Journalism degree to be offered at Delta JACK RECHSTEINER If your goal is to change the world, journalism can be one of the most immediate ways to do it.

Crystal McMorris, associate professor of English at Delta College, believes that journalism is more relevant now than ever before – that is why she and others at Delta College have worked to put together a full-fledged program that will offer an associate degree in journalism and emerging media.

“As media channels multiply and advance, there will always be a need for people who can effectively gather and verify information and present it in a way that is accurate, timely and wellcrafted. It’s a great time to become a journalist,” says McMorris, who is also the coordinator of the new journalism program.

“Old-fashioned newspapers are folding, but journalism is more important than ever. In the new media landscape, journalists are valued more than ever for their ability to provide coverage, offer context and help readers understand a rapidly changing world,” says McMorris.

Delta hosts Sarah Thomas to empower women through sports AUBRIE SMITH Event time: Feb 7, 2018 at 10 a.m.

Delta will be hosting Sarah Thomas in its annual President’s Speaker Series on Feb. 7. Thomas will speak about her experience as being the first full-time female referee in NFL history.

“We had people from athletics come to [the committee], and they said they wanted to do something about women in sports. One of the people we came across was Sarah Thomas, and there were so many things that really impressed us about her,” says David Baskind, professor of psychology.

Thomas is a Mississippi native who grew up playing sports. She obtained a full-ride scholarship for basketball and academics to the University of Mobile.

“She is the first full-time female referee in NFL history, and she is in an activity that is so male-dominated. She is such a trendsetter and groundbreaker. When we heard about her, we thought that she would be an ideal candidate to bring to the college; she can inspire people to follow their own path and not take ‘no’ for an answer and to go where others haven’t gone before,” says Baskind Thomas has been an official since 2015, when her name was added to the

NFL officiating roster along with eight male counterparts. Her hat, whistle and flag from her history-making game Sep. 13, 2015 are now on display at the NFL Football Hall of Fame.

“If you’re interested in sports, especially football, she’s going to be talking about what it’s like to be participating in the NFL. If you’re interested in issues dealing with equality for all people, she’s going to be great to hear from,” says Baskind

The event will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7 in the Delta College Lecture Theater, located in G-160.

Snowfest brings business to Frankenmuth JOE THORNTON FRANKENMUTH – The streets and sidewalks of Frankenmuth were flooded with pedestrians for the 27th annual Zehnder’s Snowfest, which spanned over five days from Jan. 24 to 29. This free, perennial festival brings flocks of people to the area to celebrate winter and indulges attendees with grand sculptures using ice and snow.

As visitors and Frankenmuth natives alike strolled the streets, remarks of wonder could be heard in passing.

“I can’t believe they can make this with just a block of snow,” exclaimed a passerby, walking through the highschool snow sculpting competition. The event features three different categories of competition separated into high school, state of Michigan and international. All three of these exhibits featuring snow sculptures are open to the public for viewing for free.

The International World Class Snow Sculpting Competition featured teams spanning from all over the world, including teams from Argentina, Canada and various states within the U.S.

is great for businesses. There are tons of people walking into shops that regularly never would, and with more people coming in, more people are making purchases. I just had a customer walk in who isn’t from here and he bought two necklaces; he wouldn’t have been here if not for Snowfest,” remarks Sanbeck.

Sanbeck adds that the higher temperatures aren’t great for sculptors, but stand to benefit the businesses.

“Even with the warmer temperatures, people don’t seem to mind too much that sculptures are melting. This is one of the largest turnouts I can remember within recent years, and it has been a great result for our business,” states Sanbeck.

After a long day of hustle and bustle everyone in Frankenmuth seemed to pause, enraptured by the fireworks that concluded the event behind the famous Zehnder’s restaurant. Afterward everyone crowded back into their cars and departed, waiting patiently again for Snowfest’s arrival next year.

Eye on Alumni: Emma Johnson speaks about trip to Israel, Palestin

MIDLAND – Emma Johnson, a former Delta College student who is now a reporter for the Midland Daily News and a freelance writer, went on a trip with a 31-person Interfaith Peace Builders delegation to Israel and Palestine last year to talk with peace activists.

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, she spoke about her activism at a presentation held at the Creative 360 in Midland and shared pictures she took as well as personal experiences.

She stated her case that Israel is using violence, genocide and discrimination to force Palestinians out of their land, and that action must be taken.

“The [West Bank] wall doesn’t keep anyone safe,” Johnson said at the presentation, referring to the border wall separating Israeli territory from Palestinian territory. “Families shouldn’t be forced to leave their homes.”

Johnson was inspired to go on the trip with IFPB after writing

two articles about the IsraelPalestine conflict for the Midland Daily News, having become more aware of the issue.

“I love writing, and I also love politics,” she said. “I also like learning new things, so with the Midland Daily News, I’ve been able to learn about things that I might not necessarily have sought out by myself.”

Being a passionate writer, Johnson also considers it important to use her writing skills for a cause, advocating for a social change. She has some words of advice for current college students who are also working toward a career in writing.

“Find something that you’re really passionate about, because then you’ll put in the hours to do it,” Johnson said. “Just write all the time and know that the first draft doesn’t have to be a finished product. Just keep doing it and give yourself self-imposed deadlines.”

Medical marijuana phenomenon has Bay County seeing green ADAM PRZESLAK A recent wave of medicinal marijuana legislation has been the talk of the town for some Bay County communities.

Pinconning Township, Bangor Township and Bay City are just a few of the communities that have either proposed or voted on local regulations for the growth, sale and transportation of medical cannabis in the past year. Each of those communities have also chose to require a nonrefundable $5,000 application fee, which has community members seeing green already. Michigan became the 13th state in the country to have some sort of medical cannabis program with the passing of the Michigan Compassionate Care Initiative in 2008.

“I loathed the drives down to Flint,” says one local medical marijuana patient who requested to remain anonymous.

“Imagine not being able to pick up your prescriptions at the local drugstore but instead having to commute for nearly an hour to pick them up.”

In January of 2017, Pinconning Township became the first Bay County community to pass an ordinance that would allow for medical marijuana

operations to open up shop within the township’s jurisdiction. Since the passing of the ordinance there have been over 50 class-C applications, according to a 2017 NBC25 article. A class-C application would allow for 1,500 plants to be grown in a facility up to 40,000-square-feet building. The township turned in their applications to the state at the end of last year and expects to see facilities up and running by spring 2018.

Bangor Township began taking applications in August last year and, according to a Mlive article, plans to limit the zones of the township in which growing, transportation and selling of cannabis can take place. Sales of the medicinal plant would only be allowed in non-residential areas while processing, transportation and growing facilities could be placed in industrial zones or commercial areas. The township is also home to the popular Wilder Road business district including the Bay City Town Center, formerly the Bay City Mall.

By the end of October Bangor Township had already approved 33 applications, some for growing and some for the production and transport sides of the industry, according to Mlive. Some of the proposed facilities are already anticipating hiring anywhere from 200 to 250 workers once production begins.

Bay City soon followed suit when the city commission voted 7-1 in approval of an ordinance allowing the production of medical marijuana under regulation in December. Bay City Mayor Kathleen Newsham opted to veto the ordinance

three days after its approval, citing concerns for buffer zones around “law enforcement centers” and schools in the city and the large number of licenses that could potentially be handed out.

On Jan. 2 the city commission voted 8-1 in favor of overriding Newsham’s veto and continuing with the application approval process. Bay City, the largest community in Bay County, plans to allow 50 licensed dispensaries, 25 class-A licensed growers, 25 class-B licensed growers and 25 class-C licensed growers to be in operation at one given time.

“I think it’s exactly what this area needs,” says the anonymous patient. “With Pinconning, Bangor and other cities jumping headfirst into this industry, I actually think Bay City is behind.”

There’s no question that with the recent financial success in states like Colorado, Washington and Oregon that legalized medical, and later recreational, marijuana, there are serious gains to be made from this industry, and Bay County looks to be the next cannabis hotspot in our area.

Yoga by Kathryn illuminates a night of inner reflection JESSICA SIEROCKI SAGINAW – Calming music swept over the dimmed room of the Saginaw Art Museum at the bi-weekly Candlelight Yoga class. Kathryn Spagnuolo, owner of Yoga by Kathryn, started offering the classes once she saw the beauty the museum has to offer.

“I like the atmosphere. It’s absolutely beautiful and I think doing yoga at beautiful spots just helps to add an element of relaxation,” says Spagnuolo.

Spagnuolo became interested in yoga when she attended Michigan State University. After moving back to the area from Chicago almost two years ago, she started her business teaching in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

“I started my business in the area two years ago. It’s my own business, but the business is me. I rent space and I move all over, so I’m like a traveling yoga instructor,” says Spagnuolo.

According to Spagnuolo, there was a shortage of yoga knowledge in the area. She does not want lack of knowledge to intimidate potential clients. Spagnuolo welcomes newcomers to her classes and does not push anyone past their own limits.

“It’s very new to people here, and everyone’s intimidated because of what they see on TV, which is a stick-thin person who looks like a model. There are different types of yoga. I think a lot of people get intimidated by thinking they’re not flexible, but they don’t need to be – yoga is for every body shape,” says Spagnuolo.

Eating with the Collegiate: Restaurants in City Market

RoRo’s featured a small but diverse and eclectic menu, with options like avocado egg rolls, flatbread sandwiches and homemade hummus with pita. The restaurant was staffed by owner Michelle Perreault and the service was fast and friendly. She took my order and then busied herself making my meal from scratch in the kitchen which was up surprisingly quickly.

I got the kimchi and jackfruit slider with a side of pita and red curry hummus. The hummus was disappointing, it lacked flavor and was simply bland and bitter. The meal was saved however by the slider. I’m a big fan of jackfruit as a meat substitute, and it was exciting to see it served in Bay City because it’s only recently been becoming popular in the United States. The slider perfectly balanced the acidity of the kimchi with the savoriness of the jackfruit and tied it all together with a creamy, tzatziki-like dressing.

Overall, while the hummus was not what I had hoped, the rest of the food was superb and the service was prompt and friendly.

That Guy’s BBQ The pulled chicken sandwich was good, though the pretzel bun was a bit too greasy. Another downside was that the chicken didn’t taste as fresh as it could’ve been.

Brewtopia

Those familiar with Bay City coffeehouses are undoubtedly familiar with the Saginaw Street location where longtime coffee roasters Brewtopia once resided – nowadays, Bay City-based Populace occupies this iconic space. Luckily, even though Brewtopia is no longer found here, one can experience the same great service and coffee without all the goofy decor in City Market, alongside numerous local vendors from a Brooklyn Boyz satellite pizzeria to an Armenian bakery that sells baklava worth tasting.

I sat down and chatted with Lexi LaLonde, a Brewtopia barista who also studies at Delta College.

LaLonde admitted that she misses the regulars she once had at the Saginaw Street space, but now looks forward to meeting new faces. Overall, LaLonde found the transition from Saginaw Street to City Market tough at first, though she now prefers the latter, commenting on the friendliness displayed by fellow vendors, which makes the entire location feel more like a co-op.

The drink I ordered, an iced latte with coconut milk and sugarless vanilla syrup, was delicious! Brewtopia will now be a go-to cafe; the superb service and delicious espresso-based drinks thoroughly impressed me.

Nicholas Bovid named new facilities director JESSICA SIEROCKI

Nicholas Bovid was named the new Director of Facilities Management at the beginning of the 2018 winter semester. University Center, Jan. 18, 2017. (Delta Collegiate/Jessica Sierocki)

Nicholas Bovid was named the new Director of Facilities Management after predecessor Larry Ramseyer retired in December of 2017. With the new title, Bovid is inheriting new construction and renovation

projects for the college.

“It’s a high level of responsibility. For the quantity and quality of all the projects going on here I’d say it’s a really exciting place to be at this time,” says Bovid.

After graduating from Midland High School, Bovid ventured to the Upper Peninsula to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Technological University. Before working at Delta, Bovid worked for Dow Corning and MidMichigan Health. During his time at Dow Corning, he went to school and completed his MBA. As new director, Bovid is responsible for overseeing projects such as the new Saginaw Center and renovations to the satellite center in Midland.

“The Saginaw Center is really exciting. Collaborating with the city of Saginaw and working through the state issues is a new experience. Just the size and the impact that it’s going to have in the downtown Saginaw region is pretty cool,” says Bovid.

Bovid is grateful for the work of Ramseyer who made his transition as smooth as possible as well as his new colleagues.

“I have to give credit to Larry Ramseyer and all of the great things he did for setting all of the projects up. He has everything laid out and planned out so well.

It’s still a learning curve, but in terms of making this transition, he’s made it as easy as he could,” says Bovid.

“My co-workers have been great and we have a great support staff here. Larry had his hands in a whole lot of projects, so I’m doing my best to get a handle of them all, but at the same time it’s all new policies and procedures.”

Bovid balances being a family man along with his new position. During college, he and his wife Kristen survived a long-distance relationship and have now been married for 11 years. Together they have three boys under the age of five, one being a newborn. Two fur babies, a cat and a dog, round out the completion of their household.

The family relocated back to

their hometown of Midland after moving out of Michigan for a brief time.

“We moved to North Carolina for a couple years before I worked for Dow. Never in a million years did I think I would move back to the Mid-Michigan area, but as luck would have it, that’s where we wound up,” says Bovid.

Bovid is looking forward to the opportunities his new job will provide.

“Completing a lot of these big projects and seeing the impact that they have, both on how it affects the college and how well the community will embrace them, puts me in a pretty unique place to be right now,” says Bovid.

“I’m so appreciative to everyone reaching out to me and helping me fill the big shoes that Larry left. There’s a lot going on and I’m excited to see how it will all turn out.”

America’s toughest warriors have come AS SEEN AROUND CAMPUS (to try) to save the day KEVIN LAZZARO The game “Earth Wars” was a disappointment to me, to put it lightly.

Everything from the gameplay style down to the art style of the game was dull.

The premise of the game is almost like the movie “Pacific Rim,” but instead of giant robot armor, it’s just a weird, skininfused bio-armor that the game says is more powerful than enemy weapons, but can’t withstand two hits from higher-level enemies. Also, instead of giant aliens, there are just lacklusterly drawn, human-sized enemies.

The gameplay consisted of almost entirely button-mashing. You could just go through the entire game slapping the “Y” button and walking toward the waypoint.

I would try to change it up sometimes by jumping around and pushing random buttons. There are no creative button combos to help escape the monotony.

The animation style reminded me of “Paper Mario,” but if it didn’t try to be good and was also an anime. The background consisted of about four or five slightly offset layers of the same terrible drawing. The game was also a side-scroller, which I didn’t really mind, in all honesty.

I found myself playing on the same

maps for over an hour at a time, though.

It became tedious and boring after the first couple of missions because of this.

Also, every half hour, you are forced to do a mission that you may or may not be prepared for. If you are not prepared, you may as well start the game over entirely.

So much for all those hours that you spent grinding the same map.

The preview pictures of the gameplay were very deceiving as well. I thought that I would be accompanied by three allies along the way, or, maybe, be able to switch between them. In actuality, there are just three gray-faced people creeping behind you the entire game, until an enemy pops up – they will conveniently disappear – when you are done fighting, they pop back up, ready to continue to do nothing but obstruct the view of the screen.

It felt like I was playing a poorly made phone game. I would not recommend this game to anybody that wants to have fun. It is not worth the 5 dollars that the Nintendo eShop is charging for it.

Delta poets lead spoken-word renaissance in Tri-Cities JACK RECHSTEINER I was one of nearly 75 people gathered together at Counter Culture in Saginaw on a Tuesday night. Under cozy, dim lighting numerous patrons of the arts from all over the area filled the venue until it was standing room only – and even then people were pouring out into the room next to the stage. All were trying to get a place to see the headlining event of the night: local poetry.

With a turnout that went well over the expected capacity for the event, it’s hard to say that poetry isn’t thriving in the area.

Christopher Giroux, assistant director of the Saginaw and Bay City Writing Centers, took the stage to start the night. After a short introduction, Giroux thanked everyone who had made Still Life possible because of their actions, such as submitting their poems to the publication and coming out on a cold Tuesday night to support the writing that’s being made in the area.

Still Life is a community arts journal, which is a collection of poetry and photography

by Saginaw and Bay City residents. The publication is put together by the Saginaw and Bay City Community Writing

Centers along with SVSU with the intention of creating new opportunities for artists in the area and to have a literary platform to spotlight writers in the area.

“It’s all been about supporting writing and art. says Giroux.

The affair was organized by the Saginaw and Bay City Community Writing Centers to celebrate the release of the first annual issue of Still Life, but it focused on hearing local poets perform pieces. Giroux gave the stage over to Benjamin Champagne, owner of Counter Culture as well as a poet in Still Life, who conducted the poetry readings and open mic competition for the night.

“The infrastructures of all these groups, like the writing centers and poetry centers, have banded people together and galvanized them, so that when these things happen, there are whole factions of talented writers coming to read and support other artists,” says Champagne.

enthusiastic crowd during the open mic portion of the event.

“I see so many people who care about art and writing in our little part of the world who want to share that with each other, and it’s amazing. There are no other words. It’s simply amazing,” says Giroux.

The turnout in Saginaw was just the beginning of the poetry the Tri-Cities saw that week.

Only two days after the Still Life release open mic, the Tri-City Center for Poetry had a separate open mic at The Loch Coffee Company in Midland. The parking lot filled up so quickly for the event that attendees eager to be there had their cars parked up and down the curbsides of the surrounding streets.

That Thursday night, more than 50 people were packed inside the coffeehouse to listen to poetry. The crowd was made up from people of all ages who had come from all over the area, with only a handful of who were also at the open mic at Counter Culture earlier that week.

by Delta English Professor Mark Brown, who thanked everyone for being there and was the first to perform for the open mic

to break the ice of the January evening.

“We put on these events in the hopes of encouraging the love, adoration and practice of poetry in the Tri-City area. I would love for there to be more of a culture surrounding it because of people wanting it to happen,” says Brown.

Out of all the people in attendance, 20 writers signed up to read while the audience listened with rapt attention to each poet. There was an energy of community charging the night, with the crowd welcoming each person to the stage with encouraging claps and applauding them with appreciative snapping fingers after they performed. The first round of poetry had left the audience wanting more, so by a vote of enthusiastic cheers the room agreed upon having a second reading from willing poets to close out the night.

“It’s really satisfying to see the community out to support something like poetry, which gets such short shrift in our culture. Generally speaking, the 21st century doesn’t care much about poetry or the written word, so it’s fantastic coming to

an event like this and having all these people here,” says Brown.

This is just the start of poetry that’s happening in the Tri-Cities for this year.

The Tri-City Center for Poetry will be putting on another open mic night on Thursday, Feb. 22 at Golden Gallery in Bay City.

The Theodore Roethke Festival, which celebrates Saginaw native Theodore Roethke, who has been called one of the most accomplished poets of his generation, takes place once every three years and will be happening from March 23 to 28 in 2018.

The Saginaw and Bay Writing Centers are also currently accepting entries for the Write Like Roethke Poetry Contest, as well as the 2019 edition of Still Life. Entries for the Write Like Roethke Poetry Contest are due by March 2, 2018, and info on submission guidelines can be found at svsu.edu/roethke.

Pressure builds for Lady Pioneers

UNIVERSITY CENTER – On Saturday, Feb. 3rd the Delta Pioneers faced against the Wayne Community College Warriors in the first annual Delta College homecoming basketball game. The crowd on this Saturday afternoon was about 50 people larger than the usual crowd with many bystanders wearing white T-shirts.

The T-shirts were sold as part of the homecoming white-out game, and the Pioneers were determined to put on a show for their fans.

Following the opening tip-off the Pioneers set the tone of the game coming out energetic and putting points on the board early. The Warriors were forced to take a time-out as the Pioneers got off to a hot start.

Delta College didn’t let off the throttle at any point in the half, not even in the last seconds. The gym erupted as freshman Evan Andersen tacked on another two points as the half dwindled, making the score 44-22. The Pioneers went into the locker room at halftime with double the score of the Warriors.

The second half became a rolling highlight reel for the Pioneers with electric plays on offense and showing fortitude on defense. Jalen Fykes featured his usual dunking abilities and led the

Pioneers’ scoring attack with 17 points. He was helped in large part by his teammates Virgil Walker Jr. with 15 points, five assists and Peyton Miller with 11 points, seven assists.

Fans in the crowd marveled throughout the contest at the Pioneers’ athleticism on the offensive side as they showcased their explosive playmakers.

“It’s like he has springs in his shoes,” remarked an excited member of the crowd after Fykes elevated for a slam dunk.

The height of the Pioneers’ lead came late in the second half when the score reached 70-38 while the Delta team simply outpaced the Warriors. The Pioneers didn’t let up until the final buzzer sounded, finishing the game with a score of 80-60.

The Pioneers, now unranked, hold an overall record of 14-3. Unfortunately, all three of their losses have come from opponents within their conference. The importance of the conference record comes into play with the playoffs fast approaching, but regardless the Pioneers plan to finish strong. Delta looks forward to their next game at Oakland, whom they beat 96-69 earlier this season.

JOE THORNTON UNIVERSITY CENTER - After a hardfought game by the Lady Pioneers against St. Clair Community College, the girls in evergreen fell short by six points and lost. The final score 63-69 loomed over the heads of the Delta players like a dark cloud as they walked into the locker room.

This loss is a continuation of the struggles we have seen all season from the Delta College women’s basketball team with new head coach Shonda Long.

After this game, the Lady Pioneers find themselves in a hole with their ninth loss of the season. The team has been unable to find consistency on the offensive side of the ball, with a field goal percentage of only 33.7 percent. On the defensive side, difficulties persist in the paint with boxing out. These struggles on both sides of the ball have led to another loss in the standings, and tension is rising for the Lady Pioneers Although things seem bleak from the outside looking in, the Lady Pioneers have a long season ahead of them. With 13 games in the books, there are another 10 games on the forefront. If the Lady

Pioneers are able to get it together, they can substantially improve their overall record and make a late season push.

The key to success for this team starts with sophomores Harmany Williams and Rylee Pankow stepping up as leaders and giving this team the spark that they need. It is essential that this team is able to come together and work as a unit throughout the final stretch. There has to be an emphasis that resonates within these players that there are two halves in a game, both of which must be played with full energy.

Fragments of this team’s potential and determination have been shown in their recent wins against Oakland and Mott.

The Lady Pioneers were able to harness that energy, winning their most recent games against Alpena and Wayne. After these wins their record sits at 6-10 and hope to continue this winning streak in their next game at Oakland, seeking revenge after losing to them earlier this season.

SPORTS is an astounding disparity in viewers between the NBA and the WNBA with an average attendance of 17,000 at every NBA game the WNBA’s average attendance of 7,000 seems less significant. About 10,000 people less significant.

This apparent fact brings about multiple questions, even for an avid sports like myself. Why do we as a society favor watching males in sports? In a country striving for gender equality, why do we separate athletic competition between males and females?

Although there isn’t a professional sport that is co-ed yet, here is a list of females that have made great strides in progressing women within the sports industry.

Sarah Thomas is currently a referee for the National Football League and made national headlines when she was hired in 2017 as she was the first full-time official in NFL history.

Manon Réaume took a giant leap for all women within sports when she was signed by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992. Réaume remains the only woman to compete on ice in the NHL when she participated in in a preseason matchup against the Boston Bruins in 1993.

Becky Hammon demanded respect during her tenure

11 as a player in the WNBA but more recently has found success as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. When she was hired in 2014 Hammon became the first woman to coach for an NBA team.

Danica Patrick broke the gender barrier within automobile racing when she won the 2008 Indy Japan 300. Patrick cemented her name in history with this victory, becoming the first woman to win a race in the IndyCar Series.

Ronda Rousey showed how tough women can be in her multiple UFC fights. Rousey was renowned for her physical dominance and was a national topic when she started her UFC career with a 10 match winning streak, most of which didn’t continue past the first round.

All of these women are examples of progress in the industry and hopefully just the beginnings of this revolution. As more women are participating within football and other sports that previously only featured males it’s only a matter of time before we see the first female within the NFL. Never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do and let these women serve as examples that anything is possible as long as you set your mind to it.

The Eagles keep Tom’s left hand barren JOE THORNTON Millions of viewers worldwide tuned in to watch Super Bowl LII, featuring the Philadelphia Eagles going up against the New England Patriots. In a game that featured the underdogs going against the dynasty, the Eagles were able to fly high to a victory, making them world champions.

This Super Bowl was one that you’ll regret missing if you did. While many expected a defensive beatdown, the game turned into an offensive shootout amassing 1,152 yards of total offense, the most in any postseason game in NFL history.

The story of this game came from backup quarterback Nick Foles, who had to fill the shoes of MVP candidate Carson Wentz after a season-ending injury in week 14 against the Rams. Many analysts and fans alike wondered if he would be able to hold up under the spotlight, but Foles did much more than just hold up.

Foles threw for 373 yards with three touchdowns and one interception with a 106 passer rating. He performed as if he’d been doing this all his career, playing in Super Bowls one after another. It’s hard to believe this was his first, as he came out like it was just another game and unphased by all the noise throughout the week.

The story of the backup Foles’s performance was only one of many subplots within the game. Through four quarters, Eagles’ receiver Alshon Jeffery had to battle against his college roommate Stephon Gilmore at cornerback, LeGarrette Blount got his vengeance against his former team and Doug Pederson put on one of the gutsiest head coaching performances of all time in only his second year.

Despite the Patriots’ loss, nobody can discredit Tom Brady’s tenacious performance in this game. Many will look back and say it was his fault the Pats lost due to his fumble late in the fourth quarter, but he did everything he could to keep the Patriots alive in this contest. Brady amassed 505 passing yards, the most in Super Bowl

history, in his pursuit to capture his sixth ring. He went 28/48 passing with no interceptions and left everyone on the edge of their seats until the very end of the game.

Undoubtedly the most captivating play of the game was the touchdown catch by Nick Foles. Yes, you read that correctly. Some trickery and deceit from Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson led to a touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton, who played quarterback in college, to the Eagles interim quarterback Foles. On fourth down with one yard separating the Eagles from the endzone, Foles hauled in the pass with ease for six points. With less than a minute in the half, this play gave the Eagles a 2212 lead heading into the second half.

Regardless, congratulations to the Eagles for knocking the Patriots off their ivory tower and bringing them back to reality. Now, all NFL fans are forced to deal with the long offseason, with no hint of football until the NFL draft starting on Apr. 26.

With a long offseason of speculation awaiting, this game brings about many questions.

What is next for the Patriots? Is this the end of an era?

What is Tom Brady going to do? What about Belichick?

The Patriots are losing both their offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs. With Josh McDaniels leaving for the Colts and Matt Patricia likely coming to the Lions, the Pats will have a blank slate starting the next season. Many are hoping this defeat will be enough to put an end to Tom Brady and Belichick’s reign, but don’t count them out just yet. The Patriots will head into the 2018-2019 season with goals of redemption and with a lot to prove.

For the Eagles going forward, it’ll be interesting to see what will happen going forward. They were able to put on a dominant performance in the Super Bowl and go into the next season with arguably the best offensive lines and defensive lines in the NFL, all with Nick Foles under center. Will they be even more dominant when the young

star Carson Wentz returns from his injury?

All these questions will be answered in about a year’s time, but for now NFL fans must find a way to cope with a substantial football drought. Here’s to hoping next season will be just as exciting and surprising as this one.

Hate shouldn’t be tolerated in 2018

Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, black supremacists, anti-LGBTQ, the KKK, anti-Muslim groups. Now more than ever hate groups such as these are starting to become more prevalent in our society.

Records of hate crimes are being broken every year. While the First Amendment protects the rights of these groups, one has to question where the line is drawn between what is freedom of speech and what is derogatory hate.

We, as a staff of journalists, know just how important the First Amendment of the Constitution is. It protects the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition. Every American has the right to their own opinions and are able to express them. But when people start getting hurt, and even killed, because of an opinion of an individual or group,

that’s when it becomes a crime.

Hate crimes were on the rise in 2017.

CNN states that the number of hate groups has risen to 917 since 2014, a 17 percent increase since the beginning of the 2016 presidential campaign.

According to NBC News, in 2017 at least 18 out of 34 extremist-related deaths in the United States were caused by white supremacist hate groups. Compare this to 2016 statistics where white supremacist groups were responsible for nine deaths.

The number of Islamophobic groups has tripled within the last year. The Southern Poverty Law Center analyzed the increase from 35 of these groups in 2015 to 101 in 2017. Ku Klux Klan members fell from 190 groups to 130 in the past few years, but they are still a prevalent group throughout the United States.

All American citizens are protected by the Constitution to free speech and peaceful assembly. However, all words and speeches do not fall under that category.

For example: we do not have the right, through freedom of speech, to create a rally. If words in a “peaceful” assembly can trigger one member to do something harmful, the words are no longer protected by the Constitution.

Therefore, the umbrella of hate groups cannot use the First Amendment to their advantage as a “constitutional right” because they have no right to cause harm to other people – which they do through their words. With that logic, hate groups are really unconstitutional in themselves and should not be able to exist.

We have an opportunity in 2018 to decrease these staggering statistics. There’s no reason that people who have differing opinions have to instill terror in and/or kill other people to establish power. There is such a thing as agreeing to disagree.

The fact that there are people currently in power in the United States who are inciting hate is just more reason for us to oppose it.

Must we forget that every U.S. citizen

came to America as an immigrant?

America is deemed a “melting pot” for a reason. Our culture is rich with different religious and political beliefs, not to mention ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. Every individual is so different, yet we all identify as Americans. If other people don’t believe in what traits an individual represents, their opinion is valid. However, a line is crossed when people are killed because of the color of their skin or what religion they practice.

Hate groups should not be tolerated.

The amount of violence that is occuring on their behalf shouldn’t be a reality.

The more people willing to speak out against these intolerable acts, the better.

Americans need to join together and learn that differences are OK, opinions can be tolerated without the need to agree to them and that all humans deserve to live their life to the fullest. 2018 shouldn’t be remembered as a year in hate, but rather, a year for acceptance.

Trump of sexual misconduct or assault, according to CNN. Whether it’s being a creep in the ladies’ room at a pageant or behind locked doors with a microphone on, Trump has proven himself to value women as much as he values poor people. For those of you who don’t get the comparison, he doesn’t give a shit.

Period. Seeing all of these women coming forward and finally having their voices heard is so empowering, but the fact that the president is still in the White House, instead of behind bars because of his actions, is just as sickening as that tweet.

Not convinced? How about the fact that Hitler tirelessly discredited all the media outlets much like Trump does. In fact, Trump has done such an effective job of saying all media outlets are “fake news” that a Michigan man threatened to shoot up CNN Jan. 23 because of “fake news” allegations. But you didn’t see Trump addressing this brainwashed event.

Now, I realize that as president, Trump needs to acknowledge days in remembrance for tragedies such as the Holocaust. However, that doesn’t mean I can have any respect for him just because he posts an acknowledgement of this tragedy when he is inciting division among races and degrading media outlets when he isn’t happy about a news story.

Democrats have a strong position on education. Just because the Democrats don’t want your wall to go up doesn’t mean they’re obstructing anything. It’s a common practice of back and forth before putting a policy in place.

My last rant about Trump doesn’t come with a tweet but a lack of one. By now, everyone in Michigan is probably aware of the nationwide coverage of Larry Nassar and his sexual abuse of his gymnastic patients. How is it that Trump can start a Twitter war with Jay-Z but can’t acknowledge this beyond awful news story, especially when he always feels the need to butt his opinion in on less important news events. Is it possible that he doesn’t want to state anything about Nassar because he knows he will face the lashback of thousands of women because Trump himself has been accused of sexual misconduct? Is it a coincidence or possibly a strategic move on his part to save himself from further torment?

Jan. 20 Trump tweeted about the Women’s March and how women should “get out there now to celebrate the historic milestones and unprecedented success and wealth creation that has taken place over the last 12 months.” Are you kidding me? First of all, the grammar nerd in me has to point out that you’re the president and obviously don’t know how to structure a sentence using a comma. Second of all, Mr. Trump, what the hell have you done for women?

Collegiate Tries It: Jack learns to live without a cellphone JACK RECHSTEINER At first, when I watched my phone get demolished by a car trunk slamming down at full force, I was a little upset – understandably. I still had a text to send to a friend about dinner plans and a game of Words with Friends I needed to make my move in so that Carol_TN2324 would know who’s the best (it’s me.) And the reason my phone met its tragic, premature end made it even more upsetting. I wanted to be a good person and help my roommate take some things out to her car, so I turned on my phone’s flashlight and set it on the edge of the trunk to see where to put these boxes. That’s the exact moment a sudden gust of wind turned the trunk lid into a smartphone guillotine and sent it careening down so quickly I couldn’t do anything but watch. My phone had just been compacted into an unusable brick of shattered glass.

“That’s what I get for trying to do something nice,” I sighed.

Then after going through the five stages

of grief in (roughly) 20 minutes, it dawned on me that this IS what I deserved. I had been saying that I wanted to stop using a smartphone for a long time, but kept making excuses not to. “I need my phone for class. I need it for directions. I need it so I can have seven consecutive alarms to wake me up in the morning.” Finally, something out of my control had done what I didn’t have the guts to do. In that lightning-fast moment, I had been freed from my phone. My life felt like it had been lightened a little. So, for this week’s Collegiate Tries It, we’ll see if my hopes for a disconnected life match up to the realities of it.

For the first night of not having a phone, I went to bed early to make sure I would wake up in time for class without an alarm clock. Falling asleep earlier than normal was easy without the bright distraction of a phone keeping me awake in bed. I woke up groggily, but with no idea if I was up in time to get to class. I

realized how heavily I relied on my phone to check the time – I don’t have a single clock in my apartment. After checking the time on the stove’s clock, there was a good amount of time before I had to leave. I got ready and grabbed a notebook to keep in the pocket I normally have my phone in case I needed to keep track of anything.

I jotted down a few phone numbers so I wouldn’t forget them in the case of an emergency and was on my way to Delta.

This turned into the routine for the next few days (I did eventually buy an alarm clock though.) My phone had been my main way of listening to music in the car, so on the drives to Delta I flipped through the radio stations for the first time in a while. I wound up taking a nostalgia trip back to 2008 and made a stack of mix CDs for the six-disk changer in my car. The rest of the week went by quickly, with classes and work, and I almost forgot about my phonelessness... Until I noticed I had been spending my days a lot more engaged with

things. I didn’t check my phone every ten minutes in class to see if it had been more than ten minutes yet, I wasn’t scrolling through my notifications while trying not to run into people in the hallway, and I didn’t have this constant urge to keep looking at my phone to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.

It was like this fresh breath of air had been breathed into my life. I had a certain amount of freedom and connection to my life that I hadn’t had in a long time. My free moments weren’t filled with simply trying to kill time on my phone, but had me invested in the things that were going on around me. It’s been more than a week since I first decided to ditch life with my phone, and I don’t think that I’m going to be replacing it anytime soon. Overall, the first few days of being unplugged had required some adjustments to my routine, but I am feeling better because of it.

Galentine’s Day is a day of ladies celebrating ladies. The holiday, celebrated on Feb. 13, brings girlfriends together for brunch, drinks and friendship.

Meet the Staff KEVIN LAZZARO videographer

Kevin Lazzaro is a videographer for the Collegiate. He is finishing off his electronic media degree in the summer. He currently owns a local photography and advertising studio and is an aspiring film director. Watching movies and consuming way too much cookie butter are his two favorite past times.

Chippewa Nature Center offers a unique outdoor experience MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI

MIDLAND – On the day of the rare Super Blue Blood Moon, the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland opened its doors to the public at 6 p.m. for the Full Moon Stroll.

Jeanne Henderson, an interpretive naturalist and instructor for the Nature Center,

hosted the event and led a group of hikers on an evening walk through the woods that lasted until 7:30 p.m.

“I really enjoy being outdoors and learning about all the animals and plants that live here and in our region, and I continually learn new things

every time,” says Henderson about her experience as an interpretive naturalist. “I enjoy learning about nature.”

The group met with Henderson inside the welcome center. Hikers brought along flashlights as well as binoculars for viewing the moon when it appeared.

Henderson also made the Full Moon Stroll an educational experience, leading the hikers through the Nature Center’s trails and teaching them about various aspects of nature such as wild animals – including owls, deer and raccoons – plants and listening for wildlife.

“I enjoy [...] getting people interested in birds and learning about birds and habitats,” says Henderson, “and teaching people about native plants and how they're so connected to all of our animals and how the animals need to have the native plants for food, shelter and cover.”

During the walk, the group made frequent stops at various landmarks in the trail, including the area where the Pine River and Chippewa River intersect, the beech maple woods and the sugar house, where maple syrup is made every year.

The Full Moon Stroll was a unique experience for many visitors.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to be on the Nature Center trails at night, when they’re typically closed to the public,” says Jamie Hockstra of Midland. “It was nice to be able to be out in nature after dark when our other senses are heightened.”

just one of many opportunities provided by the Chippewa Nature Center to go outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and scenery.

“We have a wide range of programs; some of them are for family, some of them are just for kids,” says Henderson. “We have kayaking trips. We have birding and natural history field trips.

We also encourage people to volunteer here.”

There are a lot of volunteer opportunities for people to get involved in, both indoor and outdoor, to help further the Nature Center’s mission of providing education about local wildlife and the environment.
