A NAV CANADA information session was held Jan. 18, at Delta Secondary for residents to learn about proposed new flight path and approach procedures for aircraft arriving at Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

One of several information sessions held throughout the Lower Mainland, NAV CANADA is currently holding a public consultation process on its Vancouver Airspace Modernization Project (VAMP), initiated in 2018 to change aircraft flight movements over residential neighbourhoods.

In collaboration with the Vancouver Airport Authority, NAV CANADA’s airspace modernization review is focused on mitigating aircraft noise impacts over Delta by shifting aircraft approaches away from more populated areas

A member of the YVR Aeronautical Noise Management Committee, the City of Delta requested during NAV CANADA’s stakeholder input that aircraft routing be shifted to over less populated areas such as oceans, highways, and industrial and commercial areas.

No changes are proposed for departure routes or aircraft operating under visual flight rules

According to NAV CANADA, the more efficient arrival procedures will reduce an aircraft’s

flight time resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and some avoidance of residentially populated areas

According to a City of Delta report by Mel Cheesman, Director of Corporate Services, discussed at council’s Jan 9 meeting, the aircraft approach route and other changes should result in either no noticeable increase in current aircraft noise over Delta or even improvement over areas.

“These proposed approach routes indicate that NAV CANADA continues to make efforts to mitigate aircraft noise impacts over Delta, with the majority of proposed changes resulting in residential areas of Delta seeing either reduced or the same levels of regular

aircraft activity. This is positive news for Delta residents who are impacted by current standard terminal arrival routes over the city,” the report notes Cheesman told council that Tsawwassen, in particular, may benefit from the changes.

NAV CANADA’s proposed changes to approach procedures at YVR include the addition of new satellite-based procedures, known as Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR), as well as changes to existing arrival routes and procedures.

The Delta report notes the designs incorporate procedures, which together allow aircraft to fly a precise three-dimensional arrival path in the sky, have a continuous and quieter descent

profile and reduce flight time and fuel burn

The report adds that while not all aircraft are currently equipped with the necessary on-board technology or aircrew training, the new approach procedures will gradually increase in the Vancouver airspace as airlines continue to upgrade technology and train their aircrews

NAV CANADA will conduct a review of the first 180-day period following implementation.

YVR’s 2037 Master Plan

Meanwhile, on separate front, YVR’s 2037 Master Plan, approved by the federal government, projects a significant increase in the number of aircraft movements in the next few years.

Noting the City of Delta expressed concerns regarding the forecasted increase in air traffic over the community, the Master Plan document notes, “YVR is committed to maintaining ongoing dialogue and consulting on any substantial projects or airspace changes in partnership with NAV Canada”

YVR last year installed two more permanent noise monitors in Ladner at Hawthorne Elementary and in North Delta at Sunshine Hills Elementary. The airport has been managing other noise monitoring terminals across Metro Vancouver, including three others in Delta at Delview Secondary, North Delta Recreation Centre and South Delta Secondary.

Portseekscontractorto undertakeFraserRiverdredging

SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optim st com

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) has issued a request for proposals for a contractor to undertake annual maintenance dredging of the main navigation channels and port berths as well as management of the sand dredged.

According to the port, it administers maintenance dredging of the Fraser River deep-sea shipping channel and berths and approaches at DP World Fraser Surrey Docks.

Timely and efficient dredging is

essential to maintain the navigation channels and berths, particularly during and following the spring freshet as well as prior to the end of the dredge season, the port explains

The annual dredge volume from the navigation channels and berths ranges from three-to-4.5 million cubic metres, with a fiveyear average of 3.9 million cubic metres, the request for proposals states

The dredging season lasts approximately 258 days starting on or about June 16th and ending on the last day of February the following year.

It is anticipated that the term of the contract agreement will be for a minimum base term of 12 years with an opportunity to extend.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if there will be movement when it comes to a regular dredging program for the secondary river channels.

The port authority says that, outside of annual maintenance dredging, it has supported programs to dredge smaller channels of the river used by recreational boaters and houseboat residents The one-time programs were offered as part of a range of community support initiatives.

Flood upgrade costs in the billions for Delta

SANDOR

It would difficult for the City of Delta to come up with almost a couple of billion dollars on its own

That’s what engineering director Steven Lan told council at their Jan 9th meeting during discussion on a staff report on the province’s recently released British Columbia Flood Strategy Intentions Paper.

Council agreed to request the province develop a sustainable funding model for flood protection as the province seeks input on the Intentions Paper.

Noting the document is a precursor to the development of a provincial flood strategy, Lan said there has already been a great deal of tech-

nical work in the Lower Mainland when it comes to proposed flood strategies, including proposals brought forward by the Fraser Basin Council

“As such, we believe that most important in terms of moving forward with a flood strategy is the need for sustainable funding,” said Lan “The costs for improvements are far beyond the scope of local governments

“As an example, for the City of Delta, to upgrade our 67 km of dikes and our associated pump stations, our current estimate is approximately $1 9 billion Certainly, it’s not anything we can actually pay for ourselves we would need assistance of senior levels of government.”

Acting Mayor Dylan Kruger agreed that the price tag is beyond what

a city with an annual budget of $350 million can afford and that Delta needs to be strategic in aligning with senior levels of government

A report to council states the proposed strategic framework includes several priority program areas including understanding the flood risk, which involves updating flood maps to inform flood construction levels, conducting a province-wide flood risk assessment, developing a repository of dike information for public access and increasing awareness of the flood risk

Downriver home and business owners have been frustrated by overlapping layers of bureaucracy that lack of common sense, making it difficult to get anything built, have necessary

dike improvements, or undertake their own river dredging River Road business owner Mike Owen told the Optimist Ladner could be facing its own major disaster.

“A flood like Abbotsford here would be devastating for this community. It would wash away a lot of important infrastructure It would go right through the downtown business core and to the schools and community centre. I agree, the phrase ‘Russian Roulette’ applies here,” said Owen.

A member of the Ladner Sediment Group and River Road Property Owners’ Group, Owen said they have been lobbying for years without receiving any commitment to action on the issues by senior levels of government

Off-leashdogenclosure closerforPebbleHillPark

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist com

The City of Delta recently received conditional approval by BC Hydro for the latest proposed design for the Pebble Hill Park off-leash dog enclosure, subject to a few additional technical conditions

That is the latest from Parks, Recreation and Culture Director Trent Reid on the plan initiated a couple of years ago by the city to add a designated dog containment area and other park improvements

Reid noted the proposed park is within the BC Hydro right-of-way, thus, BC Hydro’s approval is required in order to proceed

BC Hydro requested additional technical testing, but the city is noting the utility was reviewing the proposed plans only from the perspective of impacts on transmission infrastructure and related public safety considerations

Reid told the Optimist one of the conditions to proceed is the use of “non-metallic” materials

for the fences

It was the main holdup preventing the project from proceeding to the next phase, he said, adding the city is now in the process of making the needed adjustments for final approval

Reid also noted that, to date, there have been two rounds of public consultation on the project over the past couple of years.

The Pebble Hill Park Reserve dog off-leash area was established in 2010 and is within the right-of-way The existing dog off-leash area is not fenced and relies on signage and natural boundaries.

The updated design for the enclosure does incorporate the majority of public input and recommendation feasible to do so given the BC Hydro conditions, said Reid

The city will be focusing on social media and on-site project signage to alert residents of the designs and timelines for the work, once all those details are confirmed, he said.

As far as the budget, the 2022 Capital Plan had $275,000 identified for

the project and the city will be updating the estimate once the design is fully complete and before tendering.

Some area residents have conveyed opposition, saying an overall park and neighbourhood plan should be undertaken with nearby residents properly consulted for their input

Stephanie Toom conveyed a series of concerns, telling the Optimist one of their biggest problems is the creation of another entry point into the park and its location

She said residents are opposed to having a pathway behind their homes when there is an entry path to the dog park which is a short distance away

She noted the constant noise from dogs and dog walkers from dawn to dusk will disturb the peace and enjoyment of those homeowners beside the path

Among their other concerns, she also noted there is a lack of “people amenities” and a “people-only” space at the site

A man convicted in the case of a gruesome double murder in Tsawwassen three decades ago has been granted further day parole for six months with special conditions imposed.

The Parole Board of Canada, however, has once again not granted full parole to Derek Lord.

Lord and friend David Muir were hired by Darren Huenemann to kill his mother and grandmother, Sharon Huenemann and Doris Leatherbarrow, so Huenemann could get a multi-million dollar inheritance

The three teens lived in Saanich at the time of the murder and at trial the prosecution argued that on Oct 5, 1990,

Huenemann and his girlfriend dropped Lord and Muir off at the ferry terminal.

The pair then went to Leatherbarrow’s Tsawwassen home and, after being invited in for dinner by the two women, bludgeoned and stabbed them to death. They killers attempted to make the crime scene appear as a robbery.

The two teens then took the ferry home and were picked up by Huenemann and his girlfriend.

All three were convicted in 1992.

Lord, who turns 50 this year, and Muir were both sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years. Huenemann received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years He remains in prison

After his conviction,

Muir, who pleaded not guilty at trial, admitted his role in the murders and has been out on parole for years He was granted day parole in April 2002 and full parole a year later

The board granted Lord day parole in March 2020 and that has been continued at six-month intervals.

Lord also continues to claim he is innocent, something noted by the parole board.

His continued conditions include having no direct or indirect contact with the victims’ families including extended family members

In its latest decision on the continuation of Lord’s day parole release and on the recommendation to authorize extended leave privileges, the parole board noted, “For a continuation of day parole,

the Board must determine whether or not your continued release will constitute an undue risk to society and whether it will contribute to the protection of society by facilitating your reintegration as a law-abiding citizen

“The case management team (CMT) are also recommending a graduated program of extended leave privileges beginning with a two month period of six days outside to the community residential facility (CRF) and one day at the CRF, then a two-month period of eight days out of the CRF and two days in the CRF and then transitioning to 10 days out of the CRF and two days in the CRF The time spent outside of the CRF will be at your family home with your wife and child.”

Police still working to identify suspects in Halloween incident

The Delta Police investigation continues into the fireworks chaos involving hundreds of youths in South Delta last Halloween night

Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu told the Delta Police Board at its Jan. 18 meeting that a lot of video footage has been gathered regarding the incident at South Delta Secondary and Dennison Park

An estimated 400 youths engaged in a wild fireworks fight that resulted in several injuries to the participants as well as police officers.

Noting several youths were interviewed, Sidhu told the police board that it has been difficult to

positively identify suspects in the video footage

However, they have “ an understanding of who did it” but charges have not been laid

The department is also conducting an operational review of its response to the incident, said Sidhu

Following the incident, Mayor George Harvie announced that he asked the city manager to coordinate a meeting with the Delta Police Chief, Delta Fire Chief and the school district to review the issue and collaborate on potential fireworks bylaw amendments

In a letter to parents, Delta School District Superintendent Doug Sheppard described the

facebook.com/Delta-Optimist

disruption, injuries and property damage caused by youth as extremely reckless and dangerous behaviour

Sheppard said it seemed that many of the incidents were organized and deliberate

“Respectfully, we ask you to talk with your child(ren) about the need for them to make safe and responsible choices, and to avoid getting drawn into the ‘mob mentality’ that can take over when large groups of youth gather…” his letter in part read

He also noted the irresponsible behaviour of the youths involved put a significant drain on both Delta Police Department and City of Delta resources

OPINION

Society: bebetter

We saw the worst in society on full display Monday.

Just before noon, Delta Police responded to a man in distress, suffering a mental health crisis on the Alex Fraser Bridge

While officers began negotiations with the individual, officers made the difficult decision to close lanes on the bridge for their safety and the safety of the person in crisis. This impacted travel for thousands for several hours –close to eight hours in fact – when officers were successfully able to talk the man down from the bridge

But while police were negotiating with this man, we witnessed the worst in human behaviour.

Some chose to blast images taken from the scene across social media, bystanders, according to police, got out of their vehicles, and interfered with police

Later in the evening, two motorists drove through barricades putting the lives of police, highway workers and the person in crisis in jeopardy, causing thousands of dollars in damage to vehicles. One of those drivers was found to be impaired and has been charged

If you were one of the motorists that was stuck on the Alex Fraser Bridge or in other areas of the Lower Mainland trying to get to your destination, I get the frustration, but isn’t a human life worth more than extra time spent for your evening commute?

What if this had been your family member or friend? You would have wanted the police to do everything they could to ensure a safe outcome, right? Posting images and heartless comments and speculation on social media is abhorrent behaviour and I’m disgusted by those who did this.

Instead of shaming the person in crisis, or how police handled the crisis, shame government for not providing police with the added resources they need to handle these situations Shame government for not providing more mental health support, more doctors, nurses and crisis workers

That is the conversation we should be having, not insensitive comments on how long it took some to get home Monday night

Monday’s closure of the Alex Fraser Bridge is another example that we are headed in the wrong direction towards a new tunnel

The circumstance was terrible A police incident closed the southbound lanes of the bridge, and everyone was pointed in the other direction to the tunnel In this case the closure was entirely necessary as the police looked after the situation Fortunately, the incident was safely resolved

For me, so what I was a little late, but safely arrived at my destination There were much more important things to look after than a little inconvenience on my end.

When any one of the crossings gets closed or seriously held up, it creates gridlock around the Fraser Same thing with the North Shore – one pothole on the Second Narrows and you can count on at least an hour or more for a trip that usually takes five minutes. I was stuck in that one as well

As the Metro Vancouver area grows, this will happen

more often. We hear about higher immigration levels, but there’s also non-permanent residents and interprovincial migration that affect how many people live and work here It’s no wonder we have more and worsening traffic, high housing prices and trouble finding affordable places to rent

So why are we trying to solve traffic issues with the same legacy systems? Making an eight-lane tunnel (but really only six lanes, with a dedicated transit lane) doesn’t solve the problem – we have three lanes at rush hour now, and it’s still backed up One problem, a bad accident or breakdown,

and it is gridlock again And a four-lane Pattullo Bridge makes no sense to me Yes, it will be much safer, but will it solve the bigger problem, that being what will traffic look like in 10 or 20 or 50 years with the growth planned for the area?

I would think that another crossing would be a much better option than disrupting traffic horribly for the next six years of construction. And heaven help us should something go wrong with the current tunnel while the new one is being built A third crossing has been proposed but rejected, but it seems to be more of a political issue than a practical one

I’m not a traffic planner or civil engineer There may be good reasons for this approach, but I don’t see it After all, I’m just a guy stuck in traffic

Read your articles on the effect that increased food prices and increased demand for help from seniors on a fixed income, are having. This is a sad situation and requires all to see what we can do to help I remember being

asked to bring food donations to our church for several Sundays. It was quite successful, but when the Food Bank thanked us, they mentioned that it was more valuable to donate money as they could buy cheaper by buying in bulk and also getting the most

needed items at the time, so, it was decided to place a special jar at the entry to the church for special donations. This past Sunday it was announced that Tsawwassen United Church had collected $1,750 Maybe other groups could follow

What happened to the overpass for 44th Avenue?

Editor:

I see there is much talk about an overpass on River Road.

I think the better discussion should be about a better way to get to the Ladner Trunk from River Road.

With the new tunnel all that roadwork to put in extra traffic signals

and lanes at the existing overpass, seems money wasted if it all has to be changed for a new tunnel Maybe with all the changes we may see an improvement to the scary Highway 17 merge to Highway 99.

But whatever happened to the overpass that was planned for

44th Avenue along the old railway right of way? There was to be another way to get out of Ladner, across now 17A to East Ladner Much of the right-away has become an ersatz dog park, and even fenced in and incorporated into people’s backyards.

Fast food bag fees are a problem

Editor: I am writing in support of the article written by Sandor Gyarmati in the publication dated Jan. 12 with regard to fast food paper bag fees.

I attended McDonald’s drive-thru recently to purchase two meal deals for two of my senior friends

The person taking the order asked if I wanted to pay 30 cents for a bag which I replied no;

plus did I want to round off my bill to the nearest dollar to donate to McDonald House

That was the first I had heard of this new procedure with regard to bag fees When I reached the pick-up window the person handed me a tray with all these items on it. I took the tray to try and deal with this problem

The irony is that McDonald’s just shot themselves in the foot

as they ask you to top off your bill to the nearest dollar and donate the money for the McDonald House to help families and children in need, which is a great cause and then ask you to pay for the bag that is biodegradable to carry the food out.

I hope Delta council continues their good work and finds a way to rectify this problem

On Jan 11 at the Ladner Community Centre, I viewed the display for a six-storey development in the village of Ladner. BC Hydro George Massey Tunnel Transmission Relocation Project

The Province is proposing to replace the existing four-lane George Massey Tunnel with a new, eight-lane immersed tube tunnel, and will decommission the existing tunnel once the new tunnel is in operation.

A section of one of our power lines crosses the Fraser River through the existing George Massey Tunnel, so we need to relocate it before the tunnel is decommissioned. We’re studying three alternatives that include both overhead and underground lines for this project.

Re: Bruce Fougner letter (Jan. 19, Optimist)

For the record I am a fourth generation Ladnerite who is not against change or development

His dissertation in his letter about the official community plan (OCP) having laid out this type of building is only relevant given that despite extreme opposition in December 2022, council amended the OCP to allow six storeys

This development proposal preceded the OCP amendment awaiting sixstorey approval

This density and building height is not needed in the confined, small core of the Ladner Village where parking and traffic is an issue now.

The writer’s comment of having rental units must have been pulled out of rarified air as there is no rental or affordable housing proposed in this development Make no mistake, these units will

There needs to be careful thought in providing a Ladner bypass. Avoiding Trunk Road, a bypass connecting Ladner directly to Highway 17A needs to be considered before the major developments are approved If there isn’t a sufficient solution for now and into the future, the developments need to be reduced significantly

not be affordable.

Furthermore, there is no heritage form or feel from the street to this development as proposed and needs to be changed Mayor and council must listen to the wishes of the majority of residents and rethink this and other development proposals with this height and density within the Ladner Village core. Residents who live and use the services of Ladner Village must be heard

The beginning of the end of Ladner Village?

Editor:

The Dunbar Lumber re-development application if approved will be the beginning of the end of the Ladner Village

This proposal and its effect on the Village needs a public hearing and yet for some reason this council has decided to waive this opportunity

Why? What is it afraid of? A contrary opinion?

Some of the most contentious re-developments in South Delta have benefited from

concerned residents’ ideas brought forward at public hearings Public hearings bring people together, build community (instead of shutting it out) even with differing points of view

People agree more housing is needed While I was on council, it was generally agreed and the public understood, that housing density should increase outside of the Village, still within convenient walking distance to its shops and

restaurants, in order to preserve the character of the Village

If approved, this six-storey building will be the first of a series of dominoes that will see the Village lose its character and charm, replaced by ever increasing six-storey buildings.

We are all familiar with the old saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” to which we might be adding, “It only takes one council to ruin a Village.”

GlobalContainerTerminals, VFPAwarofwordscontinues

SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist com

The war of words continues between the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and the operator of the container port at Roberts Bank

The port authority is still waiting for word from the federal government if approval will come for the port’s Terminal 2 application, which would see a new three-berth facility constructed on a manmade island adjacent to the current Deltaport facility

The Deltaport three-berth container facility operator, Global Container Terminals (GCT), has its own competing application, proposing to build a fourth berth (DP4) connected to its facility.

A federal court ruling last July dismissed GCT allegations of bias against the port

In 2019, GCT filed an application for a judicial review, challenging the port authority’s decisionmaking in relation to its long-term planning for delivering container capacity

The port authority last week issued a news bulletin noting the federal court in November issued a judgment on supplementary costs, ordering GCT to pay the port $115,000 in legal fees.

Alex Munro, a senior communications advisor for the port, told the Optimist that GCT’s contention that the earlier court ruling was mixed was refuted by the court, which said there was “ no doubt” the port authority was the “ successful party”

Saying the November ruling was the second time in the past year the federal court has ruled “decisively” in the port authority’s favour, the news bulletin quotes from the ruling including the statement, “With my decision, the

chickens have come home to roost, and that strategic decision on the part of GCT now has consequences as regards to costs”

Munro said the port’s focus continues to be delivering the infrastructure needed with T2 to support Canada’s growing trade Attached to the news bulletin is the November ruling by Federal Justice Panagiotis (Peter) Pamel, who said that although he did find, as part of his reasons for judgment, that the VFPA breached its duty of procedural fairness towards GCT, that initial error was “for all intents and purposes ” remedied by the VFPA when it reversed course a few months later, but GCT chose “ pursuing an aggressive litigation strategy ” alleging serious misconduct.

Describing the port authority’s news bulletin as more “spin” than anything else, GCT spokesperson Marko Dekovic in an email to the Optimist said the port has left out a few facts.

“The VFPA strangely neglected to note that GCT has appealed the July

2022 court decision to the Federal Court of Appeal The hearing date has not yet been set, but we expect it to be before the end of June 2023 It is clear the VFPA took selective, self-serving comments from judge’s November 2022 decision regarding costs The fact remains that the judge affirmed yet again, Federal Crown Agent, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority breached its duty of procedural fairness towards GCT,” stated Dekovic

“What they did after is to sweep it under the rug by reversing the move, and judging by their communication efforts now, clearly this is something worth appealing for the benefit of all Canadians and all investors into our ports”

He noted GCT asked the court to waive the legal costs and the court agreed to lowering them. Thus, GCT paid the VFPA $115,000 in legal costs in December 2022.

Dekovic also noted GCT is not the only party facing fairness issues, other tenants have filed judicial reviews

Imagine if your behaviour became your reputation, not only out in public, but even more so at home Imagine if people were able to recognize you as a Christian (in a good way) simply by your behaviour.

Philippians 4:4-5 “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all”

‘Rejoice’ means - ‘to be glad’ - always Listen, the only way to always be glad in God is by trusting Him. Knowing that He has every situation covered and nothing is outside of His reach. Imagine you were known for your rejoicing - in other words, known for your unfailing trust in God, no matter how bad the situation might be It would be amazing to be known for that. Also for your gentleness

Here is my definition to help us understand the

word “gentleness”

“Christian gentle people, do not seek to retaliate. They are willing to give and take instead of always standing rigidly on their rights They are gentle, kind, courteous, and tolerant, they exhibit a sweet reasonableness and an ability to extend to others the kindly consideration one would wish to receive themselves The gentle person is not spineless but selfless”

A gentle person never forces others into having the same opinion but instead trust God to reveal the truth through love

Colossians 3:12 “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tender-hearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience”

It means you don’t anger easily, you are kind, friendly, and inviting. You don’t think too highly of yourself, you are willing to put other people first Even when there is a conflict, you show gentleness and great patience

Imagine if our behaviour were gentle and “evident to all.” Imagine if this became our reputation. Let’s make this our reputation to a world that desperately needs gentleness

Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you ”

NatureNotes:The winter courtship of Hooded Mergansers

KATHLEEN FRY

In the winter, when local freshwater sloughs and ponds freeze over, most of the ducks head to more marine and brackish habitats offshore where salinity and water movement keep ice from forming Not all of them do this, though

Walking around a quiet pond that has even a small sliver of open water along the shoreline, it can be quite startling to come across a group of noisy Hooded Mergansers in the middle of their winter courtship activities

Mergansers are fisheating ducks and prey minnow species such as Three-spined Stickleback gravitate to the ice-free areas of local ponds during a freeze-up. There are

probably a hundred or so Hooded Mergansers in the Ladner area every winter in quiet backwater areas with lots of woody debris along the shorelines

Courtship of “Hoodies” usually takes the form of several of the dapper, black and white males and at least one or more drab, brown and grey females, all swimming in

line together Courtship starts when the males start raising their head crests (creating a bobblehead look) and swimming around the females and one another

They make a “ pop ” noise and sometimes they seem to take a deep breath and look downwards, then go into a series of “head throws,” bopping their heads back

and forth several times. The most distinctive noisy phase is when they stop this and tack past a female like a small sailboat on a wide turn while uttering a low growling, puttputting noise like a small motorbike The females sometimes respond with a “yack” noise, but generally seem indifferent. You often have to watch the group activities for quite a while before all of this posturing results in a pair actually forming and the birds copulating in the water.

Sidekick hosting auditions for March show

The Sidekick Players Club is please to present The Sweet Delilah Swim Club by Jamie Wooten, Nicholas Hope and Jessie Jones and directed by Laura Sutherland-Smith in March and April, but first it must be cast.

Auditions will be held at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172 56th Street, on Sunday, Jan. 29 and Tuesday, Jan 31 from 7 to 9 p m both nights

This will be a cold read from the script, which is available at The Vancouver Library for perusal.

Requirements are five women in their mid-40’s. Characters in this play will be portrayed at ages 44, 49, 54 and 77

Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships

Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage, the “Sweet Delilah” on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives

As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges (men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce, aging) that life flings at them And when

fate throws a wrench into one of their lives, these friends, proving the enduring power of “teamwork” rally ’round their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction

The Sweet Delilah Swim Club is the story of these five unforgettable women - a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever

Habits that affect your cognitive health

Various changes to appearance and health are associated with aging.

Issues such as diminished vision, waning muscle strength and gray hairs are among the more common and noticeable side effects of aging

Cognitive decline is another symptom often associated with aging, even if that needn’t be the case.

Certain lifestyle choices can protect against cognitive decline and dementias While there is no surefire way to prevent dementias, here are some good habits for maintaining cognitive function well into your golden years

Exercise frequently

Harvard Health reports that exercise, in addition to the many other benefits it provides, may help improve cognitive function in people who have already experienced memory issues Exercise may be particularly advantageous to people who carry the APOE4 gene variant, which makes people more susceptible to Alzheimer’s Speak with a doctor about how much exercise is needed and what is safe for your age

Enjoy video games

Playing a favorite video game may

improve long-term cognitive function. Researchers at Cambridge Brain Sciences found study participants who played non-cognitive-training video games were associated with better performance in several cognitive domains, but only for younger (age 18 to 64)

participants Cognitive training games, on the other hand, were not associated with any cognitive improvement

Stay socially engaged

According to a study published in the journal Experimental Aging Research, seniors who have high levels

of social engagement also have better cognitive function. Getting together with friends, participating in a club, attending religious studies, and any other activity that gets you out with other people can help with cognitive function

Eat a healthy diet

Eating a diverse array of healthy foods is beneficial Nutritious diets can help reduce the risk for illnesses that may affect cognitive ability Eating well also helps keep the brain healthy. A Mediterranean diet appears to lower the risk or slow the progression of dementia in people who have the condition

Get help for sleep disorders

Lack of sleep can affect memory and learning. By getting help for sleep disorders, you may reduce your risk for cognitive issues.

While it is not possible to prevent or cure cognitive conditions like dementias with lifestyle changes, certain behaviors can lower the risk of developing these illnesses or reduce their severity

Actionplancoming tohelpDelta’sseniors

Most significant age group increase in city has been among those between 65 & 84

Seniors living in the City of Delta will get a little more help to live independent lives

The city is planning to develop a new strategy, part of the recommended series of actions in the city’s draft Social Action Plan

Delta recently received a $25,000 grant from the BC Healthy Communities: AgeFriendly Community Grants Program to undertake an assessment of the seniors’ demographic in the city and develop an age-friendly strategy/action plan

The grant program is delivered by BCHC in partnership with the BC Ministry of Health.

Grants are offered in two funding streams with a first phase involving planning, while a second phase involves projects.

“With Delta’s growing seniors’ population, it is important to identify ways to ensure people can continue living independent, active lives, being involved in the community, and hav-

ing a voice and access to the resources they need,” a recent report to council notes.

City staff will be working over the next year with a local planning consultant with specific expertise in the field to consult with community members and service providers They will develop a Delta-specific plan with practical actions for creating a more age-friendly community, the report adds

The next step will be to apply for funding for phase two towards implementing the actions identified.

The target audience is older adults ages 65-and-up, as that group has grown dramatically in the last 10 years in Delta. People in the 50-to-64 age range are to also be considered

A previous report to council notes population aging is a major issue that is impacting all communities

By 2031, an estimated 25 per cent of the province’s population will be over the age of 65.

Delta has a high proportion of seniors, with 20.5 per cent of the population in 2021 being aged 65 and over, up from 18.7 per cent in 2016, accord-

ing to the latest Statistics Canada data.

In comparison, for Canada, the proportion of seniors was 19 per cent in 2021

According to the draft Delta Social Action Plan report, between 2006 and 2016, the most significant population increase in the city was among those between 65-and-84 years of age

While Tsawwassen has a higher proportion of those aged 65 and over compared to Ladner and North Delta,

North Delta accounts for more than 42 per cent of all senior residents in Delta, according to that report.

A motion submitted by Delta and approved at last year ’ s Union of BC Municipalities convention asks that the provincial government review the resources available to at-risk seniors, identify service gaps and implement measures to ensure that all seniors have access to some level of social supports, irrespective of housing status.

What seniors can do to safeguard their mental health

No one is immune to issues that can adversely affect their mental health, including men and women nearing retirement age and those who are already retired Though the term “golden years ” suggests life in retirement is one sunny day after another, many individuals 60 and older are dealing with mental health issues.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 15 percent of the world’s adults aged 60 and over suffer from a mental disorder. What makes that statistic even more troubling is that the WHO acknowledges it likely doesn’t paint the most accurate picture of seniors and mental health, as depression is often undiagnosed among older men and women and untreated because it co-occurs with other issues affecting seniors

However, much progress has been made in recent years thanks to a heightened awareness of the problem of seniors and mental health That means seniors now have ample resources they can look to as they seek to learn what they can do to safeguard their mental health.

Recognizing warning signs

Recognizing the signs of mental health issues is the first step to getting treatment Mental health issues vary, and individuals with anxiety will likely experience different symptoms than those

with depression

The following are some of the warning signs of mental health issues

*Noticeable changes in mood, energy level, or appetite

*Feeling flat or having trouble feeling positive emotions

*Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much

*Difficulty concentrating, feeling restless, or on edge

*Increased worry or feeling stressed

*Anger, irritability, or aggressiveness

*Ongoing headaches, digestive issues, or pain

*Misuse of alcohol or drugs

*Sadness or hopelessness

*Suicidal thoughts

*Engaging in high-risk activities

*Obsessive thinking or compulsive behavior

*Thoughts or behaviors that interfere with work, family, or social life

*Engaging in thinking or behavior that is concerning to others

*Seeing, hearing, and feeling things that other people do not see, hear, or feel

Seeking help

As noted, a growing awareness of

mental health issues and how they affect seniors has translated to more available resources for aging men and women who need help

In Canada, individuals can visit the Canadian Mental Health Association at https://cmha.ca/find-help/find-cmhain-your-area/ for contact information for various groups across the country. Behaviors that can be beneficial

Healthy lifestyle changes can have long-term benefits of seniors’ mental health.

Such changes include:

*Being physically active

*Eating a healthy diet that can reduce risk for diseases that can bring on disability and depression

*Getting adequate sleep, which for seniors is between seven to nine hours

*Remaining socially active, including regular contact with friends and family

*Participating in activities you enjoy

*Sharing mental issues or concerns with friends, family members and your physician

Research indicates that seniors are vulnerable to mental health issues

The numbers don’t lie Locally owned businesses may be classified as “small,” but they have a big impact on the national economy

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Business Employment Dynamics report, small businesses created 10.5 million net new jobs between 2000 and 2019, accounting for 65 1 percent of net new jobs created since 2000 in the United States

The Government of Canada reports that the number of small businesses in Canada in 2020 was far greater than the number of medium and large businesses, accounting for 97 9 percent of all the businesses in the country

Supporting locally

owned businesses is a great way to support a neighbour, but that’s not the only attraction Here are several reasons to shop small

The feel-good factor

Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders.

A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbour

Create job opportunities

Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, and it also keeps their

employees afloat. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States That’s also true in Canada, where 68 8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she, or a relative, will need a job Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals

Keep more money in the community

The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community.

Enjoy a more local flavour

National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization,

There are many reasons why shopping local is important.

but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small

businesses also may be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains

These are just a few of the many reasons to seek out small businesses when in need of products or services

Delta opens South Fraser play with home court loss to top 10 ranked Huskies

For about a quarter, it looked like the Delta Pacers might be a handful for the overwhelming pre-season favourite of the SurDel Boys AAA Basketball League

Then the North Delta Huskies went to work

The province’s ninth ranked team outscored the hosts 24-5 in the second quarter and cruised to an 88-51 victory on Jan 18 in Ladner.

It was the league opener for both squads with the next four weeks and seven games to determine match-ups for the league playoffs, slated for Feb. 21 to 23 at Clayton Heights in Surrey

Pacers head coach Dave Jones and assistant coach Steve Chong were probably holding their breath before tip-off, wondering how their team would hold up with just eight available players, thanks to injuries and other commitments

The hosts came out of a blistering-paced opening 10 minutes trailing by three (18-15) before

the Huskies’ full court defensive pressure, slick transition game and depth of talent took over. North Delta opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run and it would only get worse as they turned errant passes into easy baskets

“We got a little confused by their defence and they are very good at passing the ball,” said Jones “We just got to bring our intensity up with everything we do, especially against a team like that They can dribble They can shoot and they are very interchangeable”

The Pacers have showed some promise in tournament and exhibition play, including an 80-74 loss to provincially ranked Steveston-London back in December

Impressive Grade 11s Lucas Kosa and Macin Macdonald took care of most of their scoring Wednesday with 21 and 15 points respectively

Delta takes on Clayton Heights this week before hosting a twoday tournament, Friday and Saturday

Bigger South Delta Alumni tourney set for Feb. 11

mbooth@delta-optimist com

There will be more teams hitting the ice when the South Delta Alumni Hockey Tournament returns to the Ladner Leisure Centre next month

Even though the inaugural event had to stick-handle its way through COVID-19 restrictions a year ago, it was a huge success, raising $15,000 for the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation and additional funds for the South Delta Minor Hockey Association This year ’ s Saturday, Feb. 11 fund-

raising tournament will increase to eight alumni teams and more than 120 players

“Every single player is coming back from last year except one who has a conflict that weekend, so that’s a pretty big statement at how well it went,” said Matt Ryan, one of the tournament organizers who now has SD Hockey Alumni as a registered society with a board of directors. “Not only will we have two additional teams, but the roster sizes will be increasing too It’s great to see more people want to be involved and we are to the point where we have run out of jersey colours, which is a

good problem to have”

It was Ryan who came up with the alumni tourney idea after constantly seeing former South Delta players on different beer league teams. He was also able to get support from the local corporate community including Four Winds Brewery that ran a beer garden The Mills family business is back again this year and are promising to do even more.

“They are brewing a batch of light lager that is being done especially for our event,” said Ryan

He is pleased the City of Delta is not only allowing the beer to

be consumed in the south side seating again, but children can also be in the section with their parents.

“That was one of the things that really stood out last year. It wasn’t the (players’) buddies coming out and wanting to drink beer, but rather the community and family members coming out to be supportive of the event,” he said “Basically for my (young) kids, that’s the first time they have seen me play because typically my men ’ s league games are always 8 or 9 p m ”

Games will take place from 11 a m to 6 p m on Feb 11
