English Division is currently accepting entries for a contest that could make those things happen for you.

The Liberal Arts Network

Development (LAND) puts an annual writing competition open to any student enrolled at a Michigan twoyear public college and offers the chance for writing to be recognized on two different levels.

First, Delta hosts its own local writing competition to choose the first and second place writings in each category to be published and award them a cash prize and certificate of achievement. After that, those first and second place writings are sent to compete at the state level with writers from all over Michigan. This offers writers an opportunity to get recognition on a statewide level as well as another series of cash prizes awarded to the first, second and third place winners.

In December a reception is held for all the winners to

be presented and given their awards.

Now that I’ve got convinced about the possibility of money, fame and glory, you’re probably going to want to know HOW exactly to enter. The deadline for entries is Nov. 17, so make sure to get in any submissions before that window of time closes. It doesn’t help to be late on this because you’ll have to wait until next year. REVIEW New “It” breaks box office AUBRIE SMITH Every 27 years, Pennywise the Dancing Clown comes out to play in the town of Derry, Maine. During his year outside “the well,” he sets out to terrorize children, feed on fear and pluck off the weak.

Exactly 27 years from the original film release of “It” in 1990, the clown was back again on the big screen. Played by Bill Skarsgård, Pennywise was creepy-eyed and more chilling than ever before.

With an early Rotten Tomato score of 93 percent, “It” made over $117 million its first weekend in the box office. And, though the score has dropped to a reasonable 86% on the movie review site, the critics are still raving about the new adaption.

The story starts once again with Georgie, played by Jackson Robert Scott, running with his paper boat in the rain. When his toy heads down a drainpipe, he bends down to retrieve it, which is where we first meet Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

The audience grew increasingly uncomfortable during the first peak at Skarsgård’s character. From the darkness of the sewer opening, the only thing visible were his glowing eyes – a new and extremely creepy addition to the 2017 version. We later see the full costume with cracked white face paint and a dusty appearance, allowing Skarsgård to top Tim Curry’s 1990 interpretation.

As the film develops further, we learn some of the children’s backstories, clueing us in on what they’re afraid of the most. As Bill, played by Jaeden Lieberher, sets out to find his missing brother Georgie, he and his friends, “The Loser Club,” go searching for the terrorizing clown.

The film, with almost an entire cast made up of 14-yearolds, was extremely well-acted.

However, some of the child characters were underdeveloped.

Richie Tozier, for example, played by Finn Wolfhard (better

known for his role in “Stranger Things”), has no backstory whatsoever. As we learn about all of his friends, we are left wondering why his homelife didn’t make the cut. You would think in a two-hour-long movie that we would get a feel for each character we’re supposed to connect with, but that wasn’t the case.

Where there were shortened and missing scenes, there also seemed to be irrelevant ones, like Beverly getting trash poured on her by unnamed characters, or the same bully signing Eddie’s cast.

At times, there seemed to be so many different underdeveloped storylines going on at once, I wasn’t sure where to fix my attention. Did I worry about the town bully becoming a murderer? Why was Pennywise telling him to murder instead of taunting him like the rest of the children? Is anyone going to question the murder of Bev’s father? Why do these kids have the worst potty mouths ever?

One of the most distracting details of the movie, and big reason for the film’s R rating, was the amount of swearing that occurred. The Loser Club couldn’t get out a single sentence without two to three cuss words, making it not only over-thetop and distracting, but also pushing the movie into the wrong viewership. The movie was tame enough as a horror film to be viewed by preteens, but the language pushed the limits of every adult individual in the audience, while being less scary for their hopes.

Overall, the effect of this film did its job – created a creepy clown and a super relevant Halloween costume.

The director, Andy Muschietti, captured the Stephen King feeling, while still making it watchable for those who don’t love horror films. “It” is a fantastic psychological thriller, instilling fear in fear itself.

Tips for living with your significant other AUBRIE SMITH

Kevin and I have been dating for roughly six months, and because neither of us is afraid to rush into things, we’re already living together.

Honestly, between both of our crazy schedules, I’m not sure when we would see each other if living together weren’t an option.

That being said, it has definitely been an adjustment.

Since Kevin moved into my apartment, it has taken some getting used to that my stuff isn’t only mine anymore. Perfect example: my toilet. For the first few weeks of his permanent stay, Kevin was very polite, making sure that each use of the restroom left me with a clean, put-down seat. That is no longer the case. Let me just say, you men are disgusting. Awful, really.

Second adjustment: My stuff

is never in the spot anymore, and who knows where the heck he put it. Who knew that living with your S.O. meant that everything was going to get lost?

Where you know you set your toothbrush, well, it isn’t there anymore. Why is he touching your toothbrush when he has his own? I’m not even sure that he knows.

Third adjustment: He has absolutely no regard for utilities.

Lights on when he runs to the store? You bet. Air conditioner on while he naps in a different room? Of course. Television’s on in both rooms, while both are paused on Netflix screens and he’s on his phone? Obviously.

I have never felt like a mother more in my life, but here I am, picking up everything he sets down, and shutting off everything behind him as he walks.

Fourth adjustment: Where did my personal space go? I love Kevin with my entire heart, and I knew that his living with

me would be an adjustment to my alone time. I suppose what I didn’t realize is that he would get double the alone time than I would. Meaning, when I get home and head for our room to enjoy some quiet time, he’s right there, ready to talk about his day because he’s been home from work for hours already and bored out of his mind.

Through all of these adjustments, I am so unbelievably happy to sleep next to my best friend every night.

Though our relationship is moving fast, every moment with Kevin is worth it, dirty toilet seat or not. And as I sit here and type, and he rubs his foot on my face to annoy me, I can’t help but smile because this feels so right, and I wouldn’t change his annoying habits for the world.

If you’re considering moving in with your S.O., weigh the pros and cons, and understand that more than you realize is going to change. It’s a bigger step than it feels like at first, but it can be extremely worth it. Only you know what’s right, and don’t let other people’s opinions influence a decision that directly affects you.

Collegiate Tries It: Kellen uses stool softeners KELLEN MACGREGOR In all forthcomingness, I have problems with pooping.

Somedays I don’t have a bowel movement, other days it becomes harder to complete. For the most part, this issue stems from my intestines’ sensitivity to dairy and processed foods, the former being the main catalyst for my indigestion. So, it occurred to me that I should take control of my bowels by giving them the tender loving care that they deserve – thus began my weeklong dabbling in stool softeners.

Day 1 My breakfast was as ordinary as any other morning: Kashi cereal with flax milk, a banana, soybased yogurt with granola and a glass of orange juice.

After eating, in my left hand lay a red pill, in the other lay a blue pill – I ended up taking both, since one was a stool softener and the other prevented me from having an anxiety attack.

The pill’s effects kicked in during my Pilates class.

As my knees were pinned to my chest during a warmup stretch, my stomach growled. “Uh-oh… It has begun,” I’d thought to myself.

Heading straight toward the restroom, my innards were hooting, hollering and speaking in tongues. After relieving myself, I did feel better, though the BM itself didn’t go as smoothly as I’d imagined it would.

Day 2 I’ve decided to test my bowels’ capabilities by eating a cheese quiche. Yes, I do have an intolerance to lactose, but this is purely an act of curiosity. So, I took a laxative around 7:45 a.m. and then ate the quiche around noon with a Lactaid pill. So far, thirty minutes have passed and I’ve experienced nothing but uncomfortable cramps and gas. Not impressed with the stool softener whatsoever.

Day 3 I’ve given up on stool softeners. They make me gassy, give me stomachaches and make me break out in acne, so I’ve switched to a fiber supplement instead.

Wish me luck.

Anyone who has digestive difficulties should consider taking a fiber supplement daily. When looking at my diet, it’s clear that it’s been lacking fiber, which can explain why my intestines used to hate me. Now we’re in love and no longer experiencing heartbreak, or rather, stomachbreak.

Day 5 I still cannot get over how great fiber is. I believe I’ve truly met my soulmate.

Day 6 Fiber and I are tying the knot. Our wedding will happen next week. I know, we may be taking things too quickly, but this is the first time in my life I’ve felt connected to anyone, emotionally, physically, spiritually and intestinally. The ceremony will be followed by cocktails accompanied with fiberladen hors d'oeuvres and a performance by a jazz trio.

Day 7 I see that this has shifted from a pro-stool softener piece to one that favors fiber supplements. Well, all I can say is that fiber won my heart, or rather, my intestines.

JESSICA SIEROCKI Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows. But what he tweets can be very interesting to say the least. Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me:

President made a tweet concerning DACA, which is the Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals. Trump claims that those concerned about their status shouldn’t worry, because no action will be taken in the next six months. Is anyone else a little confused as to what is

happening here?

Let’s clear things up a bit. DACA allows certain undocumented immigrants in the United States up to two years before being deferred out of the country. Well, Trump wants to shockingly end the program – can you hear my eye-roll in there? Those involved in DACA have given all of their private information to the government, and now their information is going to be used against them.

So, even though this program is supposed to allow them to stay in the country, they will be targeted and deported, even if they’ve been in the United States since they were children.

Now Trump is telling those he’s robbing not to worry, as if the tweet will make their future more certain. Classic.

Sept. 11, Trump shared a video honoring the lost lives of the September 11 attacks in 2001. This is one tweet that I can’t exactly argue with, which is why I made it a point to feature it. I may not approve of Donald Trump as president – like, at all – but I do admire that he took the time to pay tribute to that fateful day when so many Americans lost their lives.

OK, so let’s have some fun with this one. I absolutely love when President Trump spits out the term “fake news,” especially when he’s speaking in a room full of reputable journalists. It just makes me laugh, which was exactly my response when I first read this tweet.

First of all, Mr. Trump, of course there are people who are going to write books and articles about you, because you make you are a now a politician in the public eye. Don’t feel flattered or singled out, since there are dozens of works written about

every single president.

Second of all, don’t tweet things like this so that your followers will start banding together and try to overthrow the media, because I am convinced that is your end goal. The media is here to stay as a check to you, your policies and those you choose to work alongside with. And you best believe that is what the media will do.

To wrap up that gem of a tweet, I have a little bit of advice for you: If you want to hear some real “fake news,” listen to anyone who calls you a #goodpresident.

OUR VIEW: Was changing Title IX a good decision?

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos took the stage at George Mason University Sept. 8 and took the first step in a war against student survivors of sexual assault by calling for a rollback on Title IX. For those of you who don’t know what Title IX is, here’s a quick breakdown: Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that requires educational institutions to have equality for males and females.

Some areas that Title IX covers are employment, learning environment and now sexual harassment.

Under the Obama administration, the government actually took the stance of advocating for sexual violence victims. According to the Washington Post, in 2011 the Department of Education released the “Dear Colleague” letter that stated schools must take measures so that sexual violence survivors can stay in school.

Now, back to present day, Secretary DeVos wants to dismantle that advocacy. DeVos’s plan in not exactly a rollback of Title IX but instead is giving the law a little bit of an awkward facelift. The new changes will require fairness for both the accuser and the accused in a sexual violence situation.

DeVos has said that in the current system, those who are accused of committing acts of sexual violence on school campuses are not given “proper notice of the accusation or access

Illustration by Tylla Hahn to evidence against them.” She wants to make it so that both the victim and accused parties in a sexual violence case have equal access to information in order to have a fair case. That seems reasonable on paper. In actuality? Perhaps not.

First things first: if any one of these changes takes away credibility as well as concern

for victims completing their education, there are going to be major problems in the foreseeable future. What does this mean for victims? Will they be considered even less than they alreadt are?

Second of all, victims of sexual violence are already looked down upon or even blamed for what happens to them. You may have heard the

classic, “Well, you shouldn’t have been wearing that outfit,” or, “If you were talking to them at a party and wouldn’t put out, what were you expecting?” Sexual violence is not the fault of the victims. Do I need to repeat it for the people in the back?

their degrees. Don’t ask those who are sexually assaulted to give up their education, because they never asked to be sexually assaulted.

While alarm bells may be ringing by this information, there is some good news: According to the New Yorker, the policies may take months, or possibly years, to put in place.

So maybe, just maybe, someone will be able to stop her before anything new is actually put in place.

One has to question why DeVos feels the need to change policies – is it simply because Obama’s name is involved and the Trump administration wants to wipe away all memory of his presidential decisions?

Or does DeVos think that whatever changes she makes will ultimately benefit students across the nation? To me, it appears that she actually thinks this new change is a good idea, but is it a good idea for victims or for the accused?

Whatever she thinks, it won’t be well-received. I can already hear the protest chants beginning. DeVos is essentially taking away victims’ rights.

Sexual violence survivors, whatever their gender, have the right to attend school in a safe environment without feeling threatened by their assaulters.

As far as we can see, this policy reform is just the beginning of more laws that will ultimately harm more Americans than help them.

Despite one loss Lady Pioneers still rank 16th in country ADAM PRZESLAK University Center – Saturday, Sept. 9 Delta College’s Lady Pioneers traveled to Livonia, Mich., to play Schoolcraft College. In this battle of two teams with great discipline and strength Delta’s squad fell short 3-1. Despite this loss the latest coach’s poll still has Delta College at the 16th spot.

Lady Pioneer goalkeeper Kalyn Breckenridge’s 10 saves helped keep them in the game although two unanswered goals from Schoolcraft in the second half chalked up the first loss for Delta of the season. Delta took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal scored by freshman Lindsey Musser in the first half.

Musser’s goal was rivaled by Schoolcraft’s Megan Swirczek making the score at the half 1-1. Jamila Thombs, also of Schoolcraft, proceeded to score

twice in the second half securing the win for the Ocelots in the first of two meetings between the teams. The Lady Pioneers will be looking forward to their October matchup with the Ocelots of Schoolcraft that lands the game on Delta’s homefield. Schoolcraft is coming to University Center Wednesday, Oct. 11 with the game set to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Following the team’s only loss of the season the Lady Pioneers looked to redeem themselves at home against University of Michigan-Dearborn Wednesday, Sept. 13. It didn’t take very long for Delta to set the mood of the game when Paige Renshaw met the back of the net 50 seconds in.

A couple of minutes later Skylar Eckert scored her first goal of the half with the second one coming just after 33 minutes. With Eckert’s two and Renshaw’s one

the Delta squad established a 3-0 lead before the intermission.

In the second half, with a three-point lead, Delta’s team continued their domination when Lady Pioneer Elena Lippert scored 79 minutes in. The midfielder from DeWitt chalked up her first goal of the season.

In goal for Delta, Breckenridge and Hannah Bauer continued the domination into the net as they allowed nothing past them.

Next up for the Lady Pioneers, Ancilla College comes to Delta Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4:00 p.m. Then Saturday, Sept. 30, Cincinnati travels up to battle the Lady Pioneers at 1:00 p.m.

To complete the marathon of homegames, Lake Michigan College will come to Delta’s hometurf slated for a 4:00 p.m. game Wednesday, Oct. 4.

the dominant performance from the Detroit defense. As a Lions fan, I could go on all day about how great I think their defense is, but the fact is, it wasn’t just the Lions that contributed to the defense’s great play.

A horrendous looking Giants’ offense significantly contributed to Detroit’s win, as well as the Lions’ defense scoring eighteen fantasy points in standard PPR

leagues. If you’re looking for a strong defense to start on your fantasy team, I advise you look to whoever is matched up against the Giants.

Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. cannot carry the entire New York offense, at least not for very long, and even their in-game performances are beginning to slip too. But the proof is in the pudding as far as

how defenses do fantasy-wise against the Giants. In week one the Cowboys faced the Giants and Dallas’ defense put up eleven fantasy points, again in standard PPR, which a little above average scoring for defenses.

So, if your defense is holding you back, or maybe your team’s defense is on a bye week, look to see if the team playing the Giants is still available in your league.

Giving up eighteen points to the Lions and eleven to the Cowboys already this season shows that Giants are weak on the offensive side of the ball.

A look ahead at New York’s schedule doesn’t really show any teams that the Giants could really prosper against either, barring any sort of mid-season miracles turning the team around.
