Welcome to our annual Readers’ Choice Awards! These awards are always a highlight of our year at the Optimist.

As you may recall, we published ballots in print and online throughout the summer.

You, our loyal readers, cast your votes, recognizing the best businesses, restaurants, people and places in South Delta.

This year we had hundreds of voters and over 12,500 individual votes to tally.

While our contest may not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation from our community does lend credibility to the outcome, as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify ballots. Each ballot must have contained a minimum number of categories voted on – and only one ballot per person was accepted.

Tell us what keeps you in South Delta?

Tell us what brought you to South Delta?

Being born and raised in South Delta, I feel very fortunate to be able to live and work in this community. By far, the friendly and supportive nature of the South Delta community is what keeps me here. The involvement of the people in community events and initiatives, the willingness to support local businesses and nonprofits, and the welcoming energy you feel as you walk through town are the characteristics that I am proud of and hope will continue for many years to come.

Both my wife and I grew up in smaller towns and we were looking for somewhere in the Lower Mainland where we could capture a similar feel for our kids and ourselves.

I was already working for the Delta Fire Department, so I just kept driving my wife out to visit South Delta on weekends until she agreed to move there from Vancouver in 2004. We have lived here ever since.

Tell us about your role with the LBA and now the Chamber of Commerce?

After many years of volunteering with the Ladner Business Association (LBA) for various events and initiatives, I joined the board of directors in 2012 and became LBA president in 2017. In the coming weeks, I will be moving to the Delta Chamber of Commerce as the executive director where I look forward to building further relationships with the business communities of Tilbury, Annacis Island, North Delta, Tsawwassen and the TFN. In this new role, I will take an active role in promoting the growth and prosperity of local business through advocacy, networking, educational opportunities and connections. By working together, with our members, partners and affiliates, the Delta Chamber of Commerce will continue to build on the successes of businesses within Delta.

What is your favourite aspect of South Delta?

The supportive nature of our community and the people who make up the community.

There is a rich blend of history, stories, perspectives and visions for the future. We have seen this community come together to support one another and when we work together it demonstrates the incredible strength this community has.

How long have you been with Delta Fire?

What is your favourite aspect of South Delta?

I appreciate a lot of aspects of South Delta but my favourites are likely the sense of community here, and the natural beauty and many outdoor recreation opportunities.

What makes the South Delta community unique?

The distinct character of the two South Delta communities, with their coastal and river attributes, combined with North Delta and Tsawwassen First Nation close by, with agricultural areas and Burns Bog in between, and the City of Vancouver a short drive away together make our City quite unique.

Any words of wisdom?

Respect and be kind to your neighbours and community, particularly during these challenging times. And as the fire Chief I of course want to remind everyone that smoke alarms save lives. Please make sure you have smoke alarms in your home and that the batteries are changed twice a year.

Tell about how you came to South Delta?

Delta Police Inspector | Head of Frontline Patrol

I have lived in South Delta since 1970 when my family moved here from Ontario. I grew up in Ladner, attended elementary and high school, played minor baseball and hockey, and volunteered in Delta. I liked what South Delta had to offer, and chose to remain.

How long have you been with Delta Police?

I’ve been a police officer for the Delta Police for the past 26 years. I’m currently the Officer in Charge of the Patrol Services Section. If you’re a Delta resident and have an interest in policing as a career, we’re hiring, check out joindpd.ca!

What is your favourite aspect of South Delta?

It’s a fantastic city to live, play and work in, and offers a great balance for people lucky enough to live here.

What makes the South Delta community unique?

South Delta still has a small town feel and strong sense of community despite its close proximity to Vancouver. I’ve found when people grow up in South Delta, they may move away for a period of time, but they seem to return here to raise their families.

Any words of wisdom?

Delta is literally one of the safest communities in Metro Vancouver, or for that matter in B.C. We have occasional issues with prolific offenders, and violent crime but as long as you take standard precautions, like locking your doors, not leaving valuables in your car, you shouldn’t have too many problems. If you do have problems, the Delta Police are here to help.

I am a life-long Ladner resident. I moved away for periods of time but was always drawn back to Delta. My husband and I are happy to be raising our two kids in Ladner.

How long have you been with the Delta Hospital and Communtiy Health Foundation?

I have been with Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation since 2012 and in the Executive Director role since 2016. It is an honour to lead a small but mighty team who are passionate about our hospital and community.

What is your favourite aspect of South Delta?

South Delta is an awesome community that still has small town charm even though it is so close to the city. My favourite part of our community is how our residents and businesses continually give back – true philanthropic spirit.

What makes the South Delta community unique?

The people – definitely the people. Over the years I have come to truly appreciate our community’s sense of pride and passion for those things that are important to them.

I feel a great sense of calm knowing that our community is so committed to one another’s well-being.

Any words of wisdom?

Not a single day goes by that I don’t find myself feeling lucky to live here. I think we all need to remember how fortunate we are and embrace others regardless of their beliefs, race or gender. Our community is evolving and I believe the changes are providing us with an even richer and more vibrant community to call home.

What makes the South Delta community unique?

While Delta is within commuting distance of a big city, there is a moment when everything changes as you come out of the tunnel and start driving through the farmland or along the Fraser River. The clouds may lighten, the rain may stop and you can feel like you have been transported a hundred miles away. We see the snow geese resting in the fields, farmers planting their crops, a fishing trawler heading west on the river and multiple generations of families coming together to support each other.
