Robotics state tournament comes to SVSU CARTER HOUTMAN UNIVERSITY CENTER – Robotics has become a huge deal for high schoolers in recent years, and after the state tournament on April 13, it’s easy to see why. Teams from high schools from around Michigan came to SVSU to participate in the annual For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics competition at the Ryder Center.

Hundreds of students came with their teams to participate in the heated competition. One red team and one blue team, each with three robots, competed in this year’s version of the game.

This year, there were three different tasks that each school could build their robot to do. The first was to pick up yellow cubes and raise them to the tallest of three seesaws to gain points.

Being the tallest robot of the three on the team, this robot was also typically the one that would hook on to a bar and climb off the ground at the end of the round for extra points.

The second kind was a midsized robot that was quick and could easily pick up the same cubes and place them on the two shorter seesaws on the field to tip the scales to their favor and gain points.

The third kind of robot was the smallest and fastest of the three. This robot couldn’t do any tasks except play defense and push the yellow cubes through a hole in the wall of the field to a person who stacked the cubes in a column outside the field to gain

more points. The more cubes in the column, the more points for the team.

At the beginning of the round, there is a 15-second period where the robots have to move autonomously, meaning that the team cannot control the robot and the robot is doing a specific task on its own. After that, the drive team for the robot can step in and begin controlling the robot for the rest of the round.

At the end of the round, all three robots need to go to their team’s colored platform in the center of the field. For maximum points, the tallest robot can climb on to the seesaw in the center of the field.

FIRST Robotics is a new and exciting way for high-school students to learn and get involved in trades like manufacturing, electrical work and coding.

According to the FIRST Robotics website, 87 percent of participating students plan to take a more challenging math or science course because of robotics. They are also over two times as likely to show gains in their interest of STEM fields and are about three times more likely to enroll in an engineering course their first year of college.

Because of this new extracurricular activity, students are not only having fun, but they are also learning team cooperation and are making strides to graduating college with a degree in something they can make a good living and enjoy doing.

Later this month there will be more than 400 robotics teams competing in Detroit for the FIRST Robotics Global competition.

The Global event will be split into two different venues, half will compete in Houston from April 18-21, and the second half will be held at Detroit’s Cobo Center from April 25-28.

Great Lakes Bay FAN moves forward MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI UNIVERSITY CENTER – The new Great Lakes Bay Region chapter of Families Against Narcotics is continuing to make progress in the ongoing struggle against the area’s, and country’s, opioid epidemic.

At the monthly meeting Thursday, April 12 – held in classroom F025 – Vice President Lori Ziolkowski expressed great enthusiasm as she discussed how Hope Not Handcuffs has been coming along. Ziolkowski remarked that FAN has already been able to help 1,125 addicts in five other communities receive treatment over the past year.

In addition, Great Lakes Bay FAN has managed to get the police force in all of the tri-cities on board with the program. Donald F. Pussehl, police chief of Saginaw Township, had joined on the same day as the meeting.

“That is one way that we’ve made a tangible difference,” said Ziolkowski. “We’re working out the details with our law enforcement on what exactly that’s going to be, but we’re looking at a tentative launch date [for Hope Not Handcuffs] on June 1.

Before we can do this, there is one single thing that we need, and that is angels.”

Ziolkowski stated that they are looking to get 50 volunteers to join the Hope Not Handcuffs program in time for the launch date. A two-hour training session for volunteers will happen late in the month of May, although plans are still being organized.

Volunteers will learn how to assist addicts who seek treatment by making phone calls and arranging transportation for them to get proper treatment.

Ziolkowski also shared a recent experience she had with attending the funeral of a relative who died of a drug overdose after a 15-year-long struggle.

“This stole everything from him; his marriage, his job, his health and eventually, his life,” said Ziolkowski. “At 50 years old, that’s not supposed to happen. This is why we are all here, to stop this epidemic.”

Following Ziolkowski’s speech, “Stigmatic: Our Opioid Crisis,” a documentary produced by Delta College alumnus Garrett Morgan, was shown to attendees. Free Narcan training was also provided after the meeting.

“We are so happy that you’re here,” said Ziolkowski. “We’re trying to make a positive difference in what’s going on with this epidemic.”

UNIVERSITY CENTER – For the last Board of Trustees meeting of the winter semester, Delta students were recognized for their awards and scholarships for the 2017-18 school year. The board continued with normal business where they approved roadway lighting upgrades on Delta’s main campus for a total of $160,102, as well as the purchase of 281 computers at a cost of $406,935.

The next board meeting will be held Tuesday, May 8 on Delta’s main campus. The dinner meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. in room N-007 with the regularly scheduled meeting started at 7 p.m.

Tips when approaching gendernonconforming folks JESSICA SIEROCKI The world is changing and so are people. In this day and age, people are beginning to feel comfortable finding and expressing who they truly are. For those of us who are not members of the community, here are a few tips for those who have never had the privilege to interact with a gender-nonconforming person.

Gender identity and sexual orientation are two different things.

Just because a person is assigned male or female at birth, it does not mean that that is how they wish to be identified. Genitalia does not define how a person perceives or expresses themself. On top of that, sexuality can be just as fluid; everyone, despite gender identity or expression, has their own taste regarding whom they prefer to date or find attractive. This, in no way, is affected by genitalia or one’s gender identity.

If you’re unsure of what pronouns to use, just ask.

It’s always better to ask for clarification instead of offending someone. Gender-nonconforming people are referred to with the pronouns “they, them and their,” or whatever pronouns they choose. If you do not feel comfortable using particular pronouns to address a person, just simply use their name, or don’t refer to them at all.

And for all you grammar geeks out there, the word “they” was deemed a singular, third-person pronoun by the American Dialect Society, so it actually is a grammatically correct usage of the word.

Even if you do not agree, don’t be rude Not all of us have to share the same values. If you do not agree with the pronouns nonbinary folks use, please do not go out of your way to call them the wrong pronoun. Again, if you are ever uncomfortable with a pronoun aside from what sex a person is assigned, call them by their name. No one needs that kind of negativity as they are on their journey of selfdiscovery. It can be incredibly mean and detrimental.

They are just people.

All people deserve to be treated with respect.

Period. Just treat gender-nonconforming people like they are regular people, because they are, just like everyone else.

We’re here, we’re queer JACK RECHSTEINER Hot Take: There needs to be a change in how we talk about queer folks.

And yes, I said queer. Not gay, or LGBT or even LGBT+, but queer. As someone who is queer themselves (I’m asexual and agender, gotta #represent) I try to be involved with the different communities in the area and try to stay informed on what’s happening with queer communities in general. And there is something I’m sick and tired of seeing over and over again: LGBT. It’s a bad term, and we need to stop using it. It’s an awkward mouthful to say, it’s outdated and, most importantly, it’s not inclusive.

Gender and sexual identities cover such a broad spectrum that they can’t be confined to oversimplified categories, like heterosexual or homosexual and cisgender or transgender. By being based on that social system of one-or-theother binaries, the term LGBT limits how we can perceive and think about gender and sexuality. Using LGBT as a blanket term to refer to anyone who isn’t straight and cisgender excludes so many people who are queeridentifying. Even the slightly more inclusive “LGBT+” still places emphasis on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons and invalidates those who fall outside of those categories. Who wants to say “We’re here, we’re LGBT+”? No thank you. It sounds more like a sandwich order than something that someone can proudly identify as. So, let’s all agree to stop it with the weird acronym stuff and use a better word: queer.

“But wait! Isn’t queer a... bad word?” one may ask, which is not entirely wrong. In the past, “queer” has been used as a derogatory term but has since been reclaimed as a word of pride and identity by queer folks, who identify under a broad umbrella of various identities and expressions.

This is part of what makes it such a powerful word to use.

Instead of conforming to ideas of the cis-heteronormative, either-or binary, the term queer explodes those categories and lets people place themselves on the rainbow spectrum of identity wherever they feel is the most accurate. And, unlike “LGBT+”, the word queer can be used as an identity by someone who isn’t sure about their identity but knows that it isn’t cisgender/heterosexual or by someone who is fluid in their identity. Someone who doesn’t feel comfortable telling everyone their gender or sexual identity can still refer to themselves as queer without having to explain their identity.

What it comes down to is that queer is a unifying word that recognizes and celebrates all the ways someone can identify in ways that LGBT can’t.

Many people have fought to reclaim queer as a word and an identity. Not to use the word queer as a source of pride would be disempowering and excluding to many queer people. So, please, help make the world a little better and a little queerer.

Collegiate Tries It: Shooting a Glock COLLEGIATE STAFF With the gun reform movement continuing to take hold, a few Delta Collegiate members decided to put guns into their own hands and form firsthand opinions on the Second Amendment.

Duncan’s Outdoor Shop, a gun and rifle range located in Bay City, is tucked away behind an auction building on Salzburg Avenue.

“I personally have no interest in furthering my shooting technique, however I would recommend our instructor as well as Duncan’s for anyone who would like to,” says Haley Nagel, Delta Collegiate reporter.

Some Collegiate members were anxious in anticipation as they waited to see and hold a gun for the first time.

The Collegiate divided up into two rows, one to shoot a 9-millimeter Glock 17, the other shooting a 9-millimeter Glock 19.

Duncan’s was oddly hard to locate – this was the biggest struggle for our team, as it was hidden behind a bigger building and far from the road on which the address is found. After entering, the gunshop was bright, rustic and loud with participants eager to handle guns. Our instructor, Ray, greeted us at the counter and lectured on gun safety.

Ray was helpful and informative. The six Collegiate staff members took turns shooting our targets two at a time.

“I had never seen a gun in my life and never really had a desire to, but when I heard about the opportunity I decided to face my fears and give it a shot,” says Robynn Verhaeghe, Delta Collegiate page designer. “When first arriving to Duncan’s it was slightly overwhelming trying to figure out how to get set up to get on the range, though our instructor was very helpful and knowledgeable.”

Other Collegiate members were more experienced in the gun area but were excited to shoot locally with more instruction.

“I admittedly shoot guns more frequently than the average person, but it was nice to get back on the range.

It’s been a few years, and I was in need of some practice.

The hardest part was actually finding the building,” says Kevin Lazzaro, Delta Collegiate videographer.

Overall, Duncan’s was a great experience for the Collegiate staff. Through the anti-gun movement, we brought our liberal- and conservative-leaning staff to form empirical opinions on the topic. Our instructor guided our experience in a positive way, through thorough guidance and comfortable safety instruction.

The Collegiate Staff recommends Duncan’s for any first-time shooter or experienced pro.

“I thought that Duncan’s had a really nice facility, and the instructor was really great. The Glock that I got to shoot is definitely a good contender for a gun I would buy in the future when I turn 21 and get my CPL,” says Carter Houtman, Delta Collegiate reporter. “I think everyone should go and at least shoot a gun once, just to have the experience and knowledge of why so many Americans own and shoot guns on a regular basis for recreation.”

Delta students place at DECA international competition JESSICA SIEROCKI

ARLINGTON, VA – Members from Delta College’s DECA traveled to Arlington, Virginia to compete against students from around the globe at the International Career Development Conference. Students Nicole Horn, Jonas Morey and Brock DeLisle represented Delta by placing in their event categories Saturday, April 14.

DECA is a business club that gives students the opportunity to compete in events against other students from surrounding universities. Lori Ziolkowski, associate professor of management, is the DECA adviser. She says she is very proud of her students.

“One of the best things about being the adviser is watching our students succeed in a highly competitive atmosphere. We had 3 students finish in the top 12 or better this year which is the most finalists Delta College has ever had. I’m so proud of them for taking time out

of their busy schedules to meet the requirements of the club which include completing community service projects, fundraising and preparing for competition,” says Ziolkowski.

Horn and Morey competed as partners in Marketing Communications, earning top 10 in the competition.

Both Horn and Morey were excited with their recognition and the ability to represent Delta College at an international level.

“Qualifying as a top-10 recipient feels extremely rewarding and enriching. I was proud to have had the opportunity to represent Delta College and stand on stage with my partner among some of the best business students in the nation,” says Horn.

This is the third year Horn has been a member of DECA but the first that she has competed at the collegiate

level. Horn enjoys competing in DECA competitions because it helps her prepare for future endeavors in the business world.

Morey has been involved with DECA for two years and enjoys the idea of being challenged by going up against other students in their event category.

“It was amazing going to internationals and getting to enjoy Washington, D.C. as it is, but competing for an actual world championship is pretty special” says Morey.

After a surprise change in competition events, DeLisle pulled a first place win at the statewide competition in Banking Financial Services. He went to the ICDC feeling confident with his knowledge and skills and earned top 12 at the competition.

“I knew that there were a lot of qualified competitors there, and just to hear my name called was pretty exciting,” says DeLisle.

The ICDC was the last event for DECA members this school year, though the club is open to new members this upcoming fall. Ziolkowski encourages students to join and get the chance to compete.

“Joining Collegiate DECA is a great way to meet fellow students who have similar interests and majors. It’s a great way to be involved on campus, make new friends and do some good in the community,” says Ziolkowski.

To become a member, there is a $30 annual due.

Ending male violence one community at a time HALEY GRAY

UNIVERSITY CENTER – With 97 percent of all domestic and violent crimes in America being committed by men, Ed Heisler, along with local women, asked what they could do to decrease this statistic. This question led to the creation of the Don’t Buy It Program which strives to reach out to young men to help stop the chain of male domestic abuse, sexual exploitation and trafficking of women.

Collaborating with the Underground

Railroad of Saginaw, the Don’t Buy It Program came to Delta College on Friday, April 13 to bring more awareness to male violence, specifically speaking to young men. With a crowd of around 40 people, Heisler spoke about not only the statistics of violence toward women, but about what causes men to commit these acts, such as pornography and the media.

Heisler spoke to the crowd as if it were a group of peers, not trying to shame anyone for these acts, but to make the men in the room hold a stronger grasp on how they can treat women as equals.

Allie Martinez with the Underground Railroad of Saginaw was one of the main collaborators of this presentation, helping to bring these vast issues of sex trafficking and violence against women in the local Tri-City and Bay area to light.

“Men are not just lacking in the conversation, but we need men to be involved,” Martinez says.

DBIP’s main goal is to get men involved in their communities and to show them the actions that can lead to creating

violent offenders. Believing that those who become violent begin at young-teen ages, up until early adulthood making these groups the focus of how porn and strip clubs are examples of exploitation of women.

Heisler shared beliefs that exploiting women in these ways shows a maledominant, female-submissive persona, reinforcing the belief that men are superior to women.

Jeff Giddings with the Boys and Girls Club in Saginaw and Holly Miller of Big Brothers Big Sisters both were speakers at the event, elaborating on how young boys without a male role model in their lives typically are the ones who commit these violent acts, stressing the importance of positive male role models in the lives of adolescents.

With resources provided by DBIP such as online tools, volunteer options and even pledges not to purchase sex, to value humanness in everyone, not to patronize strip clubs, to encourage others not to participate in objectifying or exploiting

anyone, to participate in their community through volunteering, time, money and other resources, all of which help support victims of commercial sexual exploitation.

With nationwide recognition of the DBIP growing due to advertisements during football games and in men’s restrooms, the goal of ending the exploitation of women and eradicating sex trafficking seems more of a reality now than ever before.

Wish clothes, for better or worse AUBRIE SMITH The wish.com ads are compelling, I will give them that. One day, while twiddling my thumbs between commitments, I stumbled across wish reviews on YouTube. For $5 clothes, almost all of the reviewers seemed pleasantly surprised.

I was compelled, especially as a thicker woman.

One noticeable thing the YouTubers had in common was their small build.

I wondered if Wish would cater to my 12-to-14-sized body, so I set out on a journey.

The purchases: One-size-fits-all bralette ($1) One-size-fits-all is always a tricky one for plus-size girls. It’s impossible that the same article of clothing that fits an XS is going to fit an XXL. It makes no logical sense, but still we have these items that call themselves “One size fits all.” So, I bought it.

Verdict: One size that only fits my tenyear-old niece.

To be fair, I watched one of the YouTubers buy this item and it fit perfectly – she actually loved it, but alas, my size-14 body was not squeezing into that. Sad day. The material actually felt like it would be supportive and comfortable, but it also seemed that it would be an absolute disaster for someone with any bust at all. Even if I could have fit my body into it, it would have been too see-through to serve a point after the stretch. This was a fail.

Casual Skinny Jeggings ($10) size: XXL I followed the sizing guidelines here because I knew things were going to get questionable. I usually wear size-14 jeans,

a size large shirt. Wow, I’m really throwing it all out there, aren’t I? According to the size guide on Wish, I should have ordered an XL in these pants.

However, I decided to go one size up, “just in case.”

Verdict: My first comment about these pants was: “Wow, they feel like a washcloth.” The material of these pants is something that I have never experienced in clothing. It was honestly concerning.

Nonetheless, I headed to my room to put them on because I was still excited about $10 jeggings. Upon entering my room and unfolding the pants, I quickly realized that there was no way my body was getting into them, but I tried anyway.

These pants, one size bigger than the website suggested I order, would not even go past my calves. I tried extremely hard, but there is no way to suck in your calf muscle, it’s just not a thing. This item was my second fail, and I started to get discouraged. Alas, I will run around making making friends feel them and their weird texture before using them for their only logical purpose as a washcloth.

Beige suede ankle booties ($17) size:9 I was particularly excited about this purchase. I mean, how can you mess up shoes, right? Sizing is pretty standard, and unless they’re uncomfortable, the fit doesn’t change much between foot models. I was looking for some cute boot heels to add to my collection, and since I’m a female who hates shoe shopping, I was excited to have an excuse to order them online in a lazy fashion.

The verdict: These boots were the only thing that made this cart worth it.

These boots were actually super cute.

They shocked me, and I quite literally did a happy dance after I opened them.

The material is not the best quality, and the zipper on the right boot sticks every time you attempt to zip it, but compared to the rest of the outfit, these brought me an abundance of joy. I even wore them in public. Joyus day!

Sequined loose t-shirt ($4) size:XL In a weird phenomenon, this shirt looked absolutely awful on the Wish model they hired for advertisement and amazing on a customer in a review posted to the site, so I decided to try it. Again, I checked the sizing chart to make sure I didn’t swindle myself. It told me to order an XL, and since that was the largest option, that is exactly what I did.

This purchase had a lot more reviews than some of the items that I had already added to my cart, and these seemed generally more positive, and that was exciting. However, the look on the model still was not super cute and had me worried that I didn’t really know what I was ordering.

The verdict: I bought a disco ball.

This shiny shirt was a thing of my childhood dreams. I put it on and was

automatically inducted into to a 10-yearold dance group. I’m looking forward to our upcoming recital, I’ll shoot you all an invite. This shirt was undowdibly the worst purchase of the bunch. The material was wrinkled and itchy, the sequins were not sewed on completely causing some to fall off and others to jingle as you walk and the shape was more flattering than if I walked around in a straight leotard.

Wearing this made me sad.

Overall: Cost of clothes: $32 Cost of purchase with shipping and tax: $51 I was really excited to get an entire outfit, including a bra and shoes for $32. In most cases, unless you’re a thrift shop pro, that is unheard of. However, I was really disappointed in the sizing.

Completely aware of my plus-size body, I was careful to follow sizing guidelines put in place by Wish and look over reviews for more information on fit. Unfortunately, they did not meet my needs in any way, and I won’t be a repeat customer. This was their weakest point, in my opinion.

My other annoyance was shipping costs. I understand they’re there to make a profit, and the cost needs to come somehow, but I could have gone out and actually found clothes that fit for $52 and I would actually wear these. Instead, because returns and refunds are a hassle, these will going straight to Goodwill-except the pants, which will be torn into washcloths, and the shoes which I will wear with pride.

Tri-Cities celebrate Record Store Day 2018 MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI

Record Store Day has celebrated thousands of independently owned record stores around the world since 2007, and on April 21, 2018, the Tri-Cities joined in the fun.

Long lines formed outside of Records & Tapes Galore in Saginaw that morning, before the record store opened its doors at 10 a.m. Having been in business for more than four decades, Records & Tapes Galore showed no signs of slowing down as they offered a wide selection of new and used albums and official Record Store Day-exclusive releases.

The Electric Kitsch in Bay City and Radio Wasteland in Midland also offered RSD exclusives and thousands of albums of many

different genres to choose from.

The Electric Kitsch opened at 10 a.m. as well and featured bargain bins full of record albums priced at 50 cents each.

Two hours after they closed for the day, they hosted an after party at Governor’s Quarters in Bay City at 8 p.m., with free prizes and coupons to the Electric Kitsch.

Radio Wasteland opened its doors at 9 a.m., one hour earlier than the other two stores. This was the second time that Radio Wasteland celebrated Record Store Day since opening for business in January 2017, and its first time as an officially licensed RSD affiliate.

“This is actually my first [Record Store Day],” says Tyler

Gray, Midland. “I enjoy all the different rare records that come in, and also the extensive collection specifically at [Radio Wasteland].”

Owner Jim Gleason hosted several in-store raffle drawings for various prizes throughout the day. In addition, Brett Mitchell performed live at the store from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

“It’s a great collection here, and the owner is really nice,” says Romlynn Ramos from London, England, who was also celebrating Record Store Day for the first time.

‘Ready Player One’ is ready for the future of nostalgia

Delta AFA students honored at art exhibition MICHAEL PIWOWARSKI SAGINAW – From a teapot that looks like a fox to items made out of felted soap, from oil on canvas to graphite on paper, people enjoyed a wide variety of art on display at the 2018 Student Art Exhibition and Awards show.

Hosted by the Saginaw Warehouse Artist Guild – at its studio located at 1840 N. Michigan Ave. – the show featured artwork by Delta College students in the American Fine Arts program.

“We have a lot of serious students that are going on to Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, one in College for Creative Studies in Detroit, another one got accepted into Grand Valley’s art program, just to name a few,” says Michael Glowacki, assistant professor of art at Delta College.

Garrett Weslock, the co-founder and executive director of SWAG, presented awards to students who were enrolled in the program. Delta Collegiate page designer Cody Wiedenbein was one of the recipients, winning a first place award for portfolio.

Erin Hartsell, who won an honorable mention award for ceramics at the show, says that the professors in the AFA program have been very helpful in achieving her goals.

“Plan out what you want to do and make sure that you’re doing something above and beyond every time,” says Hartsell. “It’s something you’ll be able to keep, and people will definitely appreciate looking at your work.”

The Saginaw Warehouse Artist Guild opened in December of 2016, and since then has offered opportunities for artists who are serious about their work to come and use the studio space to work on their art projects with other guild members. Both students and general artists are welcome.

Michael Glowacki says that future student exhibition shows will be hosted at different venues across the Great Lakes Bay Region and that next year’s show is likely to be hosted at Studio 23 in Bay City.

“Ready Player One” is a movie that’s set just far enough into the future that it can look back nostalgically at an interesting time: right now.

As we’ve all been stumbling our way through the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a trend of clinging to the nostalgia of earlier years and trying to bring those good old days with them into the future.

This retro-fused-with-modern trend is prevalent in everything, from blockbuster reboots of old franchises, to video games being remastered and re-released, to new creations like “Stranger Things” that are made to replicate the feeling of nostalgia.

And now we may have reached new heights of artificial nostalgia with Steven Spielberg’s latest movie “Ready Player One.” It’s the year 2045 in the faroff land of Columbus, Ohio.

We’re introduced to the movie’s main character, Wade Watts, and his life in “The Stacks,” which is essentially a slum so overpopulated that they had to start stacking trailer homes on top of each other to create precarious skyscrapers tied together with junk. The world is so beyond repair that most people, Wade Watts included, spend the majority of their time escaping from the world to go to the OASIS, an entirely immersive online reality where one can go anywhere, do anything and be anyone. Wanna be an anime vixen that hangs out with Batman and rides around on a flying light-bike? Go right ahead.

The plot of the movie is set on Wade solving a series of cryptic quests that were posthumously put into the OASIS by the awkward, stereotypical-techgenius creator of the OASIS, James Halliday. Wade and his friends Art3mis and Aech are obsessed with being the first to figure out Halliday’s riddles to claim the Willy Wonka-esque prize: control of the OASIS and Halliday’s company (which Halliday mentions is worth millions – wait, no, trillions of dollars.)

Throughout “Ready Player One” this rag-tag team of underdogs is competing against Innovative Online Industries, a looming monolith of capitalism that will do anything necessary to win the game and take control of the OASIS. Wade and Co.’s adventures take them through a fantasy New York as they race past King Kong, a surreal and brilliant trip through Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and an all-out war for the OASIS that features more crossover characters than a Super Smash Bros. game. All of this together makes “Ready Player One” feel like a rose-tinted look at pop culture, that occasionally slips in visions of a horrifying dystopian future.

There are glimpses into the bleakness of that future when we watch Art3mis get taken by Innovative Online Industries to work in the same corporate sweatshop where her father had died, working in indentured servitude for a debt he could never pay off. The movie has moments of darkness that are never on the screen for too long, but transforms the feeling of nostalgia into one of escapism.

The people in this future world use virtual reality and pop culture to escape from the broken world they live in that they’ve given up on fixing. It might not be so much looking back as it is looking away.

These moments that hint at looking deeper at the issues in the world of “Ready Player One” are rare though, and instead using them to say something significant “Ready Player One” sticks to its script of being a rollercoaster ride of references and Spielberg-sized action scenes. It revels in being familiar and innovative at the same time, with visuals that sleekly combine live action performances with glossy CGI to create a world that feels like virtual reality. “Ready Player One” may not be a deep, thought-provoking piece of cinema, but it’s a high-energy action blockbuster that promises to be fun for the time it takes to watch it.

What is going to be the great art movement that defines the beginning of the 21st century? I think that we’re living through it right now, and it is memes.

Memes have been around for a while now. If you look at the how memes have evolved ever since internet culture took off in the early 2000s, we’ve seen rather straightforward, funny memes of LOLcats and Rickrolling gradually turn into a wildly surreal culture of abstract sarcasm and in-jokes, like “All Star” by Smash Mouth, Whomst, I have the high ground Anakin, Renaissance art memes, Vaporwave, John Cena, ANGERY, Bone Apple Tea and so many others that will all probably be old by the time this article comes out. They’re jokes with almost no joke attached to them. They’re ridiculous for the sake of being ridiculous. They’re confusing to the point that they raise

more questions than they answer. And they are art that defies all preconceived notions.

Just in the past few years we’ve seen headlines from mainstream news source like “‘Trump’s behavior similar to male chimpanzee,’ says Jane Goodall,” “Is Ted Cruz the Zodiac Killer? Maybe, says 38 percent of Florida voters,” and “Harambe: Stop making memes of our dead gorilla, Cincinnati Zoo pleads.” So already we’re seeing the absurdism and senselessness of the world in this day and age just in news headlines alone.

Disenfranchised American millennials and Generation Z-ers have been living through a time where their country has been involved in a long, ethically debatable and terrifyingly ambiguous war in the Middle East, an economic recession that was caused by wealthy elites who were not held accountable and an unequal distribution of wealth that’s worse than anything we’ve seen before. Millennials and Gen Z-ers have had to experience that at the same time that police brutality, school shootings and extremist violence are all on the rise, and older generations are accusing them of laziness, even though they’re the generations that caused all these problems in the first place. This kind of life and world reality have given the youth of this era a similar mindset to

Cardi B: ‘Invasion of Privacy’ or Invasion to the mainstream?

RYAN REICHARD Cardi B burst into the mainstream last summer with her bonafide hit, “Bodak Yellow,” leaving everyone emphatically rapping along. And, as they say, a star was born. “Bodak Yellow” was a huge commercial success, topping the Billboard 100 for 3 weeks, becoming the longest running song by a solo female MC. It seemed she was destined for big things. So, how did her full-length debut “Invasion of Privacy” turn out?

To many, including this critic, Cardi B is a breath of fresh air in a rap game that’s male dominated. She brings the raw, visceral flows that are very reminiscent of Lil’ Kim in the best of ways. A perfect example of this is in her song “Thru Your Phone.” Cardi brings out the anger found in finding your lover cheating on you by looking through their phone.

On the album’s lead single “Bodak Yellow,” Cardi B ferociously raps “Little b–tch, you can’t f–ck with me if you wanted to…” establishing her as a force not to be messed with. Cardi B’s raps are beyond that of a debut album. They are seasoned with a flow of someone you would expect to be on their third or fourth album. On top of that, Cardi has the charisma in her voice to carry complex flows without stumbling over phrases.

When it comes to lyrics, this is, to me, where the album shines the brightest. Cardi addresses several issues such as the infidelity of fiancé and Migos member

Offset. On “Thru Your Phone” she raps: “I seen y’all little group texts where you all like to brag about your hoes.” Although she raps it with fury, there is a ting of heartbreak in her voice, signifying the truth of the lyrics.

And on “Ring” Cardi puts front and center the heartbreak of a lover, ignoring you: “And you ain’t hit me up in a while / Actin’ like you don’t know what number to dial / You quit, then that’s it, I’ma throw in the towel.” While these lyrics are a deep confessional, they communicate a universal message to which anyone can certainly relate.

However, on other songs Cardi raps about haters doubting her and her success showing them up: “Now I’m a boss, I write my own name on the checks,” she brags with confidence.

In terms of production, “Invasion of Privacy” features many of your standard hip-hop elements that are found all along the airwaves today, such as the standard trap beat (gritty, hard synthesizers in conjunction with rhythmic snares.) This percussion dominates songs like “Thru Your Phone” and “Money Bag.” But on other songs such as be careful Cardi incorporates a sample of Lauryn Hill’s iconic 1998 hit “Ex-Factor,” which surprisingly complements her flow very well.

What really makes this album stand out in terms of production are songs like “I Like It,” where Cardi B pays

homage to Caribbean heritage by including Colombian reggaetón artist J Balvin and Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny. Throughout the song there are Spanish horns and in the first few seconds of the song Spanish guitar, followed by a Caribbean-influenced, bass-heavy beat.

You might as well buckle up, because on “Invasion of Privacy” Cardi B proves she’s here to invade the mainstream by proving she’s one of the most interesting to arrive this decade. For me, I am going to give this 4 out of 5 stars and one of the strongest debuts this decade from any genre.

Delta College celebrates Earth Day CARTER HOUTMAN, HALEY NAGEL & JACK RECHSTEINER UNIVERSITY CENTER – Every year, Earth Day is celebrated worldwide as a day to promote sustainable living, recycling, reducing pollution and promoting clean alternative energy sources.

For Delta College, this means inviting speakers to talk to students about different projects, findings, and ways they can help better the planet in the next year.

Faculty panel The Delta College Earth Day faculty panel started with roughly 25 attendees dividing into groups to work together to create questions dealing with climate change issues affecting Michigan, such as the impact of heavy precipitation, flooding and warmer winters, that were asked to the panel of Delta faculty members to answer and talk about.

Alison Ginter, Delta’s campus Life and Student Engagement coordinator, was the moderator for the event and introduced the Delta College instructors who made up the extreme weather and climate change panel. The forum was made up of: • Andrea Bair, instructor of geology who has done research on how rivers are impacted by climate change • Wendy Baker, professor of biology who has worked for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality • Janis Kendziorski, associate professor of accounting who is a member of the Earth Day committee and the Sierra Club • Elizabeth Ullrich, associate professor of political science who has in-depth knowledge of international political

discussion surrounding climate change.

“In the June 2017 flood, there were four counties designated as disaster zones, and each homeowner was reimbursed for $42,000, but currently the national flood insurance companies are $2.5 billion in debt. So, where is that money coming from?” says Kendziorski.

“The infrastructure we have is getting aged. Our infrastructure

“Two intertwined issues is that we know our current understanding of assessing flood risk isn’t working, so we can have different methods of bailing people out – literally and figuratively – maybe we need to convert the land to a different use. My big example is Midland: The parks, ballfields, everything gets flooded all the time, so that might be good use for land because that is land that’s getting flooded without any permanent buildings or structures that are getting damaged,” says Bair.

“We also need to look at drinking water supplies. As we experience more rainfall the flooding will bring more runoff

that is getting used by our homes and municipalities is being used for heating, but very soon in the future we’re going to see that flip, and our main energy usage will be used for cooling in the summers. Some might argue that rising winter costs will reduce our energy, but they’re missing the other side of the issue that we’ll be dealing with if temperatures continue to rise,” says Bair.

‘Growing Where We Live’ speaker One of the on-campus presentations, “Growing Where We Live,” was presented by Ben Cohen who introduced the idea of a Delta College seed library

and Small House Farm, where he lives and works in Sanford, MI. A seed library, for those who don’t know, is just like any other kind of library, but instead of books, they have seeds to check out. There aren’t any sort of ‘“ate fees” for not returning them on time, but they do encourage you to save seeds from a couple of the plants to bring back after you have grown the kind of plant that you checked out.

These are a big deal for sustainable living in Michigan.

Out of the 500 seed libraries that are in the United States, Michigan has 47 of them.

Michigan ranks second in number of seed libraries, only behind California.

Cohen’s presentation ended with attendees leaving with a packet of seeds of a species of their choosing, and the dedication of a new seed library at Delta College. Learn more about the seed library community at www.seedlibrary. org.

The Sustainability Office was able to raise funds in large part by the sale of Earth Day-themed shirts, and the Environmental Club will be working to raise money through bake-sale proceeds.

To conclude Earth Day, the Environmental Club will be gave away 200 trees to Delta students and faculty on Monday, April 23.

OPINION The First Amendment let our voices be heard AUBRIE SMITH I cannot express how amazing this opportunity and team has been.

Being a business major, I would have never guessed that my educational path would have led me to journalism, but I cannot explain how glad I am that it has. The Collegiate has allowed me to gain firsthand experiences with the First Amendment and the rights I have to speak out on a public platform. Though there will always be opposing opinions and controversy surrounding the Collegiate, and press in general, it has been great to have a team standing behind our words. The Collegiate has become my family, and I cannot describe how grateful I have been to be a part of this team.

KELLEN MACGREGOR Having an outlet for publishing absurd thoughts that pop into my head has proven itself a job that I will neither forget nor easily find again.

Who else can say they were paid to write a satirical story about foreskin in a salad? Along the way of delving into my subconscious to find the obscurest pieces of humor in my mind and in everyday life, I have also met some of the kindest, funniest and most supportive coworkers and friends that any job has given me. I will certainly miss our brainstorming sessions that eventually turned into digressions, our Collegiate Tries It outings and our various collaborations with one another throughout the semesters. JESSICA SIEROCKI Working for the Collegiate has opened my eyes to the world of media and politics. Being able to report the truth and express my opinions is a freedom that I used to take for granted. Working with the Collegiate has let me exercise my First Amendment right and have a platform to speak out about injustices happening in our world and being able to write articles about what is happening in our local areas. It has been an affirming experience to know that if you want to have a voice and if you want to have representation, then there is a level of that which we can have here at the Delta Collegiate. Thank you for lending me your time and listening to me while I served on the Delta Collegiate, I hope that my time here may have inspired some people or opened the eyes of others. From here I’m going to continue working toward the better, more progressive future that we all deserve.

OPINION What is your opinion of the Donald Trump and Stormy Daniels scandal?

Rachel Seager, 20, Saginaw “I think it’s just a publicity stunt.

It’s kind of silly that it’s in the news, because it happened forever ago, and I understand that now they’re putting a lot more emphasis on sexual harassment and things like that, but [sex] is what [Stormy Daniels] does for a living.”

Jonathan Pomeroy, 32, Bay City “Stormy Daniels has her side, Trump has his side, so it will eventually be settled.”

Meghan Bokhart, 30, Bay City “It’s just their own personal business, and what they want to do with their own selves.”

Trump slept with a pornstar – who cares?

CARTER HOUTMAN If you don’t know, Stormy Daniels is a pornstar who claims that she slept with President Trump before he became president and was paid $120,000 to be quiet about it before the 2016 election.

What I don’t understand, however, is why everyone seems to care so much about whether or not Trump slept with a pornstar years ago on his own time with his own money while he was married.

Look at John F. Kennedy, for example.

He had affair upon affair with women in the White House, he had women literally brought to him in the middle of the day for skinny dipping in the White House pool while his wife and children were upstairs. He had women brought through the Treasury tunnel into the White House, so the press wouldn’t get a whiff of the immorality occurring in the Oval Office.

JFK even had an affair with Marilyn Monroe. All of this took place on taxpayer time, with taxpayer money and no one bats an eye. People even think that he was one of the best presidents of all time, but was he really?

Then, we can look at Bill Clinton. He was known for being inappropriate with women who worked for him. A number of women, like Juanita Broaddrick, even

went so far as to accuse him of rape. This all also happened on the taxpayer’s dollar, while Clinton was in office. No one really cares about that either. Congress did more in that situation than they did with Kennedy, but even that doesn’t pale in comparison to the amount of airtime this situation with Stormy Daniels is getting.

Trump is immoral. He’s brash, he tweets a lot, says some pretty politically incorrect things and offends lots of people. He’s oafish and tends to make people dislike him before they like him. But we’ve had plenty of presidents before him who have been far worse in the same categories and have gotten away with it without so much as a blemish in their biographies that sold millions.

I don’t care what he does on his own time. I don’t care what happens behind the scenes with his marriage or with his family. I don’t care who he sleeps with and I don’t care if he paid her to be quiet or not. Plenty of presidents have had affairs, and a lot of them had them when they were in office rather than years before they even considered running for office.

I really don’t care and I don’t think you should either.

A sad farewell AUBRIE SMITH Over the last 2 years, I have poured out my most intimate details onto the printed pages of the Delta Collegiate. I have held nothing back, showing you all how much of a mess my life really is; I did it eagerly and without hesitation.

Words cannot describe how sad it is that my time at the Delta Collegiate is coming to an end. It saddens my heart that I will no longer be able to share my professional life with you all, as co-editorin-chief, nor my emotional and personal life as this columnist.

It has been such a pleasure to let you all into my life and to share my advice with you over these 2 years. Thank you for anyone who followed my column and

looked forward to my bad humor.

I look forward to the rest of my educational journey, and I hope you all the best and brightest for your future endeavors.

As you embark on your future journeys, remember to communicate your emotions, experiment on your Tinders and laugh whenever possible. Put down your phones, enjoy the company you choose to keep and live your best life.

Don’t ever be afraid to let someone know how you feel, don’t hide any aspect of yourself to compromise for someone else and love yourself before you choose to try to love someone else.

COLLEGIATE COMMENTARY

The Browns await the draft of their dreams JOE THORNTON For those who have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of football season, the wait is almost over. With free agency dwindling down containing an array of large-scale signings, the draft is fast approaching.

With one of the most physically talented runningbacks in the past decade from Saquon Barkley and a quarterback class that’s being regarded with high praise, the hype train has left the station, and there is no turning back.

There are numerous quarterback-hungry teams sitting at the top of the draft order, and with the draft less than a week away, starting on Thursday, April 26, here are my predictions for the first 10 players that will come off the board.

Cleveland Browns: Sam Darnold, QB. With the first pick in a draft and an 0-16 record, you need a face of the franchise. You have to give your fanbase hope.

Although the Browns went out and got Tyrod Taylor in free agency, they don’t see him as a long-term solution. He was only signed on a two-year contract, serving mainly as a transitional player as a future QB develops.

The Browns’ staff flocked in numbers on USC’s pro day to watch Darnold, and he is the perfect mix of talent and preparedness that the Browns are looking for.

New York Giants: Saquon Barkley, RB. After the Browns take Darnold, the Giants won’t be able to turn down the most physically talented player in the draft. With all the Odell drama, the Giants’ office will be looking to find another offensive star to complement for cheap. QB will be tempting, but I don’t think they’ll pull the trigger, the Giants are too keen on Eli to let him go just yet.

New York Jets: Josh Rosen, QB. The Jets made an aggressive trade-up with the Colts to get the third pick. It doesn’t make any sense for them to be going to such lengths for anything less than a QB. With Darnold off the board, the Jets will opt for Rosen, a QB with less physical talent but a more polished overall player.

Sitting behind McCown for a year will only refine Rosen on the mental side of the ball and put the Jets in a good position moving forward.

Chicago Bears: Denzel Ward, CB. The Bears have lots of gaps to fill and in this position they will be hoping to find a star cover corner, something essential the Bears have been missing. Ward won’t be moving very far from Ohio State and his attitude as a consistent and talented cornerback will make him a viable option.

Cleveland Browns: Bradley Chubb, DE.

San Francisco: Roquan Smith, LB.

The Browns are going to have a great day securing not only the best physical talent at QB, but also the best defensive player overall. With Myles Garrett performing spectacularly in his rookie year, the Browns will take Chubb off the board to pair with him.

With Jimmy G. taking over 49er nation, they need some help on the defensive side. Roquan Smith proved how capable he was in his performance at Georgia and he could step in immediately for a depleted linebacking corps.

Denver Broncos: Quenton Nelson, G. The Broncos will take a safe pick at offensive line. Nelson is ranked as the best offensive lineman in the draft, and even the best player in the draft by some. Nelson, offering little downside, will be impossible to turn down if he falls this low, and they’ll take him off the board.

Indianapolis Colts: Tremaine Edmunds, LB. With Chubb being off the board and the Colts struggling defensively over the past few years, their fanbase has been starving for defensive talent.

With Chubb off the board, they’ll take the next best defensive player in Edmunds.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Derwin James, S. The Bucs are hurting in their

Oakland Raiders: Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB. If Fitzpatrick is still sitting here at pick 10 – and I think he will be – the Raiders will have no choice to pick him up.

Fitzpatrick may not be as skilled as a one-on-one corner as Ward, but overall I believe he is the better player and the Raiders will have a day one starter with this pick.

Lady Pioneers keep on swinging JOE THORNTON Even when fighting against the pouring rain and cold, the Delta College softball team has managed to sustain an overall record of 13-9 and boast an impressive conference record of 7-1.

This team is astoundingly entertaining to watch with a team batting average of .394, as there is almost always someone laying down a hit. It is impressive to have such a high batting average at this point in the season, and the Lady Pioneers show no signs of stopping as they scored 16 runs in their most recent game against Alpena Community College.

The Lady Pioneers have managed to win their last three games and hope to continue this win streak as they prepare for a six-game homestand.

Every game is a learning experience when developing a team, but the key for this Delta College softball team as they move forward with their schedule is not to burn out too

quickly. With an overall record only slightly above .500, these players and coaches still face an eight-game road trip through late April and early May. A long series of road games like this is physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting. If the Lady Pioneers can manage to perform well on that trip, then they will undeniably be a dominant team.

They can shape their own fate and destination, sitting at a commanding conference record of 7-1.

The sluggers on this team can only do so much, and in the end, this team will need to see some progression from its pitchers if it wants to find success in the postseason. Regardless, this team has a high ceiling in terms of talent, and if they can pull it all together, they will get everything they deserve.
