Auxiliary donates $512,000 to Delta Hospital

A generous donation of more than $500,000 will help pave the way for the purchase of multiple pieces of equipment at Delta Hospital.

The donation to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation comes from the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society and will support multiple departments including surgical services, the medical department, rehabilitation and long-term care.

“We are very excited to work in collaboration with the Delta Hospital Auxiliary,” said Foundation executive director Lisa Hoglund.

“The unwavering support of their dedicated volunteers is integral to providing the best health care possible at Delta Hospital. We are incredibly grateful for this remarkable gift that will purchase critical equipment.

There’s a new proposal

by Four Winds Brewing Company and Century Group to build a brew facility at the Southlands.

In postings on social media on Monday, Four Winds noted it has been working closely with Century Group for a number of years trying to bring a new brewery and restaurant to the development.

This week, Century Group filed an application with the City of Delta for a development permit for a mixed-use building at the Southlands Market District.

The proposed building complies with the current zoning regulations for the Southlands and meets the expectations the city

set out when it changed the zoning to allow a “brew pub” designation in the Market District, Four Winds states.

Century Group, in a company news release, explained the development will be anchored on Market Avenue with an 8,600-square-foot Four Winds craft brewery and restaurant and will contain 35 residences in the form of garden flats and stacked townhomes.

The company also noted the proposal complies with the current zoning regulations that pertain to Southlands.

“We have been talking with the Mills’ family for a number of years now about bringing Four Winds to Southlands to create a social gathering place for the local community that focuses

on our aligned passion around local food and agriculture,” Century Group president Sean Hodgins explained. “We are pleased we were able to plan a mixeduse building that not only creates a wonderful social space with Four Winds’ excellent food and beverage offerings that are all about local farming and food, but also one that can accommodate homes for families at all stages of their lives.

“Moreover, it meets the requirements of the City’s zoning and is totally in keeping with our commitment to excellence in neighbourhood planning and the unique Neo-Traditional architecture that now defines Southlands.”

Company’s Adam Mills said he and his brother Brent have been involved with Century Group in designing a mixed-use building that meets Delta’s expectations.

He said the proposed building limits their brewing facility at Southlands to just under 2,600 square feet, but provides the ideal space for a small batch specialty brewhouse and restaurant.

“We look forward to highlighting local while furthering our culinary explorations and community engagement,” added Mills. “We’ve long had this vision of being part of the unique Southlands community.

We know that it will take a couple of years to construct the building. Like many of our customers,

we can hardly wait to be sitting down, looking out over Southlands’ fields while enjoying a beer and great food with our neighbours and friends.”

In 2019, city council voted 4-3 to defeat a previous proposal

by Four Winds and Century that would have seen a new brewery and eatery housed in a 30,000-square-foot building at the Tsawwassen development.

That proposal to build a craft brewery and 200seat restaurant in the commercial component of the Southlands would have contained the brewing and bottling part of the operation, while the warehousing and distribution would have been handled at an industrial location elsewhere.

Hundreds turned out for a solemn vigil at the Scottsdale Centre mall parking lot in North Delta Friday evening to remember murder victim Bikramdeep Randhawa.

Huge year-to-year jumps for Delta house prices

House prices continue their sharp upward trajectory in the City of Delta.

According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver’s sales figures for April, home sellers have become increasingly active in Metro Vancouver’s housing market this spring in response to heightened demand and rising home values that have materialized during the pandemic.

The benchmark price for a single-detached house in Ladner last month was $1,270,600.

That’s up 5.4 per cent from the previous month and 29.5 per cent from April 2020.

The benchmark for a house in Tsawwassen was $1,348,500, up almost three percent from March and 22.2 per

Meanwhile, the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board

says while sales dipped slightly last month compared to March, the 2020/21 pandemic seller’s market in the Fraser Valley has now surpassed the previous longest stretch of seven consecutive, recordbreaking months, last set in 2015/16.

The benchmark for a single-detached house in North Delta in April was $1,207,700, up 6.5 per cent from the previous month and 30.3 per cent over the year.

It’s about having more much-needed healthcare workers available, not having more beds.

That’s how Fraser Health board chair Jim Sinclair summed up the province’s decision to put off elective surgeries again as COVID-19 hospitalizations placed heavy pressure on the healthcare system.

During the health region’s online board meeting last Tuesday, Sinclair provided an update on the COVID-19 situation, including numbers in hospitals and in their intensive care units, as well as where elective surgeries could be headed.

“We did not make that decision lightly, we kept

it going as long as we could because those were important surgeries. Last time we closed it down in the spring immediately and we were 15,000-to18,000 surgeries behind that we were catching up, and we were doing an excellent job doing that. But we’ve had to close them down again, unfortunately, and that’s because it’s not about the bed space, we need the people,” Sinclair said.

“Healthcare is about people and we need those doctors and those support workers to be able to do the work that we’re doing.”

Sinclair described some of the challenges facing Fraser Health including the region being the largest in the province at 1.8 million people, also having the

largest infection rate.

He noted that’s because factories including food processing, manufacturing and other facilities, as well as farms, are mostly located in the region, and it’s in Fraser Health where frontline workers live and work.

He noted that in the past 14 months, more than 1,000 worksites in the region had COVID19 exposures, including more than 300 in the past month with many having to close.

As far as when the region hopes to catch up its elective surgeries, Sinclair later explained that when they started again, many could be held on weekends and evenings in order to help catch up with the backlog.

“They may be called

elective because they’re not urgent but they’re very important, and sometimes they’re lifesaving surgeries, so, we don’t know when those will be open again, but since reopening surgeries, our health authority has led the province in terms of coming back up to where we were and actually increasing the number of surgeries that we were doing,” he added.

“That’s in a time when there was a pandemic.

The vision of this government is to move those surgeries up about 30 per cent more and start operating in the evenings and the weekend. We recognize surgery is critical for people’s well-being, not only their health but ability to function, be mobile and part of the community.”

That’s what Fraser Health board chair Jim Sinclair noted about the much-maligned COVID19 vaccine pop up clinics that were held recently in high transmission neighbourhoods.

Sinclair, during the FHA’s board of directors’ online meeting last Tuesday, answered a question from the public on whether the health region will try holding the first-come-first-

serve clinics again and how people, especially those with language barriers, could be informed in advance.

Not needing appointments, many hundreds of people showed up, standing for hours hoping to get the AstraZeneca vaccine, with many at the end of the lines being turned away.

Sinclair said the region is not planning on holding any more such clinics for the time being until logistical issues can be worked out.

He noted the biggest

challenge the region faces is getting people in the so called “hot spot” areas within the region vaccinated, which prompted the drop-in clinics in the first place.

“I personally believe that there will be a time, perhaps, when we do that again, because we do have to reach out and get people to sign up and be part of this,” he said.

Sinclair noted those 40 and over in these highhigh-transmission areas can sign up for vaccine appointments: North Delta, East Newton,

North Surrey, Panorama, South Langley Township, West Newton, Whalley, Fleetwood, Port Coquitlam and West Abbotsford.

B.C.’s immunization program is getting a boost this month with the province to receive a record number of vaccines for a one-month period.

Covered multi-sport court coming to Ladner SANDOR GYARMATI

Construction will begin this summer on a new covered outdoor sports court in Ladner.

That’s according to the City of Delta, which provided an update last week on the current outdoor lacrosse box, which is to become a covered facility thanks to a $1 million grant from the Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program.

The grant is part of a $100-million provincially funded umbrella program, which provides a one-time infrastructure funding grant to communities for shovel-ready projects.

Having an estimated price tag of $1.9 million, the Delta sport court weather protection covering will provide signifi-

cantly more hours of use for the facility, additional hours that would relieve the demand on arenas during seasonal changes.

It will be a great facility for trainers and coaches of athletes at all levels.

In addition to lacrosse, it will also act as a training facility for sports such as baseball and soccer and will include basketball nets for more informal play.

Noting work will begin this July, a news release from the city says having a covered outdoor multi-sport court will allow residents who have

limited access to indoor spaces and the opportunity to enjoy a variety of recreation opportunities year-round.

“Over the past year, we have seen how important outdoor activity is for maintaining physical and mental health and overall well-being.

Converting the outdoor lacrosse box into a covered facility will allow sport groups and the public to participate in outdoor activities yearround. It will also be a great facility for trainers and coaches of athletes of all levels,” said Mayor George Harvie. “The City and the region will see many positive benefits from these improvements, and we thank the Province for its investment in our community.”

The project is scheduled for completion by spring 2022.

T

his week is National Nursing Week (May 10 to 16).

It’s a chance to recognize nurses from coast-to-coast for their dedication and sac-

rifice.

The past year and a half has shown all of us how important nurses and medical personnel are. The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the courage and commitment that nurses bring to their jobs every day and has shown all of us just how vital and important they are.

The Canadian Nurses Association has selected We Answer The Call as this year’s theme. It is fitting as it showcases the many roles that nurses play in one’s health-care journey.

In today’s print edition of the Optimist, you will see that several of our advertisers have chosen to use their space to thank nurses in our community for all that they do.

We echo that message and offer our thanks as well. We certainly don’t know where we would be at in this pandemic without you.

Auxiliary volunteers’ step-up

And while we are thanking nurses this week, I’m also sending kudos to other vital folks in our healthcare system here in Delta.

The amazing Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society presented a cheque for $512,000 to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation earlier this week.

The money will be used to purchase several vital pieces of equipment for Delta Hospital.

Delta has one of the most successful hospital auxiliaries in the province.

Since 1969 their entrepreneurial spirit and volunteerism has provided patient care, comfort and much-needed funds to support patients and their care at our hospital.

The Auxiliary boasts more than 400 members who donate close to 100,000 hours a year.

In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic and having to shutter its Dogwood Gift Shop, Courtyard Café, the Delta Auxiliary Thrift Store (which also couldn’t open up in January following a fire), volunteers pressed on and found a way to still give back in a meaningful way.

udos to Delta council for passing the backyard chicken bylaw recently. Thanks also to resident Kristin Roberts who has been working hard to promote the idea to me and fellow Agricultural Advisory Committee members.

Roberts is also a bee keeper and tends the hives at the Farm Roots farm. Recently, she purchased a portable hive and was able to bring it to one of the schools on Earth Day to talk all things bees and pollination with my Project Pickle kids. The kids all got to taste the delicious honey right of the hive.

Last week was cucumber week at school farms across the region and 1,200 Marketmore cucumber seed were planted into seed trays and delivered to the greenhouse to sit for a few weeks. In last week’s lessons we talked about greenhouses, the greenhouse business in Delta, growing mediums and why some vegetables stand a better chance of survival if planted as seedlings.

As usual, we tasted what we planted, and about six dozen cucumbers were consumed in “Farmer Mikes’ most excellent cucumber salad”, which was served from the back of my pick-

up truck. Peeled Marketmore cucumbers, white wine vinegar, pink salt and chopped basil takes no time to make and it is simple and delicious. With a little more vinegar at home, a jar of these delicacies makes a great quick pickle that will last several days in the fridge.

With the Mother’s Day weekend approaching, I asked the young farmers to consider making the salad at home to help out their families in the kitchen. As I write today (May 11) I am happy to report that several of them did just that.

Many of the children from grades one to seven enjoyed the experience and were happy to share their pride with me and their teachers.

This week’s culinary adventure revolves around Arugula.

Arugula is super easy to grow and is delicious on pizza, in soup, and in any salad combination you can possibly imagine. Originally from the Mediterranean region, its nutty, peppery taste is unique and provides an excellent opportunity to teach young people about palette matching and avoiding emptying the ranch jar all over vegetables. I use sliced strawberries as the balance for serving this salad.

Teachers and assistants use gloves to hand out a couple of strawberry slices and a few sprigs of baby Arugula. The kids are instructed to put both in their mouth at the same time and chow down.

I have been amazed over the years watching kids who have never heard of Arugula enjoy this sweet and savory combo.

Growing vegetables at home, keeping bees, and now chickens, can afford families and children incredible learning opportunities for life skill development that will most certainly be passed on to future generations.

Racist encounter troubling

Local lifeline program goes above and beyond

Editor: I wanted to share an experience that my husband and I had.

In early April my husband and I were taking a walk with our nine-month-old daughter down 48th Ave. in Ladner. Up ahead there was an elderly woman and man crossing the street and I heard the word “abomination.”

At first I thought that I had imagined it, however, she grabbed her husband’s sleeve and pointed directly at us and said “look at that abomination.”

Shocked, appalled, angry and hurt, I was thinking is this some kind of joke? Was she speaking about the fact that I am in a biracial marriage or was she ref-

erencing the product of it…my beautiful daughter with her dark curly hair and her chubby brown cheeks?

I wanted to confront this woman who so brazenly voiced her disgust, however my husband (who is African) told me with a somber look on his face to drop it; that they were old and I should leave them be.

On some level when we walk together disapproval or disgust are displayed passively, some people do not return our greetings and avert their gaze, some even cross the street to avoid us completely.

However, when I walk without my husband, I am greeted warmly as usual. Somehow, I cannot seem to get used to

this racism. Sadly, my husband experiences racism almost daily on some level and still manages to deal with it with patience and grace.

In a country where we brag about multiculturalism and acceptance, this behaviour is the opposite. When we say multiculturalism are we only speaking about people from different countries whose skin happens to be the same colour as ours?

Seems that way. I hope that there can be some change. I hope that by the time my daughter is grown enough to understand, she will not be judged by the colour of her skin.

Come on Ladner, let’s do better.

City works remedies bike trails

Since 1988, the Lifeline program run out of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society has been helping local seniors and patients who live alone or managing a medical condition. For many, the medical alert service, which provides 24-hour help at the push of a button, is a necessary part of their day-to-day life.

Editor: Thanks to the prompt efforts of the Director of Engineering Steven Lan and the work crews, the entire stretch of the Brunswick Point Dike Trail along with the adjacent River Road dike trail between 34th and 30B St., have been entirely

repaired and resurfaced with proper aggregate and re-compacted resulting in them being once again useable for cyclists and strollers along with being much easier to walk and run on.

Special thanks to councillor and former Mayor Lois Jackson for

her assistance and guidance helping to get this resolved.

doing this successfully for years and while we can all experience a lousy neighbour, that’s what bylaw enforcement is for.

The research and data, if one cares to read it, fully supports far more community benefits than negatives.

I do not feel that Delta

understands the implications of backyard chickens.

I hope that any resident in my area who decides to raise chickens keeps an eye out for the local racoons and rats. These critters like to drink out of the local

ditch.

I suggest that residents complain to Delta Bylaws if the birds become a nuisance. Cleanliness will be absolutely necessary in order to prevent odor and vermin.

Focus on service delivery Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society Lifeline is more than a help button. This past year, the local program has not skipped a beat and continues to conduct personal in-home installations and maintenance calls for new and existing customers.

“Seniors are at the heart of our service delivery,” says Danielle Dodds, program manager. “It starts with our local volunteers who help to keep our program running. Their dedication to our Lifeline program and customers shows in everything they do. With PPE and social distancing protocols in place, they ensure Lifeline is still accessible to those who need it, and we are grateful to have them on our team.”

When it comes to monitoring their customers, the service is also designed around the needs of older adults. Lifeline specializes in medical alarms and their response centre agents receive 240 hours of training, along with annual recertification. Customers choose who is on their list to respond if they push their button for help. Assistance can come in the form of neighbours or loved ones, not just EMS (Emergency Services). “In fact, last year, more than a third of the alarms for our Lifeline program did not require EMS to respond,” says Dodds. “This demonstrates that Lifeline is also a way for seniors to connect with loved ones when they need support or reassurance. It’s not only for emergencies.”

Something is blooming in sunny Tsawwassen.

The Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA) has launched a Tsawwassen Blooms campaign, which will add vibrancy and colour to the commercial business district from May through August.

The campaign will see a stunning display of flowerpots created out of pool noodles, which will be moved to two different locations per month.

Pictures of the displays will be posted to Instagram as well as Twitter and TBIA is encouraging people to visit the displays and share their photos using the hashtag #tsawwassenblooms. Anyone who posts will be entered to win a weekly prize of a gift card to a Tsawwassen businesses and a Tsawwassen Blooms tote.

The tote invites people to ‘fill with local’ and shares a message of thanks to the community for their ongoing support of shopping local small businesses.

“Our Tsawwassen Blooms are a vibrant art activation that will

be touring our commercial district of Sunny Tsawwassen from now until the end of the summer,” said TBIA executive director Michelle Barlow.

“Our larger-than-life flower pots are bursting with colour and whimsy, creating fun spaces for our community to enjoy while they visit the shops and services in Sunny Tsawwassen.”

Barlow said by moving to different locations around the community each month, it helps to encourage residents to explore the unique shopping district that Tsawwassen has to offer.

“Perhaps people will discover businesses they have never seen before or visit an area of our commercial district that they don’t normally frequent,” she said. “Most of our locations will be paired with seating so that people can enjoy their takeout from nearby restaurants while they enjoy our blooms.

“It’s about connecting our community with our local small businesses through placemaking and if it brings some fun and joy into an everyday task like shopping for groceries how great would that be,” Barlow added.

Ladner break-ins prompt warning from Delta police IAN JACQUES

A string of overnight and early morning break-ins in Ladner has prompted a warning to residents to lock their doors and secure their windows.

DPD were notified of two break and enters, and what appears to be a third attempted break and enter along Frigate and Ferry Roads in Ladner last Thursday.

Police received a report around 5 a.m. from a neighbour of a suspicious person rummaging through vehicles parked in a driveway on Frigate Road. Police attended right away and alerted the residents, while other officers began searching for a suspect.

After speaking with the residents about the break-in to their vehicles,

both police and the residents realized that someone had apparently entered the home earlier that morning, while the residents were asleep.

Several items were noted to be missing. The point of entry was determined to be a window on the main floor.

Around 5:30 a.m. a 9-1-1 call was made about a break and enter in progress on Ferry Road. Police arrived on scene immediately, as they were already in the area, looking for a suspect from the earlier break-in.

In this instance a resident was actually woken up, with the realization that an intruder was in their home. The resident yelled at the intruder, scaring him, causing him to flee the home.

It is believed that a door may have been accidentally left unlocked in this instance. Nothing

appeared to have been stolen, as the suspect was interrupted.

“It would have been rather shocking for the residents in both these situations, particularly for the individual who actually confronted the suspect,” said Insp.

Ciaran Feenan, head of patrol services for DPD. “It’s definitely a violation to realize that your home has been broken into, particularly when you are there during the break-in.”

Feenan added this type of crime is relatively uncommon in Delta, for someone to break in while a home is occupied.

“Unfortunately, although we had a significant police response to the area, we weren’t able to locate the suspect,” said Feenan, adding the investigation is well underway.

The City of Delta is asking the federal government to ensure those with visual impairments don’t lose access to specialized books.

Council recently endorsed a staff recommendation to ask Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, and MP Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, for sustainable funding for the Centre for Equitable Library Access and the National Network for Equitable Library Services to support the continued production of accessible reading materials for Canadians with print reading disabilities.

The Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) and the National Network for Equitable Library Services (NNELS) use the funding to convert books into such accessible formats

as audiobooks or braille books, which are provided to public libraries.

The federal government’s 2020 Fall Economic Statement included an announcement of cuts to funding for accessible book production for those with print disabilities.

Both organizations receive combined annual funding of $4 million from the government, which planned to reduce the funding by $1 million annually beginning in 2021 before ending entirely in 2024/25.

Last month, Scott Hargrove, CEO of the Fraser Valley Regional Library, reached out to library board members asking municipalities to support a campaign to urge the federal government to reverse the plan.

Qualtrough then met with representatives from CELA and NNELS, and later announced this year’s funding cut was reversed.

“The loss of funding would have immediate and devastating impacts for those who have print disabilities. For CELA, there would be a significant reduction in its ability to produce and distribute new materials, including audio CDs and braille, and for NNELS, there would be a significant reduction in the scope of accessible publishing work being done, and a reduction in staff, many of whom have print disabilities,” the report adds.

The potential loss of future funding would also further compound the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is already having a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities, the report notes.

A group of Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts visited a Tsawwassen neighbourhood last week to provide a special birthday surprise.

said ride organizer Owen Barclay. “I lost my son 11 years ago. I know this isn’t the same, but it’s just as significant and sudden. It’s just nice to give back, especially during these times when people are struggling.”

Spot prawn season allows Chung family to continue Ladner tradition MARK BOOTH

For decades the Chungs were known for selling freshly-caught wild salmon right off the Government Dock in Ladner. Now a family member is continuing that tradition with a different twist.

For the second straight year, Darin Chung will be selling spot prawns, starting on Saturday (May 15), a day after the season officially opens on the B.C. coast. He will be there daily right until the end of the season which can last up to 40 days.

“Salmon has been very difficult for about the last 10 years. We just don’t get to fish that much anymore,” explained the Ladner fisherman. “The Fraser River gets opened once every four years if we are lucky. We have to go all the way up to

Prince Rupert and all over the west coast to get wild salmon. Really, there is very little out there.”

The scarcity eventually led to Chung and his fishing partner changing course. They launched their own business BC Live Spot Prawns and Seafood, based right here in Ladner.

“Spot prawn fishing is very difficult and neither of us had the experience in doing spot prawns,” Chung added. “A couple of friends gave us tips and help along the way.”

Chung is taking care of the business side of the operations which included launching a website. He also brought the spot prawn sales to the Ladner dock and the response was better than he imagined.

“We figured it would be great to get some spot prawns into Ladner because before you

would have to go to Steveston,” he explained.

“We had huge line-ups with COVID safety and drew people from far away as Chilliwack and Hope. Ladner hasn’t had much of a chance to get any seafood and my vision is to build it up to what Steveston is. Just having the experience of

Chung added the pandemic has presented its challenges including limited orders from restaurants that are dealing with far less capacity due to the current health restrictions. It has also prompted the business

to offer home deliveries, especially for the elderly that are reluctant to stand in line-ups.

He is confident spot prawn fishing won’t go the same route of the salmon season in the years ahead.

“Spot Prawns are much more stable because the way it’s managed,”

said Chung. “Basically you are allowed to fish a maximum 300 traps.

It’s an open derby style fishing where the (the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada) go around and do a spawner index. If things aren’t looking good certain areas they will shut it down.”

Delta council has agreed with a staff recommendation to proceed with public consultation for a new application to build an apartment complex in Tsawwassen.

The proposal would see the 48-unit market rental apartment building at 1467-56 St., located at a vacant lot formerly occupied by a gas station.

Prior to making a formal application, Bosa Properties and their consultant engaged in a preapplication review process with Delta to refine aspects of the proposal and introduced the project at a council workshop in February, a planning department report notes.

The apartment building would comprise five storeys including two levels of parking.

Pedestrian entry would be from 14B Avenue at the northeast corner of the building, while vehicular access to the parkade would be from 14B Avenue.

The application is at a preliminary stage and aspects of the proposal may change in response to a detailed staff review as well as council or community comments.

The application requires an amendment to the Official Community Plan to exempt the maximum permitted unit density, floor space ratio and height for the area.

The report also notes the Delta Housing Be Mine Society has approached the city to ask if the applicant would consider allocating housing units within the development for persons with intellectual disabilities.

A prolific poet and consummate community volunteer has been bestowed with a national award.

South Delta’s Jean Kay, who has written a poem every day for the past 23-plus years, was recently presented with the prestigious Alan Sangster Award for Exceptional Contribution to the Canadian Authors Association (CAA), one of the oldest writing establishments in Canada, celebrating 100 years this year.

Kay was presented with the award at an Association Zoom meeting during National Volunteer Week and received the award from her husband Jerry, who she says, secretly stashed away the award and kept it secret until the presentation.

And to top off the surprise and the honour, the CAA announced the creation of a new award for

volunteering at the branch level beginning next year with the award to be called The Jean Kay Award.

“I was completely surprised, humbled, honored, and delighted when they presented me with the Alan Sangster Award,” said Kay. “Then the other honour about the new award, well I was speechless. This is a huge honor for me.

I feel very blessed and grateful.”

The Alan Sangster Award was created in 1968 and honours volunteerism at the national level in creative ways. Prior to this year, the award had not been awarded since 2014.

“The process of finding that volunteer to be recognized relied on people who had won it before, so it kind of fell through the cracks, but they wanted to bring it back and this was the year they brought it back,” Kay said. “I’ve been a member for 21 years and, yes I have put in thousands of hours, but it has been a labour of love.”

Besides her countless hours volunteering with the CAA, Kay also volunteers at KinVillage and has had one of her poems in the KinVillage newsletter monthly since November 2002. She also volunteers with the Elder College Singers.

She says she has always had a passion for writing and volunteerism.

“Having a positive attitude and wanting to give back. The motto for Canadian Authors is writers helping writers and we certainly do that on a regular basis,” she said.

“I’m met so many wonderful people over the years. The camaraderie is a huge part of Canadian Authors. It’s writers at every level – experienced, or new, so anyone can join and learn from each other.

It has always been something worthwhile and I find, even as a poet, I learn from everyone on a regular basis. There is always a gem in the way they do things that is beneficial.”

Sidekick hits the Zoom stage once again Three’s a charm and that is what Sidekick Players are hoping for with their third Zoom performance.

Director Carroll Lefebvre has put together a stellar cast of Sidekick favourites for another Norm Foster play, Halfway There.

“We’ve named this the Sidekick Foster Zoom Fest,” said Lefebvre. “Our audiences love his work. His scripts are funny and poignant. There are always a lot of laughs and several life lessons in each one.

Halfway There is no exception.”

The action is set in Junior’s diner in the town of Stewiacke, N.S., whose claim to fame is that it is exactly halfway between the North Pole and the equator. The town itself now admits that due to more accurate measurements, the

Every day at 4:30 p.m. three women gather at the diner for a Kaffeeklatsch with their friend and waitress Janine (Marcia Strang). Together Violet (Brenda DeJong), Rita (Carol Jones) and Mary Ellen (Cathy Collis) update each other on their private lives and rake over the town’s gossip.

As Janine says, “There are no

secrets in Stewiacke.”

What stirs things up is the arrival of a handsome new doctor Sean Merritt (Mark East), who will take over the town’s regular doctor’s practice for a month while he is away on missionary work.

Foster’s characters may seem at first to be a simple collection of types.

Rita is the vamp, Vi the wiseacre, Mary Ellen the mousy

one, Janine the sensible one and Sean the bashful guy. The more we get to know each character the more we find how radically their private lives and thoughts contrast with how we have labelled them.

Foster is aware that the face people wear in private is not always the same face they wear in public and, as we discover, some of the jolliest of the characters are concealing the great-

est unhappiness.

Halfway There will be presented in Zoom theatre, Saturday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m.

“Our first two plays were very successfully attended with over 100 people at each one,” said Lefebvre. “I have no doubt this one will be just as popular.”

Patrons must register with Sidekick to attend. There is no admission cost, although donations will be greatly appreciated.

“We’ve not asked for any money at all, but many patrons have enquired how they can pay something, so we’re offering that option with this play,” she said.

It’s time for another adventure for Roxi the Rescue Dog. Last week, South Delta author Carolyn Drew launched the fifth book in her Roxi the Rescue Dog humane education children’s book series.

Her newest book, Roxi the Rescue Dog Helps the Cows, is an age-appropriate animal rights story that raises awareness of factory farming and dairy cows used for milk.

An entertaining story that empowers kids to make compassionate life choices by trying plantbased milks, this story is full of kid-friendly content, bright illustrations, and humourous happenings as Roxi gets into mischief along the way.

Drew: “Roxi is a rescue dog with a nice life. She wants all the animals in the world to have a nice life too. In this story, Roxi heads down Cow-MOO Road where she finds happy cows and sad cows. With her Superhero powers and her message about kindness, can Roxi save the sad dairy cows?”

As reported previously in the Optimist, Drew created the Roxi series to raise awareness of animal welfare issues around the world. She hopes to reduce animal cruelty through humane education and compassionate messaging.

“When I started I did have some ideas of other animals that I could maybe help with some books, but I didn’t know how receptive the books would be,” she said.

“Every time I released

a book, I received more and more input, I learned more, got encouragement from people and to see an actual product complete that encouraged me to press on. I do dive deeper into the moral and ethical issues as I have moved along.

This is my first all vegan book, which is quite a step. It will appeal to some people and not others, but that’s important to me. I’m excited to see where this one goes because it does touch upon the vegan aspect and animal welfare.”

Purchase a food grade and BPA-free plastic storage container that can accommodate the volume

of food and has an airtight lid to maintain freshness.

Grassland set-asides – a practical solution to soil degradation, biodiversity loss and more DREW BONDAR

Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust (DF&WT) has been working in partnership with farmers in the Fraser River estuary for almost three decades.

A lot has changed since our humble beginnings, but our commitment to working directly with the agricultural community to find solutions for some of society’s

most pressing issues, including soil degradation and biodiversity loss, remains.

Grassland set-asides — one of many stewardship practices the DF&WT promotes —provide critical habitat for birds of prey while restoring soil fertility.

Set-aside fields are planted to a mix of grasses and broad-leaved plants, and left to rest for up to six years. To pro-

mote the planting of setasides, which resemble the historical tall-grass habitats of the estuary, DF&WT offers a $400/ acre cost-share. Since the mid-1990s, more than 13,600 acres (5,504 ha) of set-asides (1.6x the size of Burns Bog) have been established.

Recently completed winter surveys reinforce the high value of these fields for wildlife. Surveys found significantly

higher raptor/heron use and species diversity in set-asides compared to annual crop fields.

Raptors — including multiple species-at-risk — spent 16x more time in set-asides compared to annual crop fields!

The Fraser River estuary supports the greatest abundance and diversity of raptors in Canada over the winter season, which makes the availability of their preferred grassland

habitat that much more important. However, grassland set-asides are becoming more challenging for farmers to incorporate into their crop rotations due to rising costs including rental rates of farmland that, in some cases, have reached a staggering $500$1,000/acre.

The economic realities for many farmers often make wildlife habitat an afterthought without financial support to assist

with costs.

The unique partnership between DF&WT and local farmers has demonstrated what’s possible when the costs associated with taking care of the land do not fall solely on the backs of a few farmers but instead are shared by all of society.

Adding children to your house or bank account – a cautionary tale DAVID SEVERIDE

A potentially tragic consequence of the probate tax of 1.4 per cent that your estate must pay on the fair market value of your house and other assets when you die is that many people are taking steps to avoid that tax which too often results in some nasty financial, legal and relationship consequences.

The typical scenario is that an elderly parent, realizing that their children will have their inheritance reduced by the 1.4 per cent probate tax, decides to avoid the tax by adding the children to the title to their house and possibly bank and investment accounts as well. This is legally called “joint tenancy”, but could just as easily be described as “total lunacy.”

clear title house to do some (post COVID-19) world travel and so you apply for a reverse mortgage, but the adult child that you added as a joint owner of your house is going through a messy divorce and your home now has a lien against it, ruining your travel plans.

earned savings and you have to initiate legal action against them to put an end to it and hope to recover some of your money.

It goes without saying that in all of the above scenarios, and many others that are similar, your relationship with your adult children is permanently damaged and often leads to a total estrangement that results in you changing your Will to disinherit those children. Then, when you die, the same children may contest your Will to claim their “fair share” of your estate.

There are some situations, rare in my view, where owning property and bank accounts jointly with adult children may be appropriate, but you should seek legal advice before embarking down that road, which is certainly filled with many potholes.

This person should be willing to serve and be capable of executing the will.

People who die without a valid will become intestate. This means the estate will be settled based on the laws of where that person lived, and a courtappointed administrator will serve in the capacity to transfer property.

This administrator will be bound by laws and may make decisions that go against the decedent’s wishes. To avoid this outcome, a will and other estate planning documents are crucial.

Probate process verifies a will is real under B.C. laws.

Whether a will needs to be probated or not depends on the agencies and financial institutions that hold assets within an estate – they may require that a will is probated before the assets are distributed or accessed by anyone.

For example, if your uncle kept the majority of his savings in a local credit union, that credit union may require you to prove his will is legitimate under B.C. law before you withdraw his remaining funds.

If you are unsure whether or not a will must be probated, you may wish to seek legal

advice.

Sometimes institutions like banks will also require a representation grant (also sometimes called an estate grant).

This is a document that says you have been legally proven to be the executor named in the will.

An application for a representation grant may be made in any Supreme Court registry.

Turning your decisions over to a power of attorney

There are certain instances in which you may choose to appoint a substitute decision-maker, such as a power of attorney for financial decisions. For example, you may give a trusted relative or friend the power of attorney to cash your Old Age Security cheques for you while you’re out of town.

More often, appointing a substitute decisionmaker is about incapacity planning. It’s not pleasant to think there may be a time when you’re unable to make certain decisions for yourself, however, it makes good sense to plan for such a time, just in case. That way, trusted family members or friends will be able to make legal, financial or medical decisions for you according to your wishes.

A power of attorney is a legal document that appoints another person, called an “attorney,” to

deal with your business and property and to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf. A power of attorney can be very specific or very broad.

A power of attorney ends if you become mentally incapable. If you want the power of attorney to continue even if you become mentally incapable of making financial decisions, you should make an enduring power of attorney.

An enduring power of attorney is a legal document that appoints another person to make financial and legal decisions for you. An enduring power of attorney will continue even if you become mentally incapable of making decisions. It is different from an ordinary (non-enduring) power of attorney, which ends if you become mentally incapable.

A committee (guardian for an adult) makes decisions for another adult who is not mentally capable of making decisions about his or her own health care and personal affairs, and/or financial and legal affairs. If you become mentally incapable and have not already named someone to make decisions for you, the B.C. Supreme Court may appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf.

The Public Guardian and Trustee of B.C. may also be appointed as committee to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf, or may appoint another person to act as temporary substitute decision-maker for you.

Lifelong teammates selected in CFL Draft

A pair of former South Delta Sun Devil standouts and lifelong teammates are continuing their Alberta football journey to potential pro careers.

Grant McDonald was selected in the second round (14th overall) by the Edmonton Football Club in last week’s CFL Draft. Minutes later, Charlie Moore went in the third round (26th overall) to the Calgary Stampeders.

Both were key starting linebackers when the University of Calgary Dinos captured the 2019 Vanier Cup national championship. They also had leading roles in the Sun Devils winning their first provincial title at the “AAA” level in 2014.

“It’s a dream come true for me,” said Moore. “This will be the first time Grant and I won’t be teammates. We played football all those years together with the (South Delta) Rams and Sun Devils, then in Calgary. Even in lacrosse with the same Islanders teams.”

The pair are part of an SDSS talent pipeline to the Dinos program that began with Jack McDonald and Blake Gau after the 2014 title run. It hasn’t stopped since with Ben McDonald, Evan Paterson, Ethan Troniak and Evan Davies being the latest recruits taking their careers over the Rockies.

“Coach (Ray) Moon has a phenomenal program out there,” said Calgary Dinos defensive coordinator Matt Berry. “They don’t have a ton of kids or the biggest kids but they adapt to the skills and talent they have. Whether that’s going with a no huddle offence or running the ball with the

biggest kid they have. They do whatever it takes to win games.”

Berry watched Moore become a “tackle machine” in his final game as a Sun Devil, a heartbreaking provincial semifinal loss to Terry Fox in 2015.

It was a heroic effort given he had missed much of his Grade 12 season with a shoulder injury.

It somewhat limited his university options but the Dinos saw plenty and Moore heard good things about the program from his former teammates.

“He definitely had the ability to move, be physical and play the game,” continued Berry.

“Since then Charlie has taken the time to work on his game, grow his body and mature as a young man. He has been dedicated to the Dinos program and very dedicated to the whole journey of trying to get drafted. He took his training seriously and he met with me before every team interview to go over everything they might ask. “(The Stampeders) think he fits with what they do. He can be a good special teams player and develop as a linebacker.

Charlie has the flat out ability to just run and that definitely sparked teams’ interest.”

Grant McDonald arrived at Calgary as a transfer from Maine University where he was playing tight end. He thrived as a running back in high school, leading the Sun Devils in rushing for three straight seasons. However, the Dinos thought his athleticism and size (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) were better suited for the other side of the ball.

“I think deep down he realized he was a defensive player,” said Berry. “He is a strong,

aggressive and a disruptive player. Grant has also shown a lot of development as a player.

He played some defensive end in certain packages for us by taking the time to work extra with our defensive line coaches. He took it seriously that he wanted to build some multiplicity to his game.

“He plays with a level of intensity and seriousness that the guys saw. He set the tone

at times by making a big hit or making a big play. It got the guys rolling in the right direction.”

The COVID pandemic wiped out the 2020 U Sport season. Moore returned home in early January where he did classes online as he closes in on his geography degree.

He also worked out with the Coquitlam-based Air Raid Academy. At least, he won’t

GRAHAM (Wilson), Dorothy Jean 1933 - April 27, 2021 Dorothy is fondly remembered by her sister Carol (Bob), and their family, her children, Mark, Alison, Yorke (Karen), her grandchildren Brittany (Derek), Graham (Cara), Cole, Ben and great-grandchildren Henry and Lincoln. She was predeceased by her loving husband Doug, in 2014.

Dorothy moved to Vancouver from Whitehorse, Yukon in 1952 but continued to cherish fond memories, friends and stories from the North. She worked alongside Doug for many years in their Richmond law firm while raising a family.

In retirement, it brought her great joy to volunteer with Friends Of The Library, Delta Nature Society and spend countless hours pursuing genealogy and gardening.

Her family wishes to thank the staff of Kin Village Care Home for their kind and dedicated care.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

GRENFAL, Shelby Leigh September 26, 1998 - April 10, 2021 Shelby Leigh Grenfal, 22, died tragically in a motor vehicle accident on April 10, 2021.

Predeceased by her sister Savannah. Survived by her Mother, Krista Taylor (Mark); her Father, Noll Grenfal (Darla); Grandparents; Russ and Victoria Peterson; Jocelan Kanellys; Shelby’s most beloved fiancé Kyle McCarthy; and many extended family members.

Shelby spent her early years in the Tsawwassen and Ladner areas, and attended Sacred Heart School during her elementary years, and later schooling in Victoria.

We all loved Shelby so much.

Shelby had a heart of gold and was the kindest person, she will be sadly missed.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, surrounded at home by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.

Art is predeceased by his father, Donald Swenson, and is survived by his mother, Patricia Swenson, loving wife, Cindy, and children Luke (Martin), Emily, Daniel (Stuart), James (Kathleen), and expected twin grandsons, due this summer. He is also survived by siblings, Gordon, Burnice, Cynthia, Katherine, and Robert and their families, as well as mother-in-law, Norma Monteith, and many other family and friends.

Art was born in Vancouver and grew up on Sien Farm on Brunswick Point in Ladner, BC. As a fourth-generation member of Ladner’s Swenson family, he learned the value of a strong work ethic, honesty, and the importance of family. Art graduated from BCIT as a surveyor in 1975 and started work with BC Hydro, where he surveyed across British Columbia. He furthered his studies by completing the Urban Land Economics course at UBC and then moved to the gas division of Hydro (BC Gas), where he became a property representative until he retired in 2011, and opened his own consulting business, Swenson Property Services.

Art married Cindy in 1984 and had four children between 1986 and 1992, whom they raised in Ladner. He was a devoted husband of 37 years and a generous, present, and supportive father. He loved spending time with his children, especially during the summer months where they enjoyed camping across the province and making memories at the family cabin on Pender Island.

After retiring in 2011, Art and Cindy enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. He had a passion for exploring new places with family and friends.

Art was an incredibly valued member of the Ladner community. He was involved as a leader with Scouts Canada for many years, as well as a soccer and softball coach for his four children. He was also greatly interested in family history and the history of Ladner, and was always happy to pass his extensive knowledge onto others.

A special thank you to Art’s family doctor, Dr. Hsia, and all of the amazing doctors and nurses at VGH and the BC Cancer Agency, specifically, Dr. Mackenzie and Dr. Nappi, as well as the supportive team with Fraser Health’s Palliative Care Program.

Art’s kind nature touched many lives and he was loved by all who knew him.

He will be forever missed, and his memory will live on in his children and future grandchildren.

As our North Star, he will always be there to guide us.

There will be a celebration of life at a future time.

PUTNAM, Robert Logan December 2, 1944 - May 5, 2021 Bob, an adored husband, loved brother, fun uncle, basketball and tennis coach, teacher, magician, and friend to everyone! With his constant smile, a twinkle in his eye and a funny quip, he loved living.

He excelled at what was important: making people feel comfortable, making them laugh, making them his lifetime friends.

A gifted athlete, but humbled early.

Bob was pulled from his English class in grade 9 to run a relay at Empire Stadium. He came last, he ran against Harry Jerome! He recovered to play on Magee’s high school championship team in 1961 and 1962. He went to Western Washington to play basketball, lettered in soccer, and became a lifeguard. He hitchhiked through Europe, where he ran with the bulls in Pamplona. He also bought his future wife (me) a diamond in Amsterdam after reading all my letters from American Express. He came home to teach and coach at Hugh Boyd in Richmond, where his dream team, the 1977 Trojans, went on to win the B.C. championship and travel to Japan. Bob moved to Delta Secondary School where he taught the rest of his career before retiring after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. However, during those years, he took up tennis and became ranked in senior tennis in both singles and doubles, playing tournaments all over B.C., Washington and Oregon, and then on to Europe. Bob was honoured to have a Junior tournament named after him, which was a huge success for 12 years. When Parkinson’s slowed him down, he played golf, with an apparently effortless swing and he went to the Masters in Atlanta with his adored American cousins!!!

As well, Bob fell in love with Pickleball before everyone else. He did his best to live every day to it’s fullest and he never complained about his failing health.

In fact, he used his wonderful sense of humour to make everyone else feel comfortable.

After making the courageous choice of MAiD and leaving this life on his own terms, he spent his last 10 days of his life surrounded by his family and friends. It was truly a celebration of his life and he was able to enjoy all the visits, the emails, the FaceTimes always with laughter, joy and of course a few tears. How truly wonderful for him to hear how he had made people laugh and how much he was loved. My husband was a true gentleman, and the void he leaves is huge. We were blessed with a 51 year marriage and all those memories will help me and everyone else in the coming years.

He was just the best guy and a wonderful friend to everyone...rest in peace my love.

Bob is survived by his wife Bobbie (nee Stoker), his sister Joni (Colin) Greer, nephew Rob (Lucy), niece Kathryn Greer, and their families.

A memorial gathering in Bob’s honour will be held in the future when it is safe to be together.

ELLIOTT, Charles (Charlie) BOWLING, Dorothy Jean (neé Stevens) July 12, 1926 - April 30, 2021 It is with great sadness that our family announces the loss of our cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Born in Toronto, Jean met and married a young sailor on leave, Harold (Heck) Bowling, and moved to Ladner at the end of World War II to begin their lives together. Known for her love of birds and flowers, and for her kind heart, sense of humour, and favourite expressions (such as “self-approval is no recommendation”), Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who possessed a remarkable capacity for always seeing the good in others. She will be missed beyond anything that words can convey, but her example of love and laughter will endure in the hearts of all those she came into contact with.

Predeceased by her parents Arthur and Margaret, her husband, Heck, and her thirteen brothers and sisters, and lovingly remembered by her daughter Nola, her sons Rick (Pat), Bruce (Flo), and Tim (Theresa), and by her seven grandchildren (Cheryl, Darren [Lenee], Dale [Pam], Jordin [Shannon], Dashiell, Sadie, and Levi) and seven greatgrandchildren (Lauren, Jenna, Brooklyn, Chloe, Logan, Jaden, and Cruz).

The family would like to thank Heather Anderson and the staff at Mountain View Manor for the care Jean received over the past two years.

Charlie passed over peacefully on April 27, 2021 at the age of 90. He was still of sound mind but as he said, things were wearing down inside. He is survived by Mildred, his wife of 67 years, his daughter Sheran, son David and cousin Rod Elliott of Tsawwassen.

Charlie spent his early years in Richmond and then his family moved to Ladner where he met his future wife Mildred while they were still in high school. After they were married they moved to Vancouver, where Charlie worked as a Fireman at the UBC Fire Department. Once he retired he moved back to Ladner where Mildred and him spent many happy times travelling with friends and enjoying the sights in their motorhome.

DELTA HOSPITAL AUXILIARY THRIFT SHOP DONATION CENTRE IS CLOSING on SUNDAY 23 May 2021 The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society would like to thank the community for their support due to Covid and more recently the fire at the Thrift Shop. As a result of the fire, we had to relocate our donations area next to Panago Pizza. The lease has just expired on this temporary location and the Thrift Store is now looking for a new donation area. We will make an announcement about a new donation centre as soon as possible.

In the meantime, no BOOKS or TOYS will be accepted after SUNDAY, MAY 16TH and the LAST DAY for all other DONATIONS is SUNDAY 23rd May 2021, until further notice. The SHOP will remain OPEN as usual.

We humbly request our community NOT to dump donations at our store, but to hold onto them until we have a new location. Please remember that it is very costly for the Auxiliary to dispose of donations that are unusable.

No FURNITURE is acceptable anytime. We thank you once again for your support and understanding.
