Somber and moving tributes have been set up at Delta Municipal Hall in Ladner and throughout the city to remember the 215 First Nations children whose remains were found buried at the site of the former Kamloops Residential School last week.

Pairs of small shoes to honour the young lives were laid out by members of the public on the steps of municipal hall Monday as a steady stream of people arrived to pay their respects.

Offering smudging, traditionally a ceremony for purifying or cleansing the soul, for those who attended, Tonia Lenti, a member of the Tsimshian First Nations, told the Optimist the recent discovery simply adds to the thousands of First Nations children across the country who died at residential schools.

“It’s time for Canada to wake up and recognize that these are children. They’re Indigenous children, but they’re also just children. It’s time for us to wake up and come together as a country and hold accountable those who hurt them,” she said.

this time as he is grieving with other First Nations peoples across the continent.

The Optimist also reached out to Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow for comment, but as of yet, has not received a response.

meeting Monday, saying that there are no words to express the profound sense of grief and injustice that Indigenous communities are feeling across the country.

“These children were taken away from their families, their culture, and their lands - never to return home again. This discovery is a painful reminder of the legacy of the residential school system in Canada, and the ongoing need for meaningful reconciliation with our Indigenous peoples,” said Harvie.

Harive added Delta is committed to meaningful reconciliation.

At Monday’s council meeting, councillors endorsed a motion from Harvie to send a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau requesting that immediate action be taken to ensure all former residential school sites in Canada be examined, under the guidance of local First Nations, to find and return home thousands of children who, to this day, remain missing and unaccounted for.

As many others did across the province, local teachers wore orange in a show of support, while students at Delta schools also set up memorials for the young lives lost.

We have needed to become increasingly selective in regards to which organizations we can support.

In many cases, we have had to scale back sponsorships entirely. This, inevitably, adds pressure to the organizations to increase their promotional budgets. Unfortunately, in many cases this is not an option and the fundraising initiatives are canceled altogether.

to hear their stories. This is important learning for all of us,” said the school district.

Delta South MLA Ian Paton said the horrific discovery is absolutely devastating.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Tk’emlups te Secwépemc people led by Chief Rosanne Casimir, as well as all Indigenous peoples who had their children taken from them and sent to residential schools across the country. As the flags at City Hall fly at half-mast, we are reminded of the need to continue working towards meaningful

reconciliation with our Indigenous communities,” Paton said.

The Optimist also reached out to Delta MP Carla Qualtrough for comment.

Qualtrough posted this message on Twitter Monday: “I was heartbroken to hear of the news of the remains of 215 children found at the Kamloops Indian Residential School,” said Qualtrough. “My thoughts are with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation, with residential school survivors, and with the families of the children whose lives were taken.”

The City of Delta welcomed Pride Month with the raising of the signature rainbow flag at city hall Tuesday morning to recognize the global initiative.

The special ceremony was attended by Mayor George Harvie, City Manager Sean McGill, Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord, Delta Fire Chief Guy McKintuck and Delta Pride Society member Christa Horita Kadach.

“For me personally, as mayor and our council, and staff, it’s just so important that we show the Pride community that we are behind them and respect everybody who has the right to who they want to be,” said Harvie.

“That’s what we are celebrating today and that the community knows this is so important.”

The Delta School District was scheduled to raise its Pride Flag on Tuesday morning, but made the decision to postpone until later in the month out of respect to the victims of the former Kamloops Residential School.

“The Canadian flag at the school board office has been lowered to halfmast until further notice.

We plan to raise the Pride flag for at least one week in June, but the date of the flag raising is yet to be confirmed,” said school district spokesperson Cathryn Tucker.

School district clarifies grad gathering rules SANDOR GYARMATI

The Delta School district has issued a letter to parents clarifying the rules for the K-12 system under the province’s restart plan announced last week.

The four-step plan focuses on a safe and gradual return to normal activities with the first step having commenced May 25, which includes some relaxing of provincial restrictions related to gatherings and travel within health regions.

Superintendent Doug Sheppard said the changes, however, do not impact the existing COVID-19 operational and health and safety guidelines for K-12 settings as those remain in place and must continue to be followed for the rest of the school year.

When it comes to graduation events, following consultation with the BC Centre for Disease Control, school districts were informed they can proceed with school sponsored events including graduation ceremonies and other activities that are held on or off of school grounds, but they must continue to follow the previously issued K-12 guidance.

Community organized and private events that aren’t school sponsored must follow the requirements of the recently updated provincial health officer order on gatherings.

These include: • A program for children and youth which can include events such as a safe grad held at a community centre.

The requirements include, but are not lim-

ited to, up to 50 people total, including event staff and volunteers.

No spectators are allowed and people must maintain a two-metre distance from those outside their household, measures are to avoid congregation.

• An outside, seated event which can include events such as group dinners. The requirements for these events include, but are not limited to, up to 50 people total including event staff and volunteers.

Community-organized events must also have a COVID-19 safety plan.

• For personal gatherings, such as those organized among families and friends, up to 10 people are allowed to gather outdoors.

For indoors, up to five visitors or one other household can visit a personal residence.

The City of Delta’s mayor is asking the provincial government to assist with more action to help curb the gang violence plaguing the Lower Mainland.

In a letter last week to Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Mayor George Harvie made a couple of suggestions to immediately enhance public safety as well as curb gang activity in the long-term.

Harvie suggested providing increased daily and weekly coverage of the RCMP Air 1 helicopter. Enhancing aerial coverage will assist with a rapid response to crime scenes and the pursuit of suspects risking public safety on roadways, he

explained.

He noted coverage from noon to 3 a.m., seven days a week, would be ideal.

Harvie also requested the province examine legislation to establish “significant consequences” for vehicle operators in dial-a-dope operations and rental agencies, as well as vehicle owners whose vehicles are involved in illegal activities.

He noted the preferred method for dial-a-dope operations is through delivery services that utilizes cars which, in most cases, are rentals.

The province’s immediate roadside suspension legislation for impaired drivers can serve as an example, said Harvie, adding such legislation would make it difficult for gang mem-

bers to carry out dial-adope activities.

“Public safety is paramount. Resolving the current Lower Mainland District gang conflict requires a combined effort by multiple agencies. By working together and focusing on solutions that address enforcement, education, outreach, and prevention, we can take important steps to protecting our communities,” Harvie wrote.

Delta police are investigation the May 1 daylight shooting of 29-year-old Bikramdeep Randhawa outside the busy Scottsdale Mall.

It’s just one of a string of recent brazen shootings in public places in the Lower Mainland, violence that’s believed to have now spread to Vancouver Island and even into Alberta.

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while in the crosswalk crossing 51st Street in Ladner last Friday afternoon, prompting response from police, fire and paramedics.

Pedestrian struck in Ladner Delta Police were called to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of 51st and 47A in Ladner around 12:50 p.m. last Friday.

DPD say a pedestrian was apparently in the crosswalk, crossing 51st Street when they were struck by a driver. The pedestrian has received

serious injuries, but at this point police do not believe those injuries are life threatening.

“The Delta Police Traffic Section has assumed conduct of the investigation,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf.

The intersection was closed for several hours

Friday as police investigated.

“Police note that the driver involved in this incident is cooperating with police. At this point we cannot comment on the possible causes of the collision, but officers have ruled out driver impairment,” added Leykauf.

The good news is that according to the Fraser Health Authority, as of Tuesday, 76 per cent of Delta adults have been vaccinated with one dose.

And, provincial figures released on Tuesday show that 70.4 per cent of all adults in B.C. and 67 per cent of those 12 and older have now received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

These numbers are great news and reflect the commitment that is being shown to get our shots and get us back to normal as soon as possible.

But there is also some confusion out there when it comes to second shot appointments. This is the bad news.

Our newsroom has received several phone calls and emails from frustrated residents who have received notices to book their second vaccine, but when they have gone online to book, they can’t find any appointments at our two Delta vaccinations sites in Ladner or North Delta.

Digging into this a little deeper, I chatted with my dad, who lives in North Delta. He received a text Monday night advising that he could now book his second shot. He went online Tuesday morning and for some reason it wouldn’t accept his booking, so he phoned in. The person took all his information and said that at the moment both of the Delta clinics were not accepting second bookings as they were still doing first bookings, and weren’t sure when they would have enough vaccine for second doses.

He was told he could wait and see if a Delta booking opened up, but he chose to book as close to Delta as possible. He has a booking for June 17 at a clinic in Surrey.

It begs the question, if you don’t have enough vaccines for second dose appointments at your clinics, why send out notices for second dose bookings?

It’s frustrating to see that despite all our progress, there are still apparent mis-steps by our health officials.

Delta continues to be a leader in food and farming education

I

f you live in Boundary Bay or at the Southlands, chances are you have observed the work that has been done this spring at the Farm Roots field at Boundary Beach elementary school.

If you don’t live in the area, you should definitely make a point of checking it out. It is truly spectacular. A new hoop house has been installed, which will house our tomatoes, cucumbers and other goodies.

Our super delicious Russian Red garlic field is maturing and several rows of Warba potatoes are just beginning to flower, which means a sure sign of summer will be ready for your dinner plate soon.

As usual, none of this would be possible without help from the close knit Delta farming community. The most recent assistance cane from our Southlands neighbour Seann Dory of Salt and Harrow farms who took time from his already busy schedule to bring his tractor over to till half of our field.

As most would know, the Farm Roots program was on hiatus this year partially due to the pandemic but things are shaping up to restart this

important initiative soon.

In the meantime, Farm Roots has joined forces with Vancouver based Fresh Roots to manage the productive farm and the educational component via the “SOYL” program which will see some 20 odd young people working the field and gaining significant working knowledge of farming operations while being paid for their efforts.

It is undeniably important to engage young people in the food message. The food message has been taken for granted for far too long and it is time for parents, educators and the community at large to stress its importance.

Delta has been an innovator

and leader in British Columbia in regard to educating young people about food and farming and will continue to do so.

You can support the ongoing effort to promote agri-literacy in our community by buying your garlic, potatoes and other farm fresh produce at the Farm Roots farm stand this summer.

Farm manager Jack Edgar is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and he will be happy to answer any questions about food and farming that you may have.

For my part, I have been enjoying watching the younger children gain an appreciation and understanding of where their food comes from and it has been, as usual, and absolute delight to watch the young farmers begin to eat food that they have been growing for the past few weeks. The look of wonder in the small faces as they harvest and eat food that they have grown themselves is immensely satisfying.

And to all the parents who have decided to grow their own at the request of their children, thank you all.

Opening the border requires both sides working together

Editor: I want to see the U.S./Canadian border open sooner than later, but let’s face it, the US Federal government is causing the problem.

Last week the Government of Manitoba called on the U.S. and President Joe Biden to share their half billion plus surplus of vaccine. North Dakota has more than enough

vaccine and wanted to truck their excess north, but the U.S. government stopped the shipment.

Why? When the vaccine roll-out began, Canada was forced to go to Europe and India to obtain vaccines, even though much of the vaccine is manufactured a few hundred miles south of our border. Why? U.S. trucks could sig-

nal the opening of the Canada/U.S. border by shipping 50 million or so doses north. All of Canada could be double vaccinated in a matter of weeks.

Just like we teach our kids, sharing is caring.

An open border benefits everyone, so show the love and share the surplus vaccine by shipping it north.

Editor: Less than a year before the pandemic began, before frontline workers became our society’s hailed heroes, they were already mine.

On May 28, 2019 I suffered a cardiac arrest in my front yard. The outlook was very grim for me. In order to survive a cardiac arrest, everything needs to go perfectly, and even then you may not survive. I’ve seen it called the chain of survival, but my understanding is it’s more like threading an impossibly small needle.

I was so very fortunate that day, as excellence

was seen in all who responded to me. From the team of firefighters who initially showed, the EMTs that fought to restore my heartbeat, the police officers who tried to protect my children from seeing the traumatic event unfold, to the cardiac ICU nurses at the RCH who monitored my condition and cared for me through my two day coma. You all got me through to the other side. I made it because of each and every one of you. Change one element, and I likely would not be here today.

I really want to thank the Delta firefighters,

EMTs, and police. I’ll never know your faces, but I will be forever grateful to you for saving my life. It is something I think about every day.

I can’t stress enough the importance of these professionals, the traumas they endure and compartmentalize daily in order to make a difference, help, or even save a life. I hope that when we reach our new normal, society can keep in sharp focus all that these front line workers have done and continue to do.

They are not to be taken for granted.

Stop riding on the sidewalks

Our path should be to evaluate this discomfort Editor: Re: E.W. Bopp letter (Optimist, May 27) I wish I could agree with the “unpopular” sentiments that racism does not exist, that it is a construct created by multicultural legislation for the amusement of decades-long debates and dissension, but I cannot.

Holding this sentiment absolves one of collective guilt and robs society of progress.

Discussions of race will remain pertinent in a

nation as diverse as ours.

The discomfort in talking about race has manifested in a dangerous polarization of radical ideals, as displayed in the Confederate flagbearing vehicle I witnessed outside my child’s elementary school, or the decorative noose hung in a truck in a nearby neighbourhood. Until we can collectively learn how to confront privilege and power without anger and hate, we will remain locked in a pendulum of blame on all sides.

Confronting privilege one has experienced at another group’s historical expense, even if to no personal action of one’s own, causes dissonance.

Racism may feel like a “looking glass” to those who have had privilege to distort the lens of disenfranchised reality marginalized peoples have endured.

Our path should be to evaluate this discomfort without retaliating with antagonism, or worse yet, dismissal.

Ignoring racism not a helpful approach Editor: Re: Letter 25 May 2021: Politically unpopular thoughts about racism E. W. Bopp’s letter cannot go unanswered. So many quotation marks one doesn’t know whether they are for accentuation or attribution, and if attribution to whom.

But I gather her/his argument is that so much attention to racism in our society has actually exacerbated racism, so ignoring it should do the trick. No proof or logic offered, sadly, but lots of

big words and venom.

Ignoring racism on the premise that this will cure itself is not, to my mind, a helpful approach. I have always found that identifying and describing the problem is an essential first step to problem-solving – not sufficient, but necessary. Being honest with oneself and confronting one’s faults is, I feel, more effective an approach than denying the problem and blaming others for the non-problem.

Of course racism has

already taken several generations to get from slavery to where it is, and is going to take several more before it’s no more, but we should feel proud of the progress to date and hopeful of what our collective determination will achieve.

Through this journey there will always be naysayers like E.W. Bopp, but these are best treated as beacons for renewed determination rather than distractions.

And I’m confident this is how most of us see it.

It’s 2021 and for three families of my children’s

elementary school to choose to pull their kids on LGBTQ day shows exactly how intolerant they still are in this day and age.

Off-leash dogs at Boundary Bay foreshore causing problems SANDOR GYARMATI

Additional patrols will be added this summer to make sure people aren’t allowing their off-leash dogs to disturb the wildlife in the foreshore area of Boundary Bay. Having asked staff about what steps should be taken following complaints, Delta council recently got a report on the issue.

That report notes the area has a large intertidal zone at low tide, which increases the challenges related to enforcement of those who let their dogs run freely off-leash.

The jurisdictional boundary of the foreshore area also contributes to the enforcement challenge, the report explains, noting that below the high water mark, provincial officers can enforce regulations with respect to wildlife disturbances.

“Unfortunately, a number of regular users

in the Boundary Bay area are aware of the jurisdictional boundaries and in the absence of on-site patrols by provincial officers, take advantage of low tides to walk their dog off-leash in the foreshore area,” the report notes.

Mayor George Harvie has written to Premier John Horgan and the environment ministry asking for action to stop nature photographers trampling the environmentally sensitive areas at the Brunswick Point Wildlife Management Area.

The request included a regional order to prohibit the harassment of wildlife within all wildlife management areas.

“Such an order would also apply to the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area, which includes the intertidal area of concern that was identified in recent correspondence to council,” the report adds.

“City of Delta bylaw officers and Metro Vancouver Park Rangers have the authority to issue a violation offence for off-leash dogs on the upland portions within Delta property and Metro Vancouver Regional District property respectively; however, catching the offender in the act is often difficult. In general, both Delta and Metro Vancouver staff have practiced education over enforcement. Both Delta and Metro Vancouver staff will seek voluntary compliance if off-leash dogs are observed within intertidal areas outside of each organization’s direct jurisdiction,” the report notes.

“Additional park patrols are being added to the regular complement of Delta bylaw staff this summer. These two additional staff will work evenings and weekends in the parks to undertake education enforcement where necessary in the busiest locations.”

The purpose of Development Variance Permit LU009043 is to vary the following provisions in “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 7600, 2017” for the proposed development:  Section 7.7.3 by reducing the minimum common outdoor amenity space for apartments (for the tower only) from 1,584 m² to 1,222 m²;  Section 8.4.2 by reducing the minimum number of residential parking spaces (for the tower only) from 310 spaces to 287 spaces;  Section 8.4.2 by reducing the minimum number of residential parking spaces (for the rental building only) from 58 spaces to 53 spaces; and  Section 8.4.2 by reducing the minimum number of residential visitor parking spaces from 53 spaces to 47 spaces.

The purpose of Development Permit LU009043 is to regulate the form and character of the proposed development within the Scott Road Corridor (SRC) Development Permit Area.

Delta’s engineering department is exploring how to improve parking for those wanting to go walk the Brunswick Point trail system.

Due to safety concerns, the city earlier this year installed no parking signs on a road near the popular trail at the end of River Road West, but only where parking was never allowed in the first place.

Motorists parking at the edge of the road also made it difficult for large farm vehicles to navigate.

City council then granted early budget approval for construction of a parking area.

A staff report at a recent council workshop notes the dike trail has been a popular destination for recreational users over the years, with a notable increase this past year as a result of the pandemic.

Staff have been working on the detailed

design of the proposed parking area and have been continuing to talk with the local residents including farmers.

The report notes staff have reviewed the possibility of relocating to the south end of 34 Street but it wasn’t seen as a viable option due to a number of reasons, including its narrow width and large ditches, no abil-

ity for vehicles to turn around and the shared road ownership with the Tsawwassen First Nation.

Staff proposed constructing a new parking area at River Road West at 30B Street and limiting existing on-street parking to accessible vehicles.

However, area residents expressed opposition after reviewing the design.

During 2020, reports of increased cycling activity in Canada were prevalent, citing increased sales of bicycles and related equipment. That’s over one million doses region-wide, but there is more work to do, the FHA adds.

The Fraser Health Authority notes that now that everyone aged 12

and over are eligible to register and book for their immunization, mayors across the region are encouraging their residents to get immunized and be the first community to herd immunity.

Fraser Health says, “it is pleased to support the community challenge to see the region be able to put the pandemic behind us, open businesses again and get back to doing the things we have had to sacrifice to respond to this pandemic.”

The challenge will see which community can achieve 70 per cent, 75 per cent and 80 per cent immunization thresholds first, as well as the community that shows the most progress.

Delta park to see hundreds of trees removed SANDOR GYARMATI

A significant number of trees at Tsawwassen’s Winskill Park will have to come down.

The west side of park contains a stand of 596 trees, a notable part of the urban forest in Delta.

The trees are located in an area covering approximately 2.5 hectares and primarily contain cedar, alder and birch trees.

The urban forest was assessed in 2020 as part of the work associated with planning for the future of the Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre.

Park’s Recreation and Culture Director Ken Kuntz confirmed a large number of trees will ultimately need to be replaced over a multiyear period.

He told the Optimist the tree assessment condition report for the forested area west of the sport fields and aquatic centre found many are in a state of decline.

Delta has a replacement plan that it is reviewing with various advisory committees and a detailed plan will come forward to council.

His report to the Parks, Recreation and Culture

Commission notes the assessment identified that all trees inventoried pose a low risk, meaning that immediate removal is not required.

However, 317 trees were noted as being in poor condition, including the vast majority of the 272 mature trees that are 40 years old or more.

His report also notes that pending approval, the Winskill Park Urban Forest Regeneration Plan would be undertaken over a four-year period starting in 2021.

The plan contains several actions including the staged removal of the 317 trees found to be in poor condition, planting of 391 new trees in the western side of the park, reduction of trees on the west end of the existing parking lot adjacent to the aquatic and fitness centre to allow for future parking capacity, as well as retention of a portion of some trees identified

The proposed plan also includes replacement of the pathway and the addition of pathway lighting in the Winskill Park urban forest. for removal to provide wildlife habitat.

The plan also includes using natural materials, partially gathered from the removal of existing trees, for the creation of an outdoor learning space to support com-

munity education opportunities.

Two notable considerations, which will be undertaken in parallel to the implementation of the plan, include the realignment of the existing disc golf course at the

park and upgrades to the existing pathway through the portion of Winskill covered by the plan, the report adds.

Each year of the proposed plan is estimated to cost $100,000 for the removals and replanting.

The staff and residents at Good Samaritans Delta View care home enjoyed some fresh air and exercise while contributing to the IG Wealth Management’s Walk for Alzheimer’s awareness this past Saturday.

This year’s walk marked a particularly special occasion for the East Ladner care home because the South Delta honorary family this year is Michael and Maureen Harbott. Maureen is a resident at Delta View and her husband Michael is an active member on the Families of Delta View council.

“When we started with this disease, there was quite a stigma,” said Michael. “People didn’t

talk about it, but you can’t escape it. By being open, it draws other people to you.”

Arthur Fabian and his rehabilitation team at Delta View planned out the logistics of the walk and made sure that all COVID-19 protocols were in place.

“My team and the residents were excited about this. We have been in training for a couple of weeks, getting the residents outside to exercise and enjoy the spring weather,” he said.

The residents, with the support of the staff walked and wheeled around Delta Views’ beautiful grounds in order to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.

“This is our first outside group activity since COVID and the residents’ spirits are greatly lifted, being part of the walk and knowing that they are making a difference,” said spiritual care coordinator Shirley Carleton.

Recreation therapist Kelly Foston said after all the pandemic has brought to our lives at Delta View, it was nice to be able to honour their residents, and those that live and have lived, with Alzheimer’s.

“We remember and honour them as we are all effected by this disease,” said Foston. “We can still come together, in a safe way, and recognize and support the journey of Alzheimer’s disease.”

Rotary Club plants pollinator garden at Earthwise Spring is in full swing, and the Earthwise Garden is blooming with a rainbow of bold colours, but the vibrant, showy flowers are more than just pleasing to the eye. They serve as an important enticement to bees, birds, and other beneficial creatures.

The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen knows just how important these vibrant gardens are to our pollinating friends, which is why they recently dedicated their time to planting a brand new pollinator garden at

Earthwise.

Ecological urban gardens, such as Earthwise, are becoming increasingly important resources to local wildlife, providing important habitat and rich nectar for bees and other pollinators.

As these critters move around, pollen grains that have attached to their bodies are transported between plants, allowing most flowering plants to reproduce and set fruit. In fact, pollinators are responsible for one of every three bites of food that we eat.

Sadly, pollinator populations are in decline for many reasons, including loss of habitat and pesticide use. Gardens, like the new Rotary Pollinator Garden, will make a big difference to our local pollinator populations. The Rotary Pollinator Garden was designed to provide attractive blooms and a steady source of pollen and nectar throughout the growing season.

Expert weighs in on the lack of honey bees this spring MARK BOOTH

Some adverse weather has led to fewer bees this spring, but there are plenty of ways to attract them to your garden and help them flourish.

That’s the advice of local expert Paul Van Westendorp who happens to be a provincial apiarist for the Government of BC. Bees and other pollinating insects are important for the pollination of plants and food crops that produce fruits, seeds and forage for animal feed.

They also play a key role in maintaining a healthy environment.

“The lack of bees is a complex and diverse answer that is not necessarily local. It’s very broad,” explained the Tsawwassen resident. “If we limit ourselves just to the honey bees for now there’s been a significant increase of winter mortality. It was at first a cool and uncooperative spring, then suddenly we almost had

a heat wave and now it’s cooler again. The arrival of warmer conditions do play a key role when some of these pollinators emerge from their winter sleep if you will. Sometimes these releases are delayed.”

More colour and less pruning in your backyard will enhance the environment for honey bees and help them return.

“The biggest and easiest thing for people to do is change their landscaping practices.

Instead of just for the convenience of plunking down an evergreen tree that will never attract bees, create a garden that has a variety of floral sources that bees can feed on, not just for one little two or four week period but throughout the season,” he said. “The old saying goes in real estate is location, location, location. In this case, it’s planted, planted, planted and the bees will come.

The province has created a website gov.bc.ca/foodforbees that provides information on what are ideal perennials, such as lupine and lavender, to attract wild pollinators.

Van Westendorp does have high praise for the efforts to enhance the bee population in his hometown.

Last September, Delta was declared a “Bee City,” one of just six communities in B.C. and 43 in the country to earn the distinction.

Delta’s zoning bylaw permits beekeeping as an accessory use to single-family and duplex dwellings, and for education purposes in public areas.

A Mason Bee Box program was implemented at a number of city parks back in 2011.

The new Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre includes fruit trees and bee hives, highlighting the importance of pollinators to the agricultural community.

More pollinator-friendly plants are being added to city parks while Delta’s Pesticide Use Bylaw prohibits cosmetic use. Landscaping practices are also an ongoing discussion.

As far as Jane Pallan and Rodger Heringer are concerned, Karel Ley didn’t start a society, she started a family.

It was 25 years ago when Ley launched the Delta Stroke Recovery Society (DSRS) after becoming familiar with a similar program in Richmond.

Her husband had suffered a serious stroke four years earlier that left him in a wheelchair and unable to communicate verbally. It proved to be lifechanging for him and Ley was determined to have something similar in her hometown.

Pallan and Heringer are sure grateful she did.

Today, DSRS is one of the largest branches in the province with 40 stroke survivors, 20 volunteers and 10 caregivers.

It offers a variety of programs: speech pathology, fitness, cognitive activities, next steps mall walk, PERK activities and caregiver support.

Pallan has had two minor strokes with her latest happening three years ago. It was during a physiotherapy session at Peace Arch Hospital she was introduced to DSRS. “I have had so many benefits from the whole program. The leadership and volunteers are fantastic,” said Pallan. “It is amazing and just a wonderful group.”

“For me it’s morning speech sessions, followed by exercises then lunch,” said Haringer. “It’s been really good for me because

I get a lot of speech work in by just talking to a lot of people that you become friends with.”

DSRS operates as an independent registered charity and has a partnership with Stroke Recovery Association of BC and March of Dimes Canada.

“Stroke survivors have their own deficits that they are left with after the stroke. Without the support of the medical system or any resources once at home, they have to try to figure out how they are going to recover to the best of their ability,” explained McAlpine. “Until recently there weren’t a lot of programs to help stroke survivors which is ultimately why Karel decided to start the Delta program.”

McAlpine added candidates for the program can only be referred to DSRS as privacy laws don’t allow the society to reach out to anyone. Instead, it’s typically done through DSRS’s affiliation with the March of Dimes and its nation-wide After

Stroke Program that works with hospitals. “(A DSRS) coordinator would do an assessment with the person to determine their goals and their readiness to reintegrate (into society). Often they are left with a lot of grief and unresolved anxiety,” continued McAlpine. “We talk about their goals and what are the first couple of programs to integrate them into. Hopefully they start to gain confidence and it helps to make the gentle changes to live the life they would like to be living.

“We have people who have been with us over 20 years. They develop a family (here). They develop strong friendships and bonds. They want to come see their friends, maintain their fitness and keep their brain exercising.”

Typically the speech and cognitive sessions would take place at the Tsawwassen United Church, while Tsawwassen Mills (Next Steps Mall Walk) and New

Day Gym (fitness) were used for exercise activities until the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

Now, communication is done through Zoom sessions.

The digital platform at least allows Pallan and Heringer to continue the camaraderie they have built with other participants over the years.

“Not everyone understands what you are going through,” said Pallan. “One of the things that came up in a PERK session where we were brainstorming a bunch of ideas was fatigue and you find out it was common through the entire group. The connections and friendships you make with people are longstanding.”

“You can’t beat person-toperson and I will be looking forward to that again, but thanks to Zoom I have been able to meet people across the nation and internationally too,” added Heringer.

Everyone communicates, but few connect.

This is not only the title of John Maxwell’s bestseller, but a readily recognizable reality.

As someone with ADHD tendencies I am constantly challenged in this area. My mind is whirring a thousand miles an hour and it seems like people talk at 5 mph. Somehow I am supposed to focus on their facial features, their tone, their body language and the words coming out of their mouth. This wouldn’t be as difficult if it weren’t for the fact that I am usually biding my time till I get to talk!

Sounds comical and for the most part it is. Yet I have found that there are many instances where I need to move beyond the casual conversation and push past my self-centred approach. Friends, neighbours, family and

That’s what I see with the many encounters of individuals with Jesus.

Despite his busyness he took time to sit with Nicodemus and help him unpack his confusion. A rich young man sought out his affirmation, but Jesus cut to the core of a troubling issue. A woman

caught in adultery was thrown at his feet and he chased away her accusers. Looking past her transgressions he connected with the hurting person on the inside.

Jesus was a master at using questions to unlock authentic connection.

It’s no wonder that the populace flocked to be near him.

Jesus life is an example well worth emulating.

Delta parks alive with games again Baseball & fastpitch associations will extend their seasons for all players if interest is there MARK BOOTH

It’s at last “game on” and local youth outdoor sports organizations are taking full advantage with the intention to extend their seasons.

Last week’s provincial reopening plan included the immediate return of game action for outdoor sports. If COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations continue to trend in the right direction, indoor sports, such as box lacrosse, can play games too, starting June 15 while as many as 50 spectators will be welcomed back to outdoor games.

It’s a day organized sports have long waited for.

Games haven’t been played since last November when surging COVID numbers introduced further health restrictions and put all sports into practice-only mode for nearly seven months. Organizations anticipated last Tuesday’s announcement by preparing game schedules weeks before.

“Our executive started preparing of what we can do on the fields after the circuit breaker ended and what it potentially would look like.

What we received (in the announcement) was more than what we thought we would be getting so we’re thrilled,” said Delta Fastpitch Association president Lisa Brown-Rooke. “We have official games scheduled for Monday and all our fields are going to be used, which is amazing.”

The Ladner and Tsawwassen baseball associations also were ready for games being allowed again. Schedules have been activated this week in most age group divisions. Only the

“We hit the ground running.

We are ready to go because we have awesome division managers that were sensing something was coming down the line,” said Ladner Minor Baseball president Todd Allan.

The big question now is how far will the 2021 season go?

Typically the season would be over for many at the end of June but this is about making up for lost time which included

the 2020 house season being completely wiped out.

“Our goal is to get many kids playing as possible. If there is an interest, we will run two parallel seasons,” continued Allan. “For example the Mosquito (Division) kids that aren’t playing on the summer ball team can continue to play games twice a week until August.

“Parents haven’t been able to come and watch. Everyone is getting tired of practicing. It’s almost been two years (of no game action) and this is welcomed news.”

“We are running the same

programming as Ladner for the summer,” added Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball president Niki Losse. Along with our summer all-star teams, we will be offering an extended season for our regular house teams, as well as hosting a baseball camp in the first weeks of July.”

Brown-Rooke says there is a good possibility the softball season will now include provincial championships in late summer for the association’s rep teams. The house divisions will also feature the usual yearend weekend wrap tournaments starting at the U8 level.

The box lacrosse season would potentially feature two weeks of game action before limited spectators would be welcomed into the arenas starting July 1. Dry floor availability will play a big part in potentially extending the season with ice installation typically taking place in most venues sometime in August.

Delta Skating Club welcomes new director of skating to staff

Delta Skating Club has welcomed a key, new edition to its instructional staff.

Leeza Shehkhter is taking over as the organization’s Director of Skating for what will be the club’s 62nd season. She has been skating since she was six and knew early on she wanted a career in the sport she loved.

Shehkhter has worked with young skaters since she was 16 and is now a Skate Canada national certified coach. She is always proactively seeking out opportunities to improve her coaching acumen.

In order to bring her best to the ice she currently is studying Sport Science and working on a bachelor’s in physical education and coaching with a specialization in kinesiology.

“As a young figure

skater on the ice I always looked up to the director of the club I was skating at. As I got older and moved from one club to the next, each director had an important piece to play,” explained Shehkhter. “The director was someone to admire, who brings the club together, gives us all motivation and strength.

As I started to coach and gain more experience it became something that I

wanted to be one day.

“I am beyond thankful and grateful that Delta Skating Club is giving me the opportunity to grow the club and live out one of my career goals so early on in life. The love and support I’ve already received from the club and its skaters is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to show the skating world and especially Delta what I can do for them and their skaters.”

Shekhter worked her way up the ranks of figure skating and competed at the senior level.

“Leeza is an amazing rising star in the BC figure skating community.

Her prodigious coaching talent is the greatest gift we can give all our skaters,” added Alex Clarke, Vice President of the Delta Skating Club and BC Coast Region board member.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

GUGGISBERG, Donald Roy January 17, 1938 - May 22, 2021 On May 22nd 2021, the family was saddened to see Donald (Don) Guggisberg pass away after a brave battle with Amyloidosis. He fought his disease with the same persistence and determination that was typical throughout every endeavour during his life.

Don was predeceased by his wife Lin, and is survived by his wife Linda, his four daughters Julia (Randy), Sheri (Doug), Kim (Frank), Kelly (Johnathan) and by Linda’s children, Brandon and Daena, Don’s sister Diane and his nephew Danny.

Don was a proud Papa to 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Brenna, Jordan, Alex, Michael, Marcus, Felix, Xavier, Nathan, Ryley, Kaden, Ziya, Lukas and Levina-Lynn.

Don was born January 17, 1938 in Edmonton Alberta, to Roy and Mary Guggisberg. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Vancouver, BC. Don had a real zest for life. During his 83 years on this planet, there were many pursuits into which he dabbled: attending UBC, teaching elementary school, selling real estate, owning a fish and chip shop, operating a lumber mill, piloting pleasure boats and planes, driving transfer trucks, all the while raising a family in Langley with Lin. His boundless energy and curiosity guided his life making it full of activity, Don enjoyed meeting people and making friends as he and Linda travelled throughout the world.

The Langley Village was Don’s home for the past 1 1/2 years. There he received loving care with compassion and dignity from the Village’s amazing team.

JOHNSON, Harold Lloyd (1926 - 2021) Harold repeatedly said, “I am a blessed man.”

Harold Johnson lived a humble life that reflected his faith that “I am my beloved’s and his desire is towards me” (Song of Solomon 7:10). Harold was born and grew up in Brantford Ontario, the youngest of 5 kids, often claiming his twin sister was older than him. “Chubby was a good boy.” He joined the Canadian Army to serve in WW2. After the war, he attended and graduated from Prairie Bible Institute. He moved to Vancouver where he would he meet the love of his life, Thelma Wilbee, and begin a life of ministry together that would include Baptist pastorates in Cobble Hill, Edmonton, Lloydminister, Maple Ridge, and then administration at Baptist Housing’s Grandview Towers. No matter where they lived, Boundary Bay was a sanctuary for Harold and Thelma since their dating years and it became their home in 1979.

Their door was open and every holiday table held family, friends and the lonely.

After his early retirement Harold continued to serve the church through pulpit supply and holding babies in the church nursery. Harold loved Jesus, his family, singing hymns, hockey, and coffee. “I would do anything for my family if I could” and he embodied that as he entered into each of our worlds and was a presence: be it cheering in the ice rink/ball field, popping by for coffee, or driving us to wherever we needed to be. The myriad of memories we share as an extended family encompasses his humour, compassion and love of life. He often could be heard worshipping, day or night, by quoting Scripture or singing hymns to himself. Despite his multiple brushes with death in his life (drowning, 2 cars totalled, and stabbed in the heart) God chose to take home His beloved Harold peacefully and unexpectedly in the early morning of May 20th at Evergreen Terrace. As unexpected as his graduation into glory was for the family, he has been ready and waiting to see his Lord for a long time. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Thelma, his five children: Joy, Stephen, Philip (Anne), Mark (Tami), Sandy (Randy). Harold is also survived by his 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, his brotherin-law Stan Wilbee, and many nieces and nephews.

A private remembrance will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Evergreen Terrace for the care they gave Harold over this past year. In lieu of flowers, Harold would love if you chose to cultivate gratitude in your life despite your circumstances, that you would intentionally love and bless those less fortunate, and financial donations can be made to the Union Gospel Mission (ugm.ca).

JONES, Dolly (nee Fozard) June 23, 1930 - May 31, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, and grandmother Dolly (Dorothea M.) Jones. Dolly lived in Vancouver and West Vancouver during her younger life and settled in Richmond from 1958 - 2021.

Dolly passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021. She was born in Lethbridge, Alberta to John and Agnes (McCormack) Fozard. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Jack Jones in 2013.

Dolly is survived by her son Dan (Janis), grandson Josh, granddaughter Jennifer (Matt) Imhoff and great granddaughter Madeline.

Thanks to Dr. Gates, the nurses and all staff at the Belvedere Care Centre who helped us through these past four difficult months. The Belvedere staff especially deserve praise for their attention and outstanding care provided to mom. The weekly facetimes and constant status updates were always appreciated by the family.

You will be missed Dolly. Due to the pandemic, there will be no public service. A Private Family only gathering will take place. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the All Children Matter Foundation.

DUCE, George Earnest ‘Rocky’ 1949 - 2021

He was born to George ‘Buster’ and Catherine “Betty” Duce in Fort William, ON. He grew up in South Neebing and then Thunder Bay. He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, and shooting with his little brother Danny. Rocky grew up the eldest of seven siblings; Debby, Donna, Danny, Rhonda, Cathy, and Lora, who collectively remember him being full of life and finding some innocent mischief.

Everyone who knew Rocky, knew that he was a big-hearted man, full of joy and love. He had a laugh that could fill a room and a grin that could fill hearts. He passed on his lighthearted, fun-loving spirit to his children, Janice, Jamie, and Lindsey. As well as his grandkids, numerous nieces and nephews, and everyone else that passed through his life.

He met his wife Theresa in 1983, in Thunder Bay. They moved with Lindsey, then four years old, to BC and lived in the Okanagan briefly, before settling down in Tsawwassen, and then Ladner, BC.

Rocky could make new friends in moments, anywhere. At home, the coffee was always on, and he made everyone feel special and welcome. He worked as a welder, and many years as a drywaller.

He later found a love of driving; as a courier; 5-ton driver and delivering emergency forest fire equipment. Rocky especially loved his Dobermans Miller and later Jager, affectionately calling them his granddogs.

He will be dearly missed by his mother Catherine ‘Betty’ Duce and his wife Theresa Duce. His wonderful children; Janice (Steve) Shewchuk, Jamie Duce (Shannon Butt), and Lindsey Duce.

And surrogate son, Eric Thornton.

Forever loved by his siblings and their families in Thunder Bay: Debby (Larry) Jaggard; Donna (Bill) Bates, Danny (Cheryl) Duce; Rhonda (Glenn) Martyn, Cathy McCrae, and Lora (Jerry) Cronk.

Brother-in-laws; Pat (Marj) Caione and David (Tracey) Onuliak. And his grandchildren, Kenneth, and Hanna Duce. And many of his beloved nieces and nephews. Rocky is predeceased by his father George ‘Buster’ Duce and brother-in law Terry McCrae.

A Celebration of Life will be on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 3pm. Service will be streamed online for family and friends not able to attend.
