Delta residents shocked at last Saturday’s brazen daylight shooting outside North Delta’s Scottsdale Centre mall can rest assured their community is still safe.

That’s what Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord and Mayor George Harvie told the Optimist Tuesday following a press conference outside the DPD’s mobile command unit at the Walmart parking lot, where Dubord provided an update on the investigation into the murder of Bikramdeep Randhawa, 29, of Surrey.

Among a spree of recent brazen daylight shootings in busy Metro Vancouver public places, the B.C. Corrections Officer was shot outside the mall just before 5 p.m. Saturday with many people around.

One witness even managed to take video of a suspect, appearing to carry a gun, who jumped into a waiting vehicle, footage that was immediately posted onto social

“Delta is still a very safe community,” said Dubord. “I think we’re certainly not immune to what happens in the Lower Mainland and we’re not immune to any of the gangs involved.

I think we need to be very pro-active as a police department and I

know that our teams are already out there, checking cars and making sure they’re addressing any issues that they’re seeing in the community, so, I’m hopeful that the gangsters that are out there shooting will want to avoid Delta because of the high level of visibility that our police depart-

ment has.”

Harvie agreed, saying, “We have a very wellresourced police department and we have additional resources should Chief Dubord need them to solve this case.”

Saying the public is justifiably shocked at what happened, Dubord, at the briefing, noted

that while his department is not a member of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), the DPD has its own team that is working closely with IHIT and other police agencies.

Harvie reiterated how the DPD has the resources and financial reserves available in certain situ-

ations.

“I’m very proud we’re not handing this over to IHIT. We’re not handing it to outside of Delta.

Right now, Chief Dubord is in charge and stays in charge of his good officers and Delta is responsible for solving this crime. Again, we’re not handing this over to anybody else,” he said.

Noting they are going through many tips and also asking for more witnesses, Dubord said police have set up a new portal section on the DPD website (deltapolice.ca) where the public can directly upload any video footage onto the page.

He also explained some of the other advanced technology being used by investigators.

Dubord, noting there were about 200 people in the vicinity when the shooting occurred, was asked what he has to say to those who were in the mall parking lot during the shooting.

Randhawa’s bulletriddled car came to rest on the sidewalk on 72nd Avenue by the Shell gas station on the corner of Scott Road.

Police confirmed that the suspect vehicle involved was discovered on fire in the 3700 block of Portland Street, just east of Boundary Road in Burnaby about an hour following the shooting.

Asking the public for any dash cam or other video footage, Dubord said the suspect vehicle drove southbound on Scott Road, turning west onto Highway 10 and then northbound on Highway 91.

resident Kristin Roberts, who last year submitted a petition with more than 900 names in support of Delta starting a pilot project, noted currently only a few residents are able to have their own chickens.

She noted other communities that allow the sustainable and organic practice, among others, include Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria, New Westminster, Toronto, and Seattle.

“We need to be a community that understands and supports the diversity of our neighbour’s choices and needs. While I can appreciate there will always be residents who do not like the idea of backyard chickens, as they believe they belong solely on farms, their objections are focused on potential personal impact, misinformation or bias,” she said.

“The current facts, data and information from other cities and academic literature show no evidence these concerns are remotely problematic on a community scale. Quite the opposite.

The fears around noise, odours and pests are no different than the possibility of a barking dog, improperly stored garbage or messy bird feeders. These stem from individual mismanagement by a citizen, not a community problem. We cannot make decisions by just assuming the worst of our neighbours.”

Community planning director Marcy Sangret said it is new ground for

the city, so staff want to proceed cautiously.

The bylaw amendment removes the current requirement of properties having chickens being located next to an agriculturally-zoned property, while no minimum lot size is proposed.

The city’s agricultural advisory committee examined the proposal, recommending that roosters be prohibited and the number of hens permitted on a property be restricted to four.

Hens will also be required to be licensed with the city and registered with the province through the Premises ID Program to assist with tracking of birds during any future disease outbreaks.

Requiring registration through the Premises ID program would align with recently announced provincial regulations starting in 2022, which will require all livestock and poultry to be registered, a report to council notes.

Coops and runs would be limited to a maximum of 108 square feet of combined indoor and outdoor space.

To reduce the spread of disease and pests, food is to be kept enclosed, and excess removed in a timely manner.

The program is to be reviewed after one year.

Coun. Lois Jackson, a member of the agricultural committee, said she hopes the city will catalogue all calls the bylaw department may be responding to during that time.

DPD first in Canada to sign pledge for more female officers The City of Delta’s police department is the first to make such a pledge in Canada.

The department recently signed the 30 x 30 Pledge, a series of lowcost actions police departments can take to improve the representation of women in law enforcement.

Recruitment classes would be at least 30 per cent women by 2030.

The 30 × 30 Initiative started in the U.S. as a coalition of police leaders, researchers and professional organizations who joined together to advance the representation and experiences of women in policing.

“I’m really proud to be part of an organization that is working towards this goal, and to be the first Canadian police agency to pledge that 30 per cent of its officers will be women by 2030,” said Deputy Chief Michelle Davey, head of administration at Delta Police.

“To meet this goal we will build the foundation for 2030, by examining what our Delta citizens are looking for in their police officers by way of qualities and characteristics police officers need today, but also in the future, as demands for our service changes.”

Davey notes policing in Canada has been gradually changing the past decades from a traditional warrior concept of policing to more of a guardian role, emphasizing social service and valuing community partnerships.

Currently, 21 per cent of Delta’s police officers are women.

The DPD has already made good headway on its new pledge, as three of the four new recruits starting training this month are women.

Chief Neil Dubord outlined the plan at the Delta Police Board last month, noting the initiative will focus on recruitment strategies.

Delta looking at revitalizing Ladner Village SANDOR GYARMATI

Will the City of Delta finally approve an Official Community Plan (OCP) for Ladner Village that had been envisioned a decade ago?

The planning department is about to embark on another OCP review for the area, as well as the Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Strategy.

Both projects are the result of recommendations by the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee in its final 2020 report to council.

“This project considers updates to the OCP in service of revitalization objectives. Areas to be explored include land use, heights, and density within the Village as well as renewed design form and character guidelines for future development,” according to the planning department.

Meanwhile, a consultant was also retained to help shape the redevelopment of the Ladner waterfront, seen as a key element of village revitalization.

Opportunities for the waterfront include a reconfiguration and redesign of Chisholm Street as well as a site redevelopment strategy and concept for the Delta-owned former Seven Seas site and Spot on the Water Park, the department notes.

When it comes to the OCP, back in 2012 council gave preliminary approval to a new plan, but backed off from passing elements of that plan following vocal opponents at a public hearing speaking against proposed heights and densities.

That year, former community planning director Thomas Leathem said, “The goal is to initiate the rede-

velopment of the downtown Ladner waterfront area to achieve a vibrant, people-oriented environment, with strong linkages to the waterfront, reflecting and celebrating the historical roots of the community.”

Delta had initiated the revitalization process in 2009 with the establishment of the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee.

That committee met with property owners and the public to discuss the future of the area, similar to what the latest committee had undertaken.

A consultant’s report in 2011 recommended encouraging unique destination restaurants and retailers as well as more businesses from the food and beverage industry.

The proposed OCP amendments included adding a wider range of uses, such as rec-

lage can’t just stay the way it is,” said McDonald in an interview following the release of his committee’s final report.

Committee vice-chair and fellow council member Dylan Kruger agreed, insisting their 2020 final report is not going to be just another document that collects dust on a shelf.

“To summarize the whole thing, it’s respecting Ladner Village’s heritage and preserving it while also excitedly looking forward to the future,” he said.

Their committee came up with 35 recommendations, 15 of which have been identified as high priority actions to encourage a varied range of housing through smart densification, activate the waterfront for commercial development and public access, and support business sustainability through increased vibrancy.

Leathem at the time said the proposal to allow up to four storeys was based mostly on economics, but that proposed height was also consistent with what is seen around Ladner and in Tsawwassen.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says it’s working with Delta farmers to address concerns about the proposed Westham Island Canoe Pass Tidal Marsh Project.

It is part of the port authority’s Habitat Enhancement Program, which is a form of socalled “habitat banking” involving the creation or improvement of habitats.

They would be used as future compensation in advance projects that could impact fish habitat, such as of the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project.

The Westham Island project, originally proposed in 2014, involves the creation of approximately four hectares of new intertidal marsh habitat on the south shore of the Ladner farming island.

According to the port authority, the project

would be located in Canoe Pass, near the south side of Westham Island, and would expand an existing marsh area by converting an adjacent non-vegetated, low-value intertidal sandflat and mudflat into approximately four hectares of high-quality marsh habitat.

According to the port authority, the Westham Island site was selected based on its potential to benefit a broad range of fish and wildlife species, and to increase the overall ecological function of the area.

However, local farmers expressed concerns including potential negative effects on irrigation water quality by increasing salinity, risks of damage to the Westham Island Bridge and that the project may impede potential plans by the City of Delta to establish a piped irrigation water supply to the island.

During a presenta-

tion at Delta council last month on the proposed Terminal 2 expansion at Roberts Bank, representatives from the port authority were asked how the port would address concerns by the Delta Farmers’ Institute.

Mayor George Harvie remarked that farmers think it’s a good project, but are worried about the location, due to potential interference with flood boxes and future work planned to bring fresh irrigation water.

Duncan Wilson, the port’s vice-president of Environment, Community and Government Affairs, confirmed they will be having further discussions with the farming community about possible re-location.

can’t even imagine what it was like to be at the Scottsdale Centre mall in North Delta last Saturday.

A sunny afternoon, with the mall and parking lot full of families getting groceries or enjoying a bite to eat on a patio turned into a nightmare in mere seconds when shots rang out.

Patrons were locked inside stores while a yet to be identified gunman, targeted a Surrey man, 29-year-old provincial corrections officer Bikramdeep Randhawa.

I live in a condo complex just two blocks from Scottsdale Centre. I frequent that area often.

What if I had been there when the shots rang out? What if I had my young niece and nephew with me or any other of my family members?

It’s something that I don’t want to think about, but it is a sad reality that is now forever etched in my mind. This really hits too close to home.

Since Friday there have been five shootings in the Lower Mainland, three of them fatal. And with three more fatal shootings last month, that now makes eight in the past four weeks.

Most of the shootings have been directly connected to the gang conflict, while others appear to be random attacks.

By the good grace of God no bystanders have been caught in the cross-fire – at least not yet.

These incidents are spiraling out of control. Law enforcement seems powerless to stop this, despite all their best efforts and resources. It begs the question, is the provincial and federal governments providing police the resources they need to put an end to this violence?

Tuesday morning, DPD Chief Neil Dubord and Mayor George Harvie held a media briefing, where among other things, updated the public on the investigation and to reassure residents that Delta is a safe community.

After Saturday night I really have to wonder is this is true.

Mother’s Day is about love, not accomplishments or titles

M

y mother sewed my first wedding dress. Made of white satin with a lace bodice and endless tiny pearl buttons down the back, it was stunning.

During one of my COVID organization days, I discovered it wrapped in blue tissue paper. It looked good after 35 years.

“I can’t believe I made that,” my mother said as she delicately examined the Swiss lace appliqués she hand stitched. “We must make sure to show it to people so they know that I was once productive and could do things.”

Her comment surprised me, but it’s also a gentle reminder that we should let mums know that nothing is more important and worthwhile than their guidance and nurturing. Nothing trumps that skill, not even sewing.

Women don’t always get recognition for being, ‘just’, mothers. Nowadays there’s a lot of pressure for women to be successful outside of the home. My mother has a lifetime of professional accom-

plishments, but her legacy is her unconditional love and support, which I in turn have passed on to my own children.

So what’s in a name this Mother’s Day? I ask because Australia’s National University’s gendre handbook is recommending using, ‘gestational parent’, instead of Mother, and ‘non birthing parent,’ instead of Father. In my opinion this is an example of woke culture gone too far.

The recommendation has evidently seeped into advertising. I got an email last week from a local dish ware company telling me they would

understand if I opted out of emails that mention Mothers or Father’s Day, because, “They understood that I may be offended by those terms.”

Huh, no I am not offended.

Parent, guardian, or caregiver what does it matter, spending time on being offended by labels is misguided. Mothering is a privilege and responsibility that not everyone is afforded. I hope to have grandchildren one day, and will be very comfortable answering to Grandmother.

To the mothers fortunate to have children, to the mothers who have lost children, to the sons and daughters lucky to have great mothers, and to all the men who also mother, (just with pants on), I wish you a happy Mother’s Day. I celebrate you all, and appreciate the many things you do. You don’t have to define yourself by title, nor prove your worth, we love you just as you are.

Bravery in the midst of tragedy Editor: As I’m sure was the case with many others who read the article (Optimist, April 29) of the shocking and tragic passing of Melissa Hance’s 46-year-old husband, Reid, due to COVID-19, I was deeply impacted by this story.

My heart and deepest sympathies go out to the Hance family and all those who loved Reid.

I feel compelled to express my gratitude to Melissa for the bravery and grace she has shown by sharing her story locally and with the

world, in order to help raise greater awareness of the danger this virus presents. In particular, to those who may feel they are exempt from serious harm from COVID due to age, health or fitness level.

With so much conflicting information in the news and social media regarding COVID-19, as well as fears/questions about vaccinations, lock-downs and compliance fatigue, it is safe to say we have all reached our limit. Reid’s tragic passing is a sobering reminder that no one is

“exempt” from COVID and we all need to continue to do our best in keeping ourselves and each other safe, regardless of our demographic.

Thank you Melissa for your heroic efforts in helping to protect other families, friends and neighbours by sharing your family’s tragedy publicly, amidst your own loss and pain.

I hope everyone who is able contributes to your go-fund-me page to help ease some of the burden for you and your children.

Don’t mistake growth for progress Editor: Re: Progress train will never stop, (Optimist, letters, April 15) I found the letter from Mr. McDonald quite interesting, especially the comment that we be thoughtful and friendly about ‘progress.’

This requires us to define progress, especially relative to the issue of ‘growth.’

If you look it up on line, you’ll find that “Progress is the movement towards a refined, improved, or otherwise desired state.” Consider this in terms of ‘growth’; unless growth leads us to a refined or improved state it cannot be mistaken for ‘progress.’

Our understanding of the terminology here is very important. I think

it’s where we start to find the differences in our community. If the intent is clarified it is likely that everyone would say they want progress, not growth.

We appear to have lost the ability to discuss issues such as these. Our actions around community development are narrowly channeled in a binary fashion. You either support growth or not. The issue of how that growth fits into ‘progress’ is where we lose focus.

Because growth is important to our business community the press and government often discuss growth in terms of ‘progress.’ In this sense it stresses economic factors over community or the environment. With our changing

climate and community needs, we seriously need to reconsider this.

In New Zealand “A climate change ‘lens’ will now be applied to all major decisions made by the government.”

Understandably this does not deny growth. It admits that all proposals, development or otherwise, will be judged from a wider perspective.

We need to do the same. No longer can we afford ‘growth’ without looking at the effects on climate and community. We can only do this by planning growth to retain/improve our environment and quality of life. We need to recognize this as our responsibility to our community and future generations.

Time to boycott gas price scammers Editor: Tsawwassen has the highest price in the area and I can’t understand why gas guzzlers don’t simply drive to Ladner for a four to 10 cent savings per litre.

Last Friday there was a 13 cent premium in Tsawwassen at Shell, Chevron and PretroCan. You can’t tell me that that difference is caused by the extra cost

of transporting the fuel an extra 10 km.

The City of Delta has come through for the lacrosse community.

The city has picked-up the tab and replaced the goal netting that were stolen from the Ladner Outdoor Lacrosse Box last week. News of the vandalism led to the Delta Islanders program receiving numerous offers to cover the costs, including a plumbing company in Nanaimo.

“We would like thank everyone for their generous offers to replace the damaged lacrosse nets. The City of Delta is taking care this for us and we thank them very much. The support and kindness has been overwhelming,” said Delta Lacrosse director of operations Amanda Douglas.

Every year, Metro Vancouver adopts outdoor water use regulations to conserve drinking water during the summer months.

Delta police recover $400,000 in stolen goods IAN JACQUES

Cooperation between several police agencies has led to the recovery of more than $400,000 of stolen goods.

Delta Police pieced together a recent theft of two trucks from one area of Delta, with the theft of two trailers from another area, then worked with other Metro Vancouver police agencies to successfully recover nearly all the stolen merchandise.

DPD were called April 19 about the theft of two tractor trailer trucks from a business located in Tilbury. Together the trucks were valued at $75,000.

Later the same day, a report about two stolen tractor trailer units came into police. The trailers were taken from Annacis Island. Both trailers were full of appliances – which are in high demand these days, as the pandemic

In total about $280,000 (retail value) of appliances was stolen, in addition to the $85,000 value of the two trailers.

“The constable work-

ing on the theft of the trucks then began working on this new complaint, to determine if the files might be linked,” said Insp. Ciaran Feenan, head of frontline patrol.

“She kept digging, fol-

lowing a trail of evidence, and then determined the trucks may have been driven to Langley.”

With the assistance of Langley RCMP, both trucks and one trailer were located in Langley on April 20. The recovered trailer was still full of the appliances.

“Our officer was pleased with this recovery, but kept working,” added Feenan. “The evidence led her to Abbotsford – where she and the Abbotsford Police gathered enough information to write a warrant for a property where it seemed an attempt had been made to hide a suspicious amount of large boxes.”

Delta and Abbotsford Police attended that property April 23, and were able to recover all the stolen appliances, in their original boxes – save one lone microwave.

“Thefts such as these don’t just impact large companies – they

impact consumers and homeowners who are waiting on the delivery of these type of goods,” said Feenan. “I’m very pleased our officers,

working with their counterparts in Langley and Abbotsford, were able to recover nearly all the goods, more than 150 appliances in total.”

It will be a little easier to find an accessible van parking spot within the City of Delta.

Council last month approved a bylaw amendment to increase the accessibility of parking by adding requirements for van accessible parking where accessible parking is required, as well, add a requirement for residential visitor parking to include accessible parking.

Of the required accessible parking spaces for a new development, 50 percent will be required as van accessible parking at a width of 11 feet.

Accessible and van accessible parking spaces would need to be labelled as such with painting on the pavement, as well as signage.

During council’s discussion, Mayor George Harvie said, when it comes to enforcement, it is infuriating to see people who are able-bodied but using mobility passes for their vehicles.

“It bothers me when I see people bounce out of their car and they’ve taken a handicap spot.

To me, it’s just total, total ignorance,” he said.

The City of Delta wants to improve its tree cover.

Planning staff are continuing work on revising the current tree bylaw and the urban forestation project.

The goal of the strategy is to significantly increase tree planting in the city.

The Climate Action and Community Livability Advisory Committee recently discussed the strategy and was told a survey of the urban canopy coverage

by Dr. David Nowak of the U.S. Forest Service will be completed this month.

The committee was told staff are working toward a goal of 40 per cent tree canopy cover in all three communities in Delta.

As far as the upcoming new tree bylaw, it proposes increased protection for larger trees and significant trees, increased penalties to discourage illegal tree cutting, increased requirements for tree replacement and special requirements for pruning large trees and significant trees.

Delta’s current bylaw requires a minimum twofor-one replacement of trees that are removed under a tree cutting permit. When more than one tree will be removed within 24 months, a tree replacement plan must be submitted by a qualified person.

The new bylaw is to come back to council for consideration sometime later this year.

“We have our own building where we have been doing weddings for all the cruise ship companies for over 20 years,” explained Scurr, a long-time former Delta Chamber executive and a recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal for his community work. “Normally we are doing about 6,000 weddings a year, but we have been furloughed for almost 18 months (because of COVID-19) with no cruises. I said to my wife why don’t we give back to the community we love with a healthy and enjoyable thing to do?”

Scurr was introduced to e-biking while vacationing in Mexico. It was two years ago he partnered up with Perkins, a North Vancouver resident, who had already launched an e-bike web-

site that provides owners with videos and tips on a variety of subjects. The Tilbury store and website ebikecanada.com is part of C&C Electric Bike International’s commercial component.

Scurr adds the pandemic has only enhanced the popularity of e-bikes.

“Since COVID 19 people have wanted to get out and about and it’s a way to do it healthily,” he continued. “It’s great for people who want be able cycle further and not have stress and strain on their bodies, especially if you are a little older or want to go longer distances.

“The assistance the electric motor gives you is wonderful and it opens up a whole new world for people. That they didn’t know what they can have.”

The store is affiliated with HUB Cycling, a non-profit organization that has created a network for riders in Metro Vancouver.

Scurr added the store will also be an education centre for everything from riders’ safety to providing routes around Delta and beyond.

“E-bikes can be quite fast and if people don’t ride them well they can be a danger on trails,” he said. “With HUB we will have safety and courtesy training courses. It will be online for now and eventually in a training room at the store.”

Scurr encourages anyone to come out to the store for a demo, starting May 15. Registration can be done on the website.

Delta aims to have better sidewalk network SANDOR GYARMATI

Work on a sidewalk replacement project in Tsawwassen will soon be underway.

Delta council last week approved a sidewalk replacement project on 12th Avenue that had been put off last year.

Due to tree roots heaving the sidewalk and creating trip hazards for pedestrians, the removal and replacement of a portion of concrete sidewalk along the boulevard area of 5550 12

Avenue was to be completed as part of the 2020 Neighbourhood Road Improvement Program.

As the works are within both the municipal road dedication and private property, the project costs were to be shared with the property owner, AL. Scott (Bayside) Inc. However, council last year was told Bayside could not support the cost-sharing project at the time as its commercial tenants were experiencing the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report to council notes discussions with Bayside earlier this year indicated it was preferable to defer the sidewalk replacement until 2022.

However, Bayside recently came forward with a request to expedite the project.

The project will include removing the street trees and planting suitable replacements using an appropriate root barrier that has been used successfully in various locations within Ladner Village.

As well, the affected

concrete sidewalk and plaza area will be replaced with coloured concrete in an effort to match the existing unaffected area.

“The completion of this project will provide an overall improved streetscape that will provide long-term benefits for the overall community. These include new sidewalks, new street trees with appropriate root barriers, LED street lights, irrigation system, and power receptacles for festive lighting,” the report notes.

The capital work is projected to cost approximately $325,000 with Bayside picking up $60,000 of that amount.

During council’s discussion on how the trees’ root systems damaged the sidewalk, city manager Sean McGill noted it’s a problem elsewhere in the city.

Trees that were part of more recent developments have been damaging sidewalks and driveways within a few years of being planted, which has prompted the city to look at how it can ensure

appropriate trees are planted in appropriate areas, he said.

Council also approved a major sidewalk network project for North Delta.

Improvements will include 1.5 metre-wide concrete sidewalks and new LED street lighting.

The new sidewalks, 11 in total will be installed adjacent to the existing curbs and will tie into the existing sidewalks.

The projects have a total cost of $1.45 million.

Construction of the project is scheduled for summer and fall 2021.

and one new traffic signal installation.

Crosswalk improvements will be undertaken at the following locations: 80 Avenue at 115 Street Arthur Drive north of 47 Avenue Arthur Drive at 45

Avenue 116 Street and 91 Avenue 112 Street at 7 400 Block Central Avenue at Lions Park 47A Avenue at 48B Street

The new control light to be added at Central Avenue at Lions Park is a project that resulted from a community petition last fall by six-year-old Ladner resident Arianne Dielman.

It will be a special trip to her aunt’s hair salon later this month for Grace Zulke.

On May 29, the sevenyear-old Grade 2 French Immersion student at Ladner Elementary will have her hair cut for the first time in two years at Refined Salon and Spa in Tsawwassen.

She will be donating it to Wigs for Kids BC (W4K BC) and has also launched a fundraising campaign through the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation too.

The volunteer-run W4K BC organization provides funding to cover the cost of custom-made human-hair wigs for children and teens at BC Children’s Hospital who have suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment or other serious illnesses.

Grace’s initial goal was to raise $1,000 or $100 for every inch that will be

“I’m very much looking forward to it as we tangled out her hair last night,” laughed her mom Vanessa when the Optimist interviewed her on April 29.

It was back in Kindergarten when Grace last got her hair cut. She let it grow it for a year then didn’t have much of a choice when the COVID19 pandemic closed salons for an extended period last spring. Nearly a year later, she learned of Wigs for Kids.

“It’s something she talked about for a while and she made the decision early last month,” added Vanessa. “This is (the charity) she wanted to do it for. She is excited that her aunt gets to do it and she’s been asking me every day what her fundraising total is.”

505-Junk Raises $4,000 for DSS dry grad Deltans came together in early April to regain their space while donating to the Delta Secondary dry grad class of 2021.

With the cancellation of the annual spring clean-up event this year, 505-Junk wanted to provide an easy option for people to drop off their small to medium sized items.

In total, 505-Junk had a stretch goal to fundraise $4,000 for the dry grads.

The final tally was $4,001.80 with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the fundraising committee.

505-Junk hauled six full trucks and more than 17,000 pounds of material while focusing on environmentally-friendly recycling and disposal with their local suppliers.

“It was a pretty incredible turnout,” said Barry

Hartman, co-founder and CEO of 505-Junk “We want to thank everyone who dropped items off and donated, the volunteers for safely coordinating people on site, and our team members at 505-Junk for helping load the trucks and drop them off at the appropriate recycling depots. We hope you enjoy your newfound space.”

Christine Murphy, who was in charge of the event for the DSS fundraising committee, also offered her thanks to 505Junk and the community at-large.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you to Barry, Alex and Neal from 505-Junk. Such friendly, professional and generous young guys from an amazing local company who donated their time and their trucks – six of them,” she said.

Ladner photographer helps Canada reach podium on world stage MARK BOOTH

It was a life-changing moment for Stefan Malloch and it put Canada on the podium for the first time in what is considered the Olympics of photography.

The Ladner photographer’s submission helped Canada finish in a tie for third at the recent World Photographic Cup. Celebrating the best of the best in professional photography worldwide, the eighth edition of the competition took place in Rome, Italy. Australia took top honours, followed

by Brazil, while Canada shared bronze medal honours with Spain.

Each country submitted 18 images, three each in six categories which included: reportage/ photojournalism, commercial, illustration/digi-

tal art, nature, portrait and wedding. Malloch’s photo was entered in the reportage/photojournalism and it was of his daughter Zoe being born, via a cesarean section, back in 2017.

“It was our first born that would literally change everything for me. It’s the most passionate picture I will ever take by far,” said Malloch. “We didn’t even know if it was going to be a boy or a girl and my wife was then rushed away into surgery.”

Upon joining the Professional Photographers of Canada, a couple of friends encouraged Malloch to enter the photo. Given the number of entries, he wasn’t getting his hopes up.

“Thousands and thousands are submitted then they whittle it down,” he explained. “I

was excited just to make it to the semi-finals and absolutely blown away when I found out it was selected.”

A realtor and a mental health supporter, Malloch recently took his interest in photography to another level. He eventually created his own photography YouTube channel that has nearly 27,000 subscribers and has resulted in several companies wanting him to feature their products.

He was also a finalist for Canadian Photographic 2021 artist of the year.

GardenBuddieskeepingseniorsconnected Earthwise Society program adapts to a stay connected virtual format amid the COVID-19 pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic has been an especially difficult time for seniors.

Many are isolated at home, unable to visit with family and friends and participate in activities they once enjoyed.

While the latest technology has changed the way we live and allowed us to easily connect from afar, many older adults are unfamiliar with the latest applications and may feel left behind. As the pandemic highlights the need to shift the delivery of social and education programs in a way that remains safe, Earthwise Society has adapted its popular Garden Buddies program to help seniors stay active and engaged in the community, while at the same time introducing them to the ins and outs of new technology.

Earthwise Garden Buddies is an established gardening together program that was designed to increase physical activity and social connections for seniors by involving them in shared gardening and nature based activities at home and at the Earthwise Garden.

In response to the COVID19 pandemic, Earthwise has adapted the program to a vir-

The Garden Buddies Stay Connected program will pair

The mentors will support the seniors, teach them how to access technology, and introduce them to virtual group

meetings where they can interact with other program participants and mentors.

Seniors will take part in online workshops where they will be able to share their love of gardening with others and

connect with people of all ages. The workshops will offer do-it-yourself gardening and nature sessions twice a month and will include a monthly garden project kit, delivered directly to seniors that they can build in real time as they attend the workshop.

Studies have shown that increasing access to technology can not only help seniors learn new things, keep them up to date on current events, and increase social networks, but it can also help them maintain cognitive and mental health, improve self-esteem, and decrease feelings of isolation, which is critical in today’s reality.

Earthwise is currently recruiting mentors of all ages, so if you would like to get involved with the Garden Buddies Stay Connected program, please reach out.

A six-week mentor training program will be offered in May and June, and will provide professional insights on supporting seniors and helping them access technology.

I recall a terrible old expression: “He’s got a mug that only a mother could love!”

As with most comical quips, it is the juxtaposition of a crazy statement against a solid truth. It isn’t healthy to look on people as being ugly, but it is true that mothers have a supernatural ability to see past our messes.

When you walk through their freshly cleaned house with mud dripping off of you they love you. When you get caught up in drugs and bring pain to your life - they love you. They may get mad, but you know that they always love you!

Mother’s Day is a chance for us to thank our mom’s and honour them for the behindthe-scenes heroes that they are. In fact, we should go out at 7 p.m.

Major institutions are betting on bitcoin.

Here’s why you should too...

Cryptocurrency isn’t just the domain of technology whizzes anymore.

With so much money being printed as a result of COVID-19 financial relief, corporations and institutions are worried about inflation.

Searching for safe stores of value to hedge against inflation, they’ve landed on bitcoin.

INSTITUTIONAL MOVEMENT TOWARDS BITCOIN Bitcoin is digital money that doesn’t exist in any physical form (as in bills or coins) and is not owned by banks or governments. Because there are a finite number of bitcoin that will ever exist (21 million to be precise), it will in theory retain its value in the long-run.

Institutions are now feeling more confident about bitcoin and are pouring money into it.

Despite initial skepticism around the legitimacy of bitcoin, it is the best performing asset of the decade. Its value has grown 200% per year over the last 10 years.

is now worth $5.3 billion, with MicroStrategy essentially capturing a $3-billion increase in value through their bitcoin investment.

Since then, we’ve seen a flurry of macro traders, corporations and institutions begin to invest in bitcoin.

Among the established names bringing bitcoin into the mainstream are Paypal, which launched the capability of buying and selling bitcoin on its platform. NBA team the Sacramento Kings have offered bitcoin salary options to all its players. And notably, Tesla made headlines when they purchased $1.5-billion worth of bitcoin and announced they would now accept bitcoin as a form of payment.

Citibank has speculated that bitcoin could become the currency of choice for global trade, and Deutsche Bank says that bitcoin’s market cap of $1 trillion makes it too important to ignore.

INSTITUTIONS AND COPORATIONS ARE HOLDING, NOT SELLING BITCOIN

BRINGING BITCOIN INTO THE MAINSTREAM

Institutions aren’t just looking to bitcoin as a short-term strategy.

Michael Saylor, the founder and CEO of MicroStrategy, a leading business intelligence firm, has said multiple times that he believes bitcoin is the simplest way to protect the value that MicroStrategy has created for shareholders.

Some businesses, such as MicroStrategy, have said that they don’t intend to ever sell bitcoin. They see it as the world’s reserve asset and are playing an accumulation game.

Saylor and MicroStrategy announced that as of April 2021, they had accumulated a total of 91,579 bitcoin, which they spent $2.226-billion to acquire. That bitcoin

A Ladner golf course owner and his family are staunch supporters of a website to help men dealing with depression and even contemplating suicide.

It was just over five years ago when Brad Newell learned about Heads Up Guys, an online tool created by Dr. John Ogrodniczuk, a UBC professor.

“They were struggling at the time and needed funds. I really liked John and what he was doing,” recalled Newell of the non-profit resource.

It didn’t take long for the owner of King’s Links Golf Course by the Sea and King of Floors to jump onboard as a major financial contributor to Ogrodniczuk’s site.

“What’s the best thing about Heads Up Guys?” continued Newell. “We get 150 guys a day that will punch into Google search I want to kill myself.

Depression affects millions of men every day yet many suffer in silence.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), men account for 75 to 80 per-

cent of suicides with untreated or poorly treated depression being one of the leading risk factors.

More than 75 percent of the estimated 300,000 online users of the site’s self-check depression screening tool has indi-

cated probable depression.

“Everyone is struggling especially now (amid the pandemic).

This site will go on forever and it will save lives,” added Newell.

“As men, we’ve been taught for generations that showing despair, sadness or other emotions are signs of weakness.

We’re told we should just ‘snap out of it.’ If we don’t talk about it and it goes on too long, we withdraw, close down or shut people out.

“If you or someone you know might be suffering from depression, I can tell you that there is help, hope and people available to get you back on track.”

Newell added the site is also valuable for family members and friends looking for answers with a section dedicated to ways to provide support.

“Thirty percent of the traffic are females try find out what is wrong with their guy,” he said.

What if negative emotions aren’t so bad?

Negative emotions?

Unpleasant feelings?

Chances are you have them. And chances are they’ve intensified this past year, as we’ve struggled with the effects of the pandemic.

If you’re like us, chances are you’ve tried to push them down or numb them out. The good news about “bad” emotions is that they really aren’t bad at all.

Unpleasant feelings are part of the vast, human emotional spectrum and having the full range of emotions is a sign of good mental health.

Grief and sadness are healthy responses to loss. When anger is justifiable, it is a healthy response to mistreatment.

This past year we have been dealing with a significant amount of grief and loss, both as a society, and individually.

We might be mourning our pre-pandemic lives.

Or grieving for loved ones.

Perhaps you’ve lost your job or your business. These experiences will create feelings that just aren’t easy.

But feeling all our feelings is simply part of being human, and there may be no such thing as “negative” feelings. In fact, the very feelings we associate with feeling bad are actually good for us.

Here are some myths about negative feelings, and the corresponding facts.

Myth: It’s better to suppress – than express – your negative feelings.

Fact: Suppressing your feelings can backfire.

When it comes to emotional behaviours, research shows that recognizing when you’re upset or feeling down is more effective than pushing down those feelings. For instance, studies have shown that emotional cravings for food and alcohol increase when you try to suppress them.

When it comes to anger, if

it’s bottled up, it can lead to an unhealthy anger response.

If it is turned inward, anger can lead to depression and other health problems.

ANGER Myth: Anger will always lead to violence.

Fact: Anger has a very bad rap. It’s not surprising, really, as it is associated with violence and aggression. But feeling and even expressing anger do not have to lead to aggressive behaviour. It is very important to note, however, that when anger is turned outward as aggression, it is destructive and unacceptable.

Myth: Anger serves no constructive purpose.

Fact: Anger can actually be our friend when we’re not acting it out.

When it is justified and appropriate, anger can be constructive. It can help clarify and solve problems and correct misunderstandings in relationships. When people

can express their anger calmly, they are more able to resolve conflict.

Some researchers suggest that constructive anger can even promote heart health.

When we are threatened or attacked, anger can provide the strength we need to protect ourselves or stand our ground. Social movements fueled by anger can also be effective in overcoming injustice in society.

SADNESS Myth: Sadness serves no purpose.

Fact: In many cultures, sadness is considered an “undesirable” or “problem” emotion that serves no purpose. In fact, sadness serves important functions. Sadness can trigger thinking and behaviour strategies that help us deal with demanding social situations. It is also a healthy way to process an experience of loss.

Myth: if you’re crying, you’re not coping.

Fact: This is just not true.

Crying is an indication of strong feelings, to be sure, but tears are a natural way to work through grief, loss and sadness.

FEAR Myth: Fear causes us to freeze in our tracks, which makes us open to danger.

Fact: In fact, fear makes human beings get out of harm’s way. Instinctively.

We don’t even have to think about it.

That’s because our species evolved fear as a way to respond quickly to dangerous situations – which is known as the “fight or flight” response. It allows us to make our escape, and it was essential to our survival. At the same time, being fearful puts us on high alert, bringing us back to the present moment, which can make us better able to deal with danger.

e are the coming together of our own unique experiences, triggers (both good and bad) and stuck points. In the midst of what seems like an endless pandemic rendering isolation a necessity for the greater good, it has become more important than ever to think about our own internal dialogue.

Are we self deprecating? Are we holding on to limiting beliefs about ourselves, our abilities or our value added to others?

The dissolution of our mental health as a society is the fuel to the pandemics fire. Why? Because as a society we are face to face with a monotonous, relentless spiral of days spent in the presence of our own company.

1st anniversary of Here2Talk sees over 3,200 students supported

Here2Talk, British Columbia’s first dedicated mental health support service for post-secondary students, is marking a successful first year providing guidance and support to 3,285 B.C. students.

“This has been a difficult year for everyone, and post-secondary students have faced unprecedented pandemic-related challenges, along with the annual stress of final exams and anxiety around securing a summer job,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “We want students to know Here2Talk is available for them 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to offer support and guidance.”

Here2Talk launched in April 2020 as a free mental health counselling and referral service providing year-round, 24/7 mental

internal shift. A process, or changing of patterns and habits in our every day that reevaluates the way we limit ourselves. Creating an awareness in our minds of our specific patterns of internal dialogue that devalues our abilities and often leaves us crippled, stuck in our own heads, trapped by the demons of doubt, fear, shame and cruelty.

Shifting this internal dialogue begins with recognizing it’s presence. What do we say to ourselves when something doesn’t happen the way we want it to? Do we compassionately speak to ourselves as a friend? Offering helpful guidelines or suggestions to adjust what didn’t work and try again?

Probably not. Because we as a society are being fed by notion of lacking.

Not enough sleep, not smart enough, not strong enough... The list goes on.

And taking care of ourselves, including and especially holding ourselves accountable to that internal dialogue is a daily habit and a big ask.

Change, in my experience, begins with compassion for the self. We are human, we are imperfect, we are flawed but above all else we have the power to progress when we realize we are enough as we are today, accepting ourselves in order to move forward,

health support services for all B.C. post-secondary students, whether they live in Canada or abroad.

“Post-secondary students need access to quality mental health services now more than ever,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

“Here2Talk is a safety net for many students since it was launched one year ago, and as the program begins its second year, even more post-secondary students will receive the vital support and connection they need during the pandemic, and after.”

Here2Talk has been used more than 10,300 times since the service was launched. The chat feature has proved most popular, with 75 per cent of students using it.

Students’ satisfaction with the service is high, with 82 per cent saying it provided

them with the support and tools they needed.

“The feedback from thousands of students who have already used it has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Brittny Anderson, the Premier’s Special Advisor on Youth and MLA for NelsonCreston. “This program is critical for supporting students who have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic.”

Students can access chat sessions with a trained counsellor online at Here2Talk or by downloading the free Here2Talk app through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. They can speak with a counsellor by phone toll-free at 1 877 8573397 or at 604 642-5212.

Here2Talk services are available in English and French, with some additional languages such as Punjabi and Mandarin.

Check in on your mental health There’s a common misperception that “good mental health” means feeling happy and “bad mental health” means feeling sad. In fact, a mentally healthy life includes the full range of human emotions—even the uncomfortable ones like sadness, fear and anger.

While feeling well means different things to different people, some things might actually apply to all of us: in order to thrive, we all need a good sense of self, and we all need purpose, contribution, hope, resilience and belonging.

We’ve condensed that knowledge into an informal list that you can use to check your own mental health. It’s not a scientific tool, or a way to diagnose yourself. It’s just one way to check in with yourself about your mental health, and maybe guide you on how to support and improve it.

Read each statement and consider whether you “agree” or “disagree” with it.

Ten years ago, I am living in the small town of Port Alberni. I am angry, tired, frustrated, and ashamed of myself. Fastpitch thriving amid the pandemic Even without games being played Delta association sees registration surpass 2019 total MARK BOOTH

The Delta Fastpitch Association has bucked the odds by seeing its registration rise above pre-pandemic levels.

The softball organization, which serves the entire city, features 42 teams this season, which is an increase from the 2019 campaign, the last time games were actually played.

“We embraced all of our younger players in what I like to call a ‘blanket of comfort.’

We ended up writing them Christmas cards, just letting them know they were important to us and we were looking forward to the new season,” explained second-year president Lisa Brown-Rooke “That’s what we were scared of. We were worried about our numbers. If we are not able to have a season (with games), what are we able to provide to the teams? What could we do for the players’ mental wellbeing as it’s important to get them out onto the fields. We were looking for all different avenues.”

Among them was free preseason training camps held over spring break, run by director of coaching Chris Roper and director of player development Chris Ainge, with help from older players. Now all the teams are practicing two or three times a week at the association’s three main venues Hawthorne (Ladner), Brandrith (Tsawwassen) and North Delta Community parks.

“C” level players are back on the diamond for the first time in two years. Initial COVID health restrictions last spring kept all youth sports dark until mid-June and Delta Fastpitch decided it was too late have any

kind of a house season that typically would be over a couple of weeks.

“I can’t say enough about our executive,” continued BrownRooke. “They have gone above and beyond to make this year spectacular for development.

Walking through our parks, it’s just so beautiful to see them full of kids with laughter and learning. It’s definitely much better now for us than it was this time last year.”

That said, Brown-Rooke is hoping Delta teams will see game action by June.

Softball BC recently sent a letter to the Provincial Health Authority asking for the current restrictions to be eased for

a sport that is played outdoors and, for the most part, socially distanced with minimal physical contact. Since the start of the pandemic all youth sports have been treated the same, indoors and outdoors.

Rep teams did get to see limited game action late last summer against each other since Delta is the only association in its district.

Health restrictions were then tightened again in November and have remained that way since with high daily case numbers.

“I am going to stand behind my executive and say there are definitely some things that I feel are unfair to the softball com-

munity,” said Brown-Rooke.

“There are several sports played indoors yet we saw restrictions lifted quicker last year for them than what we even had.

“I really hope we will be able to at least play neighboring communities as of June anyways.”

Last week, Softball Canada announced all national championships have been cancelled for a second straight year. Western Canadian Championships will likely follow suit, which will at least open the door for Softball BC to extend its campaign into September if need be to offer some form of season-ending tournaments, depending on

Hugh was born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan, December 15, 1928 and played professional hockey for the Chicago Blackhawks during 19501951 season and was then traded to the Detroit Red Wings for their 1952 Stanley Cup win, landing his name on the 1952 Stanley Cup. Hugh continued with the Western Hockey League Edmonton Flyers, leading the team to multiple championships as Captain. Hugh remained an avid hockey lover until the end, passing on his passion for sports to his children and all those that were lucky enough to have their paths cross with him.

Leading a legendary life, Hugh looked back fondly on his 12-year NHL / WHL career and the friends and teammates he had along the way.

While in Edmonton, Hugh met his soulmate, the beautiful Patricia Barry, and remained deeply in love for over 65 years. Together they raised a beautiful family and actively supported their passion in sports, academics, and life. Hugh then enjoyed a successful business career with Christie’s and balanced his priorities, spending time with his loved ones, providing support and encouragement, and always deeply proud of their accomplishments.

Despite his many achievements, what Hugh will be remembered for most is his role as a kind and loving friend, father, grandfather, and husband.

Hugh’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, and his loving wife, Pat. All those who were lucky enough to love and be loved by Hugh attest that he will be missed beyond measure.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, May 7th, 2021 at 11:00 am.

Sylvia Joyce, born May 1st, 1936 in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England to William (Bill) and May Dent passed away peacefully April 28th, 2021 with Family at her side.

Sylvia grew up in Gateshead, England where after completing Brighton Road High School, she worked as a short-hand typist for Warner Brothers Films.

Sylvia often told the story as a youth, she and her girlfriend knocked on a door looking for a young man they knew. His older brother, Peter Joyce opened the door and shoo’d them away. Sylvia claims she told her girlfriend as they walked away, she was going to marry Peter. Sylvia and Peter were married 8 years later in 1958, remaining faithful companions, usually seen together, until Peter’s passing in 2015.

Peter and Sylvia had 3 sons and immigrated to Canada in 1966. Settling in Tsawwassen in 1969, it was a community in which they felt happy and blessed to raise their family. Sylvia was a friend to many and always available to volunteer her time. A committed letter writer and card sender, who adapted to the times with email, but never forgot the personal touch of the handwritten note. Sylvia stayed connected to the many people in her life including childhood friends who’s lives had taken them to different parts of the world. With Peter, she was fortunate to journey to 39 countries with a common stop home in England to see Family and friends. Sylvia lived her life with a glass half full personality, always with a smile and a make the best of the situation attitude. Thankfully, she passed this spirit to many. She will always remain in our thoughts.

Sylvia was predeceased by her husband Peter (2015) and her sister Irene Timbey. Sylvia will be forever loved and remembered by her family; Gavin (Sheila), Bill (Nina) and Darren (Dana). Her loving niece Carol Redhead. Grandchildren; Stephen, Katie, Emma, Ryan, Will, Alex, Rob, Lauren, Mackenna, and Addison.

The Family sincerely thanks the compassion and quality of care by Delta Hospital. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation or The Alzheimer Society of Canada in Sylvia’s memory.

The Family will hold a private ceremony, in which Peter and Sylvia will be again together.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date, when social norms allow.
