Police Chief outlines port policing solutions SANDOR GYARMATI

s g ya rm a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Perhaps a small fee for every container can go a long way in addressing the major security concerns at Deltaport. That was one of the options put forward by Police Chief Neil Dubord at a recent presentation on a report by Peter German & Associates, highlighting serious issues from the lack of a dedicated police force at Deltaport and other port facilities. The report was recently released by the City of Delta and Delta Police and outlines concerns since the disbandment of the Ports Canada Police in 1997 as well as subsequent responsibility for port security fragmented among various entities. At the Oct. 19 police board meeting, Dubord talked about the potential next steps in advocating for a solution and the law enforcement options outlined in the report. “On a higher level, there’s two different models that might be available. I don’t think there’s support for separate ports police again, another police department within the Lower Mainland that might manage the port. But I think there was some support for a model, whether it would be general duty patrol, which would be done by either the City of Vancouver or City of Delta, and then there would be an investigative ele-

Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord said employees at YVR must undergo security checks but many who work at the port don’t face such a requirement.

ment as well,” explained Dubord. Noting about 30,000 people enter the port on a regular basis, of which only 7,000 are security-cleared, Dubord said clearance is an issue that needs to be addressed. Another option, he said, is filling an investigative element at Federal Serious and Organized Crime (FSOC) in British Columbia (E Division), which works closely with international, national and municipal police. “The idea would be that you could fence the funding so that if you had 12 seats or 20 seats, they would all be looked after. They would be filled, so they wouldn’t be pulled to other duties, other demands that there are operationally from the RCMP side,” he said. Dubord also noted that an idea for funding put forward by Mayor George Harvie is a $10 surcharge for each container, which would be a “safety surcharge” applied on top of existing container fees. “A $10 surcharge is very small. That’s the price of a latte, almost. That money would be dedicated to a security team that would be able to police the ports, both on the general duty side and beefing up the investigative side as well,” he added. Asked by the board if there has been any response, so far, from the federal level, Dubord said, “At this time there has been no response. So, it’s unfortunately fallen on deaf ears.”

This unique store transports you to the glamorous 1940s, 50s, and 60s, with a modern twist

MCM Avenue gives customers a new look at an age old vibe to compliment modern homes Mike Azevedo has created a “time machine” in Tsawwassen. No, not quite the type envisioned by many science fiction writers and dreamers. Think of it more like a place where you can take a trip back to a time and place where home decor colours were vibrant, design was flamboyant, and living was highlighted by glamour.

The “time machine” in question is called MCM Avenue.

Opened in mid-October - MCM stands for Midcentury Modern - MCM Avenue has drawn a steady stream of customers who have been delighted with the array of books, art, small sculptures, and childrens’ toys displayed inside. “Customers feel like they are in a museum and enjoy a trip down memory lane when they come in,” says Azevedo, adding the in-store music also helps sets the stylish, throwback vibe with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and more providing the soundtrack. “The 1940s, 50s and 60s had such style, and not just with homes, but fashion too,” Azevedo says. “There was just this presence that was all about glamour. Azevedo and his husband opted to leave from their residence in Yaletown and seek a more “homey” community to provide a nurturing environment for their twin boys. Their final choice led them to move to the Tsawwassen. There, they noticed that the local community’s shared enthusiasm for midcentury design. “That’s what started the whole bug about me

starting my own business,” says Azevedo, who previously had a local acting career. “As an actor, I’ve always had that creative side and an outgoing personality. And when I saw there was a lot of interest in midcentury style in this town, I decided, well—let’s tap into it.” So, they embarked on finding a storefront to showcase the all new, unused and reproduction goods they source from suppliers, most of whom come from Europe. “I had this five-year dream to make it happen. But it wasn’t until April of this year that a retail space became available. “And I couldn’t say no,” Azevedo says. After spending six months to get the space, located beside Mario’s Kitchen (1131 56th Street), ready, then sourcing inventory, the store opened in mid-October. “I wanted to begin with home decor from that era, then add vintage toys for kids, and classic books.” There’s also unique puzzles, greeting cards, and a whole section dedicated to men’s apothecary. “There’s a lot of beards in this town and they all want to look good,” Azevedo adds. Much of the inspiration for the product lines came from the annual Palm Springs Modernism Week that showcases fashion and design from that era. “That really was a different time and place,” Azevedo says. “Kids would just sit around their record player and listen to vinyls. There was no Netflix or Internet. “And customers come in here and just feel happy.” The task to set up the store has been a challenge, but a satisfying one. “It’s been a lot of work, and a lot of fun,” Azevedo says. “My husband and I are just so obsessed with this era and all it has to offer.”

Future plans are to branch out into offering a home staging service and adding larger pieces of midcentury-inspired furniture. MCM Avenue is open Thursdays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, shopping can be done by appointment from Monday to Wednesday as well. For more, check out their website, mcmavenue.com. MCM Avenue is your destination for a trip back in time for the glamorous designs and vibes of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Come and enjoy a different time and place with an array of gifts, art pieces and toys that tell the story of midcentury living.

Plea for patience and a safer Alex Fraser Bridge PHIL MELNYCHUK

P M e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Editor’s note: The following story deals with the sensitive issue of suicide. Reader discretion is advised. For those in distress, please go to https://crisiscentre.bc.ca/ or call: 1-800784-2433. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord has again appealed to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, following another tragedy last week on the Alex Fraser Bridge. Dubord asked that suicideprevention barriers be installed on the bridge, “for community safety and well-being,” and while he recognizes that may be difficult, he also hopes that advancements in technology could offer other solutions. Police responded to a person in crisis on the bridge on Monday, Oct. 23. “Despite the immediate response and deescalation efforts of our team, the situation ended tragically,” police said. Afterwards, Dubord asked the public for compassion, patience, respect and understanding during such incidents

Delta Mayor and police board chair George Harvie wrote the ministry asking to improve safety on the Alex Fraser Bridge. and not to take or share photos and videos. Delta mayor and police board chair George Harvie also wrote the ministry in February about the bridge. However, anti-suicide barriers cannot be installed because the extra weight of a tall fence and the change in aerodynamics would affect its stability, the ministry explained later. “. . . any additional barrier or fencing would create stress on

the structure –- both in weight and aerodynamics -- that could impact the stability of the bridge,” the ministry said in September. As well, highly visible emergency call boxes, with 24/7 access to operators, have been installed on the Alex Fraser, as well as on the Port Mann, Lions Gate and Ironworkers Memorial bridges, the ministry added. Pedestrian activity also can

be monitored on the bridges, through the ministry’s transportation management centre. Harvie’s letter followed a Jan. 23 incident involving a man in distress on the bridge. Traffic was stalled for hours until a man surrendered safely at about 8 p.m. “As mayor and chair of the police board, I’m going to continue to try do something in so far as reducing … the tragic loss of life. I just don’t like to see one there,” Harvie said in an interview with the Optimist on Sept. 15. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming acknowledged the Jan. 23 incident in his reply to Harvie in June, thanking Delta police and saying such incidents are traumatic for those involved. “I am deeply saddened by the number of lives lost at this crossing between 2020 and 2022, and the number of distress calls that were received in that period,” Fleming said. He added that installing conventional barriers on the Alex Fraser is not possible based on engineering analyses, adding that staff are looking at other options.

The transportation ministry said its suicide prevention efforts have a “particular focus” on major bridges in Metro Vancouver with high pedestrian traffic. Safety barriers will be considered in all new projects, said the ministry, noting the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge has three-metre high barriers. Delta police spokesperson Acting/Insp. James Sandberg, said previously, that there have been six confirmed suicides from the Alex Fraser in the three-year period between Jan. 1, 2020 and Dec. 31, 2022. However, the number of reported sudden deaths from the bridge is likely low because it represents only those incidents that were witnessed, while bodies that are found away from the bridge are connected to the location where they were found. Police received a total of 88 calls connected to the Alex Fraser in the three years between 2020 and 2022. But 40 of those calls were unfounded while 28 calls ended with apprehensions under the Mental Health Act.

Stop work order issued after rocks dumped over Boundary Bay seawall SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The City of Delta has issued a stop work order on a single-detached house under construction at 126 Centennial Parkway after a large pile of rocks and boulders was deposited over the fronting seawall. Nearby residents raised the alarm about the rocks being dumped on to the beach as a previous house on the site was being demolished. According to Delta’s planning department, the city issued a permit to construct the new house this September.

In conjunction with the building permit, an additional permit was issued for repair works to the existing seawall, which was limited to manual repairs of cracks in the seawall and, if needed, access through the beach by foot. No modifications to the foreshore were permitted without the Department of Fisheries and Oceans approval, but in October, the city received a complaint about rocks deposited on the property’s beach side. The city then posted a stop-work order for works contravening the building permit. The

planning department notes the city is currently working with the DFO to receive approvals for the rock material to be removed from the federal seaside land. The stop work order remains posted, with no further works permitted other than removing the rocks from the beach under DFO approval, once that is received. BC Assessment has the address, which had a house built in 1979 on a 9,000-square-foot lot, having an assessed value of $3,392 million, as of July 1, 2022. The land was assessed at $2,919,000.

Cyclists will have easy ride in new Fraser River tunnel PHIL MELNYCHUK

pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com

Cyclists and pedestrians will have a comfortable ride and walk once the new Fraser River tunnel is complete in 2030. The $4.1-billion project will have a walking and cycling corridor that runs down the middle and which is separated by concrete walls from road to ceiling, with its own ventilation system. “That part is great because we’re going to have a nice, safe, easy trip through the tunnel in either direction,” said Neil Pope, co-chair of the TFN-Delta committee with HUB Cycling. “From the cycling community’s standpoint, from HUB’s standpoint, we’re very happy with that part of the tunnel design.” Pope, says while his group likes the overall design of the tunnel, it also supports Delta’s request for a second exit or overpass out of the tunnel on to River Road and into Ladner. The group wrote a letter to the Fraser River tunnel project team noting that the original project included an overpass.

Tunnel is supposed to be built by 2030.

Cyclists as well as motorists would benefit, he added. Pope adds that an overpass at River Road would help cyclists travelling to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal and to work in Tilbury, Ladner and Richmond. Pope pointed out that few people know what the cycling lane in the new tunnel actually looks like. “They have no idea. “We’re really happy with that aspect of the design,” he said pointing out the tunnel will have a slope of six per cent, the same as the grade on the Alex Fraser Bridge. For those on e-bikes, that’s not an issue, he added. His group, HUB Cycle, though is worried about the temporary closure of the Millennium Trail, during construction,

which would mean losing access beneath Hwy. 99 that currently allows cyclists to move from one side of the highway to the other. Constructing an overpass at River Road will make it easier for cyclists to access Ladner Village, he added. With more e-bikes and e-scooters on the road, it makes it more important for cities to build good cycling infrastructure, he added. “Now, we’ve got way more people cycling right, and it’s brought a whole new demographic to cycling that wasn’t there before,” Pope said. The pandemic also got more people on two wheels on to the road. “And they’re still out there. It hasn’t gone away.”

Tsawwassen entrepreneurs enter the Dragons’ Den MIKE SU

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i te r

A pair of Tsawwassen entrepreneurs were showcased on the Dragons’ Den recently. Jason Elliott and Marty Furse co-founded the company Perfectly Snug in November 2018, introducing their primary invention, The Smart Topper. On the Oct. 26 episode of the Dragons’ Den on CBC, the entrepreneurs introduced the product and ultimately got an offer. Perfectly Snug sought $400,000 -- in exchange for five per cent of the company, with a primary focus on advertising and expanding their networks. “The biggest challenge right now is fund-

ing. Customers love the product, and we’re getting sales faster than we can build them, so we need money to expand our capacity and fuel the growth,” Furse said. Perfectly Snug accepted an offer from “Dragon” Michele Romanow for 10 per cent of the company, but the deal has not been finalized yet. “We felt that the value of the company has been going up since that show, and her offer was well below our evaluation. So far, nothing has materialized,” Furse said. Their innovative bed cooling system is patented and consists of a two-inch layer placed on top of the mattress, with internal fans circulating air beneath it. Built-in sensors ensure automatic

temperature settings. “The idea started with me having trouble sleeping. I had struggled for years to get a good sleep, and I figured, I am an engineer, so I took the technical approach,”

Elliott said. “We found out many people have the same problem. We could help a lot of them by coming up with something like this.” Elliott initiated his sleep study by equipping

his bed with sensors. His research revealed that after 30 minutes in the same position, skin temperature would rise to match the core temperature, leading to discomfort and frequent tossing and turning to try to cool down. This ongoing movement significantly disrupted deep sleep, and led to kicking off blankets, which would lead to awakening due to coldness. After testing various prototypes, they successfully created a system that adapts to individual temperature preferences without adjusting to blankets or room temperatures. The company has an active online presence, with more than 2,000 people now sleeping on their products.

Delta wants more EV stations SANDOR GYARMATI

s g ya rm a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals to install more citysupplied electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The work involves installation of 21 public charging stations and 10 city fleet-charging stations. The sites across the city include, among others, the Kennedy Seniors’ Centre, the Douglas Husband Discovery Centre, the Winskill Park Fieldhouse, Diefenbaker Park and the Bridge Street at 48th Avenue parking lot. Delta this year received a $200,000 investment through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which includes $150,000 to support the installation of one EV fast charger and 20 Level 2 EV charging stations at public facilities, as well as $50,000 for 10 Level 2 EV chargers at three of Delta’s fleet facilities. In addition, the province is also contributing $25,000 for the fast charger under the CleanBC Go Electric Public Charger Program.

More EV charging stations planned.

Part of Delta’s Electric Vehicle Strategy, the new public stations are expected to be operational in late 2023. The city currently owns and operates about 30 Level 2 charging stations at civic facilities, but no Level 3 fast charge stations yet. Meanwhile, the provincial government last week announced that it is accelerating its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) targets and helping more people go electric with amendments to the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act.

nother tragic incident on the Alex Fraser Bridge has amplified the calls for additional safety measures.

Last week, a man committed suicide on the bridge, despite the efforts of Delta Police and other first responders. Police Chief Neil Dubord reaffirmed his appeals to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to install suicide prevention barriers on the bridge. Mayor George Harvie, who is also the chair of the Delta Police Board, has also been lobbying for the past few months on this issue. MOTI says, while they sympathize and are saddened by these incidents, the make up of the bridge and their engineering analyses have said that it is not possible to install these barriers. There are call boxes on the bridge where a person in distress can access to contact mental health support services, but let’s get real here…if a person is in such distress that they plan to jump do you really think that they will pick up a phone? Last week’s incident is the second highprofile mental health situation on the bridge this year. You might recall that in January, a person was in distress and on the bridge. Thankfully, after many hours, police resolved the situation and the man surrendered safely to police. But in both of these incidents, some members of the public used the circumstances to boost their social media followers by callously taking and posting videos, impeding police efforts and putting other first responders in harms’ way. Dubord is appealing to the public to show some compassion, respect and understanding during such incidents. I couldn’t agree more. According to police, 88 calls connected to the Alex Fraser Bridge were responded to between 2020 and 2022. Twenty-eight of those calls ended with Mental Health Act apprehensions. That’s 28 calls too many. We have to do better.

Buy local and support our growers

T

he British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture and Food website contains some very relevant resources that define the vision of the Agriculture and Food economy moving forward and has several welldefined programs to enhance and build upon this important sector that currently contributes more than $16 billion to our economy. “The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is responsible for the production, marketing, processing and merchandising of agriculture and seafood products, as well as supporting our province’s food security, and developing a resilient food system and economy.” Within the Ministry service plan are familiar programs such as “Buy B.C.” which is a simple enough concept. I think that most of us recognize the important correlation between buying local product and supporting our growers. Beyond Buy B.C. are lesser known programs that are worthy of our attention. For the

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

most part we typically take the food system for granted. Within the ministry’s mandate are programs designed to enhance innovation in food and beverage processing. In addition, Agri-tech innovation, climate change mitigation and strengthening B.C.’s food security and provincial food systems are all worthy and important goals. The Ministry also has partnerships with 20 post secondary institutions across B.C. where degree programs such as Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture are supported and

where the students work local farming operations and supply campuses with fresh produce. This element of “Feed B.C.” also ensures that local and regional institutions such as hospitals and care homes use local food in their commissaries. Mapping out agriculture and food security goals is tricky business given the variety of obstacles that present themselves to farmers and the food economy in general. Although there are several robust post secondary programs available in B.C. where students have opportunity to gain insight in how to participate in the food economy, there is no mention of education for K-12 students within the Ministry Service plan. It seems to me that if the post secondary programs are to gain strength, they need to garner interest amongst younger students at an earlier age. Point Roberts: we have yet to recover Editor: Visitors crossing the Point Roberts Border in September 2023 totalled 86,198 and crossing preCOVID pandemic in September 2019 was at 116,195 for a loss of 29,997 visits for that month. Consider if each visitor spends $20. That is a loss of $600,000 to our economy in that month and annualized it is about $7,200,000. This 20-month international border lockdown beginning March 2020 was a medically panic-induced reaction of governments and proved to be unnecessary and ineffective regard-

ing Point Roberts. It was a severe hardship on the community both in human and economic terms some of which we have not recovered from to this day. More harm was done to us by governments than by the Coronavirus. Further, several of us pointed out these possibilities at the time and further predicted that if this lockdown continued longer than six months, people’s habits would be altered vis a vis Point Roberts visitations. Guess what, to this day we have yet to recover. Governments did not take care of their own

here and I do not believe that they have learned anything from this grievous experience. Where is the plan, should they ever consider locking their public down again and place Point Roberts under house arrest? Are we to expect and accept another knee jerk panic response? Do we learn nothing from this travesty? We the public should reasonably expect that our elected people and staff should protect and serve us effectively. This is certainly not the case here in Point Roberts and no relief is evidenced to date. Brian Calder

Editor: Re: Port numbers are flawed (Optimist, letters, Oct. 26) It would seem likely to put two and two together - the Port of Vancouver fighting for years to expand Delta Port/Robert’s Bank (even though the numbers don’t support any container expansion) and now the talk of a cruise

ship terminal being considered for Tsawwassen. I can hear the argument now - if there are not the numbers for container traffic, then lets continue to build the terminal to support a cruise ship terminal.. Either way, together or not, what an environmental disaster for the oceans and sea life, farmland, bird flyway, community

living, highways and tunnel/traffic congestion. Thank you to Mr. Emsley and the Against Port Expansion Community Group for continuing to speak out against any expansion of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 and the protection of these sensitive, environmental lands and ocean in Delta. Heather Colls

Delta Farmers Institute getsadditionalfunding

XL

The Delta Farmers’ Institute (DFI) was one of the recent funding recipients of a government program aimed at ensuring healthy soils and ecosystems in agricultural communities. Funded by the governments of Canada and British Columbia, the Regional Extension Program is also aimed at helping reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and prepare for, and mitigate the impacts of, drought, wildfire, flooding and extreme temperatures. A news release notes the program funds activities such as, data sharing, on-farm demonstrations, workshops and webinars that highlight best practices and the latest research and technologies to support sustainable agriculture. There are 16 projects underway with more starting in the coming months. A key feature of the program, which provided $1.5 million in funding, is the use of local knowledge whereby ministry staff work directly with farmers to identify and develop projects that strengthen both climate resilience and food secu-

rity. Regional engagement sessions will be in November. The DFI received $80,500 to expand the salinity-monitoring network, measuring the salt in the water supply, develop a mobile app for producers to access the information from the network and provide a field day to help farmers with irrigation scheduling. “This program has allowed farmers to better manage their irrigation practices and overall operational system efficiencies. The comprehensive monitoring network will continue to improve our understanding of the timing of river flows and water quality as we adapt to changes in weather patterns. The real-time information not only helps farmers take direct action but provides valuable data on the fluctuations of the environment,” said DFI administrator Leisa Yee. Earlier this year, Delta Mayor George Harvie, said the farming community already has problems when it comes to salinity of the water from the Fraser River due salt wedge migration, as well as subsequent reduced flows.

Operation Christmas Child has started in South Delta. Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse has set out to distribute these many gift-filled shoeboxes to children living in desperate circumstances of war, poverty and disaster in more than 100 countries. In 2022, 415,072 giftfilled shoeboxes were packed across Canada. As 2023 has continued to be difficult, these children need hope now more than ever. Often these shoeboxes will be one of the first gifts that these children have ever received, filling them with great joy. People can use their own shoeboxes or pick up an Operation Christmas Child shoebox from South Delta Baptist Church (1988 56th Street in Tsawwassen). Boxes can also be picked up at Sure Copy

in Ladner (Harbourside Mall) as well as Dollar Store and More (Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall). This year Dollar Store and More will be able to help anyone wanting to fill their shoe boxes with the appropriate items. Just ask one of the many helpful staff. If you would like more information about this campaign, email Denise Johnston at: occ@southdelta.org or you can contact the organization directly by scanning the barcode in the picture above. Organizers encourage everyone to drop off during National Collection Week Nov. 12 to 19. Please contact South Delta Baptist Church at 604-943-8244 for other arrangements. -Submitted

Blackthorn performs this Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Ladner United Church.

Come and enjoy Vancouver’s premiere Celtic Band at the Sunday @3 Concert Series at Ladner United Church on Nov. 5. Blackthorn is a Canadian Celtic folk band that saw its inception back in 1989 with a group of musicians who found a common interest in a music that wasn’t all that common in Vancouver at the time. Early highlights included performing at Vancouver’s seminal

Celtica Festival in 1990 along with De Dannan and Andy M. Stewart and performing and recording with the World Champion SFU Pipe Band. Since then, the group has travelled a long road through the streets of traditional and contemporary Celtic music, performing concerts and at Celtic and Folk Festivals and Highland Games throughout Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

Blackthorn features four talented musicians, three of whom share lead vocals, bringing a refreshing diversity of character to the group’s polished sound and all four contribute a mastery of a colourful variety of instruments. The results of their collective musical backgrounds, skills and experience are witnessed in the high-calibre, entertaining performances they consistently deliver to audiences of all ages. Blackthorn’s extensive

repertoire is rooted in the musical traditions of Scotland and Ireland as well as the folk music of English and French Canada. Their repertoire has expanded to include creative original compositions that reflect the influences of these traditions. Tickets for the Ladner concert are $10 (cash at the door). WINDOW AND GUTTER CLEANING

Live Flamenco returns to Tsawwassen Friday night A special live flamenco show encore is set to return to Tsawwassen on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Equinox Theatre at South Delta Secondary. Bev Mantovani, owner, and principal performer of Los Gitanos Spanish School of Dance is inviting all South Delta residents and friends to join her group of talented musicians, singers, and dancers for a one-night event of “Zapatos Rojos.” “The event in June was an almost sold-out show,” said Mantovani. “After three years of not performing, the energy of the dancers and the audience were amazing. That’s why we are repeating the performance one final time. It takes much work and effort to present each of our shows. We normally perform for two nights in a row, therefore all of us were left wanting to present the show to our friends, family, and community for a second night.”

This magical story, set at a gypsy camp in Andalusia, tells the story of a woman who is willing to go to great lengths to retain the power and strength of her youth. She makes a pact with a sorcerer to enchant these red shoes to allow her to dance as she has never danced before, but the pact comes with a cost. “The story is dramatic and allows us to show a wide range of dances,” she said. “I am proud of my students as we can highlight their skills at all levels. We feature 30 students from ages eight to 86. Imagine this magnificent ensemble of local talent who show their love and dedication to this art form.” Doors open at 7 p.m. and show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 778-833-0447 or at eventbrite.ca/delta. -Submitted

JV Sun Devils seek fourth conference win IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Junior Varsity Sun Devils are poised for a playoff run – but first they have one more conference game to take care of. The Sun Devils took their 3-1 conference record (7-1 overall) into their game Wednesday night against Seaquam at John Oliver Field. Results were too late for Optimist press deadlines, so check out our website for coverage later this week. Last Thursday, South Delta picked up a big 40-20 win over Terry Fox, their second conference win in a row after edging Centennial 26-20 in overtime on Oct. 19. Their lone conference loss was to New Westminster who won 28-22 on Oct. 12. South Delta trailed 6-0 after the first quarter against Terry Fox, but responded with a pair of scores in the second quarter – both by Jarred Brown, who caught receptions of 22 yards and 58 yards from quarterback Damian Dumas. Zach Golab scored his second TD of the game for Terry Fox and the Sun Devils led 13-12 at the half.

In the third quarter, Quinn Sjoberg caught a pair of TD’s (four yards and 55 yards) from Dumas while Golab ripped off a 63-yard run for Terry Fox. South Delta led 26-20 after three. South Delta took over the game in the fourth quarter as Dumas ran in a score from two-yards out and Dylan Lappin had a 17-yard run to finish the scoring. Dumas finished with 353 yards passing with four TDs. He also rushed for 100 yards and a score. Sjoberg caught eight receptions for 169 yards and two scores while Brown finished with 140 yards receiving and two scores. Head coach Scott Martens said he is pleased with the teams’ performances the past few weeks. “We’ve played pretty well. We made an adjustment at quarterback where we moved Damian into that role,” he said. “That move has benefited our passing and running game. Terry Fox tried to stack the box on us and we turned to the passing game over the run and we executed very well. “We took control in the second half, but it was closer than we expected

playoff seed. “We are guaranteed second place in our conference and if St. Thomas More beats New West we would be the top seed,” Martens said. “We will

Battle for Delta championship Friday night IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The battle for Delta football supremacy for 2023 is on the line Friday night under the lights at John Oliver Park. South Delta Sun Devils take their 3-2 conference record (5-3 overall) into the game against the Seaquam Seahawks who are 4-1 in conference play (6-2 overall). The Sun Devils are coming off a pair of wins – 21-0 over Terry Fox last Saturday (Oct. 28) and 21-12 over Centennial on Oct. 20. Earlier in the month, the Sun Devils dropped a 31-15 game to St. Thomas More in Burnaby and a 21-20 heartbreaker to

New West in the annual battle for the Bill Kushnir Bronze Boot. Head coach Ray Moon said the month has had its ups and downs. “Against St. Thomas More we came out flat and they capitalized on a few miscues and that put us behind the eight-ball,” said Moon. “They scored 31-unanswered points on us. In New West, it was better, but turnovers cost us. “Against Centennial, we knew they were struggling and it was a must-win game and we came out strong. We took the lead and we were able to hold them off. Against Terry Fox, I think we picked up three turnovers and we capital-

ized. We should have put some more points on the board, but it was good to have a second win in a row.” In the win over Terry Fox, Dominic Dumas scored on a 12-yard run in the first. He also passed for a pair of TDs - both to Morgan MacCubbin for scores of nine and 55 yards. Dumas finished the game with 114 yards passing. Ryan Roberts ran for 148 yards while MacCubbin finished with 64 yards receiving. Moon said Friday’s game is going to be a tough test. “Seaquam has a big offensive line and a stud running back,”

said Moon. “The game has extra importance of course as this is another trophy game for us. We had to forfeit the Kushnir Boot to New West, so the Delta Championship against Seaquam is a big game. We want to not only claim that, but keep some momentum going into the playoffs. It is supposed to be cold and wet at game time, which for us, to beat them we have to contain the run and see if we can win the air battle, which will be tough with the expected weather.” The game is the last conference game for both teams. The first round of the playoffs will start next week.

As Local as Local gets! We are very happy with our recent experience of looking for our new home in Tsawwassen BC. Being new to the area, it was important to us to have a Real Estate Agent who was able to provide extensive insider information about Tsawwassen neighborhoods, schools and amenities. Since Alison Steen grew up in the area now lives in Ladner, she was able to do exactly that. Alison was quick to pick up on our interests, our priorities and how we like to work. She guided us when we needed it, in a professional manner and her insights we always right. Thanks to Alison and her team, we found exactly what we were looking for in our new home. With thanks, - Heather & Bryce Beatty

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

OBITUARIES

MacPherson, Kelly Marie

David Edward Trgovcic “Trigger”

August 6, 1966 - November 8, 2022 We love you and miss you, David. Every ry y second, of every ry y day. You fought so hard, and were so brave, but cancer stole you from us. Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hallow rtt of your chest. Grief is just part love with no place to go. - Jamie Anderson

A limb has fallen from our family tree... Born October 6, 1965 in London, Ontario Kelly was the second of five children, for Pat and Gary MacPherson. Having moved to the West Coast as a toddler, Kelly grew up loving the outdoors. Summers bring memories of family barbecues, fishing and camping trips, with down time spent in the backyard, jumping on the trampoline or swimming in the pool. Kelly took full advantage of BC’s beautiful coast becoming an avid crabber and as a BC Ferry employee for over 20 years. Showing off her talent of arts and crafts, it became her habit to decorate her yard for each holiday throughout the year. It was a place for friends and family to hang out, listening to Kelly’s instructions and loud country music! Kelly’s smile was contagious and she loved to see it reflected in those who enjoyed her work. It was her wish to have her yard acknowledged in the local paper and our family whole heartedly thanks everyone who made her dream come true. On October 10, 2023, at home and with family, Kelly passed from the cancer she fought bravely for 5 years.

Losing L i a lloved one leaves a heartache no one can heal. But their memory is a precious gift that no one can steal.

— We miss you and love you — Your wife Ruth, Cheryl, Randy, Amber, Ryley, Kaisha & Siera

It is in Shaylene, Kelly’s daughter and greatest joy, that we will never forget her smile. Joining her father, Gary (soaring with eagles), Kelly leaves behind her family: mother, Pat; siblings: Tara, Michelle (Shaun), Michael, Jodi; nephews: Matt, Brodie, Dawson, Nathan and niece: Hope; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Kelly would not want us to cry because it’s over but to smile because it happened! Please come, celebrate Kelly’s life: November 19, 2023 from 2 - 5 pm at the Tsawwassen Landing Wellness Center, 2221 Cormorant Drive, Delta.

WIGZELL, Dianne Margaret (nee Forsyth) April 17, 1944 - October 11, 2023 It is with deep sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of Dianne (Di). Predeceased by her parents Donald and Margot, stepfather Campbell and loving partner Larry. Survived by her brother Alistair and children Katharine and Alex, as well as nieces and nephews. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Di schooled in the UK and Kuwait, graduating from St. Leonard’s School at St. Andrews with honours. She continued her studies at Edinburgh University, completing a BSC in Computer Sciences. Her career started in London at Esso and took her to Switzerland working for SPL at Dow Chemical, where she met her first husband, Nigel. Married in 1970, they immigrated to Edmonton AB, Canada in 1974 with young daughter Katharine and soon had a son, Alex. In 1981 the family moved to BC, settling in Tsawwassen. A devoted mother, Dianne was still able to manage the Bayside Squash Club. In 1988, Di met her second husband (though never officially married) Lawrence Bracken. Di also worked at Purdy’s Chocolates for many years. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1998, Dianne would not let this define her. She was a strong woman who lived a full life enjoying Camping, Crafts, Curling, Bridge, Gardening, and Travel. Di regularly volunteered at the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. Dianne, Mom, you are missed greatly and will forever be in our hearts. Our deepest appreciation and thanks go to the wonderful nurses and staff at KinVillage for their care of our mother during the past three years. A Celebration of Life is planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to the Parkinson’s Society. Online condolences can be made at deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home 604.946.6040

BEAUDRY, Claude September 14, 1962 − October 20, 2023 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Claude Albert Bruce Beaudry on the 20th of October at the young age of 61. Claude leaves behind his loving wife of 30 years, Jacqueline (Gloanec), his two children, Reid and Madison, and his daughter−in−law Sophie (Hurworth). He is survived by his brothers Gilbert and Wilfred and sisters Monica and Elaine. He was a resident of the Tsawwassen community for 27 years, where he actively participated in Search and Rescue and community enhancement projects. Since 1994, Claude dedicated his professional career to B.C Ferries, where he made a significant impact and forged unbreakable bonds with his colleagues. Claude was born in Edmonton, Alberta and moved around army bases in Western Canada before settling in North Delta in 1969. He later lived in Surrey and joined the military as an artillery gunner in 1981. He completed his chef’s training in 1991, which took him on many adventures, including working in remote fishing camps, the Olympics, and aboard yachts, before settling into a long career at B.C Ferries, where he enjoyed working among friends. Claude had a great sense of adventure and loved to travel, including a life− changing trip to Africa. He was a devoted father and worked hard to provide a wonderful life for his family. Claude was best known for his sense of humour and for his caring heart. He was the uncontested family champion of Scrabble, a talented artist, and a resourceful builder. To honour Claude’s life and the joy he brought to those around him, a prayer service will be held at Sacred Heart Parish in Ladner on November 7th at 7 p.m, the following morning, a funeral mass (November 8th at 10 a.m) will take place. Following the Church service, we invite you to join us for a reception in the neighbouring parish hall, where we can celebrate Claude’s life together. COMMUNITY

Richard never wasted a minute of his life. In his retirement, he would often ski twenty runs at Whistler then drive straight onto the ferry to continue building an off-the-grid cabin on Sidney Island. Over the past few years, he made dozens of trips to Sidney Island, creating memories with his family and friends and putting the final touches on the cabin. Richard valued his relationships above all else. He was a constant presence in his kids’ lives, a true “dad” and proud of his family beyond words. He regularly reminisced about his extended family, friends near and far, colleagues, teammates and ski patrol buddies with a smile on his face. To everyone he had the pleasure of sharing a story or a laugh with along the way please know he placed these moments above everything! Richard was so grateful for the incredible support he received from the many physicians and nurses along the way. He demonstrated great courage and resilience in his battle with cancer until his final day. Richard’s life will be celebrated in the Springs Ballroom at 5133 Springs Boulevard, Tsawwassen, BC on Sunday, November 19th, 1-4pm. We invite you to join us for a lighthearted and joyful remembrance of his amazing life! If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please donate to the BC Cancer Foundation to support Dr. Bernie Eigl’s Bladder Cancer Research: bccancerfoundation.com
