MmEeEeTt TtHhEe EeDdIiTtOoRr IiNn CcHhIiEeFf I’ve always had a love for writing but my interest in journalism didn’t start until high school. Seeing my named published in print was exhilarating. However, I decided KkAaIiTtLlYyNn SsKkRrZzYyPpCcZzAaKk not to enter into a career in journalism, because there was a lot of uncertainty about the newspaper industry as it tried to transition into the digital realm of media. I began my freshman year at Columbia College Chicago and worked toward a Marketing & Communications degree. Originally I wanted to do PR for a non-profit, but became disenchanted. Taking advertising, marketing, and media literacy classes gave me a better understanding of how companies tap into the consumer’s desires and fears to market to them. I grew to realize that I didn’t want to sell people things or cover up PR disasters, and fell back on what I’d been practicing all throughout high school: journalism. I love journalism because it gives me the opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, learn about events all around the globe instantaneously and share information with others. The decision to attend Delta has rekindled my passion for writing: I look forward to sharing that excitement with my fellow Delta Collegiate staff and creating a meaningful paper for you the reader! Send me story ideas or ask me questions at kaitlynskrzypzak@delta.edu.staff in the coming year.

CcHhAaNnGgEeSs TtHhIiSs FfAaLlLl The Delta Collegiate is getting a makeover this fall to celebrate our 75 volume. We’re moving from a tabloid layout to broadsheet. Broadsheet is the most common format, and newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post use broadsheet layouts. You’ll also notice that we have a new logo.

In creating this logo we decided to go for a modern and minimalist design that is pleasing to the eye but doesn’t distract from our content. The Delta Collegiate website, www.deltacollegiate.com, has also received a revamp for this semester as we’ve switched the site that we use to host.

This year, the Collegiate takes its voyage into the high speeds of the digital seas. The Delta Collegiate Stream is an online newscast and commentary show produced by the Collegiate staff which discusses topics locally, nationally, and internationally. New media journalism, which combines video, audio, photography and social media, along with the traditions of print journalism is dynamically transforming news. The ever-evolving formats of new media PDNH LW GLIÀFXOW WR GHÀQH Public and cable broadcasting has become increasingly homogenous. Conglomerations and corporations, such as Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation and the Disney Media Networks, have bought up multiple media organizations, limiting the mass media’s perspective, and have created a narrative based on personal RSLQLRQV DQG SURÀWV

Because of this model, marginalized and minority groups are left without a voice. However, new media organizations, like the Delta Collegiate Stream, are without corporate narratives. We are without the traditional boundaries of circulation area and/or geography. We are now a platform for all students and groups to have a voice. We are now a globalized and real-time source of reporting. A new generation and culture was created with this technological shift, and that culture is suggesting that it’s the message that matters, not the medium. Make sure to watch for the launch of the DCS that will happen this fall at www.DeltaCollegiate.com and www.YouTube.com/TheDCStream.
