Collegiate newspapers swiped from stands JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER Approximately 450 newspapers vanished from student-run Delta Collegiate newsstands on Delta’s main campus between Monday Aug. 28 and Wednesday Aug. 30.

Crystal McMorris, faculty advisor for the Delta Collegiate, reported the incident to Public Safety on Wednesday Aug. 30.

McMorris appeared angry that the papers had been allegedly stolen out of newsstands just two days after distribution.

“College students have a First Amendment right to free expression, just like all Americans do. Disposing of student-produced newspapers for any reason is cowardly and despicable. If it was done to make room for a for-profit product, that’s shameful. If it was done to silence student viewpoints, that’s beyond shameful,” says McMorris.

That same morning, issues of the Saginaw Valley Journal were seen around campus, in some instances, in the newly emptied Collegiate newsstands.

According to their website, the Saginaw Valley Journal was founded in 2009 as a for-profit publication for Saginaw Valley State University.

A.J. Hoffman, executive editor for the Saginaw Valley Journal, contacted the Collegiate and stated they had no correlation between handing out their papers and the missing Collegiates.

“I personally distributed our own papers on campus but did not put any in the newsstands and we didn’t take any [Collegiate] papers,” says Hoffman.

According to Delta’s student handbook, anyone who wishes to distribute or post information on campus are required to take the information for approval to the Center for Student and Civic Engagement. Students or student organizations are allowed to distribute hand-to-hand written material without prior approval in areas of public passage, providing it does not interfere with normal College activity.

New school year brings fewer Pioneers KELLEN MacGREGOR

s Delta College began its fall semester, you may not have noticed fewer students roaming the halls than years past. However, according to an annual enrollment survey, Delta’s admission rate has decreased.

In Delta’s Strategic Plan and Budget handbook for the 2017-18 school year, enrollment has declined by 4 percent, or 7,300 credit hours. This decline roughly approximates to a million dollar loss in tuition and fee revenue. Although this appears to be groundbreaking, it certainly is not unprecedented, nor is it only occurring at Delta College.

In spring of 2018, Delta College plans to launch its newly built campus in downtown Saginaw. This opening is believed to attract more students in the Tri-Cities while providing the community with a brand new learning center. Because of this, there is a chance Delta will see an increase in student enrollees.

In the meantime, Delta’s cost of tuition remains less than the average Michigan community college, and yet, the college and its students still manage to garner awards year after year.

Delta College Public Safety responded to a malicious destruction of property. A visitor to the College alleged that between 10:30 am and 1 p.m. his vehicle was damaged with a key while parked at Delta College.

Delta College Public Safety took a report of a counterfeit bill accepted at the College Bookstore.

August 29, 2017

Delta College Public Safety investigated a child neglect complaint. A caller stated that small children were left unattended in a vehicle in the parking lot. Investigation revealed four children ranging in age from 9 years to 7 months. A parent returned to the vehicle during the investigation. Child Protective Services was notified.

Delta College Public Safety responded to two traffic crashes during this time frame and eight medical or injury reports.

Adjunct professor retires after 42 years JESSICA SIEROCKI

SAGINAW, MI - Jimmie Westbrook, 66, retired at the end of the 2017 winter semester after 42 years of being an adjunct communications professor at Delta College.

Westbrook started his educational journey by attending Delta College after graduating from Saginaw High School in 1969. Westbrook states that his first communications professor influenced him to pursue an education in communications.

After earning his master’s degree from Western Michigan University in 1974, Westbrook started working as an adjunct for Delta in 1974 when he was 24 years old.

“If anyone ever told me, ‘Hey Jimmie, you’ll come back here to be a teacher one day,’ I would’ve told them, ‘You have to be crazy,’” jokes Westbrook.

Westbrook also taught at St. Joseph, First Ward Community Center, Buena Vista High School, Arthur Hill, and Potter Elementary School.

“For me, when I teach I was kept in the ‘loop,’ as they say, with younger people – and they’ve kept me youthful.

well as the Baby Boomers back in the day,” says Westbrook.

Delta was not only his workplace, but also where he was introduced to his future wife Beverly, a retired former Delta professor, through colleague Willie E. Thompson. Together they have two children, Andre Westbrook and Janaé Westbrook.

Westbrook, being a family man, cannot take sole credit for all of his accomplishments.

“I’ve been married for 38 years, and I couldn’t have reached any of my accomplishments without the support of my wife and children,” says Westbrook.

Westbrook has made an impact on his colleagues while working for Delta. Adna Howell, coordinator for the communications department, started working with Westbrook in 2012.

“He is a dedicated worker, and you can tell that he loved what he did. Jimmie is just the type of person everyone wants on their team,” says Howell.

His multiple students have made a large impact on Westbrook’s life.

“Helping my students reach their goals and their future aspirations is the greatest gift

from God. I think that He has placed me in this work area for a reason and I’ve come to accept and embrace that,” says Westbrook.

Throughout the years, Westbrook has met thousands of students and is baffled that he now teaches the children of his past students.

“There was a point in time that I was coming in contact with children of original students I had taught, and now I run into grandchildren of those students,” says Westbrook.

Westbrook is celebrating his retirement from Delta by starting a new chapter of teaching at a middle school as a behavior interventionist.

“Now I support the administration and teachers and work with students that may be having some behavioral problems. They come to me and I’ll talk with them to try to keep them in school versus having them suspended. I knew I had to keep being around students and help them achieve even after leaving Delta,” says Westbrook.

“I would always say to the students, ‘It’s not where you start, it’s where you end up,’” says Westbrook, “and I think I ended up right where I belong.”

Cooking with the Collegiate: Cake Batter Cookies JESSICA SIEROCKI This recipe was given to me by a family friend a few years ago, and it is my ultimate favorite cookie recipe to this day. It’s great because you can make it entirely on your own. Don’t be afraid to play around with unique flavor combinations!

Here’s what you’ll need: • • • •

1 box of cake mix (whatever flavor you choose; get creative!)

1 stick of butter 1 egg 2 tbsp. of water

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Pour cake mix into a bowl and stir out the clumps. While doing this, melt the stick of butter on the stove or in the microwave.

Stir butter to avoid burning.

Pour half of the melted butter into the cake mix and stir. Add

egg and two tablespoons of water into the cake mixture. Stir. Add in the last half of the melted butter. Stir until all combined.

Form tablespoon-size balls of dough on a non-stick baking tray (I use Silpats to line my trays for easy removal). Use two of your fingers to gently press down ball of dough until you reach your desired thickness. The flatter the dough, the crisper the cookie.

OR Spread minimal amount of flour onto a clean surface. Take dough and roll it out to a thickness of one-fourth of an inch. Use any desired cookie cutter to cut out cookie shape. Brush excess flour off the cookie and place on baking tray.

Put the cookies into the oven.

Bake for 9 to 11 minutes.

The first step to sticking to a budget is making one. Figure out what you can afford to spend on food per week, subtract $10 (because you really can’t spend that much on food!), and start planning. Knowing you’re going to spend Friday night at Genji Steakhouse will change your entire weekly budget, so try to think ahead! Don’t be afraid to say no if you can’t afford something. Tell your friends you’re broke.

Behind the Radio Curtains: An Interview with Q 90.1’s Jeff Scott O’Deay MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI kind of evolving into a fulltime job.

Q: What got you interested in radio?

A: Well, you know, deep down, I have had broadcasting in my heart since I was a young boy.

When we were around the age of 10 years old, we used to make mock radio stations on old cassette tapes. And we would have a music program and a fake news show, maybe a soap opera, and we used to do that stuff. So when I got older, I decided to pursue broadcasting as a career.

Q: What was your first radio job, and what did it take to get in?

A: Honestly, this was my first radio job here at Delta College Public Radio. I went to school here and pursued my degree in Electronic Media Broadcasting. I was what they called a “nontraditional” student – in a sense that I was a little bit older than the average age of students at the time – and I became an employee here, as a student, and that ended up

Q: How easy was it to get your foot into the door at first?

A: Well, like I said, I started as a student, and we did some writing and some auditioning as a class, if I recall. And there were a couple people in this class who were going to get handpicked by the radio management to come on as student employees. So maybe I was a little bit lucky to be in the right place at the right time to get in here, and then after I was employed here, there was, of course, a series of events that led to full time employment.

Getting my foot in the door was actually rather easy for me, and I consider myself kind of lucky. I may have caught a break, you know.

Q: Would you say, overall, that you had a good experience here?

A: Absolutely! Delta College is a wonderful place to work.

I have had a very positive experience working here.

First of all, I’ve got a great, big, huge passion for doing radio and for doing audio production, so it’s great, and I am surrounded by wonderful, creative people that also work here, which has provided for a very nice experience.

Q: Are there any main frustrations about it?

A: Sure, one of the biggest frustrations for me doing radio – and especially when you’re doing live radio – is technical or equipment malfunctions or issues. That

can be very frustrating – and very challenging – when the equipment isn’t working like it should, and you’re having trouble getting things out there. And, of course, when you’re doing live radio and you make a mistake, you know, you just don’t want to do that.

that’s been going on, I’ve found it difficult to put it out, like, weekly or monthly.

So now we’re putting them out occasionally, when I get some time to do something with a local artist. And I’m trying to make the projects with Studio Q a little bit more different than just

Q: Can you tell me more about one of your current shows, Studio Q? Have you hosted any other regular shows, aside from the morning show?

A: Studio Q is an occasional podcast. I used to do a weekly FM music show that focused on artists from our community; local musicians, basically. But the show pretty much became too much of an endeavor with everything else I have going on, so we had to say goodbye to the show, and I started the podcast because I still wanted to work with the local music community.

bringing people into the studio and then chatting with them. I’ve actually been going out on location to different places, and the next one I’m hoping to put out next week will be a conversation with Bay City musician and sound engineer Andy Reed.

I used to host a show that didn’t really feature local artists. It was called “The Friday Jam.” I used to bill it as an exploration of six decades of rock and roll. It was literally all over the map; we might play something from the ‘50s, something from the 21st century. It was a lot of fun, and I hope I

have the opportunity to do a program like that again.

Q: Do you think radio will remain a viable industry in the future?

A: We’ll see. You know, they’ve been saying for years that radio’s going to go away. Of course, they’ve said that about newspapers when radio first came about, although newspapers have been disappearing somewhat now; that was a long time ago when they first talked about that. So I think there’s always going to be a need for some sort of radio; I think there will always be a need for audio production. One of the benefits of radio in this busy day and age that we work in, is that radio lets you multitask, where with most other devices and most other mediums, you have to watch or whatever so you’re fixated on that. With radio, you can have it playing while you do other things.

Q: Overall, what advice would you give to someone who wants to get into the radio industry?

A: Well, hard work goes a long way. Tenacity is the word I would use most, and what tenacity means is the willingness and the ability to go above and beyond. For a young person who wants to break into the industry, that’s what it takes. That’s what people notice; you can have some talent or whatever, but your willingness to work hard, get it done, and to show a good work ethic is incredibly important.

‘Larceny and Old Lace’ coming to Delta’s stage

JESSICA SIEROCKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – Grab your scripts and warm up your performance voice for this year’s rendition of “Larceny and Old Lace” by Van Vandagriff. The play is a family-friendly spoof on the widely known “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

Beth Heyart, communications professor, is co-directing the play alongside communications professor Judy Gonzalez.

“The spoof ’s plot is about two aunts who hide away stolen money in their basement, and everything unravels from there.

We try to put on more comedic shows, so this is a great pick that will appear to the younger and older audience members that attend in October,” says Heyart.

Heyart and Gonzalez chose this as the featured fall play for a variety of reasons.

“I was really drawn to this because ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ was one of my favorite plays when I was in high school. It’s a neat show because it’s fast-paced and relies on practiced comedic timing from the lead characters.

We also traditionally have a lot of K-12 students who come see the shows, and this version is more appropriate for all ages compared to the original play,” says Heyart.

This year’s fall play will have different elements on stage from previous plays Delta has put on before.

Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the United States. Delta College is hosting events to educate and expose students to this rich heritage throughout the month.

“The set will be different in terms of construction. We’re going to have a second story that we’re going to have to build.

We normally don’t use a lot of staircases and we’ll have a lot more entrances and exits on stage than what we normally have,” says Heyart.

If you wish to be cast, practice rehearsals will be held Thursday and Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday set-building will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. followed by rehearsal from 4 to 7 p.m. Other positions for backstage help are also welcome to contact Heyart.

“We’re always looking for people to help out with tech – which includes stage crew, people to help work lights and sound, and even makeup artists,” says Heyart.

The performances will take place in Delta’s Lecture Theatre, G-160. Performances will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. and Friday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Delta professor makes visual poetry that honors where we live JACK RECHSTEINER SAGINAW, MI - Andrew Rieder, artist and Delta College professor, gave a lecture on his mural entitled “Where We Live” at the Saginaw Art Museum on Sep. 7 starting at 6 p.m. The lecture is the first in an ongoing eight part series that will feature a new speaker every month at the museum and gave attendees an opportunity to learn about the mural and how it represents the history of Saginaw.

The mural “Where We Live” was created by Rieder, along with help from Tom Osborne and Michelle McLean who worked on the project as two Delta College independent study students. Rieder calls them “his partners and crime,” and insisted they be listed as collaborating artists on the mural. The team of three joke about the sheer size of the project, saying that they went through at least 150 X-acto knife blades while working on the stencils for the mural.

Rieder has been teaching art classes at Delta College for the past eight years and is also a member of the Saginaw Art Museum board. When the topic of a permanent mural installation was brought up, Rieder volunteered to create one for the museum.

“I feel that part of being a community professor is to be active and engaged in that community. That’s why I am glad

to be a part of the invaluable institution that is the Saginaw Art Museum,” says Rieder.

The mural is a visual narrative loop of Saginaw, meant to work in continuity with no start or end point. When divising the art piece, the decision was made to work with neutral earth-tones for the background so as not to compete with any art that may be exhibited on the room’s walls and spray paint was the medium chosen for the historic figures so that the oversaturated colors would have visual rhyme with the other permanent installation, “Calypso Reef ” a hanging glass chandelier.

The “Where We Live” mural is a tribute to the eclectic history of the area and depicts some nameable people of note while others are embodiments of artistic movements that have flourished in Saginaw. Among those shown in the mural are Theodore Roethke, Sonny Stitt, Stevie Wonder, Lefty Frizzel, Sharrie Williams, E. Irving Couse, The Goodridge Brothers, Robert Nickle and Eric Schantz, while the anonymous symbols of cultural manifestations include an older gentleman wearing overalls, who personifies Saginaw’s prominent lumbering history; a group of Ojibwa ceremonial dancers, who represent the region’s indigenous heritage; and an

anonymous photographer, whose concealed face symbolizes every under-recognized or struggling artist working to capture the beauty of Saginaw. A Singer sewing machine also makes an appearance, which Rieder says he

usually gets questions about why he decided to include it.

“Singer sewing machine’s are these bulky, industrial machines that produce beautiful and sometimes fragile work that I feel is representative of the DIY nature of Saginaw. It embodies the spirit of makers and creators we have here,” says Rieder.

Throughout the piece various cultural venues make an

literally and symbolically links the different figures, locations, and events together while also representing how poetry, music, art and dance can act as a connection between people in a community.

The mural has been very successfully received by the community. On the opening night of unveiling the piece, museum staff said they saw so

many people taking pride in seeing the history of Saginaw turn into a permanent art display.

“I think that it’s a wonderful addition to the Saginaw Art Museum and is extremely representative of Saginaw,” says Delta College art student Danielle Daniels, 25.

Event coordinators ended up bringing out extra seating to accommodate the crowd of 50 people who came out to the museum for the lecture. The diversity of the crowd ranged from college students to older museum members and everyone in between.

“The turnout was very surprising for the first lecture because they are a new thing we’re doing. Normally we have 20 people coming out to the After Hours events, so to see 50 people in here is a very good sign for the events to come,” says Jen Gray, Saginaw Art Museum coordinator.

The lectures are an After Hours event sponsored by WNEM and they are free and open to the public with light refreshments being provided.

Get ready, get set, get to the Secret Saginaw Adventure Race JACK RECHSTEINER Taking place in Saginaw on Saturday, Sept. 30th from 9 a.m. to noon, the Secret Saginaw Adventure Race is a collaborative fundraiser between the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy and Counter Culture Arts Collective and will benefit the missions, activities, and operations of both organizations.

After Counter Culture and the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy partnered with each other to work on the Patchwork Art & Music Festival, they developed a friendship and an admiration for each other’s organizations. This desire to continue to work together combined with dreams of how to get people out and active in the Saginaw-area, and is what caused the Secret Saginaw Adventure Race to come to life.

“One of the largest common denominators between each of our organizations is that we are doers. When we talk about something, we try to make it

actionable within the same conversation… We both want to make the Great Lakes Bay Region a more fun place to live, work and play,” says Benjamin Champagne, executive director of Counter Culture.

The Secret Saginaw Adventure Race is a team-based scavenger hunt designed to test participants’ knowledge of Saginaw while also helping them discover hidden gems throughout the city. Teams are made of four participants whose goal is to make their way to 15 different sites across the City of Saginaw by solving Saginaw trivia-centered clues. The team to visit all 15 sites in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner. Teams may choose to participate via bike or car, however bike teams only need to visit 11 of the 15 totals sites as a handicap.

The Saginaw Bay Land Conservancy and Counter Culture are also partnering with

a few organizations to see that the Secret Saginaw Adventure Race is the best event that it can be. Dow is the title sponsor, but Saginaw County Parks and Recreation are involved, as well as Covenant Healthcare and many others. The goal of the event other than getting people actively engaged in having with Saginaw is to bring in funding for both organizations to help with other projects they are overseeing that need attention.

“I love picturing people running all over the city, solving clues and acting wild. Having fun exploring their backyard, childlike,” Champagne says about his hopes for the events.

JACK RECHSTEINER For anyone unfamiliar with the artistry of a literary magazine, it’s a periodical publication devoted to the fields of literature and also art.

These artistic journals tend to exist outside of larger, commercial magazines and because of that are able to publish the works of yet-to-be-discovered writers and artists. The Pioneer Post is a literary magazine that was created specifically for Delta College students to create and share their works, whether it be poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or art projects, with the community and world at large. The Pioneer Post encourages students to participate in academic competitions, public readings, and of course, submitting personal entries into the Pioneer Post.

Some journals exist with a specific purpose in mind; I’ve flipped through the pages of some that tackle environmental issues through poetry, I’ve nodded my head along to artists opposing the mainstream and screaming to be heard by any wanting fingers waiting to wrestle with the pages of their wishes, and among the best are those that put an emphasis on bringing exposure to up-andcoming writers who are calling to a captive audience. This last one is the kind that we have at our fingertips, right here at Delta.

The Pioneer Post is an invaluable asset that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Throughout history, these magazines have played a significant roles in shaping un-

conventional and avant-garde movements like modernism and postmodernism as well as being a place for authors throughout history to get their start. Among these are T.S. Eliot, whose first poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” was published in “Poetry” magazine, James Joyce, who published experimental drafts of “Ulysses” in “The Little Review,” as well as Hemingway and Faulkner and many other authors were first published in these literary magazines.

Literary magazines showcase the process of art and the growth of the artists making it. It places art and writing, both historically and contemporarily, into a context which gives readers perspective on the fluid process of creation and publication.

These magazines give writers and artists a new sense of being able to access significant publications and helps them to understand the process of being published for those just starting out.

With their ability to contrast the mainstream, literary magazines also serve as a gallery of the thoughts and ideals of the times by giving artists and writers with new ideas a place to find an audience. These journals are simply the best way to stay current with what is happening in art and literature. Literary journals are an incredible place to find inspiration, but they’re

also a way to be connected with a larger body of writers and artists trying to break into the scene.

That’s why the Pioneer Post is an excellent resource to tap into as a Delta student looking to get their work into the world.

On my 21st birthday, I got extremely drunk. Not the cute kind of happy drunk where you laugh and dance and have a good time – I’m talking about crying my eyes out for no reason, waking up shirtless, not remembering anything past midnight, and apparently blabbing about my ex-boyfriend to my current one.

Kevin and I had only been seeing each other for about a month. He was open to the fact that he had jumped into his last relationship before being able to weigh what he wanted, and that he wanted to take things slowly this time around. After some time, I began wondering if he was seeing someone else, if he had commitment issues, or if I was just something to pass the time while he searched for something better.

I was torn between wanting to talk to him about it, but also wondering why I felt so compelled to rush things in the first place. Would bringing up this issue so early ruin things before they began? Did I want to risk it to find out?

On my birthday, I invited him to my nightly plans that included my family. This meant a heavier conversation: What do I introduce you as? With all the confidence I could muster, I asked him over Chinese. His answer: “I guess you should probably say I’m a friend.” This put things into perspective: He wasn’t that serious about me.

On the day of my birthday, he complained about a headache and eventually told me he was going to spend my birthday at home, alone, while he tried to work through his under-theweather symptoms, and again, I was crushed. I ultimately decided that I wanted something more serious, and that we probably wouldn’t work out. So, before I had to have the big break-up talk on my birthday, I turned to

alcohol.

About 12 mixed drinks and ten shots later, I stopped remembering things clearly.

To be more accurate, I stopped remembering anything at all.

But the short version is that I ugly-cried to Kevin for several hours about how I wanted to be his girlfriend, and somehow that boy was still at my apartment the next morning.

Advice: Don’t get drunk and ugly-cry to your potential boo.

Sure, it got the job done, and I now know where he and I stand, but looking back, I would have rather him be sure himself instead of drunkenly pushing him for an answer. If you're upset about your status with your partner, or lack thereof, communication is always key.

If you ask, and they don’t want to hear it, then maybe you don’t want the same things and it’s time to stop wishing for the move that will never come.

Be calm, be confident and be unafraid to Define The Relationship whenever you see fit.

Seasonal depression taking its toll on local Buddhist KELLEN MacGREGOR Your bonsai tree’s leaves have begun to brown, nighttime has become too frigid to burn incense on your patio and your prized kombucha jar froze over night – no matter how many healing crystals you rub on yourself, nothing has thus prepared you for autumn’s hardships.

The changing of seasons is not easy for everybody, particularly for Melissa Applebee, a selfproclaimed “wanderlust soul” whose mood and overall mental health have deteriorated since summer has transitioned into fall.

“Ever since I went on my pilgrimage to San Fran, I haven’t been the same,” confessed Applebee while sipping on kombucha from a Mason jar. “I miss the vibes and the weather.”

Since returning to the Tri-Cities, Applebee has stopped going out with friends and has

instead chosen to lie in bed all day, reading SparkNotes versions of Friedrich Nietzsche’s works.

“No one will ever love me,” lamented Applebee, gripping onto her Buddha figurine from Sleeping Tiger Imports.

“Nothing has ever depressed me as much as Mother Nature’s cruel, benumbed embrace.”

Speaking on behalf of her friend, Georgina Johnston believes Applebee is simply going through an annual phase. “She did the same thing last year,” said Johnston. “I’d ask her to hang out, but she’d tell me that she had to ‘sort out her chakras’ or ‘tend to her dreamcatchers.’”

On Monday, Aug. 28, President Trump signed into action a reversal on an Obamaera ban concerning military equipment handed down to police departments. President Obama, in the wake of the Michael Brown shooting and Ferguson riots, decided to ban militarization of police departments through the aid of the government.

The ban affected things such as grenade launchers, armored vehicles, such as tanks, highcaliber weapons and bayonets among other things. Obama’s ban also impacted how police departments acquired vehicles, tools and weapons, such as helicopters and pyrotechnics.

It required police departments to go through proper training before acquiring any equipment, get permission from local

Trump militarizes the police governments to obtain these supplies, and come up with a persuasive reason for needing said equipment.

As a staff, the Collegiate feels that this, along with everything else going on right now, is outrageous.

Police are not the military, so isn’t it only natural that they shouldn’t receive military grade weaponry? Sure, a case can be made for higher-caliber weapons because we believe the police should have the proper tools to protect and serve our communities, but grenade launchers are where we really start to turn our heads.

While there is a need for the use of tear gas by police departments, which can be shot out of grenade launchers, there isn’t much need for them to be carrying live grenades.

Some members of the Collegiate question whether police officers are qualified to handle the weapons they handle currently. In a time where many Americans believe police brutality to be an issue, will the militarization of our police departments help the situation?

It’s ridiculous to think that a local police department would ever need to use an armored tank similar to ones used by soldiers overseas. By putting the keys of a tank in an average police officer’s hands, you are trusting them with a powerful object that only those who have gone through serious vetting can pilot in the military. The police are there to “protect and serve,” but how safe will you feel when you see military tanks in your hometown?

Maybe Trump thinks that Arpaio can help boost the need for the Mexican wall he so desperately wants to come to fruition or just wanted to have attention drawn back to him as

The Collegiate Tries It: Jack gives up caffeine for a week and has something to say about it JACK RECHSTEINER I am an addict. The first thought that crosses my mind when I wake up is about getting my fix for the day. It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.

Without it I am tired, irritable, achy, depressed.

It sounds like I’m talking about some hard drug, but no.

I’m talking about one of the most widely consumed substances in the world – caffeine.

I don’t know who I wronged, or if there is some god out there in the universe taking revenge upon me for something I did or said, but somehow I got convinced to give up caffeine for a week “for the good of the Delta Collegiate.”

Now, to add some background to this story for those of you who don’t know me personally, an average day for me usually involves starting the day with a cup of coffee, grabbing an energy drink on my way to class, snagging an espresso before work and then relaxing at home with another caffeinated something that I picked up on my way home. The worst part is this is about the amount of caffeine it takes to keep me at my baseline energy level. This is actually less caffeine than what I used to drink while I was working at a coffee shop. I suppose when the temptation is right there, it’s easy to indulge.

So back to what I was saying.

I must have wronged some sort of someone, whether it’s karma or some vengeful cosmic deity, I went through the agony of dying in the name of science and better

headaches, although it does help relieve some of the irritability and anxiety I had been feeling.

DAY TWO Jack is physically here today, but only barely. He has mentally checked out until further notice.

My eyes feel dry and heavy, like I haven't slept in a week. The lyrics to Brain Stew by Green Day pop into my head: "My eyes feel like they’re gonna bleed, dried up and bulging out my skull." Concentrating is difficult, takes up much of the little energy

I have. Words, even sentences are difficult and disjointed.

I have a headache that just won’t stop, and painkillers are doing nothing to touch them.

My brain feels like it's having hunger pangs. Researching caffeine withdrawal symptoms, it seems that the body becomes over-sensitive to adenosine, which causes blood pressure to drop dramatically. This causes an excess of blood in the head and because of that there is a dramatic pounding in my skull. I try to nap before class, but it doesn’t help relieve the

Things haven’t completely righted themselves, but this definitely feels a lot more like something I can do than it did the first two days.

DAY FOUR & FIVE I decided to put these days together because there isn’t anything really different between them. The withdrawals have gone away, but the cravings are still there. Things feel muted, almost like the color saturation has been turned down on life. I’m finding I’m less conversational, I’m more absorbed into my thoughts than contributing things to say when talking to people. The introversion isn’t a bad thing, but it definitely feels

different than when I’m keeping myself in a constantly upped state of drinking coffee. The best way I can phrase it is that I feel more in touch with myself, but slightly more out of touch with the things going on around me.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too, right?

DAY SIX As I sit finishing this article, I once again have caffeine in my hands. A cup of coffee to give me the focus and energy I need to focus on this task at hand. I caved. The temptation of a little pick-me-up was simply too great.

It was an interesting experiment to see how my personality can become the inverse of itself within a couple days from lack of caffeinated stimulation, but the need to return to the Jack that I’m used to couldn’t be helped.

I believe that the black brew will always be there, calling my name, beckoning me to partake of the reanimating water that has become the cornerstone of my life.Caffeine is something I’ll hold hands with up until the day that they are throwing dirt over the box in which I permanently reside. It’s not a choice at this point, it’s a need. A need that I’ve come to terms with. To all my friends, the words “caffeine” and “Jack” are synonymous. I could quit if I wanted, but the quality of my life is improved enough that I would rather live a shorter life with coffee than a longer life without it.

DELTA PIONEERS VS. MUSKEGON JAY HAWKS

Undefeated start for Lady Pioneers pushes them to top 10 ADAM PRZESLAK

With the one point victory over Jackson College on Sept 1, the Lady Pioneers are now an impressive 4-0.

The Lady Pioneers have also earned themselves a spot in the top ten of the NSCAA Division III poll.

Preseason rankings from the NSCAA had the Lady Pioneers listed seventeenth but with the recent domination shown by Delta’s squad they were sure to rise in the rankings.

Sure enough, the first regular season poll, released Sept. 5, moved Delta up seven spots to tenth nationwide.

After beginning their season with a commanding 6-0 victory over Northwood in their traditional preseason scrimmage the Lady Pioneers have continuously thrived on the field. In the exhibition opener freshman goalkeeper Kalyn Breckenridge had a great performance in net and she let nothing past her.

Skylar Eckert contributed two of Delta’s six goals while Casey Allessie, Taylor Farrand, Paige Renshaw and Kaitlyn Viaene all combined for one goal each.

Following the Northwood game

the team traveled to Lake Michigan College where Breckenridge continued her success in net as she chalked up three saves and, again, let none of the opposing team’s shots see the net. Scoring for the Lady Pioneers was Eckert and Renshaw as the Lady Pioneers kept an aggressive Lake Michigan at bay to win it 2-0.

Delta stayed on the road to face off against Ancilla College in Indiana next. The Lady Pioneers’ goalkeeping continued to put on a show in the net. Breckenridge continued her shutout streak and was credited with another three saves. Hannah Bauer had two saves in net for Delta as well.

Renshaw and Eckert met the net once again in the first half giving Delta a 2-0 lead and Farrand cemented a victory with a third goal for the Lady Pioneers in the second half.

In their home opener, the Lady Pioneers squad crushed Muskegon 6-2. The two goals scored by Muskegon are the only goals scored on Delta this season. Two rapid fire goals by Farrand twenty minutes into the game and later goals by Allessie

and Renshaw put the team up 4-1 at the half-time. Hope Emington and Audrey Niederstadt put another two goals on the board to combat Muskegon’s second goal in the second half.

Delta earned their fourth win in a row in Jackson as they took the field against the Jackson College Jets. Madison Jewell scored the only goal of the game sealing the victory for Delta 1-0. The Lady Pioneer’s keepers had another fantastic game in net with Breckenridge getting six saves. Although the game was close at times Delta was able to pull away with the win thanks to the team’s dominant performance.

The Lady Pioneers are slated for a streak of home games where they hope to continue their winning streak. On Wednesday Sept. 13, U of M Dearborn comes to Delta with a 4:00 p.m. start time. Next is a few rematches at home, one of which is with Jackson College set for Friday Sept. 22 at 2:00 p.m. and the other against Lake Michigan on Wednesday Number 23 Jessie Mclinnis playing defense against number 11 on the opposing team. Aug. 30. Delta College, Saginaw MI. Oct. 4 at 4:00 p.m.

Fantasy Football Watch: Getting over ‘fandom blindness’ ADAM PREZESLAK

Don’t be that person in the fantasy football league who puts absolutely all of your faith behind one NFL team’s roster. Listen, we get it, if you’re the biggest Green Bay Packers fan this side of Lake Michigan, that’s a good excuse to draft Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, or maybe even Jordy Nelson. However, here’s some advice from my past experiences: Do not draft more than two – or three in some forgivable circumstances – players from the same team to your fantasy team.

Taking Rodgers and Nelson in your league’s draft could be

very beneficial to you. Taking Rodgers, Nelson, and newly acquired tight end Martellus Bennett is quite a risky move.

Sure, the Packers are “your team,” and you have faith that with Rodgers slinging the ball Bennet is going to put up his best stats yet. But, you’re being affected by what I call “fandom blindness”.

A few years ago, I too, was blinded by fandom when I drafted plenty of players from my beloved Detroit Lions.

During the 2014 season, I took Matthew Stafford as my backup quarterback, the Lions’ defense led by Ndamukong Suh, running

back Reggie Bush and emerging rookie TE Eric Ebron. I had firmly placed my trust in the system established by then-firstyear head coach of the Lions Jim Caldwell, and let it be known on my fantasy roster.

The mistake in doing this is that you’re placing all your eggs in one basket willingly.

If the Lions had a not-so-hot game on Sunday, I was left with a lackluster amount of fantasy points at the end of the day. Even if, say, Ebron had a breakout game scoring a couple touchdowns and running up some yardage, that took ball time away from Bush.

So, it’s great that my tight end scored a bunch, but not that great that one of my RBs scored five or fewer points. A similar situation would result if Bush’d had a great game because it’d take away pass yards from Stafford or receiving yards from Ebron. By drafting other teams’ players you can maximize your points effort for the week.

Oh, and by all means, good luck when your team’s bye week comes around, as two, three or even four of your slots are now blank for the week’s matchup.

Not only does your favorite team not play for the week, but you also are left searching for some

random third or fourth string guy to pick up. Don’t even risk dropping a high-level fantasy player to pick up a player that will actually put a score up this week because you’ll regret it in the long run if that player gets picked up while you’re scrambling during bye week.

Plan before or during a draft on taking players with different bye weeks so there isn’t one week of the season where you’re setting yourself up for utter failure.

Spotlight on Alumni: Sarah Dufresne ADAM PREZESLAK Working behind the scenes, in a small cubicle in B wing, sits Delta alum Sarah Dufresne.

Currently, she’s a controller in the finance department, but 27 years ago, you’d find her on the court donning the number 33 jersey playing for the Lady Pioneers.

After graduating from Bay City Central in 1989, Dufresne played as a forward on the women’s basketball team during the 198990 and 1990-91 seasons. During the 1990-91 season she was awarded the Daniel Kinsey Memorial Award, an award given to athletes for their on-court and off-court achievements. She was also an academic all-American and made the Dean’s list.

She remembers Delta fondly the many weekend tournaments spent with teammates. “[The tournaments] were so much fun. We’d leave Friday and not come home until Sunday,” Dufresne said with a grin. “One tournament we’d won, the Kalamazoo Christmas one, was especially memorable because

we came home in a snow storm.”

The trophies from the Kalamazoo tournaments now sit in display cases in the hallways of the college, as well as a plaque featuring Dufresne’s name-- the Kinsey Memorial Award.

Following her Delta graduation, she went on to Aquinas College in Grand Rapids where she received a

with the affordable and local education provided by Delta.

“I always wanted to come back to Delta and be a part of it somehow. I was always an advocate of Delta,” Dufresne said.

Sarah and her husband Brain now live together in Essexville and have two children ages twelve and sixteen. She is very much looking forward to the upcoming women’s basketball season and plans to attend as many games as possible.

With every memory brought up about her days as a Lady Pioneer, her face lit up with a smile and another anecdote arose. Given the opportunity, she’d do it all again.

“Basketball had a huge impact on my life and education.

It kept me organized and focused. It helped me develop social skills and teamwork,” Dufresne recalled. “I have lasting friendships with people that were on the team.”
