The Delta Ice Hawks are hoping to soar to a Junior B provincial championship on home ice this coming April.

On Tuesday, the Ice Hawks, along with the City of Delta, were named hosts of the 2022 Cyclone Taylor Cup from April 7 to 10 featuring the Ice Hawks and the champions of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) and the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League.

All games will be at the Ladner Leisure Centre with six round robin games, followed by bronze and gold medal games.

“The Ice Hawks are honoured to be hosting this season’s Cyclone Taylor Cup,” said Eduard Epshtein, owner and president of the Ice Hawks. “We are honoured to welcome the teams and

stands!”

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ice Hawks were selected to host the 2021 Cyclone Taylor Cup. Once the event was cancelled, the team immediately indicated their interest in hosting the event in the future. After consultation with BC Hockey and the three leagues involved in the tournament, the 2022 Cyclone Taylor Cup was again awarded to the Ice Hawks.

“Hockey everywhere was affected by the pandemic,” PJHL commissioner Trevor Alto said.

“We had two seasons cut short and lost two Cyclone Taylor Cups. It was disappointing for everyone, but particularly for the Ice Hawks. However, this did not deter their organization or their desire to host this tournament. They were unwavering in their willingness to pick up where they left off and to host a first-class event in our new environment.”

Delta council on Monday agreed to advance a major redevelopment proposal on Ladner Village to a public consultation process.

At a workshop on Oct. 21, council received preliminary information on the application for a sixstorey, mixed-use building at 4989 Bridge Street and 4905 to 4915 Elliot Street.

It would have 14,660-square-feet of commercial space on the ground floor, 231 parking spaces on the first and second floors and 114 residential strata units on the upper floors.

The development also features a courtyard on the third level that would provide a common outdoor amenity space for residents.

The project would involve consolidation of four properties, which includes the Dunbar Lumber site, as well as the closure of a lane to create the 59,180-squarefoot development.

Planning staff also noted the application is at the preliminary stage and aspects may change in response to the detailed staff review, input from civic advisory committees, council and community comments.

The applicant proposes a design that responds to early development patterns of the historic Ladner Townsite plan, according to city planning staff.

Community Plan (OCP) designation for the site allows for mixed-use developments up to twoand-a-half storeys.

A staff report notes that the proposal has been submitted in light of the recommendations of the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee and the city’s ongoing work on the Ladner Village Revitalization Project, which includes updating the area plan for the village.

The committee recommended that buildings up to six storeys can be permitted in some parts of Ladner Village to increase mixed-use and provide opportunities for a variety of new housing.

The proposed development site is within an area recommended for six storeys.

The report also notes community engagement found mostly support for increasing building heights at select locations.

The applicant submitted the proposal in August following council’s endorsement of a draft land use plan for the village and the application is consistent with that plan.

Community Planning Director Marcy Sangret told council Monday that the proposed bylaw amendments to change the OCP would be coming back to council and

a public hearing will be held before the end of this year.

Those proposed land use designation changes would be coming well ahead of any consideration for preliminary approval of the redevelopment application, so the application is not jumping ahead of that OCP process, she said.

The redevelopment application would still require a public hearing even if the OCP amendments are approved.

A staff report to council earlier this year notes an analysis indicates that heights of approximately four-to-six-storeys would be required in order to encourage redevelop-

ment of properties in the village.

The higher density areas would permit up to six storeys with commercial on the ground floor and up to five storeys of residential above.

In certain areas adjacent to lower height designations or fronting a street, a four-storey maximum designation would help to “step down” development and provide a sensitive transition, the report explains.

Other areas, such as along the edge of the Chillukthan Slough, the area on the south side of Georgia Street and the area on the south side of 48 Avenue, are not proposed to change.

Delta Police Board on Wednesday, Oct. 20, Chief Neil Dubord noted options to alleviate delays are being considered as dispatch wait times have become a major concern throughout the province.

The DPD established service standards for E-Comm to answer 88 per cent of emergency calls within 10 seconds and 80 per cent of non-emergency calls within three minutes.

“Unfortunately, E-Comm has not consistently been able meet the established service standards. The DPD is aware that some Delta citizens have experienced long wait times to speak with an E-Comm call-taker, especially on the non-emergency line and have expressed their concerns to the DPD about the delays. E-Comm has noted that insufficient budgeting and associated staffing levels have contributed to the delays,” Dubord explained in his report to the board.

for Delta can be met, providing timely response to a citizen, whether they are in an emergency or nonemergency situation.”

Noting E-Comm has a different evaluation of response times in Delta because of the department’s “no call too small” policy, Dubord told the board the DPD is hoping to meet weekly with E-Comm representatives to review the emergency call centre’s pressures and complexities to find solutions.

Promoting more use the department’s online reporting tool for nonemergency calls is one

idea.

Asked about Delta establishing its own dispatch service, Dubord acknowledged it’s a good idea as the DPD would have the resources, including technology, to have its own call centre for non-emergency situations.

The DPD would like to discuss having its own system with E-Comm, however, a stumbling block would be financing as well as the city having a contract with E-Comm which runs for several more years, he added.

Mayor George Harvie has sent a letter to Health

Minister Adrian Dix conveying concerns about E-Comm 9-1-1 wait times.

The letter notes how Oliver Gruter-Andrew, E-Comm president and CEO, last month released a statement linking 9-1-1 wait times to staffing levels at BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), noting that the risk to public safety from delays is of serious and growing concern to his organization.

The risk to public safety as a result of delays due to call-taking and dispatch staffing shortages is also of serious and growing concern to Delta council, Harvie wrote.

Also pointing out ambulance staffing issues in Delta and Richmond, Harvie said while he recognizes and appreciates the workload of paramedics, response times must “consistently and reliably meet applicable standards and resident needs.”

The province this year announced it will be funding new full-time paramedics and full-time dispatchers as part of a plan to improve call waits to 9-1-1 for ambulance service.

Ambiguities within the province’s own laws regarding odours is leaving the regional district with little ability to properly deal with a controversial East Ladner composting operation.

That’s according to Delta Mayor George Harvie who sent a letter to George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, requesting a full audit of the GFL Envirosmart compost facility on 72 Street.

Harvie also requested the Environmental Management Act be amended to define odorous air contaminants and better measurement standards.

“Despite significant upgrades at the GFL facility, our community

continues to be impacted by odour from this operation,” said Harvie in his letter. “Metro Vancouver has been unsuccessful to date in regulating odourous air emissions from this facility using its delegated authority under the BC Environmental Management Act. The ambiguities within the Act as it relates to odour have, in our view, resulted in the BC Environmental Appeal Board striking down provisions in the air quality permit for the GFL facility that would have allowed Metro Vancouver to monitor and measure odourous emissions from the facility.

“We respectfully request that the necessary regulatory amendments be made to clearly include odour as an ‘air contaminant’ and to

adopt odour measurement protocols as has been done in other jurisdictions, including the European Union.”

Metro Vancouver issued an air quality permit for the new facility in 2018, paving the way for a transition to a new fully-enclosed composting facility, which was completed in September 2020.

Complaints decreased for a while following the opening, however, this June both Metro Vancouver and Delta began receiving more complaints from residents in East Ladner.

Between June and July 2021, there were approximately 200 complaints submitted to Metro Vancouver.

A report to city council notes that based on the observations of Delta and Metro staff, as well

as information provided

by GFL representatives, the odour issues over the summer appear to have arisen from odorous material being stored outside.

Delta’s city manager issued a letter to the company requiring odour issues to be promptly and effectively addressed.

GFL’s response described a number of remedial actions taken, including addressing some deficiencies in the new composting building, optimizing the process, redirecting food waste to another facility as an interim measure, and hauling residual large pieces screened to a compost facility in the Interior.

The operation also committed to work with Metro Vancouver to engage neighbouring residents.

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough is among the three new inductees into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame.

The Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (CFPDP) announced its 2021 inductees on Thursday, Oct. 21 which includes Qualtrough, as well as world-class athlete Vivian Berkely, and passionate advocate for the deaf community Frank Folino. They join the prestigious ranks of 117 others who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame the past 28 years.

The Canadian Disability Hall of Fame recognizes extraordinary individuals who, through their outstanding work and achievements, have

significantly enriched the quality of life for people with disabilities. They have also made a profound difference in their communities, our country and internationally.

“Over the years, so many incredible Canadians have been nominated and it is always a remarkably difficult process to choose just a handful of inductees,” said The Hon. David Crombie, chair, Canadian Disability Hall of Fame.

“We applaud all of the exceptional achievements of the nominees and inductees, for together they are helping to make Canada an even greater country.”

Qualtrough is being inducted into the builder category.

According to a press release from the CFPDP Qualtrough is a triple threat - lawyer, volunteer,

and Paralympic swimmer - no wonder she is leading change and advancing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in Canada. Qualtrough has shown significant service through sport and volunteerism, including with the International Paralympic Committee. Visually impaired since birth, her athletic achievements include three Paralympic and four World Championship medals.

Qualtrough said she was surprised when she learned the news.

“It’s very touching and quite lovely,” she said.

“It’s personal. You are part of a group and you have been advocating for people. It feel special when you are recognized by your peers and by people who you are trying to help.”

Qualtrough retains portfolio in new Liberal cabinet

There are new faces and shuffled portfolios in the new federal Liberal cabinet, but Delta’s member of Parliament (MP) is a familiar face in a familiar position.

Carla Qualtrough will continue in her role as Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion.

She was sworn-in alongside the other 38 ministers on Tuesday in Ottawa as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named his cabinet.

Trudeau has added nine new faces, dropped three and moved most other senior ministers to new posts with only 10 staying put.

On Monday, Qualtrough was joined by her family as she was sworn-in once again as MP. “In 2015, Deltans entrusted me to repre-

sent them in the House of Commons. Today, I had the honour of being sworn in a third time as the MP for Delta. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to work hard for our community and for Canada,” she said in a post on social media.

Late Tuesday, the Optimist caught up for a quick phone interview with Qualtrough.

She said she is very pleased to be continuing with the same portfolio.

“I think there is lots of exciting work to do in this portfolio. Certainly top of mind is finishing the fight against COVID, supporting workers, supporting businesses, transitioning to supporting different kinds of benefits and then, near and dear to my heart, is I get to keep the disability portfolio,” she said. “So continuing work on the Canada Disability Benefit and the

Disability Employment Strategy. There is some really important and significant language in our platform on disability that you have never seen in a party’s platform before and I get to actually make that happen, so I’m very excited.”

Parliament will resume sitting in the House of Commons on Nov. 22.

Between now and then, Qualtrough will be in lots of cabinet meetings and helping to get new ministers up to speed and setting the agenda.

“I think he [Trudeau] said it best when he said it is a reinvigorated and excited group that is looking forward to leading the country,” she said.

“Moving people around, and getting some fresh blood and perspectives reminds us all of why we are in this business. I think it is a healthy way forward and this is a good team.”

B.C. to begin offering COVID-19 booster shots to everyone in the province New campaign launches this month, running through to May 2022

B.C. is set to jump aboard the booster bandwagon in a bid to stave off further COVID-19 infections.

The province said Tuesday the new boostershot campaign will take a phased approach for those 12 and older, beginning this month and extending through to May 2022.

These third doses will be made available to British Columbians who already received their second doses at least six to eight months prior.

The timing will depend on recipients’ ages and risk levels, while vaccines will also be made available concurrently for children five to 11, pend-

ing approval from Health Canada.

Higher-risk populations are considered to be those ages 70 years and older, as well as Indigenous populations in rural locations, residents in long-term-care and assisted-living, the immunosuppressed and health-care workers who received their initial two doses at a shorter interval than the general population.

Some of these groups began receiving boosters last month and the new campaign will focus on others in those groups through to December.

The government estimates it will begin administering boosters in January to those considered clinically extremely vulnerable

(but not immunosuppressed), health-care workers in long-termcare and assisted-living, health-care workers in the community and then the remaining general population 12 and older.

While mass vaccine clinics were a staple during the initial campaign, pharmacies will be drawn into the fold to help administer the booster shots.

Last week in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled new booster recommendations for recipients of the Pfizer Inc., Moderna Inc. and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. The AstraZeneca plc vaccine has not been approved for use south of the border, although other countries, such

as Canada and the U.K. have been using it throughout their respective vaccine campaigns.

But British Columbians who initially received the AstraZeneca vaccine will only be offered mRNA vaccines — either Pfizer or Moderna.

Mixing and matching vaccines has been an accepted practice in B.C. and Canada throughout much of the vaccination campaign, but was only given the nod in the U.S. earlier this month.

Invitations for the booster shot will be sent to those registered through the Get Vaccinated program.

Drop-in vaccinations will not be permitted for people wishing to get their second dose or their booster dose.

Op-Ed: Quit your witching about Halloween and let kids be kids JULIE MACLELLAN

Ah, the witching season is nearly upon us once again.

And by “witching,” I really mean a rhyming word involving Grumpy McGrumpersons and Cranky McCrankypantses who just can’t keep from bad-mouthing children everywhere on Halloween.

You know the people I mean: the ones who put on their porch lights, have their bowl of candy ready, answer the door for trick-or-treaters and then grumble that the trick-or-treaters just didn’t live up to their standards.

My message to those people?

Cut. It. Out. Allow me to address some of their standard complaints in more depth, so we can all understand why we need to nip those complaints in the bud.

Complaint 1: “Children are so rude.”

This alleged “rude” behaviour generally focuses on the mortal sin of – gasp! shock! horror!

– forgetting to say “thank you.”

I get it. I’m a parent. I have been teaching my kid to say thank-you since before she even knew what it meant. Most of us have. But here’s the thing: Halloween is a scary, huge, momentous night for many children.

It’s full of strangers and darkness and spooky decorations and sensory overload on all fronts. For many children, the act of saying “thank-you” to every single person they encounter throughout the evening is an enormous undertaking.

They may be shy or socially anxious. They may be neurologically atypical or have some kind of behavioural condition you can’t see. They may be overstimulated and overexcited and just

plain forget sometimes.

It doesn’t matter.

Not saying “thank you” doesn’t make them rude.

It makes them children.

Just smile, tell them to have fun, and move on.

Complaint 2: “Children are so greedy.”

This comment usually comes from people who hold a big bowl of candy out towards a child at the door and are then shocked when said child wants to grab a handful of it. Remember these are children who are, as mentioned above, overstimulated by the whole situation and undoubtedly gobsmacked by the idea that on this one day of the year, we tell them it’s a good idea to knock on strangers’ doors and get free candy. (Seriously, the whole set-up is more than a little weird, when you think about it.)

If you’re cool with kids grabbing candy by the handful (and honestly, I often am – I always buy way too much candy

anyhow and they’re just saving me unnecessary caloric intake), then fine: Hold out the bowl and let them go to town.

But if you want them to take just one, you have precisely two options: Tell them to choose just one, or simply select one yourself and put it directly into the child’s bag.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy, as my nineyear-old would say.

Complaint 3: “They’re too old.”

This one’s a classic, and it can be directed at any child who isn’t visibly under the age of eight.

First of all, remember that you really have no idea how old a child actually is. There are tall 10-year-olds out there who could easily pass for teenagers.

And second? Yes, there will be some people coming to your door who are, in fact, teenagers. For my money, that’s a cool and awesome and wonderful thing, and I hope they

keep coming.

We don’t want teens to spend all their time on screens. We don’t want them partying and drinking with friends. We don’t want them cooped up indoors. So, frankly, if a teenager wants to roam the neighbourhood with some friends trying to cling to one last vestige of childhood fun? We should be encouraging that, not scolding them for it.

Plus, cut them some slack. Being a teenager has been one helluva tough job over the past year-and-a-half, what with the social isolation and lack of activities that have come along with the pandemic.

Just for one night, maybe let them be kids for a little while longer.

And if you really can’t stand it? Then turn off your porch light, keep your door firmly closed and eat all the damn candy alone in the dark.

We’ll all be better off.

Have a fun and safe Halloween without the fireworks

bout 20 years ago, we spent some time at a friend’s cabin on Sproat Lake on our way to our usual summer vacation spot on Hornby Island.

The setting at the lakefront was idyllic. A meandering trail through the pines from the cabin led to the lakefront dock and fire pit. On our second to last day, we were sitting on the dock and watched in amazement as thick black clouds approached us at incredible speed, eating the blue of the afternoon sky.

Fierce rain began and we all headed back indoors to the comfy confines of decades old furniture

and the crackling of a hastily made fire.

Our beloved Golden Retriever Stella came in as well. Not long after, the thunder and lightning accompanied the rain in an awesome spectacle that humans appreciate, but most dogs absolutely do not. Their sensitive ears can actually become painful when faced with loud sounds such as the thunder that now appeared to be directly overhead.

As the storm lingered above us, and as the windows shook with each deafening clap, poor Stella was trying her best to hide, shaking and whimpering, behind the toilet in the small bathroom. We tried our best

to console her, but she was fraught with fear.

Eventually, things settled down, or so we thought. Stella had stopped shaking and appeared calm. It had been at least an hour so I let her outside to have a

pee. As is often the case with thunderstorms, they can be cyclical in nature, particularly in and around the Alberni Inlet.

When round two of the storm returned, it was too late. Successive and sudden deafening jolts of thunder sent Stella off in the approaching twilight. She ran up the road to the highway and would not listen to our pleas to return. I jumped in the car and tried to find her. She had a good head-start and was a fast hound. A few minutes down the road, I encountered a lineman who was repairing a downed hydro line. I asked if he had seen a fast moving retriever. He had. Stella made a turn on the high-

way and was headed toward Port Alberni. I drove for a while, scared and nervous as darkness quickly approached.

Finally, I gave up and came back to the cabin.

The plan for the next day was to post signs in the hopes that someone may have seen her.

Thankfully, Stella made it back to our lakefront neighbourhood and took shelter with a lovely lady about a block away.

We were reunited.

I love a good fireworks display just like the next guy, but this story is a reminder that fireworks and firecrackers can be terribly frightening for dogs.

Remind your kids to keep this in mind. Have a fun and safe Halloween!

Ideas and solutions for Beach Grove Golf Club Editor: This letter is asking Delta council to support Beach Grove Golf Club in a different way, and to remind residents about the public hearing to be held on Nov. 2.

The Beach Grove Golf Club needs the financial input of the development planned for 16th Ave. to cover a mortgage. We want this club to remain a vibrant part of our community.

The difficulty is that the 16th Ave. site is fully treed with plantings that have probably been in place since the course opened in the 1920’s. As well as these trees, there are large cottonwoods and other species that

are growing from wild land and the ditch next to the groomed area. All of these trees absorb the winter rains and groundwater.

Without them, the water that drains from upper Tsawwassen into the flood plain of the Beach Grove/Boundary Bay residential area will be greater in volume.

The community will be more prone to a higher water table and the likelihood of flooding surrounding properties, which would be a recipe for a class action civil liability suit.

It is easy to forget that Beach Grove is on a flood plain, and in the past was heavily treed.

When the tunnel went in and Tsawwassen was developed they did not have access to our current level of knowledge about the consequences of large tree removal.

There are solutions that could help with both Beach Grove Golf Club and the community. The land could be purchased by the city for future parkland or green space.

Beach Grove Golf Club could sell or develop another portion of their land that would have less of an environmental impact or the community could start a GoFundMe page or brainstorm other ways of helping the club.

Better transport infrastructure must be part of port expansion

Editor: Re: Roberts Bank Terminal 2 I am all in favour of development, however, it must come with commensurate infrastructure investment by the federal government.

community is good, but what about all the extra trucks loading up the highways? Specifically, Highway 17 between Highway 99 and Highway 1 are already at capacity. The choke point at the Alex Fraser Bridge is being addressed, but

what about at Tannery Road and at 104th? Also, all the additional traffic on Highway 1 east of the junction of Highway 17?

Investment in this transport infrastructure must be part of the port expansion.

Editor: On Oct. 18, after shopping at Kin’s in Ladner, I unknowingly dropped my wallet in the parking lot.

When I realized it, I went back and could not find it. I went home to do

the onerous task of cancelling credit cards, bank cards, drivers’ license etc.

A couple hours later, a police officer came to my home with my wallet intact. A person who wished to be anonymous turned it into the com-

munity police office.

To that person, I want to say thank you for your honesty. In order to pay your kindness forward, I have made a monetary donation to the food bank.

Editor: We recently moved to Ladner after more than 30 years of living in Vancouver.

Although Vancouver is a great city with a lot to offer, it is becoming bogged down with the constant traffic and the never ending construction.

Ladner, being only a

half hour from the big city, is just the perfect scenario for living. I could go on about its attributes, but you already know what they are.

But what has been the most pleasant surprise about living in Ladner these last two months, has been the friendliness of its citizens. Perhaps this is true of most small

communities, but I don’t believe so. How refreshing it is to be on a walk and actually have someone look at you and say hello, or be shopping in the village and be greeted by a warm smile.

So hats off to Ladner, you are a wonderful throw-back in time, in neighbourly friendliness!

Editor: On Friday night, Oct. 22, I attended a high school football game between our two Delta teams – the South Delta Sun Devils and the Seaquam Seahawks under the lights at John Oliver Park.

After these players had to miss last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this evening gave the players the opportunity to play Friday Night Lights high school football. During my time coaching at South Delta we tried to obtain John Oliver Park for Friday night games, but were not successful.

I think that it is very

important for both South Delta and Seaquam coaches and high school principals to work together and reserve this field for both teams to play their Friday night home games next season. I am quite sure that BC High School Football can accommodate a schedule that would have these two teams playing their home games at John Oliver Park on alternating Friday nights.

The field at John Oliver is in fairly good shape but the area at the sideline and near the bleachers and concession was quite wet, which should be an easy fix. I note that

the Delta Longhorns also use this park but I do not think that they play on Friday nights.

In attendance on this evening, there were over 100 fans – parents of players and students from both schools. The entire experience was appreciated by all. The concession stand was busy and the whole atmosphere was incredible.

In addition to securing John Oliver field for Friday night games, I also would like to see the game between these two schools as their last game of the season to start a true rivalry between them.

Fraser Health Home Support teams are our heroes Editor: I would like to draw the community’s attention to Fraser Health Home Support teams here in Delta. I feel they truly have been the unsung heroes during the pandemic.

For the last 19 months as doctor’s offices and clinics closed their doors, and hospitals rightfully reduced some patients, these women and men have filled the gaps in medical care.

Our personal experience with them started the day my husband was

released from hospital after major surgery. They visited us every day, even on weekends and holidays to change dressings, provide help and advice, including removing staples from his surgical sites (a job traditionally done in the doctor’s office).

As time went on, the nutritionists and occupational therapists also were involved. They arranged for any equipment that suited his needs to be provided. As my husband’s health waxed and waned, so did the support they gave. When things were

going well, they stayed in touch with weekly phone calls, and when we needed help they were right there with us. Eventually the team included the palliative team and counsellor.

The title support team is certainly appropriate as they all worked in concert with us to support my husband and myself through this journey.

Without them, he would not have been able to spend the last 19 months at home. For this, we are truly grateful.

That’s B.C. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Rob Fleming’s response to Delta South MLA Ian Paton’s recent criticism about the government’s business case for the George Massey Tunnel

replacement project, a new eight-lane immersed tunnel which will cost more than $4 billion.

Paton noted elements of the business case, including value calculations, had been redacted.

“This government nixed the plan for a 10-lane bridge to replace the aging tunnel, and is proceeding with an eightlane tunnel — but John Horgan and the NDP refuse to release the full

business case which will show taxpayers exactly why they’re paying more and getting less. Our former government already spent $100 million to get the bridge project going, which is now going to waste thanks to the NDP. The original total cost of the bridge was going to be $2.6 billion, and this new tunnel project will be $4.2 billion with fewer lanes,” Paton said.

“People want to know

why the tunnel is preferred over a bridge. They want to see the risk analysis and the value-formoney analysis. They’re wondering whether this project has any chance of getting through the federal environmental assessment process. But thanks to the NDP, the information is blacked out and is being hidden from the public.”

Fleming told the Optimist people want to see congestion relief at the George Massey Tunnel without having to pay unfair tolls, and that is what his government is doing.

“The new toll-free, eight-lane tunnel is the right project for the region, and is supported by local mayors and First Nations, and is actually less expensive than an eight-lane bridge. It will get people and goods where they need to go faster and safer and, for the first time ever, will provide opportunities for those who cycle or walk,” said Fleming.

“Redactions to the business case are made independently by the professional public service to protect the interests of taxpayers.

By redacting sensitive information that could influence bids, government is ensuring integrity in the procurement process and the best value for money for the people of B.C. This is the same process that has been in

place for previous major projects like Evergreen and Broadway. As with all major projects, at the end of construction, full details of final costs will also be released.

“Our government’s approach differs from the previous government who publicly announced they would be building an unwanted bridge, without any business case. Only afterwards did they do a business case to back up the political decision they’d already made which, when released two years later, contained the same redactions as the current business case.”

Paton countered Fleming’s claim the Liberal government didn’t have a business case for the previous 10-lane bridge project is untrue.

The NDP government this summer announced that a new eight-lane immersed tunnel is to replace the current tunnel, a project that has a 2030 completion schedule.

The George Massey Tunnel is to be decommissioned once the new tunnel opens.

WHL Giants pay tribute to Tsawwassen’s Elizabeth Toigo Juinor team to wear commemorative “ET” patch on their jerseys this season MARK BOOTH

The Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants will be paying tribute to one of their greatest fans and a huge contributor to the Delta community.

Longtime local resident Elizabeth Toigo passed away Sept. 24, just a month shy of her 88th birthday.

The mother of majority team owner Ron Toigo and grandmother of team vice-president Peter Togio, she opened the doors to her Tsawwassen home each year (up until 2020) to host the team’s annual Christmas Party. It was an event she always looked forward to and she thoroughly enjoyed following the team over the years, highlighted by the Memorial Cup win in 2007.

To honour her mem-

ory, the Giants will be wearing a commemorative “ET” patch on their jerseys to signify her many contributions to the club over the last 20 seasons. The patch was unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Tsawwassen Springs.

Her obituary, that was published in the Oct. 14 Optimist, recognized her extraordinary generosity as a major donor to many causes including Delta Hospital.

“She avoided the spotlight in her own way, preferring to do things for others. She kept her growing family stocked with her legendary chocolate chip cookies, and, every year, made a special point of taking each of her grandchildren Christmas shopping. Christmas Day was always a special time with the extended family gathered around the

‘THIS is Your Voice’ community forum aims to address mental health in Delta

The Harmony Initiative Society will host its second annual community forum ‘THIS Is Your Voice’ on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at North Delta Centre for the Arts in North Delta.

Moderated by awardwinning TV Host and producer Fiona Forbes, this round-table style discussion will bring together select community representatives comprised of concerned citizens, local leaders, mental health experts and government officials.

The aim is to encourage proactive conversation on a safe, neutral platform surrounding the

importance of mental health in Delta.

“We need to shine a light on mental health issues - no one should struggle in silence,” said Forbes. “I am humbled and honoured to be a part of this important conversation with THIS Is Your Voice.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the general public will be able to attend via livestream on The Harmony Initiative Society’s Facebook page.

Rescue prompts warning to hunters about quickly moving tides Delta Police, Delta Fire and the Canadian Coast Guard were recently able to help two hunters in distress who’d become trapped in marshlands.

According to Delta Police, two men, who were hunting ducks out

at Brunswick Point in the 2600 block of River Road West, got lost in the darkness and tall reeds in the evening of Oct. 21.

Hunting is legal within certain areas of Delta, with applicable hunting licenses and permits.

As water levels had risen the hunters made a smart decision and called 9-1-1. At that point the water level was approximately 1.5 metres high, and the hunters did not feel they would be able to make it back to safety.

Police attended the area, and requested assistance from both the Coast Guard and the Delta Fire Department.

“Our officers walked 1.5 km through marshland and reeds about six to eight feet high.

Fortunately they were able to locate the hunters with their flashlights, getting within 100 metres of them” says Insp. Guy Leeson, head of Operations for Delta Police.

“With the assistance of the Coast Guard search lights and their flashlights police were able to highlight a safe pathway for the hunters through the marshlands, and then escorted them back to safety.”

The Delta Fire Department checked on the hunters and confirmed they did not need any medical attention.

The hunters both had valid hunting licenses.

“We’re very pleased

our officers were able to locate the hunters quite quickly, despite challenging circumstances,” added Leeson. “We’re flagging this incident for the public, as the ending could have easily been very different.

Hunters – especially those new to the area need to be aware of the time, when the sun sets, and that tides here can move quickly. It’s very important to be properly prepared.”

Pedestrian killed in River Road collision A 60-year-old woman was killed in a collision with a vehicle in the 7400 block of River Road last Friday morning (Oct. 22).

Delta Police were notified of the collision at 6:52 a.m.. The investigation revealed that a pedestrian was in the midst of crossing River Road in this location, when she was struck by a vehicle. Emergency Health Services were called to the scene, but unfortunately the woman did not survive.

“Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones,” says Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police Department.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

At the time of the collision, it was dark and the roads were wet. Police are unable to speak to any contributing causes at this time, but note that with dark and inclement weather, there are increased risks for pedestrians.

A portion of River Road was closed for most of the day last Thursday, Oct. 22 as Delta Police investigated a fatal collision.

Last Thursday, ICBC and Delta Police volunteers were handing out pedestrian high visibility reflectors in Ladner.

Free reflectors are now available in each of the Delta Community Police Offices.

Nearly half of all crashes with pedestrians happen between October and January, she notes.

The investigation is being led by the Delta Police Department Traffic Services team, and their Collision Reconstructionist.

Earthwise reintroduces EcoTour program for kids

The past few years have opened the door to new ways of learning, with outdoors, handson education becoming more popular than ever.

In response, Earthwise Society is reintroducing its popular EcoTour programs for school groups, offering fun, experiential programs at the Earthwise Garden.

Studies have shown that students who learn outdoors develop a stronger sense of independence, confidence, empathy and inquisitive thinking. In addition, getting children connected to nature establishes lifelong learning and environmental responsibility.

EcoTours are curriculum-linked field trips that connect children with nature and the environment by inviting exploration and discovery at the Earthwise Garden. What

do worms and other critters need to live? How do plants grow? What might exist in a garden habitat?

How do gardens support animal life? What can we do at home to protect our environment and conserve our resources?

These are just a few of the questions that could be addressed at an Earthwise Garden EcoTour. They offer children a unique opportunity to explore the secret lives of garden creatures, delve into the activities of insects, plant seeds and wiggle with worms.

All EcoTours include an in-depth tour of the garden and a hands-on workshop component, and are designed to complement classroom learning by relating directly to learning outcomes by grade level. Teachers can also request customized tours, and Earthwise will

Ladner Rotarians hosting shred-a-thon At least 600 low income families throughout Delta, registered with Deltassist, will enjoy a happier Christmas thanks to proceeds from a confidential, secure paper shred-a-thon which Ladner Rotary is holding on Saturday, Oct. 30.

For decades Deltassist has distributed hundreds of Christmas food hampers to low income families and seniors in Delta with food collected through local schools and other organizations.

Ladner Rotary is one of the community partners

of Deltassist in not only funding the hampers, but delivering them through volunteer service of club members.

ShredWise will provide secure shredding services of old tax returns, credit card bills, business records, bank statements, and personal information documents, at $15 per banker box equivalent and by additional donation, if desired.

The shred-a-thon is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a lot behind Eastlink (Delta Cable), at 5381 Ladner Trunk Road.

Colouring our Future in Art ROBERT SHEPPARD

Five long-standing members of the South Delta Artists Guild presents Colouring our Future in Art, the next art exhibition at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen.

During the very long COVID period, these artists were pretty much house-bound. With that, they found inspiration to create through art hoping to ‘Colour the Future’ with hopes of brighter days ahead.

Their original art showcases a vast array of art styles and subject matter including wildlife, portraiture, still life and landscape. Mediums include pastel, watercolour and acrylic.

The artists are: Catherine Sheppard, Menchu Abel, Lorna Wladichuk, Sharee Reynolds and Mary Ellen Bullock.

During the two-week exhibition, there will be some art giveaways. Be sure to visit this show, which starts on Nov. 4 and runs until Nov. 14.

You can see the show at Gallery 1710 Thursdays to Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

Nick Kiniski figures it would have been one heck of a party at his Point Roberts bar if the current U.S. border closure didn’t get in the way.

His father Gene Kiniski is part of the 2021 B.C. Sports Hall of Fame induction class, selected in the Pioneer category.

The pro wrestling legend was known as “Canada’s Greatest Athlete” during a career that spanned decades.

Gene lost his battle to cancer in 2010 at the age of 81. The Blaine resident was a regular at Kiniski’s Reef Tavern where a special section has been dedicated to his career, along with his sons Nick and Kelly, who also went on to become pro wrestlers. The Kiniski collection includes photos, championship belts, trophies and press articles.

Nick and Kelly represented their dad at the induction announcement held earlier this month.

“I am very proud of him and he would be very proud if he was still here to see all his friends and stuff. A quote he

always used was “there are steamships, sailing ships and battleships, but there is no ship like friendship” and he had a lot of friends out there,” said Nick.

Gene grew up in Edmonton and thrived as an amateur wrestler and football player. He went on to earn a football scholarship to the University of Arizona and eventually returned to his hometown to play in the CFL. A serious knee injury cut short his football career and that’s when he turned full-time to pro wrestling, making his debut south of the border with matches in California and Texas.

He then headed to Eastern Canada before coming to Vancouver to join NWA All-Star Wrestling where he established himself as a world champion, earning global fame with appearances throughout North America and Japan.

Nick said his dad’s athleticism and colourful personality made him a perfect fit for the wild world of professional wrestling, while he and his brother tagged along.

Keith and Greg Keith who spearheaded the letter campaign to the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame to get his dad considered for induction.

Folks around here never run out of things to do. One of the most recent highlights was an Oktoberfest luncheon held in West Court, the long term care home.

Older adults enjoyed delicious German food and beer while cheerfully singing along to the live traditional folk band in a celebratory and thoughtfully decorated space. It was truly a lively, festive and authentic experience that magically transported them to a Bavarian beer garden.

Nature Notes: The return of our wintering birds KATHLEEN FRY

At the beginning of October, birds began piling into Delta’s diverse habitats. Some are passing through and others will spend the winter with us.

Outside the dykes of Boundary Bay and Roberts Bank, Western Sandpipers are moving south and Dunlin and Black-bellied Plovers are moving in for the winter. Black-capped Chickadees, Cedar Waxwings and American Robins are gathering in large feeding flocks.

Mallards, American Wigeon and Northern Pintail now spread across the landscape after being mostly absent during the summer. Hawks, eagles

and owls are moving into their favourite winter hunting grounds to the delight of birders and photographers.

When the Snow Geese first arrived this month, they, as usual, made for spectacular bird-watching and photography.

Westham Island was positively sparkling last week with its patchwork of bright pumpkins and intense, green fields of fresh winter grass cover almost buried in thousands of noisy Snow Geese.

These birds spend the fall travelling 5,000 km from nesting colonies on Russia’s Wrangel Island to Pacific coast wintering areas. It must be quite a change from the bare, unpopulated, tundra plains of their

Arctic island, north of the Siberian peninsula, to the crowded habitats of Metro Vancouver. Tens of thousands stay here while others continue south.

Snow geese travel with their young, which are not as white as the adults.

You can see big family groups in the fields this year, indicating they had good reproduction. They rely heavily upon grasses and remnant crops in Delta agricultural fields, and other grassy fields or even playing fields in

Richmond.

Out on the foreshore, their favourite foods are brackish marsh plants, and they never seem to lose their appeal for the general public. My 80-year-old grandmother used to listen for night

flocks coming high over her house in Vancouver, then race to Delta the next morning to look at them.

South Delta Sun Devils earn No. 1 ranking in B.C.

The South Delta Sun Devils are certainly living up to their early season promise, and the rest of the province has taken notice.

The senior girls volleyball team entered this week as the No. 1 ranked team in B.C. at the AAAA tier, designated for the largest schools in the province.

The Sun Devils are undefeated in the South Fraser Premier League with a 7-0 record, having dropped just one set (211) during that run.

They have also been impressive in tournament play with victories at UBC and Seaquam.

Their lone defeat was to No. 1 AAA ranked Mt. Doug in the semifinals at the Camosun Tournament in Victoria.

The girls rebounded to finish third.

The last time the Sun

Devils reached this lofty height was when they capped a dominating run with three straight provincial championships from 2012-2014.

Those teams were led

by Megan and Nicole McNamara who went on to enjoy All-American beach volleyball careers at UCLA. The 24-year-old twins dropped by their old school last week to scrimmage with the team and offer their support.

New additions have Ice Hawks soaring

Patience is paying off in a big way these days for the Delta Ice Hawks.

After somewhat stumbling out of the gate with four losses in six games, the Ice Hawks (8-4-1) have been soaring of late thanks to a barrage of new additions.

It was back in training camp when general manager and head coach Steve Robinson hinted his roster could look significantly different a month into the Pacific Junior Hockey League season as he patiently

waited for B.C. Hockey League teams to finalize their rosters and potential talent trickling his way.

Most of them have arrived and there have been some additional surprises too, resulting in Delta winning five of its last six games and scoring a whopping 43 goals in the process.

“We were giving a lot of young guys the start (of the season) because we knew we had the BCHL cuts (coming), so we had three weeks that were kind of auditions to see if they could stay in the mix,” explained Robinson. “It’s the dirty part of the business, but it’s just the

way it is. We found all those kids (new) homes which is really important to me.

“It was a bit of a musical chairs in the room, but I did prepare lot of the guys that this probably would happen.”

The early season makeover began by acquiring goaltender Braedy Euerby from the Richmond Sockeyes. The Ladner resident and Vancouver Giants prospect, was re-united with his hometown team after being dealt to Richmond two seasons ago when the Ice Hawks already had veteran goalie Jordy Engelson. He has since graduated.

North Delta’s Merik Erickson was also added to the goal crease and the 17-year-old Red Deer Rebels’ prospect made his debut in last Tuesday’s 9-2 win over Grandview.

Robinson got an early Christmas present when d-man Carson Hemenway asked if he could sign with the team. The 19-year-old from Ladner has spent the last couple of seasons in the B.C. Hockey League and was back home waiting for a possible trade. All Hemenway has done is produce 13 points in seven games, including seven goals.

Dealing with adversity is nothing new to the South Delta Sun Devils this season, and they needed to overcome it yet again on Friday night to win the inaugural Delta Bowl.

The Seaquam Seahawks seemed poised to capture the annual Western Conference AAA encounter with their cross-town rival that now has added meaning thanks to the City of Delta sponsoring the game. Mayor George Harvie and Coun. Dylan Kruger took in the Friday night battle at John Oliver Park.

Already leading 21-20 in the late stages of the third quarter, the Seahawks were threatening again on an impressive march that took them inside the South

Delta 10-yard-line.

However, the drive would go no further and the Sun Devils found themselves in the shadow of their own goalposts to start the final quarter.

That’s where the poise of talented Grade 11 quarterback Kenny Scott took over as he used his legs and arm to engineer a 95-yard scoring drive that culminated with his own three-yard run.

For good measure, he combined for a 50-yard major with Declan Dunn in the final two minutes to cap a 34-21 win.

It was the second straight triumph for a team that has lost four starters to seasonending injuries in the past month, including three along the offensive line that has resulted in junior varsity players being aged up.

“We added a new set this week to make it easier for our o-line,” said Scott. “We had a couple of JVs step up for us tonight and it was big.

Scott finished the evening with 138-yards passing and another 50 along the ground. Senior running back Jesse Mitran also clutched up with an

106-yard performance and a pair of majors on 15 carries.

Dunn, who also handles all the kicking, added a key fourth down run out of punt formation in the third quarter that would extend an eventual touchdown drive.

The Seahawks will be a force in the years to

come thanks a number of Grade 10s that start for both their varsity teams, including quarterback Jack MacQuarrie who led the JVs to a 40-24 win over South Delta 24 hours earlier.

It was another talented junior, running back Lucas Shannon, that gave his team a 21-14 halftime lead but Seaquam was held scoreless the rest of the way.

“I explained at halftime I was not pleased with (the defensive play), and it might have been a little bit more colourful than that,” said head coach Ray Moon. “We brought up about 10 kids from our junior varsity team and we had, at times, four or five of them on the field giving the guys a breather because our injuries have made us very thin. They did not hurt us. They fit right in, which was great.”

Henryy (Hank) Fontaine

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Henry (Hank) Fontaine – husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend to so many. He passed away, peacefully on Friday, October 15, 2021 – just nine days shy of his 95th birthday.

Hank is, and will always be, profoundly missed by his dear wife of 67 years – Doris; daughters - Evelyn, Teresa Freeborn, Suzanne, and Yvonne Andersen (he was the original ‘girl-dad’), his son-in-laws - Gord Freeborn, Doug Regelous, Dave Prior, Brian Hession, and Kevin Andersen; grand-children – Adam Freeborn, Ashley Freeborn, Amy Bauer, Karley Hession, Chantelle Andersen, Candice Andersen, and Colton Hession. He was delighted by his great grandchildren - Frankie, Stella, Arianna, and Alyssa.

And he will be forever remembered by his nieces and nephews (all of whom considered him their favorite), and countless friends. All of us were better for knowing him.

Hank was born on October 24, 1926, in the French Canadian community of Saint Boniface, Manitoba to Aime and Augustine Fontaine. He was the second youngest of five children and at the age of seventeen, he moved, with his family, to Vancouver BC. In 1954 he met the love of his life – Doris Gludovatz. They began their life together in Vancouver and as they started their family of four girls, they moved south to the suburbs.

When they needed a home for their growing family, he built them one - in Tsawwassen. It took two years.

Henry and Doris put down deep roots and they never left Tsawwassen. They raised their girls in a home filled with music, laughter, home cooking and love. It was always loud - and we loved it that way. Extended family would travel for hours to join the Fontaine family for Sunday dinners.

After arriving and assimilating in English speaking Vancouver, he found his way to the newly formed Canadian Pacific Airlines (CPAir) where he spent the rest of his working life until retirement in 1991. During his tenure, he spent several years as shop steward.

His affable, fair and reasonable demeanor won him the respect from both the workers he represented and the management he negotiated with, a true measure of his insight and understanding of the way the world works.

Hank was a gifted self-taught musician. Although he couldn’t read a note of music, he could cover any Hank Williams tune on his guitar. His harmonica playing was legendary – and when he was at the center of a house party and had a beer nearby, he would put on his harmonica neck holder so he could play it along with the guitar. He also taught himself the violin as well as the accordian and everyone in attendance during one of his impromptu sing-alongs, would get a fast lesson on the ‘spoons’. The song ‘You Are My Sunshine” was synonymous with ‘Hank’. And every family gathering included an enthusiastic rendition of it. He was ‘our sunshine’ and will forever be in the room when our family gathers.

Hank loved to paint - everything - the house, the fence, his shoes, his cars (with the same house paint). He was the world’s best jerry-rig guy, always finding a solution to anything breaking down or falling apart. He once built more than a 100 bird houses with reclaimed junk and everyone else’s cast offs. And today they hang all over the world. His bowling trophies and belt buckles were repurposed as hood ornaments for his cars.

Everyone that spent time with Henry became pretty proficient at the game of Crib. And you would soon learn his own unique vocabulary that described every hand of cards you played.

He spent decades volunteering for Sacred Heart Church – in fact was very involved with the building of their new church in 1966 and was bestowed the honour of erecting the cross on the steeple as the final touch upon completion.

Hank was loved by so many for the joy he brought into any room he entered; his curiosity about all things; his generosity of spirit; and perhaps most of all, his ability to engage with everyone he met with kindness, genuine interest and empathy. He exuded inclusivity and regardless of whether you were 2 years old or 90 years old - you wanted to be right next to him.

Friends and family are invited for some lunch and a toast and to share their memories of Hank with his family during a Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 12:30- 3:30pm at the Rose and Crown Pub, 1203 56th Street, Tsawwassen, BC. NOTE - Covid protocols will be followed and proof of double vaccination will be required.

BEGG, Janice A. February 23, 1948 − October 20, 2021 Janice Anne Begg (Legault), 73, of Delta, BC, passed away suddenly on October 20, 2021, after a courageous 17 year battle with cancer.

She was born February 23, 1948, in Richmond BC. Janice is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Earl; and son, Jason (Cindy). She was predeceased by her parents, Tiny and Audrey Legault; and brother, Gary.

Bob was born in Vancouver where he lived until 1973, when he and Doreen moved to Ladner and started their family. The small town community living offered here, proved to be a wonderful place to raise a family and they happily stayed.

Bob maintained strong friendships with many of the people he met during his lifetime, including childhood friends, work mates and bar buddies.

During his retirement he continued to make new friends on his trips to Mexico, and at his family summer place on Shuswap Lake.

His happiest hours were those spent with family and friends, the more the merrier.

He was very grateful, as are we, to the wonderful teams of the Fraser Health Home Nurses and Palliative Care, to Dr. Kason and to Dr. Rodrigues, who stepped in and took over his care with compassion and kindness. With their amazing support he was able to spend the last two years on his own terms.

MACFADDEN, Dennis

Jurgen was born in Hamburg, Germany, and immigrated in Canada to B.C., at age 25. He was in the Import/Export business and later started in the Real Estate business, owning Real Estate Companies and building up a success in the real estate sales in South Delta, for 37 years. He was known of his professionalism amongst his colleagues and clients. A few years ago Jurgen was diagnosed with a devastating Lewy body dementia, that then slowly took his life.

THORSTENSON, Edward (Ted) R. April 9, 1946 − October 20, 2021 Ted passed away at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta the morning of October 20. His beloved wife of 51 years, Karen, was by his side. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Miller (George); brother, Cliff Thorstenson (Sherry); brother−in−law, Gerry Sear (April, predeceased October 16, 2021); and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.

As an educator, Ted (Mr. T) was a life−long learner, always seeking new challenges and inspiring those around him with his knowledge, support and charisma.

In anticipation of his retirement from teaching, Ted designed and built their 45’ yacht, Pacific Dawn.

Ted & Karen had many wonderful adventures exploring the BC coast onboard the PD. He also enjoyed herding cattle on an Alberta ranch, riding his bike, driving a pilot car for the transportation of boats and telling hilarious stories about his experiences.

Ted & Karen enjoyed many wonderful vacations, in particular, an annual trip to Wailea, Maui where they developed lasting friendships.

We shall always remember Ted for his enthusiasm for life and his love of family. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Karen and remembered fondly by everyone who knew him.

WILSON, Florence Mary (Morrison) April 11, 1932 - October 11, 2021 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Florence Wilson. Florence was the hub of our family and she will be greatly missed by her children: Heather, Karen (Larry), Donna (Eugene) and Doug (Clarissa); her grandchildren: Caitlin, Hana, Angela, David, Dani, Mikaela and Leah; and her great grandchildren: Justine, Sydney, Sylas, Elise, Theo, Curtis, Tyler, Alize, Viola, and Kaylie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Florence was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Earl Wilson, parents, brother John Morrison, and sister Jean Thorsness.

Florence was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan to Donald and Mary Morrison, meeting Earl in high school. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Health Science with Distinction. After working at the UofA and two Edmonton hospitals, the family moved to BC in 1973, where she was Director of Food Services at Simon Fraser University. She went on to become General Manager for Parnell Foods, and ultimately Director of Food and Nutrition Services at the Vancouver General Hospital until her retirement in 1997. Throughout her career she was very involved in her professional associations, such as the Canadian Dietetics Association and Canadian Food Services Executive Association, and received several industry awards. It was the people she worked with who gave her the most satisfaction in her long career.

Florence enjoyed retirement and her volunteer work on the board of the Kinsmen Retirement Centre, with Elder College, and the annual Giant Book Sale.

She and Earl became immersed in genealogy and incorporated family tree research into their many cruises and travels.

Florence was able to age comfortably in her own home thanks only to the outstanding care and devotion she received from live-in caregiver, Laila, as well as night caregiver Michelle, and daughter Heather. Many other people helped with her care, including the wonderful staff at Delta Hospital in her final days, and our gratitude to all cannot be measured.

A family gathering will be held in the near future to celebrate Florence’s life.
