When fears come creeping in at night, And when shadows loom and give you a fright, You must stand tall and face the fight, For bravery is what’s right. It’s not a very easy thing to do, To conquer fears and see things through, But strength and courage will pull you through, And lead you to a life anew, So turn around, look in square in the face, If you do not fight it now, It will beat you in the race, If you keep trying to hide from it, It will find you fast and punch you in the face, So you must start to brace, For the fight you’re about to win And if it knocks you to the floor, Get back to your feet, Your fear is the monster, You’re about to beat.

Fight
Your Fears

We love the way ISLA B portrays fear metaphorically, as a monster that can consume us if we don’t make a stand against it.

This poem reminds the reader that we need to face our fears!

Well done ISLA B!

My Painful Allergy

Here I am all alone, with nothing but my little phone. I can’t even play with my mates, all because of something they ate. Not being able to eat nuts feels like fresh scars and cuts, I tell people it puts me in so much pain, but I have to keep telling them again and again.

Hopefully, it will come to an end, so I can do more things with my friends but for now I have to be brave, while my nut allergy lives out the rest of its days.

I shouldn’t be scared, I shouldn’t worry I can make my own food, like a curry, instead of always going to the shop, And having to check everything from bottom to top.

We love the way HARRY F has portrayed overcoming the daily challenge of being a nut allergy sufferer.

This poem really makes the reader relate to how we can all be ‘brave’ in the face of challenge.

Well done HARRY F!

The Appearance of the Flower

The flower flourished in the light, It stood high, tall and bright. It grew up, reaching for the sun, And received inadequate care from the gardener’s son. Down the stalk the plant extended, His health was okay, he pretended. In the mud the long roots lay, And in the mud, they will stay.

One day when the gardener came, The flower told her she must change her game. The flower was given care to avoid drought, The flower was glad it spoke out.

The roots below the ground withered, And the growth of the flower was hindered. The snaking roots were far too dry, And there was not a single sign of rain in the sky.

Up above the flower soaked up the warmth of the day, But below, the flower began to decay, Sadly, nobody knew the flower was not okay.

We love the way ZACH G portrays the plight of the vulnerable flower in the hands of the neglectful gardener.

This poem reminds the reader of the importance of speaking out, using our voices and not being afraid to ask for help when facing challenge.

Well done ZACH G!

“How can you overcome adversity?” and this was used as a stimulus for the poetry competition.

My Father

When my mum and dad broke up, I was very young back then, My dad has been broken, Again, and again and again, But he pulled himself back up, After everything he went through, He broke his back and heart, Then fixed them up brand new.

He has turned it all around, As he has both his boys, He left the force to make his company, One of his many joys. He’s got his own wife, With children and dogs, After all the pain and strife, That is my father, Who is the inspiration of my life.

We love the way LUCAS S truthfully portrays the father as an inspiration.

Such a powerful and heartfelt poem which reminds the reader that we can all overcome challenges and heal the ‘pain and strife’ that life can throw at us.

Well done LUCAS S!

Year 8 2nd PRIZE WINNER James L

Chill

With headphones over head and Lofi turned up to max you lay in your bed eating some snacks.

Maybe you’re on your couch scrolling through your phone or perhaps you are just relieved that you are home. For chill is not a place or something you can see Chill is a feeling inside happy and Free.

We love the simplicity of JAMES L’S portrayal of ‘chilling’ at home, doing want you want in the comfort of your own home.

So simple and yet such a relatable feeling!

Well done JAMES L!

When I read, the words Jump around.

When I read, p and b switch.

When I read, I forget which way round b and d are. This is what it is like to have dyslexia.

I was worried I was told me that I had dyslexia. I didn’t know what it was. but now I understand that dyslexia Is less scary and I am getting better at reading. now I have done an assembly too

I was diagnosed when I was seven. Before I was diagnosed, I had signs of dyslexia. I was behind the class. I could barely read, I could never remember my alphabet and it takes longer for me to understand. This is what it’s like to have dyslexia.

700 students throughout Hull Trinity House Academy. This is what it’s like to have dyslexia. When you can’t do the work, just remember that 1 in 5 people have dyslexia. It makes you special.

I am proud to have dyslexia.

We love the way ALEX G portrays their personal experience of dyslexia. The way Alex plays with the poem’s structure to convey some of the barriers faced, is incredibly powerful and really makes the reader relate.

This poem reminds the reader of the importance of being proud of who you are – we are all individuals – and sometimes it is the challenges we face that make us unique. Alex, you should be more than proud of what you’ve achieved.

Well done ALEX G!
