10 Years of Helping People Regain Space in South Delta T
en years ago, 505-Junk was launched by business partners Barry Hartman and Scott Foran in the basement of Hartman’s parent’s house in Tsawwassen, BC. They bought their first pickup truck, along with a trailer from the side of a road. 505-Junk now has 8 custom-built trucks and 30 full-time employees working together to service our community.
“When we started 505-Junk in 2011 we saw an industry that had not changed in a very long time. Junk removal prices were always based on volume estimates. So while you’re getting charged based on how full the truck looks, the true cost-per-pound can often be a lot less at the transfer station. That is where our unique pay-byweight system came into play”, explains Hartman.
To celebrate this milestone, we will continue to waive our $79 pickup fee for pickups in Tsawwassen and Ladner that are located outside. This way, you can easily clear out your garage, get rid of the old couch, or clean up that pile of wood that you have been putting off. Many of you continue to frequently use our service, and we appreciate you keeping your business local. To the rest of South Delta, we would like to help you as well.
Anniversary Special
29¢ PER POUND
From now until August 31st, we are waiving our $79 pick-up fee and simply charging only 29¢ per pound, with no minimum charge for Ladner and Tsawwassen pickups. Simply leave your items outside, and our team will take care of the rest.* *This includes all labour, transportation, and disposal fees. Regular surcharge rates apply for mattresses, box springs, tires, full paint cans, and other select items.
Every household is unique, which is why we can remove almost anything. Our truck teams are able to take:
• Furniture, electronics, and other household items • Yard waste, wood, and other debris • Construction and demolition materials • Items to be donated • And so much more
We always do our best to recycle material whenever possible and send a truck team of 2 that does all the loading and lifting for you. Each one of our trucks has a scale built into them for proof of weight, keeping the pricing very accurate. We want to share a few policies that we have put in place to keep our team and community safe:
Sanitization: The interior of each truck, including payment equipment, is sanitized after servicing each client.
Hand Washing: Cleaning stations are provided in every truck for our employees. Masks: Truck team members are equipped with a mask for every pickup. Physical Distancing: All material must be located
outside (front yard, back yard, or in a garage) to take advantage of the promotion. If you require a pickup inside your house or apartment, please call 604-505-5865 and we will explain how this service works over the phone.
To book your pickup with 505-Junk, discuss scheduling or receive a quote, please call 604-505-5865 today. You can also book online at 505junk.com/DeltaCleanUp using promo code DeltaCleanUp. From our family to yours,

Protestors speak out against proposed expansion of LNG Tilbury plant MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Environmental groups gathered outside of FortisBC’s Tilbury facility in Delta Friday afternoon to stage a friendly protest regarding the company’s proposal to expand its site. The Tilbury Marine Jetty Project on the Fraser River would include the berthing and transferring of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to vessels for delivery to local fuel markets and off-shore export. The supply will come via a pipeline from the existing adjacent Tilbury plant. The project is subject to review under B.C.’s Environment Assessment Act and the requirements of the Canadian Environment Assessment Act. The Environment Assessment Office is inviting the public to comment on the Summary Assessment Report for a 30-day period starting Aug. 5.
The protest coincided with Global Day of Action Against Fracking and LNG and was among 20 world-wide demonstrations. “The government is having to make a decision in the fall about whether Tilbury LNG expansion can proceed to an environmental assessment. We are really hoping (B.C. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy) George Heyman will see there is community opposition. That it doesn’t fit within the climate plan and he will object to it outright before it even gets to assessment,” said Peter McCartney, speaking on behalf of the Wilderness Committee that organized the Tilbury protest. “We are also here as part of a whole global movement standing up against fracking and LNG. They know the carbon pollution from this gas is what is causing these disasters all over the world. It heartens

Delta man charged for outburst at Richmond McDonald’s VALERIE LEUNG
Ri c h m o n d N e w s
A 30-year-old Delta man has been charged with mischief and assault after an alleged violent outburst at a Richmond McDonald’s last Tuesday. William David Scott Jolly has been charged with five offences, including mischief over $5,000, mischief under $5,000, assault with a weapon, assault of a peace officer and willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, according to Richmond RCMP. In a video posted by Kate Rebel on TikTok, Jolly is allegedly seen
smashing a display case, smashing glass dividers and throwing a trash can at Ironwood Plaza’s McDonald’s employees after he was told he wouldn’t be served because he allegedly knocked over a hand sanitizer stand on purpose. The outburst, according to Rebel, was over a mistyped order for a Happy Meal. When staff said they would be refunding his money and contacting the police, the man allegedly turned violent. Richmond RCMP were called and officers approached the suspect
who allegedly assaulted two restaurant employees and two police officers during the incident. Cpl. Ian Henderson, Richmond RCMP spokesperson, said the investigation is still ongoing and “it would be inappropriate to speak to this apparent evidence (video) at this time.” Jolly has been released on bail with his next court appearance scheduled for August 18. Witnesses are asked to contact the Richmond RCMP directly at 604278-1212 quoting file number 2021-20311 or anonymously at 1-800222-8477.

Delta Police are urging a driver to come forward after a hit-and-run incident involving a youth in Ladner last week. According to DPD, on July 29, between 1:30 and 2 p.m., a Delta youth was travelling on a longboard eastbound on 45th Ave. at Garry St. in Ladner when an SUV or minivan apparently turned left in front of them. The driver hit the youth, and drove over the front of their longboard. “Fortunately the youth was not injured in this incident, but their longboard was broken,” said DPD spokesperson Cris

Major Delta highway project to finish in 2023 SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Drivers are noticing huge piles of sand and plenty of equipment roadside as they approach the Alex Fraser Bridge. It’s part of a major highway upgrade project now taking place, the Highway 91/17 and Deltaport Way Upgrade Project. The project is a $260 million undertaking, which includes a series of roadworks aimed at increasing highway efficiency and reducing conflicts between local traffic and commercial vehicles. “It’s a project aimed at improving safety for people and support the growing economic and trade development that’s happening south of the Fraser River,” Bowinn Ma, BC’s Minister of State for Infrastructure, told the Optimist. “This is a series of road and highway upgrades that will improve travel time
and also provide a more reliable route through Delta for not just local residents, but commercial truck drivers, transit operators, first responders and other travellers as well. We’re seeing the growth in economic activity around the port and what that means is a lot of the existing infrastructure is no longer sufficient or appropriate for handling the kinds of movements that we’re seeing through that area. “Right now, what people will see on site is sand piles, or preload, and that’s being used for all new roadway alignments as part of the construction of this upgrade project. Those preload piles will be there through spring of 2022 and we expect the full project to be completed by 2023.” The upgrade will see improvements to Highway 91 at the Nordel interchange, upgrades to the Highway 91 connector at the Nordel
Way intersection, a new interchange at Highway 17 and Highway 91 connector (Sunbury) and a new interchange at River Road connecting to Highway 17. Funding partners include the Government of Canada through the National Infrastructure component of the New Building Canada Fund, the Province of British Columbia and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. Ma, who took part in a tour of a planned major project to further widen Highway 1 corridor through the Fraser Valley, noted other highway improvement projects to get underway include the recently announced Highway 99 corridor improvements. That project will include a new Steveston interchange, additional bus-on-shoulder lanes, a new bus-only connection at Bridgeport Road and upgraded cycling infra-

The province notes the highway improvement project in Delta will complement the completed the 72nd Avenue Interchange Project and the Alex Fraser Bridge Improvement Project. structure, all in advance of the George Massey Tunnel replacement. As far as the tunnel replacement, Ma noted a business case for a preferred option has been prepared but her government and is still currently still in talks with the federal government regarding funding. An announcement about that project will come once those discus-
sions conclude. “When it comes to transportation improvement programs, our government is also taking a much more forwardlooking, multi-model approach,” she said. “We know that with the type of growth we’re seeing out in the Fraser Valley and the heavy dependent on cars, we need to make it easier for people to have more choices about the
way that they travel, so, that means making public transit more competitive and helping communities grow in a more compact way to enable people to live close to where they work, to go to school close to where they live and to have childcare close to schools and so forth, so that they’re not needing to be on the road 50 km a day to be able to go about their lives.”

Townhomes pitched at former site of Ladner heritage home SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
An application for a six-unit townhouse development at the former site of a Ladner heritage home is winding its way through the approval process. The Advisory Design Panel was to discuss the residential development application at 4829-48 Ave., just west of 48 Street at the edge of Ladner Village. The rezoning application involves threestorey, three-bedroom townhomes within two buildings. Three of the townhouse units would front directly onto 48 Avenue and the other three would be accessed via an internal driveway. The site previously contained the historic Wilson Residence, which was demolished by the owner in late 2019. Two years earlier,
the Heritage Advisory Commission reluctantly gave the green light for the owner to demolish the structure, provided a number of conditions were met including advertising the building for sale for the sum of one dollar. The owner, Amman Dhaliwal, purchased the rental home from a relative a couple of years prior and informed the commission the house had extensive deterioration. A third party assessment also concluded the house could not be reasonably rehabilitated. The commission elected not to impose a temporary 60-day freeze, but expressed concern how the property had not been maintained, nor had there been any consideration to preserving the heritage structure. A civic report at the time noted Delta’s updated heritage strategy and its associated initia-
tives would help avoid such future neglect, as a new bylaw would be a tool to require heritage buildings within heritage conservation areas to be maintained and in good repair. The Wilson Residence, which was on Delta’s Urban Heritage Inventory, was constructed in 1904 for Herbert Lyman and Susan Alice Wilson, who lived there until Lyman’s death in 1942. The house had of variety of renters and owners since that time. When it was evaluated from the exterior in 2000, the house appeared in good condition with no signs of structural deterioration. However, it had a number of major problems by the time it was torn down. The new development application for the site also includes removing a big maple leaf tree.

With not a comment or discussion to be had, the application for a housing development at Evergreen Lane breezed through its first and second reading by City of Delta council on July 26. Referred to a public hearing scheduled for Sept. 9, the proposed project entailing 198 units of affordable housing for seniors, families and inclusive housing for individuals with intellectual disabilities, would be taken on in two phases. Of the 198 units, up to 10 would be inclusive housing units for individuals with intellectual disabilities through the Delta Housing Be Mine Society. “Phase one would include 130 seniors housing units in a four-storey apartment building to the north. Phase two would include 68 family housing units in a 48 unit four-storey apartment building and a 20 unit three-storey townhouse
building to the south,” reads the report by the Community Planning & Development department. The site currently contains three rental apartment buildings with a total of 119 units between 4603, 4625 and 4649 Evergreen Lane. The 4625 and 4649 buildings, which are already vacated, are proposed to be demolished to accommodate phase one of the project while the 4603 building would be retained until phase two was proposed for development. “For phase one, there would be three rent classifications for the development: rent-gearedto-income (50 per cent), affordable market rentals (30 per cent) and lower market rentals (20 per cent),” reads the Delta staff report. The apartment units would be managed by Affordable Housing Societies, who would fund half of the units with B.C. Housing funding the other half.

A cycling challenge to fight childhood cancer DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Raising awareness and funds to help sick children fight cancer is a cause very near and dear to Ladner resident Jaime Pacreu’s heart. During the month of August he will be taking on the Great Cycle Challenge (GCC), which is a fundraising initiative supporting Canada’s largest paediatric oncology centre, the Garron Family Cancer Centre at SickKids. Because this is the sixth year he’s participated – and has raised a total of $4,270 in previous years – Pacreu has been named an official GCC “Champion.” This time around, his goal is to ride 300 km and raise $3,000 to go towards researching, treating and finding a cure for all childhood cancers. “I have two kids, and

Jamie Pacreu.
I’m fortunate that they’re healthy, but I truly believe that kids should be kids. They should be playing and they should be enjoying their lives, not be in a hospital bed trying to stay alive,” he says. Pacreu will be riding on the weekends of August in his free time, alternating between cycling around Boundary Bay and Stanley Park. His first ride of the challenge will be a group ride at the 25 km looping Traboulay PoCo Trail, where he aims to ride
100 km alongside fellow cyclists taking on the Great Cycle Challenge Canada. Pacreu has loved cycling since he was a child himself, and he has carried that passion into his adult life. “Cancer is a terrible disease for anyone. In my family, my grandma passed away from pancreatic cancer,” he says. “I believe, certainly, if there is something that I can do to support [this cause], I will do it. And why not combine something that I really enjoy with something that I’m really interested in supporting?” In 2020, the Great Cycle Challenge raised $9.4 million with 52,205 riders across Canada, says the SickKids website. To donate and stay up to date on Pacreu’s efforts, visit greatcyclechallenge.ca/riders/ JaimePacreu.

Distinction between City Council’s and the Police Board’s Role in Municipal Policing In response to recent media statements and a notice of motion brought by a City of Delta Councillor, the Delta Police Board would like to clarify its role and the role of Delta City Council in municipal policing. Policing in British Columbia is regulated by the B.C. Police Act, and overseen by the provincial government. This provincially legislated structure ensures that police departments remain independent and protected from municipal politics. Municipal Police Boards are the governance bodies for municipal police departments, and have the essential role of creating and maintaining the police department’s independence from Council. Councils do not, and are not able to, direct the administration or operations of a police department. Council’s role in relation to the Delta Police Department (DPD) is solely to: 1) provide the required funding for the Department; and 2) identify local priorities, goals and objectives, which the DPD takes into account when developing its strategic plan. The Mayor is legally required to be the Chair of the Police Board, and therefore its spokesperson. However, the Mayor does not have a vote in relation to the Board’s governance of the police department, except in the case of a tie vote of the Board members. When speaking for the Board, the Mayor always represents and conveys the unified majority position of the Board, in matters concerning the DPD and community public safety. This information is being provided to properly explain Council’s role in local policing administration and operations. As a governance body, the Board’s mandate is to provide governance oversight to the DPD, acting in the best interest of our community as a whole. As a Police Board composed of local community residents, who live, work and raise families in North and South Delta, we are committed to ensuring that the DPD continues to provide excellence in policing to our community and upholds the community policing philosophy of “No Call Too Small.” The Delta Police Board maintains full confidence in the leadership of Chief Constable Neil Dubord. We are also proud of the work of the entire DPD team, and are grateful for their ongoing commitment and dedication to keeping our Delta communities safe. -Delta Police Board

OPINION
Respect not abuse
T
he video is shocking and disturbing. I’m referring to a video and story posted last week by our sister paper the Richmond News that shows a Delta man verbally harassing employees of a Richmond McDonald’s Restaurant. After shouting obscenities at the staff, the man is allegedly seen smashing a display case, smashing glass dividers and throwing a trash can at employees after he was told he wouldn’t be served because he allegedly knocked over a hand sanitizer stand on purpose. The reason for this violent outburst according to the person who filmed the video - he was angry over a mistake in his Chicken McNuggets Happy Meal. The man has since been charged with five offences including mischief and assault and will be appearing in provincial court later this month. Watching the video, I’m at a loss for words. There is simply no excuse for this outlandish behavior. The restaurant staff should be commended for keeping their cool. Sadly this is not the first time an incident of vandalism and or harassment has taken place in or involved a member of our community. Several weeks ago we reported on the overnight vandalism to the outdoor patio at Lara Cuisine Cafe Bistro & Catering in Ladner Village. Owner and chef Fatma Telli, told us she stepped into her restaurant’s outdoor seating tent to find hand sanitizer-coated tables that had been thrown around, littered empty pizza boxes and scratched leather chairs. This was also the second incident of vandalism that she and her staff experienced in as many weeks. Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, I received an email from a resident who stated that her teenager, who works in a local restaurant, was sworn at and treated rudely by members of our community while she served them because they felt they were entitled to things that they were not. The restaurant and service industry has been impacted immensely because of the pandemic. They are doing their best under health and safety protocols. They deserve respect at the best of times and even more so under this intense pressure to keep their doors open and their businesses afloat. We all need to be more kind, respectful and patient. If you can’t do that, then just stay home. -Ian Jacques/Editor
Compromise, civic duty and engagement is the best way to achieve thoughtful growth
D
elta has been reaching out to the community for input on housing needs for quite some time. Delta is one of the slowest growing cities in Metro Vancouver and Tsawwassen has the lowest growth rate in Delta. There are lots of people around here who think that is just fine, but in reality, we need measured growth to keep seniors and young people in Tsawwassen and Ladner to keep our communities sustainable. Bosa Developments, a wellrespected real estate developer, is in the process of preparing to apply for a purpose built rental building on the site of the old Husky gas station at 14B and 56 Street. In a recent letter to mayor and council, the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association offered its support citing that its’ mandate includes support for small business. They suggest that a rental building, close to the town centre and transit, will support the ability to retain workers that will support our local economy. In the same package of correspondence was a letter
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
from former Coun. Wendy Jeske who outlined several objections based on height, density, parking and other concerns. She also claims that “the community is losing its essential character as has already occurred in Ladner.” What does that even mean? A comment on Facebook’s “Tsawwassen Loop” quotes this statement and states Wowwwww. Just wow! If you live in Ladner now, you must feel so ashamed and embarrassed by your character loss. If you live in Tsawwassen, you must be trembling with the thought that people who choose or need to rent their accommodation, are somehow going to erode our “quality of life.”
The Optimist posted a webonly story on Jeske’s letter and in the description called it a “familiar” refrain. There are some interesting arguments both pro and con regarding the development on the Tsawwassen Loop. I would say that about 60 per cent of commentary is supportive of the purpose built rental building and 40 per cent against. The pro side agrees that additional rental would help to keep seniors and young people in our town and support our local economy. The con side uses typical references to the next Surrey or Richmond. Another baseless observation is that crime and pollution will increase. Meritless generalizations that essentially say that renters somehow “lower standards” only highlight the notion that Tsawwassen is still caught in its long standing “Little Rhodesia” metaphor. Just saying no to any development project just does not fly. Rather, compromise, civic duty and engagement in the process is the best way to achieve thoughtful growth and a sustainable future. I am hopeful that as the process continues, people can have a clear opportunity to participate.

Don’t cut down these trees Editor: Just read the article about the owners of two new homes on 54A St in Ladner wanting their street trees removed because of sidewalk issues (Optimist, July 29). I happen to live a few houses down from these folks in a 90-year-old house with two horse chestnut street trees in front of our home, which I estimate are close to the same age as our old place. Our sidewalk is just fine with no lifting concrete with these big beautiful shade giving, air cleaning trees. One of the things that
made us love our house was the lovely tree lined street. Many streets in Ladner have almost no trees. Council and city staff need to get way more aware of trees and how they help cool and shade communities especially older, big trees which take decades to mature. New saplings will offer almost no shade for years. Cities around the world are waking up to how crucial trees are for cooling and cleaning the air and reducing the temperatures during increasingly hot dry
summers. The Globe and Mail and New York Times recently had editorials on this exact issue. Trees are invaluable. In this year especially, after our “heat dome” nightmare which we now know killed over 500 B.C residents, we need to increase tree canopies and protect our existing street trees. Unfortunately the sidewalk at these new homes is badly configured, but it sounds like the staff are on it and planning to give the trees more root space. Don’t cut down these trees! Martha Cheney
Editor: Regarding the recent new tree bylaw article in the Optimist (July 29), I think Delta has gone tree crazy. The overall goal is good, but how about concentrating on all the trees already planted that are dying due to lack of water? All the trees dead and dying in the local shopping malls with no action taken by store
owners. These dead and dying trees look horrible, is anyone with the City requiring businesses to maintain or replace neglected and dead trees? Direct some resources to maintenance before going ‘ham’ on new plantings and strict regulations. Maybe the percent of canopy coverage would be another two to five percent higher if
some energy was focused on maintaining past plantings. Also I think some more effort should be put into planning the type of trees planted (example planting fast tall growing trees under power lines is not a great idea... and perhaps with climate change selecting more drought tolerant trees might be a good idea too). Sorry Fortis we are not fooled Editor: How can Fortis even think of shipping overseas? Here is data from 2020 Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis: The finances of PetroChina, the Asian nation’s largest stateowned natural gas company and its top gas importer, reveal the company realized substantial losses from gas imports every year from 2015 through 2019. To justify expansion of imports, China would likely need to secure long-term LNG supplies at prices well under $7/
MMBtu. Those prices would leave U.S. LNG exports out of the money in many market conditions and would certainly limit any upside profits for U.S. exports. Low citygate gas prices in China similarly limit the profitability of U.S. LNG exports to China. These forces — along with other structural and infrastructure constraints in China and globally — will create substantial headwinds for a Chinaled resurgence for the U.S. LNG industry. Moving forward, U.S. LNG developers would be wise to pay close attention to the cost
and price pressures that bedevil Asian gas markets. Bullish demand projections for LNG demand in China and Southeast Asia tend to ignore the price sensitivity of these markets, as well as the many logistical, economic, and political obstacles to the development of LNG and gas infrastructure. The most optimistic LNG demand scenarios are simply unrecognizable to experienced analysts of the Chinese energy. Guess who will be paying to subsidize this. Yup, we the taxpayer. Phyllis Ruthven

Policing methods questioned after false arrest Second false gun report in recent weeks called into Delta Police IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A Richmond man is calling into question policing methods following what turned out to be a false arrest by Delta Police in Tsawwassen last week. The man, who does not want to be identified due to the nature of
his work, was travelling to South Delta from his workplace in Langley for a round of golf at Tsawwassen Springs on July 26. While travelling along Highway 17, he says he was cut off by another driver. He honked his horn in an attempt to avoid an accident, which he did.
He then made his way into Tsawwassen, stopping at a local coffee shop, a little after 8 a.m. He left a few minutes later, returned to his vehicle and pulled out of the parking lot when he saw several DPD vehicles approach. He stopped, pulled over and was then surrounded by officers at gunpoint.
“I rolled down my window and they ordered me out of the vehicle, ordered me to put up my hands and that I was under arrest,” he said. “They handcuffed me and told me that someone called in and I was under arrest for pointing a gun at them.” He said his car was searched and no weapon

was found. “I was released and the officers asked me whether I had been involved in an incident on the road earlier in the morning. I said yes. I saw the car that cut me off follow me into Tsawwassen and at the time I didn’t think anything of it, but after what happened, I’m 99 per cent certain this was the person who made the call to police.” He says the incident begs a lot of questions. “The officers apologized and said it was a mistake and I was free to go, but now I just want to provoke questions when it comes to policing. How do they determine what is a credible threat? I understand they have to act on a gun incident, but if anyone can call in and then say something that didn’t happen…my rights were violated here.” Earlier this month a group of black teens from Calgary were pulled over and arrested by DPD following a complaint that a gun was pointed at them from a moving vehicle. The teens were later released from custody and offered an apology from officers when no weapon was found. “I heard about this incident as well. I am of Asian descent. I don’t want to play the race card, but is this a racial hate thing on the part of these complaints?” he says. “My issue is with the policing system in terms of how they are trained and how they respond to these incidents. The bigger thing is why are there no consequences to the complainants? Why are there no charges against the person who falsely accused me and reported this?” DPD Insp. Guy Leeson said the Delta Police Department takes all calls seriously, especially ones where public safety is potentially put at risk. “In a case like this where there is a report of a person driving a
vehicle in possession of what is believed to be a firearm, the DPD will respond immediately given the nature of the complaint,” said Leeson. “Given that a firearm was alleged, our officers take every precaution during the vehicle stop to ensure continued safety of the public, the police and the driver of the vehicle.” Leeson said although the call was determined to be unfounded, the original complainant sincerely believed that they had observed what they believed to be a firearm in the possession of the driver who was stopped by police. The complainant remained on the line with officers to ensure that the officers located the correct vehicle, said Leeson. With regards to a possible charge (mischief complaint or false report) against the complainant, Leeson said it would require the police be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the original complainant intended to mislead police or cause harm to the complainant. He added that this case does not meet this threshold as the complainant appears to sincerely believe they observed a firearm. “All reports to the Delta Police are thoroughly investigated; in a situation like this one where public safety is potentially at risk, police must act on the information, while taking steps to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and safely,” added Leeson. “It is regrettable and understandable that the complainant felt that he had been unnecessarily put through a stressful situation for a report that ultimately turned out to be unfounded; however, given the initial information that was reported, Delta Police officers had to react quickly to ensure continued public safety.”

It was an emotional afternoon at KinVillage’s Assisted Living building, where seven residents released butterflies outside as a symbol of transition and rebirth from the darkest days of the pandemic. Just before 2 p.m. on July 30, seven residents and Brian Winger, the recreation coordinator for Assisted Living at KinVillage, gathered on the patio with little white boxes containing the Painted Lady butterflies. And on the count of three, they opened their boxes and released the seven brilliantly-coloured butterflies into the summer sun as residents watched from the airconditioned lounge. “It took everything in me not to cry,” said Winger following the release. “I wish I could have given them all [a butterfly] to release. If I had my way, I would have had like 30, 40 butterflies.” KinVillage was participating in an initiative by the B.C. Care Providers Association and EngAge B.C. to commemorate those they’ve

lost to COVID-19, while also acknowledging and appreciating those who are still here today. Before and after the release, Winger and residents recalled what their building has gone through throughout the many phases of the pandemic and acknowledged how strong and resilient they all were to make it to this point. “We went through different stages, like what a butterfly went through in its life, but today, we’re here together as survivors. We’re here as a family. Yes, we lost three of
our dear souls, our family members, but we’re very fortunate that we lost only three,” said Winger to the residents. “We can, today, still have their memories with us, we can live thinking about them and cherishing the memories that we had with them. Such as a butterfly goes through many stages, so have we.” Tiny Wolfe, one of the residents who released a Painted Lady, read a poem by Jill Haley before the group of seven went outside. “As you release this butterfly in honor of me,

come through the power of human reason, but only come through divine revelation. God must take the initiative if we are to know anything about God. The good news is that God has done this! If you want to understand who God is and what God is like, look to Jesus — God’s ultimate divine revelation to humanity. Open up a Bible and pray for understanding. Read about Jesus in the gospel accounts and in the testimony of the Apostles. Hear the testimony of those alive today who have been freed from bondage and forgiven of their sins and promised eternal life. The full meaning of this amazing love will not come through our heads, but our hearts. So if you want to understand who God is and what God is like look to Jesus, and let your hearts do the understanding.

Smart phones are modern conveniences that most folks have come to take for granted. Take a moment to consider that these common, small devices are far more technologically sophisticated than the computers contained in the space-craft which transported human beings safely from the earth to the moon and back again in the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission. Amazing. The modern trajectory of technological progress has indeed been astounding. Over the course of the last century, automobiles became our main means of transportation, humans traverse the globe in a massive interconnected network of air travel, antibiotics were discovered, and heart transplants per-
formed. Now scientists are developing better and more sustainable means of harvesting the earth’s energy. Consider the astoundingly short amount of time it has taken to develop vaccines against the COVID-19 virus. All of that requires quite a bit of understanding! Human beings have indeed been gifted with the ability to reason and to think abstractly. But even such amazing intellectual capability has its limits — especially when it comes to the matter of God. We humans continue to struggle with spiritual questions. Some very smart people look to prove or disprove the existence of God. But unlike natural phenomena, God is not an object that can be quantified or measured. The Bible witnesses that an understanding of God will not

Artist brighting up walls around English Bay
Tsawwassen resident Rory Doyle’s work is part of Vancouver Mural Festival which kicked off this week CAMERON THOMSON
Va n c o u ve r I s Awe s o m e
When he was 16 Rory Doyle was painting on walls with a spray can. Twenty-five years later a lot has changed -- now he gets permission and uses a brush. The long-time Tsawwassen resident and his writing partner did so well with their art they started getting established gigs painting youth spaces and pizza parlours. From there Doyle entered the graphic design scene and became a 3D artist for Next Level Games. After a decade of working digitally, Doyle got back to getting his hands wet with paint again. For the last six years, Doyle has been painting murals for clients like the YVR International Airport, the University of British Columbia and the Bank of Montreal. Now his work is going back on the streets thanks to the Vancouver Mural Festival starting
this August 4. Doyle’s piece will be painted on an outside wall of the Craft Beer Market location near English Bay facing Pantages Lane. Doyle’s mural will incorporate various aspects of Vancouver life spit into four seasons. The mural will also pay homage to the lane’s namesake, Peter Pantages who inaugurated Vancouver’s first polar bear swim over 100 years ago. Doyle started work on the mural on July 27 and estimated a production time of around 10 days, just in time for the Vancouver Mural Festival which kicked off on Aug. 4. To get an idea of what Doyle’s mural will look like, he describes his signature style as a mix of figures and objects with vibrant palettes. His use of colour strives for a beautifully layered composition of shapes to help create artistic narratives. While the shapes

in his art may appear basic, Doyle doesn’t call his style simple as he explains sometimes simple is the hardest to execute. As for why Doyle got
out of the video game industry and back into making art in the real world, it’s something about the tactile feeling of paint, brick and mortar.
“It’s something that is challenging to the point where when I first stare at a wall, especially a big one you kind of go ‘what have I gotten myself into here?’” Doyle
said. “Working with your hands is a huge one, I love creating something from scratch, something that’s going to make people happy and brighten up the neighbourhood.”

The ‘Wander Inn Café’ and Freshwave Ministries are thrilled to be hosting their Hearts of Hope fundraiser again. The outdoor event, set for Saturday, Aug. 14, is in support of Freshwave Ministries. Come to the Lighthouse Church back yard (5545 Ladner Trunk Road) from 1 to 5 p.m. for the event. A suggested $20 entrance donation covers concession/entertainment and will greatly help the organization continue the work they do. Enjoy the afternoon as you bid on fabulous silent auction items, buy treasures from the ‘new-to-you’ table, savor delicious goodies and beverages from the concession, learn about Freshwave Ministries
at the information table, and enjoy a great music concert featuring Christine Magee, Ranj Singh, Cut n’ Dried Duo (David Joy/Don Anderson) and The Karmichaels’ band (Dave Karmazyn, Maribel Karmazyn, Mike Hurworth, Russil Alden, Rich Mayer and Gavin Strang). Magee delights her audience with genres from soul, jazz and gospel to pop/rock. As event MC, she will get the show going and lead in with original and cover tunes. Singh makes music with a distinct Indian-Western flair, which shows his love for rock music and heartfelt lyrics. He refers to his unique blend of music as ‘Indo-Canadian Folk’. The Cut n’ Dried Duo discovered, while working in the same
hair salon, they both played guitar and sang. Realizing that their musical repertoire was much the same, they began making music together and, thus, the duo was born. Folk-country rock group and South Delta’s own The Karmichaels, will entertain you with original and cover songs that include country rock, country, soft rock and Celtic folk. All COVID-19 health and safety protocols are in effect, so please practice social distancing and wear your mask. Freshwave Ministries, a South Delta-based organization, has been serving the marginalized persons in Vancouver every Monday evening since 2010. See more on the organization at www.reshwaveministries.

Summer is well underway, and what better place to spend those sunny August days than in the beautiful Earthwise Garden? If you’re looking for a great reason to come and explore the Garden, Earthwise is excited to be offering a series of fun and educational workshops that will focus on urban biodiversity. As a bonus, they have added a very special workshop that will help rid you of a pesky summer problemmosquitoes- in the most natural way possible. Late summer and fall are especially critical times to provide forage for pollinators, and the first August workshop will explore the pollinator gardens at Earthwise and help you select plants for your own pollinator gardens at home.
Pollinator populations are in decline for many reasons, including loss of habitat and pesticide use, and this workshop will teach you how to make a difference by planting eco-friendly gardens that provide a steady source of pollen and nectar throughout the growing season. This workshop will run on Aug. 12 from noon to 1 p.m. And what would a B.C. summer be without mosquitoes? If you’ve been searching for a natural solution to mosquito troubles, visit Earthwise on Aug. 19 from noon to 1 p.m. to discover some natural ways to deter those summer pests. Participate in some interactive gardening activities that will show you what to plant in your garden to repel mosquitoes, learn how to make
your own herbal mosquito repellent spray using essential oils, and make a beeswax and plantain salve to soothe mosquito bites. Participants will go home with a bottle of their own natural mosquito repellant spray and a small container of plantain salve! The final August workshop, being held on Aug. 26 from noon to 1 p.m. will explore the beauty and benefits of native plants, many that are indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. Learn why native plants are critical in supporting local wildlife populations, and why indigenous plants often require less care. For more information about the workshops, and to register, visit earthwisesociety.bc.ca and email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

The fact that the 2004 Delta Heat has earned darkhorse status for this weekend’s U19A provincial championships is an indication of just how much work the girls rep softball team put in during the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the Heat’s first crack at this age level with still two more seasons of eligibility. The 2002 White Rock Renegades are considered the favourites of the 14-team event that gets underway on Friday at London Park, while the 2003 Delta Heat and 2003 Surrey Storm are right on their heels. The 2004s showed their progress with a semi-final appearance at last month’s Pride and Power Tournament at Softball City. The run was highlighted by a 10-7 round-robin victory over the eventual champion 2003 Storm. The run ended with a semi-final loss to their year older Heat counterparts. The
impressive run did wonders for the players’ confidence. “It gave our girls some hope where all the time and effort they have put in during COVID where they could have just packed their bags and mailed it in. They just worked their tails off,” said head coach Chris Ainge. “We have improved so much and they deserve so much credit for how hard they have worked. They keep coming out to practice. They keep busting their tails and the results are showing on the field. They have opened a lot of eyes.” With no player boundaries, there can be plenty of movement at the rep level, yet the Heat’s roster has stayed pretty well intact over the years. That makes the team’s improvement even more satisfying. “They are much the same group. They have put their heads down and work boots on. I am super proud of them,” added Ainge. “If the stars align for us this weekend maybe we can make some noise.”

Coming off a strong showing at last month’s Pride and Power Tournament at Softball City, the 2004 Delta Heat is looking forward to this weekend’s provincial U19A championships that get underway on Friday in Richmond.
Tsawwassen teen sets provincial record in decathlon debut MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Aidan Turner won three gold and a silver medal.
It was quite a first impression to say the least for Aidan Turner at the B.C. Athletics Challenge last month in Kelowna. Competing in his first-ever decathlon, the 16-year-old from Tsawwassen broke the U18 provincial record with a two-day aggregate total of 6,358 points. The breakdown of his 10 events included: 100 metres (11.97 seconds), long jump (6.31 M), shot put (11.95 M), high jump (1.72 M), 400 metres (52.97), 110 hurdles (15.08 seconds), discus (37.89 M), pole vault (4.30 M),
javelin (39.09 M), 1,500 metres (5:10.51). Turner already was a provincial record holder in the pole vault and thrives in other events too. He was always intrigued by the decathlon but didn’t get the opportunity to showcase his allround ability until Kelowna due to the COVID-19 pandemic wiping out the competition schedule for the past 16 months. His preparation included training up to four events per session with the Kajaks Track and Field Club out of Richmond, with no more than a five minute break between them. He credits his work with Kajaks head coach
Garrett Collier who specializes in throwing events. “Because it was my first one I didn’t really have any expectations for myself as I didn’t know how I would feel throughout the two days. How taxing it would be on my body,” said the soonto-be Grade 11 student at South Delta Secondary who also had to deal with the extreme summer Okanagan heat. “It was very different than I thought it would be but I think I managed myself quite well. I had enough energy for all the events which was nice.” Turner still has another year at the U18 level and already has

his eye on the age group national record which he was 166 points short of reaching. He figures his best bet is shaving down his time in the 1500, the event he admits he needs the most work on. “I was hoping for a 4:50 in the 1500. If I do exactly the same in the other nine events and do a 4:40 in the 1500 it would be enough points,” he added. Turner was back in action a week later as Langley hosted the B.C. Challenge sprint and jumping events. He won pole vault (4.60) and 110 metre hurdles (15.48), and added a second place finish in the 200 metres (23.55).

HENNESSY, Douglas S. May 27, 1940 − July 10, 2021 The world has lost a kind and caring gentleman. Born on May 27, 1940, in Tsawwassen and growing up in Ladner, Doug always wanted to be a pilot. He built numerous model aircraft and it was there he met his high school sweetheart, Gwen Martinolich. Doug had many interests including sports (he excelled at pole vaulting), the outdoors, he was an avid Steelhead fisherman and travelled all over the Pacific Northwest on camping/fishing adventures. Doug’s true passion was flying. After obtaining his pilot’s license he constructed his own aircraft and joined the homebuilt community at Delta Airpark. Doug took his last flight on July 10, 2021, and will be dearly missed by his sister, Carolynne; his children, David (Melvina) and Karen (Chris); his grandchildren, Brandon (Theresa), and Shawna; and his nieces & nephews. A special thank you to Abigail. Her friendship and care allowed Doug to live life as he wished.
BARNES , Jeffrey Lawrence October 30, 1925 – July 21, 2021 Our dear Jeff passed away July 21, 2021 in Surrey, BC. Jeff was born October 30, 1925 in Claremont, Tasmania. Jeff is survived by Sharole, Sally (Jeremy), Donna (Bruce) and many other extended family and wonderful friends, both in North America and Australia. After graduating from high school, Jeff joined the R.A.A.F (Royal Australian Air Force), where he learned to fly a Tiger Moth Airplane. He lived in Australia for many years, where he got married and later moved to Canada. Jeff worked at Van City, as Branch Manager for a number of years before retiring and working for Century Group, in Tsawwassen.

His wonderful sense of humor and happy, positive approach to life will live on as an inspiration to everyone. Paying It Forward
N
ext year the Optimist will celebrate our 100th year serving South Delta. In this time, the Optimist has gained a reputation as an avid supporter of our community’s charitable and non-profit organizations. Our editorial staff work closely with these groups to make sure their messages are relayed in our stories and event calendars. In addition, many of our staff volunteer time to boards and we have often donated proceeds from advertising features to community ty-minded y organizations. Most importantly, we have also been able to support local charities through the sponsorship of their advertising – both online and in our printed edition.
As the media landscape has changed so has our financial ability tyy to continue these sponsorships. We have needed to become increasingly selective in regards to which organizations we can support. In many cases, we have had to scale back sponsorships entirely. This, inevitably, adds pressure to the organizations to increase their promotional budgets. Unfortunately, in many cases this is not an option and the fundraising initiatives are canceled altogether. The Optimist is reaching out to our readers, those of you who support our local initiatives, to ask for your support. Between now and August 31, 2021, any contribution made to the Optimist, however large or small, will be paid forward in twice the promotional space to South Delta’s many wonderful charitable and non-profit organizations. Contributions may be made at delta-optimist.com/support, or if you prefer not to donate online, you may call 604-946-4451 and press ‘5’ for Contributions, or drop-off / mail-in cheques to: 5008 47A Avenue, Ladner, BC, V4K 1T8.
