Delta First launches election platform IAN JACQUES i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta mayoral candidate Melissa Granum and her Delta First team have launched their election platform. In a news release, Delta First says the plan has been shaped by months of listening to the community and is centred on accountable government, affordability, well-planned growth, stronger public safety, better access to health care and a more connected Delta. “The community has told us they want a city council that listens, plans responsibly and puts Delta first,” said Granum. “They want transparency, meaningful engagement and confidence that their tax dollars are being managed carefully. “The Delta First Platform is built around those priorities, with practical commitments to make city hall more accountable and to protect the things that make our community special.” Granum said the platform will restore community voices at the council table through an enforceable Council Code of Conduct with independent oversight,
the return of public question period at regular council meetings and the reestablishment of citizen advisory committees in key policy areas. The platform also commits to a zerobased budget review, clearer financial reporting, long-term infrastructure planning and actions to improve accountability and cost containment at Metro Vancouver. “Delta cannot afford growth that outpaces the roads, utilities, parks, schools and emergency services the community relies on,” Granum said. “As mayor, I will insist on responsible planning, clear information for taxpayers, respectful debate at the council table and meaningful opportunities for the community to shape the future of their neighbourhoods.” Other commitments in the platform include: • Review Delta’s Official Community Plan with meaningful engagement throughout Delta, and challenge provincial housing mandates under Bill 44 to ensure growth is strategic, infrastructure-supported and appropriate for Delta’s unique geography
• Build safer, more livable neighbourhoods through better traffic management, pedestrian safety, support for first responders and emergency planning resources that keep pace with population and industrial growth • Establish Delta Healthcare Centres in partnership with the provincial government, local not-for-profits and health-care providers, creating practical city-supported spaces that help attract doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, mental-health clinicians and other practitioners • Advocate for Delta’s interests in regional transportation planning and demand meaningful consultation with senior governments on port expansion, pipeline operations and other projects of national interest. “In nearly 30 years of living in Delta, I have watched Ladner alone lose all its walk-in medical clinics, as well as a pregnancy and newborn health clinic,” she said. “Families should not have to struggle to find basic, timely care close to home. Health care is a provincial responsibility but our residents need help now.”

Pictured from left to right is council candidate Jat Puri, mayoral candidate Melissa Granum, council candidate Alex Fischer and council candidate Tammy Hansen. She said Delta First will bring a practical, informed approach to public safety, growth and intergovernmental advocacy. “Delta has enormous potential, but the city needs strategic leadership and a stronger voice at the table when provincial, federal and regional decisions affect our community, our environment and our economy,” Granum said. “Our team is committed to bringing people together, demanding answers to tough questions and delivering the accountable, community-focused leadership Delta deserves.” Granum is running for mayor alongside council candidates Jat Puri, Tammy Hansen and Alex Fischer. Achieving for Delta launches Delta at the Table initiative IAN JACQUES i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Mayor George Harvie and the Achieving for Delta team has announced Delta at the Table, a major campaign commitment to give Delta residents a stronger voice in the major projects and government decisions that could shape the community for generations. In a news release, Achieving for Delta says central to this commitment will be the creation of a Delta Future Forum, providing residents, community organizations and stakeholders with a structured opportunity to raise concerns, identify opportunities and discuss the potential impacts of major projects being proposed by senior governments, regional agencies, authorities and other proponents. “Delta is entering a period of unprecedented change,” said Harvie. “Some enormously important decisions are going to be made about transportation, our port, industrial development, agricultural land, the environment and public infrastructure. Many of those decisions will not be made at Delta City Hall, but their impacts will be felt by the people who live here. “Our commitment is simple: if others are making decisions that affect Delta, Delta deserves a seat at the table.” Achieving says The Delta Future Forum will allow mayor and council to hear directly from residents and

Potential participants could include representatives from Delta’s business and agricultural communities, major employers, community associations, environmental organizations, transportation and logistics interests, labour organizations and residents from North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. “Before we speak for the community, we need to understand what the community is saying,” Harvie said. “That’s what we mean when we say listen at home and advocate at the table. We want to hear the concerns of Delta residents and then take those con-
cerns directly to the people making the decisions.” Achieving says that this initiative builds on their broader commitment to improve public engagement and become better listeners when residents raise concerns about development and changes affecting their neighbourhoods. “Public engagement needs to happen early enough for people’s input to actually matter,” Harvie said. “And listening is only meaningful if something happens with what we hear.” Among the issues the Delta Future Forum could examine are the impacts of the new Fraser River tunnel, Hwy. 99 and Hwy. 17 improvements, transit, Roberts Bank Terminal 2, port and industrial expansion, truck and rail traffic, ferry service, agricultural land pressures, environmental impacts and healthcare infrastructure. “Our responsibility is to make sure we understand both the benefits and the potential negative impacts and advocate for solutions that protect the qualities that make Delta unique,” he said. Harvie said the initiative ultimately creates a direct connection between community engagement and municipal advocacy. “Residents speak. Delta listens. Delta advocates,” he said. “Delta cannot control every decision made in Victoria, Ottawa or by regional authorities and other proponents, but we can make sure Delta isn’t standing on the sidelines while those decisions are being made.”

One Delta unveils first three pillars of strategic plan IAN JACQUES i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
One Delta has unveiled the first components of its blueprint designed to address both the immediate and longterm needs of residents. “One Delta is stepping forward with a plan rooted in real action,” said mayoral candidate Dylan Kruger in a news release. “It’s time for leadership that delivers tangible results for Delta, not slogans or studies. We have built a team that represents the entire community. We’re focused on doing the work, listening to residents and building a city that proactively plans ahead, instead of just reacting to crises.” On Sept. 10, One Delta released the first three pillars of its platform: • Affordability: A commitment to no new municipal taxes, levies, or fees. • Safe Neighbourhoods: Introducing 30 kmh speeds on residential roads and partnering with the school board on a safe routes to school program. • Attracting Investment: Establishing Delta’s first economic development office to support local businesses and

Safe neighbourhoods mean calming traffic on residential streets so children can walk or bike to school and play outside without fear.

And attracting investment means opening our first economic development office so local businesses can grow and create jobs, ensuring our city can plan for growth rather than falling behind.” The One Delta team - comprised of leaders from across Ladner, North Delta and Tsawwassen - believes Delta’s next municipal government must focus on three core responsibilities:
• Back-to-Basics Service Delivery: Fixing what’s broken, investing in essential services and ensure families receive the support the daily infrastructure support they rely on every day. • Building for the Next Generation: Delivering the infrastructure needed to move and grow Delta - ranging from health care and seniors care to transportation, economic development, and thoughtful long-term urban planning. • Accountability and Transparency: Establishing a city hall and mayor’s office that are accessible, financially responsible, open and entirely focused on serving residents. “We’ve spent months listening to residents on doorsteps, at community events and over coffee,” Kruger added. “The message was loud and clear: the status quo is no longer enough. Delta is going to grow and we actively need to lead that growth, not just watch it happen to us. Throughout this campaign, we will continue to roll out a comprehensive plan that delivers both immediate results and a clear long-term vision. It’s time to build Delta for now and for the future. It’s time for One Delta.”

Mayoral candidates urge caution over Facebook pages PHIL MELNYCHUK p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta’s mayoral candidates are expressing frustration over two local Facebook pages that are seemingly favouring one of the three hopefuls. Earlier in the summer, Delta Speak and I Love Delta posted more photos or mentions of Mayor George Harvie than the other two candidates, Dylan Kruger of One Delta and Melissa Granum of Delta First. However, in the last few weeks, there have been no posts about Delta politicians on either page, apart from one post on I love Delta about a school board candidate withdrawing from the election, and another with a photo of Granum and another post with a photo of school board chair Joe Muego. Harvie said he’s not aware of the pages, hasn’t seen the posts and is not involved with them, adding he’s busy enough with his campaign’s own social media campaign. “I have no idea who those groups are,” he said. “I have not looked at the posts. I have no control over those. I’m concentrating just on our own social media, which I’m very knowledgeable about, but I do not know who they are.” Harvie said he’ll have his social media manager look at them. Meanwhile, Kruger said he’s aware of the pages,
which he says are AI generated. “It’s concerning. This is the first municipal election … in the AI era. And to have all these AI social media platforms popping up, purporting to be news organizations, I think residents have to be concerned about the sources, where they’re getting their information,” he said. “It’s concerning for democracy and it’s concerning for the integrity of local news. This is about the integrity of our local democracy, journalistic ethics and standards and the spread of misinformation which is especially concerning if it comes from a foreign source.” Facebook data shows that I Love Delta initially was named Fanclub Yogi in 2018 but on Jan. 21 of this year, changed its name to I Love Delta. According to Facebook, India is the primary country for five of the people that manage the I Love Delta page while Canada is the primary country of only one of the managers. However, there’s no comparable information for Delta Speak. None of the pages are running ads. Granum said Meta should be responsible for ensuring that any information provided for a political campaign is accurate and not coming from another country. “It’s not OK if there is foreign interference in elections, regardless of what level of government it is,” she said. Elections BC says it’s received complaints about
the pages and reviewed them. “At this time, there is not an open investigation,” said Danielle Johnston, with Elections BC. Online communications on the internet that does not have a placement cost is generally not considered election advertising, she added. “But it depends on the specifics of each post so it’s hard to speak at a general level,” she said. The Local Elections Campaign Financing Regulation or the Local Election Campaign Financing Act governs election ads. Johnston said the Local Election Campaign Financing Act sets out rules regarding donations from non-citizens but issues of broader foreign interference are outside its jurisdiction. According to Elections BC guidelines, “third-party advertising is any public communication sponsored by someone other than a candidate or elector organization, that directly or indirectly promotes or opposes a candidate or an elector organization that is transmitted during the pre-campaign period or campaign period. “The value of third-party advertising includes not only the cost of sponsoring an advertisement but also the value of any property and services used in preparing the communication and transmitting it to the public.” Third-party advertisers must also register with Elections BC and must be independent from candidates.

OPINION
Shop local and support local Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES
I
n the Sept. 3 edition of the Optimist, we presented our annual A-List Readers Choice Awards. The section contained celebratory advertising from many of the winners and detailed the winners in a host of categories. All of these winners are local, small businesses that contribute to the overall success of the South Delta community. These businesses help drive the local economy, offer employment opportunities and also give back to the community by way of charity efforts and support to other non-profit organizations. Without small business our community would be lost. Supporting South Delta and Canadian small businesses matters now more than ever. With the Canada-U.S. trade war and tariffs taking effect on a range of Canadian goods and Canada in turn countering with its own tariffs, the business community is going to be faced with significant challenges. These tariffs and economic uncertainty means higher supply costs, expensive shipping and material costs. Many local and smaller businesses don’t have the margins to absorb those increases, so it’s important that we as consumers make choices to choose Canadian when we can. Shop from our local businesses. Support our local markets - like the weekend events at the Southlands and the Ladner Village Market. The last Market I attended on Aug. 23 was packed - a great sign and a great sign of support. Be sure to recommend local and shop local messaging that appears on your social media. Give them a like and share to help support their local messaging. In South Delta, continue to support homebased businesses too and all of our talented creators, entrepreneurs and of course, our local Delta farming community. We all, I’m sure, have our political viewpoints on this trade war and if Canada is doing the right thing when it comes to a trade deal with the U.S. But this doesn’t have to be “political.” This is simply thinking local, supporting local, supporting Canadian and supporting small business. In the end, that support and that kind of thinking helps us all.
We need some leadership on housing this election
I
’m having trouble understanding why, in the midst of a housing shortage that has not gone away, one of our municipal political parties is advocating to slow down the process of approving the building of homes, thereby increasing the cost to future homeowners. Why would a party decide that the mayor and council should be looking at individual housing applications, rather than letting professionallytrained staff facilitate decision-making through careful analysis and the provision of recommendations for or against approval? There are an extensive number of applications in the pipeline and looking at them individually would create chaos. How is council to review, understand and decide on several permit applications a week? Delta has done good work over the course of the past couple of years to abide by and work within provincial mandates and laws that have been designed to speed up the process of approving housing choice so that

people can find a home. Let’s also remember that the real estate development industry and all of the associated economic spinoffs are the largest contributors to B.C.’s GDP - by far. It’s also important to point out that 92 per cent of homebuilders in this industry are small businesses employing 20 or so people. These people are your neighbours, your sons and daughters and are the carpenters, plumbers and dry wallers that are trying to make a living to feed and house themselves. We hear a lot about the “rushing” of our current Official Community Plan (OCP), one that has not been changed in 40-odd
years and I guess the shock was just too much to bare for a small vocal component of our community. The comfortable complacency has been soothing I suppose. Our OCP correctly identifies that density should primarily be concentrated in urban centres and in major urban corridors. The provincial government has mandated guidelines that are designed to streamline and speed up housing approval - not slow it down. Pandering to a small component of the community to “character wash” is a short-sighted strategy. Contrasting with what local advocacy group DelPop notes as potential speedy paths to housing choice, we should be voting for innovation rather than relying on gentle density gatekeeping as sound housing policy. People who are hesitant to share their voice, or those who have faith in what the government is supposed to do for their housing needs, are looking for leadership. So where is it?

Community action needed on these police cameras Editor: Re: Police launching Public Safety Camera Program. Let me preface that I have deep respect for Delta police, their staff and team and the work they do. There is serious concern about the technology being deployed and that was sold to them. What is increasingly evident across North America is the indiscriminate use of ALPR cameras, which raises massive data privacy issues that demand public scrutiny. These systems involve private companies (such as Canadian Genetec and American FLOCK) that have been shown to collect and share their location and other personal data, often without full transparency regarding their policies. And concerns exist regarding how this data is managed, and potential exposure to foreign entities. This is not an extreme view. They have been shown to continuously have facial, and licence plate/vehicle recognition. Even if the police choose not to use one of those features, the private companies behind them are still collecting that data anyway. They have been shown to have poor security, as online journalists like Benn Jordan have been able to easily access their footage. Studies have found they do not help

Hundreds of towns and cities are now rejecting them for these reasons. I urge our community to demand immediate action: a halt to further deployment of this unjust surveillance tech. We need clear answers regarding which vendors are used, where the cameras are deployed, and the full details of privacy assessments and where data gets shared. Two new welcome posts made by artists from the Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) and the Musqueam Indian Band (MIB) were unveiled on Sept. 9 at the entrance of Delta’s city hall. Mayor, city councillors, police department members, public service representatives, and Indigenous neighbours gathered to celebrate the milestone. “Today is about more than the installation of two welcome posts. It’s about recognizing the history, the culture and the endearing presence of the Coast Salish peoples on these lands,” said Taylor Baker, TFN’S executive councillor on behalf of chief and council. “It is about acknowledging that our stories, our teachings and connections to this territory did not begin with the creation of these municipal boundaries and will continue into the future.” For generations, house posts have marked the addresses of families in traditional big houses, and welcome posts have greeted visitors, commemorated ancestors and affirmed relationships. “These remarkable poles are a powerful expression of culture, welcome, respect, connection, and our ongoing commitment to reconciliation,” said Mayor George Harvie. Tsawwassen members Bryce Williams and Karl Morgan carved the colourful pole, while Musqueam Indian Band member Thomas Cannell created the metallic one. Williams explained that his welcome post features a male figure with an outstretched hand in greeting, clutching a salmon. The figure stands
atop flowing water, surrounded by more salmon. He shared that elders and ancestors said the rivers were once so abundant with salmon that you could walk across them at certain points. The figure wears traditional regalia, including a trade bead necklace with a tooth and a woven wool headband. Atop the post sits an eagle, symbolizing Tsawwassen, looking out in its direction while the house post itself faces the river. Williams noted the deep connection his people have to both the river and the ocean, adding that the pole was painted with acrylic, based on his design, with help from Carl Morgan and his wife. “It’s an honour to represent my community in this moment in our shared history. It’s a major step in terms of relationship building and acknowledging Tsawwassen’s connections to the lands and waters that surround us,” said the artist. Cannell describes that the Musqueam pole features a woman pointing her hands up in a gesture of gratitude, appreciation, and welcome. She wears a cedar dress, symbolizing the great forest that once stood, and is held up by cedar, representing the enduring strength of the trees. On top of her head is a rain cap, reflecting the traditional hats worn in the region. The artist is currently exploring mixed media and modern materials focused on longevity and durability, choosing to craft most of his piece in aluminum. “That’s a symbol of the long and enduring power and legacy that these artworks can have,” said Cannell.

Cops for Cancer fundraising rolls into Delta PHIL MELNYCHUK p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta Consts. Blair Tanino and Raymond Lam are riding in Tour de Valley.
Cool, dry weather provided perfect conditions for police peddling the cause of the Canadian Cancer Society on Monday. Riders rolled into the Delta Police Department headquarters on the first day of the Cops for Cancer six-day Tour de Valley. RCMP and city police from around the Fraser Valley started the 500-kilometre-plus ride at Surrey Police Service before stopping for lunch in Delta then winding up the day in Langley. This year, Delta police have two officers in the ride, which helps fund cancer research, while also supporting programs such as Camp Goodtimes. Delta Const. Blair Tanino said earlier he was riding in memory of this mom who died last year from pancreatic cancer. In a short speech, he said that visiting Ronald McDonald House and Camp Goodtimes were two highlights of the event so far and that after meeting the families at Ronald McDonald House he
could see how exhausted the parents were after spending all day in hospital. Delta Const. Raymond Lam’s mom is also a cancer survivor. Lam said they’ve been training all year for the event. Delta Police Chief Harj Sidhu said the ride and the fundraising officers do, all make a difference, while Insp. Gwen Vaughan-Smith, having been on the ride previously, said participants will find the event emotional. “You are going to be tired. You are going to be sore. You are going to be cold, especially with all the stop-andgoes, but always remember who you’re doing this for, that is the children. “Ride safe, rubber side down and thank you for making a difference.” The Tour de Valley finishes in Harrison Hot Springs on Sept. 19. This year’s fundraising goal for the Tour de Valley is $285,000. The riders are accompanied by a heavy police car and motorcycle escort. A rider died in the summer of 2025 after being hit by a vehicle while training for the Tour de North in Prince George.

Del-POP wants Delta election candidates to talk housing SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A Delta residents group is once again hoping to encourage conversations this municipal election on the type of housing developments they would like to see evolve in neighbourhoods. A non-profit society, Deltans for People-Oriented Places (Del-POP) says it is a volunteer-led pro-housing community group asking candidates to build on housing and land-use changes now opening the door to gradual neighbourhood-level growth. Noting his group is not connected with the real estate or development industries, co-founder Norman Van Eeden Petersman explained they would like to see, among other changes, allowing small multiplexes, rowhomes, secondary suites and other forms of incremental housing to actually be feasible to build. He said neighbourhoods have seen little in the way of change for so long, except for like-for-like replacements, but more options are needed to bring families back to neighbourhoods.
Wanting to provide candidates with information, Del-POP is hoping to have candidates outline their ideas for the types of new housing seen as preferable in their neighbourhoods, but the group will not be endorsing any candidates or outlining their positions on-line. The group, however, will outline what it says is an “ideal candidate profile” on what they hope candidates will champion, including small-scale housing, better transit, safer streets and more complete neighbourhoods. The group notes that public discourse around housing can sometimes make it appear that there is overwhelming opposition to even small-scale projects. However, many welcome change and, if done well, Delta’s new Official Community Plan can create a path where existing neighbourhoods can gradually make room for more families. Del-POP is inviting residents and candidates to its Homes to Call Home Walking Tour on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Check delpop.ca for details.

Step back in time with Delta Stageworks On Sunday, Sept. 27, Delta Stageworks Theatre invites audiences to experience Kirkland House, A Living History Tour, an immersive theatrical experience that brings Delta’s early history vividly to life inside the beautifully restored Kirkland House on Arthur Drive in Ladner. With the support of the Kirkland House Foundation and community business sponsors, the popular 2025 site-specific arts & heritage presentation returns this fall with a unique way to discover the stories, people, and places that helped shape the Delta farming community. At the heart of the experience is a one-hour guided journey through Kirkland House, where six actors portray members of the Kirkland family and a Chinese-Canadian farmworker
from the 1870s through the 1930s. The stories they tell are inspired by archival research and historical records from the Delta Archives. “History comes alive when we connect with the stories of people who lived then,” said artistic director Peg Christopherson, the project’s co-writer. “Hearing stories of the people who lived in the house and farmed the land, gives you an emotional connection with Delta’s past and a new understanding of the community we live in now.” The presentation features Delta artists Renee Iaci, Eric Smith, Avery Hansen, Nick Keenleyside and Taka Lee. Co-writers include Marilyn Norry and Taka Lee. Costume design is by Alex Godlewski. Contributing to the BC Culture Days
launch events hosted by the City of Delta happening on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Hawthorne Grove Park, the company is offering a free Backstage Rehearsal preview of the presentation, giving the public an opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at rehearsals, meet members of the creative team, and learn how they transformed archival and family research into an immersive theatre experience. Kirkland House volunteers will also be on hand at both event days to help audiences explore the historic house and grounds. Advance registration for the free Sept. 20 Culture Days event and tickets to the full presentation on Sept. 27 are available through the Delta Stageworks Theatre website deltastageworks.ca. -Submitted

Her work focuses heavily on B.C. landscapes, capturing the textures of nature inspired by her travels to places

In an era where artificial intelligence can generate images in seconds, the artist emphasized the irreplaceable value of traditional painting and observing the outdoors. “It’s really about the creative process, I think,” she said. “I like painting outside, looking at nature and painting what I see.” The weekend features various mediums including painting, pottery, and jewelry. Ladner-based companies, Ideal Door Ltd., Millenium Pacific Greenhouse and Fortis BC are sponsoring the event open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beside Eastlink (Delta Cable) at 5381 Ladner Trunk Road in Ladner. A donation of $15 per banker’s box of paper dropped off for secure shredding on the spot in Ladner site will help with food security for those who need a hand up. Any individual, company or

Community God’s outside work begins on the inside Our church is presently studying the New Testament book of James, a letter written to the early, dispersed church. It has fascinated me to observe that these early Christians were faithful enough to be identified as Christ-followers, enduring much outward persecution, yet still evidenced much inward conflict. This epistle is renowned for its instruction on ‘practical Christian living’, and many assume it provides repetitive instruction for how to live a good Christian life outwardly. And it does: James puts professing believers to the test through several scenarios such as Godly wisdom versus worldly wisdom, and how to treat the rich and poor alike. He contrasts the dif-

ference between hearing the Word versus doing what it says. He warns about the dangers of the tongue, as well as how to endure suffering. Yet after preaching over a dozen sermons, it is abundantly clear: nothing can be accomplished for Christ’s mission on the outside, until full submission
to Christ’s mission first occurs on the inside. Until God moves on the inside, in the heart of a sinner, all these good, outward habits are simply rearranging the furniture on the Titanic, for none of these good works can save a person. Only faith in Jesus Christ, and His accomplished work on the cross, affords the sinner now become saint: salvation. He died to pay the penalty of your sin, so you’d receive forgiveness, mercy, grace and abundant life. And with salvation comes the indwelling Holy Spirit, who alone can equip the Christian to live all these kingdom-focused habits in a way that honours God, inside and out. He changed me, inside-out, and can change you too. I implore you, come to Jesus!

More Than a Facial: Discover the Beach Grove Laser Signature Medical Facial
If your skin is looking dull, tired, or a little grey after a summer of sun, heat, sunscreen, and outdoor activities, it may be time for more than your usual facial. At Beach Grove Laser Clinic, our Signature Medical Facial combines advanced skin technology, medical-grade skincare, and relaxation to give your skin the reset it deserves. What makes a medical facial different? Unlike a traditional facial that focuses primarily on pampering and surface cleansing, our Signature Medical Facial is designed to actively treat and refresh the skin. The treatment begins with Venus Glow deep cleansing, using advanced technology to gently exfoliate and remove accumulated dead skin cells, impurities, and debris. And yes—you can actually see what has been removed from your skin in the collection jar afterward. It is one of the reasons clients are often amazed by how thoroughly their skin has been cleansed. But we don’t stop there. We combine Venus Glow with the renowned Fire & Ice Facial, a medical-grade resurfacing treatment designed to further refine and rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. By combining deep cleansing and exfoliation with professional-grade skincare, our Signature Medical Facial goes beyond simply making your skin feel good—it is designed to leave it looking noticeably fresher, smoother, brighter, and more radiant. At Beach Grove Laser, we also believe effective skincare can still feel like a treat. Your hour-long Signature Medical Facial includes a relaxing face and shoulder massage, allowing you to unwind while giving your skin some much-needed attention. It is the best of both worlds: results-driven skincare with the relaxation of a beautiful facial experience. Our Beach Grove Laser Signature Medical Facial is regularly $210 and is currently available for $190. If summer has left your complexion looking dull or your skin simply needs its glow back, this may be the perfect time to experience why we call this our Signature Facial.

Only thirteen days left for the Stinky Sneaker Sale at The Runinn!
Once upon a time, Kevin Ridley, owner of the Runinn in Tsawwassen was dreaming of creating a partnership with a downtown Vancouver east side shelter. Building partnerships and relationships with Community is something that has been very important to the Runinn since its inception 30 years ago. We wondered how we might build on a partnership and the Stinky Sneaker Sale idea was born. Ridley says, “I had a connection at a men’s shelter downtown and made contact to see if they might be interested in gently used, preowned good quality runners, and they were very excited to be able to help distribute them to their clients”. Every late August and through the month of September, customers of The Runinn are able to bring in their used shoes and get a deal on a new pair. Store Manager, Matt Johnston commented that “it is just a win-win situation for our clients as well as the recipients of the shoes on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. It feels really good to be a part of this”. Staff at the Runinn scrutinize the donated runners and carefully select those shoes that are not too worn to be shared and the shoes are then delivered. Others that are too well “loved” are recycled or discarded. This year will be the 35th Annual Stinky Sneaker Sale. Now is the time for a new pair of sale runners and to bring in your old ones for donation. Consider being a part of this partnership! Give the store a call at 604-943-4661 or drop by for more information. Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall #125-1315 56th Street 604-943-4661 • www.runinn.com

What should you do if your heating system won’t turn on this fall?
Start with the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to Heat and turn the temperature up. Replace the batteries if the low-battery indicator is on or the screen is blank. Kirby Reid Owner
If you have a furnace, check the filter. A plugged filter can cause problems. Finally, try a reset. Turn the power off at the switch or breaker for 30 seconds, then back on. If your furnace or boiler still isn’t running properly, don’t keep resetting it. Call 604-946-7778 and we’ll come have a look.
Hello, here’s some key things. 1. Get your labs up to date. Fall is a great time to check iron, B12, vitamin D, thyroid and other important markers. In clinic, we can order and review your labs and build a plan based on your results. 2. Check your metabolic health. Blood pressure, glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin and cholesterol markers can tell us where your health may be heading. In clinic, we can assess your metabolic health and create a practical nutrition and lifestyle plan. 3. Get your sleep and energy back on track. Poor sleep and persistent fatigue should not simply become your new normal. In clinic, we can investigate what may be contributing and create an individualized plan to improve sleep, energy and recovery. 4. Get your body moving well. Walking, strength and mobility are some of the best investments we can make in healthy aging. In clinic, acupuncture, Bowen, Energy, and osteopathic treatments can help with pain, stiffness, mobility and recovery. 5. Make prevention the goal. You do not have to wait until something is wrong to start taking better care of your health. Come in for a Fall Tune Up and we can review your labs, nutrition, sleep, stress, movement and health goals together. Fall hugs, Dr. Heli McPhie

Why Your Child Should See an Orthodontist at Age 7?
Before you panic, there are a few things you can check yourself.
Check the furnace or boiler power switch. Many Ladner and Tsawwassen homes have one on the wall outside the mechanical room. It looks like a light switch but is mounted higher.
604-279-9151
Dear Dr. McPhie, what can I do this fall to stay as healthy as I can through this winter?
What is pre-payment and what does my mortgage offer? A pre-payment is an extra amount that the lender will allow you to pay onto your principal without penalty. The amount you can pay and when you are allowed to pre pay varies from lender to lender. Some lenders will allow only one time a year while others may allow you to put lump sums onto your principal at any time during the year. The amount of pre payments generally range from 10% - 20% of your original or outstanding mortgage amount.

Parents are often surprised when I recommend an orthodontic checkup at age 7. Yet this is the ideal time for a child’s first complimentary assessment. With both baby and permanent teeth present, I can evaluate how the bite, jaws, and smile are developing. As an orthodontist, I look for early signs such as crowding, early loss of baby teeth, crossbites, overbites, thumb sucking, and jaw growth patterns. Detecting concerns early allows us to guide development in a positive direction. Airway issues—such as nasal congestion, snoring, clenching, or grinding—can also be identified, supporting healthier growth, better sleep, and more ideal facial development. Even if your child already sees a general dentist, it is equally important to have a specialist evaluate growth by age 7. No referral is needed, and parents can schedule directly with our office for this complimentary consultation. At Tsawwassen Orthodontics, our assessments are gentle and encouraging, giving families peace of mind. Many children benefit from early monitoring, and often the best outcome is reassurance that growth is on track. Parents leave confident about their child’s dental future. A confident, healthy smile begins earlier than you may think. Call Tsawwassen Orthodontics at 604-232-3052 today to book your child’s complimentary screening. Have a question about orthodontics? Send it in, and we may feature it in a future Ask the Expert column!

Are older Canadian banknotes worth much money? For almost all Canadian banknotes from 1969 to date, only uncirculated notes have a chance to be worth more than face value. All used bills, they need to be deposited into the bank. Last week I did the monthly cash deposit and I found out that the Bank of Canada has changed the rules on older banknotes. We were unable to directly deposit them but had to fill out forms to send the Bank of Canada with the notes. Payment to us would be after the bank receives them. I believe this is the beginning of demonetizing the older notes like most other countries in the world is already doing.

Absolutely! Accompanying a family member or close friend to a hearing test can be helpful for a number of reasons: 1. Your presence provides a sense of support and comfort in an unfamiliar situation.

2. You can provide valuable insight concerning your loved one’s hearing loss. For instance, you’ll likely know what they can and cannot hear. You may know at what distance they stop hearing you. You may understand which communication and sounds they are missing. All of this helps us understand what their hearing loss is like in different situations. Your perspective and observations are incredibly useful. 3. Family members can be important in decision-making because they understand the physical, financial, and social aspects of home life.

After coming over to the Vancouver Giants from the Kelowna Rockets at last year’s Western Hockey League (WHL) trade deadline, Ladner’s Will Sharpe has chosen a different path for the 2026/27 hockey season. In late July, Sharpe, a 19-year-old, 6-1 defenceman, decided to pursue an opportunity with the St. Cloud State University Huskies in Minnesota. The seventh round pick, (216th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2025 NHL draft, Sharpe will be part of the freshman class for the Huskies when they open up their NCAA Div. 1 season on Oct. 3. The Huskies are a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and play at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Ladner Pioneers came home with a bronze medal from the 2026 President’s Cup Senior B lacrosse championship. Ladner beat the Newtown Golden Eagles 17-6 in the thirdplace game on Saturday, Sept. 5. In the round-robin, the Pioneers went 1-2 beating the Winnipeg Blizzard 12-6 and lost to the Edmonton Miners (125) and 11-10 in overtime to the Golden Eagles.
In the quarter final, the Pioneers beat the Six Nations Rivermen 16-12 to punch their ticket to the semifinal where they lost to the Snake Island Muskies 12-7. The host Miners beat the Golden Eagles 14-11 in the other semifinal and won the gold medal with a 12-4 win over the Muskies. Edmonton went undefeated at the tournament. “It was a well-run tournament. Edmonton did a great job. The venue was awesome … really a treat to play out of,” said Pioneers president John Burr. “We hadn’t played in three weeks, so we opened up tough against Edmonton. We really never had our legs in that game. But I thought after that we started to pick it up and we started to play better.” Burr said the bronze medal is great and he is proud of the whole

They then went undefeated in the playoffs winning 3-0 over Nanaimo in the semifinal and beating North Shore 3-0 for the provincial title. “We had a great season,” he said. “I’m very proud of our team. REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES
Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Albert was 1 of 11 children. He moved to Vancouver in his early 20s and married Linda Jean Sokalofsky, his wife of 65 years. Albert was a resident of Boundary Bay from 1968 to 2026. He is survived by his wife, Linda Jean Sokalofsky, daughter, Robin Richings (Barry), son, Randy Sokalofsky, daughter, April Teichgraber (Brian), and grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Megan, Miranda, Daniel, Brendan, Kieran, Ryan, Tate, and Eli. Albert poured years of hard work into his tire store, routinely working long hours to build the business from the ground up. Remarkably, his tireless work ethic extended far beyond his storefront. During his early years, Albert was a dedicated community and church volunteer who found great joy in giving back. Among his favourite memories were organizing sports days at Boundary Beach Elementary and Boundary Bay Elementary schools, umpiring local fast-pitch games, and driving the bus for Bible School. He also deeply enjoyed teaching Bible School, supporting the Bible Call program at Oakridge Church of Christ, and serving as camp director at Spruston Road Bible Camp, alongside countless other acts of service. He was a die-hard fan of the Vancouver Canucks and was always ready to debate anyone brave enough to suggest he turn the game off. Albert lived his life for his family and his faith in God. He deeply cherished his church family at Delta Church of Christ.
We are saddened to share that Sherry passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, Sherry is survived by her brother Earl, son Roger, granddaughters Jenny-Lyn and Jessica, and greatgrandson James. Up until her final days, Sherry was a sophisticated, fashionable, calm, and loving woman. She loved travelling, spending time with friends, a good glass of wine, and murder mysteries. She was the life of her community and a frequent patron of the library. She had a genuine desire to connect with the people in her life and enjoy their company.
William David “Dave” Williams, 72, passed away suddenly but peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 12th, 2026. Dave is survived by his wife, Colleen Hill; daughter, Christiane Paplinski (Chris); mother, Carole; sister, Susan Garret (Paul); sister, Linda Hunter (Bruce); sister-in-law, Diana Bridgen (Jim); brother-in-law, Brad Hill; nephews, great-nieces, and greatnephews. A celebration of life will be held at Tsawwassen Springs on Sunday, October 4th, 2026, from 12- 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dave’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Sherry will be remembered as a sister, mother, Nana, Gigi, and friend.
