Tsawwassen First Nation opens new youth centre Centre will provide a place for young people to learn and explore their passions IAN JACQUES

The Tsawwassen First Nation has reason to celebrate, as they officially opened its new youth centre.

The opening, conducted through a virtual celebration last Friday morning, marks another milestone achievement for the TFN. “Our young people are our future.

They needed a place where they felt welcomed and valued,” said TFN Chief Ken Baird. “This centre will be a place of learning, nurturing and preparing our youth for becoming our next generation of leadership. This centre will offer both indoor and outdoor activities, a computer lab, games room, an art room, TV room, a community kitchen and large dining area – all spaces that the youth can enjoy together and call their own. This is truly a momentous day for our youth and members. My hands go up to each and every one who made this happen.”

The new youth centre, located at 2287 Tsawwassen Drive, gives the TFN community a home for their youth programs, allowing the creative freedom to expand their physical literacy, artistic, culinary and multimedia programming to better support their youth. The 12,000 square foot building will allow more programs to be offered simultaneously for a variety of age-appropriate groups, and the kitchen, weight room and gym will allow new programs to be offered.

The Tsawwassen First Nation celebrated the grand opening of its new youth centre on Friday.

“I offer my sincere congratulations to Chief Baird, Executive Council, the Tsawwassen Legislature and the Tsawwassen First Nation for the grand opening of their new community youth centre,” said Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, on behalf of the Catherine McKenna, Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.

“This new two-storey building provides space for people to come together, to share experiences and to create memories for generations to come. Funded with a $5 million contribution from the Government of Canada, this project is a great example of what we can accom-

plish when we work closely together to fund community-specific projects.”

TFN artists Karl Morgan, Merle Williams and former Chief Bryce Williams contributed artwork on the exterior and interior pole structure as well as on windows, benches, walls and floors to bring some of the community’s culture into the new space.

In 2017, TFN committed to providing a facility for youth to feel at home and excel in their endeavours. To ensure the design reflected their needs, TFN worked closely with young people throughout the development process.

Delta student’s concern for India farmers gets city politicians’ attention MARK BOOTH

Maya Dhillon’s passion and knowledge of the ongoing farming protests in India certainly got the attention of her hometown.

The Grade 5 student at Southpointe Academy wrote a detailed letter to local politicians on the farmers’ battle to protect their livelihoods as the Indian government has proposed new laws that would greatly impact the value of the products they grow.

“As descendents of Punjabi farmers, I support this protest because the consequences of these bills are far greater than the loss of land assets and money. They threaten the essence of our culture and identity and basic human rights. All of my ancestors were farmers,” she wrote.

On Friday, Dhillon and her parents were invited to Delta City Hall where she met with Mayor George Harvie, councillors Dylan Kruger and Alicia Guichon, and Delta South MLA Ian Paton.

“It’s so important for the farming community there to have a good standard of living and the only way they can have that is by getting decent value for the products that they grow. I really feel for them and behalf of myself as mayor and council we really appreciate (Maya) coming forward and bringing it to the attention of our community,” said Harvie.

He went on to encourage Dhillon to continue to have a voice in the community and to consider one day joining the Mayor’s Youth Council.

“We need to listen to people your age to ensure we are doing the right things on decisions that we are making that effects the next 10, 20 or 30 years,” Harvie said. “Even myself being on the Metro and Translink boards, we are making decisions that are

going be there for 100 years. We got to make sure we’re not thinking about right now but what’s going to be happening in your future.”

As a farmer and Official Opposition Agriculture Critic, Paton said he certainly understands Dhillon’s concerns and the difficult situation for Indian farmers.

“In Canada we have Supply Management for different types of farming, so there is a guaranteed minimum price you will be paid and that way farmers can budget every day of the year how on how much they are going to bring in for their products,” he said. “In India they are a losing that opportunity to at least have a guaranteed price and make a decent living.”

Guichon’s family is also heavily involved in the farming community.

She said she appreciated Dhillon generating further awareness on the Indian farmers’ plight.

“We have so many farm workers here that are just one or two generations (removed from India), so it really hits close to home for a lot of people,” she said. “Just to imagine it happening here with the censorship and all the things that they are going through.

It’s so hard for us to fathom. That’s why it’s so great bringing that awareness to a farming community like Delta.”

Kruger was impressed with just how much detail Dhillon laid out in her letter.

“The letter was well-written and wellresearched and Maya is only in Grade 5,” he said. Just putting it altogether was really impressive. I’m really proud of her and having her in our community.”

B.C. blueberry growers dodge U.S. sanctions SANDOR GYARMATI

It is great news for local blueberry growers who were facing the prospect U.S. tariffs or quotas.

The U.S. International Trade Commission on Thursday issued a statement that it “determined that fresh, chilled or frozen blueberries are not being imported into the United States in such increased quantities as to be a substantial cause of serious injury, or the threat of serious injury, to the domestic industry producing an article like or directly competitive with the imported article.”

The commission also stated, “As a result

of today’s vote, the investigation will end, and the Commission will not recommend a remedy to the President. The Commission will submit its report containing its injury determination and the basis for it to the President by March 29, 2021.”

The determination was made following an investigation initiated last September at the request of U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who asked the commission to initiate a Section 201 global safeguard investigation into the extent to which increased imports of blueberries may have caused serious injury or threat to domestic blueberry growers.

The request followed the release of

the “Report on Seasonal and Perishable Products in U.S. Commerce” which was authored by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, outlining actions to support American producers of seasonal and perishable fruits and vegetables.

The B.C. Blueberry Council issued a statement saying it was pleased with the conclusion of the investigation following the commission’s review of the evidence.

“Now our members can focus on the growing year ahead, instead of being concerned with trade penalties,” remarked Council chair Jack Bates.

DPD investigating targeted shooting in North Delta IAN JACQUES

Delta police continue to investigate what they are calling “a targeted shooting” in North Delta.

According to DPD, a shooting between vehicles occurred in the 8800 block of Delvista Drive, around 5 p.m. on Sunday “The incident appears to be targeted,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf. “While fortunately no injuries have been reported to police, this type of violence is completely unacceptable. Innocent people could have been hurt.”

Leykauf said officers immediately responded to the scene, and began collecting evidence, including shell casings. The DPD Major Crimes unit has taken control of the investigation.

Police seized a vehicle that is believed to be connected to the shooting. The vehicle was located in Langley and had been burned.

DPD held the scene overnight to ensure all related evidence had been located.

DPD say in the majority of cases, thieves have accessed unlocked vehicles.

“These cases impact people and we just want to remind people,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf. “Things that are being stolen include cash, credit cards, and garage door openers – not stuff that people want to go missing, so this is a timely reminder.”

No community has been spared the tragic consequences of the overdose crises, including the City of Delta.

The B.C. Coroners Service last week reported that 2020 was the province’s worst year in terms of number of lives lost due to the effects of toxic illicit drugs.

There were 1,716

deaths, representing a 74 per cent increase over the number of deaths recorded in 2019. The number of illicit drug toxicity deaths last year equates to about 4.7 deaths per day, which is two deaths

per day higher than in 2019, according to the report.

homicides, suicides and prescription-drug related deaths combined.

Fentanyl was detected in more than 80 per cent of illicit drug toxicity deaths last year.

According to the B.C. Coroners Service, Delta had 14 deaths in 2019 and 19 deaths in 2020.

A Delta staff report to city council late last year noted there’s been a sevenfold increase in overdose fatalities in the city over the decade.

The report said the public health emergency declaration by the provincial government allowed for the collection of, as well as access to, more robust and up-todate data on overdose activity across the province, including overdose and fatality data from Fraser Health and the B.C. Coroners Service.

Between January and August 2020, there were 137 overdose events in Delta attended by B.C. Ambulance, 17 of those were in August alone.

In 2019, there were 134 overdose events per

100,000 population.

Last year saw a 97 per cent increase in the overdose event rate in Delta, with 265 per 100,000 population as of late summer.

However, while Delta had the highest percentage rate change in the region, the city was still at the lower end in terms of total numbers compared with some neighbouring municipalities.

In a letter to Federal Minister of Health Patty Hajdu, Mayor George Harvie reiterated a call by the province and other municipalities to recognize the overdose crisis as a national public health emergency, and work with the provinces to develop a comprehensive plan to address this issue.

He noted that, compounded by the COVID19 pandemic, communities across Canada are seeing a devastating increase in the number of opioid-related overdoses and deaths, and the City of Delta has not been immune to the impacts.

That’s how Delta MP Carla Qualtrough described funding for the George Massey Tunnel replacement project during a Delta Chamber of Commerce virtual federal budget consultation session last Wednesday.

The session was one of several feedback sessions in Delta on the budget, aimed at gathering questions, concerns and comments on what should be the federal government’s priorities as it develops its next budget for this spring.

Chamber executive director Garry Shearer was the first to pose a question, asking what the federal government had in mind when it comes to infrastructure projects, particularly shovel-ready projects.

Qualtrough quickly focused on the much talked about planned replacement for the aging tunnel, describing it as a project that has spanned her political career, and which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the last election campaign assured would receive federal dollars.

“We have not yet, as a federal government, received a request

from the province to help fund a tunnel replacement. They are at the point now where they have done the analysis, they’ve got a couple of different business case options that the province is considering and my understanding is, very soon, it will go through their own internal cabinet and treasury board processes and come out with a request from the federal government,” Qualtrough explained.

Qualtrough noted she’s been through two elections where it has been stated the federal government would support the project, once a request for funding is submitted, and they’re still waiting.

“What I can tell you is that I have confirmed very recently with Infrastructure (Canada), with the deputy prime minister and finance, with the prime minister’s office, that the prime minister remains true to his commitment the last election. When an opportunity comes our way to help build and support this project, we will be there,” she added.

Qualtrough said it’s uncertain if a request for funding will be submitted in time for the next federal budget because it’s “going to be a multi-billion dollar build and I can’t slip it into the finance minis-

ter’s basket of stuff he could possibly fund at the last minute.”

She also noted the project is at least two or three years away from beginning regardless, due to required environmental assessments, which leaves enough time for the government to find the funding needed.

“I’m kind of in a holding pattern as the rest of my federal team until the Province of B.C. asks for support formerly from us, but I think it’s coming,” she said.

The B.C. government early last year unveiled two possible new crossing options, one being an eight-lane tunnel while another is a bridge with the same number of lanes.

A business case on the options was completed later in the year and is now in the hands of the transportation ministry.

The next step is for government to review the submission, consult with partners and stakeholders and make a final decision regarding the crossing, according to the ministry.

Once a thorough review of the business case has been completed, government will decide on an option. The business case will only be made public following that decision.

he numbers are dire.

Last week the B.C. Coroners Service reported that 2020 was the province’s worst year for deaths due to the overdose

crisis.

There were 1,716 deaths, representing a 74 per cent increase over the number of deaths recorded in 2019. Fentanyl was detected in more than 80 per cent of illicit drug toxicity deaths last year.

Delta had 14 deaths in 2019 and 19 deaths in 2020, according to the statistics released.

The toxic illicit drug supply in this province has also claimed more lives than motor-vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides and prescription-drug related deaths combined.

In 2018, the Delta Overdose Community Action Team (DCAT) was established as a community-driven collaborative group, co-chaired by Deltassist and FHA. They have worked hard to develop an evidence-based action plan to address the impacts of COVID-19 on the overdose situation in Delta. But it is clear when you look at the numbers from the Coroners Service, more needs to be done.

Recently, Delta Mayor George Harvie reiterated a call by the provincial government and other municipalities for the federal government to recognize the overdose crisis as a national public health emergency, and work with the provinces to develop a comprehensive plan to address this issue.

This is a step in the process, but it is just that…a step.

As a community we need to be demanding more out of our political leaders. So that means continuing to press Delta council for more support at the local level, continuing to press more action from our provincial leaders, and from our federal leaders.

We are in the midst of a global health crisis in COVID-19, but there is another crisis right here in B.C. and here in Delta that demands more attention.

I’ll admit that I don’t have all the answers, but clearly more needs to be done to shine the spotlight on this crisis.

Forget the groundhog, spring is coming

A

couple of weeks ago, a friend sent a video from Florida, saying how nice it was. It happened to be a nice day, so I went to the beach and shot my own video.

Beautiful sunny day, snow capped mountains in the background, wearing a light sweater.

See, we don’t live in igloos up here.

I guess I spoke too soon.

Winter arrived at the end of last week.

I shouldn’t have been surprised. It seems that, no matter what, we are going to get a certain amount of winter, it all depends on when. Those years when we hardly get any snow, when we start bragging about golfing, and using the regular greens, in January always come back to haunt us at some point.

Mid-February seems to be a good time to remind us we are Canadian. It’s essentially the middle of winter, roughly half way between Dec. 21 and March 21. Seems appropriate for a little snow.

I remember a Valentine’s Day many years ago. I went into an all-day meeting in the morning, streets were clear and wet.

p.m., there was 10 centimetres on the roads. I got home from the meeting, turned around and drove to North Van to see my girlfriend. I don’t know how I made it. I didn’t have flowers either. She married me anyway.

It was even cold enough last week that I noticed someone getting out for a little pond skating. With COVID-19 restrictions, people have had a lot more time on their hands, and in other parts of the country have taken the opportunity to build some pretty fancy outdoor skating rinks. The homemade Zambonis have been quite something, all you need is a wagon, a storage container, some PVC pipe and an old

towel, and you too can have a perfect skating surface. Maybe that’s the new training to be a back-up goalie.

So with the street blanketed in white, my car almost visible under the blanket of winter, I sent a picture to my friend with the caption ‘Spoke too soon’.

But now winter is really behind us, and spring is on the way. In a couple weeks, I’ll send a new video with the blossoms on the trees. Take that.

I don’t need a groundhog to tell me when spring is coming, I have my neighbour’s tree. It’s the first one to start blooming, to indicate that nicer days are ahead. The blossoms were opening before the snow, but now are making their appearance again.

After the long dark winter we’ve endured, there’s hope for a brighter future.

Stay safe, we’ll be in the sunshine soon enough.

Editor needs to do his homework Editor: Re: A struggle for power (editorial, Optimist, Feb. 11) Just your opening sentence does not make any sense.

There is no sad and shocking struggle for power and control. It is a government usurpative desire to be in absolute control of people’s lives to the death. It is a onesided attack on the management of the facility, built with money many citizens donated. It is an unprecedented desire to convert the palliative care facility into a place where people can be killed as if there are not enough places where such a drastic act of ending one’s life can be legally done.

It is a frontal attack by the government with all the power and might on a facility built with people money and run by volunteers who care to provide

palliative care to those who wish to end their life naturally.

I agree where you say that, “It is simply deplorable what has happened to a facility that has had, up until this past year or so, been a remarkable place of care and support.”

You are correct. It been a remarkable place of care and support before the bloodthirsty government decided to impose its power on this group of virtually powerless people who have been running this facility flawlessly and to the satisfaction of its residents, their families, and friends.

Unfortunately, you are either ignorant of that facility or you know of it from people who want to convert it into a place of killing, not caring for its inhabitants. Otherwise, you would not write the following: “Some say a

glowing reputation has been ruined by a board that wants to ignore what is right for their selfish gain and ideologies.”

Only an ignorant could say something like that. What selfish gain and what ideologies are you talking about? I am guessing you do not even know.

I have lived in Ladner for over 30 years, not like you who has come here just a few moments ago.

You have no understanding of the recent Ladner history including a wellrun palliative care facility which has been valued so highly and appreciated by many who have been in its care for all those years.

I would suggest that you do your homework better, listen to both sides of the issue and then make your qualified stand.

Not in the interests of Delta Editor: I do not believe the current board of the Delta Hospice Society in any way represents the will of the people of Delta.

It seems that a very well-organized religious extremist group signed up a horde of new members that overwhelmed the long-standing members who truly represented the community. I understand many of the

new members do not even live in Delta, but most are members of the religious group with their narrow agenda.

It reminds me of the membership drive carried out by Andrew Scheer to win the Conservative leadership. Dairy farmers from Quebec all signed up in the tens of thousands and assured his victory.

They had a narrow agen-

da of fighting to preserve their near monopoly and Scheer made promises to them to win. The national interest was not of interest to them. How did that all turn out?

Similarly, this board is not fighting for the interests of Delta, only their narrow agenda.

Kudos to the provincial government for standing firm.

Diverting attention from reality Editor: Re: Food insecurity in the City of Delta, (Optimist, Feb. 2) What the City bureaucracy busies itself avoiding is the obvious: food insecurity is a direct result of lack of social/ affordable housing, lack of jobs that pay a living wage and lack of affordable childcare.

While BC’s provincial government is working hard at addressing childcare needs, alternating Liberal and

Conservative federal governments since the 1990s have eliminated the housing portfolio and rewarded corporations that pay low wages. No food bank, no food initiative and no amount of neighbourly goodwill will is going to change poverty that is legislated to occur.

Mayor Harvie needs to stand up at UBCM and say so. All he’s doing with these task forces is playing at helping, while diverting attention from reality.

Situation is as laughable as your headline Editor: I quite literally laughed out loud at the front page headline of your Feb. 11, 2021 edition “Delta Mayor says as police board chair he’s forced to be a “defenceless punching bag.”

This isn’t the first time Mr. Harvie has cried foul.

In your Sept. 27, 2018 edition the headline read “Delta Mayor calls claims against him baseless and shameful” after he was called out for his inappropriate behaviour during a meeting with Metro Vancouver staff.

He refused to accept accountability for his actions then and based on his recent comments, that pattern continues as he passes the buck over the $42,000 spin doctor expenditure the Delta Police used.

Mr. Harvie states that he “can’t vote, can’t have an opinion, can’t

make a motion and can’t make a statement unless approved by the board.”

He goes on to say “I wonder why I am even there?” Frankly, so do I. I doubt Mr. Harvie needs to be reminded that his position on the Delta Police board is an appointed one and I know of no impediment to him resigning his position. If he is as outraged and frustrated as he would like us to believe, why wouldn’t he? It would certainly free him from his appointed role as punching bag while allowing himself to have an opinion and make a statement.

Instead he leverages the rules keeping him quiet to wash his political paws.

Among the many questions the Optimist didn’t ask is if, as chair of the Delta Police board,

was Mr. Harvie aware of the plan to spend $42,000 of our money?

As Coun. Lois Jackson states, “It is the mayor’s responsibility to bring forward to council issues regarding money.”

She said she never had a problem and I believe her.

While policy may not be within the realm of the Delta Police board and obviously expenditures and not policy within the realm of Mr. Harvie’s job description, either he failed to diligently perform the duties of his office or he was complicit in the decision.

The BC Police Act is a convenient excuse for his lack of leadership and accountability.

If Mr. Harvie doesn’t want to be a defenceless punching bag, perhaps he should stop behaving like one.

The expense of crisis communication for the Dubords should not be

born from the taxpayer as last I looked Lorraine Dubord is not an elected official (nor is her husband for that matter).

Does this warrant so much news coverage?

Editor: The news story about the Delta Police Chief’s wife allegedly spraying a beach walker with her garden hose, and the subsequent aftermath, must be the biggest news story of the year, based on the amount of media coverage it has received.

Okay, we can all admit that the homeowner did bad, and the beach walker should not have been sprayed with water.

The subsequent media attention this received was hilarious. I would have relegated it to the Optimist’s Crime Beat

section and moved on. It’s a trivial matter blown way out of proportion.

The subsequent news story about the Delta police department spending $42,000 on a public relations endeavour is somewhat more interesting. Why anyone would initiate the spending of taxpayers’ money on a non-event that was going to quickly blow over is beyond me. This is worth Delta city council looking into, however, again, let them look into it and fix it and let’s move on. Let’s not waste a ton of city council time and news coverage.

Province launches grant program to support local business SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s a good step, but a lot of small businesses suffering through the pandemic may not be able to take advantage.

That is Delta Chamber of Commerce executive

director Garry Shearer’s take on the recent announcement by the provincial government of the Launch Online Grant program, designed to help more than 1,500 eligible small-andmedium-sized B.C. businesses adapt to changes

in consumer behaviour and pivot to market their products online.

Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, announced government is investing $12 million to help businesses launch or

upgrade an online store.

Up to 25 per cent of the program funds will be reserved for regional and Indigenous businesses.

The province notes people have increased their reliance on online shopping with more

than $305 billion in e-commerce sales in Canada in 2019.

E-commerce sales are projected to have doubled through 2020 and are expected to increase further in 2021.

Saying anything to help the small business sector will be well received, including the new grant of up to $7,500 to enhance online shopping, Shearer noted many small-and-medium sized business just have a very basic online presence or none at all.

“The reality is a lot of small business owners who have no experience with online transactions, whether they’re going to be able to take advantage of this or not is yet to be seen. It’s very positive the government is reaching out to those businesses that certainly have the motivation

and incentive, but for a small business that’s never thought about doing anything online, to start from ground zero is going to cost them more than $10,000 to do something like that,” he said.

“Doing online business is not just a matter of turning on an online website and suddenly you have business. It’s turning it on and doing everything you would normally do through any channel of promoting your business or your products and all the customer service stuff that has to go behind that in order to make it an effective channel to market… it’s a great initiative and a way to bring small businesses to the table to at least think about an online presence, so that in itself is positive,” he added.

The City of Delta is asking the province for better enforcement at the Brunswick Point portion of the Roberts Bank

noted the city and the province have a long history of promoting habitat protection and resource management at Brunswick Point while also allowing public use.

The City of Delta recently installed no parking signs on a road near a popular trail, but only where parking was never allowed in the first place.

That’s according to city manager Sean McGill regarding a recent resident complaint about no parking signs installed near the Brunswick Point Trail at the end of River Road West.

McGill explained the signs were installed in response to ongoing challenges and concerns that have been raised about locations where the road width does not support parking without vehicles blocking a portion of the travel lane.

“In other words, parking has never been allowed in these locations, but people continued to park on the road edge blocking portions of the road,” McGill said in an emailed response to the Optimist. “This led to an unsafe

situation and the inability for large farm vehicles to navigate. In addition, the signs create safe turning radiuses at corners and ensure emergency access to the dike is not blocked. With the sheer number of illegally parked cars, it was very difficult for vehicles to safely navigate through this area. We also provided signage to reduce the number of vehicles either blocking access to or u-turning on private property.

“The signs are really ensuring safety to dike users and local residents. We also did not restrict all parking in the area, only those spots that could not physically accommodate the parking. We will continue to look for other options to ensure that residents have access to outdoor space and will be reporting back to council.”

McGill added they are trying to balance the increased demand for access to recreational areas in the community with safety and impacts to local residents.

“Delta Council recently received correspondence from residents regarding users venturing off the dike into the foreshore marsh within the Wildlife Management Area, and not respecting wildlife in the area. City of Delta is concerned about physical impacts to the sensitive marsh area and negative effects on wildlife,” wrote Harvie.

The Wildlife Act provides authority for regional orders prohibiting the harassment of

wildlife within wildlife management areas, noted Harvie.

“Delta is committed to continuing to work together with Ministry staff to implement effective measures to protect wildlife and important habitat at Brunswick Point, including by improving signage and providing ongoing education to users of the municipal dike and adjacent provincial Wildlife Management Area,” he stated.

Delta council recently discussed a letter from a concerned resident about photographers following hawks, owls and other birds into the marsh.

It’s a situation that could be seen recently when a dozen photogra-

phers were in the marsh, and as some began to leave, more arrived.

A memo from civic staff notes the Roberts Bank Wildlife Management Area is under the jurisdiction of the B.C. government.

Staff already forwarded the letter to a regional wildlife coordinator for feedback.

“The increasing public use of Brunswick Point and the potential impacts to the habitat in this area is being reviewed by provincial staff. B.C. conservation officers enforce hunting regulations and attend Brunswick Point periodically to respond to complaints about illegal hunting activity and monitor the managed harvests in the area,” the memo explains.

Lent began Feb. 17 on Ash Wednesday.

Lent, the 40-day season leading up to Easter, has been set aside by the church as a season of repentance and fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. It is also time to find stillness in a hectic world.

Hour upon hour spent in front of screens, the constant inflow of information, much of it negative, the state of vigilance brought about by COVID-19, coupled with living physically contracted lives, can lead to high stress, and even burnout.

Just as the physical body needs proper care, so does the soul.

When Jesus teaches us how to pray, he instructs us to, “go into your room and shut the door (Matthew 6:6).” As

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacting his catering business, Russell Pohl is still getting plenty of inquiries these days – they just happen be from film location managers.

Movie and television productions have taken Metro Vancouver by storm since health restrictions were eased last summer following a significant dark period.

Pohl operates Mr. Mom’s Catering World out of East Delta Hall where he has been unable to host weddings, banquets and other functions for nearly a year.

The historic building has been utilized on a number occasions by a major Warner Brothers production slated to make its television premiere later this month.

“We have been very blessed because as you can imagine with COVID our catering piece of business has been up the creek without a paddle. It’s been very positive for us,” said Pohl.

Along the way Pohl has learned plenty about the film industry and has even reached out for the necessary support to ensure his business is being fairly compensated and his best interests are being looked after.

“Part of the blessing for us is I employ people that do or have been in the industry and we are kind of their second job, so we got a lot of inside info there,” Pohl added. “The truth is I can imagine it can be a very frustrating system and process because every production and every company are different. Our personal overall experience has been amazing because, again, we kind of walked into it with eyes wide open and the beginners’ knowledge behind us. The companies that we work with have been very good to us. The key is to educate yourself.

“There are companies out there that you can hire that will actually be your liaison and your onsite guy, so you are not dealing with any of that silliness. I recommend any business or private resident to spend the extra money and get the help.”

Not every business is in awe of the bright lights

When owner Megan Kureluk learned a Netflix production was going to film steps from her location, she was frustrated the usual polling of impacted businesses didn’t take place. It is required to receive a filming permit from the City of Delta.

“I received a letter the week of Jan. 18 of what they were purposing and it said the permit was contingent on a poll to be put to business people. I was never polled. The letter was actually the polling and the reason they couldn’t do a traditional poll with signatures was because of COVID,” said Kureluk.

“When you think about it, it’s hilarious.

They can’t send somebody around with a poll but they can send two people around to silence my concerns.”

Kureluk added she wasn’t offered any compensation but says her concern has more to do with the inconvenience, never mind it was taking place amid a pandemic.

“It’s not even a matter of the compen-

sation. It’s a matter of the lying from the production companies and the disrespect from Delta to its permanent business people that is super-duper frustrating,” she said.

Impacted even more by the production was Heritage House Interiors which is next door to the Dragonfly Gallery where much of the filming took place.

Owner Jamie Fraser has dealt with location managers over the years, first when the furniture store was located on 48th Avenue in the heart of the village before heading west to Chisholm Street.

After saying no to the initial offer, he eventually came to an agreement on compensation for the loss of business with the Netflix production.

“COVID is a pretty weak excuse for not doing a poll. It is one of those things where they think the less information is better so we don’t get the full picture,” said Fraser.

“We have had the movie companies out here before. It is an inconvenience for sure and it definitely effects our

business. Eighty to ninety percent of the time they are fine. It just depends on the construction crew (for set building).

These guys kind of sprung it on us at the last minute, but I think it’s of the nature of the COVID times.”

Meetings with city did lead to improvements

It was through a series of meetings with business and home owners that the City of Delta made several key provisions for filming in Ladner Village and beyond.

Topping the list is Angusfilm, a film site supervision company, retained by the city to provide a film liaison officer to be present during onsite shooting and assist with business owners and residents’ concerns.

Other improvements have included: * A minimum seven days between filming and special events in Ladner Village.

“We are really trying to work with the community to make this a better experience for everyone,” said Delta’s Director of Engineering Steven Lan. “I think the feedback I have got has been pretty good. We will try to continue to address everyone’s concerns, but there is a certain limit to all of this as well.

“The (financial) negotiations are always with the film company directly.

There are various means through Creative BC in terms of if there is a dispute.”

Ladner Business Association president Jill McKnight has noticed the improvements since the City of Delta teamed up with Creative BC to host a public meeting on the film industry a year ago at Harris Barn.

“One of the significant things to come out of those meetings that led up to Harris Barn was the recommendation that a film liaison company be brought in. I do feel the city has made a great choice with Angusfilms,” said

McKnight. “He came out one day and I took him around to introduce him to number of business owners, just to start to build relationships with people.

There is going to be ups and downs and it was important to him to get to know them and understand what they face with their business. Each is going to be different.

“I think people do really come here with the intention of wanting to work together. There is definitely an understanding that the businesses are here all year along and film companies are guests.”

Compensation guidelines for loss of business

Don’t have dollar signs in your eyes if a production company wants to use your store front.

For some local businesses that have been greatly impacted by the COVID health restrictions, a movie shoot can be a welcome relief. However, under normal circumstances the compensation should add up to what typical sales would have been during the production period.

companies and businesses.

“Compensation is always a challenging thing. Each of us know our business and what I can speak to,” said McKnight who has had productions impact her South Coast Casuals store including ABC’s crime drama Big Sky in December.

“The Creative BC Loss of Business Compensation Form is a tool to start a conversation. You look at your previous four weeks of that concurrent day’s average of gross profit margin and that is the compensation. If you make 100 or 200 bucks extra that’s great but it should

ultimately be a net zero process.”

McKnight adds other intangibles have to be factored into the compensation too such as the time of year. Big Sky’s December ask was not only during the peak holiday shopping season but McKnight had to remove all Christmas decorations then pay her merchandiser a higher rate to put them back up again.

“If a business is prepared to document and show it I will be the first person in line to say that is what they should be compensated but you have the documentation to support it,” she added.

Chamber of Commerce Week celebrates hope, resilience for business GARRY SHEARER

This year, BC Chamber of Commerce Week is being proclaimed from Feb. 15 to 19, and rather than celebrating progression and growth presented through opportunities created by chambers of commerce as we traditionally would, we celebrate resilience, adaptability, and courage to fight against the odds, encouraged by this powerful business network.

Every year the Delta Chamber of Commerce and our fellow chambers of commerce and boards of trade work tirelessly to help grow the people who power B.C. Here in Delta we advocate on behalf of more than 450 member businesses to all levels of government. When combined with the collective insight and influence of the others in our provincial network, that advocacy represents more than 36,000 businesses in B.C. and 200,000 across the country. However, 2020 was far from normal, and

in fact one of the most difficult challenges in our collective history. Despite being founded in Delta in 1910 – prior to the last global pandemic – COVID-19 has brought about new and devastating effects on the families, communities, and businesses across the province.

Despite these extraordinary circumstances, businesses here in Delta have persevered and the grassroots network of chambers worked to gather insight from businesses of all sizes, from all sectors of the economy, and in all corners of the province.

We spent 2020 connecting with business owners and leaders; in town halls, one-on-one Zoom and phone calls, by email, during virtual networking sessions, in province-wide “pulse check surveys,” and through in-person visits to businesses to provide information on government resources and to ensure they had access to necessary supports.

Coalescing the insights and data into a voice that speaks for business, we advocated as a

local chamber and through our senior chambers on the issues that businesses were facing in Delta and what was needed to address them. What we heard was a story of hardship but also one of tremendous resilience.

During this tumultuous year, the provincial government recognized the reach of the B.C. Chamber’s network by inviting it to sit on the provincial Economic Recovery Task Force.

This task force was formed to ensure the province’s economic response to COVID-19 was effective and responsive to the needs of British Columbians.

Likewise in Delta, the Delta Chamber was invited by the City of Delta to sit on its Community Resiliency and Economic Recovery Support Team (CRERST.) The collaborations that have taken place on the provincial and local levels highlighted the benefits that healthy relationships between chambers of commerce and government can bring to a region.

While chambers and government do not always see eyeto-eye, they did in B.C. when

chambers backed their proposal for a national paid sick leave program during COVID-19. The province agreed with that we needed to protect our employees without strapping the cost of such a program onto the already bending backs of businesses.

With both parties united in their efforts, we soon saw a national sick pay program developed, saving B.C. businesses millions of dollars while allowing employees to safely stay home when they needed to.

The Chamber network in B.C. continued to join forces with government on a number of programs and initiatives throughout the onset of COVID19 and into the fragile recovery stage; urging government to set aside measures that may increase costs, add to the regulatory burden, or create further uncertainty for B.C. employers during this already ambiguous time.

These efforts resulted in more wins for business like when the government changed their stance on the temporary lay-off provision, allowing employers

more time to make final decisions to rehire laid off employees or pay them severance and allowing businesses to keep their valued workers connected to them while they worked to bring operations back to the point where they could re-call all staff to active duty.

It’s now been over a year since the pandemic first arrived in our province. Many of the business support programs have remained in place and more than 70 per cent of companies in B.C. are accessing them to continue their operations.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce is continuing to provide one-on-one COVID-19 support to all businesses across Delta.

A vaccine is starting to be distributed and slowly, but surely, hope is being restored. As we re-establish balance and health in our communities and economies, your Delta Chamber of Commerce and our network of fellow chambers and boards of trade continue to work for B.C. as the light at the end of the tunnel grows brighter.

Advocacy has always been at the heart of Delta Chamber mission LYDIA ELDER

When it was first established in 1910, the Delta Board of Trade sent a petition to Delta Municipal Council for a bridge to be built across the Fraser River. One hundred and ten years later the same organization is again advocating for a crossing to the Fraser River.

At the May 2020 B.C. Chamber of Commerce AGM, the Delta of Commerce’s policy resolution called “Expediting the George Massey Crossing Project” received the endorsement of all 125 chamber and boards of trade in the province; representing 36,000 businesses. The result of this resolution’s adoption is that it became part of the B.C. Chamber’s advocacy agenda with the provincial government.

The mission of the Delta Chamber is to promote growth and prosperity through advocacy on behalf of Delta businesses. Over the past year, this advocacy work has not only included what appears to be the evergreen question of crossing the Fraser River, but also other provincially and federally-adopted Delta Chamber policies on investing in the growing Agritech sector, development of a long-term provincial infrastructure investment strategy, and federal funding for flood protection measures like the dikes that protect the businesses, homes, and farms of our community.

Here in our community the Chamber is active in listening to our businesses to better understand what issues they’re facing and advocating with decision makers at all levels of government to implement change. Before the pandemic we were already hearing from Delta businesses that they were struggling to recruit and retain the right workers. The most frequently expressed concern by businesses has been the negative effect of traffic delays, stalls, and accidents at the George Massey Tunnel. It negatively impacts their ability to recruit and retain

employees, to access couriers and transportation services, and to reliably make deliveries. When looking at public transit alternatives, businesses on Annacis Island, in Tilbury Industrial Park, and in Delta’s other industrial business areas struggle with the lack of public transit available to feasibly run multiple shifts, which limits their competitive advantage and ability to maximize production.

Translink and Metro Vancouver’s planning processes do not currently include significant change to the level of transit service to these areas.

Once the pandemic arrived, however, we saw a change to our advocacy work.

Some companies provided essential services and not only needed to continue their work but to upscale their production and distribution capacity with increased restrictions, such as interruptions in international supply chains and workers with symptoms needing to self-isolate, or whose children no longer had childcare or schooling available.

Other businesses went from active and successful to being ordered closed due to Public Health Orders. They needed support navigating their business offering or with what it meant to re-open with an appropriate WorkSafeBC COVID-19 Safety Plan.

As an active partner of Delta’s Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Support Team (CRERST), the Chamber has been connecting with businesses across Delta to provide COVID19 support. We’re listening to business owners to better understand the issues that face their industry to effectively be the voice of business in Delta to all levels of government in our advocacy.

We’re working in partnership with local business association, who are tirelessly promoting their communities, and with Tourism Delta and the City of Delta who are consistently working to encourage locals to #supportlocal here in Delta. In response to COVID-19 we are all working together in a “Team Delta” approach.

Thanks for this great question. Hypertension Canada recently released new guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure in adults. The goal is to reduce the potential harms (kidney damage, heart attack &/or stroke) from untreated or under-treated high blood pressure. Approximately one-quarter of all Canadians have high blood pressure and it remains one of the highest risk factors for early death or disability. The new guidelines state for a health adult with no risk factors, normal blood pressure at rest should be below 135mmHg systolic and at or below 85mmHg diastolic. For those with diabetes, blood pressure targets are now at or below 130mmHg systolic and at or below 80mmHg diastolic. If you have chronic kidney disease, are over 70 or have other risk factors, the new targets are even lower.

As February is Heart Health Month, keeping your blood pressure under control is just one of the ways to maintain a healthy heart along with getting enough exercise, eating a healthy well-balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, keep stress under control and not smoking. Like almost everyone, the Plumbing Industry has not gone unscathed from the pandemic. At the onset of the shutdowns, many people in the Trades were laid off. We fairly quickly devised how and where we could work safely. We worked closely with our clients to map out how we could keep everyone safe and feeling comfortable and still manage to do our jobs. When there was ever a doubt about the degree of safety protocols needed, we erred on the side of caution. We had Journeymen working in full face-mask respirators for months.

For the last number of months, business has been booming. People will always need heat and water and a toilet that flushes. However, we still have to work with many protocols in place and things in general are taking longer.

Parts take longer. Most suppliers have curbside pick-up protocols and only so many tradesmen allowed into wholesalers at one time. Our guys can sometimes sit outside for 30 minutes just waiting to get into a supplier. This effects time on a service call.

We are also starting to find more and more items out of stock. As manufacturers are having the same struggles as everyone, (shutdowns, staff shortages and shipping problems), some items that we used to take for granted as off the shelf, often have delays and lead times or we have to drive to multiple suppliers to find parts. Some manufacturers have raised prices as a result of their Covid struggles.

Many Plumbing and Heating Appliances are working much harder nowadays. With so many people working from home and staying home on the evenings and weekends, your equipment is working much harder to keep you comfortable. Furnaces and Boilers are running around the clock. More demands for water, (showers and the ever-present hand-washing), all put more demands on your plumbing. This takes a toll, especially if you are talking about multi-family residential buildings.

Things like Sani-wipes, (and occasionally masks) being flushed down drains is something that we are coming across more and more. To be clear; don’t flush these things, unless you have discretionary money you don’t mind throwing away.

In summary; some things are taking longer. Some things will be more expensive. We are all in the same boat. With patience and pulling together, we will get through this.

The local Girl Guides of Canada in needs some help as they wrap up a key and popular fundraising initiative that been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ladner and Tsawwassen District still have more than 80 cases to sell to conclude its annual chocolate mint cookie campaign. On the horizon is the traditional vanilla and chocolate

cookie drive in the spring.

Typically, Girl Guides would be selling their cookies by neighbourhood door knocking and outside of stores. The pandemic has taken away those options.

“Normally the girls are able to sell cookies outside of Save-OnFoods and other local stores as well as door-to-door, which of course we can’t right now, so we have to rely on the girls selling them just to friends and family,” explained Alisa Sayce, a leader with the 3rd Ladner Guides. “Lots

of parents, including my husband, take them to work to sell, but since himself and most other parents are working from home, they can’t do that either.”

The mint cookies sell for $5 a box and local delivery can be arranged by emailing Katrina at: katrinajantzen@gmail.com or Alisa at: alisasayce@hotmail.com.

Sayce also suggested cookies can be purchased and donated to Delta care homes where seniors have been isolated for much of the pandemic.

On Monday January 25, silver was priced at $32.75 Canadian. On Monday February 1 silver reached $38.00 before dropping back down on Tuesday. Since the beginning of 2020, when I last wrote an article about silver and gold , both of these precious metals have gone up in value. This time last year ( 2020) Gold was $1850 Canadian and silver was $22.50. As of February 2,2021 Gold is $2350 and Silver $34.00.

These are impressive gains of 27% and 50% gains in that year. The reason Silver had such a big jump from Friday to Monday was because of a push to attempt buying up all the physical silver to raise prices extremely high. Many store and websites sold out because of this demand.

‘Big Maple’ returns to Mariners Pitcher James Paxton is returning to the Seattle Mariners.

According to his longtime friend Chad Dey, the towering lefty from Ladner has signed with the Mariners for the coming season. The oneyear deal is reportedly worth $8.5 million (US).

Paxton spent six seasons in Seattle before being traded to the New York Yankees. This was the 32-year-old’s first time as an unrestricted free agent.

The Delta Secondary graduate enjoyed a productive run in Seattle and a loyal following too with the dedicated “Maple Grove” outfield section created for his home starts, reflecting his “Big Maple” nickname.

His time in Seattle was highlighted by a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays in May 2018.

He compiled a 23-11 record over the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Ms. Paxton is coming off an injury plagued shortened season with the Yankees. That came after going 15-6 in 2019.

Keegan Kozack is already well-travelled in his promising lacrosse career.

The 18-year-old from Ladner is in his freshman season at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. He is part of an outstanding 2002-born local age group that saw Rhys Porteous (Manhattan College) and Laurelle Weisbrod (Jacksonville University) also earn field lacrosse scholarships to US schools. What makes Kozack’s journey unique is he took his game down south three years earlier.

The high-scoring attack player graduated from Blue Ridge last June. The private boarding school in St. George, Virginia is noted for its field lacrosse program along with other sports. Kozack came through Sacred Heart then spent two years at Vancouver College before thriving at Blue Ridge, where he captained the senior varsity team in his grade 11 and 12 years.

“Vancouver College was a great place and I had a great time there, but Blue Ridge was a great opportunity that I didn’t feel I could pass up on as I just love lacrosse,” he said.

“Just getting to play every day and working out in the gym. There are a lot of great athletes that kind of mentored me and helped me out. It made the transition of going to college a lot easier and it was really cool to meet guys from all over the place.”

It was actually at a BC Best summer camp back at home where Kozack got the attention of Canisius head coach Mark Miyashita who happens to be from Richmond. He was invited to attend a prospects camp and made the trek to Buffalo from Blue Ridge with a classmate and committed to the program soon after.

Kozack attended Canisius in the fall semester where there was limited off-season activity due to COVID-19 restrictions. He returned home for the holidays and then returned to where the plan is the team will at least play its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule.

“Hopefully we will have a close to a normal season as possible,” he reflected. “I’m just trying to be a player and not worrying when I am playing next. We did quite a bit in the fall workouts. I love the freshman group

and the upper class was great to us. It was a really cool experience.”

Like almost every Canadian kid, Kozack grew up playing the box version of the sport and still does as a member of the Delta Islanders organization. He helped Delta win the inaugural Junior B tier one title in 2019, compiling 45 points in 11 regular season games. He is poised to step up to junior “A” this summer should the pandemic not get in the way of a 2021 season.

Kozack also showcased his athleticism on the football field, playing two years at Blue Ridge where, as a receiver, the 6-foot and 200-pounder earned all-conference honourable mention recognition. He earlier

thrived in ice hockey too which is hardly a surprise given his dad enjoyed a career in the Western Hockey League. Still, lacrosse has always been his first love.

“I played A1 (rep) with South Delta but it was lacrosse all the way for me,” he added. “I played it my whole life and I just loved going out to the box and watching games at the Ladner Leisure Centre growing up. I thought it was a no brainer at the time but I did love hockey and going to Blue Ridge gave me the opportunity to try football too.”

Kozack is one of four BC born players on the Canisius roster. He is joined by Kyle Brunsch (Langley), Kyle Nichols (Coquitlam) and Jacob Pahnke (Maple Ridge).

REPPENHAGEN, Darlene J. February 16, 1942 − January 16, 2021 Born February 16, 1942, passed away peacefully after a short time in palliative care in Delta. She is pre−deceased by her husband, Walter. Darlene was a long−time resident in Tsawwassen. She will always be remembered for her kindness to others.

She trained as a social worker and worked at George Derby Centre for many years. Thank you to all of those who supported Darlene during her last years, especially her beloved dog "Frankie", and her loving friends, Inger and Bastry.

Born in Montreal, Quebec in 1947, an only child to James Morrissey and Wilma Gimlett. She was raised by her loving grandparents, Lilian and James Morrissey. In her teens she met the love of her life, Bill Steen. At the spin of a bottle in 1978, Jo Ann and her husband Bill, packed up their family of four and drove out west. They landed in Tsawwassen and made a life for themselves and their beloved children, Alison and Jamie. They quickly made a strong, “family like” support system, as they had left theirs behind.

Jo Ann worked in the Real Estate industry in Tsawwassen and Ladner for more than 30 years. She was a force… don’t mess with the best! In the latter part of her career, Jo Ann loved being a mentor. Her unrelenting work ethic, brutal honesty and ability to “call a spade a spade” are just a few of the qualities that we admire and will remember with fondness.

Those who knew her well would attest to her commitment to her family. Jo Ann leaves behind her loving children, Alison and Jamie (Maya Ambro) and her beloved grandchildren Grace, Ben and William Emri and Rocco Steen. She loved her children and grandchildren to the moon and back. Sean Walmsley, (son of Edward Walmsley) and son, Ethan, gave her such happiness and unconditional love. There wasn’t a bridge Jojo wouldn’t cross for us, at lightning speed. Her laughter and sense of humour will always be remembered. In her last days, family gathered to show their love and support for her final wishes.

Her life and death were lived on her terms; she did it “Her Way”. She will be forever missed.

Many thanks to her physicians at BC Cancer, the team at The Irene Thomas Hospice and our family doctor, Colleen Lee for doing their very best during this global pandemic to care for our Mom. Thank-you also to Jo Ann’s collective “Tsatsu” family who provided her with love, strength and laughter.

We will celebrate her life when we all can gather again and raise a glass (or two) in her honour. She was not your “Average Jo”.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Delta Food Bank, or just do something nice for someone else. It’s all about love and kindness.

PENFOLD, Patricia S. February 11, 1936 − February 7, 2021 We are very sorry to announce that Patricia Susan Penfold passed away on February 7, after a valiant battle to overcome the effects of a major stroke.

Her passing leaves a major void in many lives, including us children, Robert, Mary, and Paul Stephenson.

Sue was born on February 11, 1936, in Wells−next−the−Sea, England as the first child to parents, John and Bertha Penfold (nee Holmes).

She went on to attend, as a "scholarship girl," the Bedford High School for Girls and then was one of the very few women at the time to attend St. Mary’s Medical School in London. She and her first husband, J. Michael Stephenson, emigrated to Canada in 1960, landing first in Ontario, and eventually settling in Vancouver. Later she lived with and married Keith Payn, and in 1989 they moved to their dream home in Tsawwassen.

Sue became a respected psychiatrist with BC Children’s Hospital and a full professor at UBC Faculty of Medicine, writing two professional books and numerous journal articles. As a passionate child psychiatrist, feminist, and advocate for victims of abuse by doctors and therapists, Sue touched many lives. After her retirement at age 78, she continued to volunteer for the Therapy Abuse Link Line, helping countless others.

Outside of her career, Sue was an absolute outdoor enthusiast. She bagged an inordinate number of peaks in the Rockies, Coast Mountains, and Vancouver Island. On the water, the inveterate sailor enjoyed multi−day kayak adventures in Clayoquot Sound and Haida Gwaii, among others.

Sue also had many happy hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing days with the Pathfinders Outdoor Club.

Post−retirement, she wrote often and was a member of the local writer’s club.

Sue will be sorely missed. A small gathering of family was held at Delta Funeral Home. We will have the Wake she requested when it is safe. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Covenant House or Western Canada Wilderness Committee − two of the organizations she supported.

ZDENEK, Jeffrey Jon August 1, 1955 − January 28, 2021 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jeffrey Jon Zdenek on January 28, 2021, in Long Beach, California, of natural causes.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois on August 1, 1955, Jeff was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Betty; and eldest brother, Bob. He is survived by his children, Brandon and Lindsey; their mother, Sarah; older brothers, Dave and Jim; younger sister, Jeanie; sisters−in−law, Linda and Julie; and many nieces, nephews, great−nieces, and great−nephews. Jeff grew up in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and over the years resided in Toronto, Tsawwassen, Ladner, and Long Beach, California. NEWTON, Shirley January 31, 1926 − January 7, 2021 It is with a heavy heart that the family of Shirley Newton announces her passing on January 7, at the Waterford Care Centre in Tsawwassen. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, John; her daughter, Ann (Steve); and her granddaughters, Lauren and Sarah. She will be greatly missed by her extended family who welcomed her at all the family get−togethers. Shirley was born in Burnaby and grew up in Coquitlam and Surrey, later moving to Vancouver. She met her husband Al Newton at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church in the West End, where they were both in the badminton league. After the children were born they moved to West Richmond to raise their family.

During this time Shirley became active with the Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered weekly at the Thrift Shop in Steveston, where she had many friends. Later she went to work for two local Richmond doctors as a medical office assistant. When her daughter moved to Tsawwassen to start a family, Shirley moved out that way soon after, to take full advantage of being a loving grandmother. She especially liked having tea with her granddaughters and attending their many dance and swimming competitions. Even living in Delta, she was still able to keep up with her volunteering positions at the Thrift Shop and the Gateway Theatre in Richmond. After many years of living in Tsawwassen, Shirley was thrilled to be one of the first residents of the Wexford Seniors Residence where she lived for four enjoyable years.

A family gathering with the best tea and china cups will be held in her honour when it is safe to do so.

After renting homes in West Vancouver and Richmond, they eventually settled in Ladner, where they would raise their family.
