experiences with the audience, explaining why FAN was created.

Davis said that when her daughter was in treatment for her addiction, she had to attend six meetings with Families Anonymous and realized that she had not been dealing with addiction in the right way.

“As odd as it sounds, my daughter started her recovery when I started my recovery,” she said during her speech, making clear that opioid addiction is a family disease not just affecting the addict. “We’re as sick as our addicts are.”

Davis went on to describe what FAN has accomplished in the struggle against the widespread opioid crisis, including a series of legislations

During the meeting, anonymous families came forward and discussed their problems with addiction and their road to recovery. Delta professor Lori Zolkowski, who also spoke at the event, remarked that her own daughter is 22 months in recovery from addiction as of Christmas Eve. “One of the unique things about FAN is that it’s the only meeting that you’ll go to, where addicts and their parents come together and talk about this problem,” said Judge Davis. “And where community leaders come together with those two groups and start looking for solutions and how they can help.”

FAN currently operates 20 chapters in the state of Michigan, including the newly launched chapter in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Delta College says, ‘I still have a dream’ JACK RECHSTEINER While other universities in the area are treating Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a reason for a long weekend to procrastinate on homework and do laundry, Delta College is keeping Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream alive.

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Delta College made the executive decision to stay open just as they have in previous years. Instead of closing on this monumental Monday, Delta College held events meant to observe his work as opposed to taking an easy day off.

as well as a fundraising drive where anyone can donate new or gently used hats, scarves and mittens to keep others warm this winter.

Moriah Farner, a student at Delta, participated in helping put together some of these nonperishable meals.

When asked for comment about her feelings on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she had some “strong feelings as a proud halfblack woman.”

“Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a meaningful moment in black history, but everything wears off after time. That means we need to continue to work to keep the dream he was after alive,” says Farner.

Bond receives Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. award JOE THORNTON Business services specialist Veronica Bond has been named as the recipient of the Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. award presented by Delta College’s Black Faculty and Staff Association. This award is given to a staff member that visibly possesses the characteristics of Martin Luther King Jr. in their community and on the Delta Co llege campus.

When sitting down with Bond to discuss the award, she exhibited a calm, humble energy.

Q: What does it mean to you to be the 2018 recipient of Delta College’s Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Award?

A: It means a lot, because if you think of all the things that Martin Luther King Jr. went through, to be seen as holding some of the characteristics that he had – and for people to see those in me – is humbling. I don’t see myself in that way. I am in no way a bad person, but he was just so great. For other people to see me in a way that he is seen is a great honor.

Q: What characteristic of Martin Luther King Jr. do you feel is the most important for people to have?

A: Being fair to everyone. It’s all about equality and treating others as you would want to be treated.

Q: What is the goal of the Black Faculty and Staff Association at Delta College?

A: To come together. Without unity, nothing gets finished. When you’re separated, you aren’t as powerful.

Alison Ginter, faculty member of the Office of Student and Civic Engagement, was in charge of a Martin Luther King Jr. trivia contest. There were similar trivia contests set up at the Ricker and Midland Centers as well. Zekiye Salman, another member of the Office of Student and Civic Engagement, was also there to help with the events.

“To me, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about continuing his legacy and most importantly recognizing that his work is not yet done,” says Salman.

Q: Why is it important to you that we celebrate MLK day and the things that he stood for?

A: It shows the importance of unity and celebrates the great man that he was. He was able to make

change in a nonviolent way, and in a world with enough violence already, it’s important that we keep him in our memory. It’s easy for something that’s out of sight to be out of mind, but this holiday keeps him at the forefront of our memory and helps us celebrate his importance.

Q: If you could ask Martin Luther King Jr. one question, what would it be?

A: Why did you feel the need to fight nonviolently?

Why did you feel you were the one that had to do it? Nobody told him that he had to try to change the system or had the bravery to question it before him, and that’s what makes him so unique.

JESSICA SIEROCKI Earn free money for college Delta College scholarship applications are now open for students returning to Delta in the Fall.

Applications are being accepted until Feb. 22.

For graduating students, graduate student award applications are being accepted until Feb. 2. The graduate awards are for students who earned an associate degree from Delta College in the spring or fall of 2017 as well as meeting graduation requirements at the end of winter 2018.

The Nickless Family Scholarship is open until Feb. 22 for those students choosing to further their education at a four-year university upon leaving Delta. Students are eligible if they have earned 58 or more credits from Delta College before transfering and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Delta College Public Safety took a complaint regarding the theft of product from a beverage dispensing machine. A large amount of product was reported as missing from the machine from September 2017 to January of 2018 by the vendor. The complaint remains under investigation.

Jan. 11, 2018

Delta College Public Safety took a complaint regarding visitor conduct. The complaint was non-criminal and was referred to the College Title IX Coordinator for review.

Jan. 14, 2018

Delta College Public Safety took a complaint of theft from a laboratory supply room. The alleged theft involved missing sugar compounds and lights. The thefts were alleged to have occurred sometime in 2017, prior to Nov. 14, 2017.

Delta College Public Safety responded to one hit-andrun traffic crash in the parking lot and one cardeer accident on a public roadway. Delta College Public Safety also responded to four medical and injury reports.

One room. One hour. One chance to be victorious. As the escape room industry continues to grow, the Collegiate became increasingly excited about venues in the Tri-City area and how they compare to bigger, more established businesses around Michigan.

For those who have never been to an escape room, here’s a quick breakdown. You and your team have one hour to complete whatever mission your chosen room requires of you. You must put your minds together to search every nook and cranny of the space in order to solve a succession of clues that will lead to your release. If you run out of time, well, you just have to live with those feelings of heartbreak when it comes.

Five Collegiate members walked into Paradox Point, an escape room establishment located in Bay City. The normal façade of the building gave no indication of of what mysteries lurked inside.

With two escape room options, Nevermore and Benedict’s Study, Paradox Point offers games that appeal to different interests, bringing teams together as they try to solve the puzzles lain before them.

The Collegiate entered the Nevermore room, sent to find Edgar Allan Poe’s hidden works. Not really knowing what to expect, we began our journey by tearing through the room as fast as

we could, trying to figure out exactly where to begin. When we were stuck, we need only ask the television monitor, in true millennial fashion, where a faceless stranger gave us helpful hints to continue our journey to beat the clock.

We could feel the gears in our brains turning as we pieced together various clues found in desk drawers, books, hidden compartments and locked boxes. Each person in our group had a particular type of knowledge that, when used collectively, furthered us closer and closer to escaping. As a team, we beat the clock and mastered the room with three minutes and 30 seconds left.

The puzzles and clues in the escape room were challenging yet enjoyable. Whether you’re looking for a night of team-building opportunities for employees, want to go head-to-head against your friends or are just looking to try something new, the escape rooms at Paradox Point are the answer.

Winter vehicle hacks AUBRIE SMITH We’re having a pretty rough winter this year when it comes to icy roads and scraping vehicles. Cleaning off your car after some freezing rain, followed by snow and sub-zero temperatures can be a hassle – but here are a few vehicle hacks that will help save you some time and money.

Eating with the Collegiate: Fuzzy’s

Collegiate Rating: Fuzzy’s is a hidden little gem in Old Town Saginaw where you can enjoy ice cream or a nice meal. Their oldschool-diner feel creates a homey environment that both relaxes you and makes you wish the waitstaff were on rollerblades.

The staff: Walking into Fuzzy’s was like taking a step back a generation. We were greeted at the door by a woman scooping ice cream instead of your typical hostess. Our staff sat themselves and read the shakes and malts board in anticipation. Our waitress addressed us pretty quickly, and we had high hopes for quick service. However, as our visit continued, the restaurant seemed to pick up in service.

The waitress only checked on us once, our refills came with our bills and we were given misinformation about our desert choices. The service was subpar, to say the least, and is one main reason for the 3.5-star rating, but we’re hoping that they were just understaffed.

The food: The French fries were the best part of every staff member’s meal. They were gold and crisp to perfection.

One staff member had the classic chicken and waffle platter. After receiving the dish, she was then warned about the intense, individualistic taste of the waffle they serve. Shouldn’t she have been warned before? But we’ll keep that in the staff review.

The burgers were cooked well and had more of a

homemade feel than regular restaurants. The food had great pricing and allowed us to get desert without worrying about our pocketbooks. We give the burger 4.5 stars – they forgot the pickles.

Overall: Fuzzy’s was a good experience if you’re looking for a fast, cheap dining experienced. The prices were great for the portions and experience. The food, pricing and ice cream gave the restaurant 4.5 star, but the unfortunate service dropped it to 3. The Collegiate recommends Fuzzy’s to any Tri-City individual looking for an oldtown dining experience, but bring some cash! Fuzzy’s has a small fee for any card run under 15 dollars.

Crack out the vinegar Mix your own de-icer by using three-parts vinegar with one-part water. Spray this on your windshield to eliminate existing ice and prevent more from forming.

This can be a real lifesaver when you’re in a pinch for time or misplaced your ice scraper.

Let Mother Nature defrost your car

Such an easily overpassed thought: Park with your windshield facing the east. As the sun comes up, Mother Nature will do all the hard work for you. Combine that with some of these other vehicle hacks, and your morning will be a breeze.

Cooking spray is your friend outside of the kitchen too

Everyone talking about the record-low temps about to hit tonight? Get one step ahead of the next morning and spray the cracks of your car doors with cooking spray.

Just like it keeps your cookies from sticking to the pan, it will ensure that your door doesn’t freeze to the rubber.

Forgetting your kitty litter in the trunk: the positive to procrastinating Keeping some heavy kitty litter in your trunk can be helpful for two reasons. First, the heavy litter can help weigh down the back of your vehicle, preventing you from getting stuck in thick snow – because physics.

Second, if you do get stuck, you have some kitty litter to help give you the traction you need to get out of the poopy situation.

Delta College to host human trafficking awareness event AUBRIE SMITH “Break the Chain,” an award-winning documentary, will be shown on Delta College’s main campus Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.

The documentary focuses on individuals interviews, such as survivors of human trafficking as well as senators, legal service agencies and law enforcement officers. “Break the Chain” informs viewers on the personal connection the society has to human trafficking and the power individuals have to support it or “break the chain.”

After the film, there will be a panel with the directors of the film and other human trafficking activists throughout the community.

This event is free and open to the public.

Counter Culture rings in the new year JACK RECHSTEINER A small but enthusiastic crowd filled the venue of Counter Culture to ring in the new year on Jan. 4.

The 0-degree weather didn’t deter the devoted music enthusiasts from attending Counter Culture’s first show of the the year, which brought together a mix of Tri-Cities locals and two out-of-town acts. The lineup featured one full band performing alongside four different solo acts, but the lack of backing instrumentation didn’t detract from the musicianship displayed by each performer.

“Why am I here? The better question is, why wouldn’t I be here? Counter Culture is the epicenter of things to do around here, there’s no better place to be,” says show attendee Matt Verduyn.

Alyssa Ledesma opened the show with an emotional set of acoustic songs, who was followed by Noah Shankool, who performed songs under his aptly named band Shankool. Shankool’s set was comprised of a mix of originals and covers with the final song featuring Ledesma on backup vocals, which she recorded on the album version. You can find Shankool’s album “Introspection” on shankool.bandcamp.com.

After Shankool, the five-piece, alt-rock band Out the Car Window took the stage. Hailing from Chicago, they made the drive to Saginaw to perform because of their connection and friendship with local musician Mark Duhaime who helped put the show together. Out the Car Window played a roaring set of songs, most of which can be found on their latests EP that came out Jan. 11. You can find their latest EP and more at outthecarwindow. bandcamp.com.

Brandon Stasi played following their set, introducing themselves under their musical act’s name Caving.

Caving played an intense catalog of emotional and raw songs to the backdrop of their reverb-drenched guitar.

Stasi made their way to Saginaw and was happy to get to play Saginaw, the hometown of their friends in Hot Mulligan and Forest Green. You can download Stasi’s music as Caving for free at cavingmusic.bandcamp.com.

Closing out the night was David Beuthin, performing under his solo name Boyteen. His set was a combination of originals and solo renditions from the other bands he has played in, including Forest Green and Vital Sea. Boyteen’s music can be found at boyteen.bandcamp.com.

‘Disenchanted’ takes female power to a new level JESSICA SIEROKI If you’ve never heard of “Disenchanted,” I would describe it as a big “f––k you” to the men who wrote the original Disney classic princess tales. Nothing made me happier to see that the cast of six women expressing thoughts that every woman thinks of when watching these old-school musicals.

Why does the prince always have to save the princess? Why are they drawn with completely unproportional waists? And most importantly, what exactly happened once they all lived “happily ever after?”

The first thing I noticed when walking into the theater was the fully stocked bar, which got me to thinking, “What have I gotten myself into?” This was no fairytale musical where the characters were brighteyed with rosy cheeks. On the contrary, it was a glimpse into the women behind the fairytale characters and how they wanted to change their stories.

Every character was not what you would expect. Rapunzel has a unibrow, Ariel likes to throw back a few beers and Princess Jasmine isn’t even justified because that’s not even her real name.

And Mulan? Well, let’s just say that I’ll leave it up to you to find out for yourself.

Trust me, it’ll be worth it.

I have to give kudos to each cast member for putting so much power and emotion into their singing. The theater wasn’t big enough to hold the notes of Tara Besso Ell, who played a badass Snow White, and there were a few times that I actually got goosebumps.

The songs reflected the hilarity of the play’s premise, my personal favorites being a tie between “Without the Guy,” sung by Brooke Gomez as Mulan, and “All I Want to do is Eat,” sung by the entire company. Let’s be real – every girl on the planet has had to make the decision of eating what you want and meeting society’s standards of beauty. I think that’s why I enjoyed this show so much. It was beyond funny for sure, but it also brought a truth to it that I think every girl needs to hear.

But viewers beware! The feisty spectacle is rated R because of adult language and some subject matter.

Though if I’m being honest, that content is half of the fun. Tickets are $26 and are still on sale now for the following performance dates: Thursday, Jan. 25 – 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 26 – 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 27 – 7:30 p.m.

If you are looking for a night of laughter, phenomenal singing and a taste of female empowerment, this is the musical for you.

Once again, Midland Center for the Arts does not disappoint.

Men’s basketball team falls short in loss to Schoolcraft JOE THORNTON

The Delta men’s basketball team played against the Schoolcraft College Ocelots on Jan. 17 in a highly emotional competition. Redemption was in the air for the Pioneers after two consecutive losses within their conference.

After tip-off, Schoolcraft grabbed momentum early by shooting on all cylinders and making multiple three-pointers.

The entire first half was fastpaced and played aggressively on both sides of the ball. At halftime the score was 43-46, with Delta trailing by three. It was evident that this was going to be a highly contested match-up early on.

As the game continued the mental and emotional toll was seen within the Pioneers. With tensions rising among the Pioneer’s players, they failed to rally in the end and lost with a score of 81-84.

Head coach Carlos McMath credits the loss to a lack of composure throughout the team and hopes to solve the problem

moving forward.

“We didn’t keep our emotions in check. Coming into this game, we knew they’d want to get into our heads any way they could, but we didn’t remain level headed. Our team, coaches and players both, should have kept composure, but we didn’t,” explains McMath.

With this loss, the Pioneers are on a three game losing streak.

McMath doesn’t think the past two losses were weighing on the team, but instead thinks a lack of preparation is to blame for the losses. “It’s nothing on the mental side of the game, but a lack of follow through among our team. We’ll have four out of five guys on the same page and the one that isn’t is a detriment.

It happens with the coaches as well, and I know as head coach it’s my responsibility to resolve that issue,” says McMath.

McMath thinks another issue is that the team has lost sight of their motto, E.P.I.C., which stands for “every play is crucial.”

“It all starts with the small things and we need to do all of those better. We need to work on our free throws and remember that every play is crucial. We’re taking plays off and it is hurting our team severely,” exclaims McMath.

Despite the short losing streak, McMath’s confidence in his team is unwavered.

“Our goal as a team was never to be undefeated. We always wanted to be able to play our best basketball in January and as we got ready for the playoffs.

We are a championship team and all championship teams face adversity like this. We aren’t worried, and we’ll continue to play the game the best way we can, have fun and get back to winning,” states McMath.

After this game, the Pioneers hold an overall record of 10-3 and a conference record of 2-3.

The Pioneers look to bounce back in their next game against St. Clair County Community College.

Lady Pioneers win two in a row, bring overall record up to 4-8 ADAM PRZESLAK The Lady Pioneers entered their Jan. 6 contest against the Oakland Community College Raiders looking to end a five game losing streak. The Raiders’ defense could not keep up with a fast paced, stable Pioneer offense leaving Oakland playing catch up from the jump. Delta managed to score more points in the first quarter than Oakland did during the entire first half.

A strong 19-point performance in the first quarter wasn’t all that the Lady Pioneers strived for. In the second quarter, Pioneers put another 22 points on the board.

The halftime score saw Delta topping Oakland 41-19.

There was no stepping off the gas pedal for the Pioneers in the second half as they hammered into the Oakland defense once again, this time racking up 23 points in just the third quarter.

In a bounce back attempt, the Raiders managed to outscore the Delta squad in the fourth quarter but could not surpass the offensive show that the Pioneers had been putting on all game. The Lady Pioneers found their first win off the new year and put an end to their five game losing streak as they dominated Oakland 82-52.

Harmany Williams led Delta in total points with 25 and also contributed 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Makoya Denham led the team with three steals while also scoring 16 points and racking up 7 rebounds herself.

Up next for the Lady Pioneers was an away game at Mott Community College in Flint on Jan. 13. An even first quarter placed both Delta and Mott at 17 points a piece. Things were not as even in the second quarter thanks to a strong Delta defense that limited Mott to 7

points and even stronger Delta offense that 22 points on the board. The Lady Pioneers, in pursuit of their second win in a row, continued their momentum through halftime and offensively overpowered their opponents once again in the third.

Once again it was only the fourth quarter that Delta’s opponents managed to outscore the Lady Pioneers.

However, just like with Oakland, it was a little too late for a Mott comeback and Delta placed their second W on the board for 2018. In the 77-61 victory over Mott, it was Williams who lead the team in scoring with 28 points while Rylee Pankow grabbed 13 total rebounds. Marisa Morton also aided the team with 14 points, 4 assists and 4 steals.

Delta headed back home to the Pioneer Gym for a matchup against Schoolcraft on Jan. 17. A troublesome first quarter placed the Lady Pioneers down by five.

The Delta offense then proceeded to go off against their division rivals in the second quarter. After scoring double what their opponent had scored Delta was back on top at the half 37-31.

Schoolcraft would bounce right back, however, shutting down the Delta offense and racking up 20 points on their offensive end of the court. Despite the Lady Pioneers best efforts, a comeback was out of the question. Schoolcraft barely bested Delta in this one, 6660. Williams continued to lead the team in scoring with 16 points and also had 5 assists and 4 steals. A couple key roleplayers came off the bench for Delta including Alexis Sanch, who scored 14 points, and Shallon Grawey, who

scored 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

On Wed. Jan. 24 St. Clair County Community College comes to the Pioneer Gym to take on Delta at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Pioneers then head on the road for a Saturday game on Jan. 27 against Macomb Community College that’s slated to start at 1 p.m. For the team’s final game in January they are back at home and facing off against Alpena Community College on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.

Delta women’s basketball coach remains optimistic JOE THORNTON With the women’s basketball team struggling in the early part of the season with a record of 3-7, head coach Shonda Long remains optimistic going forward. This is Long’s first head coaching job, but she believes these growing pains will pass.

“We went on a slump in December, didn’t win a single game. Most teams would give up on the season, but I haven’t seen that from the girls. They are trusting the process and are working hard to put us in position for improvement. They fight until the end and never put their heads down. I believe in them to learn from this month and grow from it as a team,” states Long.

Long credits most of her coaching knowledge to former women’s basketball head coach Keyshia Brown at Alma College.

“Working with Keyshia for three years helped me grow both as a woman and a coach. I learned how to react with girls and help them develop inside both the gym and the classroom.

She taught me not to complain about anything and had the mentality of living every day like you can’t lose at all, and I try to instill that within our girls,” states Long.

In Long’s inaugural season as a head coach, she has been stressing the importance on the defensive side of the court and has made changes in practice to emphasize the defensive mindset.

“We want to be known as a team that will make the defensive plays in key moments.

We want to be aggressive and have teams worry about playing us. I want them to know when they’re playing against the Delta women’s basketball team they’re going to have an aggressive game that is fast-paced and tires them out,” states Long.

Despite getting off to a rough start, Long refuses to dwell on the things that can’t be changed.

Long and her team are looking forward to the future and trying to take control of the things in their hands.

“It all starts by getting to that .500 win ratio. All that matters right now is improving every day in practice and eliminating the mistakes. If we’re able to do that the wins will come along with it,” explains Long.

In her initial season Long has many goals on her plate, many of which remain feasible even under the current conditions.

“I just look forward to continuing my growth as a coach and a mentor. I want to help them with their issues on and off the court. If everyone on this team is able to move on and continue their educational or athletic goals, I would feel successful. I make sure my players know there is more to life than basketball and to keep in mind what’s going to come next,” says Long.

Expanding the college football playoffs ADAM PRZESLAK College football has crowned its newest champion: the Alabama Crimson Tide, a team very familiar with lifting trophies above their head. This season’s college football playoffs marked the Crimson Tide’s third straight appearance and their second championship.

Alabama’s presence was questioned from the beginning as they took the highly contested fourth playoff spot. The SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs were already in the playoff, and with the addition of the Crimson Tide, there were two teams from the same conference in the playoffs for the first time.

Alabama had missed its chance to play in the SEC championship game after losing to in-state rival Auburn.

On Jan. 1 the Crimson Tide took to the Sugar Bowl for its first round matchup against Clemson. Meanwhile, an undefeated University of Central Florida team faced off against Auburn, the very team that took down Alabama a few weeks prior. UCF, an undefeated, non-power five team, was still considered an underdog.

Since UCF is not a “power five” conference team they were overlooked for a oneloss Alabama and not placed in the playoff. The power five conferences are the biggest schools and are considered to be the “money makers” for the NCAA. Power five conferences include the ACC, SEC, Big Twelve, Pac-12 and Big Ten, but not the American Athletic Conference. The AAC is one of a couple conferences consisting

of primarily smaller schools that don’t get as much media attention as power five schools.

Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan are examples of local division one schools that are not in a power five conference.

Central Florida, despite their underdog status, topped Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. Their victory kicked off a fan-led campaign to name the UCF Knights the one, true 2018 national champs and not Alabama. Why shouldn’t UCF be allowed to participate in high caliber bowl games?

The four team playoff format is celebrating its fourth year of exist. Coaches, fans, players and the media all seem to like the new format, it’s a fresh breath of air after decades of questionable committee decisions and contested national champions.

However, there is an almost unanimous request for change in college football coming from the same crowds that are praising the new format. The four team playoff bracket is great, but the masses are calling for more teams.

A six game playoff would be possible by giving two teams a first round bye week while the lower seeds faceoff to see which teams will battle the top seed the following week. However, the more popular request is for the playoff system to extend to eight teams. I think an eight team playoff would be the ideal situation. Four spots could potentially be reserved for power five conferences while four spots could be reserved for the non power five conferences.

JESSICA SIEROCKI Trump’s Corner: Where we highlight the events of our president’s favorite pastime: tweeting.

Why is the president of our nation tweeting constantly? Who knows. But what he tweets can be very interesting to say the least.

Here are some highlight tweets that I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that have stood out to me:

*Insert mocking Trump voice here.* Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. Wow. Such a presidential thing to say.

And if I’m being honest, your past actions lead me to believe that being smart may not be the strongest asset you possess. I mean, you looked into the sun during the solar eclipse of 2017 after every scientist in America told the entire population not to.

And then we go to the followup tweet of your claiming to be a genius! Not just any genius, a stable genius! What a miraculous discovery. But you know what I’ve heard? Real geniuses don’t need to defend their smarts like Trump did, because they know their intellectual value and don’t need external validation for themselves. But please, Mr. Trump, continue to boast about your genius on winning the presidency because you just end up looking like a fool.

So, Chrysler is moving its RAM truck production from

with your association, and I can’t find anything. Just because something positive happens while you’re in office, doesn’t mean you should be taking credit for it.

Mexico to Michigan in 2020 according to Business Insider, which will bring in more jobs to our state, which is beyond fabulous. But you know what really gets me about Trump’s tweet about this change? “The voters in Michigan are very happy they voted for Trump/ Pence.”

First of all, no, we are not. Or at least I’m not and will never be happy that your name is going down in history as the 45th President of the United States.

Second of all, what did you have to do with Chrysler making this decision? I’ve searched for a direct involvement of this move to credit you with any work that would make Michiganders happy

You mean the rich corporations that will trodden upon the middle class and poor that’ll try to eliminated the middle class altogether first?

Yeah, that sounds more like it.

President Trump allegedly called Haiti a “shithole” of a country, which is what prompted this defensive tweet. Here’s what gets me: No one, not Trump and not even a member of the Republican party, will even take ownership for this awful statement. If that’s what Trump said, be a man and take ownership for your actions.

Apologize for your words and try to repair a relationship with the country and the people. Don’t sit behind your phone trying to defend yourself and blaming the “Dems” because you don’t want to own up to your faults.

Get your shit together and start running this country so that others around the world can start to take us seriously again.

Customer service needs ‘Time’s Up’ movement

James Franco, Steven Seagal and Aziz Ansari have been added to the long list of men accused of sexual misconduct.

The accusations against Franco came after the Golden Globes, where he displayed his “Time’s Up” pin in support of the anti-harassment movement.

With all of these allegations surfacing in Hollywood, we wonder what the treatment is like in more mundane settings, such as customer service. If people in power with cameras all around are unafraid to harass, assault and offend, are people with no spotlight better or worse?

According to a 2016 study done by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a government

agency that processes sexual harassment complaints, “anywhere from 25 to 85 percent of women report having experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.”

The study also states “Employers should care about stopping harassment because harassment is wrong – and, in many cases, illegal.”

Harassment is everywhere, and that’s the problem.

Our friends, neighbors and co-workers make jokes, or bosses complain that there’s “no right way to hit on someone anymore,” speculators say Aziz Ansari’s sexual harassment allegation sounds consensual – but silence is not consent. Just because the waitress at Red Lobster is politely silent while she gets harrassed, does not mean that she does not feel harrassed.

“The fears that stop most employees from reporting harassment are well-founded. One 2003 study found that 75 percent of employees who spoke out against workplace mistreatment faced some form of retaliation,” explains the US EEOC study.

If we are teaching our customer service employees to sit, smile and nod while they are being harassed-- we are teaching them to be better victims. The #TimesUp movement, backed by Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes, America Ferrera and other big Hollywood names, raises money for women who need legal representation in sexual misconduct cases. Many of whom have shared their own sexual harassment stories,

hoping that time is truly up.

According to timesupnow.com, “Nearly half of working women in the U.S. say they have experienced harassment in the workplace. Seventy-one percent of those women did not report it.”

As more allegations continue to arise, the Collegiate hopes that #TimesUp for more industries than just Hollywood. Let’s stick up for ourselves, or co-workers, or waitresses and our female construction workers. The “norm” of sexual harassment has to end, and it ends with you.

Ways to deal with the breakup AUBRIE SMITH Breakups suck. No matter how fulfilling or flawed the relationship, the sting of the sudden loneliness can bite harder than this Michigan frost. Here are a few tips to warm the chill:

Binary systems are passé to say the least, especially when referring to gender. Why is genitalia the basis of one’s identity? Isn’t identity more nuanced than the organs you were born with?

The world we live in is not just black and white.

Several shades exist within it that differ from one extreme to the other. Similarly, this is what gender is: a spectrum.

On one end lies femininity, on the other masculinity.

Some identify as one, both, or neither. How you feel is what you are, rather than what you were given being the prime indicator.

Even the concepts of femininity and masculinity are just that – concepts and nothing more. The only reason we have people ascribing to different aspects of this convoluted spectrum is because we determined a specific set of traits to be identified as either “for boys” or “for girls.” Toys are starting to realize that this sort of

identification matrix is largely outdated, shouldn’t we be doing the same thing?

Just because something has the color pink, doesn’t make it inherently femme-presenting. Enjoying to do things like physical outdoor work has no bearing on whether or not you are more or less masculine. All of these different ideas that people have of what it is to be “manly” or “effeminate” are all rooted in an archaic and harmful perception of using people’s personal identities to segregate us into different groups of people.

I dream of a day where every person can identify simply as who they are without having to worry about some skewed sense of “genders,” to be able to identify themselves simply as themselves.

1. Connect with old friends

It’s all too common to lose touch with friends while you get closer to your significant other. Whether you’ve lost touch completely or you’ve just drifted from your everyweekend get-together, reach out and get back involved.

Rekindling the friend flame not only takes your mind off the breakup, it also establishes great relationships that can outlast fleeting flings.

2. Pick up a new hobby

I’m guilty of Netflix-binging after every breakup.

Devoting my life to “Friends” for the third time has me more interested in Ross’s breakups than my own. Who has time to miss someone when you’re hanging on your favorite character's every word?

3. Don’t be afraid to ugly-cry

Sadness is an incredibly important step in the grieving process – don’t skip it! All too often, we try our hardest to look “over it.” We post happy pictures on our social media sites, and there’s this pressure to be the first one to move on. Remember that the key to fully getting over something is to fully process it, and sadness is a part of that.

4. Make a change

Cutting your hair, changing a specific clothing style, increasing healthy habits or take a step toward your career goals – these are tangible things that increase your mood. Take simple steps to make yourself a happier, healthier you, and your mood, confidence and selfesteem will increase as a result.

5. Don’t cyber-stalk

Though our society has taught us to look them up every day, making sure you catch every post – don’t. If they aren’t on your feed, they aren’t on your mind. Do not sabotage your progress by feeding your curiosity, especially if you’ve heard what it did to that one cat.

Who put pickled foreskin in my salad?

KELLEN MacGREGOR You order a salade niçoise from your favorite restaurant. The very thought of anchovies causes your entire mouth to salivate at once. Your dear friend Charlotte orders the same.

At last, the salad has arrived! Hark! What is this?

These cannot be the prized anchovies you once adored.

No, this simply will not do!

Slices of pinky-length somethings are scattered throughout the salad. You take a whiff. Garlic, truffle oil and a scent that reminds you of your ex-boyfriend…

Peculiar!

You take a bite nonetheless. Hmm, could this be calamari? Perhaps a mix-up in the kitchen… No, this fleshy substance comes not from the sea. But what could it be?

Charlotte takes no heed of this most unusual substitute. In fact, she appears to enjoy the chewy, wellsautéed slivers of meat.

“Dearest Charlotte, what could this be? What don’t I

see? This salad I once knew no longer seems true! Am I befooled? Unschooled? Oh, woe is me! How did I ever get a master’s degree…”

“Friend, companion, hear me out: There is no need to pout or to even freak out. What you see before me is a delicacy from the male anatomy; the bestowal of a mohel, cut perfectly round the tip and placed upon a tortilla chip, this thin, pinkish slip. Feast, my friend, ‘fore the high priest is deceased. Lest we offend he who lost his bitter end!”

“Charlotte, Charlotte, whose lips are scarlet. My ears are deceivèd, my soul feels aggrievèd. Is there credence in what you say? Should I have ordered the soufflé? I daresay, may we pray that whoever has circumcised at least sterilized our pieces of man. Let us eulogize these remains of manhood that were tossed into a pan.”
