Delta firefighters have been playing the roles of Santa and his elves the past few weeks ensuring that several Delta organizations have additional funds to provide the programs and services to the community.

Thanks to more than $50,000 raised during its October Boot Drive, the Delta Firefighters

Charitable Society presented funds to seven organizations as part of its Seven Days of Giving Christmas campaign.

“Obviously it’s been an incredibly difficult two years for so many charities and when our committee discussed how we can best support our community, we decided to build on what we did in 2019, but increase the number of charities,” said Delta firefighter Kristy

Storey.

The beneficiaries of the Seven Days of Giving campaign include: Delta Boys & Girls Club (South Delta and North Delta $5,000 each), Deltassist - $10,000, Delta Meals on Wheels (South Delta and North Delta - $5,000 each), Delta Community Living Society - $10,000, Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association $10,000, OWL - $10,000 and Azure Place - $10,000.

In addition to this campaign, the Charitable Society has distributed funds to 10 other organizations and programs in 2021: Kidsport Delta - $8,500 Muscular Dystrophy Canada - $10,000 Delta Hospital + Community Health Foundation - $4,600 BC Professional Firefighters’ Burn Fund $10,000 Delta Stroke Recovery

An early Monday evening fire resulted in extensive damage to a residential home in the Pebble Hill area of Tsawwassen.

Initially 16 firefighters were on the scene in the 300 block of 54A Street around 7 p.m. and it was quickly upgraded to a working fire with four fire halls involved.

“We brought in an additional four firefighters and had 20 on the

scene in total. We had the engine from Tsawwassen, the engine and tower from Ladner, the ladder from Tilbury and rescue from Boundary Bay Airport,” explained Delta deputy fire Chief Darren Grant. “With the (cold) weather and slope of the street, it didn’t make fighting this fire any easier.”

Traffic calming, permit parking approved for Boundary Bay neighbourhood Council approves plan based on community survey results SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The majority of residents who responded to a recent city survey supported a proposed traffic calming plan for Boundary Bay. Council last week approved a recommendation to proceed with the implementation of the plan based on the survey results.

Boundary Bay Regional Park has seen a big influx of visitors during sunny weekends and holidays.

The Centennial Beach location has seen a significant jump in park users, from 923,000

visitors in 2019 to nearly 1.4 million in 2020, a 40 percent increase. More than 400,000 people came to the park in July and August 2020 alone.

In past summers, parking lots at Centennial Beach exceeded capacity, resulting in spillover traffic entering the Boundary Bay neighbourhood.

Results from public consultation earlier this year indicated general support for additional traffic calming measures in the neighbourhood.

Staff were then directed to proceed with developing a detailed traffic calming plan

and conducting further consultation on that detailed plan, which occurred last month.

In addition to the traffic calming initiatives, this summer’s Boundary Bay permit parking program was successful in reducing the amount of traffic and parking complaints from area residents, a report to council notes.

The permit parking program was in effect on weekends and holidays from May 1 until Sept. 8.

Bylaw staff were actively enforcing it over the summer.

Staff recommend that the permit parking program continue.

Over the past year, Earthwise Society has been hard at work, along with a team of dedicated individuals and organizations, to help rescue healthy food and put it on the tables of those in need.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a dramatic impact on local food security, affecting the lives and

livelihoods of countless local families. Hundreds of people across Delta lack access to nutritious and affordable food, yet sadly, tonnes of edible food ends up in the landfill on a daily basis.

Earthwise Society is the lead agency for the Delta Food Coalition (DFC), a network of community groups collaborating to

Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project Public Comments Invited What is happening?

December 15, 2021 — The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (the Agency) is holding a public comment period as part of the environmental assessment for the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project, a proposed three-berth marine container terminal located in Delta, British Columbia, approximately 35 kilometres south of Vancouver.

The Agency is now inviting the public and Indigenous groups to comment on additional information provided by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (the proponent), following an information request sent by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change (the Minister) in August 2020. The material requested included more information on the potential effects of the project to fish and fish habitat, species at risk such as the Southern Resident killer whale, biofilm, and potential effects to human health and the current use of lands and resources for traditional purposes.

The Agency is also inviting comments on the potential environmental assessment conditions for the project. Final conditions would become legally-binding on the proponent if the Minister ultimately issues a decision statement indicating the project may proceed.

How can I participate?

Comments can be submitted online by visiting the project home page on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry (reference number 80054). The potential environmental assessment conditions and the additional information provided by the proponent are also available on the Registry. Comments received will be published online as part of the project file.

Written comments in either official language will be accepted until February 13, 2022.

What are the next steps?

Following the public comment period, the Minister will determine whether the information provided by the proponent satisfies the information request. If it does, the Minister will consider the additional information submitted by the proponent, comments received from the public and Indigenous groups, and the Review Panel Report in making an environmental assessment decision for the project. The Minister will determine whether the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects when mitigation measures are taken into account.

If the Minister decides the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, the decision on whether the effects are justified will be referred to the Governor in Council.

Last year, Earthwise Society’s Harvest Box Program stepped up to provide emergency food relief in response to the pandemic, and Harvest Box has now become a key local food security program that will continue to make a difference in our community for years to come.

Through this program, fresh and nutritious food is rescued from local homeowners, farms, and grocery stores, and delivered weekly to vulnerable people.

Pam Shaw, of the Crossroads United Church in North Delta, has seen firsthand the difference that Earthwise Harvest boxes are making. This season, Shaw made weekly deliveries to eight households in North Delta. She noted that the produce was always fresh and displayed beautifully, and families appreciated the attached newsletters, complete with recipes and nutrition tips.

“Earthwise does an excellent job of coordinating with the growers and organizing the distribution,” said Shaw. “Getting healthy food into people’s fridges and helping them stretch their budgets makes good common sense. The households I delivered to really appreciated those Friday dropoffs of fresh, local food.”

This summer, Earthwise Society’s goal was to deliver 400 boxes to needy families, and with the support of DFC and the United Way of the Lower Mainland, they have well exceeded that goal.

According to Vivian Chung, Food Security Coordinator at Earthwise Society, one of this year’s biggest highlights has been the overwhelming amount of community support that Earthwise and the Harvest Box Program has received.

“We got lots of donations from local farms and community members, and had many amazing volunteers-including over a dozen new volunteershelp with fruit gleaning, prep and delivery,” said Chung. “Without them, we definitely would not have been able to get out as many boxes as we did this season. It’s been great seeing how much the program has grown this year!”

Earthwise also wishes to thank its Victory Gardeners, who have grown produce at home and shared their harvest, and to the Don’t Mow Grow families who have worked with Earthwise to transform parts of their land into productive food gardens.

For the Christmas season, Earthwise Society is proud to be providing vulnerable individuals and families with special Holiday Harvest Boxes full of fresh local seasonal veggies. Ladner All Saints serves up free Christmas dinner MARK BOOTH

If cooking a Christmas dinner for 10 can be challenge try 80 and serving everyone in a short period of time.

That’s what the Ladner All Saints Anglican Church pulled off with its free monthly community meal on Dec. 14 that welcomed dinner guests into its parish hall for the first time since the pre-pandemic days in February 2020.

They were treated to a full course turkey buffet dinner and all the trimmings courtesy of volunteer chef David Blair and his “elves” who did everything from cutting vegetables to preparing the tables with Christmas décor. There were even non-meat entrees for vegetarians.

“Right now it’s been 42 hours of prep work,” said Blair, just minutes before the guests’ arrival.

“This is how you do it

at hotels. The turkeys are de-boned. Then I wrap them, cook them, tray them and then they go into the oven again before being served.

There is 60 pounds of mashed potatoes here and 16 litres of gravy.”

B.C. Fresh donated 95 percent of the vegetables that included 40 pounds of Brussels sprouts, along with turnips and parsnips.

“They really stepped up for us and I had four or five of ‘my little elves’ in here yesterday cutting up vegetables and peeling potatoes,” continued Blair who uses his connections with suppliers to get wholesale prices.

Those “elves” are church members who generously donate their time each month to make the community meal a reality. The dinner is funded through All Saints’ annual budget and proceeds from its Poinsettia Bazaar held each November. All prep-

aration work is done in an impressive commercial grade kitchen that was part of a 2017 church renovation.

“David wanted to do something for Christmas so we decided to combine the parishioners’ dinner with our community meal,” explained Liz McDonald, All Saints community meal coordinator. “It’s the first time we have ever had to ask people to pre-register because it’s difficult to cater (a Christmas dinner) when you have no idea how many people are coming. Then some people want extra.”

The parish hall comfortably accommodated about 60 guests, with COVID safety restrictions in place, including proof of vaccination. Takeout meals were provided to community members who were not vaccinated.

t’s always better to give than receive and that certainly is the case this week.

Our annual Christmas Greetings section is filled with stories and photos of charitable endevours, groups, youth and others, who have chosen to give back to those in need this Christmas.

In fact, there has been so much good will in our community, that we have several other pages throughout the paper with other stories of Christmas good cheer.

Leading the way is the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society who through their Seven Days of Giving, have handed out $50,000 in donations to seven organizations. And the generosity was spread out during the year to 10 other organizations and programs who received funding.

Deltassist is another group who are benefiting from the kindness of others.

The annual Toys and Tunes fundraiser at the Tsawwassen Legion raised a record haul of monetary donations and toys, which will ensure that Christmas morning is indeed brighter for those less fortunate in our community.

Youth have stepped up too – namely the Scouts and Girl Guides who have been out this week spreading holiday cheer with wonderful Christmas hampers for Meals on Wheels clients.

And Reach Child and Youth Development Society here in Ladner received a wonderful donation from Fraserway RV for its Gift of Speech campaign, as well, a donation of a fence from Premium Fencing’s charitable project also, Southlands hosted a toy drive last month and presented a major donation of toys.

Add in the All Saints Church cooking up a massive take-away community Christmas dinner and you have the makings of a wonderful season of giving here in our community.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help as we struggle to find peace of mind during the holidays

H

ere we go again, another Christmas is upon us and we are still struggling to control a deadly corona virus that has gripped us for two years.

Just when we thought we could breathe a bit and get out and explore the world, we are shuttered inwards again. As social animals, to be separated from family and friends, is unnatural and so is having our wings clipped.

The freedom to travel has once again been curtailed and it’s painful. So many plans dashed, so many reunions delayed. It’s hard to tally up the cost, because the heartbreaks are immense.

While the pandemic looms everywhere, life goes on.

Babies are born and people die. The virus waits for no one.

It doesn’t care that I got a good deal on a very large fresh turkey and want to share it with my family.

So how’s everyone mental health through all this?

I would suggest most of us are not doing well, especially

when restrictions change daily.

Living with uncertainty is stressful and it’s a challenge to stay hopeful that we can return to normal.

A letter from Delta Mayor George Harvie arrived Dec. 6.

In it our mayor addresses the impact the pandemic has had on our mental health and how it has exacerbated the opioid crisis. He wants us to know help is available.

Along with his letter is an impressive list of community services we can access. There’s shelter on a cold night or help with long-term housing, drug addiction services or food.

You may need to get out of

an abusive relationship, been a victim of a crime, or are a senior needing support. Mayor and council want you to know, “You are not forgotten, you are not alone and you matter.”

That’s a long list of needs, but it’s never been more important to ask for help, through the holidays and into 2022.

Like our mayor says in his letter, take that one step further and ask how your friends and colleagues are coping.

Sometimes just articulating our anxieties provides some relief.

For now we must be satisfied with finding the beauty in the safety of our homes and inner circle. Get out in nature as much as possible. Check on your neighbour, be patient and kind and stay safe.

Merry Christmas to all. May the new year bring good health and the love of family, friends and neighbours. We are ‘still’ all in this together.

A sincere shout-out to the lady in the white coat Editor: I was grocery shopping at Freshco the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 17 and realized as I was placing my groceries on the counter, I had left my wallet in my car, which was parked just outside across the driveway.

I told the checker that I would be right back, dashed across the driveway, got my wal-

let, and rushed back to the counter, just as the clerk had run my groceries through. He mentioned that the woman [in front of me] had offered to pay for my groceries. I asked him what I owed... Apparently it was not a joke, and that she had paid about $ 40 +/-.

I rushed out of the store to look for her, but she was nowhere to be found!

Whoever you are, thank you very much. It was so generous of you!

I was embarrassed that I was unable to find you to thank you.

I will never forget the gesture, and will definitely pass it on.

The Christmas spirit is alive and well in this fabulous town we call home.

South Delta food bank says thanks Editor: On behalf of the South Delta Food Bank, we want to express our heartfelt thank-you for your generosity again this year.

Where to start.

First, the kids at the local elementary schools that not only collected food, but when we came to pick up their donations, a lot of the students came and helped us load up our van!

And there are so many more to thank.

Businesses throughout Delta including the Delta Hospital, all donated

money and/or food.

Many residents in Delta also made private donations of funds and groceries.

Thank you!

I dare say this was probably the most we have ever collected in one year.

South Delta you have helped us to help the ones that need extra help, for all kinds of reasons: out of work, COVID-19-related, single parents, new immigrants, seniors on fixed incomes, and many more.

Our volunteers deserve a big shout out.

They have faithfully worked to make food bank possible all year long, working with all the new and changing regulations to make things run smoothly.

If anyone in South Delta has not been at our food bank, but is in genuine need, please come down and you will be pleasantly surprised by the helpfulness of our volunteers and the quality of food you will receive.

Fencing company pays tribute to former employee with donation project for REACH

The Reach Society Child Development Centre in Ladner is the beneficiary of Premium Fencing’s charitable project that was built in the memory of a dedicated employee.

It was back in August the 36-year-old company, through the generosity of Premium founder Brent Mitchell and CEO Simon Mitchell, installed fencing to keep children safe in the pre-school area of the Memorial Park building.

The value of the project is in excess of $6,000.

Last week, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the site to honour Premium employee James “Jimmy” Fabiszewski who passed away earlier this year.

In a letter to the Deltassist Family & Community Services Society, Mayor George Harvie said, “We under-

stand that the demand for counselling services has increased significantly during the pandemic and want to ensure that Delta’s seniors continue to have access to these important services. The requested funding will be included in Deltassist’s service agreement for 2022.”

Deltassist provides a

range of services across diverse needs for Delta residents and is the only full service social service agency in Delta.

The city three years ago began stepping up with additional grants for Deltassist when funding for its core senior programs from United Way was cut.

Fad toys may come and go, but Santa Claus will always be popular.

Leading up to Christmas, children delight in hearing tales of his elves making toys in the North Pole, his annual Christmas Eve trip around the globe in a flying sled pulled by reindeer, sack in tow, overflowing with presents.

Yet, as good as it makes us all feel, from the perspective of Christian faith, the story of Santa Claus is problematic.

At the risk of sounding like a Scrooge, and with all due respect to Virginia, I think it does us well to critically assess Santa’s’ core messages: presents are for the nice children, and a lump of coal awaits the naughty ones. Though I have never actually heard of a child having awoken to the sight of a lump of coal in a stocking, adults do make a point of impress-

ing upon children that Santa Claus dispenses gifts on the basis of behaviour.

This contrasts sharply with the Christian Gospel, which proclaims that Jesus Christ came into the world to forgive those who did not deserve to be forgiven, to save those who do not deserve to be saved. The gift of eternal life is given in spite of poor behaviour, not because of good

behaviour. And if the goal is to instill spiritual values in children, placing great emphasis on the acquisition of consumer goods, the wanting and getting of more “stuff,” is hardly a way.

No, I am not saying that the mall visits, beloved songs, or present deliveries stop, but may I gently suggest that the Santa Claus narrative is in need of some revising.

St. Nicholas was, after all, a real person—a follower of Jesus, a fourth century bishop who had a great heart for the poor and love for children. It is said that he distributed his substantial inheritance to the poor, and as a modest person, gave gifts not with a bellowing voice, drawing attention to himself, but quietly— as do countless people today, whose hearts are filled with generosity and compassion this time of year and throughout.

Salvation Army turns to mail campaign in South Delta this holiday season MARK BOOTH

The familiar ringing of bells outside your favourite South Delta store is noticeably absent this holiday season, but that hardly means the Salvation Army isn’t in need of donations.

The 156-year-old charitable organization had to take a different approach to reach out to the community this year and is

asking local residents to pay close attention to their mail.

Typically, the Salvation Army would have its dedicated volunteers outside designated stores for its familiar kettle campaign leading up to Christmas.

However, the regional coordinator, who organizes the kettles each year, is unavailable after undergoing emergency surgery. Another ongoing obstacle was the lack of

volunteers that has been a problem since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic nearly two years ago.

“What we decided to do in Delta this year is create a direct mail campaign instead. It’s a kettle in the mail kind of approach so people can mail in their donation. It explains very clearly in the letter why they are getting this letter and the circumstances involved,” explained Salvation Army spokes-

“Our officers have done a great job to pivot and about 11,000 (mail) pieces are being dropped in the community. If (residents) reply to that direct mail response the money is going to stay in the community.”

The parent advisory councils of 28 public and private schools in Delta recently received provincial gaming grants.

The province announced that kids in

B.C. will benefit from participation in a wide range of school activities thanks to Community Gaming Grants going to more than 1,300 advisory councils.

“We’ve been through so much over these past couple of years, and parents have been cham-

pions in our schools, working hard to keep kids connected with safe and rewarding extracurricular activities,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, in a news release. “Activities like these provide tremendous benefits for children’s health and

well-being, and they help keep students active and engaged in learning.”

In total, nearly $11 million is going to parent advisory councils and district parent advisory councils in the 2021/22 school year.

How tough will it be to find a parking spot within Ladner Village in the future?

That remains to be seen after Delta council approved Official Community Plan changes following a public hearing last week.

Nestled among the amendments, the reduced Mixed Use Ladner Waterfront Zone parking regulations are to be extended to all of Ladner Village.

It was also one of the many recommendations by the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee.

An economic analysis pointed to a need to consider parking rate reductions to ensure viability of redevelopment, so new parking standards are to be developed for new development projects.

The City of Delta is currently gathering feedback on an application for a proposed 150-unit non-market rental apartment building.

A redevelopment application was initially submitted two years ago for the Ladner Willows complex, located in the 5600-block of Ladner Trunk Road.

It’s a 40-unit townhouse complex operated

by Red Door Housing Society.

It had been in the news as several residents came

parking solutions, such as timed parking stalls or meters.

According to a consultant at the time, a clear parking strategy is needed for the redevelopment of the area because current capacity needs to be balanced with additional pressures that may come from redevelopment, particularly “destination” uses.

A Delta parking review years earlier found Ladner businesses were not in favour of pay parking as a management tool.

One of the policy goals of the new village plan states the revitalization should “focus on improvements to walking and biking facilities accessing the Village, and in particular within a 10-minute/800 metre distance, to encourage people to bike and walk into the Village area as a way to reduce parking needs.”

The city is also planning on holding a virtual public information meeting in place of an in-person meeting for the project.

Gentle density will be coming to Delta neighbourhoods.

Among the strategies identified in the city’s new Housing Action Plan, recently approved by council, is the creation of opportunities for gentle density to allow units like duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, coach homes, detached suites and townhouses in historically single-detached neighbourhoods.

It’s to provide more options for people hoping to move to and within Delta. while maintaining low density community character.

According to the city’s Housing Needs Assessment report, even though more apartments and townhouses are being built, Delta’s housing stock is still mostly single-detached houses.

With most of Delta’s housing over 45 years old and starting to come to the end of its useful life, the city has an opportunity to rethink future housing types to best meet residents’ needs.

The action plan notes, “Economic analysis showed that low density housing forms are unlikely to achieve significant affordability.

However, gentle density provides options to increase housing supply and to allow for aging in place within established neighbourhoods.”

The action plan also lists actions that can be undertaken in the short, medium and long-term term including the city could undertaking a design ideas competition on forms of gentle density that could be applied within Delta’s single-detached neighbourhoods.

Many areas of Delta that are zoned for duplexes do not currently permit them due to minimum lot area requirements, the report states.

Delta’s zoning bylaw also currently does not permit detached suites, so another action is for the city to identify opportunities to allow them and amend the zoning bylaw accordingly.

The actions also include a review infill single detached development policies and establishing a more harmonized approach between communities, including more consistent subdivision policies and potential additional infill options that may be possible without a need for subdivisions.

The Housing Action Plan is to be reviewed by staff and reported to council every two years

to ensure that implementation is progressing and that the work being done remains relevant.

Guiding the action plan, the Housing Needs Assessment will be updated within five years in accordance with provincial legislative requirements.

Delta’s action plan has been more than two years in the making, following the assessment, involving several rounds of community and development stakeholder consultations.

B.C. Housing Minister David Eby was at an affordable housing conference last week and warned of consequences for those municipalities that have yet to undertake housing needs assessments and plans to address the affordability crises.

Eby said his government could withhold funding for programs.

In November, the Tsawwassen Legion hosted its annual Toys and Tunes fundraiser for Deltassist. Bands Keelhaul and Southside Vibe played to an appreciative audience, while there was also an appearance by the Delta Police Pipe Band, a 50/50 draw, Toonie Toss and a silent auction. A record high of close to $6,000 in donations as well as more than 50 brand new toys were collected.

Last week Ken Leavy from the Royal Canadian Legion Tsawwassen Branch along with Danny Groening who is a drummer with the band Southside Vibe and Karen Wiggan to jointly present the donation to Deltassist. Thanks to the generosity of the community and the volunteers who hosted the event, Christmas will be a bit brighter for many less fortunate in our community.

Century Group Southlands recently hosted a Christmas at Southlands event where 800 registrants helped light an enormous Christmas tree and enjoyed carolling, festive crafts and community.

A toy drive for Reach Child and Youth Development Society was part of the event, where Southlands Grange manager Christine Grange gathered 100 toys. Development Manager Kristin Bibbs picked up the toys from the Southlands Grange Building last week.

“Reach has a long standing relationship with Century Group and we are so appreciative of this latest support through the Christmas at Southlands toy drive,” said Bibbs. “The toys will brighten many of our children’s Christmases this year.”

The Tsawwassen BIA has been lighting the trees and poles in Sunny Tsawwassen for more than 26 years.

It is a tradition that is well planned and expanded upon each year.

For many years the job of stringing the holiday lights was the heartfelt work of member volunteers, but for the past few years, the bulk of the work is done by contractors.

But once the crews are finished with the ladders and buckets of lights the holiday glow that we all enjoy is turned over to a very special holiday champion.

Randy Scott, owner of Randy’s Tire and Auto Centre, is the Tsawwassen BIA’s “keeper of lights.”

For almost as many years as the BIA has been hanging holiday lights Scott has been making sure the lights stay lit and if that means checking light bulbs and running

“Randy likes to make sure that every string is glowing,” said Michelle Barlow, executive director of the Tsawwassen BIA. “It is his daily habit to check the lights each night on his way home. It makes

the winter season special for our community and Tsawwassen residents appreciate his dedication.”

The Tsawwassen BIA represents more than 280 small businesses in its commercial district of Sunny Tsawwassen.

Working together with

their member businesses, the TBIA strives to enhance the ambience of its commercial district with street beautification and community enhancement projects like holiday lighting.

“We want our community to walk, gather and enjoy our commercial district,” said Barlow. “To enjoy the warmth and glow of the holiday lights while they ‘shop local and shop small’ in Sunny Tsawwassen. While the holiday season represents different things for each of us, we know the twinkling lights create a warmth of spirit that is enjoyed by everyone.”

A dazzling entrance tree greets residents and visitors as they enter Sunny Tsawwassen. The lights continue along 56th St. to Winskill and branch out along 12th Ave. to glow with lights of ruby reds, beautiful blues and emerald greens.

Fraserway RV donates $5,000 to REACH Gift of Speech

Reach Child and Youth Development Society had visitors with glad tidings for their holiday appeal last week.

Fraserway RV presented Reach executive director Renie D’Aquila, with $5,000 towards the Reach Gift of Speech campaign on Dec. 16.

Many children have speech deficits that can limit their future and it is critical to provide support as early as possible.

This recent donation brings the total amount

raised for speech therapy to $28,960 at time of submission.

Each year, Fraserway RV decides on a charity to support during the holiday season and Reach was also the recipient in 2017. This year, Fraserway RV also had the regional flooding event to contend with and still mounted their annual giving.

“Fraserway RV’s generosity will provide an amazing 100 hours of speech therapy for Reach

children,” said D’Aquila.

Because of the extraordinary outpouring of support from so many this year, Reach is able to expand the appeal goal to raise $37,500 and remove more children from the waitlist and provide the augmentative tools vital for speech therapy sessions. Funds raised this year to date will remove 58 children from the waitlist.

Carol Ships & Kickdrive Carollers warm hearts Merry Christmas Delta!

It was another amazing weekend for Ladner’s favorite four decade running Christmas event the 2021 Carol ships!

“Well the weather outside,” was…hostile on Friday night but that didn’t stop the tuff and spirited Ladner folks from coming out and singing along. We even spoke to a family that came all the way from Abbotsford. “Wow! What a night…Christmas has begun, this is truly wonderful,” one Ladner resident exclaimed.

For the second straight year, Boundary Bay families got a special visit from Santa before his big night.

With the reindeer resting up and given the proximity to Beach Grove, it only seemed fitting Santa rode in a golf cart on Saturday, Dec. 11 to greet kids and hand out treat bags while collecting donations for Deltassist. The two-hour journey covered several streets.

Santa’s initial appearance in 2020 was the idea of local resident Susan Frank after COVID-19 prevented children from visiting him at the shopping malls.

“I was walking my dog and my neighbor was saying it was a shame we don’t have a Santa this year and that’s when I said ‘my husband is Santa,’” laughed Frank.

After being initially asked to volunteer at a daycare operated by his brother, Don Frank has been putting on the red suit and beard for more than 15 years for a variety of events.

“It was only three days before Christmas, so I ran home to see what we could do,” recalled Susan.

Even with such short notice, families signed up on a community Facebook group, representing about 100 kids. Save-on-Foods graciously

donated candy for the treat bags and a Christmas tree, which was decorated and put on the back of a vintage flatbed truck provided by another neighbor, for Santa to do his ride on.

Susan had plenty of time to organize this year’s event that attracted even more registered families.

“It’s one of the reasons people love to live here. Little things like this happen,” Susan added. “Somebody did the pumpkin patch this year and revived that. There’s lots of second and third generation families. You got to love Boundary Bay and Christmas touches at the heart of all us. Big kids and little kids.”

Santa and his Elves jumped on the eBikes earlier this month paying a visit to local seniors’ residences.

Santa eBike ride brings message of peace and joy to seniors’ residences On Saturday, Dec. 11, Santa and his committed group of elves once again jumped on their eBikes for the second annual Santa eBike ride, visiting local seniors’ residences and bringing a message of joy, peace, and gratitude to the residents of

six homes.

Winding his way through Tsawwassen and Ladner, Santa and his team of sleigh-bikers sang, danced, and brought sweet gifts to the residents telling them that they have not been forgotten and that they

are not alone - Santa always remembers!

Special thanks goes to the committed group of volunteers - Rudolph Gord, Jen, Becky, Lisa, Ann, Richie, Tim, and Dylan - most of whom joined the ride for a second year in a row.

Just over five years ago, they were ball boys with the Delta Junior “A” Islanders.

Now, they are not only a big part of their future, but taking their lacrosse games to the NCAA level too.

Matthew Burt and Silas Richmond spent the summer of 2016 running out onto the Ladner Leisure Centre concrete floor during play stoppages and mopping up sweat if a player happened to take a tumble. It was a thankless task, but these keen youngsters got to be right at the bench as their hometown team enjoyed a historic run to the league title and the Minto Cup. It only grew their drive to be better players.

Richmond recently announced he is taking his field lacrosse career to the University of Albany. Now his long-time close friend and teammate is heading south too with Burt officially committing earlier this month to Limestone University, a South Atlantic Conference school in South Carolina.

“If I didn’t play out of Delta, I don’t think my passion (for lacrosse) would be the same,” smiled Burt. “The environment in Delta is pretty special. Just playing in front of the crowds in junior really gets you going.”

It’s also a tight-knit lacrosse community to the point where Burt didn’t have to look far for advice on what route he should go at the collegiate level.

He reached out to current Vancouver Warriors star Logan Schuss on what his experience was like at Ohio State University and 2016 Islanders standout Chase Fraser who played at the Division III NCAA level and now thrives in the NLL with Buffalo.

Burt had offers from a number of schools including Tampa, Wingate, Georgian Court and Indianapolis. It was through a lacrosse friend that Limestone’s interest was initiated as the Saints were looking for a left-handed midfielder.

“I took my time. I laid out all my offers on the table and decided which one I wanted to go to,” said Burt who will study business management. “It was a journey for sure, but an exciting journey.”

As much as lacrosse has been a big part of this multi-sport standout’s life, Burt’s desire two years ago was to take his basketball career to the post-secondary level. That was until COVID-19 hit and wiped out his entire Grade 12 season with the Delta Pacers.

“At that point I didn’t have any (recruiting film) for basketball,” said the 2021 DSS grad. “Lacrosse opened back up again and once I got a stick in my hands, I fell back in love again with the sport.”

That re-dedication included joining the Pro Caliber Lacrosse Academy, run

by Coquitlam native and former Denver University star Tyler Pace.

PCL not only offers elite training, but sends travel teams to recruiting tournaments throughout North America. That got the attention of U.S. college scouts for both he and Richmond, a couple of East Ladner kids that had indirectly pushed each other to become better players, including endless hours working on their stick skills at the Holly Park turf field.

“When we were younger we were battling each other for the best player in Delta. We didn’t realize it. We were just scoring goals together,” laughed Burt. “It just kept going back-and-forth. Silas definitely pushed me to where I am today.”

Just like his longtime friend and teammate Silas Richmond, Matthew Burt is taking his field lacrosse career to the NCAA level after signing earlier this month with Limestone University in South Carolina.

Next spring, Burt will be turning his attention to box lacrosse where he and Richmond hope to make the jump to the

Junior “A” Islanders after putting up big numbers last season with the Junior “B” tier one team.

Sun Devils earn first provincial ranking in 16 years MARK BOOTH

The South Delta Sun Devils are back in the B.C. senior girls basketball rankings for the first time in 16 years and they showed why at last week’s prestigious Howard Tsumura Invitational at the Langley Events Centre.

The 10th ranked Sun Devils were the surprise story of the 18-team event that was loaded with ranked teams from all tiers, producing three straight wins to reach the semi-finals before settling for a fourthplace finish.

They are playing at the AAAA’s top tier for the first time in years and captured a tournament in Victoria at Spectrum Secondary School before making their way to the LEC. It was back in 2017 when head coach Sharon Butler guided a number of her Grade 12s to a fourth-place finish at the B.C. Invitational Grade 8 Championships in South Surrey. However, this current

Maestro and Silvia Castaneda have been welcome additions from Spain. Maestro had 15 points in a tournament-opening 92-23 drubbing of Burnaby South.

The last time Mackenzie Campbell played high school basketball at the LEC she was a Grade 9 call-up with the Delta Pacers at the 2020 B.C. AAA Championships.

The 6-foot-1 Grade 11 took her athleticism to Tsawwassen where she was a first team all-star at the recent AAAA volleyball provincials in Nanaimo before shifting her focus to the basketball court. She will only get better as the season unfolds, as will Rachel Rosser, another volleyball standout who brings additional size (5-foot-11) to the line-up.

Alexa Kusel was an aged up standout at Southpointe Academy, but has since taken her impressive backcourt game south on 56th Street for her Grade 12 year. She was outstanding in the SunDevils’ thrilling 64-62 round of 16

victory over Abbotsford last Wednesday, producing a steal and the game-winning free throws in the dying seconds.

There is plenty of promising youth in the SDSS line-up too, including 5-foot-11 Grade 10 forward Kaija Rutledge who looks right at home playing at the senior level. She had a team-high 16 points in an entertaining 51-47 quarter-final win over MEI. Six-foot Grade 11 Kira Denney brings more size and athleticism to the post and shares minutes in the paint with 6-foot-2 senior Sophie Gower, a standout rower who is headed to Duke University.

After a pair of thrilling wins to reach the final four, the Sun Devils were brought back down to earth in a 95-42 semi-final loss to AAAA No. 1 ranked Terry Fox and an 83-59 setback to AA No. 1 Langley Christian.

Still, there are plenty of positives moving into 2022, including a promising path through February’s South Fraser playoffs to a first provincial tournament berth since 2005.

Marjorie Stephenson, 92 years of age, passed away in White Rock, BC on December 16th, 2021. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Robin in 2001. She is survived by her four children; Eileen, Mary, William and Robert, their loving spouses, six wonderful grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Marjorie’s ashes will be placed beside Robin’s in Qualicum Beach at St Mark’s Church.

BOND, Reuben Murray

KEMPTHORNE, William December 16, 2021 With heavy hearts, the family of Bill Kempthorne share news of his early passing this December 16th at the age of 56. He leaves behind his loving parents, Gladys and Arthur; sister Maryann; niece Nora; nephews Alec and Aidan; partner Tracy; and stepson Nate.

Born in Vancouver, raised in Ladner, and educated at the University of British Columbia (BSc Physics/ Math, B.Ed.), Bill was a talented teacher and technologist committed to innovation in public service. Beginning his work life in high school science, Bill moved to IT and Curriculum Standards for school districts and the Ministry of Education.

His varied career included employment at UBC, Apple Canada, Province of British Columbia, Island Health and his own enterprise, Maxwest.

Bill was honoured to work his final years with the outstanding individuals that make up the Saanich Police Department. To them, Bill’s family would like to express a special measure of gratitude. We appreciate, very much, the caring ways of this community−minded team.

A fan of many things, Bill was a proud Canadian and an enthusiastic British Columbian. A pilot with wings earned through the Air Cadet program, Bill loved to be in the skies above and was committed to teaching and leadership in this area. Bill greatly appreciated the outdoors in his home province. An avid cyclist, kayaker and traveller, Bill enjoyed being at−large and chronicled his ventures as an excellent photographer and writer. Bill only strayed from his devotion to BC in his adoration of the Edmonton Elks CFL team and the community that supports them.

Bill was always learning and tracking the trends in aviation and other technologies. He enjoyed volunteering and sharing his knowledge with diverse communities. One who uplifted others, Bill was too modest to absorb status from his fans easily. Comradery was Bill’s preferred way of being.

To his many friends near and far, we thank you for being a part of the rich fabric of Bill’s life.

The family will observe funeral services this December. A further celebration of Bill’s life will be announced in the coming year.

Our family and the community mourn the loss of Reuben Murray Bond, who passed away December 7th, 2021. Murray was born on April 18th, 1944 in Calgary Alberta, but those who knew him know his “real” birthday was March 17th when he celebrated his years of sobriety - this year marking 35 years.

Recently, Murray lost his daughter Vanessa. He is survived by his four children; James (Fay), Tara (Craig), Kelly (Ferlita), Amanda (Mike), and his grandchildren; Emma, David, Jack, Henry, Chris, Georgia, and Anika, and two sisters Karen and Peggy.

Murray was an active member of his community who dedicated his life to service and his church, Life Church, formerly Life Church. He has spent the last two decades finding avenues to contribute in service to his communities.

But God and the medical community were close to his heart. His final wishes were to donate his body to science.

JONASSON, Fay Joline (nee Taylor) It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Fay Joline Jonasson (nee Taylor).

Born November 3rd, 1931 in South Wales, Passed away November 21, 2021 in Surrey, B.C. Predeceased by husband Howard 2014. Survived by children Patty and Mike (Gill) and grandchildren Katherine and Clayton.

Fay was an avid gardener and loved playing cards with friends and family.

She was a poet, a singer and had a deep love for her family, dogs and birds.

She loved a good laugh!

Fay will be deeply missed.

DuBOURT, Margaret Lynn (Thomson) February 11, 1946 - December 7, 2021

Lynn DuBourt, age 75, passed away on December 7th, 2021 in Delta, BC with her two daughters by her side.

Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, the eldest daughter of Howe and Margaret Thomson, she moved to Edmonton, AB at the age of 6 months. The family then moved to Summerland, BC when Lynn was 12 years old. Lynn spent the majority of her life in her beloved sunny Summerland where she raised her two daughters and worked as a bank teller at the local CIBC. During her time there, she was wellknown for her kindness and friendly smile.

Although she experienced many health challenges throughout much of her adult life, she persevered with quiet determination.

Lynn will be dearly missed by her daughters, Danielle (Andy) Gower and Christie DuBourt; her grandchildren, Maggie Gower, Nate Gower, Tristan Evans and Benjamin Evans; her sisters Lesley Carmody and Sheila Thomson; and her close friends.

A celebration of life will be held in Summerland, BC on a date yet to be determined.

TAMBOLINE, Margaret On December 14, 2021 Margaret Emma Tamboline passed away peacefully after bringing joy and care to her family for over 95 years. Marg was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Ellen, and by her siblings Florence, Reginald, and Donald. She is survived by her sister, Thelma, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews and great great nieces/nephews.

Marg was born in South Vancouver on April 9, 1926 and spent her formative years in both Vancouver and Westham Island in Ladner. She built a 40-year career as a Legal Secretary working for various firms in the Lower Mainland before retiring in 1985.

Marg had an inquisitive mind and was always wanting to learn new things and to figure out how everything worked. She was a woman of faith who loved travel, photography, reading, history and especially her family. These passions lead to her becoming the family historian and, in 2008, the release of her life’s work entitled, “My Family Story”.

This work is a legacy she has passed down to all future generations of our family.

Donations in memory of Lynn may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Augustine House in Ladner, where Marg lived for the last 10 years.

GOUGEON, Leo Joseph Wallie June 22, 1952 to December 12, 2021 It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our dearly loved Leo Joseph Wallie Gougeon from his brave battle with cancer. Just like his death, with all experiences in life Leo managed his illness with strength and grace and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible.

On his final day, he was surrounded by his wife and children, who he adored more than anything else in the world.

Leo’s greatest achievement was being the best husband, father, and papa. He is survived by his true soul mate, Marilynn, three daughters, Kimberley (Darren), Stacey, Niki (Brett), grandchildren, Markus, Matteo, Maddox, Gracie and grand pups, Ryder, Murphy, and Maddie.

Leo was a hero to us all and taught us to enjoy every moment life has to offer.

His cheerful disposition, unwavering positive attitude and bright smile will remain with us forever.
